Success w/ Doc Too early to know
She [Dr. Ginny Ryan-Buresh] was kind, non judgemental, she was open to however we wanted to proceed, she helped me navigate through the options on how to proceed and gave her educated opinion on things, she answered all my questions, very open and honest...she didn't turn me away because of my BMI and never brought up my weight which was very important for me, I didn't feel judged or less than...
I think the staff [at University Reproductive Care - U of Wash] could be more communicative. I've called and left messages about things but received no call back but the thing I called about was taken care of, just not to my knowledge until later. The financial counselor is on top of things with insurance and answering your questions regarding costs of things...The clinic has no BMI limit for any services, which I think is hugely important to note as it can be a determinate factor in which someone has access to care or not...

Describe the protocols Ginny Ryan used in your cycles at University Reproductive Care - University of Washington and their degree of success.
I did a round of letrozole for this IUI cycle as it has mostly worked for all my previous cycles at the other clinic I was at. I have a CD13 ultrasound to check my follicle growth and will trigger if I have a big enough one. Then IUI the next day after trigger.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at University Reproductive Care - University of Washington.
I had some trouble with getting my prescription sent to the pharmacy and when they did send it it was for the wrong unit amount. It got fixed quickly but then I had trouble with a prior Authorization form needed for the med. Luckily they got it situated in time but it should've been taken care of in a more timely manner

[Dr. Ginny Ryan] did do our initial consult and the fresh transfer and she was very professional and kind. I have no concerns about how I was treated...Dr. Ryan spent a lot of time with my husband and I during our initial consult...I was already on birth control from a cancelled cycle at a different clinic so I was able to start lupron right away after my consult...
I absolutely loved that they [U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care] take a team approach when working on individual cases. Because there is a rotation of several REs on staff on any given day, their scheduling is very flexible. Other clinics have waiting lists that are months long...You'll likely see different doctors through your treatment but their process works well...University of Iowa was great about working with my insurance to get my cycle covered without any worries....
How was your experience with Ginny Ryan at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care?
I don't have very specific recollections of Dr. Ryan due to the way in which you can rotate through the doctors on staff at University of Iowa. Dr. Ryan did do our initial consult and the fresh transfer and she was very professional and kind. I have no concerns about how I was treated.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ginny Ryan at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care?
You'll likely see different doctors through your treatment but their process works well. It provides the most flexibility with scheduling and all of the doctors work closely together on all of their patient's. I would rather have 10 doctors reviewing my case instead of 1 anyway :)
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ginny Ryan at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care?
Dr. Ryan spent a lot of time with my husband and I during our initial consult.
Describe the protocols Ginny Ryan used in your cycles at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care and their degree of success.
I was already on birth control from a cancelled cycle at a different clinic so I was able to start lupron right away after my consult. At my baseline, they found a cyst and it delayed things by a few days but ultimately we kept going with the round. I was on 2 vials of menopur a day and 150 uis of Gonal F throught my 11 days of stims. I had the option of using follistim but I had leftover gonal from a different cycle so I chose to use Gonal for consistency.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
I don't remember the nursing staff but I don't have any specific memories that weren't positive. For that reason, I believe that all of the nursing staff was kind and helpful.
Describe your experience with U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
I absolutely loved that they take a team approach when working on individual cases. Because there is a rotation of several REs on staff on any given day, their scheduling is very flexible. Other clinics have waiting lists that are months long and if anything goes wrong during a cycle that causes cancellation or delays, it could be another several months before you can try again. University of Iowa scheduled my consult 2 weeks after I called and I was able to start my cycle right away. I had my egg retrieval within a month, which is probably not typical but I just happened to already be surpressed due to a cancelled cycle at a different clinic. University of Iowa was great about working with my insurance to get my cycle covered without any worries.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ginny Ryan at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
I was using a Starbucks plan through United Healthcare and University of Iowa and I never had to worry about paying a bill. They would file to insurance and then I'd eventually get bills but it was all done after the procedures. They didn't require any collection up front since I was using insurance that had no deductible.
Describe Ginny Ryan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
This clinic has criteria for allowing 2 embryos, which I didn't qualify for at the time. I was able to transfer the only good quality blastocyst that I had on day 5 (Fresh transfer) and it lead to a healthy, successful pregnancy.

She [Dr. Ryan] actually looked at me when she was speaking, unlike her colleague who continued my treatment later on. She was clear, considerate and gave me facts without talking down to me or making me feel dumb.... We elected to transfer both the embryo and the morula as they stated that they would be discarding the morula the next day anyway. Didn't matter, nothing took. But I think having the hope of more than one embryo in there helped with the anxiety & fear that nothing would work.
Our nursing experience [U of Iowa] varied from AMAZING and compassionate to gruff and clipped. One nurse cut me off multiple times (when she asked questions) and left my husband fuming because to him it showed that to this clinic we were just another number. He didn't attend any other visits with me as he didn't feel he could keep his mouth shut if we got that nurse again.... They talk a good game and do A LOT of cheerleading. Unfortunately this cheerleading behavior can lead to unrealistic expectations. From the beginning talking about how you have a 'perfect little cervix' and the lining on the uterus looks 'amazing' and 'you have tons of follicles, this won't be hard at all!' To the end, when nothing worked, and they lay blame on you (me, the woman that they didn't do any additional testing on because my spouse was the one with low count & low motility.

She was great at making me feel at ease, explaining the process very well and doing so while speaking to me and my spouse on a human level.

Describe the protocols Ginny Ryan used in your cycles at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care and their degree of success.
We did their basic protocol: estradoil to sync my cycle with their up time. Follistim AQ, then Menopur, then Ganirelix and HCG as my trigger shot. Throughout I had transvaginal ultrasounds to track my lining and follicle growth. Retrieval was done under general anesthesia and they were able to retrieve 8 eggs. 5 fertilized, 1 made it to embryo, 1 was a morula and 3 were discarded. In the end we were not successful in getting pregnant.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Ginny Ryan at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
Up front we were told what our cost would be ($11500 -13000 plus medications) We topped out at about $16000 plus medication costs coming in at $4700.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
When we were called to set up our first appointment we were offered a date that was, amazingly, only a few weeks away. I said we would take it, but after 6 hours of waiting for the appointment to appear on my MyChart I got nervous and called them back. The scheduler said I didn't confirm that I wanted the appointment (!?) and so they gave it to someone else. The clinic was able to work us back in on the same day, but the scheduler gave attitude every time I interacted with her after that. One other small thing, but after being told that my prescriptions were being sent to pharmacy before we left clinic we arrived in pharmacy to find out nothing had been ordered. They had to call the clinic to remind them to place the orders AND then had to call again after 15 minutes because they had missed a medication. Just made a long stressful day a lot longer and more stressful.

Describe Ginny Ryan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at U of Iowa Center for Advanced Reproductive Care.
Dr. Ryan insisted on eSET because we had an amazing hatching blastocyst available. I was hesitant about this because I had experienced multiple fresh cycle failures in the past at another clinic. I put my trust in Dr. Ryan and was blessed with a healthy singleton pregnancy resulting in a beautiful baby girl at full term.
