How was your experience with James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Dr. James Stelling is very thorough with all the information he is relaying to you. I see some comments on this site that complain of his bedside manner.. yes he speaks faster than normal and tries to lighten the seriousness of the meetings with jokes here and there but that is him as a human. Can't fault him for that. He makes sure he is clear with the course of treatment at every appointment a tasks for our comfortability level and thoughts on the course of treatment. He is wonderful. 10/10 recommend. out of all the doctors at the Commack office I would recommend Dr. Stelling each time.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?
He speaks fast thats just him. Listen to everything he says because he is saying it for a reason, and is answering the questions you're thinking about before you even voice them!

Dr.Stelling liked to joke and would mumble through treatment and any answers we had questions to, but didn't explain in great detail and would just be as vague as possible and pushed it along. He also would say things such as how insemination and intercourse isn't much different, later changing to tell us that insemination is definitely better. He also make it sound like a choice, and never informed us that they could both be done. When my wife asked about a pain she felt, he quickly brushed it off and didn't explain what it could be...
the greatest weakness [of Island Fertility] is lack of communication in any way for everything with patients, what tests you're taking, explaining the results, etc...When we saw nurses (and we still don't know if we had a specific nurse or not) they only explained that we needed another appointment and quickly left the room if we didn't stop and force them to answer what the last blood test was for or what's going on. As stated before, Dr.Stelling liked to joke and would mumble through treatment and any answers we had questions to, but didn't explain in great detail and would just be as vague as possible and pushed it along. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Joke less, explain more. Give the steps needed in detail to patients asking. If a patient is looking for the best success rate, give that information honestly and openly, don't wait until a patient spends 2k (as we did) or more then asks about it before saying it's more successful or you can do both. The goal is to create life, not joke about how you "got your sister pregnant, but I'm not from west virginia", Focus on giving all the information needed for patients first.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Never given explanations in any detail as to what tests were for, never told what to do to improve diet/health for fertility, semen results were never explained at all even after being asked, never told about the trigger shot, what it was or what it was for, only told to order it and then told about it on the day of ovulation by another doctor. When asking medical questions, never given any explanations in any detail. The doctor joked more than provided actual medical info. The front desk was extremely mean and rude to us, we were never informed at what appointments to make and then the check out woman would have a mean attitude when we told her we didn't know. Nurses almost never explained what blood tests were for or what was happening, only that we needed to make another appointment. Dr.Stelling told us that there isn't much of a difference between insemination or intercourse, then after timed intercourse failed he changed to say that insemination was definitely better. We would show up never knowing what we were there for until the moment they drew blood and we had to ask clearly. It was an extremely stressful and horrible experience from the beginning when they treated us as though we knew everything already. .
Describe the protocols James Stelling used in your cycles at Island Fertility and their degree of success.
I really couldn't say in any detail since he never went into depth about it and just quickly brushed past it all as though he was explaining something we already knew and had to say it fast.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Island Fertility.
When we saw nurses (and we still don't know if we had a specific nurse or not) they only explained that we needed another appointment and quickly left the room if we didn't stop and force them to answer what the last blood test was for or what's going on. Only once did we see a NP and she broadly went over a couple of things, but we didn't see her again and it was short and basic enough.
Describe your experience with Island Fertility.
I can't see many strengths at all to be honest. Weaknesses are far too many to write here, primarily the greatest weakness is lack of communication in any way for everything with patients, what tests you're taking, explaining the results, etc. And it would be nice if people didn't have a dismissive attitude, but what's more important of all is communicating with patients about their care clearly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at Island Fertility.
Unknown at this point for the first month since it was covered by insurance. Once fertility care began they charged $2100 for each cycle with 6 visits, whether or not we got to see him. We were not able to schedule an appointment with him and were told to just ask to see him if we were there.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Island Fertility.
I have stated earlier that protocols and tests were never explained, sometimes in depth, sometimes not at all which affected our personal actions for a successful outcome.
Dr. Stelling is extremely knowledgable and very patient. He has no problem answering as many questions as you have and explains things thoroughly. He does not have a big ego and therefore has no problem with you questioning your treatment plan. If I had any urgent needs he would always respond quickly to me via phone call or email. Throughout my process he has always been kind, reassuring, positive and empathetic...

Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at Island Fertility.
Our insurance covered most of the expenses. I had copays for every visit and the medications. Also paid out of pocket for PGT testing which was around $5,000.
Describe James Stelling's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Island Fertility.
Dr. Stelling encourages younger patients with no history of re-occuring loss to do single embryo transfers which is what I did. He explained it is recommended for the the health and safety of mom and baby. He does multiple embryo transfers based on specific medical criteria/age.
What specific things went wrong at Island Fertility?
Dr. Stelling made sure to discuss my case with me, not general protocols or treatments. The visits felt tailored to my specific situation and goals...managed by medical care as well as my expectations and fears. He might talk faster than any doctor I've had before, but was always willing to slow down and explain again if asked. Our numbers didn't look great on paper and we knew from the start what we might be facing, but things worked out faster and better than expected
There was issues along the way [at Island Fertility] with the office providing accurate information about my coverage. This resulted in quite a bit of extra stress on multiple occasions. I spoke to the practice manager, who seemed understanding and promised resolution, but there was no follow through there. This does not to me take away from the care, but something to keep in mind that you are largely on your own to figure it all out.
How was your experience with James Stelling at Island Fertility?
We had our consultation with Dr. Stelling via telemedicine, as it was in the middle of the early pandemic. He spent 50+ minutes with me and my husband that day and when the call ended my husband the skeptic said "he's our guy!" I felt that way after each visit. Through the ups and the downs of the process, Dr. Stelling managed by medical care as well as my expectations and fears. He might talk faster than any doctor I've had before, but was always willing to slow down and explain again if asked. Our numbers didn't look great on paper and we knew from the start what we might be facing, but things worked out faster and better than expected. After one round of IVF I'm currently 15 weeks with a healthy baby boy. Incredibly grateful to Dr. Stelling for making this dream a reality for us.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Don't hesitate to ask him to repeat himself, he doesn't ever seem to mind. It's more important to understand.

OCP, Menopur 150 and Gonal 300 6 days, add Cetrotide 5 days, just Cetrotide last day, then HCG if I remember correctly.

He [Dr. Stelling] spoke quickly and it was hard to catch everything he said at times, but he was willing to answer questions and review information. He was not the doctor who performed the actual retrieval, and I would have preferred knowing this further in advance rather than just before the retrieval. I appreciated that he was honest when assessing the results and acknowledged that it was not what he had expected when going into the retrieval.
The clinic [Long Island IVF] can be very busy. Most often I had a minimal waiting time but a few times it was upwards of 30 minutes. Overall, the staff was the best part of this clinic. The nurses remember very patient and show great empathy. I felt like I mattered.... They took time to answer questions and return calls. I felt very comfortable asking for help and speaking to them about the process.... In the beginning I had great difficulty getting the initial blood work I needed.

Although he spoke quickly, he took time to answer questions and had a decent bedside manner. He was honest when going over the results and I didn’t feel like he was trying to backtrack when the results weren’t as expected. He offered ideas for the second round.
Describe the protocols James Stelling used in your cycles at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York and their degree of success.
I was prescribed 300 units Follistim and 300 Menopur. I was on the injections for about 13 days because the follicles weren’t reacting as quickly as expected. I ended up with 17 follicles , 13 eggs retrieved, 6 were mature and 6 made it through the freezing process.

These went smoothly and the office was well run. I was usually seen close to my scheduled time, and except for one instance, there was no more than a 30 minute wait. The visits were quick and efficient.
Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
It was roughly $4000 (just under) all included, except for medicines and copays. The drugs were separate but were covered by my insurance. Each visit requires my insurance’s copay. Ultimately this was probably about another $450-$500. This price included two months of freezing. After the two months it is $390 for 6 months.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
In the beginning I had great difficulty getting the initial blood work I needed. The clinic told me to get certain tests at my PCP, but the PCP refused to order them. My PCP was the primary problem, but the miscommunication with the clinic and the back and forth calls with both doctors took several hours to resolve. Ultimately the tests were done in house at the clinic and I paid for them. Also when it came time to pay for the procedure, the computer system had different iformation than what had been provided in writing by the financial counselor. It was resolved fairly quickly but I ended up having to go back and pay a different day while they sorted it out. Since the treatment was finished, this was a completely separate extra trip that would have otherwise been unnecessary.
He [Dr. James Stelling] likes to transfer 1 embryo for young patients, but we could convince him to do 2...I felt mostly like a number when I had appts with Dr. Stelling. I always felt like he rushed my appts and didn't really take the time to listen to my concerns... Dr. Stelling did not review our charts before the consult which was concerning to us. He made some jokes that a lot of people would find offensive such as "if your husband had sex with a 19 year old he would probably get her pregnant"
The nurses are absolutely amazing at this clinic [Reproductive Specialists of New York]! They treat you like you are a part of their family...Dr. Stelling has recently left the practice with another doctor to start their own clinic. Because of this, they have been very understaffed and I have to wait at least 45 mins for my appts. They did not notify any of his patients that he had left, which caused a lot of stress.
How was your experience with James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
Dr. Stelling talks veryyyyyy fast. It's hard to keep up. I was referred to him from my OBGYN who diagnosed us with male factor infertility. Dr. Stelling did not review our charts before the consult which was concerning to us. He made some jokes that a lot of people would find offensive such as "if your husband had sex with a 19 year old he would probably get her pregnant" He told us that he likes an aggressive approach because he wants to get his patients pregnant asap. He wanted us to do 3 IUIs before moving onto IVF when other doctors would want to do 4-5 IUIs.

He wanted to do 3 medicated IUIs first. I ended up having a chemical pregnancy from my second IUI, so he wanted to "reset the clock" and do an additional 3 more IUIs. We did 2 more cycles which failed, so we told him we were ready to move on to IVF.

He was just not a good talker per se. He explained everything but you had to have it repeated because he spoke way too fast...He spoke sincerely to you and straight forward... I wanted to be more aggressive but he was always safe.
[The nurses at Reproductive Specialists of New York are] So loving and helpful. When I didn’t understand they would try to explain things. They always were around and remembered your name. I actually miss the attention they gave...Waiting room could have been more cheerful. Also referrals for support groups and more information for those of us doing things alone. I felt alone during this process. The clinic was nice but once you left you were on your own. When I went to another clinic they didn’t help with getting me my records. I had to pay a lot of money just to get my own records. I was very frustrated.

I’ve blocked a lot of things after the fact so I don’t remember. I know we tried clomid with IUI. I also know we did GonalF and other drugs with IVF. We also did the birth control pill with hormones after but i don’t remember the protocol. I wanted to be more aggressive but he was always safe.

I did run up some bills but I managed. My insurance covered 3 cycles of IVF but only 75% and an indefinite amount of IUI. I still had to pay for blood work and visits but I’m still paying off the debt accumulated because of additional costs and medicine.
Describe James Stelling's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
He was open to transfer as many eggs but I just didn’t produce them or they never fertilized.
Although he [Dr. James Stelling] speaks very fast, once you get used to his speed he is quite humorous which put me at ease. Also, on the day we discovered I had had my first miscarriage, he was very comforting. In fact the whole office put my needs first that day. Months later when I was there [at Reproductive Specialists of New York] for another appointment I realized I was waiting much longer than usual. I could sense that another woman was experiencing what I had and now it was her turn to take priority in the office.

With my initial blood work Dr. Stelling started me on thyroid meds for hypothyroidism and Vitamin D for a deficiency. My first four tries were IUIs, each with an HCG trigger shot. After the 4th failed attempt we added Clomid pills which increased the number of follicles and led to pregnancies each time. Try 4 and 5 resulted in miscarriages. After the second miscarriage Dr. Stelling ordered a slue of blood work which revealed I had a slightly elevated clotting factor that may have been causing the miscarriages. So with the 7th try (third pregnancy) I began taking a low dose aspirin daily. That is why my daughter's nick name is Lucky Seven. :-)

Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
My insurance paid for all the medical expenses. I paid about $1000 a try for the donor sperm.
Dr stelling made me very comfortable talking about my infertility issues. We came up with a game plan together for my particular situation due to my husband religious beliefs. Dr stelling never tried to push any treatment I was not comfortable with. Even though we were not successful with a pregnancy, I don’t feel it was Anything dr stelling did or did not do.... Be prepared for him to be upfront with you and enjoy a good laugh. He is great at making you feel comfortable from the very first visit.
The nursing staff [Reproductive Specialists of New York] treated you with compassion and patience.... Sometimes you could be waiting up to 45 minutes to see the dr during busy morning monitoring. Which was really hard especially being a patient with a full time job to get to. Other than that anytime I had a question the nurses responded very quickly. I was always able to get an appointment when needed. The sonography technicians were pleasant and gentle. The office and exam rooms were very clean.

Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
My insurance covered most of my infertility services.
He was personable and understanding of the fact that we're "not millionaires" ready to jump to the most expensive forms of treatment. However, he was just as understanding when we were emotionally spent and worked with us. He was the fourth and final doctor we saw and cannot say enough about him.
Our first embryos were lost due to bacterial contamination that they couldn't explain. But they did not charge us for our second cycle and took extra precautions which resulted in a successful cycle... My care team was so caring, personable and overall amazing.

We have since moved out of state but will be traveling back to Dr. Stelling for our next cycle as opposed to finding a new doctor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
He tells it like it is. He'll use the word "boobs" and tell you and your spouse that he understands you're probably sick of having sex. It may not sound professional to some but it lightens the mood and really creates a more personable and comfortable atmosphere.

Our first embryos were lost due to bacterial contamination that they couldn't explain. But they did not charge us for our second cycle and took extra precautions which resulted in a successful cycle.
He [Dr James Stelling] is an intelligent man but looking back he didn't have a great bedside manner and sometimes you hardly saw him and another doctor within the practice was dealing with your case...His strategy was to get me pregnant. I ended up with OHSS and had to delay my transfer. Then I had two frozen medicated transfers and they both failed. I also had a uterine biopsy which was the worst experience of my life. I just felt that although he seemed to have an idea of what To do with me, nothing he actually did was successful.
Depending on who was working that day was the doctor you saw, it didn't matter who started to give you a treatment plan. There were times I questioned whether they spoke to each other about what they were suggesting...Love the nursing staff [at Reproductive Specialists of New York] so much! I cried when I decided to leave them...He [Dr James Stelling] is an intelligent man but looking back he didn't have a great bedside manner and sometimes you hardly saw him and another doctor within the practice was dealing with your case.

The nurse and staff who are actually no longer with RSOFNY were kind and made me feel extremely comfortable given an uncomfortable situation . Dr Stelling and his staff moved to his new office for his new practice and j was very happy to see all of my old nurses as well as him ... Listen very carefully , he speaks very fast ... He takes the time to thoroughly explain the process and makes recvomendations based on your health history
I wasn’t a fan of the clinic [Reproductive Specialists of New York] itself , but the doctors are no longer at that location , they left and started their own ; to me the office felt way to factory like , it needed to be a little more cherry and uplifting ... Only once my clomid was never called into to my pharmacy and my office In West Islip closed early , I called over to minneola and they resolved the issue within a half hour .
