Dr. James Stelling is very thorough with all the information he is relaying to you. I see some comments on this site that complain of his bedside manner.. yes he speaks faster than normal and tries to lighten the seriousness of the meetings with jokes here and there but that is him as a human. Can't fault him for that. He makes sure he is clear with the course of treatment at every appointment a tasks for our comfortability level and thoughts on the course of treatment. He is wonderful. 10/10 recommend. out of all the doctors at the Commack office I would recommend Dr. Stelling each time.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?

He speaks fast thats just him. Listen to everything he says because he is saying it for a reason, and is answering the questions you're thinking about before you even voice them!

He also would say things such as how insemination and intercourse isn't much different, later changing to tell us that insemination is definitely better. He also make it sound like a choice, and never informed us that they could both be done. When my wife asked about a pain she felt, he quickly brushed it off and didn't explain what it could be...

the greatest weakness [of Island Fertility] is lack of communication in any way for everything with patients, what tests you're taking, explaining the results, etc...When we saw nurses (and we still don't know if we had a specific nurse or not) they only explained that we needed another appointment and quickly left the room if we didn't stop and force them to answer what the last blood test was for or what's going on. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?

Joke less, explain more. Give the steps needed in detail to patients asking. If a patient is looking for the best success rate, give that information honestly and openly, don't wait until a patient spends 2k (as we did) or more then asks about it before saying it's more successful or you can do both. The goal is to create life, not joke about how you "got your sister pregnant, but I'm not from west virginia", Focus on giving all the information needed for patients first.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Stelling at Island Fertility?

Never given explanations in any detail as to what tests were for, never told what to do to improve diet/health for fertility, semen results were never explained at all even after being asked, never told about the trigger shot, what it was or what it was for, only told to order it and then told about it on the day of ovulation by another doctor. When asking medical questions, never given any explanations in any detail. The doctor joked more than provided actual medical info. The front desk was extremely mean and rude to us, we were never informed at what appointments to make and then the check out woman would have a mean attitude when we told her we didn't know. Nurses almost never explained what blood tests were for or what was happening, only that we needed to make another appointment. Dr.Stelling told us that there isn't much of a difference between insemination or intercourse, then after timed intercourse failed he changed to say that insemination was definitely better. We would show up never knowing what we were there for until the moment they drew blood and we had to ask clearly. It was an extremely stressful and horrible experience from the beginning when they treated us as though we knew everything already. .

I really couldn't say in any detail since he never went into depth about it and just quickly brushed past it all as though he was explaining something we already knew and had to say it fast.

I can't see many strengths at all to be honest. Weaknesses are far too many to write here, primarily the greatest weakness is lack of communication in any way for everything with patients, what tests you're taking, explaining the results, etc. And it would be nice if people didn't have a dismissive attitude, but what's more important of all is communicating with patients about their care clearly.

Unknown at this point for the first month since it was covered by insurance. Once fertility care began they charged $2100 for each cycle with 6 visits, whether or not we got to see him. We were not able to schedule an appointment with him and were told to just ask to see him if we were there.

Through the ups and the downs of the process, Dr. Stelling managed by medical care as well as my expectations and fears. He might talk faster than any doctor I've had before, but was always willing to slow down and explain again if asked. Our numbers didn't look great on paper and we knew from the start what we might be facing, but things worked out faster and better than expected. After one round of IVF I'm currently 15 weeks with a healthy baby boy. Incredibly grateful to Dr. Stelling for making this dream a reality for us.

Although he spoke quickly, he took time to answer questions and had a decent bedside manner. He was honest when going over the results and I didn’t feel like he was trying to backtrack when the results weren’t as expected. He offered ideas for the second round.

I was prescribed 300 units Follistim and 300 Menopur. I was on the injections for about 13 days because the follicles weren’t reacting as quickly as expected. I ended up with 17 follicles , 13 eggs retrieved, 6 were mature and 6 made it through the freezing process.

It was roughly $4000 (just under) all included, except for medicines and copays. The drugs were separate but were covered by my insurance. Each visit requires my insurance’s copay. Ultimately this was probably about another $450-$500. This price included two months of freezing. After the two months it is $390 for 6 months.

In the beginning I had great difficulty getting the initial blood work I needed. The clinic told me to get certain tests at my PCP, but the PCP refused to order them. My PCP was the primary problem, but the miscommunication with the clinic and the back and forth calls with both doctors took several hours to resolve. Ultimately the tests were done in house at the clinic and I paid for them. Also when it came time to pay for the procedure, the computer system had different iformation than what had been provided in writing by the financial counselor. It was resolved fairly quickly but I ended up having to go back and pay a different day while they sorted it out. Since the treatment was finished, this was a completely separate extra trip that would have otherwise been unnecessary.

Dr. Stelling talks veryyyyyy fast. It's hard to keep up. I was referred to him from my OBGYN who diagnosed us with male factor infertility. Dr. Stelling did not review our charts before the consult which was concerning to us. He made some jokes that a lot of people would find offensive such as "if your husband had sex with a 19 year old he would probably get her pregnant" He told us that he likes an aggressive approach because he wants to get his patients pregnant asap. He wanted us to do 3 IUIs before moving onto IVF when other doctors would want to do 4-5 IUIs.

I felt mostly like a number when I had appts with Dr. Stelling. I always felt like he rushed my appts and didn't really take the time to listen to my concerns.

He wanted to do 3 medicated IUIs first. I ended up having a chemical pregnancy from my second IUI, so he wanted to "reset the clock" and do an additional 3 more IUIs. We did 2 more cycles which failed, so we told him we were ready to move on to IVF.

I’ve blocked a lot of things after the fact so I don’t remember. I know we tried clomid with IUI. I also know we did GonalF and other drugs with IVF. We also did the birth control pill with hormones after but i don’t remember the protocol. I wanted to be more aggressive but he was always safe.

Although he [Dr. James Stelling] speaks very fast, once you get used to his speed he is quite humorous which put me at ease. Dr. Stelling is hard to read at first but that is mostly because he speaks VERY fast. Once you catch on to his speed he is very thorough, and quite humorous. If I wanted to have another child I would definitely use him again.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?

Don't be afraid to ask him to repeat himself.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Stelling at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?

With my initial blood work Dr. Stelling started me on thyroid meds for hypothyroidism and Vitamin D for a deficiency. My first four tries were IUIs, each with an HCG trigger shot. After the 4th failed attempt we added Clomid pills which increased the number of follicles and led to pregnancies each time. Try 4 and 5 resulted in miscarriages. After the second miscarriage Dr. Stelling ordered a slue of blood work which revealed I had a slightly elevated clotting factor that may have been causing the miscarriages. So with the 7th try (third pregnancy) I began taking a low dose aspirin daily. That is why my daughter's nick name is Lucky Seven. :-)

Every staff member in the office was amazing! Loving, caring, sympathetic. In my opinion the staff is more important than the doctor. You will be spending much more time with them and these ladies made me feel at home.

From reception, to blood draws, to scans, to shots, to information shared and explained these woman are amazing.

Dr stelling made me very comfortable talking about my infertility issues. We came up with a game plan together for my particular situation due to my husband religious beliefs. Dr stelling never tried to push any treatment I was not comfortable with. Even though we were not successful with a pregnancy, I don’t feel it was Anything dr stelling did or did not do.... Be prepared for him to be upfront with you and enjoy a good laugh. He is great at making you feel comfortable from the very first visit.

The nursing staff [Reproductive Specialists of New York] treated you with compassion and patience.... Sometimes you could be waiting up to 45 minutes to see the dr during busy morning monitoring. Which was really hard especially being a patient with a full time job to get to. Other than that anytime I had a question the nurses responded very quickly. I was always able to get an appointment when needed. The sonography technicians were pleasant and gentle. The office and exam rooms were very clean.

I never felt like a number. Each visit was very informative and warm even with the large number of patients waiting to be seen.

First cycle was clomid with timed intercourse. Second cycle was clomid with iui. Third cycle was clomid with iui.

The office and exam rooms were very clean.

He was personable and understanding of the fact that we're "not millionaires" ready to jump to the most expensive forms of treatment. However, he was just as understanding when we were emotionally spent and worked with us. He was the fourth and final doctor we saw and cannot say enough about him.

Our first embryos were lost due to bacterial contamination that they couldn't explain. But they did not charge us for our second cycle and took extra precautions which resulted in a successful cycle... My care team was so caring, personable and overall amazing.

My husband and I both left Dr. Stelling's office smiling after our first consultation with him. He was personable and understanding of the fact that we're "not millionaires" ready to jump to the most expensive forms of treatment. We have since moved out of state but will be traveling back to Dr. Stelling for our next cycle as opposed to finding a new doctor.

He tells it like it is. He'll use the word "boobs" and tell you and your spouse that he understands you're probably sick of having sex. It may not sound professional to some but it lightens the mood and really creates a more personable and comfortable atmosphere.

My care team was so caring, personable and overall amazing. When our pregnancy test came back positive I got hugs from all the nurses. They were genuinely happy and excited for us.

He [Dr James Stelling] is an intelligent man but looking back he didn't have a great bedside manner and sometimes you hardly saw him and another doctor within the practice was dealing with your case...His strategy was to get me pregnant. I ended up with OHSS and had to delay my transfer. Then I had two frozen medicated transfers and they both failed. I also had a uterine biopsy which was the worst experience of my life. I just felt that although he seemed to have an idea of what To do with me, nothing he actually did was successful.

Depending on who was working that day was the doctor you saw, it didn't matter who started to give you a treatment plan. There were times I questioned whether they spoke to each other about what they were suggesting...Love the nursing staff [at Reproductive Specialists of New York] so much! Dr Stelling and his staff moved to his new office for his new practice and j was very happy to see all of my old nurses as well as him ... Listen very carefully , he speaks very fast ...
