She [Dr. Erica Johnstone] is always warm and friendly, makes us feel like she has time to explain everything to us. Which is important and makes us feel as at ease as we can. She offers options and talks us through what we feel is the best for us... Almost $11,000 for the ultrasounds, egg retrieval. $3500 medications $2800 embryo transfer $5000 PGS... Make sure to ask questions and that you understand your treatment plan. It puts you at ease and when you have an understanding as a patient it makes you feel like you are able to handle each step
It was difficult to get an appointment [at Univ of Utah]. I think I initially had a 3 month wait. But once I was seen, things started to happen. I got appointments right away and everyone was helpful and prompt. My fordt treatment was completed in Michigan, the clinic was great organizing the retrieval of my old. It’s and becoming up to date with my fordt treatment plan

Dr Johnstone always asks how I’m doing and really listens. She’s helped me and answered all my questions and even consoled me while I cried. But what really impressed me about her is the way she treats my husband. She talks with him and asks him how he is doing and listens the same way that she does with me.... on my current round we added a human growth hormone and did more Lupron.... Even when I’ve had failed rounds she personally calls and checks up on me.
The clinic [University of Utah] is great. Good atmosphere. Never running too far behind, so I’m usually not waiting long. I like that I can do multiple things in one visit in a timely manner. I can see a nurse, get my blood drawn and have an ultrasound in less than 30 minutes.... I know an egg retrieval round is around $10,000 plus meds. Embryo transfer around $3500 plus meds.... Denise and all the nurses are great and really good and responding to calls or emails. Denise explains things well and is very knowledgeable about IVF.
How was your experience with Erica Johnstone at University of Utah?
Dr Johnstone explains everything and gives me time to ask questions. I never feel like I’m wasting her time by asking lots of questions. She is compassionate and knowledgeable. Even when I’ve had failed rounds she personally calls and checks up on me. I always feel better after talking with Dr Johnstone.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Erica Johnstone at University of Utah?
Just go and talk with her. I never feel pushed to do something. She gives me options and choices and never is pushy. It doesn’t hurt to talk with her and see what she says.

I really love the care that Dr Johnstone provided for both my husband and me. While she may not be available all the time, she has excellent staff....I started with 4 different levels of clomid, and 3 different doses of Femara,...She takes time to visit with you, and make sure every question that you have is answered. She is honest with you, and really tells you like it is, which I really appreciate...Expect her to be extremely open with you about exactly where you're at.
I really love the nursing staff here [U of Utah]. They reach out to you, and make sure that you understand what's happening...I love the staff here. I really like that the clinic is open on Saturday's, and that I can come in without skipping work. My biggest complaints would be that while most of their doctors are great, I have been to a couple that I would never recommend. They lack a little bit of consistency in their practices. The other complaint that I had is their facilities. The first time that we went their, we went to the hospital, and were impressed with how nice it looked. However, as we got closer and closer to the OBGYN clinic there, the worse it looked.

I really love the care that Dr Johnstone provided for both my husband and me. While she may not be available all the time, she has excellent staff. When we suffered our first miscarriage, we went to a different doctor that was horrible, but we spoke to the staff there, and she was able to make us an appointment to come in on Monday(the next business day) and talk to us about a plan, and double check that the previous doctor was correct. (He wasn't). She hadn't physically seen us in months, and was still able to remember the conversations that we had. She really seems like she cares about you as a person.

However, as we got closer and closer to the OBGYN clinic there, the worse it looked. For a facility that's known to be on the cutting edge, it doesn't look very cutting age, it looks like it's stuck in the 80's. If I hadn't had a good experience with the doctors, I probably wouldn't have gone back.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at University of Utah.
About 80% of the time, I have had them call and change my appointment. I live about an hour away, and the nurses have called multiple times to move the appointment time up. It's extremely frustrating. But they are willing to work with you, if they do move the appointment time.

She [Dr. Johnstone] was very kind and point blank asked me what I wanted to do when I came to her wanting a second child. She got me going that day on meds and a vaginal ultrasound. I maybe saw her one other time but dealt with her NP mostly.... She definitely took her time with me. I could tell that she had done this a million times and wanted to get me what I wanted.
[University of Utah] Seems a little cold/stale, but it’s a good place. The chairs are leather like and make you sticky. The clinic seems a little dated in appearance but the quality of care is on point. The receptionist tries to remember your name. The ultrasound tech is the best! So kind and so experienced.... Thankfully IUI is not super expensive. My Insurance covered her visits and some of the testing. They did NOT cover the Andrology or IUI. Approx $500-600 for all of that.

I had some shots from a friends IVF cycle that she didn’t use. So we tried those along with Femara and I overproduced eggs. Good to know I could, but so discouraging to cancel a cycle. The next time I was just on femara 5 or 7.5 (can’t remember) and I had 3 good eggs. We gambled with the IUI and I now have 2 healthy 18 month old twins!
Describe your experience with your nurse at University of Utah. (Assigned nurse: I think her name was Lindsey)
She is an NP. She has prior fertility issues herself and so was very understanding and compassionate. She was direct and funny. I really liked her.

She [Dr. Johnstone] made me feel special by really listening to me, and ensuring I understood exactly what the process was.... Her strengths are that she is very kind, soft spoken, and delivers information in a clear manner. She wants you to be comfortable with her treatment approach and strongly takes your opinion into consideration. Her weakness is that she is almost too nice. I look at her as the expert and wanted her to be more open about what she thought I should do.
I think U of U is state of the art with their processes and fertility treatments. I think they can be more expensive than other clinics and less personalized in their approach. But they make up for that with being well run and very current on fertility procedures.... Most ultrasounds were covered by my insurance. The IUIs ranged around $300... They were great overall. I sometimes wished I had a dedicated nurse or coordinator though.

She wants you to be comfortable with her treatment approach and strongly takes your opinion into consideration. Her weakness is that she is almost too nice. I look at her as the expert and wanted her to be more open about what she thought I should do. I think it's great to have options and to know ultimately my opinion will be heard and followed, but I appreciate her expertise and think she should more strongly state what her educated opinion is. That would have helped me make better decisions.

My lack of eggs caused us to turn solely to IUI procedures [with Dr. Erica Johnstone] instead of IVF being an option for us. We spent years doing this procedure. We did a round of clomid, several ultrasounds to ensure the egg was growing and then once it was large enough we would trigger shot, insemination and then wait and hope. Our odds were terrible but we have two babies out of 30 IUI’s.
The staff at the U of U is organized and helpful even after hours! There were a lot of weekends spent at the U and they were always helpful and friendly. The nurses and staff are educated and give good advice. Also, if they weren’t available their timing in getting back to you was quick!... My husband and I started our journey with Johnstone in 2009. At 26 years old I had already started in to mani pause. She was kind in passing us the news. She loves her job and it shows in her job performance! Personable and professional all wrapped into one. She listened to me as I listened to my body and I feel that most doctors are not willing to listen that closely to their patients.

Dr. Johnston was an excellent communicator and was very precise and on time. She was very professional but had a warm disposition. She made me feel like how I feel mattered and was important. She was current on all the latest protocols and ways to help me.... We did gonal f 75 for 10-12 days and then triggered with ovidrel on day 15. We then did timed Intercourse. Progesterone supplements 5 days after trigger shot.
The U of Utah is a great clinic. I never had any problems scheduling and I always was able to get an appointment without much wait. I never waited too long in the waiting room and always felt welcomed... The nursing staff was so friendly and accommodating. They were so knowledgeable and could always help me with any questions I had. I felt like they became such a great support team through every cycle whether it worked or not I had support.

After looking at my HSG, she [Dr. Erica Johnstone] knew that there was something wrong with a tube. She allowed us to try to do one round of medicated IUI before surgery. That cycle didn’t work. I then had surgery and ended up needing one of tubes removed because of endometriosis. Since surgery, we have done 3 more IUI cycles and 2 mediated cycles. No luck. We have an appointment coming up to discuss further options.
They [staff at University of Utah] always take their time to see how you’re doing and answer any and all questions...From what I’ve discovered, this clinic’s prices are lower than others...Clean clinic and access to various technology and treatment options. She [Dr. Johnstone] is extremely kind and knowledgeable. She knows what she is doing and will answer any questions you have. She is straight forward and helpful during all of the emotional times. I’m grateful she is my dr because she doesn’t beat around the bush. She explained different courses of actions needed for my case and gave me all the details for each one and gave me her best recommendation.
This [Univ of Utah] clinic seems like it has the best of the best. There are multiple sections and you can get all of your care in one place. You don’t have to go to multiple places for different procedures. Also the lab is on site... They [the nursing staff] are all extremely kind and sympathetic... Dr johnstone always called me and my husband by name and new our story. She was kind but straight forward with her information and she never treated me like another number in the clinic. She knew who I was as a person

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I went to my appointment [with Dr. Johnstone] very anxious and with a lot of background information and a lot of questions and she listened to everything and was very attentive and responsive. I left feeling informed and we knew what the plan going forward should be. I have gone often for ultrasounds and such and I don’t see Dr. Johnstone every time but her whole team always knows what is going on and is very helpful and respectful.
[staff at University of Utah] Always aware of my situation, very attentive and helpful and kind...They have made me feel hopeful and heard in my concerns and fears. They and helpful, respective, intelligent, professional...I have PCOS, anovulation, and a possible blocked tube due to an ectopic pregnancy. We have tried clomid for a couple cycles and if they doesn’t work we do a test to see if my tubes are blocked and a semen analysis and then go from there.

Infertility is so scary and heartbreaking and knowing I have a great doctor and clinic helps bring me peace of mind.

I don’t really have anything to say for weakness of the clinic or dr. johnstone, honestly, they have all been great to me. They have made me feel hopeful and heard in my concerns and fears. They and helpful, respective, intelligent, professional. I am grateful to have found them and got in when I did. I hope that they will be able to help me achieve pregnancy.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Erica Johnstone at University of Utah.
I would say very fair. My insurance doesn’t cover anything there and it hasn’t been horrible. The initial visit I think was like 295 and then the ultrasounds are somewhere around 200-300 I think.

She started with a slow approach too see how my cycles were and then once she had a good idea about that we went on to IUI’s which sadly did not work well for me but since it was the most cost effective treatment she wanted to see if they would work. We did 3 rounds but in the end we were not getting the results we needed so we are now moving forward to IVF

She [Dr. Erica Johnstone] is very soft spoken which keeps me calm. She leads her team by example of excellence and love. You can tell she is quite respected among her co workers...remembers all my past appointments and my name even my husband's name and asked how we are doing in our daily lives...we were just doing clomid but I didnt produce good follicles so we added trazodone I did well with both but no pregnancy .
Small but cute lobby! Palm scan for sign in is amazing and saves so much time. Their [University of Utah] rooms are split into two locations but as long as you know to check in at the lobby you will be fine! Great parking...[nurses are] Very efficient and caring...[Dr. Erica Johnstone] leads her team by example of excellence and love. You can tell she is quite respected among her co workers.
