With and AMH of 0.2ng/mL at age 35 we had little to no hope to ever become parents. Dr. Tur-Kaspa patiently explained us the process, patiently answered all of our questions and set realistic expectations...Our protocols have been changed/ adjusted with every cycle depending on my body’s response...Outcome? 5 beautiful, healthy genetically tested embryos!
The clinic [at Institute for Human Reproduction] is conveniently located in the city, with plenty of parking spaces on the street. They are easy to reach and have been very accommodating with my monitoring times whenever a time change was needed due to my work schedule...[nursing staff are] Kind, patient and very accommodating...the IHR team always responded to any questions in a timely fashion via portal.
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
His compassionate, caring and loving demeanor gave us strength to move forward, he gave us hope and provided us with all the resources needed during this challenging time. He was with us every step of the way! The nurse in me seriously started to consider the prospect using an egg donor, reality is that my numbers were really low to begin with, and to add to the problem I was now a poor responder. Dr. Tur-Kaspa believed in me and I believed in his knowledge and extensive experience. Outcome? 5 beautiful, healthy genetically tested embryos!

What Dr. Tur-Kaspa has done for us is nothing short of a miracle. With and AMH of 0.2ng/mL at age 35 we had little to no hope to ever become parents. Dr. Tur-Kaspa patiently explained us the process, patiently answered all of our questions and set realistic expectations. But most importantly he gave us a chance. Dr. Tur-Kaspa is well known as one of the best Dr’s in the field and it shows. His compassionate, caring and loving demeanor gave us strength to move forward. He was with us every step of the way, and there are not enough words to express our deep appreciation and gratitude we feel for him and his team!

Dr. TK was incredibly patient with explaining the process and our options. The entire process is so stressful and very emotional and I found that he was warm and empathetic when my mental state required it. He was also very honest with me and treated us with respect. ... I immediately felt as though Dr. TK was invested in spending the time with my partner and I to understand our options. I do wish I had more face time with him, I did not see him between my consult and my retrieval.
The clinic [IHR] is small and very convenient. ... My advice would be to keep excellent records of all of the paperwork and documentation. You need to be an advocate for yourself, for example when getting blood work, confirm that day the list of things being tested with the staff. Also, confirm before appointments that all records have been received and added to your file. This goes for your partner as well.

For my treatment, I was prescribed Gonal F, Menopur and Ganirelix. Although the Dr. only predicted we would have 5/6 eggs we ended up with 11 at retrieval. We only had 1 embryo that went for genetic testing (which was normal!) so overall it was a win.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Patients are not assigned an individual coordinator so you are interfacing with several people over the course of stimulation which can make you feel a bit like a number but overall they were timely with the info I needed.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
My previous blood work results were not updated even when I had sent them over 3 times. Also, once I went in for blood work and had I not mentioned that I needed my AMH tested they would not have done it. This happened even though I was with the Dr. when he told the receptionist that I needed to be tested for an updated AMH reading. They also lost my partner's paperwork and he had to fill everything out again by hand the day of our consult.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Tur-Kaspa was the first and only doctor to point blank ask me how many children I want. It was his first question. And that alone made me have faith in him. He was honest and didn’t sugar coat anything. He made me know that it was going to be an uphill battle but he believed in me and believed I will get a child. He gave me courage and confidence. He also, took the time to talk with me as a person and get to know me and my personality.
This is a small clinic [Institute for Human Reproduction]. If you are looking for more personal attention, this is your place. It was very easy to make an initial consultation and the doctors are always available. The only downfall is there are no weekend hours. ... This [monitoring appointments] is a well oiled machine. The 2 ultrasound techs get you in and out. There is rarely a wait. ...The compassion these women [nurses] have shown me is by far the best I have experienced. The communication and thoroughness is unbelievable.

Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
I just finished my first egg retrieval today and am awaiting results. I am prepared to do 4 back to back retrieval’s as I have DOR. I only retrieved 3 eggs today on the following proptocol: 2.9 HGH daily 10 units lupron in the a.m. and p.m. 150 Menopur 450 Gonal-F So as you can see, I am on a very strong dosage with very little response. Hence, why we need to do as many cycles as my insurance will cover in the annual year. We also are doing PGS testing as I had a miscarriage previously that had trisomy 16.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Wow is all I can say. Maria for instance is the most kind nurse I have ever encountered. The compassion these women have shown me is by far the best I have experienced. The communication and thoroughness is unbelievable.

This is a well oiled machine. The 2 ultrasound techs get you in and out. There is rarely a wait. And Theresa is my sounding board. She is compassionate and gives me positive reinforcement. She sat with me and listened and sympathized while I cried over my poor response. You are not just a number here. They genuinely care.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Well my insurance is a BCBS marketplace plan as my employer does not offer IVF benefits so my plan is expensive. It is a $7,900 pie of pocket max I easily hit with the medication alone. Also, each cycle I opted for PGS which was $5,700 per cycle and HGH which was $2,100 per cycle. Remember as mentioned earlier I am doing 4 retrieval’s. So it is extremely expensive.

He [Dr. Tur-Kaspa] adjusted my protocol several times to maximize the number of embryos we got. He worked within the limits of my insurance -- even canceling one cycle early when he thought we would get better results with a different protocol (in order not to "use up" one of my 4 egg retrievals allowed by insurance). He is not only sensitive to the emotional turmoil of this journey, but also the financial stress. His office worked with my insurance company to get as much covered as possible, and when I had to pay for a procedure out-of-pocket they offered me a highly discounted rate --
window of time for monitoring appointments [at IHR] was pretty convenient. Several days a week, for several hours in the morning...the nurses and ultrasounds techs and lab techs all knew me by name and face and were so kind and helpful -- and often remembered details about my case! When I came in for bloodwork after getting my first positive pregnancy test the nurse at the check-in counter whispered "congratulations" -- she recognized me and knew exactly why I was there (despite there being many other women in the waiting room at all different stages of the process).
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
I found Dr. Tur-Kaspa after trying two other clinics on the east coast. What a different experience, on so many levels. Most importantly, Dr. Tur-Kaspa is very, very good at this. He is simply an excellent clinician and has success where others have failed. He adjusted my protocol several times to maximize the number of embryos we got. He worked within the limits of my insurance -- even canceling one cycle early when he thought we would get better results with a different protocol (in order not to "use up" one of my 4 egg retrievals allowed by insurance). He is not only sensitive to the emotional turmoil of this journey, but also the financial stress. His office worked with my insurance company to get as much covered as possible, and when I had to pay for a procedure out-of-pocket they offered me a highly discounted rate -- very similar to the contracted rate that insurance actually pays (much less than the "sticker price"). Dr. Tur-Kaspa is the only doctor in this field that I know of who offers a lottery every year for FREE IVF! This doctor is truly on a mission to help people. With his phenomenal track record and multitude of awards, it was amazing to see how much humility he has and how accommodating he was. For example, I really wanted to try a natural cycle for implantation -- which means that I was not "in sync" with the majority of his patients (default standard of care is a medicated cycle, allowing doctors to "batch" their patients) and he was fine with that, even though it meant a more inconvenient and unpredictable schedule for himself (e.g., coming to surgery center one day special for me, etc.). I've been to other clinics where there was a my-way-or-the-highway attitude (y'know, "this is how we do things here") - and Dr. Tur-Kaspa was the exact opposite. Being a fertility patient, you're very vulnerable, and having the doctor respect your individual preferences is really empowering. The other thing I remember from various appointments with him was that he made me smile and laugh. He has a good sense of humor which can lighten the mood and imbue everything with optimism. I distinctly remember a couple of his one liners from right before egg retrieval surgery and I'm chuckling as I type this (not gonna give them away online!). I recently met with Dr. Tur-Kaspa again to discuss my next embryo implantation. I brought my 8 month old daughter with me to the appointment. He was so happy to meet her that he literally carried her out of his office to show her off to his staff! This is truly a man on a mission to make couples happy.
Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
I needed relatively high doses of Follistim and Menapur, and low dose Lupron throughout.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
One more thing that stands out about my experience at IHR is the office staff. My experience at the other practices I tried was very . . . impersonal. Sort of "pick a number, take a seat". At IHR, the nurses and ultrasounds techs and lab techs all knew me by name and face and were so kind and helpful -- and often remembered details about my case! When I came in for bloodwork after getting my first positive pregnancy test the nurse at the check-in counter whispered "congratulations" -- she recognized me and knew exactly why I was there (despite there being many other women in the waiting room at all different stages of the process). One time I forgot to pick up something I needed for the weekend at a Friday appointment and one of the nurses arranged with me to pick it up from her doorman on Sat night! I just felt like everyone there was really rooting for me :)

Dr. T[ur-Kaspa] found a tubal blockage and PCOS issue that my first clinic failed to identify. He has great bedside manner, when he had to give me bad news he didn't shy away from telling me but did so in a gentle and kind way. He helped me get a grant to cover some of the cost of IVF. He hugged me the day I graduated, he is that kind of doctor...Because I was PCOS, he used Metformin. I was on Gonal F, Menopur, esterace, Lupron, and progesterone.
Monitoring appointments [at Institute for Human Reproduction] were so great for me, I went before work and usually was there at 7, only a few people there, first come first seen, I was never there more than 15-30 minutes...IVF was around 10-11k, plus 1k for freezing, and medications. PGS testing would be additional 4k plus FET round of 3K...long waits for consultation/reconsultation, but it's because he takes the time with each patient and this was the only times I experienced this, all other labs/ultrasounds/ect were timely

Melissa I talked to frequently with my cycle. She would always respond to me by the end of the same day, we often talked via email which is convenient. She always got paperwork back to me quickly. When I called after my stillborn, she remembered me and was so sorry to hear, like an old friend giving me comfort.

It was clear he wasn’t just following a protocol but tweaking my medications and schedule as my body needed. ... Dr. Tur-Kaspa takes the time to be sure I felt well cared for. He took the time to explain everything. He was honest and blunt but also so kind. He called to be sure I was ok more than once. He took the time to be sure both my husband and I felt comfortable with every aspect of our care.
Monitoring is a first come first served basis. It can get quite hectic but staff works quickly. My longest wait was 45 min ... Compassion is their strength! They are a busy group but each person seems to remember your name or at least your face. I never heard arguments or discontent from staff. They are efficient with their time and try to accommodate strange work schedules. ... Melissa [nurse] took the time to answer my countless questions.
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Dr. Tur-Kaspa seems to work hard to build a personal relationship with each of his patients. He is an amazing listener. Jen is efficient with his time but never makes his patient feel rushed. He is always encouraging and always smiling. He returned messages in a timely manner. He is beyond knowledgeable on his field. It was clear he wasn’t just following a protocol but tweaking my medications and schedule as my body needed.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Don’t hesitate... get a consult with him.

Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
Initially he started me on a “typical” protocol for IVF, our first round ultimately failed as none of my embryos survived past day 3. He was not flustered. He took the time to meet with my husband and I. He claearly had done more research into my problems with poor egg quality. He gave us a few options that were more unconventional (I.e. delaying retrieval by a day and adding HGH to our regimen). The next 2 rounds were trying but much more successful. We had 4 embryos that are PGS tested and we were happy!!! I truly feel that without his changes we would have been wasting time and money with canceled cycles and disappointment.

Melissa took the time to answer my countless questions. She was kind and never frustrated with my need for complete understanding of our path.

Compassion is their strength! They are a busy group but each person seems to remember your name or at least your face. I never heard arguments or discontent from staff. They are efficient with their time and try to accommodate strange work schedules. When you go through this infertility path you start to feel not in control they take the time to be sure you understand why they do certain things. The only negative is that sometimes it gets busy waiting in the morning for labs and ultrasound. It is a first come first serve basis. That can be frustrating for those trying to get to work. The longest I wanted was 45 minutes for labs. Staff does arrive early and usually begins work before the stated time a huge plus!!

Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Thank GOD insurance covered our treatment. However PGS testing and storage was out of pocket. We spent about $18000 out of pocket but that also included elective acupuncture off-site.
Describe Ilan Tur-Kaspa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
For me... Dr TK only wanted to transfer 1 embryo at a time because I am already high risk. He didn’t see a reason to electively increase my perinatal risk. I agreed whole heartedly.

I like the doctor [Dr. Ilan Tur-Kaspa] a lot, he’s honest and open and candid about his method of treatments. His accent is a bit hard to understand sometimes but I was ok with that. He was compassionate and understanding in several situations. He called personally many times when I felt upset or frustrated with the nurses...We did 3 egg retrievals and never changed protocol because I responded well each time during stims. He has suggested several things that weren’t originally discovered - genetics test, HSN, removal of a large polyp. He does more testing to prevent heartache and I appreciate his thoughral approach.
It’s a small, boutique office [IHR - Chicago] and everyone knew me by name, including the other doctor who treated me several times. Friendly staff...They completely disregarded how taking steroids could significantly impact my glucose levels and didn’t make me aware what I’m taking which resulted in very high (almost 300) blood glucose levels, a mild panic attack and adjustment in an insulin regiment to get those levels down prior to transfer - which resulted in a chemical...We didn’t originally start on a good note and I had to switch nurses but then went back to the original nurse after things settled down. Their worst human is their financial lady, she’s not nice at all. I like their phlebotomist a lot, very patient and kind.

They need to be more organized. It’s fristrating when you’re being asked “what are we doing today”... open my file and read why I’m here. It’s upsetting when there is a major medical issue and it’s in my chart but overlooked almost at every ultrasound and I have to remind them. It’s frustrating when their front end staff doesn’t pick up calls and let it go to vm. Their waiting room needs captions on TV. They need to offer wipes in the bathroom for better after consult/US cleanup.

Expensive! We spent $48K (30 insurance paid but we maxed it) and that’s NOT including meds. Absolutely ridiculous, Especially the PGS part with freezing and biopsy was $5790! $3500 transfer, $1,000 - ERA test.

He [Dr. Tur-Kaspa] has always showed compassion in my case but is mostly straight to the point kind of doctor. He did advise against transferring 2 embryos but of course it was my decision & he respected that. He did try to talk me out of it at one point. In the beginning when I was new to infertility & IVF I would have preferred him to explain the process a little bit more.
The lab [at IHR-Chicago] is always upbeat & friendly even though it is so early in the morning. I like how they operate. The front desk staff is ok, they could be friendlier in my opinion, although i have to say Vicki, who has been there since I have started going there is very friendly & personable. The ultrasound tech priya I wanna say her name is, I hope, is very friendly & knows what she is doing. Marissa could use some customer service skills & is never friendly when I go in. It seems like she hates her job. The office space is really nice & updated compared to the old office on the north side. I do dislike that there is no patient parking lot though. I also don't like that surgeries are done offsite downtown. It would be more easy & conveinient if everything could be done in the same office in my opinion.
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Dr Tur-Kaspa is a nice doctor, he knows what he's doing for sure because he helped me to conceive my twin boys. He has always showed compassion in my case but is mostly straight to the point kind of doctor. He did advise against transferring 2 embryos but of course it was my decision & he respected that. He did try to talk me out of it at one point. In the beginning when I was new to infertility & IVF I would have preferred him to explain the process a little bit more. Going in not knowing if you are ever going to conceive you just kind of go with the flow & trust the doctor. If I had known what I know now I would have skipped IUI & went straight to IVF after 1 failed attempt. As a patient I am pretty satisfied & have decided to go back to him for further treatment because I am comfortable & trust him as my doctor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Do your research & have your questions ready to ask. It is so overwhelming to go to a fertility doctor & there is a lot of information that will be given to you. I wish that I had done more research & asked more questions at first after being diagnosed.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
At times I felt like a number when the nurses would call with results. Sometimes it seemed like they just read from a script. Also there is a ultrasound tech there that is not very friendly who I dread getting when I am there. Most of the times I feel good and like a human though.
Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
I don't remember the protocols because they were done in 2013 but I do have a timeline for my next IVF cycle which includes labs & ultrasound at day 3 & then birth control & metformin for 2 to 3 weeks, hsn & if all goes well I will start IVF injections.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
In 2013 there was a nurse coordinator that I dealt with was named Vernita. She was an ok nurse but sometimes would not get back to me in a timely manner. In 2018 when I went back she is no longer there & there are a few new nurses that I have dealt with. It is never just one nurse & I feel that it is not so personable right now. I am sure they all can read the notes & access the same records but I feel that sometimes without having one nurse with you the whole time it is not ideal. I have never even met any of the nurses in person despite asking to meet one at one of my visits.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
I love the monitoring hours there. It is very convenient in my opinion because you can go anytime between 6 and 9 or 9:30am especially if you work you can get it done before work usually. It is pretty well run & in an organized matter. The visits usually are no longer then 10-15 minutes which I like. The lab department loves their job, they are always friendly & upbeat so early in the morning.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
I have insurance so my costs were minimal in my opinion. I don't recall the specifics. I do want to add his office is pretty pricey to store your embryos compared to friends who have theirs stored at other facilities. I think that it should be a bit more affordable.
Describe Ilan Tur-Kaspa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Yes he strongly advised me against transferring 2 embryos at a time. He still suggests that I only transfer 1 embryo due to my young age.

The doctor's [Tur-Kaspa] behavior varied between incredibly passionate and completely detached...He traveled frequently without giving me a heads up, and at one point I had to ask to be put on an extra week of estrogen just to coordinate with his travel plans so he could do my transfer (which was cancelled anyway).... He can be incredibly compassionate and funny. I really liked him personally, but at the end I wasn't pregnant and I felt like he wasn't taking responsibility. He is also very aware of issues within his nursing staff, and he doesn't take active steps to make it better.
The only upside is that the morning waits were really quick and the U/S technicians and the women who drew blood -- were amazing. They were the only ones I felt who cared about me and knew my name...These nurses at IHR make a frustrating and heartbreaking fertility journey that much worse. They always got my meds wrong. Sometimes they got my protocol wrong. I had to find the errors and then follow up. And forget about getting someone on the phone. If you don't answer when they call, you'll never get to talk to them again.
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
The doctor certainly seemed very informed and on the ball. But as I look back on my notes, I feel a little misled about his live birth rate success. He convinced me if we did PGS testing that I would have a 60-70% chance of getting pregnant because I'm under 35. His SART data, though, does not show that high of a percentage at all. At one point he told me I should be pregnant by now. He doesn't know why I'm not. It's either really bad luck or a uterine issue and we don't have enough data yet. But then month after month he'd basically pump me up with estrogen and put me through hell with no change and no success. He traveled frequently without giving me a heads up, and at one point I had to ask to be put on an extra week of estrogen just to coordinate with his travel plans so he could do my transfer (which was cancelled anyway). Your body is expected to work around his schedule, and I wish I had known how big of a deal that would be when I chose the clinic. He can be incredibly compassionate and funny. I really liked him personally, but at the end I wasn't pregnant and I felt like he wasn't taking responsibility. He is also very aware of issues within his nursing staff, and he doesn't take active steps to make it better. When I started with him in 2016 we discussed his poor Yelp reviews, mostly based on the staff. He said the problems had been taken care of. Let me tell you -- they weren't.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Go somewhere else! But if you stay, take detailed notes and always confirm in writing, via email, what he told you. If you don't understand something because of his accent, ask until you do. If you feel like you are starting to dictate your treatment because he isn't coming up with a plan of action -- run. Do not rely on the nurses to give you correct information abut protocol or meds. Be your own advocate. You can't trust them to get it right.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
The doctor's behavior varied between incredibly passionate and completely detached. At times, I felt like we were on the same team, reaching for the same goal. But many other times I felt like he did not fully comprehend everything i was enduring as a patient. This was particularly difficult because he cancelled FETs for me time and time again because my lining failed to increase enough (and because he only does transfers on Thursdays, so forget about what your body wants). There was a disconnect between my experience and what he thought my experience was -- and this was despite me repeatedly telling him I was unhappy and felt unsupported. While he sometimes would call me personally, the last time I was cancelled the nurse called. It was devastating, and he didn't even bother to take the time to call me.
Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
He triggered me with Lupron and we had 7 frozen, tested embryos. I thought I'd never have to do IVF again. I was wrong. One implanted, but was a pregnancy of unknown origin and they had to give me two doses of methotrexate to get "unpregnant." Each month my lining wouldn't get above a 8, so he would cancel my frozen transfer. I got to transfer one more, but it didn't stick. To get my lining to thicken, he pumped me full of ungodly amounts of estrogen (my serum levels were 2200+). I suggested patches, so we tried those. They didn't work either. I often got to a 7, but not when I needed to be for the purpose of his Thursday-only transfer schedule. I was told my embryos were perfect, but after the 2nd didn't stick I consulted with other clinics. I'm not sure how good IHR's outsourced lab is. And there are studies that triggering with Lupron makes eggs that are not high quality. He only used vaginal progesterone. Everyone else I know uses PIO injections, or both. So he finally relented and said I too could do PIO. But we never got that far.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic). (Assigned nurse: Sue, Melissa, Nicole, Maria, Wendy)
I had four coordinators in the period of a single year. By the end, I couldn't even pick my nurse out of a crowd. I never saw her. I didn't feel like any of them cared about me, except for the first (Sue) who left the practice. There is crazy turnover at this clinic and the nurses that get left behind evidently have a huge workload. I am at a new clinic now and the experience is night and day better. These nurses at IHR make a frustrating and heartbreaking fertility journey that much worse. They always got my meds wrong. Sometimes they got my protocol wrong. I had to find the errors and then follow up. And forget about getting someone on the phone. If you don't answer when they call, you'll never get to talk to them again.
Describe your experience with Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
I chose this clinic because it was a nice size -- not as big as FCI and at the time the success rates were similar to Northwestern and FCI. But in retrospect, it's not worth it. I'd rather go to a huge clinic that was efficient. The only upside is that the morning waits were really quick and the U/S technicians and the women who drew blood -- were amazing. They were the only ones I felt who cared about me and knew my name.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).

Describe Ilan Tur-Kaspa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).

What specific things went wrong at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?

  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
The night before I was to start stims, I realized they never ordered needles for me. I had never done this before and didn't know to inventory everything. It was 10pm on a Saturday night and I was troubleshooting with the mail-in pharmacist, a 24-hours Walgreens -- and my clinic nurse was nowhere to be found. They often called in Rx that were confusing or written out so they couldn't be filled properly. When I switched to estrogen patches it was a nightmare because the doctor would increase me to 4 patches but I only had a Rx for 2, etc. During my first FET protocol I was told to take the wrong number of estradiol pills. It didn't negatively impact my cycle, but perhaps my lining would have been thicker -- we will never know. It was infuriating to have nurses who didn't fully "get it."

Dr. Tur-Kaspa always had a great attitude and sense of humor and treated me warmly. I could tell he was personally determined. During the few times you'll get to consult with him, he is patient and lets you take to your time, but you need to be prepared with questions. I also really got along with most of the staff and nurses as well...Dr. Tur-Kaspa performed a hysteroscopy, an egg retrieval, and a transfer. I never experience any discomfort or pain, not even after the hysteroscopy, which I thought was amazing. (I had another hysteroscopy earlier on, and that was performed by Dr. Cohen of IHR.) One egg retrieval plus PGS resulted in 9 embryos down from 16 (which is a really great number), and after just one transfer, I was pregnant. While the IUIs were very frustrating, I don't know if I can complain much now that I had such great IVF results.
My first nurse [at Institute for Human Reproduction], which I had most of the time i was there, was very difficult to talk to, it was difficult to get a hold of her to ask questions. I had to think of and ask a lot of questions. My second nurse that took over after the first nurse left IHR seemed much more professional and was easier to talk to....For the IUIs, I took one or two doses of clomid for five days, then ovidrel trigger after b/w and u/s monitoring, and a couple days after IUI, started progesterone support. Sometimes also included estrace/estradiol. For IVF, injections of menopur, follistim (adjusted as necessary based on ultrasounds), and then ganarellix, and finally, before the retrieval, leuprolide injection. In prep for the transfer, I was on estrace, progesterone, and medrol. Also, always lots of antibiotics. On estrace and progesterone until week 10. As far as I know, there was nothing particular about this protocol tailored to me as there weren't any special circumstances. This retrieval resulted in 34 eggs though I never had any symptoms at all; I felt perfectly normal the whole time, no discomfort whatsoever.

Do you as much as your own independent research as possible and ask a lot of questions so that you understand the process and timeline, whether IUI or IVF. For example, with my partner and my busy work/travel schedule, I had to understand the timelines very well to be able to plan or postpone certain treatment.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
My first nurse, which I had most of the time i was there, was very difficult to talk to, it was difficult to get a hold of her to ask questions. I had to think of and ask a lot of questions. My second nurse that took over after the first nurse left IHR seemed much more professional and was easier to talk to.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
The PGS testing (which was outsourced to a lab) was $4,500 for up to 8 embryos and $250 for each additional.
Describe Ilan Tur-Kaspa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Because we did PGS testing, it wasn't a question for him whether we would take the risk of multiple because doctor said he had a 70% success rate with single embryo transfers after PGS testing.

Dr Tur Kaspa is extermely direct. His directness took getting used to - but he cares and is invested. I might not always like what he says but he spends as much time with me as I need, is compassionate and doesn't give up...Don't let his directness turn you off. Underneath he is kind and compassionate and he will try his hardest to get you pregnant...Dr Tur Kaspa knows my name, my situation, my story - he has empathized with my situation, hugged me, given me kleenex to cry...
Monitoring is first come first seen. The clinic says it opens at 6:45, but patients begin arriving at 6am - be prepared to wait...Women begin showing up at 6am. The US tech is quick and efficient and begins taking patients early. From start to finish, I am usually there 1 hr...The nursing staff is fine. Some are friendly and helpful, while others seem exhausted and annoyed. That said, I have had medication delivered to IHR when I couldn't receive it myself - and they unpacked it and refrigerated it for me. They have loaned me meds when mine didn't arrive on time...

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Dr Tur Kaspa knows my name, my situation, my story - he has empathized with my situation, hugged me, given me kleenex to cry. His partner, Dr Cohen performed my second egg retrieval, and I was so nervous when he popped in to introduce himself. His response, "I know all about you, your story, your history. Dr Tur Kaspa spent a long time speaking to me about your case, making sure I knew who you are. You are special. You are in good hands." I cried. I felt in good hands.
Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.

EPP, MD Lupron 10iu/2x daily, omnitrope 1/2 vial daily (2 days), add in, menopur 150 am, gonal f 450 pm (continue with MD Lupron and omnitrope) tried lupron cycle when my follicles didn't respond one cycle

The nursing staff is fine. Some are friendly and helpful, while others seem exhausted and annoyed. That said, I have had medication delivered to IHR when I couldn't receive it myself - and they unpacked it and refrigerated it for me. They have loaned me meds when mine didn't arrive on time. And once, I went to my coordinator's condo complex to pick up a box of meds after hours. Now that's care that doesn't happen at larger clinics.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
My OOP cycle was $10,500 plus meds. Embryo biopsy and freeze cost approximately $3000. I was charged a batching fee of $500 per cycle, which I did not like - why does it matter how many cycles I am doing? I tried to argue this charge and lost. Genetic testing is $4750 which is the highest of any clinic I have been to - which was disappointing to learn. Most of my cycles have been covered by insurance thankfully. For insurance covered cycles, I paid deductibles for meds, I paid cost of meds not covered by insurance, the batching cost, embryo biopsies and freezing and genetic testing (one test for all batched embryos).

we put together a plan [with Dr. Tur-Kaspa] and I started on the medications for IVF and egg retrieval. Almost immediately he left the county for a couple weeks which meant he himself would not do my retrieval or my transfer and that I was handed off to the other office doctor. At our follow up appointment after our transfer failed, he reiterated that I was overweight and that was a huge problem which made me wonder if he should not have suggested we wait until I was able to lose an X amount of weight before we tried.
They [nurses at Institute for Human Reproduction] have seen it all and it was clear in the way that they were able to communicate and empathize. They always had an answer for me and were fairly quick responding to my emails. The only complaint I had here is that I was given some free samples of some of my medication (definitely NOT the complaint) but they were not marked in my file so when it came time to buy my medication I ended up buying way more than I needed.
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
On Dr. Tur-Kaspa himself, he was very kind and professional. He told my husband and me all about our odds and what our procedures might look like. At our initial consultation he mentioned that I was overweight and that I would have a better chance of getting pregnant if I lost weight (this was not a problem but in retrospect I felt he did not stress this enough and that I was given no tips based on any of my test results). We decided to wait a cycle before getting into medications due to a uterine polyp removal. After the cycle wait, we put together a plan and I started on the medications for IVF and egg retrieval. I also had to ask him if he knew what might be causing our infertility and he told me that I had PCOS and poor egg quality in a very conversational way that sounded like I should have known that. After we had time to recover from the emotions of a failed IVF transfer and had time to really think about our whole process, I feel like I was just a number being pushed through the system instead of an actual patient that needed personalized care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Make sure that you ask him about his potential travel plans so that you will be aware if he plans to leave during your treatment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
During our consultation I felt like we were treated like humans, but once everything was said and done the final review I felt like a number being pushed out the door.

The clinic ran smoothly. The waiting room is comfortable, the parking was easy to find right outside the building. They have all the appropriate equipment and facilities onsite to get your testing done and they work with a surgery center very close by for the retrievals and surgeries.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
I was very lucky to be given a discount. The total payment was due before the cycle started. The cost breakdown on my sheet was: Pre-IVF Labs Male/Female/HSN: $3500 ($1500 for us) IVF Cycle and Anesthesia and Surgical Facility Fees: $11935 ($6020 for us) Cryopreservation of Embryo(s): $1250 ($980 for us which was refunded due to no surviving embryos)
Describe Ilan Tur-Kaspa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
He was not for multiple embryo transfer in my case based on my age and how he thought I would do.

His [Dr. Tur-Kaspa's] bedside manner left a LOT to be desired. When setbacks did occur, he would often answer tough questions with "It's just biology!", and during each of my four retrievals he 'personally thanked' my husband for his service and sacrifice. Funny the first time, but after months of exhaustive fertility treatments, by retrieval #3 and #4, I wanted to scream "WE GET IT." A little pushy with the 'sales front', but I do feel like he was extremely attentive, and always willing to adjust protocol to get desired results. Overall I'm torn over the entire experience as a patient with him, we were happy with results, but felt like he could be insensitive.
Results were left on the call-in voicemail, through e-mail, and phone calls, and I never really knew which method to check, or WHEN to expect them [at IHR]. Made for very stressful days waiting on results. Positive pregnancy results were usually phoned in, but one time was left on the voice-mail call-in, so after waiting an entire day past the 5pm close time of the office, I was justifiably angry to find out they had been on the call-in all along. Also, pregnancy results should ALWAYS be communicated via a phone call.

Stay on top of the clinic, and try not to take his 'jokes' personally.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
Dr. Tur Kaspa was very knowledgeable about my particular case and history, however the 'cattle call' of monitoring, and no attention to detail of the clinic had me feeling like just a number.
Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
Hard to remember all of the protocols, but he adjusted as necessary.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Very compassionate, and relatively easy to get a hold of. Cons - terrible with result communication, and high nurse turnover. Results were left on the call-in voicemail, through e-mail, and phone calls, and I never really knew which method to check, or WHEN to expect them. Made for very stressful days waiting on results. Positive pregnancy results were usually phoned in, but one time was left on the voice-mail call-in, so after waiting an entire day past the 5pm close time of the office, I was justifiably angry to find out they had been on the call-in all along. Strengths - smart doctors who are willing to go the extra mile to get results, compassionate nursing staff. Cons - not always reliable communication with staff
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Completely unpredictable Waiting anywhere from 15 min - 1.5 hours. Ultrasound tech was very fast, kind, and took patients in early.

mostly covered by insurance. PGD previously paid for through insurance, but separate PGD clinic recently changed policies and no longer takes any insurance except Aetna.

He strongly preferred one transfer since we were using PGD, which we were happy with

I felt like he just did the same thing over and over again expecting different results and was never around when things went wrong... He doesn't dig deep enough or think outside of the box.
I felt like the communication was absolutely terrible. You had to chase them to get any answers and when you called to follow up, they made you feel dumb for doing it. Dr. Tur-Kaspa was inaccessible and cold - especially for how small a practice it is.
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
I thought he was very demeaning and had terrible bedside manner. Always made it sound like as a woman I wasn't qualified to make decisions without my husband - even though I'm very knowledgable. I felt like he just did the same thing over and over again expecting different results and was never around when things went wrong.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
I think he is used to "easy cases" and has a huge ego being that he is "well known" and people come all the way from Israel to see him (his words). He doesn't dig deep enough or think outside of the box. I don't need to be Molly-coddled; but, a little bit of compassion after a miscarriage would be nice. Ie: the first call shouldn't be about when you will schedule your next transfer.

He was pretty good at adjusting my meds consistently; but never explained the protocol clearly. We used bravelle and Menopur - I was very successful in terms of #'s retrieved; but, none of the blasts stuck for a successful pregnancy (and we never changed protocols for FETs)
Describe your experience with your nurse at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic). (Assigned nurse: Can't remember)
They turned over a bit and weren't that readily available. Wouldn't answer emails and only called back when it was convenient for them - not you. Didn't communicate with the Doctor very well, so if things went wrong there was no way to get in touch

Dr Tur-Kaspa is a great man. His bedside manner was extraordinary and he was always kind. He has a great sense of humor and I appreciated that at such a difficult, stressful time. We met with three doctors and went with him first. Both my husband and I left our first consult and felt like he was the best fit. What we didn't know, being first time infertility patients, was that you rarely see the doctor. While it's extremely important to like the doctor, it's equally if not more important to like the nursing staff
The Oak Brook coordinator [at Institute for Human Reproduction] was horrible!! We LOVED the doctor but rarely saw him, as in Any fertility center, however felt as though the coordinator was horrible. In such a delicate time you HAVE to treat patients with compassion and care, something she was unable to do...Mary was just plain rude, both clinics were old and dirty, and we didn't like having to go downtown for all procedures. I did speak to the doctor about Mary and it didn't seem that there were many options. Also all of my paperwork that I obtained when I left was handwritten notes. There was no portal or way to get results except through Mary

She was horrible. She had a minimal personality and always seemed to be angry. We miscarried both cycles and her choice of words and lack of compassion is why we left. Dr. Tur-Kaspa is a terrific and knowledgeable Dr. The first live birth took me 7 transfers (3 miscarriages followed by 3 non pregnancies but he stayed positive and tweeted my meds until we got our baby. Then with 1 embryo left 2 years later, he told us about a test that made sure they were transferring at my most receptive window. The ERA test told us that I needed 12 more hours of progesterone so we went for it with just the 1 embryo and I am now 14 weeks pregnant!...
[IHR - Chicago clinic is] Very friendly, helpful and great. Easy parking. Good location right off the expressway...We could always go in at our convenience from 6:45 am-9:30 am Monday -Friday sometimes it was very quick and sometimes it took an hour at the most before completed but not too bad. I didn't have to take off work which was really nice. Never felt like a cattle call...

Dr. Tur-Kaspa explained everything, and when delivering bad news or dismal statistics, he do so with compassion and kindness... He made his email available for any question I thought of and wanted to ask before an appointment. He was on vacation in Israel when I miscarried twins, and he called me personally to convey his condolences.
My nurse coordinator was fantastic... The ultrasound tech at the satellite clinic was always friendly and chatty and super concerned. The doctor himself called me upon occasion. They all genuinely cared about me as a patient and a person.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
The financial coordinator once lost my payment for cryo. When that was straightened out, she then forgot to record it so I had to prove that it had been paid. She was a mess, but I hear that she's been let go since then.

Dr. Tur-Kaspa reassured me that he would get us pregnant. He was always very upbeat on the days of transfer which made me feel more at ease of the process. I was able to speak to him candidly about my concerns and he listened and did what I wanted. He never told us no...Be an advocate for yourself, he will listen to what you want...Everyone in the office is nice. Dr. Tur-Kaspa is very nice and reassuring of getting you pregnant...
The monitoring [at IHR - Chicago] is done as a first come first serve basis. In order to be seen quickly you should be there as early as 6:20 to be 1st through 3rd in line so you can get to work on time...The nurses were always very helpful. They were available to help and answer any questions. They were also very gentle when drawing blood or when I needed an ultrasound. Always open to answer any questions...

Dr. Tur-Kaspa was direct, humorous and very uplifting. I would definitely recommend using IHR if you are struggling with infertility. I enjoyed going to this fertility clinic because it was small.
I came to IHR [Institute for Human Reproduction] after going to another clinic. IHR is a small clinic so the staff and doctor really get to know you as we person.. There was only one nurse at this clinic and she always remembered me and remembered things we had talked about at previous appointments.

I met Dr. Tur Kaspa and hope was ignited again. Low AMH did not scare off Dr. Tur Kaspa. A previously failed cycle did not scare off Dr. Tur Kaspa. Dr. Tur Kaspa practices individualized medicine and created a protocol specific to me and my fertility needs...recommends single embryo transfer...was forever tweaking our regimen so that each cycle was more successful than the previous one... I felt like we shared the same goal and he was genuinely happy and excited with our success.

How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
I am writing this review as my six week old baby boy is napping in his bassinet. My fertility journey started off at a large and prestigious fertility clinic here in Chicago. I did one round of IVF at the fertility clinic on a maximum stimulation protocol. My hopes were dashed when the cycle failed miserably. I did not know where to go from there. The cycle was so unsuccessful that the doctor started talking about egg donors. I was crushed. I then heard about Dr. Tur Kaspa and decided to switch to his fertility clinic. Dr Tur-Kaspa had new ideas and offered tests and treatment that were never mentioned by our local doctor. We were successful on the first try...and again on the second try...When it comes to fertility care, you want the best. We wasted a lot of time and money...wish we would have seen Dr. Tur-Kaspa sooner...He also suggested the ERA test which showed the need for an adjustment in progesterone.
We were successful on the first try at IHR, and again on the second try. The doctors, clinical/office staff, and the lab are all top notch...The nursing staff is super responsive and helpful. They went the extra mile and showed a lot of compassion...I was an out of state patient and did most of my appointments locally, but when I did need to visit the clinic, it seemed to be run very efficiently and the staff was friendly. They have an online portal for communication which makes it very easy to get in touch coordinate your care.

I was pursuing motherhood on my own (using a sperm donor), and Dr. Tur Kaspa was very supportive of that. I felt like my treatment plan was very individualized and ended up being a success...Since I did PGTA testing to determine the Euploid embryos, Dr. Tur-Kaspa recommended I transfer one. He gave me the option of selecting the gender and he selected the best graded euploid embyro based on the gender...
The office [Institute for Human Reproduction] is diverse and I never felt uncomfortable or made to feel different...Multiple locations for monitoring -virtual visits with doctors where practical - Very friendly staff -Quick turnaround of results -Easy parking in the Chicago location and the surgical center has validated parking Weaknesses: -Sometimes there is a longer wait at the Chicago location if it’s busy. But all the other clinics are pretty fast, I was in and out within 15 minutes for blood work and ultrasound monitoring...
How was your experience with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
He’s very detailed, tries to make you feel comfortable. Will answer your questions. I’m a black woman and have been weary of medical bias and racism. The office is diverse and I never felt uncomfortable or made to feel different. In addition, I was pursuing motherhood on my own (using a sperm donor), and Dr. Tur Kaspa was very supportive of that. I felt like my treatment plan was very individualized and ended up being a success. I had 2 egg freezing cycles then came back and had 2FET’s. First was chemical, second resulted in a pregnancy.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
You can trust him to have your best interest in mind. Feel free to ask as many questions as you have. I would text the nurses if I had questions and they would follow-up with him as needed. I will say, when you do your labs or ultrasound, he will not be there but he reviews all the results and determines your next steps. So while there were times where I wasn’t interacting with him directly, I felt like he was still involved in my treatment plan.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic)?
They are very responsive and you are able to text the nurses. You also form a relationship with them over time.
Describe the protocols Ilan Tur-Kaspa used in your cycles at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic) and their degree of success.
Hard to remember but there were cases where my dosages were adjusted because my lining wasn’t progressing as desired. I did end up having 2 successful egg retrievals at age 33 that resulted in 15 eggs frozen in each cycle, for a total of 30. Funny enough, that was the goal! My first FET was a chemical and the second successful transfer did have a tweak in the dosage. All this to say that the treatment is very dynamic and individualized based on progress and prior results (if applicable).
Describe your experience with your nurse at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic). (Assigned nurse: There were different per cycle that I did)
Friendly, patient, responsive, empathetic.
Describe your experience with Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Strengths: -Knowledgeable doctors who are among the best in their field -Multiple locations for monitoring -virtual visits with doctors where practical - Very friendly staff -Quick turnaround of results -Easy parking in the Chicago location and the surgical center has validated parking Weaknesses: -Sometimes there is a longer wait at the Chicago location if it’s busy. Describe the costs associated with your care under Ilan Tur-Kaspa at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
1st egg retrieval - $17k out of pocket including meds 2nd egg retrieval - $15k including meds ICSI and Pgt- covered by insurance 1st and 2ndFET - not sure, covered by insurance
Describe Ilan Tur-Kaspa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Institute for Human Reproduction (Pinnacle Network Clinic).
Since I did PGTA testing to determine the Euploid embryos, Dr. Tur-Kaspa recommended I transfer one.
