No personalized assessment at all. He [Dr. Edward Marut] just uses the same protocol on everyone, in the same order, and admitted to doing so. Never saw him outside of consultations. I do not feel like he set realistic expectations...Do not use this doctor if you require any sort of personalized treatment...you are treated like a number and not adequately prepared for possible outcomes...hearing the news that you have no viable embryos is absolutely devastating
You get treated like you are on a conveyor belt and contradictory expectations are set along the way [at FCI] You have to remind everyone of who you are at all times and absolutely no consideration is given to your personal case. A overly cheerful greeting of "hello how are you today?!" after you are receiving contradictory and potentially terrible news about your fertility is an easy way to make you feel like a number instead of a patient. I received the wrong medication protocol from Ashley and had to remind her that it was supposed to be adjusted.

Do not use this doctor if you require any sort of personalized treatment.

Again, you are treated like a number and not adequately prepared for possible outcomes. Everything you do prepares you to have leftover embryos and the staff (from ultrasounds technicians to nurses on the day of retrieval) talk to you as if a batch of healthy embryos is a foregone conclusion. So, even though you know there are no guarantees in this process hearing the news that you have no viable embryos is absolutely devastating. Especially when the staff doesn't adjust their language or treatment towards you as you try to move forward and realize your need for personalized treatment.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
This organization is not very good at communicating with patients or internally. They have a patient portal with email functionality that no one responds to and your online results are not always updated. Nurses to not take your entire case into consideration if you email them so you have to explain your case in full every single time you contact the nurse. You have to reach out to billing multiple times before someone responds to you. I had issues with the office losing records they get from my regular doctor and when I changed my last name during treatment everything got screwed up and it took a few weeks to sort everything out.
We did not want to actually proceed with IUIs and wanted to jump to IVF but he [Dr. Marut] was adamant that it would work. I took follistim, had regular monitoring and ovidril as a trigger. All results were negative... If he tried to textbook explain something and we had a question it was like he got angry that he had to answer. Additionally, I felt like I was forced to do 6 IUIs and then was just placed into a generic program for our IVF treatment. Whenever I called to ask about labs and ask for an explanation as to why one level could have been higher or lower it took a significant amount of time to even answer or research.
Appointments that are as simply as blood work and ultrasound take over an hour [at Fertility Center of Illinois-Chicago] because they’re always running behind. It typically takes 30 minutes in the waiting room to be seen. That being said, the ultrasound technicians and lab were all wonderful and very nice. I have nothing negative to say about them or my experience with the staff in that regard!
How was your experience with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
He is very clinical and seems like a nice man when you first meet him. I don’t think he actually reviews the patient as a person rather just looks at labs (without taking into consideration existing conditions) and plops patients into programs in hopes that the statistics hold up. As mentioned I feel like I was treated in an inhuman manner, it’s hard to even put into words.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Be aggressive with your questions and don’t let him manipulate or bully you into IUI or a specific protocol.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Throughout I had issues with Dr. Marut’s nurse, Ashley. When I would ask questions she would simply make me feel stupid. This was similar with Dr. Marut as well. They didn’t know me and I know they didnt really care. I felt like I was a mouse being tested on, poked and prodded regularly without true monitoring or care. It truly felt inhuman but I was blinded by the potential to have a baby.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut (retired) used in your cycles at Fertility Centers of Illinois and their degree of success.
IUI 1-3: medications used were letrozole, regular monitoring and ovidril for trigger. This was chosen as it was “typical” to start out. All results were negative.
IUI 4-6: given the first three cycles didn’t work he noted it was typical to do three cycles with injectables. We did not want to actually proceed with IUIs and wanted to jump to IVF but he was adamant that it would work. I took follistim, had regular monitoring and ovidril as a trigger. All results were negative.
Retrieval and fresh transfer: medications used were follistim, menopur, ganirelix, minivelle, crinone. He noted this was a standard protocol. During my last monitoring appointment my uterine lining was significantly thinner but no mention was made. Pregnancy test result was negative.
FET 1: I took birth control for 3 weeks, lupron, minivelle and crinone for this cycle. This was a standard protocol that he felt was suitable for me. Again, my lining was thinner before the actual transfer than it has been at previous appointments but no mention was made. This transfer ended as a chemical pregnancy.
FET 2: I took birth control for 3 weeks, lupron, minivelle and crinone and he added in a baby aspirin for this cycle. This was a standard protocol plus aspirin that he felt was suitable for me. Again, my lining was thinner before the actual transfer than it has been at previous appointments but no mention was made and when I asked it was brushed off and not acknowledged. Pregnancy test result was negative.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Ashley and Torria)
Torria was much better than Ashley. Ashley has sent me incorrect schedules which i had to correct for her with wrong dates and medications, she made me feel stupid, I was constantly asking questions about my care which she never knew the answers to and had to review and research my file, she was cold and not compassionate.

It is truly a baby making mill. Appointments that are as simply as blood work and ultrasound take over an hour because they’re always running behind. It typically takes 30 minutes in the waiting room to be seen.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
The monitoring appointments went well, aside from the long wait times. The staff was very nice and the technicians were all lovely.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Each appointment required a $50 copay and each round of IUI was approximately $1500. The retrieval cycle with fresh embryo transfer was about $10,000 and the frozen transfers after that we’re about $5000 each.
Describe Edward Marut (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
He was adamant about only transferring one embryo at a time (even though we didn’t do genetic testing) and was rude when we asked to do more than one.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
There have been a handful of times where after I checked in, I waited an hour before them noticing that they never printed and relayed my paperwork so I could be seen. My online portal only shows a handful of blood test results when I have had dozens of monitoring appointments as well.
When meeting with Dr. Marut he is very compassionate and does make you feel like a human. ... I didn't see him again until it was time for the actual transfer. I think this may have been the hardest part, because I didn't have that reassurance that I needed during that process. ... I do like that he makes the effort to be at every ultrasound appointment. It's reassuring to hear him say how everything is measuring well and what to expect next.
The overall feel at FCI though is not the most "homey". ... Strengths: lot's availability for appointments. I especially like the early appointments (they open at 6:45am - so it's very convenient). Phone is always answered. Weaknesses: Very large office. Hardly ever seen by the same person. ... There were a few instances when I felt that there was some disorganization and that made me a little flustered with the process; but overall, she [nurse] does a good job and is attentive to your needs.
How was your experience with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Overall my experience with Dr. Marut was very good. I met with him for an FET and he took the time to explain the entire protocol with me. At one of our diagnostic exams, I mentioned to him that I'd like to try a "Natural FET" and he allowed for me to go that route. I'd also like to mention that during the saline ultrasound I had to bring my 1year old daughter with me and he was very accommodating. She cried the entire time and he told me not to worry and did what he needed to do as quickly as possible. I was truly touched by how caring and understanding he was in this situation. I didn't see him again until it was time for the actual transfer. I think this may have been the hardest part, because I didn't have that reassurance that I needed during that process. My FET was successful and he seemed genuinely happy for us. I do like that he makes the effort to be at every ultrasound appointment. It's reassuring to hear him say how everything is measuring well and what to expect next.

Describe the protocols Edward Marut (retired) used in your cycles at Fertility Centers of Illinois and their degree of success.
I asked for a Natural FET. So the protocol was basically monitoring of lining and follicles. Once it looked like I was ready to ovulate I took a trigger shot and started Crinone 3 days later. Transfer was 7 days after trigger shot.

$3,500 for FET
$250 Transfer of embryos Fee
Paid separately to transfer my embryos to the clinic as well as paid separately for medications.
Describe Edward Marut (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Dr. Marut suggested early on to only transfer one embryo.
Dr Marut transferred one of the euploid embryos in a fresh cycle ... I had very little chance of getting pregnant given how overstimulated my ovaries were. ... however did not adjust my protocol after 7 failed cycles over two years. ... I did not feel Dr Marut paid attention to my case as a patient. ... I asked Dr. Marut about this and he acknowledged that I would have had a better chance of getting pregnant in a frozen cycle. I was 43 at the time and I don't know Dr. Marut thought my chances shouldn't be optimized.
It [Fertility Centers of Illinois] is a large facility meaning they can accommodate you 7 days a weeks for various procedures. I had numerous procedures performed over the weekend. The con is that because it is large facility it is hard to get the personal attention. ... Monitoring is efficient however given the size of the practice could take a while. I was usually there at 630 am ... All the nursing staff at FCI was excellent. My primary nurse Torria was really a compassionate and caring nurse. She went out of her way to assist me.
How was your experience with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
I did not feel Dr Marut paid attention to my case as a patient. Given my high ovarian reserve, from the first visit he was highly optimistic about my chances of getting pregnant however did not adjust my protocol after 7 failed cycles over two years. I was able to successfully get pregnant at age 44 quickly after I left Dr. Marut's care.

Check the SART data and find a successful doctor for your personal circumstances.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Dr Marut was the first fertility specialist I saw based on my primary care physician's recommendation. I spent 2 years at FCI under his care and did not get pregnant. I did 5 iuis (one cancelled) and 2 IVFs. I had 2 euploid (normal) embryos after PGS testing with a 65% chance of implantation. Dr Marut transferred one of the euploid embryos in a fresh cycle where I had retrieved 30+ eggs. I saw 3 other fertility specialists after Dr Marut and every single one of them indicated that this was a huge mistake. I had very little chance of getting pregnant given how overstimulated my ovaries were. I asked Dr. Marut about this and he acknowledged that I would have had a better chance of getting pregnant in a frozen cycle. I was 43 at the time and I don't know Dr. Marut thought my chances shouldn't be optimized. To this day, I'm so upset about losing this embryo.

Dr Marut doesn’t exactly explain things clearly at times.... He’s very quick with his appointments, doesn’t explain things very well. I usually leave more confused than when I went in. Bedside manner is very up and down. Muttered a bunch of stuff during an ultrasound and never told me what he said.... Dr Marut would have preferred to go straight to IUI, but we wanted to start slowly.... Dr Marut is having me take Letrozole, ovidrel and endometrin for the cycle. Trying to stimulate egg growth and ovulation
Staff [FCI - High Pk] is super friendly and try to help you the best they can. You may not see the doctor or nurse much, but become great friends with lab tech and ultrasound tech.... They have a hard time understanding our insurance at times and scheduling can be a bit of a mess. They’re really great in person, but need some work on the phone and email front.... Made an appointment for blood work via the patient portal and when I showed up I wasn’t in the computer for the day.

Barely see the doctor at all. He randomly threw out that I have PCOS rather than straight up telling me. Dr Marut doesn’t exactly explain things clearly at times. I understand he has a lot of patients, but I would like to understand what is going on with my body. Hearing back from nurses isn’t always guaranteed either.

Currently we’re trying timed intercourse with fertility medication. It’s what our insurance pays for, so it’s where we’re starting. Dr Marut would have preferred to go straight to IUI, but we wanted to start slowly. I have a history of ectopic pregnancy, so IVF would be ideal. Dr Marut is having me take Letrozole, ovidrel and endometrin for the cycle. Trying to stimulate egg growth and ovulation

Dr. Marut came to every ultrasound! And he genuinely cared about how I was feeling...Dr. Marut is an extremely compassionate physician who takes the time to get to know you and your unique situation. He then recommends a course of care that fits your needs and diagnosis. I appreciate that he starts out conservatively and doesn't push IVF right away...And when we had our miscarriage, he was genuinely sad for our loss, expressed his remorse, and handled the follow up care with compassion and understanding. It really helped my husband and I with our grief, and we now feel like we can move forward with hope. He is a wonderful doctor with the bedside manner you hope for in a physician.
Everyone we interacted with at FCI shows such genuine care and concern. I highly recommend this facility...There are several different waiting rooms at FCI, and each of them is usually packed with women and their partners, waiting the same labs as you. Just be prepared to wait...Our nurse was so compassionate. Always available to answer questions, find meds when the pharmacy fell through, etc. They care!!...Lindsay is the nurse we interacted with the most. My husband and I cannot say enough wonderful things about her! She is so attentive, responsive and genuinely caring. She makes us feel like her only patients.

Describe the protocols Edward Marut (retired) used in your cycles at Fertility Centers of Illinois and their degree of success.
At our initial consult, Dr. Marut reviewed my labs from my regular OB/GYN and my husband's semen analysis. He was confident, based on our labs, that he could get us pregnant and said as much. We had several more blood panels run that day, and I was told to call when my next cycle began. He recommended we try three IUI cycles using Letrozole and Ovidrel to bring on ovulation. And I used Corinne gel suppositories from the day after IUI until I either got my period, or had a positive pregnancy test. The first IUI didn't work. So we started up again the next cycle. Followed the same protocol, and this time, I got pregnant! We learned via blood draw at FCI. I returned every 2-3 days to monitor the beta levels, and continued to use Crinone daily. We came in every week for ultrasounds (3 total) before Dr. Marut graduated us from FCI, and sent my files to my OB/GYN. Unfortunately, I ended up having a missed miscarriage. The ultrasounds all looked normal, so this came as a quite a shock to everyone, Dr. Marut included.
It's been 6 weeks since the miscarriage, and we just started back with Dr. Marut and his team. First order of business, I am going in for a saline ultrasound. We are to use protection this cycle, and next cycle, Dr. Marut wants to monitor my body's natural process and see if I am producing follicles on my own. That will mean bloodwork and ultrasounds. If needed, he will prescribe something to bring on my cycle, and I may return to the Letrozole/Ovidrel treatment plan. We shall see!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Lindsay Flannigan)
Lindsay is the nurse we interacted with the most. My husband and I cannot say enough wonderful things about her! She is so attentive, responsive and genuinely caring. She makes us feel like her only patients. When she called to tell me we were pregnant, her joy was radiating through the phone. On the flip side, when we suffered the missed miscarriage, she cried with us, hugged and consoled us, and even got us in for a second opinion ultrasound at FCI before we decided how to proceed. She followed up with me regularly between the miscarriage and now, just to ask how I am feeling. And when I shared my frustration over how my OB/GYN handled delivering the news of the miscarriage to me, she helped me find a new doctor. And it's not just Lindsay. Everyone we interacted with at FCI shows such genuine care and concern. I highly recommend this facility.
Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
I was amazed at how many people are struggling with infertility! There are several different waiting rooms at FCI, and each of them is usually packed with women and their partners, waiting the same labs as you. Just be prepared to wait, even if your appointment start time is 8:00 a.m., you may be there a while. Bring a book. Relax. It's not a big deal. You will get seen, and when they see you, they will make you feel like you are their only patient. I promise.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
I have insurance, but it doesn't cover infertility. Every IUI was paid for out of pocket, but the clinic offers some sort of discount for patients who pay out of pocket (I'm not sure how much. I never asked. I just know that we didn't have to pay the full amount listed). I believe IUI itself was around $200. The sperm washing was more expensive - around $750.
Describe Edward Marut (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
We rarely spoke with Dr. Marut, only if we scheduled a separate consultation with him, and even those were only available twice/week, so it was difficult to get in touch with him...While we understand that unexplained infertility is somewhat common, we'd still like to know what could be causing the issues, what we haven't tested for yet, etc... I would see a story on the news about a new fertility treatment, or read about a new study online, and write it down to ask him about. He (metaphorically) rolled his eyes at me, laughing and acting like I was a crazy infertile lady. Really, I was just trying to ask questions and learn more, and to understand what else was out there for us that could help us figure out why this wasn't happening for us. He made me feel like I couldn't ask questions, or that if I did, my questions were silly.
[FCI - Chicago] nurses (specifically Lindsay, Jennifer, and Myung) were amazing. They were compassionate, understanding, patient, etc. They answered all of my calls and emails in a timely fashion, and when I had an emergency situation, they remained calm and handled the situation well...We paid for consultations... (usually around $125) and medications ($180 per cycle). Otherwise, everything was covered by insurance...While we understand that unexplained infertility is somewhat common, we'd still like to know what could be causing the issues, what we haven't tested for yet, etc.
How was your experience with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
During every consultation we had, Dr. Marut made us feel like it was our turn to have a baby next - that we were RIGHT there. Some people maybe want to feel that way, but for us, we needed him to set realistic expectations. So 7 IUIs later, we still aren't pregnant (unexplained infertility), and we're frustrated and looking for second opinions. While we understand that unexplained infertility is somewhat common, we'd still like to know what could be causing the issues, what we haven't tested for yet, etc.

Very personable and lovely to meet however, he [Dr. Marut] can be very clinical with bad news. I wish there was more opportunities to get to interact with him more but I only had a face to face after two rounds of disappointing egg retrieval... I've only actually seen the doctor a handful of times and both egg retrieval have been done by a different doctor on staff that day...I had two egg retrieval (needed to do frozen for day 5 PGD and PGS testing due to genetic condition). First round got a disappointing four eggs of which only one made to blast. Going in I had an AFC of 9 so looking back I wish he would have suggested we wait a month for better odds.
[FCI - Chi] Strengths - great statistics, nurses call back very early on in the day with instructions, convent locations, Weaknesses - due to all those great statistics, they are slammed with patients and you really need to advocate for yourself...Morning appointments could take up to an hour...My major issue became communication between my testing lab, embryologist and the finance office (person in charge of getting insurance approvals). ..

Be your own advocate. There are so many patients that things can slip through the cracks. For instance, they forgot to call me for my results on my day 5 embryos. I waiting all day hemming and hawing if I should call to find out but decided to try and be patient and not bother them. Nobody called. By the time I finally caved and called they had closed. Night nurse had no idea what my results were so I had to spend a very nervous night wondering if any made it to day 5.

Went to both their Highland park location and River North. Their Chicago location had several waiting rooms and you would sit in multiple for each bloodwork and ultrasounds appointment. Morning appointments could take up to an hour. Their Highland park office you were in and out within 20 minutes. On the flip side, the ultrasound techs in Chicago walk you through their process and many times will give you your follicle count at the time you see them (which is SUPER helpful for us worry-warts). I've only actually seen the doctor a handful of times and both egg retrieval have been done by a different doctor on staff that day. Special attention from the doctor does not exist here.

Going in I had an AFC of 9 so looking back I wish he would have suggested we wait a month for better odds. Two months previous I had an AFC of 20 to begin with. Second ER he doubled the follistim and Menopur and we got 15 eggs (4 made it to day 5). All turned out to have PGS/PGD issues. Third round had 20 AFC so we started but eventually follicle count dropped so we cancelled. Will be trying new procedure next time.

My regular nurse was fantastic. There was a fill in nurse as well who was even better. They always called and time and I had no issues with them. My major issue became communication between my testing lab, embryologist and the finance office (person in charge of getting insurance approvals). My first cycle almost got cancelled in the middle of stims because they forgot to get prior approval. My lab almost didn't do PGS testing because someone sent them a note saying we only wanted PGD (especially frustrating because we had so many PGS issues the first batch it was evident that would want that done again). Also, as I explained before, the embryologist forgot to call on the crucial day 5 to tell us if any embryos made it.
Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Strengths - great statistics, nurses call back very early on in the day with instructions, convent locations,
Weaknesses - due to all those great statistics, they are slammed with patients and you really need to advocate for yourself.
What specific things went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Dr. Marut is incredibly thorough, and responsive. After 3 years of being a patient of FCI, I've never felt in such great care as I do with Dr. Marut. He's compassionate, incredibly intelligent and takes great care to review his cases. While he has a human element, he doesn't sugar coat things either. He's direct, and honest...I really couldn't be in better hands...Dr. Marut has been so attentive to detail during our time with him. We unfortunately suffered a late miscarriage and not only was he compassionate, he was incredibly responsive
After working with several nurses over the years at FCI, Jen is my favorite nurse! She's compassionate, responsive and goes above and beyond to be helpful...While I like FCI, I will say that you can feel like a number sometimes. The monitoring for egg retrievals has always been my least favorite part. I'm not crazy about some of the technicians while others can be lovely. I've found at times things get lost in the shuffle...We've had trouble with getting mis information about our embryos in the lab (we were told twice that we didn't have any normal ones when we did)

Dr. Marut has been so attentive to detail during our time with him. We unfortunately suffered a late miscarriage and not only was he compassionate, he was incredibly responsive and was a big reason we had the strength to try again. I can't say enough good things about him.

I've done 2 egg retrievals with Dr. Marut. In my first one, he followed the protocol I had followed with Dr. Kaplan (based on the fact that that protocol worked well for me. ) I was on gonal f, menopur and gainerelex. When I didn't respond well, he changed it up for my next retrieval (I was on Lupron and menopur). I was happy to see a change in the protocol which did produce good embryos for us.

We've had trouble with getting mis information about our embryos in the lab (we were told twice that we didn't have any normal ones when we did)
...as time went on I didn't feel like he [Dr. Marut] was consistent in his approach and I felt like he didn't present us with all of the facts. Months after the fact I read stuff on my chart (as I was transitioning to a new doctor) that was never mentioned to me. Additionally, there was one cycle where he proceed with an IUI while I still had my period. As we got a second and third opinion, who both questioned his approach that month it made us think he wasn't giving us individualized treatment and instead just going through the motions...
Originally, the strength [at FCI - Chi] was the ability to get in easily so FCI is enormous and they have a big staff. However, my our last appointment (when we were waiting to find out if i miscarried) we had to wait two hours because it was so overcrowded after being closed for the Memorial Day Weekend because they have so many patients. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
We were only able to meet with him a few times during our treatment. Be ready with your questions because he is not forthcoming with information so I felt like our meetings were rushed and I didn't leave feeling confident. Given what I know now, I would come in with a list of questions to make sure everything was addressed during the quick time with him.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
I felt like the steps we were taking to get pregnant despite unexplained infertility were not specific to my cycles and rather a generic approach.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut (retired) used in your cycles at Fertility Centers of Illinois and their degree of success.
After getting the Fertility Awareness Test at FCI ($99), we learned my husband's sperm was normal by all 3 counts and I had plenty of eggs (with a strong AMH score). We had previously miscarried (natural conception) so first we did the HSG (normal results). Given our unexplained infertility (we'd been trying for over a year at this point), the plan was Letrazole plus IUI.
The first cycle, he determined that my Estrogen levels were too high so we skipped the Letrazole and did a natural IUI. We did not get pregnant.
The second cycle, during my baseline test results he determined that ovulation while imminent while still on my period so again we skipped the Letrazole and did a natural IUI. We did not get pregnant.
The third cycle, we were able to do the Letrazole plus and IUI and got pregnant. I miscarried for the second time at 8 weeks.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Holly Buckel)
I was unhappy with the nurses and was a big part of the reason I wanted to leave FCI and go to a smaller clinic. There were times they would call and read me instructions and have them incorrect.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
As I mentioned when evaluating the nurses, I felt like they provided conflicting information. One cycle I was told to skip Letrazole because my levels were to high and move forward with a natural IUI. The next month she referenced me taking the Letrazole which I had not per her instructions.
I completed two rounds of IUI that resulted in negative pregnancy tests. Dr. Marut did not perform the IUI nor did I see him during the course of those treatments. We had another follow up visit with Dr. Marut, at which point we decided to do IVF. I did not see him again during the course of embryo retrieval, transfer or any portion of the IVF cycle. Fortunately, our 1st round of IVF resulted in pregnancy.
FCI will likely deliver on what you've asked of them - getting you pregnant. However, know that this clinic is a factory. While you will receive good treatment, you will also feel like a number. You will not have access to your doctor outside of the office consultation visits with them. The nursing staff performs all IUI's and the "doctor on call" (who is not one of the physicians listed in the group practice and therefore someone you've never met), will perform your IVF embryo retrieval and transfer. Prior to my embryo transfer, patient instructions were not clear and it was extremely difficult to reach anyone in the clinic. I remember calling 5-10 times and getting transferred to empty voicemail boxes or staff hanging up on me. On the whole, I found that they treat their patients as if they have been through the process (IUI or IVF) before, which leaves you uninformed. To me, it seemed as though they needed to expand their staff to be able to adequately handle the high number of patients. All of this being said, my first consultation was in June 2015, we tried IUI in July and August (unsuccessful), and I was pregnant via IVF by October 2015. Dr. Marut did attend my first ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and was very compassionate when answering my call with an emergency the evening before.
How was your experience with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Dr. Marut seemed kind and knowledgable, but our time with him was very short. We saw him for 5-10 minutes at our initial consultation and 5-10 minutes in a follow up visit to discuss a treatment plan. I completed two rounds of IUI that resulted in negative pregnancy tests. Dr. Marut did not perform the IUI nor did I see him during the course of those treatments. We had another follow up visit with Dr. Marut, at which point we decided to do IVF. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Know that you will be treated by nurses and staff, and not have regular access to or contact with Dr. Marut. His nurse Donna can be difficult to communicate with as she does not seem to accept questions about your treatment very well.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Typically at FCI, you are called from the waiting room in groups. Each patient gathers by the nurse and the rest of the group is called. You move to the ultrasound waiting room as a herd, which as a patient made me feel like a number rather than someone there for individualized care.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut (retired) used in your cycles at Fertility Centers of Illinois and their degree of success.
We completed two rounds of IUI (Letrozole + ovulation trigger), followed by 1 month on the pill then IVF the following month. I was pleased that after two unsuccessful rounds of IUI, Dr. Marut did listen to our request to move on to IVF, and agreed that that would be the recommended treatment plan. At this point we had been trying to conceive for nearly two years and were interested in expediting the process.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Donna)
Donna was friendly and somewhat compassionate, but I found she was difficult to communicate with. She did not seem open to questions about your treatment and got defensive when I started asking questions about my bloodwork and ultrasound test results prior to IUI. I wanted to be as informed as possible, and asking questions about my LH levels and timing of IUI ruffled her feathers.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Unfortunately, despite my Illinois residency, I was not eligible for the IL state mandated fertility coverage because my employer-based insurance was out of state (BCBS of Minnesota). Therefore, the financial aspect of my care was extremely stressful. Luckily, my insurance did cover fertility treatment, but only up to $15,000 during my lifetime across any insurance plans with my employer. Following my first consultation, the billing specialist printed out the explanation of coverage and stated "this is very bad." Not exactly reassuring words as we embarked on this journey. What this broke down to was all of my labs, ultrasounds, IUI meds and IUI procedures were covered by insurance. When the time came for IVF, I had $12,500 remaining in my insurance coverage. The financial consultant at FCI and my specialty pharmacy instructed that my meds would bill approximately $8,700 to insurance and the IVF procedures could bill anywhere around $5,000. Therefore, my $12,500 would not cover the whole IVF round. They did help me get creative and instructed to purchase my injectable meds out of pocket through a self-pay pharmacy, Freedom Fertility Pharmacy. They provide discounts to those paying out of pocket for medication. I ended up spending $2,050 out of pocket on 4 of the medications, and billed $1500 worth of meds to insurance. I chose this route to purchase the least expensive meds via out of pocket means, and the ones that were the priciest out of pocket but not to outrageous when billed to insurance. The total amount billed to insurance for the IVF procedures was about $4,000. I also paid $1,200 for embryo cryopreservation (not covered by my insurance) and will continue to pay out of pocket annually for embryo storage. While I did benefit from most of the cost being covered by insurance and a successful pregnancy, I was a little frustrated by a couple things. 1) I ended up with remaining insurance coverage, so while I could have billed more of the meds cost to insurance, I suppose it's good to have remaining coverage for next time (we have 4 good embryos frozen for this purpose) 2) I ended up with way more medication than needed. FCI instructed to order a 20-day supply of injectables, while I only ended up taking them for 9 days. Plenty of unused leftover meds, which I will likely donate to a friend or clinic, if the expiration date doesn't allow me to save for future rounds if needed.

The schedulers don't seem as informed and gave us incorrect instructions for our first IUI semen sample. The result was we didn't have proper signed paperwork and it delayed the specimen processing and IUI procedure. We also weren't given clear instructions for the embryo transfer process. Prior to every other procedure, I received an email the day before with instructions. Before the embryo transfer I received nothing, and called to ask if I would be able to drive after the procedure. One nurse told me yes, one told me no. I found out the day of the procedure when I arrived that I would not be on narcotics, so I could drive myself home (allowing my husband to drive back to work in his car vs. having to also get my car home somehow). These small miscommunications can be frustrating for a first-time, nervous patient who does not know what to expect.
He [Dr. Edward Marut] was very candid and answered all my questions when we met. I wanted detailed reasons of why and he patiently explained them in terms I could understand. I like things laid out and not sugar coated. He was able to provide this with me and I always left our meetings with positive thoughts....Dr Marut was straightforward and always answered all of my questions in it meetings. It's a big clinic [Fertility Centers of Illinois]. For some, that may not be the right fit. For me, I knew many others who had success with them. And I figured because they see so many patients, they might have more "out of the box" ideas that they've tried with others which worked. They have many doctors, and are open in some form every day of the year - because your IVF cycle won't pause based on the holidays or a doctor's schedule. They could always accommodate me, any day I needed.

I went through 4 IVF cycles. I believe there first was the antagonist. It resulted in a chemical pregnancy. I don't remember the second. There other 2 were Lupron Microflare and Lupron Stop (which finally worked). I always needed more than average days off stims, and the higher dose. I also took baby aspirin for my final and successful cycle. I never had a huge amount of follicles and only ever received 6/time... With only 3/time mature.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
My primary nurse was nice. She sometimes seemed a little overwhelmed or unorganized. I countered this with always being informed and organized myself.
The rest of the staff was always very kind and caring. They see lots of people daily but always made me feel important. Most recognized me and some knew me by name.

Only once was a protocol initially told to me that was not what I had previously discussed with my Dr. I informed them and they immediately said, our mistake, you are correct. And it was corrected right away. It seems to have been a simple miscommunication.
After my initial consultation and testing, I did not see or speak with Dr. Marut until my cycle had failed. I called and asked to speak with him and was told I needed to speak with a nurse who would relay my questions and call me back. I did not feel my treatment was individualized for me...NEVER did he mention there was a possibility of failure. Nor was it discussed that he would not be present or available to answer questions...
FCI is a huge fertility machine. It must be successful to grow to its current size. Be your own advocate. Ask and demand answers. The doctors are overworked and fallible - don't blindly trust them...Not all my scripts were called in. I spent hours trying to straighten it out and with my trigger booster, lost valuable time the drug could have been working in my system. I was yelled at, ignored, my calls went unreturned. I was made promises and guarantees when I didn't know how ridiculous it is for a fertility Dr to make guarantees. I trusted my Dr and that was a mistake. My next fertility Dr. said I was overmedicated and my results might have been different if my Dr. had treated me as an individual...
How was your experience with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
I was told Dr. Marut specialized in women over 40. I had done one previous cycle in CA and it was recommended I do one additional cycle. Dr. Marut criticized my Dr., her protocol, the results I achieved - and guaranteed me better results with him. NEVER did he mention there was a possibility of failure. Nor was it discussed that he would not be present or available to answer questions. After my trigger, Dr Marut said I needed a "booster", except one wasn't prescribed. By the time I was able to get the prescription, the clinic said I had lost valuable hours that the medication could have been working. Plus I needed help with the injection, which the clinic said it could only help with if I came during its business hours. Had I had the prescription, I could have - but I didn't have the medication. The following day, the day of my retrieval, I was shocked to meet another Dr. It had never been mentioned to me that Dr. Marut would not be doing my retrieval. The Dr. who did the retrieval barely acknowledged me - I was check on the list of surgeries. When my embryos began to decline, I begged to speak with Dr. Marut and I was told no. I wanted to implant, but I couldn't even reach Dr. Marut to discuss. My embryos all died and I was left devastated. When I met with Dr. Marut again for my post-consult, he basically shrugged and said "try again". I was out of pocket... another cycle wasn't possible at that time. It was an awful experience made more horrible by Dr. Marut and FCI - neither took accountability for the promises and guarantees made.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Stay on top of him. Don't take no for an answer if you want to speak with him. Ask who will perform your surgery and if you don't like the answer, speak up.

He's very good at what he does. Trust in him and be happy you have a chance to do IVF with him. While the process is very emotional, he'll likely give you the best shot. We went into the office as the only ones smiling and keeping it light hearted. I think the staff and him fed off that and treated us like royalty when we were in there. We were on a first name basis with everyone there, get to know the nurses, blood takers, etc. and ask your spouse to go with you as much as they can. We imagine this would be hard to do alone, but we're fortunate each could go to all appointments.

Dr. Maruts experience shows and he backs all of his choices of care wirh science and experience. He has been kind and compassionate during this journey and was so excited to tell me that I had a PGS normal embryo last round.... We started off with the antoganistic protocol and when my eggs were not getting to day five blasts we switched to the Lupron flare protocol. Resulted in less eggs but better quality.
This [Fertility Center of IL] is a very large clinic so Ivf retrieval’s can feel like you are a number during retrieval’s. Describe the protocols Edward Marut (retired) used in your cycles at Fertility Centers of Illinois and their degree of success.
We started off with the antoganistic protocol and when my eggs were not getting to day five blasts we switched to the Lupron flare protocol. Resulted in less eggs but better quality.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Jen )
Excellent team back up dr Marut. They are so knowledgeable and called me back right away.
Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
This is a very large clinic so Ivf retrieval’s can feel like you are a number during retrieval’s. Your doctor is not always the one to retrieve as they have one doctor a day doing it. Your doctor will always try and do the implantation.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
I have insurance so it was very resonible
Describe Edward Marut (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
I have a PGS tested embryo and dr Marut said if I had two he would only suggest one as there is a high chance of implantation. If I had not had them tested and had multiple 5 day embryos he would have suggested putting them in.
Nice man [Dr. Edward Marut] but we had no results. We never saw him or heard form him unless we asked for a specific consultation with him. He didn't have much of a sense of urgency, even after each failed attempt (6 failed IUIs)....I like him a lot but I feel like I was more under the care of the, all be it wonderful, nurses rather than the doctor. We didn't spend much time investigating the root cause of my infertility...While I had a good rapport with him and I liked him, we started looking for a second option and a new doctor to closer manage our case.
They [the nurses at Fertility Centers of Illinois] are great but seemed to have motions to go through with little plan adjustment from the doctor...Easy to get to, fast, great folks working there...We've spend over $12k at this point..I like him [Dr. Edward Marut] a lot but I feel like I was more under the care of the, all be it wonderful, nurses rather than the doctor. What specific things went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Dr Marut is part of a big clinic so just be prepared to work with his nurse more than him....I saw Dr Marut at the beginning of my process. I mostly worked with the nurses there, he did not do my IUIs. He did perform my diagnostic hsg. I wish more tests were done earlier on, I’ve found out more about what has caused my infertility since seeing other doctors. Dr Marut was nice enough, and seemed positive that something might work, and I do feel he followed the appropriate steps you need to follow when it comes to infertility treatment...For a big clinic [FCI] they are organized. But you will feel like a number here.

I did not have success with this clinic but I might have if I didn’t move away, so if you are okay with a bigger clinic this might be a good choice....Mostly had contact with his [Dr. Marut]nurse and she was very caring... Dr. Marut is kind and patient during consult meetings. However, his biggest weakness was in not addressing my thin lining problem, despite my bringing it up repeatedly. That was why we ultimately decided to look for another doctor....Donna was flustered, disorganized, and long-winded during phone conversations. I frequently had to correct her on information about my own case and history and care and protocol. I also was once getting my blood drawn in the clinic and she loudly barged in to the room to congratulate another patient on her recent positive pregnancy test, and proceeded to ask her all sorts of questions about her pregnancy and baby plans. I found this insensitive to the rest of us in the room who were still struggling to conceive.

He [Dr. Marut] has a very good bedside manner. He does not give you the impression that he is giving you the run around...I believe that he intended to give me the best outcome possible, even if I had a poor outcome. Took time to reason some of the outcome with me, though could not provide any substantial reason that my outcome was less than desireable...ask questions!...

Dr. Marut was a very kind and positive Doctor, but we felt his optimism was misleading as we had four unsuccessful IUIs under his care. We would have preferred a more realistic diagnosis as we would have advanced to IVF much earlier in our treatment. He declined a request to participate in a one-to-one conversation with our insurance to expedite our treatment to IVF, so we also did not feel he was a strong advocate...Be very clear about your timeline.

I’m only with Marut bc of his successful rates with women my age. However his staff is unprofessional organized and not communicative. Marut NEVER reached out to me personally after this entire thing happend. ... the nurse failed to communicate correct steps in my cYcle which caused me to ovulate and my first days Le of IVF failed. Now I can’t continue another cycle bc COVID.
They [FCI] are Extremely Unorganized and have no leadership. I believe they are Understaffed and not thorough. Bc I was suppose to get a ultrasound and no one knew so I went home and they had to call me back in next day to do. They apologized and said the lab shouldn’t caught it ... I feel the nurses should log all next steps then call you to discuss them together. This way no step is missed and at least if u don’t remember on the portal there’s clarity

I’m only with Marut bc of his successful rates with women my age. However his staff is unprofessional organized and not communicative. Marut NEVER reached out to me personally after this entire thing happend. After I threatened law shit and media awareness, Sue from medical affairs called but never Marut reached out to his patients.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Only go to him to him if you are overages because the rest that comes with it from his staff is not worth the time. You can get more professionalism somewhere else.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Marut (retired) at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Because I was not taken care of. I was seeking a law suit because the nurse failed to communicate correct steps in my cYcle which caused me to ovulate and my first days Le of IVF failed. Now I can’t continue another cycle bc COVID. Sue in medical affairs was so rude to me and very shrouds.

Cycle. 150 Gono F. 450 pre mixed shot forgot the name. Did 1week 1/2 of that. They forgot to tell me to continue Cetritide and they were not open on weekends for me to ask.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Ashley (she took leave) then Terria Driver (she took leave) then it was the one that forgot to tell me to continue meds to stop ovulation. Her name is Abbey )
Ashley... she never uploaded my former medical records to portal. She took a leave.
Then I got Latorria... Latorria communicated but was really filling in and you could tell bc she did 50 million things so couldn’t focus on my care. She went on leave too...
Then Abbey... Abbey was very nice but forgot to tell me to continue the ovulation medicine. And didn’t log it till later.
I feel the nurses should log all next steps then call you to discuss them together. This way no step is missed and at least if u don’t remember on the portal there’s clarity

Yes! That’s an understatement. Terrible experience and I they caused me to loose time! I’ll be 45 in Nov so it was critical that we start right away. However due to clinical error my cycle failed!
I would have appreciated if he was interested in trying options that were not so cookie cutter and more tailored towards my personal situation. While he was thorough and detailed it appears he had a one fit all type of process. ... He was very patient and kind explained things very in-depth and was kind hearted ... Stand up for what you want it is your journey do not allow yourself to be convinced you don’t have other options if what is being explained does not feel right to you
They [Fertility Centers of Illinois] are warm and personal, they get to know you and are truly passionate about their job. They are there because they care and it shows. From the front seat to the blood techs there is not one individual I came in contact with who did not greet me with a smile and concern ... Everyone was so kind and compassionate they truly showed they cared and were invested in my journey
