I would have like to have her [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] been more involved in the treatments. There wasn't a lot of involvement with her after the initial interview. She was nice and knowledgeable in the interview, and answered questions I had.... Didn't get to see her too often during IUI treatments. It was usually the nurses.
Nurses were great [at Advanced Fertility & Reproductive Endo Institute], but it would have been nice to see the same one for treatments to build a since of knowledge of my situation.... Offer more Doctors on staff. Be available on weekends. Very clean facility, nurses, and office staff were great. Blood work techs did a wonderful job. They really went above and beyond. They really did the best to make me feel taken care of.

I had to pay out of pocket for most of the treatment. My health insurance would only give a discount. I had to pay about 200 per shot.

She [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] used treatments of estrogen orally and injection. It was a 60 day treatment course prior to embryo transfer. She used donor eggs and both mine and my husband's sperm to create embryos. She then implanted one embryo fertilized by my husband and one embryo fertilized by me. Both embryos attached and we now have twins girls. They were born 9 weeks premature due to the fact that they were big babies and had no more room to grow in our surrogate's uterus.
She [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia at PREG- Columbia] did talk to us about the pros and cons. She understood that we had our hearts set on trying for twins. Being that we are a homosexual male couple, we were trying to create a pregnancy that had us both involved... I honestly see no weaknesses in them. They are 100% friendly and personable. For example, I walked into the clinic for the first time in 18 months and the front desk staff geeted me by name and asked how my babies were doing.
How was your experience with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Whitman-Elia was knowledgeable and had a great bedside manner. Even when we were confused about what was happening during a visit, she would take the time to explain why certain things were happening. For example, our surrogate and I are very good friends. The first thing that happened at most visits is that they would place us in separate rooms. This bothered us, however Dr. Whitman-Elia explained that gave her a chance to assess the situation while upholding patient confidentiality. While we may not have liked it at first, she was taking precautions to keep us all safe.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Listen to her and do what she says!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Whitman-Elia seemed to know us and our situation on a personal level no matter how much time had passed between visits. She and her staff mastered the art of telling us the realities of our situation, while also making us feel safe and secure.

I do not remember the exact protocol used. I can tell you she used treatments of estrogen orally and injection. It was a 60 day treatment course prior to embryo transfer. I felt like a human because Dr. Whitman was very kind and she went the extra mile to explain everything thoroughly in a way both my partner and I could understand...[new patient advice]Tell her everything you have struggled with concerning your fertility and make sure they test your partner for issues as well from the beginning to rule out if they have fertility issues
The staff [of PREG] are caring and professional. But, the appointments are very rushed and most procedures are performed by the nursing staff without the doctor present. There is also very limited options for financing if you need IVF and you don't self finance. The procedures are very expensive and not affordable in my opinion. If I am paying for an expensive procedure I would like the doctor to perform it and not the nursing staff.
How was your experience with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I felt like Dr. Whitman was very experienced doctor who's very knowledgeable. She is very compassionate and personable. The only thing I did agree with is the fact she did not perform the procedures and was not present at those times either. Different nurses performed all three of my IUI procedures.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Tell her everything you have struggled with concerning your fertility and make sure they test your partner for issues as well from the beginning to rule out if they have fertility issues. My partner is almost 10 years younger than me and they assumed I had the issues because of my age, but it turned out he has a major issue that could affect us getting pregnant even with assistance.

At my first appointment they could not find my medical records I had faxed over and were not going to see me. I took off of work for the appointment and I did not want to reschedule as suggested. It was due to their fax machine error. They called and asked the other office send them over again. I was able to see the doctor that day, but it was unprofessional to suggest cancelling my appointment.
Very thorough and communicated well. She [Dr. Gail Whitman- Elia] takes the time to lay everything out for you to understand. She answers questions that my husband and I had as well as gave us suggestions. Overall my experience was and still is amazing. I look forward to continuing treatment with her until we get the results we're looking for.... The treatment plans all started after thoroughly testing and examining me.
Staff members are all friendly and helpful [at PREG-Columbia]. Everyone is knowledgeable in their specific areas. The facility is very organized and warm. Patients should know that this is a clinic that they should at least try out. It doesn't hurt to try especially if you've tried other doctors already. There aren't any weaknesses that I can think of.... The nurses were always polite and helpful. They answered questions that my husband and I had. They comforted me when I needed comforting and showed empathy when needed.

Per my insurance, this doctor and facility are considered specialists therefore they were more expensive than a regular doctor. Costs are a little high considering the circumstances of already going through an emotional and difficult situation.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
There was just one time where my cycle day count was miscalculated and I was scheduled for a procedure too soon. I had to reschedule my appointment for a later date.
We ended up with 8 day 3 embryos [with Dr. Whitman-Elia]. 2 arrested and failed to grow. We transferred 2 and froze 4. We got a negative that cycle. As soon as I started my period we started all baseline blood work and did a transfer trial that included a endometrial scratch, lots and lots of estrogen patches, and PIO shots. On the day of transfer we thawed 2 embryos that didn’t survive so we thawed the last 2 and I got pregnant with my now 4 year old son.
{Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] Very new clinic with updated equipment. Not always easy to get in touch with billing coordinator...It is always very cold in the office so I would take a sweater with you to appointments...[nurse was] Always available by phone or email. Returned all calls and emails promptly. Always gave very detailed copies of instructions and protocols...My doctor suggested eSET as we are younger and I am in good health. We have only had success with transferring 2 embryos so we declined single embryo transfer. We were well aware of the risk of multiples and we were willing to accept that risk.
How was your experience with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I was extremely pleased with my care. Dr Whitman-Elia was very compassionate and you could tel she was invested in her patients. She took the time to get to know me and would ask how work and my other children were doing. I always felt very comfortable in her care and never second guessed anything that she suggested.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Make sure you go in with a list of questions to ask. She tends to almost overwhelm you with information but that is because she wants you to have all of the information available. I always took a notepad and would jot down notes from my appointments and any questions that I came up with.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
She took the time to explain in detail all test results, provided me with options and explained all available options so I could make an informed decision. I never felt rushed at any point in time during any of my cycles.
Describe the protocols Gail Whitman-Elia used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
My very first cycle was a fresh cycle. I was on follistim, ganerelix, triggered with a low dose HcG. We ended up with 8 day 3 embryos. Fast forward 2 years later we were ready for #2. The office had changed some protocols and now only suggested doing a freeze all cycle and only transferring 5 day embryos. We stuck with the same protocol as the first cycle follistim, ganerelix. We were able to retreive 13 embryos, 8 fertilized and 7 survived to day 5 embryos. We froze all 7 embryos and again as soon as my period came did baseline blood work, trial transfer with embryo scratch, estrogen patches, and PIO. We thawed 2 and they both survived. I have my almost 2 year old son from that cycle. In Nov of 2018 we decided to try again for #3. The Fertility Clinic I started with was called Advanced Fertility but when we started trying for #3 the clinic had been bought by PREG. Luckily Dr Whitman-Elia was still there. PREG had success with different protocols. So we started with initial blood work and baseline ultrasounds. Instead of estrogen patches I was taking oral estrogen as well as vaginal estrogen, there was no endometrial scratch this cycle, and I started PIO 5 days before transfer. We thawed 2 embryos and they both survived the thaw leaving us with 3 left in the freezer. I am currently 17 weeks with baby #3.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Our first 3 cycles were covered under my husbands insurance. He was a state employee and benefits covered 3 transfers at 70%. We paid more for medication than anything. I know with our first fresh cycle we paid $4,200 just for medication and our next retrevial cycle it was 5,000. Our last frozen cycle we were out of pocket minus some of the baseline testing that was covered under insurance. We paid almost 10,000

Dr. Whitman-Elia was very knowledgeable about my condition and what I needed to have done. She gave us options and made us feel hopeful. I only wished that she had done my IUI instead of the nurse or whomever did it. ... Another doctor ended up doing the procedure ... She was very personal and didn't sugarcoat anything. She heard everything I said and felt and it made me fell really good as a patient. ...
I loved everything about the clinic [PREG] and would go again. The atmosphere from the front desk staff, down to the nurses, Dr. Whitman-Elia and the ladies who handled the finances. Everyone was very nice and professional in how they handled you. This is a very emotional time for patients like myself and they made me feel good about what was going on with me and provided some hope for my husband and I.
How was your experience with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Whitman-Elia was very knowledgeable about my condition and what I needed to have done. She gave us options and made us feel hopeful. I only wished that she had done my IUI instead of the nurse or whomever did it. Reason being, the individual had a very hard time getting the sperm inserted and it was very painful. Another doctor ended up doing the procedure but I don't really feel as if it was a successful IUI. I don't think the sperm was inserted where it needed to be.

My insurance covered a portion but not all so there were times we paid out of pocket, especially for the meds.
dr Whitman is very good at what she does however if you don’t ask questions I think details that you may want to know get overlooked...We did one transfer with no success then tried again with a miscarriage. At that point dr Whitman suggested the ERA biopsy which ultimately is what made the difference and I was able to get pregnant and carry full term. I wish the ERA biopsy could be done to begin with because then I may still have the option to try again with leftover embryos. By the time we were pregnant we had used everything we had.
I was a patient of advance fertility before it became preg. I was scheduled to start a cycle that August and had a horrific experience at that time because I had no idea the clinic was changing. I was awaiting instructions and never received them so when I tried contacting all the phones were shut down and it was an emotional mess because I had no idea what was going on. I received a letter after all of that explaining the change over. It was honestly one of the most stressful times in my experience as a whole.
How was your experience with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Whitman is very kind. I was a lot to handle and she handled me well. I was a bit of a different situation and Dr. Whitman tried very hard to keep me positive and moving forward! She is very knowledgeable and informative. The only suggestion I’d have is to remember that your patients don’t do this stuff everyday even though you do. So trying to really break things down and simplify them for better understanding would be great.

Dr Whitman is so compassionate and truly cares about her patients and their needs. We have trusted her over the years and would recommend her to anyone! Her heart is truly in it! She has excellent bedside manner and respects each individual. She answers questions thoroughly and makes sure patients understand what is to be expected. Of all the doctors at PREG, I wish to see her each time.... Dr Whitman decided to do 2 embryo transfer and only one embryo survived and made it to a healthy full term
Everyone at the clinic [PREG] is really like family. They are all sweet, kind, caring and compassionate. They rejoice with you with good news and are there for you with the not so good news. When I walk in for an appointment, I can see their faces light up, as if they are all genuinely happy to see me. We have all really bonded over this process.... I know I had an important medication that was not called into my pharmacy by the nurse. Also, on our last egg retrieval and ICSI, a sperm specimen was ordered

I know I had an important medication that was not called into my pharmacy by the nurse.
Also, on our last egg retrieval and ICSI, a sperm specimen was ordered, then canceled due to lack of proper communication from the staff, and therefore, perhaps had a negative outcome on our embryos, as all 9 died.

After the second round of IVF and we had a blighted ovum we came to the table and discussed every aspect of the protocol. Dr. Whitman-elia suggested I have some genetic testing and after the results were back we changed the protocol, used a different sperm donor. The stimulation medication was adjusted and we focused on quality not quantity.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
The first couple of visits at the clinic were out of pocket and money was never an issue. The last round of IVF was covered by insurance.
She [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] is always present for every procedure and exam; she remembers small details about my husband and I and she uses the term “baby” rather than fetus. She has been there every step of the way and continues to set clear expectations while treating us like family... She is incredible about communicating and following up on emotions as well as health. I would recommend her to anyone. She continues to give us hope while explaining chances of pregnancy, health risks, lifestyle changes, etc.
The clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endo Group- Columbia] seems to lack a bit of communication between front desk staff and nurses/doctors. There were several times that my husband and I went in for testing and the front desk was unsure of our plan or tried to check us out without asking if we had any other appointments needed or any questions about our next step.

[Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] Communicated well, explained fertility procedures and expectations. Tried different approaches and gave it time. She was professional and dedicated. She had years of experience and took her time to explain every step. She did blood work and explained all the results. She also knew my previous doctor and we commented on past treatments. She explained to me the medications that I was going to be prescribed, the dose she recommended and Why and what to look for in each cycle day.
I think they [PREG] could think about the timing more throughly when doing iui. Once they did iui the same day they did the ovidrel. Also being open on the weekends for iui. One cycle o think they may have missed ovulation because they did my iui on a Monday. Also the nursing staff could give more details as far as the sperm quality. They gave us the count but not the motility, morphology...

She [Dr. Whitman-Elia] was very nice but it was hard getting answers... I came in taking Clomid and timed sex for about 6 months. The next step was using a injection to help ovulation. I would come in an get an ultrasound and blood work often. My husband got his sperm checked as well... She was very understanding that I was pregnant with conjoined twins. The nurse was compassionate but I didn't get to see the doctor that often.
They [PREG] worked you in quickly. They need to work on communication. I work as a reproductive health specialist and the things they explain was not easy to understand and o have two degrees. Breaking things down in terms any couple can understand will be helpful.... The nurse/ ultrasound tech was a joy to see each visit because she was pregnant... I felt like she [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] came across with no sense of urgency. I was left with a lot of questions but I’m not sure if this was because I didn’t understand everything being my first time visiting a doctor like this or her approach. I also feel like she saw my age and said it wasn’t me, she checked my tubes but got no other information from me, before getting one specimen from my husband and then saying it was him.
It was not expensive [at Piedmont Reproductive Endo Group- W Columbia] I think to have my tubes tested it was about $80 and $20 for my husbands specimen sample. Other than that we only saw her [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] for a free consultation.... She stated the problem was my husband with a low sperm count and put him on a bunch of multi vitamins.
