Dr. Harris is thorough in his explanations for the current status of his treatments -- why a change in the medications he prescribes, the statuses of the follicles, and setting expectations for the numbers of eggs to be frozen...have set the expectation that I should have 7-8 mature eggs...cycle has been smooth, with the only major side effect I've felt from the drugs being bloating.
[Reproductive Science Center] was good. The front desk staff, the tech who drew my blood, and the nurse practitioner who did my ultrasounds were all friendly and pleasant to deal with...makes it a point to please avoid bringing one's children to the clinic as that might be sensitive for other patients
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
I am nearing the end of my treatment, having gone through retrieval earlier today. Dr. Harris is thorough in his explanations for the current status of his treatments -- why a change in the medications he prescribes, the statuses of the follicles, and setting expectations for the numbers of eggs to be frozen. He is reassuring when I would like to be reassured. I appreciate talking to him as he is super outgoing and positive.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Not sure. I can't think of any watch-outs or items that would be helpful to know before going in. Dr. Harris is thorough in answering your questions and explaining the "whys" behind your treatment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. Harris was always incredibly warm in his communications with me. He has a very upbeat personality, and he always starts his interactions with me by asking a very "human" question -- how I am feeling (especially right after the retrieval), how many children I'd like to have (in our initial conversation), etc. He always makes sure to answer all of my questions when we are talking on the phone.
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
I'm in my early 30s and undergoing egg freezing. I underwent 4 days where every night, I did two injections, one each, of two common FSH meds. Then, I did 6 nights of those two FSH meds, plus a third injection of a drug whose purpose was to suppress ovulation. This brings me to my trigger day, where in the afternoon, I did my normal dosage of that third drug, plus my normal dosage of one of the FSH meds. Dr. Harris explained to me that the purpose of the extra dosage of the FSH med was a "booster" to get my smaller follicles to grow. That evening, I did my two trigger shots. Retrieval yielded 10 eggs, and of those, Dr. Harris and the ultrasound techs have set the expectation that I should have 7-8 mature eggs. This cycle has been smooth, with the only major side effect I've felt from the drugs being bloating.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Laura Appeling)
My doctor was Dr. Harris, but I mainly communicated with Laura and Carla. They were both super responsive to me and did a good job of clearly communicating when they would be out of office, when they would be done with their shift, etc. so I would know to either leave a message in the portal or call the main line if I had any questions. They did a great job of making sure I knew my timelines for care. When I had an issue right after I did my trigger shots, they weren't online (I called the doctor on call, so that was fine) and they called me and messaged me first thing the next morning. In general, I felt comfortable asking them all sorts of "dumb questions" about treatment.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic).
The clinic was good. The front desk staff, the tech who drew my blood, and the nurse practitioner who did my ultrasounds were all friendly and pleasant to deal with. The physical locations I went to, San Mateo and San Ramon, were all clean and nice environments with music playing, candy jars, and wifi in the lobby. The clinic also makes it a point to please avoid bringing one's children to the clinic as that might be sensitive for other patients, which I thought was good practice. The clinic also does a good job of making sure that in the video modules you're required to watch before and during the process, you have a good understanding of the process and know what to expect on the day of retrieval. I also liked the 90 minute injection class I took because it made me feel a lot more prepared to do the injections.
In general, communications with the clinic were smooth since they took place over the patient portal and over the phone. After every phone call, Laura or Carla would leave a summary of the call in the portal so I could reference it later. Also, all of the instructions for doing the injections are very clear. Likewise, you can tell that the clinic really has all of the procedures, scheduling, etc. down to a science.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic).
My insurance covered most of the costs. However, from the quote I got in the beginning of the process, the cycle fee for one round of egg freezing is about $9,000. I know I just barely hit my health insurance max of $10,000 for Rx fertility drugs. So, the cost of one cycle for me would have cost about $19k without insurance.
I came to Dr. Harris for my first IUI, which I did during a Letrozole cycle. He was supportive but said I'd have better success with IVF. After the second failed IUI (chemical pregnancy), I begun IVF, so in a way I feel like he was right all along but it took me awhile to get there emotionally/mentally. IVF hasn't been as much of a "sure bet" as he explained it would be.
I preferred interacting with Dr. Harris [at Spring Fertility] directly to discuss my treatment plan. Initially, I was assigned to Nanette who was difficult to reach via e-mail and sometimes I didn't understand her recommendations. Additionally, I had one chemical pregnancy and she didn't provide the level of compassion I expected from a nurse.
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Dr. Harris was relatable and easy to talk to; in the few visits where my husband joined me, he provided a place that was comfortable for a man going through this process. He was very clear on his thoughts on IUI vs. IVF up front but mentally, I wasn't ready to go straight to IVF w/o trying IUI. He respected my decision and supported me. He is very optimistic and always tells me everything "looks great" which is ironic because I feel like I'd be pregnant already if everything was truly "great". As I experienced set backs, one being a lab error (scheduled for the wrong day for my FET), Dr. Harris accepted accountability but was pretty dismissive of my emotional state and just kept saying he has faith I will eventually be a mom despite acknowledging the IVF fatigue I was experiencing. He also provided a "pregnancy guarantee" which never came into fruition under his care so it felt a bit like an empty promise.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Take advantage of the time you have with him and ask a lot of questions. During each treatment I would ask him the questions I had instead of trying to schedule calls thru the clinic. But if I needed to do calls through the clinic, I'd do that. Do not always depend on the nurse being your "middle man". He's a great doctor but I cannot recommend the clinic in good faith. They don't care about their patients in the way you deserve to be cared for.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Dr. Harris was personable and spoke in terms I understood. However when things started getting difficult (failed transfer) he was seemingly less understanding, said that 1/3 embryo doesn't result in a live birth and was overly optimistic which didn't help the pain I was experiencing. Towards the end of treatment it was clear to me that Spring was processing patients like a factory vs. a personalized experience. This became evident when my protocol was impacted due to a clinical error.
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Spring Fertility San Francisco and their degree of success.
I have "unexplained infertility", before trying I visited him to get the full work up to ensure my reproductive system was working as expected. However, I never had a HSG which I feel like is odd for someone who was doing IUI. I preferred interacting with Dr. Harris directly to discuss my treatment plan. Initially, I was assigned to Nanette who was difficult to reach via e-mail and sometimes I didn't understand her recommendations. Additionally, I had one chemical pregnancy and she didn't provide the level of compassion I expected from a nurse. She rarely replied to my emails in a timely fashion and I recently learned she works from home so I've never met her in person. Upon expressing concern to Spring about my nurse, they changed me to Jill who is FANTASTIC. She has really been an angel in the entire process, addressing all of the gaps I expressed with the previous nurse. However, when Jill is out I do not trust the other nurses to fully execute my care. For example, when Jill was out of the office another nurse scheduled my FET on the wrong day, meaning I missed my window of repetitive and the FET was cancelled which was heart breaking. I am really displeased with this outcome and working with the clinic & Dr. Harris specifically on being made "whole" from this devastating experience which means another FET to be covered by Spring.
Describe your experience with Spring Fertility San Francisco.
Spring clinic is conveniently located in Redwood City, San Francisco and Oakland. Their clinics are state of the art and have a clean aesthetic with coordinating decor which is welcoming. They are very timely with their appointments. However, Spring does not take time to understand underlying fertility issues and the items they miss could be the reason you aren't conceiving. I can't trust them whole heatedly and they do not treat you like person with the several hoops you need to jump through to talk to the doctors.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
Spring is a Fertility Factory, sometimes they get it right and thats sheer luck but mostly they don't.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
100% covered by Progyny insurance after meeting my insurance deductible
Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
I wouldn't mind twins but Dr. Harris said he would only transfer one embryo at my age.

Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy

Canceled a cycle due to clinic error

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
My cycle coordinator (Michelle) is dealing with 1000 other clients and at times it feels like a factory operation instead of a fertility experience. She has made typos in emails and sent incorrect information so I second guess every email she sends which is unfortunate but she has gotten a little better, so I am thankful for that. Now I am working primarily with Dr. Harris & Nurse (Jill) for my communications.

I felt that Dr. Harris went above and beyond to personalize both my various treatment protocols, as well as delivery of updates and information. Everyone who meets him can attest to his infectious cheerful attitude - I’ve never felt more uplifted and relieved of my anxiety before a surgery than before my egg retrievals with Dr. Harris...personalized his approach to delivering updates for me. I wanted as much information as possible and he took time to explain in detail - which was comforting to me.
They [Reproductive Science Center] are very up to date with the latest research and I always felt they were making the best possible clinical decisions for me. Sometimes I got anxious waiting for updates that came a little later than I hoped, but it always eventually came and eventually I learned that a slightly delayed update did not imply bad news...They [RSC nurses] kept the process running smoothly and answered questions. They were very knowledgeable, kind and compassionate.
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Throughout my IVF experience, I was so grateful to have such an outstanding reproductive endocrinologist who not only showed me compassion and kindness but helped to ease my anxieties as best as they could be by providing me with a wealth of information about my process, even if it wasn’t always positive news. I felt that Dr. Harris went above and beyond to personalize both my various treatment protocols, as well as delivery of updates and information. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
IVF treatment is so so hard under the best of circumstances and rest assured that you’re getting some of the best possible care with Dr. Harris and RSC (CDC reported success rates confirm this).

Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Primed with estrogen/progesterone oral birth control due to dominant follicle in first failed IVF cycle. Ovarian stimulation started at Menopur 150 units, Gonal F 225 units, cetrotide after day 5, Omnitrope to improve egg quality in both egg retrieval cycles under Dr. Harris. Dual HcG GnRH agonist trigger.
Results:
ER 2: 8 eggs retrieved, 5 fertilized, 2 day 6 2BB embryos that tested euploid were frozen.
ER 3: 19 eggs retrieved, 10 fertilized, 3 day 6 embryos, 1 5AA euploid, 1 6AB inconclusive PGT-A, 1 6BB aneuploid.
For my transfer I did a modified natural protocol with Letrozole, HcG trigger and progesterone suppositories 2x a day with a 2BB euploid. This transfer was successful and I’m currently pregnant (10 weeks 5 days).

Describe your experience with Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic).
The biggest strength of this clinic is their success rates being a good deal higher than the national average, particularly for women of advanced age or with issues like ovulatory disorders or diminished ovarian reserve. They are very up to date with the latest research and I always felt they were making the best possible clinical decisions for me.

Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic).
Since my embryo was euploid the clinic mandates eSET.
Dr. Harris always presented with warm bedside manners...very patient in answering a lot of my questions...would call me after my ultrasound and lab work results to let me know how I am doing and propose next steps...Follistim 150, Menopur started with 150, dropped to 75 after 3 days. Ganirelix started on day 6. Lupron trigger and pregnyl 36 hours before retrieval.
RSC has been a great clinic. Never any wait for monitoring appointments and well run. Contacting, scheduling, and payments were easy...only do egg retrievals in the San Ramon office...recently started having an on-site egg storage facility...Sharon was an absolute delight to have by my side as I went through the difficult and uncertain process
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Overall I felt well cared for, monitored, and promptly communicated on the plans. There was not much follow up after the retrieval process, I imagined there would be a follow up blood work or doctor appointment but there wasn't any. I was messaging with the nurse on the symptoms anyway and was starting to recover well, so perhaps there wasn't a need for any follow ups in my case. And I feel confident that if there was, it would have been easy to reach the doctor and the clinic. During the process, I felt like I could easily reach Dr. Harris if I had any questions or concerns. I tend to tread carefully and am a skeptic but throughout the process, the doctor understood me well and helped ease my concerns and explain the reason for choosing certain protocol or doses.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic)?
If you are on the verge of egg-freezing decision, I highly encourage you set up an initial appointment with Dr. Harris and go through your situation. Ask as many questions as you like. Explain your needs and priorities and let the doctor know if you have any concerns and he can help suggest a direction for your case.

Sharon was an absolute delight to have by my side as I went through the difficult and uncertain process. She never skips a beat, is always on top of communicating with me and reaching out to me with the lab results and next steps. Her emails are extremely detailed with links to videos for injections, and details on administering doses. She never left anything to vague communication. Also, she was very easily available on the phone. I never had a time when I wanted to reach out to Sharon and could not reach her. She is extremely prompt in replying to the messages on the portal too. Most cases, she replies within an hour, and I am always guaranteed to hear from her before she leaves for the day. She would also call me after every monitoring appointment to walk me through the medication plan that she emailed earlier to make sure I understood everything. Very compassionate, and caring throughout the process. I felt very lucky to be assigned her as a nurse case manager.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Science Center (US Fertility Network clinic).
Overall RSC has been a great clinic. Never any wait for monitoring appointments and well run. Contacting, scheduling, and payments were easy. They only do egg retrievals in the San Ramon office which was an hour long drive on the day of the retrieval but given this is a one-time activity, I didn't mind. The facilities on the clinic during the retrieval procedure felt great. They recently started having an on-site egg storage facility it seems in case you do not want to transport eggs.

Dr. Harris is compassionate, empathetic, and real. He related to me and my husband on a personal level. We enjoyed seeing him for visits and appreciated his humor and candor...He truly cares and goes above and beyond. Spring puts a great effort into their customer service. Our patient navigator , Lauren, was fantastic - very timely and clear responses, and personable as well as compassionate. Staff was very helpful with medication coordination, even last minute. The facilities are beautiful with nice amenities. I appreciated the ability to do monitoring visits in the clinic closest to our home in SF though we drove to Sunnyvale for Dr. Harris...The whole Spring nursing team works together - I often got calls from nurses other than my own. How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility Silicon Valley?
I cannot recommend Dr. Harris enough. There are many options for IVF in the Bay Area and we could not be happier that he is our doctor. He is extremely intelligent and kicks butt at his job, but he’s very special in his ability to relate to his patients. He truly cares and goes above and beyond. Dr. Harris was so understanding and compassionate, something we needed after 3 miscarriages and a whole lot of anxiety. His projections (for egg retrieval, etc) were spot on, and he was always happy to answer my 100 questions and allay my fears. We would choose him again and again and recommend him to anyone and everyone. I should add that he is successful - as we currently have a perfect 5 week old boy after our 1 retrieval and 1 transfer :)

The whole Spring nursing team works together - I often got calls from nurses other than my own. They’re all very organized and helpful. Our one issue was that we did not feel we got complete answers from the nursing team, e.g. my husband was told to take a course of antibiotics after semen analysis but did not get a good understanding of why even after a talk with our nurse.

How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility Silicon Valley?
We went to Dr. Harris after suffering two miscarriages and seemingly no longer able to get pregnant. Dr. Harris was very optimistic even though we were not but it was nice to feel like we had someone in our corner. He went over what he thought would be the best course of action for us and heard our concerns and we agreed to go forward with IVF. Other than our first two embryo transfers which were done at the SF lab (Sunnyvale wasn't open yet), Dr. Harris handled every procedure I had, every appointment, and every transfer. He was always there to answer questions. Even on the bad days I would have a chuckle with him and was able to hold on the hope that one day we'd have good news. Dr. Harris has an amazing ability to make you feel safe and secure in the fact that he is doing all he can for you and your care but also keep things lighthearted and fun which is hard to do with such a delicate and personal situation like infertility.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility Silicon Valley?
We found Dr. Harris to be very optimistic, which is great but at times I just wasn't there. I couldn't be optimistic and I told him that. He respected that and held that hope for us but allowed us the space to feel discouraged.

Overall my experience was great. I met nurses who I really felt connected to and who made every effort to make me feel cared for throughout my experience. My care coordinator was also very helpful and patient managing what I know were a lot of emails from me. I did run into some issues at a point where there was a bit of turnover and I felt a few details were being lost in translation but once I voiced my concerns the issues were quickly resolved. On the day I finally when in for my followup HCG test all my favorite nurses stood with my while they did my blood draw for the last time and hugged me and congratulated me. It was such a special moment for me.
Describe your experience with Spring Fertility Silicon Valley.
At the time I was at Spring the Sunnyvale clinic was very new and there was a lot of turnover with my assigned nurses (not clinic nurses) that was my biggest frustration early in my experience but I imagine that has since worked itself out and as previously mentioned, once I spoke to Dr .Harris and voiced my concerns and frustrations this never happened again. The clinic is beautiful and comfortable, the front desk was always warm and friendly. Another great thing was I had all but one of my appointments with Dr. Harris.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Spring Fertility Silicon Valley.
One time, during another case nurse switch I was told I was having a procedure that was incorrect. I was in fact having a procedure but she told me the wrong one which caused me to be confused and stressed out that we were missing the window for the procedure I needed. It was not in fact scheduled incorrectly, she simply told me the wrong information. It was quickly resolved.
He also put me to ease with some of my initial questions and concerns. During my initial ultrasound, Dr. Harris expressed his expectations clearly and was more than willing to explain things further when I asked. All in all, we were able to retrieve and freeze exactly the number of eggs he anticipated and on the timeline I had aimed for...
[Spring Fertility] Strengths: Spring is a well-oiled machine. I never waited more than 2 minutes to be seen and everything was extremely organized and thought through ahead of time. Most of my appointments took place at 7am, which worked very well for my schedule. I loved that I didn't have to work through an intense phone tree when I called the main line to speak with someone
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
I absolutely enjoyed working with Dr. Harris! From the first time we met (he came out to the waiting room to greet me himself and even behind the mask, I could tell he had the biggest smile) I felt like he was just as excited for my journey as I was. He also put me to ease with some of my initial questions and concerns. During my initial ultrasound, Dr. Harris expressed his expectations clearly and was more than willing to explain things further when I asked. All in all, we were able to retrieve and freeze exactly the number of eggs he anticipated and on the timeline I had aimed for.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Dr. Harris has a wealth of knowledge - I recommend you come to each appointment with your questions ahead of time so you make sure they're all covered!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
From my first call to my follow up consultation with Dr. Harris, each person I spoke with at Spring displayed nothing but empathy and authentic dedication to helping me with my egg freezing journey.
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Spring Fertility San Francisco and their degree of success.
I had told Dr. Harris about my timeline to complete the egg freezing cycle - which was short - and he was very willing to be flexible with me. I really appreciated that he spent the time to make sure I understood the pros and cons of working within my timeline, which helped me make an informed decision about next steps.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Spring Fertility San Francisco. (Assigned nurse: Beth)
Beth is an absolute ROCK STAR. I had so many questions as I was beginning the injection series and Beth was so patient, understanding, and genuinely helpful in making sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. On two occasions, I e-mailed her over a weekend with a question and she gave me a phone call within 15 minutes each time to answer my questions. This level of support was absolutely above and beyond! Beth really helped me feel confident throughout the treatment cycle.

Weaknesses: Truthfully, I can't think of any. I had a lot of trouble with the routine blood work during every visit, however this is mainly due to my body not cooperating with me and not the fault of the medical assistants.
Ultimately, I went into this experience with someone tepid expectations and Spring blew me away on all fronts.
What specific things went wrong at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Lost or damaged samples
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
A few vials of blood from my initial bloodwork clotted and I had to go in for another blood draw.
Dr. Harris is the nicest, most empathetic doctor I have ever had. Even with a mask on his smile is contagious. He has so much positive energy which helped me get through everything. He was not excessively optimistic. He helped me to set reasonable or even a little bit low expectations so that I could be prepared for various things that could happen. He took time to answer all the questions I threw at him. It is on you to ask questions though if you are interested in non-essential things. I was amazed how well he kept track of my case while also taking care of many other patients.
All of the nurses that took care of me [at Spring Fertility] were amazing and so nice. I emailed Aubrey so many questions everyday and she was so patient and compassionate and helpful. The nurses in the Redwood City clinic and surgical nurses in SF were great. I couldn't ask for a better team. Both of my cycles were during the COVID lockdown and I still felt like everyone was so warm and professional. No one asked me to write a review, I just had such a good experience with Dr. Harris and the clinic overall that I wanted to say thank you to these awesome heroes!
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Dr. Harris is super nice. He is also very experienced and sharp. He has a compassionate nature and a good sense of humor. He also helped someone else I know and she said he was amazing with her as well through a long IVF journey.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
I think choosing a doctor is personal so you might want to do a consultation with a couple of doctors and then choose which one you felt best with. If you work with Dr. Harris or any doctor I'd say make sure to do some research on IVF so that you can know what questions to ask. Write down your questions and don't hesitate to ask them to your doctor and nurses.

Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Spring Fertility San Francisco and their degree of success.
First cycle we did a follicular protocol with Aygestin and ten days of Gonal and Menopur with great results. Second cycle we did a midluteal protocol where you start 5 days after ovulation and twelve days of Gonal and Menopur with even better results. The doctor said he wished he could take credit but there is some randomness in how many follicles your body has each month so unclear how much the protocol helped but I was very happy he could make adjustments based on my first cycle to create a better second cycle and that he was humble about it and how well it worked.

Describe your experience with Spring Fertility San Francisco.
Spring does a lot of little things that are very nice like letting you email your nurse. They also have a great website with videos about everything including how to do all the shots. They spoiled me with things like they gave me a small box of chocolate when I finished my retrievals. Their clinics are nice and clean and nicely decorated. For me I am near Redwood City so it was not ideal I had to go to SF for weekend appointments and retrieval but it was worth it to me.
Since I did have appointments on weekends and on two holidays I ended up seeing some different doctors (Dr. Tran, Dr. Fisher and NP Audrey Krall) but I felt like they very cohesively communicated my case and my instructions with Dr. Harris and my nurse Aubrey Baker. I got a lot of phone calls before and after the retrieval to make sure my questions were answered. They all make up a great team.
I think with any clinic you do have to realize that you need to be informed and not expect the nurses or doctors will totally hold your hand on everything. You need to educate yourself about your body, IVF, risks, statistics and options and ask them lots of questions. Keep low/reasonable expectations for everything to minimize bad surprises or disappointment. It is very hard to predict your outcome and the doctors are trying their best but you need to advocate for yourself and raise any concerns. I advise creating a document or notebook for yourself with your plan, your options, your risks, your questions just like you might do for a work project. I recommend therapy or a support group as needed. Part of your plan should be how you will handle all the uncertainty in this process through things like music, art, meditation, friends, movies, time off, baking, etc. It is very hard on your body and your mind.
Dr. Harris took the time to explain the process, set clear expectation backed by research numbers and explained the risks. I've done my research before the consultation and asked a lot of questions - he was warm and patient, willing to pause to explain/elaborate on what he said and let me take the time to take notes and digest the information...always greeted me with a warm smile and is able to articulate the results and decision to me in a thorough manner.
My [Spring Fertility] nurse of very thorough with her response when she reaches out. However, sometimes it takes longer than I would expect to get a response, I've gotten responses ranging from 12 hours to 5 days...Strengths: Clean, organized clinic with professional staff and doctors. Very speedy and timely from an operational standpoint which I truly appreciate during the phase where I needed to come in every other day for blood drawn. I also want to mention Spring's Financial Counselor. She has been extremely responsive, thorough and helpful in addressing any finance related problems I ran into

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility Silicon Valley?
It's a good idea to attend Spring's workshop to get an idea of the process; do your research and bring your questions/concerns to the consultation. Take the time you need to feel comfortable and understand the process.

It was very efficient and easy to schedule monitoring appointments.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility Silicon Valley.
Dr. Harris has been a perfect blend of being very skilled at what he does and also being great with patients...He strongly encouraged single embryo transfer in our case, which matched what we wanted...The treatment plan felt tailored to us. He reviewed past failed rounds from another clinic and was clear about what changes he'd make and why..
She was responsive and organized, which helped me feel confident going into the procedure...Much of results at an IVF clinic rests in the lab and the embryologists, not just the doctors. Spring seems to excel at attracting great doctors and nurses as well as running a finely tuned lab. The lab provided so much more data about the embryo growth and evaluation than we got at our previous clinic. Everything feels state of the art and driven by data, which seems to be reflected in the results they're able to achieve.
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Dr. Harris has been a perfect blend of being very skilled at what he does and also being great with patients. It's not enough to know what you're doing if you can't communicate it, and he does this well. At my former clinic I often left more confused, but here I leave every conversation feeling more confident. The protocols seem more in line with current research and are more data-driven from beginning to end. Dr. Harris feels personally invested in the outcome and takes his time to make sure we're on the same page.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
Consider the cost of repeated rounds vs getting the best possible results the first time. We flew in from out of state just to work with Dr. Harris. We paid more than if we had stayed local (plus the travel costs) and I only wish we made that decision sooner. We had 2 failed rounds at a local clinic. Dr. Harris got far better results with a single round, meaning we would have saved money to just start with him.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isiah Harris at Spring Fertility San Francisco?
The treatment plan felt tailored to us. He reviewed past failed rounds from another clinic and was clear about what changes he'd make and why. Far more comforting than trying roughly the same stuff again and again. His bedside manner was also far warmer and reassuring. I didn't think I cared about bedside manner (just get me the results!) but in a process with so much anxiety, it has been truly helpful.
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Spring Fertility San Francisco and their degree of success.
Ovulation predictor kits to identify ovulation. Menopur and Gonal-F with decreased dosage the last few days of stimulation. Cetrotide starting day 8 of stim. Leuprolide and Novarel to trigger on Day 11. Retrieval on Day 13 under anesthesia (didn't feel a thing). 21 eggs retrieved and 19 were mature. All 19 fertilized successfully using ICSI. By day 3, 15 embryos were growing and considered good quality. By Day 6, we had 7 blastocysts that were biopsied. PGT testing found 4 to be euploid/normal. We haven't transferred any of these yet.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Spring Fertility San Francisco. (Assigned nurse: Beth - Nurse)
Everyone at Spring has been friendly throughout the process. My nurse, Beth, met with me to answer questions about injections, review the plan before the retrieval, and followed up afterwards as well. She was responsive and organized, which helped me feel confident going into the procedure.

$18-19K for monitoring, egg retrieval, embryo creation, genetic testing. $4-5K for stimulation meds. $2-3K for initial consultation and screening. (Haven't paid for embryo transfer yet.)
Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
He strongly encouraged single embryo transfer in our case, which matched what we wanted, and what our gestational carrier preferred as well. He was very willing to review the risks and discuss the underlying reasoning with us.
[Dr. Harris] was open and honest of all risk of each treatment and which one he recommended giving I have PCOS. During treatment I had a death in the family and he remembered and checked on us...After my second miscarriage he reassured me it wasn’t my fault and made sure I wasn’t blaming myself (which I was) and kept the line of communication open after I decided to take a break...prefers IUI over timed intercourse but does everything.
When I walked in all staff members [at Spring Fertility] knew my name and were happy to see me. When my blood work showed I was pregnant they all called and congratulated me. When I had my miscarriages they called and checked on me. The whole office was amazing...[nurses were] very friendly and caring throughout the whole process...After my second miscarriage [Dr. Harris] reassured me it wasn’t my fault and made sure I wasn’t blaming myself (which I was) and kept the line of communication open after I decided to take a break.

All three times we did letrozole after my period then the trigger shot (ovidrel) 5-7 days later after making sure my follicles grown to a certain size. The first no results which he explained was normal, the second and third time I became pregnant and the both ended in miscarriages.

Snacks, juice and water once you walk in. The desk is literally steps away from the front and everyone is smiling no what time is it lol (I use to get there early). Whatever time your appointment is, is when you will be seen no extra waiting and if your early you may get lucky and seen then.

Dr. Harris has a warm demeanor and is really invested in success for his patients...At the beginning there was some miscommunication, but when I expressed my concern Dr. Harris was apologetic and made up for the initial misunderstanding...He was always sure to ask at each visit how things are going, whether you have experienced any side effects, etc...is openly optimistic and enthusiastic, and the result is that you can get swept into the optimism and expect more from your treatment than it can realistically deliver.
Strengths [at Spring Fertility]: - great staff - clear communication - transparent - very clean Weaknesses: - they use a surgical center that is out of network for all insurance - some procedures can only be done at the SF office so if you are going to the RWC office expect to have to go downtown occasionally...She [nurse] was warm, friendly, and followed up quickly when I had questions. Her e-mails with the course of treatment were always detailed and clear.

Dr. Harris is openly optimistic and enthusiastic, and the result is that you can get swept into the optimism and expect more from your treatment than it can realistically deliver. We used Clomid with an Ovidrel trigger shot followed by IUI three times. We have just started our first IVF cycle with Dr. Harris. Given our severe male factor infertility, he originally suggested we skip IUI and go directly to IVF, but that was not financially feasible for us at the time so we attempted IUI anyway despite the probable negative outcome. The first IUI cycle I had some spotting pre-period, which is unusual for me, and a positive pregnancy test long after the Ovidrel should have dissipated so we suspect the possibility of a chemical pregnancy. Dr. Harris was thorough with his description of the different approaches we could take with IVF and explained clearly why he felt the approach we went with was best for us. We're using birth control for 2 weeks followed by injectables for egg retrieval at the end of the month.

The self-pay cost for IUI is $1600 and it's $18,375 for IVF. With insurance, we paid ~$600 for the first two IUI cycles and nothing for the second as we'd hit our max out of pocket. IVF is going to cost around $3000 and most of that is the out-of-network surgical center. I don't yet know what additional there will be on top of that for the genetic testing, anesthesiologist, etc.
Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Spring Fertility San Francisco.
We didn't discuss this as I had decided in advance that I wanted to do single embryo transfer.
He [Dr. Harris] was over 30 minutes late to our 60 minute consultation... I was very disappointed with his time management skills and felt very rushed by how quickly he was taking. He sounded very optimistic for our chances of getting pregnant, but did not describe our options well.... I was switched to letrozole as a result of negative side effects from clomid. He then encouraged us to do IUI with ovidrel to trigger ovulation to time the insemination to increase our chances since my cycles are so inconsistent and at times I have anovatory cycles.
Prescriptions are given quickly, responsive by email, and clean facilities [Kaiser Sunnyvale]. Weaknesses include feeling like a number, no assignment to a primary nurse so you work with different people all the time, and no 24 hour on call nurse should something come up after hours or on the weekend.... I had a really great experience with the NP Carla Schouten, where she walked me through my baseline ultrasound and my IUI.

NP Deborah Pluckhan did not convey critical information for my to make an informed decision about my medication protocol and my scheduled IUI.
I think IVF doctors forget that its hard for people going through infertility. Very emotional experience and a very pricy one. I did 3 rounds of IUI before meeting Dr Harris. When I did finally meet him I didn't feel like my meds were strong enough so in return my body didn't produce follicles...They have more control over things that I think I should be able to weigh in or have more control over. Appointments were always rushed.
Love the staff and specifically Marion Columbo. I really established a relationship with her since I spent 9 months with her. She was amazing. Quick to answer questions, very clear on what she was doing....I feel like everyone is just a number to Kaiser. Maybe it's because they are so large. Don't feel like they care about each person. I don't like how controlling Kaiser is either. I also don't like communication with Kaiser. You can't just call Dr office and schedule a call.

they would just forget to call back or call in one medication once.
Dr. Harris has great bedside manners. I can trust him because he gives me all the information I need and warns me about risks. For example, he warned me that I am at risk for OHSS and confidently told me he would closely manage my medication to prevent OHSS as much as possible.... I was diagnosed with PCOS. My husband was diagnosed with non-obstructive azoospermi (NOA). We knew we’d be using donor sperm and Dr. Harris said we could try IUI cycles or IVF ICSI. We are paying out of pocket so we opted for IUI.
The front office staff [Kaiser NorCal] is amazing. The team is professional and patient. They swiftly get me checked in and ready for my appointment. Some patients attended the appointment with their baby and the staff would naturally congratulate them, but it stung a little bit. It felt inconsiderate for the staff to celebrate a baby in the wait room around patients who are there because we cannot get pregnant. Maybe the can have blank cards at hand saying: congratulations! Instead of talking about the baby’s arrival in front of patients.

I was diagnosed with PCOS. My husband was diagnosed with non-obstructive azoospermi (NOA). We knew we’d be using donor sperm and Dr. Harris said we could try IUI cycles or IVF ICSI. We are paying out of pocket so we opted for IUI. We knew the chances were slim (5-8%), but we had to try before seriously considering IVF ICSI. Before starting the IUI cycles, Dr. Harris and his team of Nurse Practitioners helped regular my thyroid hormone by taking Levothroid once a day. It took about 3 months to get my thyroid under control. Each IUI cycle consisted of: Femara 3 times a day for 5 days, vaginal scan to see if I was ovulating soon (periods are irregular), trigger shot in my belly (Ovidrel). All of this was painless and mildly uncomfortable. The vaginal scans and inseminations are uncomfortable. All 3 IUI resulted in negative pregnancy tests. We decided to move forward and try IVF ICSI. We have our date booked for January 6, 2019 and we’re looking forward to be under Dr. Hariss’ care.

Three different Nurse Practitioners did my IUIs. It wasn’t ideal, however, between managing both our work schedules and the NP’s availability, we had to work with what was available to us. Before, I was very receptive about who I would book my appointments with. Now, I am happy to take an appointment that works with our schedules and gets me pregnant! :)
Describe your experience with Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
The front office staff is amazing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
For the 3 IUI cycles we spent about $3,000 (including medication: insurance covered 50%). Plus, another $4000 for 3 vials of donor sperm. Currently we placed a deposit for $13,000 for IVF ICSI (cost of medications not included).
Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
This question isn’t applicable because we haven’t done IVF, but Dr. Harris did stress to me that he wants to do a single embryo transfer. We’re okay with that decision because we want to do what will be most safe for myself and the baby.
Dr. Harris is warm, friendly, knowledgable, and really partners with you...He did every monitoring ultrasound during IVF, and would make adjustments as he saw you...Dr. Harris is really incredible. He talks very fast, but he is so well versed in the research and gives rationale for why he wanted to do a protocol...He doesn't recommend lifestyle changes (ie supplements, diet, etc). However, he fully supports you if you want to do them... he always manages to light up the room with his infectious smile and laughter.
Kaiser does not assign you a primary nurse for IUIs or IVF. The IUIs are all done by rotating NPs-- all of whom are competent, kind, and engaging...For IUIs, they don't perform them on Sundays, so they'll do it a little early or late if the ideal time was a Sunday...They also made you pay to reserve your spot... I was surprised that it was the nurse who gave the results; not Dr. Harris...When the nurse called me with my beta, she told me I wasn't pregnant. However, I did have a low positive pregnancy test (17).
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Dr. Harris is really incredible. He talks very fast, but he is so well versed in the research and gives rationale for why he wanted to do a protocol. He did every monitoring ultrasound during IVF, and would make adjustments as he saw you. He tried to set expectations about how many he expected to retrieve and why he was making adjustments to the protocol. He batches patients so that he can do every ultrasound-- so he'll go from retrieval to ultrasound to transfer to ultrasound all day long. I'm pretty sure he doesn't sleep for 3 weeks at a time. However, he always manages to light up the room with his infectious smile and laughter.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
He doesn't recommend lifestyle changes (ie supplements, diet, etc). However, he fully supports you if you want to do them. He knows how out of control this feels and will support you if want to try to find some control. So please be honest with your supplements; he'll give you an honest opinion about when to start/stop them during your cycle.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Dr. Harris is warm, friendly, knowledgable, and really partners with you. He shares pieces of his life with you, knows who you are, and asks about partner/life/work.
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente NorCal and their degree of success.
I did a couple of injectable IUIs where the lead follicle stopped growing with a step-down approach (meaning I started at higher doses and then decreased the dose). Based on this data, he made some adjustments to my IVF protocol. We did the antagonist protocol. We started with 150 follistim/150 menopur and then added in the ganirelix after day 6 or 7 of stims. We increased the dose of one or the other med at each appointment, with my max being 375 for both meds by the end. We did ICSI just as a precaution and I'm glad we did; it just took the guesswork out of it.
We expected 12 mature eggs, but only ended up with 8 (this was a huge blow!). 7 fertilized and all 7 were growing well at day 3, so we opted for a day 5 transfer. When we got to transfer, we spoke with Dr. Harris and the embryologist who informed us that we had an early blast and a morula. Both of these were a little behind where they "should" have been. All the rest had already arrested or were so far behind they most likely wouldn't make it. They encouraged us to transfer both despite our terror of twins. He did the transfer and then he has a little dance/ritual he does over all his patients after transfer (waving his hands over your abdomen-- maybe a little prayer?) I loved it; as I really felt he was giving us extra love (even if medically it doesn't make a difference). Unfortunately we did not have anything to freeze and our transfer ended in a chemical pregnancy.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
Kaiser does not assign you a primary nurse for IUIs or IVF. The IUIs are all done by rotating NPs-- all of whom are competent, kind, and engaging. The IVF nurses reinforce what Dr.Harris just told you when he did your ultrasound.
I was surprised that it was the nurse who gave the results; not Dr. Harris. Unfortunately, they informed me I was not pregnant (beta 17) and to stop all meds. I now understand that while the chance of sustaining the pregnancy is almost nothing; I was technically pregnant. I wish they would have told me to continue meds and re-test in 2 days (rather than stop and re-test a week later) I'm 99% sure the outcome would have been the same, but I wish they would have given it a shot. And I didn't know enough to push for it.
Describe your experience with Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
Kaiser is a well oiled machine. For all fertility workup, it's pretty standardized, meaning they do initial blood work, semen analysis, saline sonogram, HSG, and hysteroscopy regardless of diagnosis (I think). I never felt like diagnostic testing was hard to get or was missed.
For IUIs, they don't perform them on Sundays, so they'll do it a little early or late if the ideal time was a Sunday. For IVF, it's a full 7 day/week system. They batch patients as the Dr does every ultrasound and you see him at every visit. Unfortunately, that meant a pretty long wait in between cycles. But, that does mean a ton of face time with your dr and consistent scans. They also made you pay to reserve your spot. This meant we paid almost 6 months before cycling (which was a nice break), but now I wish we had gone somewhere else or paid for IVF while still doing IUIs to not have that long break. We ended up switching clinics simply because we couldn't do another 6 month break before cycling again. If we could have cycled more quickly, we would have stayed with Dr. Harris and Kaiser.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
The monitoring could take 10 mins or 3 hours. Since Dr. Harris does all of his own monitoring, he would go from retrieval to ultrasound to transfer to ultrasound. It was great that you always saw your doctor, but it could lead to some very LONG waits. Additionally, you're given a specific time for monitoring, but it's actually first come/first serve. So ignore the time you're given and just show up as early as possible.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
Fertility workup, IUIs were all covered under insurance, so very minimal. IVF was completely out of pocket. I believe it was about 12k for IVF + ICSI. Meds were separate and ended up at about 6k.
Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
He favors eSET, but since both of our embryos were a little behind (early blast and morula) he felt that the morula would probably NOT make it, so it was less risky.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
When the nurse called me with my beta, she told me I wasn't pregnant. However, I did have a low positive pregnancy test (17). Granted, I don't think it would ended in a live birth, but there's a difference between less than 0 and 17. It proved I could GET pregnant (the first time I ever was) and that information changed the way I thought about the cycle and subsequent cycles. I wish they would have communicated that to me and allowed me to stay on meds and re-test 2 days later rather than stopping all meds and re-test a week later.
Dr. Harris is very warm and has made me feel very comfortable. He responds immediately to emails and answers all of my questions. However, there are times when I'm directed to speak to someone else in Dr. Harris' staff rather than Dr. Harris himself...I have seen Dr. Harris for our initial consult and for my saline sonogram. He answers his emails promptly and gives me next steps and reassurance when needed.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Ask a lot of questions and have Dr. Harris explain what is happening and what is going to happen to your body. It will save you the research time later and he is thorough and easy to understand.

Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente NorCal and their degree of success.
I did 3 rounds of Femara with Menopur injectables, along with HCG trigger shot and IUI. All 3 cycles resulted in negative pregnancy tests. One cycle was cancelled due to too many follicles and the staff feared that I would have OHSS.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
The nurses were kind and warm, and I had the genuine feeling that they were "on my side." However, there was a large team of them, and I had different nurses rotating through my different appointments.
The nurses didn't know me personally and they didn't seem to communicate among one another. There were times when I had to update nurses on what had happened during my previous cycle, or even my previous appointment (which often was just a few days before).

Dr. Nixon made me very uncomfortable. He talked about his personal life a lot and didn't give me or my husband clear answers. After my initial appointment with him for infertility, I never saw him again.
Dr. Harris has been very kind, knowledgeable, and thorough. He has a warm bedside manner. He answers questions promptly via email. I met with him for our initial IVF consult and he performed my saline sonogram and mock transfer. When I begin STIMming, I will see him for every appointment.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
I was often there when the nurses were putting in my prescription, but when I arrived at the pharmacy, it had not been received. This could be an error on Kaiser's end as a whole, not necessarily at the REI clinic.
Dr Harris always had a smile for me and/or my husband, but was also sympathetic to setbacks and disappointments. He was appropriately physical, like a pat on the hand prior to draining a cyst or polypectomy. He even gave me a [well-received and appreciated] hug when I started crying after learning about an ovarian cyst.
Two of the 3 NPs [at Kaiser Sunnyvale] were wonderful - compassionate, open, empathetic. One was a bit more clinical and the one that told me, without hesitation or apology, to stop taking progesterone when it was discovered that the short-lived pregnancy was ending.... Most of the clinic's support staff - front desk and back desk - were excellent. They were compassionate and caring, offering a cup of water and early check-in when my emotions got the better of me. Even when I often ran late, due to traffic or emotional delay, they accommodated me.

He was friendly every time, as well as compassionate, never cold or "clinical".
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente NorCal and their degree of success.
Because of both male factor infertility (high abnormality) and diminished ovarian reserve, we started immediately with IUIs. They were delayed due to an occlusive ovarian cyst, about the size of a large kiwi. It was first treated with birth control, then with 2 different drainings, and finally a cystectomy. The cyst remains.
We were told early on that IVF would be more successful, and that using donor eggs would provide still higher chances of success. Due to emotional and financial stress, we decided to try 7 IUIs over 2 years, interspersed with other procedures like a polypectomy and cyst-related procedures.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
One of the NPs failed to call in the prescription for my first cycle with injectables. Another time, an NP, while covering for my regular NPs, failed to inform me of test results, but responded to my email the same day.
Dr. Harris is an amazing doctor. He always made me feel like he actually cared about my results personally, not that I was just another patient ...The first embryo retrieval, Dr. Harris did not use an HcG trigger because of the number of eggs that I was likely to release, and the worry of hyperstimulation. However, the injection I did take did not release the eggs as expected (and this is not a normal thing to happen; 99% of the time this works), and so that cycle was basically a wash. Dr. Harris changed the protocol for the next cycle, doing an HcG trigger instead, which worked fine.
I love Nurse Colombo (and everyone in the office [Kaiser]). I know they see a lot of unhappy people all day as that's the nature of the job, and they always managed to be kind and nice to me even at my worst...There was one instance where I was not informed of a cancelled appointment because my doctor was not in the office that day...I do wish I hadn't done as many IUIs as we did and had gone straight to IVF; however, I don't think that's the fault of the clinic since I think it's standard protocol.

I love Dr. Harris. He is one of the best doctors I have ever had. He helped me through an extremely difficult time in a way that was always kind and compassionate, even when I was neither of those things. I feel that he went way above and beyond his job for my husband and me.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Ask all questions that you have. Always think of questions beforehand and come with a list. Dr. Harris does a great job of explaining everything but he's not a mind reader, of course.

Dr. Harris is an amazing doctor. He always made me feel like he actually cared about my results personally, not that I was just another patient (though I do think he actually cares about all his patients, not just me!). I cried a lot in his office and he was always extremely kind and sympathetic to my situation, and never gave up hope even when I had almost given up myself.

Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
I am glad we did the eSET, even though the first two transfers did not take. It was probably the only way we could have afforded as many transfers as we did.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
There was one instance where I was not informed of a cancelled appointment because my doctor was not in the office that day. However, it was not a critically time sensitive appointment, just a mid-cycle ultrasound.
Despite (or perhaps because of) being newer to the field than the other doctors in the office, Dr. Harris was extremely thorough and made the entire process manageable and transparent, reassuring us every step of the way and giving honest and candid advice...Retrieved 7 eggs, 3 fertilized, all 3 embryos transferred. Dr. Harris told us it was unlikely we'd have triplets, but good chance we'd have twins. Positive pregnancy test, and now we have twin boys!..He remembered details about our personal lives and would ask us about them from time to time.
My care coordinator [at Kaiser Permanente] was friendly and bubbly. Sometimes seemed frazzled but ultimately I got the information I needed from her in a timely manner. She gave me really helpful color coded calendars and called to remind me about each step in the process. I saw nurses for all my medicated IUI tranfers, and all of them were warm, kind, and professional...They knew me by name, gave me great advice for dealing with insurance, and were always optimistic and sympathetic during my failed attempts.
How was your experience with Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Dr. Harris is one of the most warm and friendly doctors I have ever had. Going into this process, my husband and I were anxious, desperate, and uninformed. Dr. Harris seemed a bit young when we first met him, and didn't seem to have tons of experience. However, after reading some of his past research papers and obviously from the detailed nature of our conversations, my concern proved to be unfounded. I feel extremely fortunate that we got Dr. Harris as our doctor (though our first choice didn't have availability to see us as early as we would have liked). Despite (or perhaps because of) being newer to the field than the other doctors in the office, Dr. Harris was extremely thorough and made the entire process manageable and transparent, reassuring us every step of the way and giving honest and candid advice. After our 2nd IVF cycle, we were blessed with twins. My husband and I tried for a 3rd last summer, unfortunately with another doctor since he had different insurance coverage, and I wished we could have gone back to Dr. Harris for that attempt.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Don't be afraid to ask questions - and make sure to tell him about all supplements you're taking and whether that interferes with any of the medication. Also, just a piece of general advice with any provider - make sure you ask your insurance company what medications they do or don't cover. Dr. Harris prescribed Follistim, which wasn't initially covered by my insurance. After almost a year of painful interactions with my insurance company (and having Dr. Harris write 2 letters), we were finally reimbursed for the medication, which we had to pay for out of pocket. Double check to make sure you get pre-authorization of procedures and meds once Dr. Harris tells you your protocol.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isiah Harris at Kaiser Permanente NorCal?
Dr. Harris was warm and friendly right from the start. He encouraged all of our questions and took the time to patiently explain all the steps in the process, never making us feel rushed and always giving us his full attention. He remembered details about our personal lives and would ask us about them from time to time. His bedside manner is outstanding.
Describe the protocols Isiah Harris used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente NorCal and their degree of success.
3 cycles of Clomid + IUI, 2 to 3 follicles each round, negative pregnancy tests.
1 cycle of Femara + IUI, 3 follicles, negative pregnancy test.
1st round of IVF after 1 month priming with birth control. Antagonist protocol (Follistim and Menopur to stimulate egg growth, Ganirelix to suppress growth for larger follicles). Retrieved 8 eggs, 4 fertilized. Transferred 2 embryos on Day 3, chemical pregnancy. The other 2 embryos did not survive until Day 5.
2nd round of IVF with 3 months priming with birth control (more because we had to wait until Dr. Harris had an available slot for this second round). Antagonist protocol with slightly increased dosage of Follistim and Menopur. Retrieved 7 eggs, 3 fertilized, all 3 embryos transferred. Dr. Harris told us it was unlikely we'd have triplets, but good chance we'd have twins. Positive pregnancy test, and now we have twin boys!

Describe Isiah Harris's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kaiser Permanente NorCal.
Dr. Harris advocated for transfer of 2 embryos the first round of IVF, and 3 embryos the 2nd (successful) round of IVF. On the 2nd round, we had 3 viable embryos on Day 3. The embryologist said she'd probably transfer 2, while Dr. Harris asked us how we would feel about multiples. After we said we'd be fine with twins, he recommended transferring all 3 embryos, saying there was a small likelihood we'd have triplets, but good chance we'd have twins. And as Dr. Harris described, I was relatively young and healthy enough (no major medical issues or history of family illnesses) to carry multiples if that's something we were comfortable with. He said he'd feel better about us having twins than no kids at all, the latter being more likely if we transferred only 2 embryos that failed and the remaining one didn't make it to Day 5. Both cycles had Day 3 transfers since there were not many embryos in either cycle. I know many doctors like to wait until Day 5 and perform frozen embryo transfers, but I like that Dr. Harris was willing to do Day 3, as he believed that there was a better chance of the embryos surviving in the uterus than outside, especially since there weren't many to begin with. Whether this is true or not, I liked having the choice, as I have several friends who weren't given the choice for Day 3 transfer at all, and had to adhere to their clinic policy of transferring on Day 5, or FET of blastocysts.
Doctor Harris was upbeat, positive and just an all around lovely human being. Our insurance covered it the first time. After losing that insurance we paid 6k for the embryo transfer on our 2nd pregnancy.
Dr. Harris always took the time to fully explain my options and the treatment plan that he thought was best. Sometimes it felt like a like a lot of information, but he would take the time necessary to make it as simple as possible for me. ... Dr. H is incredibly kind, compassionate and knowledgeable. As busy as he was (I think he had 30 other IVF patients the same week he took care of us) he was always patient and cheerful to be around. I can't say how appreciative and fortunate I am for all that he did for us.
I had a great experience with the nursing team and all the points of contact at Spring Fertility. ... The clinic is very well organized, and modern. the lab appears very high tech. Everyone we met was very friendly and genuine ... Dr. Harris is a great guy and a good doctor. He is up to date on all of the new technologies and will clearly communicate with you about where you stand and what should happen next. After several cycles failed, he recommended us to get a second opinion before moving on to a new cycle because he wanted to make sure he wasn't missing anything...he has such good bedside manners. Always welcomes you with a smile, lets you ask any questions you might have and takes the time to answer them thoroughly in a pleasant but direct way
Amazing staff. They always made sure I was comfortable and were very patient...An IVF cycle costs about 11,000. For ICSI we paid an extra 2,000 or so. Medications were around 3,000...Strengths: very clean and well organized. The staff is very nice and professional Weaknesses: there were procedures that were not covered by them such as pipelle or IMSI...After several cycles failed, he [Dr. Harris] recommended us to get a second opinion before moving on to a new cycle because he wanted to make sure he wasn't missing anything.
