Dr. Hatasaka is strongly against doing multiple embryo transfers. But he doesn't make you feel bad if that is the direction you would like to go...He then explained everything to me in detail on what our next steps would be. He let me know that we would need to do some testing and that we would most likely need to do IVF but that we would make a better plan-of-attack once we got the testing back...He basically told me we would be hitting the petal to the medal and knew how to steer my body in the direction it needed to go in order to create as many eggs as we could the first go around.
The [Reproductive Care Center] clinics front desk staff was always very friendly and so was the accounting team. The website and the patient portal could use a lot of work. The embryologists were always very thorough and you could tell they take their job very seriously...able to retrieve 14 eggs, 11 of those eggs fertilized, 3 of those eggs made it to day 5, with another 2 making it to day 6...
How was your experience with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
Over the years of trying to get pregnant, I had been seeing a Naturopathic Physician that was helping get my body in line with having a baby with the use of acupuncture, chinese medicine, healthy diet and exercise. Trying to go the natural route wasn't resulting in a pregnancy. So seeing an RE was the next logical step. I went to the University of Utah to a female doctor. She sat me down and hardly went over any of my history and then pulled out a chart and was like, "okay, so when are we going to do IVF?" Yes I knew that IVF most likely was my next step but it felt like she didn't care at all about my history and didn't explain anything to me. I left her office that day feeling deflated. I went back to my Naturopathic Physician, let's call her my friend because that's what she had become. I told her my experience with the University of Utah Doctor. She quickly shared a Doctor she had sent many of her patients to and in her words she said, "Dr. Hatasaka is just in-tune with the women's body." I don't know why I hadn't thought to get her opinion first. I guess I kind of felt like I was cheating on her by going to someone else. I quickly made and appointment with the Reproductive Care Center with Dr. Hatasaka. Can I just say my experience with Dr. Hatasaka the first time I sat down with him was night and day different. He took the time to get to know my history. He then explained everything to me in detail on what our next steps would be. He let me know that we would need to do some testing and that we would most likely need to do IVF but that we would make a better plan-of-attack once we got the testing back. I just wanted to hug that Doctor that day. He was a breath of fresh air. His demeanor was calm and reassuring. His bedside manner was very gentle and he always made sure to explain what he was doing. He was a very detailed Doctor and I never left his clinic or office not knowing what the next step was. There are two noteworthy gifts I would like to mention about Dr. Hatasaka. The first is that like my "friend" mentioned above, he was very in-tune with my body and what course of action we needed to take. He basically told me we would be hitting the petal to the medal and knew how to steer my body in the direction it needed to go in order to create as many eggs as we could the first go around. The second gift Dr. Hatasaka possesses is the ability to under sale and over deliver. I believe this is an important step because I never left feeling like my expectations weren't met. He was always truthful about what could go wrong. All in all, I would trust Dr. Hatasaka again and again. He is the reason I have my two miracle babies with me today. I would and do recommend him to all my friends, family, friends of friends, neighbors, strangers and on and on.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
Don't be afraid to ask questions. He doesn't make you feel dumb for asking questions. I never felt rushed and always felt welcome.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
Dr. Hataska was very caring. He was very kind in how he approached topics. If what you were talking about made you sad, he paused and passed the tissues. He took the time to explain things to you in a way that made sense. We never felt rushed and he always made you feel like he cared. We went back to him a second time, for a frozen transfer, and he remembered conversations that we had previously had. He is a very gentle and kind human.
Describe the protocols Harry Hatasaka used in your cycles at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
My infertility diagnosis was due to endometriosis, low amh (egg count) and a uterine fibroid so I had a lot going against me. I don't remember specifics about my drugs and treatments but all I know is that we put the "petal to the metal," were his words. I believe he had me on the highest dose of gonal f you could give. At first we weren't seeing a big result with the drugs and then overnight my eggs seemed to catch up just fine. He was able to retrieve 14 eggs, 11 of those eggs fertilized, 3 of those eggs made it to day 5, with another 2 making it to day 6.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
We have had two procedures done at the RCC. We had a fresh embryo transfer along with a frozen embryo transfer. The first nurses that we worked with were wonderful. They did a great job at explaining the next steps and made sure that you knew you were welcome to call with any questions that you had. Our second nurses weren't as great. I don't know if it was because they kind of expected you to know what you were doing because this wasn't your first time or what. But we felt a little more on our own.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
The clinics front desk staff was always very friendly and so was the accounting team. The website and the patient portal could use a lot of work. The embryologists were always very thorough and you could tell they take their job very seriously.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
We paid about $15,000 for a package that included 2 fresh cycles with the package being terminated after a live birth. We paid about $5,000 for medications.
Describe Harry Hatasaka's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Dr. Hatasaka is strongly against doing multiple embryo transfers. But he doesn't make you feel bad if that is the direction you would like to go. Again, because he is so detailed he likes to explain to you the risks that is associated with multiple embryo transfers and ultimately let's you make that decision on your own.

He [Dr. Hatasaka] is one of the most compassionate doctors I have ever had. Listens to his patients and you never feel rushed off...He is extremely through with all of his explanations of procedures and let’s you be a part of it as much as you want...Dr. Hatasaka is very against transferring more than 1 embryo to avoid having complications of twins...He has provided many options to us and he always reassures me that we will bring home a healthy baby one of these days...
Most of the nurses [at Kaiser Permanente Sacramento] are excellent. My account got lost in the shuffle and I almost had to cancel my transfer because they forgot about my case or it got lost. They did make it up to me but my protocol was a bit off...Strengths are this clinic is very reasonably priced if you are already a Kaiser member. They do everything to help you with offsetting the costs with grants and programs that are available. Weaknesses: you don’t always see your doctor that your under. There is a lot of room for miscommunications because of that....

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente Sacramento.
My doctor (Sara Gilbert) was on her way out of the clinic who I was under. I was already set to do a transfer and somehow I got lost in the shuffle and forgot about. I had already paid for my transfer and no one contacted me about my protocol until I called and it was almost too late. Truly think this was a reason my transfer didn’t work.

I love that everyone [At Reproductive Care Center] there is so nice for the moment you walk in the door until you leave. The ladies checking people in do their best to get to know you and greet you by name, every nurse I worked with was so nice, and even the phlebotomist was so good with me. I am a little nervous about getting my blood drawn and she made sure she kept our conversation little and fun to help ease my nerves.

Since I have a low ovarian reserve Dr. Hatasaka but me in the highest dose of gonal-f to see if we could get enough eggs to retrieve. The first go around we only got 2 eggs so we didn't do retrieval and we'r are in the second round of meds now so fingers crossed it will work if not we will try one more round of meds before we explore other options. Other options will be donor eggs or embryos or adoption.

My appointments for the first round were mostly covered because of where I was at with my insurance so I paid for the first consultation but every visit after was only $25 for the copay. The medication was not covered however and if it wasn't for having money put into an HSA I won't have been able to pay for it it was about $3,800. This second go around I am covering all appointments plus the medication it is $150 pre visit plus the same cost for medication. If this round doesn't work we well need to put off doing a 3rd round until we can save up some more money.

He is extremely caring but also extremely proactive, which I need for my diagnosis [my AMH at 1.21 (14%)]. He didn’t sugarcoat the urgency that we needed to get the ball rolling, but acknowledged the pain and sorrow I’m feeling. He explained that unfortunately i was dealt with a bad deck of cards but he is still hopeful. He said “Let’s jump on this horse and run as fast as we can before your eggs are gone”. I needed that.
The first time I called [RRC] to schedule my first consultation, I was extremely nervous and worried, the lady that helped me was so kind and she knew how to make you feel better about making that initial phone call. Every time I’ve called with questions about appointments, payments, medication, etc. they always immediately directed me to the right person. They are very extremely personal and kind.

I was referred to Harry Hatasaka from my OB after Clomid and Femara didn’t work. He does a series of 5 tests (I did 3 with my OB. HSG, semen analysis, blood work). With Hatasaka I did the final 2 tests, a very thorough blood test for my eggs, an ultrasound to see what was going on while I was on my period, and we also did a genetic test. Everything was looking very good until my blood test came back. It came back extremely low. On a scale from 1 to 20 for my quantity, it unfortunately came back as a 4 and my AMH at 1.21 (14%). We are officially starting me on the hormone shots in the next few weeks. And if I only release a certain amount of eggs, I’ll jump right into IVF. As of right now, IVF is looking like the best bet to have my own biological child.

With a few consultations, ultrasounds, bloodwork, I’m around $1000-$1500. My first round of shots is expected to be around $2500. The IVF plan we are going with is around $24,000.

I have tried time intercourse and IUI at another office. So far I have only had a consult with him. I was never told at my other office why things didn’t work. He however told me I had a high AMH but no other symptoms of PCOS so he diagnosed me with PCOM. So our next step is to do IVF. We plan on doing two fresh cycles and all the frozen embryos we get. We also plan on doing genetic testing because we aren’t sure with my high AMH how my follicles are going to be. We are just waiting at this point because we are not financially ready.

He [Dr. Hatasaka] was very patient and took the time to fully explain all scenarios possible as well as the steps necessary in result to getting pregnant. He made sure we were aware and familiar with each step while never rushing us out the door....He did a fantastic job walking us through this process. He is very thorough and detailed when relaying information or test results to patients. He does a great job at taking into consideration the emotional struggle infertility causes and is very sensitive when discussing options.
The clinic [Reproductive Care Center] is nice, clean and the staff is exceptionally nice. The only downfall is if you're a new patient it may take you a little bit to get an appointment. I have been on Femara days 5-7 and using an OPK ovulation kit to detect my ovulation. Once that occurs, I have been given direct numbers to his nurses who then arrange an IUI immediately. They are available 7 days a week. Dr. Hatasaka has switched my medication from clomid to see if it will result differently. He has a very clear plan for us as we continue into different phases or procedures.

The clinic is nice, clean and the staff is exceptionally nice. The only downfall is if you're a new patient it may take you a little bit to get an appointment. But the nursing team, doctors and facilities are worth waiting for if you are starting the fertility journey.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Because my insurance doesn't cover fertility costs, we've paid out of pocket this far. Therefore, our initial cost about $120. Around $300 for testing, results and consolation. $500 for each IUI procedure. Medications were $9 each round.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
The doctor [Dr. Hatasaka] is very warm and caring. In comparing him with other doctors, he is very personable and you can tell he is in your corner. He really seems to like his patients and desire their success. He gave us a very thorough explanation of all the procedures and testing.... We were first treated for male Factor infertility. After lots of testing our doctor determined varicoceles as the main fertility issue. I receive surgery and testing was done later to determine effectiveness.
The clinic [Reproductive Care Center] is very nice and well-organized. The website is not very user-friendly in the IVF portal. I have found it fairly difficult to track test results and make payments using the online system. However they are very quick and eager to help when problems arise.... The only thing that went wrong was the sharing of results between my urologist and my fertility doctor at RCC

Dr. Hatasaka has a very quiet voice and I had to strain to hear him, but he has such a warm welcoming aura, and such an empathetic tenderness towards his patients. I could tell that his patients came first, and that’s what sold me. He gave us full explanations on what to expect and what our best options were. My husband and I never felt we were pushed into one option and then told to do a bunch of tests without knowing what they were for. The level of detail that is provided is such a big deal for me because I truly want to understand what we are putting into our bodies and what each thing is for. I’ve only gone to see Dr. Hatasaka a couple times but we are now to the stage of invitro and I am extremely comfortable in his care.
The clinic [RRC-Sandy] also has a mandatory IVF class that patients need to take before starting. The class was 3 hours of a PowerPoint presentation. It was grueling, but extremely informational. We had some prior knowledge of what to expect, but it’s was extremely helpful and we even practiced mixing together the medicine for injections and giving them to fake belly’s. The nurse giving the class gave a great piece of advice, “never feel like you’re asking too many questions or think you are bothering us because you’re not. This is our job and we are here to help you.” It was really nice to hear that, because there is so much information and it’s extremely overwhelming and at times confusing. So to have the staff be supportive is another weight lifted.

I was desperately seeking some warm bedside manner after our last Dr. I’m extremely sensitive and want to be fully trusting in our doctor. He is in high demand so you might have to wait a while for a consultation.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
He took so much time to go over our new found test results (my PCOM, a form of PCOS) and was very empathetic while we absorbed the new and heartbreaking information. He and his staff are great at breaking down every piece of information and explaining the reasoning for each thing. He even explained the history of PCOS and explained the differences. I tried to do internet research on it, and there really is nothing that comes up for PCOM, so I was extremely grateful for his insight. Instead of it being a business transaction, he is helping us have a baby and that is his number one concern.
Describe the protocols Harry Hatasaka used in your cycles at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
So far we have just done some preliminary blood tests before we proceed onto IVF. Such as infectious disease, OAR, baseline ultrasound and a saline sonogram to check my follicles in resting stage and ovulation and a couple others (I can’t remember the abbreviation). He and his staff explained why we needed to wait at certain times in my cycle to do the tests to get the best results. The baseline ultrasound was to show a resting stage of the ovaries and the saline sonogram was to show the active stage of the ovaries, and they were able to measure follicle sizes that way. He did say that he would be monitoring my bloodwork closely when we start doing injections and adjust prescriptions as needed, since I am now at a risk to hyperstimulate.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic). (Assigned nurse: Andrea)
Andrea is extremely knowledgeable and organized, I’ve only worked with her a few times since we’ve switched, but she is punctual about getting results back and great at explaining them over the phone.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Overall I have had a good experience at this clinic. Obviously getting bad news sucks anywhere, but the staff has always been kind and helpful. They are great at explaining the billing and are willing to call insurance companies. They know that most insurance companies don’t pay, so they have a lot of options for payment plans. When I have called after hours to schedule, they are usually pretty prompt about getting back to me in the morning, and they really work with your schedule to make appointments work. I really didn’t know what to expect as far as a clinic runs but I’ve had friends go to other clinics that were not upfront about telling them the price of procedures. I did not experience that here, the billing staff was extremely thorough about all of the procedures and different options, and the pricing was broken down exactly. The clinic also has a mandatory IVF class that patients need to take before starting. The class was 3 hours of a PowerPoint presentation. It was grueling, but extremely informational. We had some prior knowledge of what to expect, but it’s was extremely helpful and we even practiced mixing together the medicine for injections and giving them to fake belly’s. So to have the staff be supportive is another weight lifted.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
The billing team gave us a list of breakdown prices with and without medications. They offer a money back guarantee which starts at $24,000 and can go up. This does not include medications. Our insurance was billed for the bloodwork, the saline sonogram was paid out of pocket for $460. We haven’t received a bill yet for our bloodwork, so I’m not sure the amount we will have to pay yet. We switched doctors within the clinic and I was concerned we would have to pay another consultation fee, but they waived it.
Describe Harry Hatasaka's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
This was very interesting to me, I thought that protocol was to place multiple embryos but Dr. Hatasaka explained that there is technology now to get the embryos to a more advanced stage so the likelihood of them implanting is much more successful. He explained that your body is more likely to accept one, rather than multiples because you’re body is trying to provide nutrients to the embryos but can be spread thin if there is more than one. So now normal protocol is one embryo because you are more likely to have a live birth which is the goal!

I am still very early on in the process. My OBGYN prescribed Clomid when she officially diagnosed me with unexplained infertility. When my blood work came back, my AMH levels were alarmingly low. Dr. Hatasaka told me to stop taking the Clomid immediately and I am going back in next week for some tests to determine if my ovarian reserve is, in fact, as low as the AMH indicated.

Dr Hatasaka had no concept of time (in a good way!). He made sure he answered all of my questions and thoroughly explained my procedure(s) without rushing out of the room to help another patient. He made me feel like I was his only patient each time I came in. ... His attention to detail, his knowledge and wisdom in the infertility world, his kind demeanor, his way of explaining situations, EVERYTHING, is just incredible.
They [Reproductive Care Center] have a department for every question you may have, outside of the medical staff (ex. billing, egg donor, insurance questions, front desk, embryologists/lab, etc) and they all reside under the same roof which makes it very convenient for you as the patient. I had a few bills mailed to me and I knew they were already paid for. I called the billing department and they got it fixed within minutes.

Best doctor at RCC, hands down! My husband and I have now done 4 complete, fresh transfer cycles of IVF and have seen/been treated/had appointments with most of the doctors in this clinic. I recently switched doctors and made Hatasaka my primary physician at the clinic and would recommend him over and over. His attention to detail, his knowledge and wisdom in the infertility world, his kind demeanor, his way of explaining situations, EVERYTHING, is just incredible.

Describe the protocols Harry Hatasaka used in your cycles at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
I am diagnosed with decreased ovarian reserve (DOR) which is pretty unique considering I was 23 when I was told. This is a unique situation in itself, but I feel Dr Hatasaka looked at my charts from previous cycles and how my body reacted to each injection or medication it was given with great care. He knew what would produce the best results (more eggs for me), but also considered how my body was reacting to the medications. He even noticed fluid on my uterine wall after one particular cycle and took great care in treating that.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
The best qualities the RCC nursing staff has is empathy and compassion. Many of them have even experience infertility in their own personal lives and from that create an understanding and compassionate atmosphere. It is truly heartwarming. They are so involved in my life and infertility journey that they have become lifelong friends.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
We opted for the multi cycle discount which included 4 fresh cycles (not including transferring frozen embryos/cycles) which costs about $22,000. That price includes everything from ultrasounds, tests, procedures, clinic visits and just about everything except for medications. Medication for each cycle is not included and I needed A LOT (more than the average) and that ranged from $3,000-$6,500 per cycle.
Describe Harry Hatasaka's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Every patient has a different story/ results and I believe RCC knows that. They took the time to sit with me and explain each situation as far as how many embryos to transfer when I got to that point in each cycle.

I've had both experiences where I've wished that Dr. Hataska's delivery of a message would have been gentler or kinder, as well as moments where has been incredibly sensitive and kind in delivering terrible news. His strength is that he's very analytical and has all the numbers with whatever we're talking. I appreciate having those numbers as it's given us starting point for expectation. He lives by the numbers and some that approach could seem sterile or without hope.
Positives: I've never had to wait long for any appointments and they've been good about getting me appointments that work with my schedule. My one complaint would be with the billing department [Reproductive Care Center] as I've felt they aren't on top of things as the rest of the clinic.... Losing weight will be one of the first things he will recommend. For some, knowing that he won't move forward with treatment until they've lost weight can be demoralizing for many women and he may not be a good fit for those who struggle with this.

Infertility is a rode with ups and downs. Because it is a journey that goes up and down, it can feel like we're not being treated as human because we're scared, tried, stressed, or overwhelmed. No doctor is perfect 100% and able to predict exactly what we may need that day. For us, I have felt like has done his best to be compassionate in that journey and treat me like a human with feelings, questions, fears, joys, and concerns.
Describe the protocols Harry Hatasaka used in your cycles at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
We have done two egg retrieval and 1fresh transfer that ended in a miscarriage. Our first egg retrieval he started low on medication as he wanted to keep me from hyper stimulating. We used a combination of cetrotide, Menopur, and Gonal F. Of the 10-12 eggs they were expecting based on mature follicles, we only ended up with 4 eggs retrieved. All 4 were fertilized. By day 3 we had 2. We transferred one at day three and froze the second good embryo on day 5. At our 7 week appointment the baby's heartbeat was slow. We were told that most likely we'd lose it. At our next appointment a week later, there was no longer a heartbeat. We were anxious to transfer our frozen embryo as soon as we'd had the three months to recover from the miscarriage. In our post-miscarriage consultation, Dr. Hatasaka knew that we wanted more than 1 child and encouraged us to think about doing a second egg retrieval before our FET just in case it was successful to hopefully have better egg quality than a year or two down the road which we decided to do. Due to the small numbers we had the first time, I requested that we go with a more aggressive approach in hopes of having more embryos to freeze. Our medication protocol was Gonal-F and the cetrotide. They got 12 eggs, 10 of which were fertilized. At day 7 we had 1 good, and 6 fair quality embryos. By day 5 we only had 2 fair quality embryos which we sent off for testing. One came back with trisomery 13, while the other had a partial mosaic on chromosome 1. While we are not planning on transferring the trisomery 13, we may transfer the second one at a later date. I did hyper stim with the second egg retrieval and are hoping to transfer our frozen embryo from the first cycle in April.

Normally they've been really good about getting information to us, but on the last cycle they've were super slow in getting us the information about the genetic testing even though we'd known the clinic had received them. This could have been due to Dr. Hataska giving this information to us instead of the nurse.

He [Dr. Hatasaka] sat with us for over an hour and went through our entire chart and history and explained everything he wanted to look into and why. He took the time get to know our situation before making a plan of action...He has a very calm demeanor, is chatty, and likes to dive deep into the issue and explain everything as we go so we know what's happening. Goes through the pros and cons of procedures and makes sure we understand.
[The nurses at Reproductive Care Center are] Generally kind, not much else stands out...Have only been here through one full cycle, so far everything had been pretty good, no real strengths or weaknesses come to mind. They give you a packet full of info about the clinic and doctors, with info about local supporters groups, when come in for your first appointment...Over $350 for my initial blood work and ultrasoun

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
He likes to start with a full spectrum of tests, be prepared for blood, semen, ultrasound, and have your full medical history of both partners, including family history. When doing the tests, you deal with nurses and staff, and have to schedule appointments and pay a copay just to have your blood drawn. You don't see the doctor at these appointments.

We are still working on regulating my cycles, and getting my thyroid and prolactin levels down, going in every 4 weeks to retest until my numbers are within normal, then we will be put on femara for a round of IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Generally kind, not much else stands out.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Have only been here through one full cycle, so far everything had been pretty good, no real strengths or weaknesses come to mind. They give you a packet full of info about the clinic and doctors, with info about local supporters groups, when come in for your first appointment
Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Over $350 for my initial blood work and ultrasound, $300 for seven analysis, $25 copay at every appointment, even just getting a blood draw, they are going to try and bill insurance for everything, but we will most likely have to cover everything out of pockets.

I thought he [Dr. Harry Hatasaka] was very knowledgeable about fertility and was able to explain things clearly, but only if I asked clarifying questions. I was disappointed that he wasn't at every appointment and procedure. He was very absent. He also repeated/rehearsed my file back to me each time he saw me as though he was trying to remind himself of who I was. This was frustrating to me because I didn't need a replay of the failures in the past.
They [Reproductive Care Center] ordered a semen analysis when we already had one completed and charged us for it twice. They also over charged us on the procedures we did have done. They were able.to resolve all of these issues...I absolutely hated that the nurses call with the results of blood work. This should be the doctors responsibility and duty. I also did not like that a nurse did my IUIs. Again, that should be the doctors job. I felt very much like just another number there and no one treated me as an individual.

Ask for what you want because if you dont you probably wont get it.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
I felt like he had seen so many patients like me and my case was no unique or special. He didn't make it a point to reach out to me after my miscarriage or my failed IUI to talk through what happened or what next steps would be.
Describe the protocols Harry Hatasaka used in your cycles at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
I was asked to take femara for my cycles to boost my ovulation. I took it for one cycle and didn't get a positive ovulation indicator on my test. He didnt suggest a trigger shot because I had lab work that showed I ovulated in previous months. So I took femara for another cycle and did the ovulation test at a different time during the day and got a positive. I had an IUI procedure done with my husbands fresh sperm. This resulted in a pregnancy which I miscarried at 6 weeks. The following month I took femara again, with another positive ovulation test and had another IUI procedure done. This one didnt result in a pregnancy. I decided not to pursue treatments after this.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
They did a great job explaining when and if I should use the trigger shot. They also were available to me when I had questions. If they didnt know the answer they were honest and called me back later with the answer. Some nurses did this better than others.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
We had all of our testing done with my obgyn so my insurance would cover it. We had our semen analysis done through a study so we didnt have to pay for it. We only paid RCC for the IUI and ultrasounds. I think the total for each cycle was $500-600. And we did two cycles.

Dr Hatasaka would spend all the time i needed with him and would answer all my questions and verify the validity of value of those questions, and speak in depth on everything involved...Dr Hatasaka always returned my calls and spent a thorough amount of time talking through things with me...i saw my doctor at every appointment (except when it was just a blood draw). On too many occasions the nurse [at RRC] Michelle called me with different information than i had received in the office so I had to question her and then she had to go back to the doctor to get the right information. It was frustrating and time consuming and worrisome. I was also frustrated that she didn’t keep great details about my appointments in my charts so it was not unusual for me to have to re-communicate and reconfirm my situation and question dosages etc
How was your experience with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
The only weakness i can think of is not actually a weakness—he explains things so well and in such detail that our meetings were always long. And i loved it. Knowing all the details of all the scenarios I was facing was comforting to me. He always had educated answers for my questions. Every time i spoke with him i learned more, in a good way. Dr Hatasaka always returned my calls and spent a thorough amount of time talking through things with me. When his clinic or staff were below expectations, he always took my side. When we discovered bad news in ultrasounds or test results, he was always sympathetic and sincere and kind. And when we had good news, he was cheering and smiling as much as I was. I always had great interactions with him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
Ask lots of questions because Dr Hatasaka has the answers. He will be straightforward and honest and helpful.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
Dr Hatasaka would spend all the time i needed with him and would answer all my questions and verify the validity of value of those questions, and speak in depth on everything involved. He is extremely comforting to talk to and it is very apparent he cares deeply for his patients. I felt like he had the heart of a loving grandfather for my case with his remarkable expertise from decades of study and practice. I always felt like i was his most important person when i spoke with him. I know my worries and successes with infertility were felt just as deeply for him as they were for me. I cannot say enough good things about his bedside manner and his knowledge and experience. I trust him wholeheartedly. I know he has my best interest as his priority. He is candid but extremely sensitive and heartfelt and kind. His style of communication has been perfect for me. I always recommend him to anyone i talk to suffering from infertility. He is a remarkably smart doctor and wonderful person.
Describe the protocols Harry Hatasaka used in your cycles at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
All fresh IVF cycle protocols started with birth control, then stimulated with injections for a number of days, then did the egg retrieval, followed by an embryo transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic). (Assigned nurse: Michelle)
For loving working with Dr Hatasaka, i unfortunately did not love the nurse/care coordinator (Michelle). She was stand of fish, grumpy most days, was not a clear communicator, lacked attention to detail? and she was easily irritated. As a result I felt the success of my IVF cycles were at risk with her as my coordinator so I was hyper vigilant to ensure i knew all the details and had to reconfirm them with her often to ensure she didn’t give me incorrect instructions. Fortunately, she is no longer with the RCC. Prior to Michelle, i worked with Crystal who was everything a nurse in an infertility clinic should be—smart, detail oriented, calming, trustworthy, helpful, kind, extremely competent.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Weaknesses: - Dr Heiner (the owner) makes it feel like he is more concerned about running a business than helping people. His good bedside manner is completely lacking. He is gruff and to the point without much care for the patients emotions (infertility is very emotional!). I had to work with him on a few occasions and was always left feeling frustrated. I was so grateful he wasn’t my primary doctor there. - their office is waaaay too small for the number of employees and patients they have in there day to day - wait times for appointments are always long...if i wasn’t the very first patient of the day, i always waited 20-30+ minutes before being taken back - it was apparent the clinical staff and billing staff were overworked and stressed. I never knew what was going on except that i could feel the stress of the employees - their pricing model is so expensive Strengthens: - Dr Hatasaka - their front desk employees were always kind, cheerful, helpful people - i saw my doctor at every appointment (except when it was just a blood draw). He did all my exams and ultrasounds, so we both knew first hand what was going on
Describe the costs associated with your care under Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
Multi-cycle package (2 fresh cycles) for $20,000 Plus $4000 to add a 3rd IVF cycle Plus Medications (about $10-12k per fresh cycle x 3, and $4k for a frozen embryo transfer x 1) Plus Surgery for endometriosis (estimate about $3K) Plus Surgery for an ectopic pregnancy removal Plus blood draws (about $200+)
Describe Harry Hatasaka's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic).
He always transferred 2 embryos for the fresh cycles. I was glad for this because my embryos weren’t amazing but they were pretty good.

I was surprised that more detailed information was not included in them.

Dr. Hatasaka is the most caring and compassionate doctor I have ever had, which is needed when dealing with infertility!...Strengths- Treats you as a human and not a number. Is able to communicate...Will tell you which treatment plan you need without going right to the most expensive. I feel like he understands that is can get expensive so he looks for ways to lower that expense...You may have to wait 10-20 minutes in the waiting room, but once you are in the room with him, he treats you like you are his only patient and will not leave until he answers all of your questions.
Nursing staff [at Reproductive Care Center] always got back with me in a timely manner when I had questions. Very kind. Explain things well...Clinic- I definitely prefer Dr. Hatasaka to the other doctors there. I have seen others and felt more rushed and like a number than with Hatasaka. One frustration is that they would make me pay upfront and then my insurance would also pay so I ended up with a credit on my account...Ovulation induction. Femara in days 3-7. Gonal-F injections days 7, 9, 12. I had 2 mature follicles, but they were on the wrong side because my tube is damaged on that side. We will try again next month and hope to get follicles in the other side.

My husband and I spent several hours with Dr. Hatasaka over the years we spent with him and he always knew what was going on with us. He was kind, sensitive and very informative...I felt like he was very knowledgeable, would make adjustments to my treatments as needed, cared about me and made feel like I was an important patient. He always listened and always treated us with respect. He even called to talk to me after getting a false positive and made sure I was ok.
I didn’t have any problems with the [Reproductive Care Center] clinic. The financial expectations were clear and were always explained when we had an expectation. Scheduling appointments was simple. Each person my husband and I worked with was helpful and kind...We did a plan that have us 4 egg retrieval’s and if we didn’t get pregnant we would have gotten our money back. It seems like that cost just over $20,000

The first round of egg retrieval’s I ended up getting severe Hyperstimulation and appreciated so much that the second time we did the egg retrieval Dr. Hatasaka chose new drugs to make sure I didn’t have that experience again. I ended up having a mi h more successful second egg retrieval.

He [Dr. Harry Hatasaka] was really nice and communicated great answering questions and explaining treatment. In retrospect I don't feel that he anticipated problems I would have in my cycle that were easily correctable in subsequent cycles. The stim protocol he had me on was not ideal for my body and that contributed to the yield of live pregnancies I got per embryos produced (1/6). I was The one who had to be proactive about what protocol to change during frozen cycles to figure out how to get a pregnancy to stick.
Everything is in one spot [at RCC-Sandy] which is convenient and nice but also limits the ability to be flexible in timing. You have to fit your cycle into the doctors schedule which can be tricky and restrictive. The facility is nice and the staff is welcoming and and thorough with billing.... I don't remember protocol but I used a hcg triggereven though I was at high risk for hyperstimulation which would have warranted a lupron trigger. I was also never put on cabergaline after retrieval to prevent hyperstim as well. I ended up hyperstimulating and having to freeze all embryos unexpectedly.

Nicest doctor I have ever met. [Dr. Hatasaka] Takes as much time as we need. Allows for us to sk questions. He is wonderful about explaining everything in a way that is easy to understand and kind to the patient as he understand the struggle. ... Go in knowing that he is going to be honest but it will be in a way that shows he cares but that he also knows his stuff. The reason he is so highly regarded is willingness to help and be honest. The fact that he only takes one vacation a year shows his dedication.
Very Private and Clean. Staff [Reproductive Care Center] is always professional and caring in all matters. They especially go out of there way with delicate matters. The staff also communicates at such a high level. The only awkward thing is the waiting room. Everyone is looking at each other the whole time as they wait. ... Nurses are incredibly knowledgeable and answer questions even if we call. Caring patient and very understanding of the struggle people are going through. There is a big group that is always willing to help. The amount of detail that goes into the information and medication is wonderful.

He [Dr. Harry Hatasaka] spent time before my consultation to look at my medical history and understood why I was have having a hard time TTC before I ever met him. Dr Hatasaka’s bedside manner is one of the best I’ve ever had in all areas of medicine! He builds an immediate trust and raport with his patience, which for me has lasted nearly 10 years as his patient. ... He has always been up front and honest. He’s shared in my disappointments. He has thoroughly explained and adjusted. Although we have not had the results we’ve wanted and are now pursuing surrogacy, I’ve watched him develop the same with my surrogate, for which he should be commended.
Weakness - billing. Our second IVF we were told was covered by insurance... and then got the surprise $10,000 bill in the mail at the end of a disappointing cycle ... but I’ve never completely gotten over someone [RCC] not investigating billing correctly and telling us something was covered, when in fact it was not. ... Strength- support and organization. Lacey the egg donation coordinator has been very communicative and knowledgeable.

Dr. Hatasaka is the best. I waited a year before deciding on a doctor because I was so scared of getting a bad doctor. I'm very grateful for the recommendation I received to call him....After we did a lot of tests, he knew I had PCOS and started me on letrozole. I still didn't ovulate so he gave me a trigger shot after checking everything with a vaginal ultrasound. Next month, he added dexamethasone and doubled the letrozole. I finally ovulated. Tried this 3 more times and am revising our plan tomorrow.

He [Dr. Hatasaka] explained in detail the struggles my wife and I would have and shared examples of people who have succeeded. He never questioned who we were. But was also caring and supportive of the hard decisions he knew we had to make...He does lead With the negative and that was my one beef with our most recent consultation. Negative stuff came first and distracted us. Otherwise he is very caring and really takes His time to answer all questions.
[The nurses at Reproductive Care Center are] Intelligent, kind and very knowledgeable. Willing to adjust to schedules. Always showing compassion...Great staff and environment. Downfall is the location is hard to get to at times. Appointments are always on schedule and allow for questions to be discussed. I never felt like they were trying to rush me out for the next patient...He [Dr. Hatasaka] explained in detail the struggles my wife and I would have and shared examples of people who have succeeded.

After having bloodwork and ultra sounds, also surgery. He [Dr. Harry Hatasaka] wanted to do 3 more IUI’s. I felt like that was a good plan as far as the order for everything. Due to my age he is now wanting to skip the IUI’s and go straight to IVF...[eSET approach] He said multiple is not an option because insurance companies will not cover any complications with multiples so he won’t do it.
The nurses [of Reproductive Care Center] were always very kind and seemed to be compassionate...We have paid out the nose for so many tests and appointments so far. Just talking to him on the phone is over $100 and meeting with him was over $300. Between bloodwork, ultrasounds, and surgery we are already almost $10k out of pocket. Luckily our insurance covered $16,000 of the $20,000 surgery. Insurance didn’t help with any other infertility cost which we knew they wouldn’t.
How was your experience with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
He is a very kind man and in my eyes very honest. Almost to the point he has discouraged me because of my age. My husband gets the feeling he has dragged out treatment for more money but I would like to think he isn’t like that.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
I feel like he is good at what he does and a lot of people recommended him to me, that’s why I chose him. If you’re over 35 maybe consider someone else.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Harry Hatasaka at Reproductive Care Center (Boston IVF Network Clinic)?
I have been to appointments with him about 6-8 times and he often forgets where we are in the process. I have talked to his nurse almost as much as him.

The first time going to that office over a year ago I sat in the waiting room for over an hour. The front desk girls were so busy talking they forgot I was there. The second time they were rude about me seeing the doc until I paid my bill but I hadn’t even received a bill yet.

We tried clomid first to try to get me to ovulate one my own. I ovulated but the side effects were difficult, so we switched to femara. It made me ovulate but no luck. So we moved to injectable a in the hope of doing an ovulation induction or a IVF conversion depending on the results.
