Dr. Cottrell is very calm and caring. She takes her time to explain things and I always felt reassured that we were taking the right steps towards achieving pregnancy. She always let us choose what we wanted to do, but did share her opinion and the science behind why she made certain recommendations.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
It’s a long and draining process, but each test and procedure that she recommends has a purpose and we learned so much during our time as a patient with her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
Dr. Cottrell really cared about me and my husband. She remembered details about our work and personal lives.
Describe the protocols Hanh Cottrell used in your cycles at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers and their degree of success.
We were given the option of IUI vs. IVF to start. We chose IVF right away due to the higher success rate, diminished ovarian reserve, endometriosis, and the desire to have multiple children. I had excision surgery prior to starting treatment with Dr. Cottrell. We used a stim protocol with menopur/gonal F and then added in cetrotide to prevent ovulation once my follicles were a certain size. Trigger was with both hcg and luprolide. We stimmed for an extra 5 days to try to get as many mature follicles as possible. Prior to treatment Dr. Cottrell predicted about 5-6 eggs per cycle for my specific situation. We ended up retrieving 6 mature eggs, 3 made it to blastocysts and PGT-A testing resulted in one normal, one mosaic and one abnormal embryo.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
All were very kind.
Describe your experience with IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
The clinic did have some minor staffing issues during Covid times, but overall most of my appointments were on time. They don’t have a lab at the East Lansing office so all blood work has to be drawn before 10:30 am and then it is shipped to the lab at the Bloomfield hills office and results come back later in the day.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
Egg retrieval and PGT-A testing was around $13k, embryo transfer around $4k, medications were $5k through an outside pharmacy. Monitoring ultrasounds and lab work were covered by my insurance even though they don’t provide any fertility coverage.
Describe Hanh Cottrell's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
Dr. Cottrell recommended a single embryo transfer for us since we did genetic testing. Had we not done genetic testing she would have left us decide between transferring one or two. We transferred one normal embryo which resulted in a healthy pregnancy. I’m very thankful that we had a singleton pregnancy as it was uncomplicated and I was able to stay very active and continue to work all the way to my due date.
She was the perfect doctor. Everything was explained in simple terms and not over explained in hard to understand doctor terms...was always happy and never talked down to us...spoke positive on our treatment and success - from the first meeting everything was taken in steps that were manageable and easy to understand - despite doing everything during COVID, she did everything to make sure I was comfortable and safe - she was always the doctor I saw - I really have no complaints!!
When you step into the [IVF Michigan Fertility Centers] lobby you are greeted to an area that is calming and relaxing. It is a smaller office but each room is private. They have conference rooms where you can talk with a nurse about your med protocol. The exam rooms were spacious, clean and full of natural light. The doctors’ offices are a good size when you have your consultations with your doctor. When you go for labs the area is clean and in a section of the office where you will have privacy.

We did shots for the egg retrieval with no side effects (don't remember the names of the drugs)
For transfer it was pills, patches and more shots. Again no side effects expect for the butt shots, those hurt and left bumps and bruises

Due to my age and what she saw it was recommend that I transfer a single embryo

Dr. Cottrell and her entire staff are completely personable and truly care for each and every patient they have. Describe your experience with your nurse at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers. (Assigned nurse: Hannah, Emily, Haley )
All of the nurses at the East Lansing IVF Michigan location are amazing. They will celebrate with you but also share pain in your losses. The nurses would tell my spouse and I to call them if we needed anything. They would always answer the on call emergency phone. Most of the time the nurses will be the ones doing the ultrasounds. They make you feel so comfortable and welcomed.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
The original consult with Dr Cottrell was $200. The cost of the IUI procedure itself was only $750 before billed to insurance. The most expensive thing we had to do was preIUI labs at another facility for Fertility purposes that costed about $2000 before billed to insurance. Each vaginal ultrasound costed us about $300 each time. We did two prior to insemination. Our first saline sonogram was a little more expensive I believe after insurance we paid $600. We purchased sperm through IVF Michigan Arbor Park lab that was $300 per vial.
[Dr. Hanh Cottrell] She was personable and every time we met with her she greeted us with a smile and by name. She even went as far as giving me her personal cell number after my miscarriage to talk whenever I needed her...I had a medicated ivf with icis using my own eggs and my husband's sperm...She did go over the risks of multiple embryo transfer but overall let us choose...She was very good at explaining everything before she did anything
[nurse of IVF Michigan Fertility Centers] She was very attentive, caring, and had amazing communication...Monitoring appointments were scheduled for the same time every other day...[clinic billing statements] are not very user friendly and are hard to read...Our total cost for the entire cycle was about $15000.00 and included a $4000 discount from the doctor. That did not include anesthesia, meds, or PGS testing.
How was your experience with Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
Dr Cottrell was amazing. She was very good at explaining everything before she did anything. She was very knowledgeable, the only "negative" feedback I have with her if you can call it negative is she speaks very quickly. Sometimes it can be overwhelming especially when you are trying to take notes. But when you say something to her about it she takes a step back and really helps you understand.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
Ask questions. Any questions you have weather you think they are stupid or not. Dr Cottrell never in any way made me feel bad for asking anything. She definitely knows her stuff and I learned so much from her.

Dr Cottrell was amazing to work with. She was personable and every time we met with her she greeted us with a smile and by name. She even went as far as giving me her personal cell number after my miscarriage to talk whenever I needed her. I can't wait to work with her in the future.
Describe the protocols Hanh Cottrell used in your cycles at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers and their degree of success.
I had a medicated ivf with icis using my own eggs and my husband's sperm. I first were on birth control for about 21 days and had a hysteroscopy during that time. I then started follistim menopure and ganirellix to grow and mature my eggs for retrieval. After retrieval I had a freeze all due to ohss after 6 weeks off meds we started our transfer meds, asprin, leupron, estrogen, and lovenox. We transferred 2 embryos and unfortunately it ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. After miscarriage we used cytotec to clean out the fetal tissue.
Describe your experience with your nurse at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers. (Assigned nurse: Hannah and Megan)
Hannah was my primary nurse before all of the covid19 stuff broke out. She was very attentive, caring, and had amazing communication. After the East Lansing office closed due to covid19 I was assigned to Megan in the Ann Arbor office and she has been amazing through my miscarriage. She checks up on me a couple times a week and is so organized even though taking care of extra patients during this time.
Describe your experience with IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
The East Lansing office is like family. They are organized, caring, communicative, and always there when you need them. The only thing I didn't like about the office was the billing statements. They are not very user friendly and are hard to read. But if you call and speak to billing they are really good at going over them with you to help understand.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
Monitoring appointments were scheduled for the same time every other day. It made it easy that all the appointments were at the same time.

Dr Cottrell let us choose what we thought best for us. She did go over the risks of multiple embryo transfer but overall let us choose.

Strengths- they [IVF Michigan Fertility Centers] inform you of what you need to do and when. They are always helpful at getting an answer to questions as they arise. Weakness- they were understaffed and unable to go over pricing ... I have to call back to check up on things when I haven’t heard in over a week. ...

Very good at explaining the process and options. I knew going into it that IVF would be my only option and she confirmed it from the get and didn’t offer any meaningless things. She was able to talk about PGA and go over the options it morally differs with the way my husband feels but it’s a process and she helped to ensure that they were trying to do what would get the best results.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
Do some research prior to going in to see them. It’s nice to have a solid base of information so that way everything isn’t a brand new topic. I’ve joined a couple of IVF online groups and it gets easier to talk about the more that you hear the different processes. They also have lots of tips on if you should do certain things for certain procedures. Talk about everything with your doctor. They’ve heard it all so just being as open and straightforward will be the most helpful.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
She answered all the questions on a deep level of understanding. I’m used to the medical jargon so it was nice to talk in great detail.
Describe the protocols Hanh Cottrell used in your cycles at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers and their degree of success.
I’ve had my tubes removed and my husband has a low sperm count so we have to have lots of help in this process. The mock ultrasound is a helpful way to prepare for IVF. This is as far as my treatment has gone so far. Trying to get the timing set up I have to go back on birth control which is strange to me since I haven’t needed it for years but it sets up for the procedures to be done timely. Trying to control a period and when your ovulating is no small accomplishment. I’ve had cysts on my ovaries that have been painful in the past so monitoring them for removal was important as well.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
They are very helpful however very back and forth. Let me check on that. I appreciate the double checking however after the 5th time it starts to get old and I’d rather talk with someone more knowledgeable. They were very upbeat and positive though.
Describe your experience with IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
Strengths- they inform you of what you need to do and when. They are always helpful at getting an answer to questions as they arise. Weakness- they were understaffed and unable to go over pricing, being someone who’s done medical billing I know quite a bit however it took a week from the initial consult to get prices on treatment options when you can tell it’s a very standard pricing sheet for out of pocket. This was received in an email. Wasn’t anything that seemed too difficult when we were told that the biller didn’t have time during our initial consult to meet with us and frankly that was a majority of my questions. Computer systems were down and they asked that we call back later, I understand but this was to my husband that has TBI and so it set his sample testing back a month by the time he called back that was the first opening. Delays in the process due to scheduling from a staffing standpoint. 1st available appts were always at least a month out.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
My insurance covers very little. I have coverage for the consult, some ultrasounds with 3 yearly max. All sperm testing will be covered. The water mock was $250 out of pocket for what my ins didn’t cover and the full IVF PGT-A procedure is over 17,560 without meds, ultrasounds and lab work. For IVF fresh it’s 11,860 without labs, ultrasound or meds.
Describe Hanh Cottrell's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
My doctor is very much for a single transfer. Due to my age and previous births being all C Sections a multiple birth could be hard at my “geriatric” age. However $17grand out of pocket for a procedure that might not work is terrifying. I’d prefer to be able to do multiple due to the fact that I’m already 35 and starting to run outta time.
What specific things went wrong at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
I had to call and get test results and ask what extra vitamins to be taking. I’m low on vitamin D and typically have low iron and was told to supplement. Returned calls have been obsolete. I have to call back to check up on things when I haven’t heard in over a week.
I have endometriomas on my ovaries and took longer to grow the follicles needed for retrieval. She [Dr. Cottrell] was very honest in the possibilities of not producing eggs but also pushed treatment to in the end be able to retrieve 8 eggs. In the process of moving forward with transfer, had to cancel fresh bc my body was not ready after retrieval. Froze eggs. Second attempt I had unknown spotting btw periods, Cottrell pushed to find answers before using my precious embryos, making sure my body is ready and at its best. Currently at a different med protocol, waiting for transfer.
The clinic [IVF Michigan Fertility Centers] is very helpful, answers any questions, anytime. I have never felt like an inconvenience. I use the nurses email frequently for non urgent questions. Dr. Cottrell is a very pleasant newer doctor to the IVF Michigan practice and she has been great to work with so far! We’ve been with her through one cycle of clomid and two with letrozole with menotropin injectables that all failed but she kept me Informed every step of the way and was able to be flexible with my very non-flexible work schedule to make it work to have ultrasounds and labs done when I was able to. She is always very friendly and remembered details that I had told her about my life outside of treatment.
Strengths of the clinic [IVF MI] would be friendliness, office space, patience of both the doctor and nurses, knowledgeable doctor, good bedside manner, willing to be flexible Weaknesses would be office hours that are difficult to work around while working, wait times, and that the front desk staff can be stand-offish at times.... The cost of IVF with freezing and thawing and with preimplantation genetics is about $17,500, not including procedures and medication. They offered me a discount for being in a healthcare profession.

Describe the protocols Hanh Cottrell used in your cycles at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers and their degree of success.
We had already failed 3 cycles of ovulation induction with letrozole with my primary OBGYN so we first tried a cycle of ovulation induction with clomid after our initial consultation. We then tried clomid with an ovidrel trigger which failed and then we tried letrozole with menopur and ovidrel for a hybrid third cycle with Dr. Cottrell. We then determined that IVF would be our next best step. We had a water sonogram which showed a potential small polyp in the uterus so we are planning a hysteroscopy with ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval with freezing and pre-implantation genetic screening prior to embryo transfer for our first IVF cycle
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
The nursing staff has all been excellent and receptive both on the phone and in person in the office for ultrasounds and answering questions.

She gave me the choice and informed me of the pros and cons of both. She said we have a greater chance of success with two but that the risk of multiples would be higher
She [Dr. Cottrell] railroaded us during our entire time there....We were sent for excessive tests despite the fact that nothing indicated anything wrong with my wife, but she said she found something and then when we were sent to correct got an oncall doctor who said nothing showed on the scans he was sent to review that warranted the procedure and wondered why we were even having it... Later we learned that i should have started a bunch of supplements for my male motility issues
The doctor was horrid, the nursing staff [IVF Michigan] felt judgmental and slow and the billing department screwed the billing up and never sent records. Overall this was a horrible facility to work through, and i wouldn't send my worst enemy to IVF michigan let alone a friend....The nurses lost paperwork, sent incorrect bills, and were so incredibly rude and we waited around for sometimes a few hours before we'd be seen by just a nurse, even though you could see them standing around chatting in the back.
How was your experience with Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
This doctor was all about the money. Having now been at 3 other doctors we know that now more than ever and we felt it back when we first saw her too. We were sent for excessive tests despite the fact that nothing indicated anything wrong with my wife, but she said she found something and then when we were sent to correct got an oncall doctor who said nothing showed on the scans he was sent to review that warranted the procedure and wondered why we were even having it and that was when we decided we were done. We weren't given any information, nurses never folloewd up with us or sent my meds to the right pharmacy and we never did get any of our medical file despite several requests including one from the clinic we switched to. It was an absolutely horrible stressful anxiety inducing process here with Dr. Cottrell
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
RUN AWAY
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
She railroaded us during our entire time there. After our consultation we were leary, but after working up tests and getting handwritten prescriptions to take to wherever we wanted to go through without giving us a list of pharmacies that carried meds, and after false information about my wife and her results (we spoke with another doctor) we ran (not walked) away from this practice. We feel like we wasted a month of meds and procedures here.
Describe the protocols Hanh Cottrell used in your cycles at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers and their degree of success.

prices here were astronomical! Our insurance was supposed to cover some of it but they billed out the whole thing. When I called they said they'd submitted it, but luckily before paying i called insurance and they'd never received it so we felt like they were just trying to get more money out of us.
What specific things went wrong at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
She [Dr. Hanh Cottrell] is a wonderful Dr. but is still new to the practice, so she doesn’t have entire independence in her care. She is very forward, honest and compassionate. She tries to make things that may have gone wrong, right again. She didn’t however explain things after the transfer when doing our follow up ultrasounds. My husband was unclear to what she was telling us & I had to sadly explain what the ultrasound showed...
I 100 percent informed them [staff at IVF Michigan] that I hyperstimulate easily. I informed them so they would take it into consideration when meds were prescribed. After retreival I was informed I was hyperstimulated which; caused us not to be able to do a fresh transfer. We were told we had to do a “freeze all” and then transfer later. I was never informed about a “freeze all.” This caused our cost to almost double and we were not prepared for that news.

Lupron to prevwnt ovulation. Oral estrogen 3 times daily with progesterone injections, aspirin, patches.

It was $350 for an SHG, $600 for anesthesia twice; once for a polyp removal, second time for retreival. $15,000 for retreival and transfer. $65 each blood draw, $35 each ultrasound, $6,300 for future FET etc...

She [Dr. Cottrell] was very personable and easy to talk to, but we felt very pressured into IVF. We have unexplained infertility and were interested in more testing and looking for answers, but her responses always came back to IVF only. We understand the odds are better with IVF, but didn’t have the money to do it. I asked about doing IUI which she agreed to, but I felt she was somewhat disappointed we didn’t jump right to IVF like she suggested.
The office [IVF Michigan] was clean and nicely decorated. I never had to wait very long for any appointments. My only complaint is there is a door between the waiting room and treatment area that does not do the best job blocking out noise. While waiting, I could hear everything other patients and the drs and nurses were saying.... Our IUI was $600 plus medication. They billed the ultrasounds and bloodwork through our insurance.
How was your experience with Hanh Cottrell at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers?
Although young, she seemed very knowledgeable. She was very personable and easy to talk to, but we felt very pressured into IVF.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Michigan Fertility Centers.
On the day of our consult, we were told our protocol would include menopur injections days 8-12 and that we should order 8 vials to be safe. When we began the IUI at our baseline appointment, we were told to do a injection on day 8 only, so ended up with extra medications.
I saw Dr. Cottrell of IVF Michigan. I really liked her, but I feel as if I am having to fight very hard for what tests & procedures that I feel would be beneficial to know. I understand that they see patients like me every day, but I would love to feel as if I am being treated on my specific issues & not just as another person with reoccurring loss.... I feel as if I was being treated out of a textbook & not patient based. I had to fight for what I believed in.
I don’t think there is a particular weakness of this clinic [IVF Michigan]. I just think a new patient needs to understand that this process is normally not quick & it does require that you need to be an advocate for yourself. This is a process where you need to do your research & understand your own medical history.... [Nursing Staff] Kind- but numb to this sort of thing. Helpful & responsive.... I feel as if I was being treated out of a textbook & not patient based.

One major strength of hers is that she [Dr. Hanh Cottrell] is upfront and doesn’t sugar coat. When she doesn’t think a treatment is going to work or beleives that something will work, when tells you why and gives you the science behind it. Though she is positive and wants the best, she is not going to sugar coat the seriousness of each situation in a compassionate way.
[IVF Michigan- Lansing is] Upfront, easy to get into contact with and very caring. They have conveyed that they are here for us through this entire process. One weakness would be that sometime lab results take a long time to get.... She and her staff always asked how we were doing. What were my feeling, what was scaring me, exciting me, etc.... [the nurse was] Friendly, on time, gentle, compassionate.

Grow large, mature follicles with healthy eggs. We did clomid 100 for 5 days, followed by 3 days of 75 memopur and then ovidril. After this wasn’t successful after getting me to ovulate, we decided IVF was our route. We are almost done with 1 month of birth control before starting Stims.

After a busy day she wrote up the wrong lab order for me, however I caught it before I went so it wasn’t a big deal at all.
Only 1 embryo transferred due to having PGS completed [with Dr. Cottrell]...She was genuinely interested in our every day life, laughed with us, was there if we had any questions even if after hours...From the very beginning at our consultation, Dr. Cottrell explained every step very clearly so we understood. She was compassionate and down to earth. She definitely eased my anxiety and also comforted me when I was feeling very overwhelmed before my egg retrieval. She took the time to sit with me to help calm my nerves.
ICSI was done as well as PGS [at IVF Michigan]. FET completed 1 month later due to needing hysteroscopy for further exploration. 1st FET successful. Both male and female infertility issues...Brittany [nurse] was quick to respond, compassionate and very personable!...Total for egg retrieval, hysteroscopy, PGS and transfer and meds $25000...I do not have anything bad to say about them. EVERYONE was wonderful and accommodating. They definitely care about their patients. Even do follow up calls to see how the pregnancy and birth went. We received a lovely card and a onesie for our baby as well as them inviting us back to see the baby.

Dr. Cottrell greeted us warmly and by name at the beginning of the appointment. She had already done a brief review of our history and had an idea of what we been through before the consult had even really started. She even gave condolences over our previous losses. ...Dr. Cottrell was knowledgeable and explained treatments, tests and information in an easy to understand way without relying heavily on jargon or make you feel that she was talking down to you. She spoke warmly while clearly laying out next steps and potential treatments might be based on test results.
Reception and sign in [at IVF Michigan] was quick. It took 30 seconds to realize I needed to sign in on the clipboard instead of speaking to the reception staff, the sign stating that could have been a little clearer. Overall it was quick and friendly. ... Nursing staff was great! I embarrassingly got faint while they were drawing blood and the nursing staff was quick to keep me comfortable without making me feel bad about it. They reiterated the information Dr. Cottrell had given about our tests and next steps.

She [Dr. Cottrell] is super friendly and explains the whole process. Very welcome to answer any questions... We visited her after trying to conceive for a year. She reviewed all our previous records and proceeded to do some of her own. She is very thorough and very proactive. She discussed problems I might be having that previous doctors never addressed.... Feel comfortable enough to speak to her about any questions you have. She will not make you feel embarrassed for asking.
Billing [IVF Michigan] is a bit tough to get ahold of and they don’t respond to voicemails. We requested information numerous times and no one called us back. It took until our next appt to ask our questions. As well we were over billed $1000 originally.... She [Dr. Cottrell] reviewed all our previous records and proceeded to do some of her own.
