Just be prepared for straight to the point discussion of your treatment, next steps, etc. This doesn't mean rushed or no time for questions, but she is very straightforward...We are going down what I would consider a very nontraditional route to build our family, but with Dr. Kim's experience and expertise, she made me feel like this is a very normal procedure that many people do. We had a devastating diagnosis, yet she didn't harp on that and just focused on the future...
The [Northwestern Fertility] nursing staff has been wonderful. Everyone has been so friendly and great to work with. I especially appreciate their quick response on the internal messaging system...I've never felt stressed about booking my appointments and am so happy with the flexibility and availability with scheduling. I've also never experienced a long wait or delay for one of my appointments or procedures, which I appreciate given my work schedule
How was your experience with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim has been great to work with thus far. We are still undergoing treatment, so I don't have an ending yet, but in terms of our experience up to this point, we are satisfied with our treatment. She definitely gets straight to the point (which some people may not like), but for me, and especially in our specific situation, I really appreciated that. We are going down what I would consider a very nontraditional route to build our family, but with Dr. Kim's experience and expertise, she made me feel like this is a very normal procedure that many people do. We had a devastating diagnosis, yet she didn't harp on that and just focused on the future. I'm excited to see how the rest of the treatments pan out.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Just be prepared for straight to the point discussion of your treatment, next steps, etc. This doesn't mean rushed or no time for questions, but she is very straightforward.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Northwestern certainly treats a lot of patients, and they do so efficiently. I didn't feel like "just a number" but I also understood the need to keep a consistent schedule to assist all patients in a timely manner. I've never felt rushed and my questions were always answered.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We are starting with medicated IUI for 3 cycles, then moving to IVF if we do not have success. This includes 50mg Clomid along with an Ovidrel shot. We are currently in our first IUI cycle, and expect to adjust as necessary depending on the results.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff has been wonderful. Everyone has been so friendly and great to work with. I especially appreciate their quick response on the internal messaging system - I always get quick replies whenever I have a question.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
This clinic does a wonderful job with scheduling. I've never felt stressed about booking my appointments and am so happy with the flexibility and availability with scheduling. I've also never experienced a long wait or delay for one of my appointments or procedures, which I appreciate given my work schedule. They certainly do service a lot of patients, so I've felt that the appointments move quickly, though that doesn't mean rushed. There is always time to ask questions where you want or need.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
It's difficult to answer this right now as we're still in the middle of treatment. We are also very fortunate to have our costs subsidized by insurance.

Dr. Kim would call me back when I had questions and show empathy for bad news...I felt like a thorough examination of my condition was not monitored early on and could have saved me a lot of resources and energy...I would like to have all information and make my own decision in regards to my treatment. There was another time I had to point out that my medication dosage was to be increased for the 2nd iui according to our treatment plan
NW is reputable and the clinic is very popular. Communication with easy with mychart. Virtual office visits were good. The attention to detail is lacking and treatment plans should be more thorough before a patient invests a lot of time and resources...I spent approximately $1900 for IUIs and medication (plus another HSG). Each IUI was $700 out of pocket and my medications were about $120. My monitoring procedures were covered by my insurance.
How was your experience with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim would call me back when I had questions and show empathy for bad news. However, I was upset that I completed two IUIs and was told that a cyst and fluid would be monitored. It wasn’t until my second IUI failed and I contacted her that she mentioned the cyst and fluid were still present. Because of the cyst and fluid, she was concerned my tubes were blocked and recommended I have another hsg completed. Previously, my obgyn said my tubes were open when I first took a hsg and I attempted to retrieve the images for Dr. Kim as she said she could not locate them. I completed another hsg and was diagnosed with Hydrosalpinges. I felt destroyed because I felt like a thorough examination of my condition was not monitored early on and could have saved me a lot of resources and energy. In addition, I felt like I had to review notes and ask questions in order to get my “plan”/“”case” reassessed. For example, I asked about being placed on birth control to try to prevent the cyst from growing further. Dr. Kim informed me that she did not tell me about this treatment as most clients want to try naturally when they take time off. I would like to have all information and make my own decision in regards to my treatment. There was another time I had to point out that my medication dosage was to be increased for the 2nd iui according to our treatment plan. I lost a lot of trust and confidence with Dr. Kim after these instances and the failure to get a hsg completed or request/retrieve the prior hsg images before having me complete any IUIs.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Make sure you review all notes and do your research beforehand. Do not be afraid to advocate for yourself and speak up.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
The people in the office were nice and would have conversations with me. Most of my interactions were with the nurses or other staff members.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
The plan was to do 3 IUIs, then IVF. After two failed IUIs, I messaged Dr. Kim and she decided to do further testing to determine why I continued to have a cyst and fluid in my ultrasounds. I had to redo an HSG as she could not locate the previous HSG that was completed at NW.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
They were nice but failed to consult after visit notes about dosage for my 2nd IUI cycle. Not sure if this was a missed part on behalf or the nurses or Dr. Kim.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Upon intake, there should have been a request for images of my hsg test before having me complete any IUIs. I should have been informed about the progress of the cyst and fluid.

[Dr. Helen Kim is] very willing to answer questions, so ask all the questions you have...Compassionate, knowledgeable, experienced. Able to assess situation and offer course of action, adapt it as needed, and offer recommended courses of action...since we were doing genetic testing and freezing [she] suggested eSET...We did multiple rounds of IVF. The dosages of the shots, and supplements were adjusted during various cycles
[Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine is] Very organized, well-run, clean, meticulous attention to detail. Have 1 location in downtown Chicago and 2 suburban locations in the north and northwest suburbs. Made life easier to have flexibility regarding locations for monitoring...nurses help you through the process with compassion and care...reception staff remember your name and chat with you when you arrive for your appointment...Through the use of Northwestern’s medical app they have a very short response time to all kinds of questions
How was your experience with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Compassionate, knowledgeable, experienced. Able to assess situation and offer course of action, adapt it as needed, and offer recommended courses of action. She was recommended by multiple friends from different circles, all of whom also happen to be in the medical field. Highly recommend Dr. Kim and her team.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
She’s very willing to answer questions, so ask all the questions you have. If you have exhausted your questions ask what else she thinks you should know.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim, her colleagues, nurses and staff have been wonderful. They go out of their way to be kind and compassionate while providing medical care. They tailor your care to your specific needs. They provide information and keep you up to date. Through the use of Northwestern’s medical app they have a very short response time to all kinds of questions.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Wish I could be more specific but it all blurs together. We did multiple rounds of IVF. The dosages of the shots, and supplements were adjusted during various cycles. We also did genetic testing. We’re still in the process but so far highly recommend them.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Jessica )
As I said earlier, amazing, compassionate, caring kind. It’s the little things along the way that make a difference, like how delicate the needle pokes are for your blood test, or how gentle the ultrasound technician is during your test, the way nurses help you through the process with compassion and care, or how the reception staff remember your name and chat with you when you arrive for your appointment. We could not have chosen a better team. Thank you all!
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Very organized, well-run, clean, meticulous attention to detail. Have 1 location in downtown Chicago and 2 suburban locations in the north and northwest suburbs. Made life easier to have flexibility regarding locations for monitoring. Again, highly recommend.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
This will be case specific based on someone’s insurance coverage, so for this one contact the clinic and ask their finance counselors to check your insurance coverage and let you know your specifics.
Describe Helen Kim's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
This will be patient and situation specific, but in our situation, especially since we were doing genetic testing and freezing Dr. Kim suggested eSET.

I've met with Dr. Kim (only 3 times, I mostly deal with her nurses), she's had to refresh her memory on my case in front of me. I know she sees a lot of people, but it would be nice if she did that before coming in the room to see me. ... Dr. Kim is very no nonsense. She's doesn't come off as the most compassionate person, but she knows her stuff. She's very black and white. I appreciate it because I don't need someone to sugar coat things, but other people may not appreciate her abrupt style.
As someone with an office job, I appreciated the early monitoring hours for ultrasounds and blood work. And they [Northwestern Medicine] really get you in and out as quickly as possible. ... The receptionists are always really friendly. ... They are very upfront on all the costs when you meet with the financial consultant. ... The nurses are GREAT!

She's going to tell you like it is, whether you want to hear it or not.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Northwestern in general sees a lot of patients, so it feel like a lot of the time you're one of many. But each time I've met with Dr. Kim (only 3 times, I mostly deal with her nurses), she's had to refresh her memory on my case in front of me. I know she sees a lot of people, but it would be nice if she did that before coming in the room to see me.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I've done 2 IUIs with Dr. Kim. Both were 100 mg of Clomid with monitoring and Ovidrel trigger shot. My insurance doesn't cover fertility treatment, and since I'm older, with unexplained fertility, she advised 2 IUIs before moving on to IVF. I've only had the consult for IVF with her to date.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
The nurses are GREAT! They are the ones you communicate with the most, so they are really responsive and easy to talk to and very understanding.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Northwestern sees a lot of patients. A lot of people will mention the "cattle call" feel of it. I didn't feel that way. As someone with an office job, I appreciated the early monitoring hours for ultrasounds and blood work. And they really get you in and out as quickly as possible. The waits aren't long at all, even on the weekends. And that they do that 7 days a week. The receptionists are always really friendly. The clinic itself is good.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
My insurance doesn't cover anything, so it's all out of pocket. They will bill insurance, but most is not covered. IUIs are $700. The self-pay for IVF is $10,000, which doesn't include meds and PGS testing. They are very upfront on all the costs when you meet with the financial consultant.
Describe Helen Kim's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
In my consult, she's told me about multiple transfer vs. single and has told me the risks and the odds, based on my age.
What specific things went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
I self-pay and no one told me that I had to pay for the IUI up front. It's not an insignificant amount of money and to be told that as you're getting ready for the procedure was jarring. I wish they would be more upfront with those kinds of things. I also had lost paperwork on one monitoring ultrasound and ended up waiting a lot longer than normal. But once I spoke up, I was taken right back and told if it ever happens again in the future, to speak up sooner.

I felt like she listened to me, and cared about trying to help us get pregnant. I personally appreciate a scientific approach, which she is how she speaks.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Make sure you have thought through your fertility journey ahead of time because she will ask you a lot of questions (i.e. timing, OPKs, tests you've had, history, etc). View Dr. Kim as a problem solver who will analyze your journey and try to help you with next steps.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim's consultation with myself and my husband was very thorough and rooted in facts, which I appreciate. She has a kind manner, but is very straightforward about the science behind fertility. I have only tried one cycle of IUI with Dr. Kim, and the only time I've seen her was at my consultation. I understand that this is how Northwestern's clinic works, but it does make the overall experience less personal.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
My husband and I had a complete fertility work-up (HSG, bloodwork, ultrasound, SA, etc) and were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Dr. Kim recommended a few cycles of medicated IUI. She said it could help with some problem they haven't been able to identify. She let us know it had about a 9% success rate per cycle, but on our own we likely only had 3% chance per cycle. I took Clomid (50 mg) for 5 days with monitoring. When I had a follicle large enough (mine was 23 mm) I took an HCG trigger shot, and did an IUI 36 hours later. My husband produced a sample of 11 million post-wash, which is considered great. Unfortunately, my IUI was unsuccessful.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff is all very nice and were quick to answer any questions I had via the online portal. A nurse performed the IUI. She was very thorough in making sure I checked over the info on the sample and explained my husband's pre- and post-wash numbers to us. She was very kind and explained every step of the process as she was doing it.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
My insurance covers fertility treatments. I had already met my deductible going through my fertility testing. For the IUI I paid approximately $40, labs about $30, Clomid was $10, HCG shot (generic) was $30.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Kim was honest and candid about our options. She explained the results of our infertility evaluation in detail. When IUI did not work and we decided to go forward with IVF, she spent a large amount of time answering all our questions and reviewing the steps, risks in detail. ... The only thing that made me unsettled (and perhaps this is a reflection of my current stress/anxiety as we are still undergoing fertility treatment) is that I felt that we should have discussed IVF as a more serious option earlier when I had a better chance of success (I.e. was younger). Even though it was a span of a year, I felt that my chances of fertility success declined over that period based on my repeat testing/evaluations and that doing IUI first was a waste of time.
Some of the US techs [At Northwestern Medicine] are more detail-oriented than others. Monitoring hours are early in AM which is helpful. There is still quite a wait for getting procedures done even if you show up on time--my IUIs typically went an actual 2 hours later than the set appointment time (even if you take into account the 45 minute sperm processing time).

Don't be afraid to voice your concerns and opinions up front.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim candidly talked me through options, even when those changed given my results from various treatments. She looked through my testing and explained the various options in detail.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For my IUIs, we used 100 mg of Clomid for 5 days, triggered with Ovidrel. I did produce 2 follicles each time. For my first IVF cycle, we started with Follistim at 300 mg and Menopur at 75 units for 3 days which is the standard start IVF regimen for the clinic from what I understand. I was then increased to Menopur 150 units along with the same dose of Follistim for 5 days. Despite the increase, my cycle ended up getting converted to IUI because of poor response (only 2 follicles).
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Excellent nurses all around. Responsive to messages, detailed, helpful. Some had more difficulty with my IUI than others, but they sought out help.

I have fertility benefits which covered my IUIs and medications thus far. I do have a copay for labs, US, office visits which have equaled out to about $500-$800 thus far.
Describe Helen Kim's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
We have yet to make it to transfer. But our plan is for PGS testing and transfer of 1 embryo.

She [Dr. Helen Kim] was always willing to collaborate on action plan when I needed more information. She was willing to consult with other doctors, and was supportive of myself and my husband... was thorough and kind. She explored all avenues regarding why I might not be getting pregnant, but always kept us moving forward. I felt informed and was a participant in my care. She called me back on the same day whenever I called with a question.
Monitoring [at University of Chicago Hospitals] was first come first serve. The longest I ever waited was 30 minutes but that was rare. I generally waited less than 15...I did PGS testing and frozen transfers and therefore she [Dr. Kim] only wanted to implant one embyro which I was fine with...Their strength is that as a small practice they can give wonderful personalized care. It can be hard to get an initial appointment but once you are working with them they are extremely helpful with scheduling.
How was your experience with Helen Kim at University of Chicago Medicine?
Dr. Kim was thorough and kind. She explored all avenues regarding why I might not be getting pregnant, but always kept us moving forward. I felt informed and was a participant in my care. She called me back on the same day whenever I called with a question. She was always willing to collaborate on action plan when I needed more information. She was willing to consult with other doctors, and was supportive of myself and my husband.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at University of Chicago Medicine?
It may take awhile to get in because they are a small practice, but it's worth the wait. Remember, one month is only one missed cycle. You will be glad you chose them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at University of Chicago Medicine?
The people who work in the UCM fertility office are the kindest, most caring group of health professionals. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking treatment in Chicago.
Describe the protocols Helen Kim used in your cycles at University of Chicago Medicine and their degree of success.
She is analytical and conservative. She looks at all the data before coming up with a plan. She does not take a one size fits all approach.
Describe your experience with your nurse at University of Chicago Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Gayle)
The team overall is extremely compassionate and responsive. I could always count on a prompt reply to a telephone or MyChart inquiry.

We've met with Dr. Kim twice in the very short time we have been seeing her. When we first met with her she spent almost two hours reviewing all of our results. She is very investigative as my husband's described. We have been given no real reasons for our infertility or two miscarriages and she seems like she is willing to do the work to find out why and to get us pregnant...I don't get the feeling she will sugar coat bad news so if you want the information in a very straightforward way then you will get it. If not, be ready for it...
You see the same people every time (for blood and ultrasound) [at U Chicago -MD Ave]. Dr. Kim has also performed the IUI (when it was a holiday weekend)...Results are provided electronically via MyChart. I've spoken to the nurse when I had questions about the results and she was somewhat helpful...
How was your experience with Helen Kim at University of Chicago Medicine?
Dr. Kim is willing to sit down with you and have a conversation and review all past results and clearly explain your options. So far, we really like her.

Since Letrazole plus IUI did get my pregnant previously with our first doctor and there was no reason discovered for my miscarriage she thought starting with that again made sense before graduating to IVF. First cycle, we moved forward with Letrazole plus IUI. We did not get pregnant. Second cycle, we did Letrazole plus an IUI. My lining was questionable so we also added Estrace before the IUI. Mid cycle now.

She was very informative, my partner and I had questions and she answered them all with no issues. Overall it was pleasant and she helped to make us feel optimistic. We had travel plans and Dr. Kim also suggested potential risks and how to stay safe due to our attempt at conception ... I recall starting with at home insemination and then moving to medication and in-office iui after a suggested 3 cycles
They [UCH] are very good at compassion and setting a nice environment during a stressful time. No weaknesses. I wish that a baby resulted from working with them but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. No fault of the clinic. We will try again after this year and will be moving so it is a bit un nerving to have to start the process again without their support.

Dr Kim was nice but felt she didn’t take the time to get to know us on a personal level. ... Dr Kim knows seems to know her stuff. ... She powered through results, never stopping to ask what we thought or felt comfortable with. She pushed IVF and wanted to get treatment started right after the consultation. It felt somewhat pushy and sales-like during a really hard time ... She did not show compassion and getting to know us as a couple and what treatment plans we felt comfortable with ... Dr Kim came in and powered through the consultation. It felt very scientific, blunt, and impersonal ...
Nice clinic [Northwestern Medicine] but will continue to research others in the area. Seemed more like a business where they pushed IVF heavily. Initial consultation appointment was very expensive. We decided not to go back as it didn’t feel like the right fit ... [nursing staff] Nice and compassionate ... Very expensive. We were shocked by the consultation fee when we have excellent insurance

I do feel that Dr. Kim and her staff cared about the outcome of my treatment but not that they were prepared to treat me individually or look beyond the standard reasons for what might be going on. After two miscarriages, they basically told me there wasn't anything else they could do for me and I should consult another doctor.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and competent, but sometimes it didn't feel like she listened to why we were pursuing these specific fertility services. She seems less versed in LGBTQ+ care and somewhat unwilling to understand the ways in which gender identity may influence a person's decision to be pregnant or not...We are doing reciprocal IVF, meaning my spouse was going to have her eggs retrieved to freeze embryos that would then be transferred to me
Northwestern is a high-volume practice, so be prepared to keep track of what should be happening and when—you are ultimately responsible for your care. It's very much like an assembly line, and despite bragging about their LGBTQ+ bona fides, the forms are heteronormative and no effort has been made to make them more inclusive.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
If it's important to you, be confident in how you'd like to approach things. Dr. Kim won't lead you astray, but you may need to advocate for yourself a bit.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and has excellent credentials. However, at times it felt like she was unwilling to acknowledge our specific situation. We are doing reciprocal IVF, meaning my spouse was going to have her eggs retrieved to freeze embryos that would then be transferred to me. My spouse has low ovarian reserve, and several times Dr. Kim suggested that my spouse simply get pregnant because the likelihood of my spouse being able to get and stay pregnant was likely better than the likelihood of retrieving enough eggs for fertilization. My spouse has no interest in being pregnant. If it had come up only once, I don't think I would have been as bothered by it, but it came up several times. The practice itself is a high volume practice, and there were several occasions where labs or diagnostics weren't ordered accurately or at all, leading to delays in care.

Describe Helen Kim's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
No strong preference, but it ended up not being relevant to us because we had only one embryo to freeze.
What specific things went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to order appropriate test
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
They failed to order appropriate tests and call in the medication at one point. It didn't impact the outcome, but it added to an already stressful situation and degraded our faith in the medical team.
