I'm out of state (I live in NC) and feel more connected to Dr. O'Brien than I ever did the doctor I worked with close to home. She's incredibly generous with her time and perspective. After my first transfer failed, she called me and we spoke for 20 mins. After the second failed and another retrieval was needed, she did the same. She was patient and answered my many (many) questions. I've had a lot of complications and challenges - a canceled cycle, DOR, slow response to meds, I can't follow the normal FET protocol (allergic to PIO), my lining doesn't thicken as it should.
We were hoping for 8 eggs but only got 4 [at Shady Grove Fertility]. Lucky for me, 3 fertilized and became AA embryos. One has been transfered (fresh) and resulted in chemical pregnancy. The other two were PGS tested and are normal...Shawn [nurse] has been amazing. I live out of state and she's patient and helpful with ensuring my orders are sent to clinics when I need to monitor and letting me know if results aren't in yet, etc. She's very attentive and answers all of my (many) questions promptly. She delivers bad news with compassion and shows genuine excitement with good news. For instance, when she called to tell me my two embryos were PGS normal, I think she was as happy as I was! You can't fake that. I'm grateful to her - she helps keep me sane in this mess of a process.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
I gush about Dr. O'Brien every chance I get - and I don't have a baby yet! She's a wonderful doctor. She's generous with her time and knowledge, she's innovative and persistent. She's also very honest and open with sharing her thought process. She advocates for her patients. On many occasions, I've been in for monitoring and end up getting a surprise visit. When my first retrieval attempt canceled, she came in and told me herself - and helped me feel ok about it. The next time around, I saw her in the hall and she pulled up my results to review them with me in real-time. She's taken time out of her day to call me to discuss next steps (answering all of my questions for 20+ minutes!) and never makes me feel like I'm not important. She's even emailed me with updates or to let me know she'd call at a certain time. I feel so lucky to have found her!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Don't be afraid to ask questions - she'll answer thoughtfully and thoroughly! She is very transparent so that does mean she shares a lot of information and detail. The first time I spoke with her (phone consult) it was a little overwhelming but now that I know her and her style, I greatly appreciate that.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. O'Brien is the second doctor I've worked with. With the first, I felt like a number. I was worried that might be the case at Shady Grove as well given the size of the clinic. It couldn't be more untrue! She is innovative and unflappable. She always has a solve to help us get past the hurdle. I truly believe she wants me to be pregnant almost as badly as I do. Her belief in me and in our cause helps keep me going when I struggle to believe it myself. She's straight forward, honest, caring and persistent. With her on my side, I have hope that this will work. (And now I'm crying!)
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Retrieval attempt 1 - microflare. I took microdose Lupron for several days and then added in Gonal-F and Menopur. With only three follicles leading, she decided to cancel because she felt my ovaries could do better.
Retrieval 1 - estrogen priming. This started with estrogen patches for several days. I added other meds later (forget the details!) and then Gonal-F and Menopur. The doses were pretty high, especially of Menopur. Towards the end I was taking 5 vials! Also added in Cetrotide to help extend the cycle and allow more follicles to grow. I ultimately had 6 retrieved, 4 mature.
Retrieval 2- microflare - after the first cancellation on this protocol, she lowered the microdose lupron dose to ensure my follicles didn't grow too fast. This also allowed for lower doses of Gonal-F and Menopur. We were hoping for 8 eggs but only got 4. Lucky for me, 3 fertilized and became AA embryos. One has been transfered (fresh) and resulted in chemical pregnancy. The other two were PGS tested and are normal.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Shawn Thompson)
All of the nurses at Shady Grove are fantastic. Shawn has been amazing.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
Shady Grove is massive and I worried I'd be just a number with them. It's not the case. The entire staff is compassionate, helpful and caring. I also believe their size allows them to be cutting edge and have vast experience and expertise. Nothing seems to surprise them - probably because they see it all. I also love that they have a Wellness Center onsite with acupuncture!
I participate in the Shared Risk program which gives me peace of mind. It's a wonderful option and is not something I've seen available at many other places.
An exception to my high praise is the billing department. To be clear, I don't mean the financial counselors - April Jackson was wonderful. The billing department is unresponsive and challenging to work with. I had a really bad experience with them working with my insurance that caused me a lot of added heartache I didn't need. I mentioned this to my nurse, Shawn, and financial counselor, April, and they helped me escalate it to a senior person on the team to help get resolution.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
The majority of my first IVF cycle (actual procedure) was covered by my insurance. Dr. O'Brien did a lot to help ensure I was able to maximize that. Now I am doing Shared Risk which is EXPENSIVE - but it's worth it for the peace of mind. If you qualify, it's a great option if there's a likelihood that you'll have to do multiple retrievals and transfers.

Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)
[Dr. O'Brien] was so delicate in moments that needed it, and so comprehensive at other times... I always felt supported and cared for, and she understood our process as a two mom family and always made us feel embraced for the choices we were making...Incredibly inclusive of my wife as much as me, and always respected our choices throughout the process of egg retrieval, through miscarriages, and through to us graduating to our local OB-GYN.
The clinic [at Shady Grove Fertility] overall was not competent at LGBTQ+ care. I was asked about my husband multiple times, and corrected them to my wife each time. Additionally, the billing person/team is horrible and very hard to get a straight answer out of about anything. Not a quick response time...The phlebotomists are fabulous, as were the nurses on the surgical floor...Internally, I think they have communication issues
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
We would absolutely love to work with Dr. O'Brien again. She was so delicate in moments that needed it, and so comprehensive at other times, so we were fully involved in the process. There is literally nothing negative I have to say about her, she is a fabulous doctor and was willing to throw everything at the wall to make sure we got our rainbow. We have already referred another two mom family to her, and she worked with them with as much compassion and clinical creativity as she did us, through miscarriage and policy changes that impacted their care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Make sure you communicate if you are concerned about something. She will always take you seriously, and if it's within her power, she'll find an answer or creative solution.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
She made sure to call and touch base after every challenging moment on the journey. She is incredibly nerdy but in the best way, and she somehow also managed to have such a human touch in the way she approached our care. I always felt supported and cared for, and she understood our process as a two mom family and always made us feel embraced for the choices we were making, and that everything could happen on our timeline, when we were ready.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
After two miscarriages, we tried a low dose steroid and daily shots of blood thinners through the first trimester to try to keep the pregnancy viable. It worked on the first try with this protocol... I think it was found in a journal as an intervention for pregnancy loss that had no cause after testing. Aside from that, my protocol was standard for a 30 year old that didn't have infertility, but was just a part of a two mom family. Progesterone shots every third day, vaginal inserts twice a day, and estrogen. That was for transfer; I don't remember the egg retrieval protocol.
How competent was Jeanne O'Brien at LGBTQ+ care?
Yes. She interacted with our family as I would have wanted a provider to interact with our family. Incredibly inclusive of my wife as much as me, and always respected our choices throughout the process of egg retrieval, through miscarriages, and through to us graduating to our local OB-GYN.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Christine)
Christine was the other reason we had the best experience, even during hard times. Timely and responsive communication, no matter how often we asked questions or thought we didn't make sense. Really made the process phenomenal, even when the process was challenging and sad.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
The clinic overall was not competent at LGBTQ+ care. I was asked about my husband multiple times, and corrected them to my wife each time. Additionally, the billing person/team is horrible and very hard to get a straight answer out of about anything. Not a quick response time, and meaningless answers that requires another round of slow communication to attempt to get a more actionable answer. The phlebotomists are fabulous, as were the nurses on the surgical floor. I don't want to forget them, because they were great. The facility is nice, but I would say that most other things about the clinic are meh or fine. The other techs and the doctors I had in substitution of Dr. O'Brien, I was generally unimpressed with though. Some were even insensitive regarding miscarriage. Literally would only come back for Dr. O'Brien and Christine, because they surpassed all expectations and knew what we needed as a family to feel cared for in this process with so many ups and downs.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
We did shared risk program, as most of our care was not covered by insurance. I believe we paid $25,000 not including genetic testing ($6,000), medications ($??? maybe $10,000) and other insurance covered things such as a D&C and polyp removal (we paid out of pocket at least $1200). Sperm cost $3,000. Plus, we have embryos in storage we pay for monthly. We spent at least $40,000.
Describe Jeanne O'Brien's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
I believe it was their policy at Shady Grove to only do 1 at a time if there was no clinical reason to do more; we never had a choice to do more than one, nor would we have chosen that due to my age and the fact that blood flow to my uterus seemed to be the issue with miscarriage.
How competent was Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic) at LGBTQ+ care?
No. Asked about my husband multiple times, multiple people. Heteronormative mindset and not affirming (rainbows, etc to indicate training or any bit of knowledge about how to navigate families that are not one (cis)man one (cis)woman.
Describe your experience using 3rd party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier) at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
I think it worked okay; I have no memory of it, but seemed to happen smoothly.
What specific things went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Lost paperwork
Lost appointments
Provided conflicting information
Scheduled the wrong procedure
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
Internally, I think they have communication issues. Not sure the left hand talks to the right hand. They also were over capacity with patients I think, because it was COVID and everyone was working remotely so wanted to start the process. I'm sure this added to the overwhelm but it made the administrative experience with them a nightmare.

She [Dr. O'Brien] explained both options, but preferred to transfer singles. However in my first cycle, we had only 2 viable embryos that were both b grade. She was comfortable with me making the decision to transfer both...[she] adjusted my protocols as needed and gave me a detailed explanation on why and how the protocol was changed...She took the time to listen to me and answered questions throughly. I never felt like she was rushing me and she was positive and reassuring. She held my hand when I needed. I had confidence in her abilites.
Monitor was done in the morning, which wasn't always convenient. However, the [Shady Grove Fertility] office had appointments starting at 7:15, so I was able to go and make it to work easily...The first cycle we did, we ended up paying 4000 out of pocket...They are not totally clear with the billing and its important to stay on top of it yourself so you are not surprised with a large bill. They have great facilities, especially the surgical floor for embryo retrieval and transfers
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
I have recommended Dr. O'Brien to several friends as well as having gone back to her for a second pregnancy. She is knowledgeable, kind, and treated me with respect. Although it was sometime frustrating to deal with her nurses, she herself is amazing. I highly recommend her to anyone.

Make sure you can email her directly if you really have an important question. You are in great hands.

I don't remember the exact protocols for my cycles, but I do know that Dr. O'Brien adjusted my protocols as needed and gave me a detailed explanation on why and how the protocol was changed.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
I had an experience where I was very unhappy with the communication and empathy of a nurse. When I talked with Dr. O'Brien about my experience, she transferred my care to a different nurse. I was very happy with the second nurse.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
They are a large clinic, so it can feel impersonal for the check ins, but it is clean, organized, on time and when you meet with your doctor it is personal. They are not totally clear with the billing and its important to stay on top of it yourself so you are not surprised with a large bill. They have great facilities, especially the surgical floor for embryo retrieval and transfers.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
Monitor was done in the morning, which wasn't always convenient. However, the office had appointments starting at 7:15, so I was able to go and make it to work easily. Monitoring ran smoothly and I frequent saw the same ultrasound technicians who were friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. Nursing staff that took blood sample varied in their competence, from very good to okay. I never had one I thought wasn't competent, just some were more skilled.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
The first cycle we did, we ended up paying 4000 out of pocket (beyond what insurance covered. When I went back a few years later, my insurance had change and out of pocket costs for 2 cycles of ivf were closer to 9,000 as my insurance covered less.
Describe Jeanne O'Brien's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
She explained both options, but preferred to transfer singles. However in my first cycle, we had only 2 viable embryos that were both b grade. She was comfortable with me making the decision to transfer both (resulting in twins). My next two cycle, we did single embryo transfers (resulting in 1 single birth).

She [Dr. Jeanne OBrien] was helpful to speak with, visit, in emails, phone calls, and through the whole treatment process. She had a real go getter attitude about her like nothing was going to stop her until she got us pregnant...When problems were identified with my husband or myself, Dr. O'Brien adjusted our plan accordingly. Our treatment with Dr. O'Brien resulted in twin boys!...She helped us to become a family by being extremely knowledgeable in her profession. She was kind and took the time to explain and answer questions.
We were in the shared-risk program [at Shady Grove Fertility-Rockville] that was about $25,000...There isn't a single weakness that I experienced at Shady Grove. My entire experience exceeded every expectation that I had... I could not say enough positive words about Jessica Buggs! She was kind, hard working, sensitive, and made me laugh often throughout a hard time of trying to conceive...was there for every need with a smile and a calming presence.

I am still currently a patient and in the egg donor recipient process- I am out of state, so I do not see her [Dr. Jeanne O'Brien] that frequently, but she inspired great confidence, and was also at the same time, personable and human...She had a great happy medium between technical and warm- she carried a conversation and alluded to personal things she remembered about us...She was advising against genetic testing on our embryos in our situation, and made a compelling case- that it would require freezing the embryos and we would not be able to do a fresh transfer, and that it can be helpful in the case of someone who has older eggs
Shady Grove seems like an excellent, well run facility. Since they are so large, they seem to have everything down to a system but without making one feel like a number. The facilities in Rockville are modern and clean, and our day-long visit was well organized and efficient...there are about 3 support staff members on my case- nursing, donor selection, and general coordinator, and they are all knowledgeable, communicative and helpful...

She was advising against genetic testing on our embryos in our situation, and made a compelling case- that it would require freezing the embryos and we would not be able to do a fresh transfer, and that it can be helpful in the case of someone who has older eggs, and not many chances to conceive, but since we have a guaranteed program, we would be able to try again if there were genetic issues that came up after implantation.

Describe Jeanne O'Brien's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
I am pretty sure that they advise against it, and in the case of the shady grove guaranteed program, it does not make sense to transfer more than one at a time, since a single embryo has a better chance of survival, and if it does not survive, we can try again with another.

There is a bit of a disconnect between her [Dr. O'Brien] and her nurses...Dr. O'Brien told us up front that given all of our conditions it would be like finding a needle in a haystacks, but she was very persistent and after 4 years we finally got pregnant. She went out of her way to ensure she was available to do our retrievals and transfers...Our main objective was to produce as many eggs as possible since we were dealing with male infertility issues. She ensured the top embryologist was available during the retrieval for the ICSI afterwards. Additionally she was very receptive to our ideas re: protocol.
they [Shady Grove] accidentally thawed my husband's sperm without telling us but continued to charge us the storage fee. This was huge and they didn't see it as a big deal. When male infertility is the diagnosis and we felt the sperm at the time was good enough to freeze-its a big deal!...My biggest criticism with the clinic is their financial department. They are so money grubbing its disgusting. I have a $5K balance after one cycle because of course they collect all the money up front without factoring in all of the insurance available. They never told me about this balance they owed me. I noticed it after one follow up visit and asked why they hadn't refunded me. They explained they assumed I would just use it towards my next cycle. First off, I didn't have another cycle planned at the time And secondly, they didn't connect the dots and realize that my insurance covered most all of the treatment so I would never owe them $5K for a cycle...Since then I have burned through all of my insurance benefits, but this was not the case at the time. Also they didn't explain when I would owe the money so I checked out at an appt early on in my first cycle and the Finance person told me I owed thousands of dollars It caught me completely off guard.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Dr. Debbie Rice)
We're actually in the middle of a transition. I loved our nurse Debbie Rice and even though she no longer supported Dr. O'Brien she was still assigned to us so we could work with the same nurse throughout so she would work with Dr. O'Brien even though she worked for another doctor. For this upcoming cycle we have to work with a new nurse for the first time as Debbie is out on medical leave. We have already been disappointed. Debbie was so accommodating to our schedules and requests whereas our new nurse (Jessica Buggs) hasn't made any effort at all. It is so disappointing I hope it doesn't negatively affect our final cycle

I had great coverage for the first 3 rounds and then we started carrying two insurances but I believe it was around $8K per round as my husband had to have procedures as well And we had to have genetic testing as we are both CF carriers.
Describe Jeanne O'Brien's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
Since I did not have poor egg quality, Dr. O'Brien didn't feel multiple embryo transfer was a necessary route to go. Additionally we just didn't have multiple embryos to transfer at any given time

Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy

Lost or damaged samples
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
As I mentioned earlier, they erroneously thawed my husband's sperm.
Additionally, they sent my prescriptions to a realtor in Michigan instead of to my pharmacy. For this, they didn't treat it as a huge issue even though I am pretty confident there are OSHA violations related to this.
When my nurse was out of office, the nurse assigned to call with my dosing for that evening failed to call.

I am someone who wants to know all of the details and have a thorough plan. Dr. O'Brien was sensitive to this and always took time to explain test results and their implication on next steps/my treatment plan. I know I have only scratched the surface in describing just how wonderful Dr. O'Brien is, but she is nothing short of spectacular. My mother and I have been singing her praises to anyone who will listen. I love Dr. O'Brien and am so grateful for the amazing gift she has given me. Words cannot do justice to the love and appreciation I have for her. She will always have a special place in my heart. If I could remain under her care until the birth of my baby, I would without hesitation.
My out of pocket expenses at SGF were no more than a few hundred dollars (co-pays)....maybe $600 including the out-of-pocket counseling service required of patients using donor sperm. I paid about $2000 for PGS testing and another $900 for the donor sperm. Medicine cost me under $200 total. The greater majority of my medical expenses were covered by insurance....I am someone who wants to know all of the details and have a thorough plan. Dr. O'Brien was sensitive to this and always took time to explain test results and their implication on next steps/my treatment plan. How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. O'Brien is an absolute gem!!! My experience as her patient was nothing short of incredible and nurturing. Throughout my journey, Dr. O'Brien was always compassionate, nurturing, and responsive. I think that a big reason why I was able to remain as positive as I was throughout the process was because of Dr. O'Brien and her support of me. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
The one piece of advice that I would give a prospective patient of Dr. O'Brien is to trust her and have faith. There is noone who will fight harder for you (other than you, of course) in realizing your dream of parenthood.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. O'Brien was always compassionate and took time to talk to me about next steps in my treatment plan. She made adjustments to my treatment plan based on how I was feeling and always shared enough information so that decisions were well-informed. I have always felt that Dr. O'Brien saw me as more than just a patient/case. She saw me as a woman who desperately wanted to realize a dream of being a mother and she helped me accomplish that dream.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
I do not remember much about my treatment protocols. For my egg retrieval, I used Menopur (increased dosing following monitoring appts), Follistim (300), and Cetrotide. I think the trigger was HCG.
For transfer, I began with daily IM shots of progesterone in oil and 2x daily estrodial tabs (vaginal). Then, I introduced 3x daily progesterone suppositories and switched to IM progesterone in oil shots to once every 3 days (in addition to 2x daily estrodial tabs).
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Jessica Buggs)
Jessica was compassionate, organized, communicative, and responsive. She was always willing to answer my questions (and ease my worries), responding to my emails and phone calls in a timely manner. She and Dr. O'Brien are the dynamic duo! I would not have made it through this journey without the support and encouragement of Jessica. She is a wonderful asset to the team at SGF and will always have a special place in my heart.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
Among SGF's strengths are the office climate (everyone was friendly, warm, and welcoming at SGF), organization, and supportive environment. They set the bar high for patient care and you should expect to compare your experience at other offices against your experience at SGF. No matter who you engage with, you can be sure that you will be treated with respect, your questions will be answered, and that promises will be kept (if they say they will look into something for you or find out the answer to a question...they will follow through). Everything about my experience at SGF was positive.

Describe Jeanne O'Brien's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).

She was kind, warm, cares about her patience in a genuine manner. ... Dr. O'Brien was empathetic. For example, when my procedures were unsuccessful, she genuinely cared about me as a person. She was a clear communicator, trustworthy. Instead of thinking about making the money for the clinic, she recommended the appropriate amount of times. She forewarned us about the maximum amount of treatment. She never gave false hope either.
When there were administrative mistakes, they [Shady Grove Fertility] made excuses instead of apologizing for their errors. Sometimes you had to wait too long in the waiting room, there were times it seemed like they forget about me. This is for blood work and ultra sound work there. This was distressing as I had a full-time job I needed to be at. ... Our first nurse had more compassion and we felt more a connection with her.

Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
There were so many treatment plans, each one was unique with the end goal being a baby. We immediately decided upon IFV treatment first after removal of cysts from my ovaries. Due to advance age and stage IV endometriosis, we felt it was the best route.

Dr. O'Brien is a busy person, to be sure, but I never had a day where I had a question or concern that I didn't at least get a return phone call by the end of the day. Her positivity is contagious and she was always ready with a plan b or c when plan A didn't work. As someone who despises going to the doctor it truly suprised me the day I realized that I saw here as more of a friend than a doctor. If you need someone in your corner, someone to keep faith that this will work even when you've lost all yours, Dr. OBrien is a great choice...
Shady Grove is a big clinic, so yes you sometimes feel a bit like a number, but if you find the right Doctor and Nurse, the long road of infertility suddenly doesnt seem so dark and lonely...Ask questions. You'll feel better knowing all the answers. And trust her when she says she'll make it work. She doesn't give up :)...While my nurse, Effie often called with day to day results, Dr OBrien always followed up with a phone call if the results were something important. She was very respectful of my feelings (and since I was on lots of hormones there were LOTS of feelings) and she always stayed hopeful...
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
I went to Dr O'Brien after having a rather negative experience with a different doctor and it was like night and day. Our case was a little unconventional. Because of how far away we lived from Rockville, we didn't meet Dr O'Brien in person until the day of egg retrieval but we both felt like we already knew each other from various phone interactions. She [Dr. O'Brien] genuinely wants to achieve success. She is smart, up to date on current literature, studies and treatments... She is available via email as well. Have questions ready and she will be ready to answer them for you...she used less medication than the other clinic and results were immediately better...is forthright and compassionate. She was very responsive and took time to explain our options and predict potential outcomes.
she [nurse at Shady Grove] was prompt and responsive. She answered all my questions. Kendra Noll was the care coordinator. She is outstanding. When I first called for an appointment at Shady Grove she spent nearly an hour on the phone with me. It was like talking to an old girlfriend. Her compassion and understanding and patience are remarkable...Roughly 30K for IVF, PGS, and 100% guarantee.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
We came to Dr. O'Brien after having failure after multiple (3 x IUI, 2 x IVF) cycles at another clinic. It was honestly like night and day. I was becoming reasonably certain I would not find success and so was attracted to the 100% guarantee of Shady Grove. Dr. O'Brien was honest, direct, and forthright. As a provider myself this meant a lot to me. I was already 2 years into the process and didn't want anyone blowing proverbial smoke. We had success with her on our very first try.

Since I'm a high responder with PCOS and overweight we used a drug that was not clomid for IUIs. I can't remember the Name. We also took a conservative approach since I had not tried to get pregnant previously. As the IUIs were not successful we increased dosages of the drugs and ultimately moved to ivf. The ivf protocol was for a high responder and it was successful first round.

I did pgs, and since I have chronic hypertension having multiples was a huge risk. Since the embryos were tested and I had three normal ones, we decided transferring one would be the best option and the safest option for me and a future baby.

My egg retrieval was delayed because they failed to tell me that there was a bmi limit. They had been weighing me regularly for a year and never mentioned this limit. I was forced to delay while I lost enough weight to get below the limit. I was very frustrated as this could have easily been handled over the many months I'd been at the clinic

I fully believe without her [Dr. Jeanne O'Brien] determination, compassion, positive and hopeful spirit we may have lost hope ourselves and would have given up. She firmly believed we would eventually become a family, and by placing our trust in her judgment in our treatment plan we have. She gave us every reason to hope and believe at every negative/setback. She is an asset to Shady Grove Fertility Center. I recommend everyone I know experiencing infertility to Dr O'Brien for care because I believe 100% in her abilities, and I know she will treat every patient as special as she made us feel.
Our experience with Vivian Oseni was absolutely wonderful. She always made you feel Luke you were her only patient. She was very sensitive, kind and compassionate. She was "my rock" many times when she'd call with negative news. There is nothing I would change about my experience with Vivian. I recommend anyone going through fertility treatment to request her as their nurse...There is nothing I would change about my experience with Shady Grove Fertility. We had an exceptional experience with our clinic. From the receptionist, lab technician, sonorgrapher, nurses and physicians, everyone makes you feel they are 100% committed to supporting you and helping you be successful. One thing very different about Shady Grove patients compared to other clinics is that Shady Grove patients have a great understanding about their condition and treatment because the staff provides so much information in person and on their website about treatment, conditions, education, and support groups. The most special thing about Shady Grove is the genuine understanding and compassion. A lot of Shady Grove staff have also experienced infertility, so they truly know what you are going through on this fertility path. The genuineness of all staff sets this clinic apart from all other clinics. You are not just a patient or number to Shady Grove. You are part of the Shady Grove family from your very first appointment.

Dr. O'Brien seemed to be perfectly matched to us. Much like myself, she was very determined and positive about our infertility journey. She always made us feel like we were the only patient she had, taking time to answer any questions and detailing our plans as we moved forward with each cycle. We felt very supported by Dr O'Brien, and felt that she grieved our losses and celebrated our successes with us. We were on donor egg protocol with estrogen and progesterone. Usually, This is a straightforward protocol, but my body had difficulty in responding. Dr O'Brien changed dosage and frequency of estrogen injections to assist my body in stimulating the uterine lining. In addition she utilized other different medications (estradial, viagra and tomaxifin citrate) throughout my cycles to stimulate my uterine lining to develop enough to support conception. She also performed hysteroscopies, D &Cs and endometrial biopsies to optimize our chances at conception . During my 5 treatment cycles, Dr O'Brien consulted her colleagues and was open to suggestions of her peers to assist us in becoming successful.
When we came to the decision to proceed with gestational carrier, our carrier was assigned normal protocol of estrogen and progesterone and she responded appropriately.

Our insurance did not cover fertility treatment. We were enrolled in shared risk/shared donor money back guarantee program, which I believe was $29,000. In addition, my insurance did pay some costs associated with procedures, testing and surgery costs.
Describe Jeanne O'Brien's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
Dr O'Brien always followed Shady Grove Fertility protocol and suggested transferring only one embryo per transfer cycle. At our last cycle, our gestational carrier requested to transfer two embryos because it was our last attempt before stopping fertility treatment. Dr O'Brien reviewed her health, age and prior pregnancy details and agreed she was healthy enough to carry a twin pregnancy. She agreed to allow our gestational carrier to transfer two embryos.

We thought she [Dr. O'Brien] was a very compassionate and knowledgeable doctor.... I guess my feelings are mixed. She was a wonderful person and doctor, but I also feel like she was trying to get us to spend the most amount of money.... She said "since we could get pregnant" she thought the 3 IUIS should work. If not, she would suggest IVF. After the IUIS failed she basically said all of our numbers were excellent and we should have gotten pregnant. Therefore our "chemicals do not mix" so we should do IVF with ICI.
They [Shady Grove Fertility] have a lot of people coming in and out of there. They make things as quick and painless as possible. It is great to be able to do all of the procedures in the same building with the same people. I think they could make you feel like less of a dollar sign, if anything.... We had two or three different nurses. They kept quitting, so it was hard to keep tract. The one I remember, I believe her name was Effie was very sweet and helpful.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
We thought she was a very compassionate and knowledgeable doctor. We did not know at the time of our first appointment that we were actually already pregnant. Unfortunately that pregnancy ended in a partial mole. I think she then based her recommendations on what most people do. I guess my feelings are mixed. She was a wonderful person and doctor, but I also feel like she was trying to get us to spend the most amount of money. I am sure if we ended up with a baby my story would be different though.

She did a good job making us feel "human" at the time. Looking back, I feel like we were more of a number though. I feel like it is kind of scripted. They just want to make money, so the pick the most expensive option.

I know the IUIS cost $4000 as we had to get a loan. I believe our insurance covered most of the pre testing. Clomid and other medications ran about $500.

Working with Dr. O'Brien was great. She is dedicated, passionate and very clear regarding expectation...I would not hesitate to recommend her. She was straightforward and clear regarding what to expect and made sure we were aware of all of the potential variables that factored into the decision making process. It is helpful to educate yourself about the process and leverage Dr. O'Brien's expertise. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.
the billing department, and admin staff [at Shady Grove] treated us like a number. We were often overbilled without explanation...Our nurses were great...we have had a positive experience. However there were occasions where the admin staff provided information that was incorrect. For example we received a bill for storage costs for a frozen embryo. This was a shock to us as we did not actually have any embryos that were able to be frozen.

It depended on if we had insurance coverage. Several of our initial cycles were covered. When not covered by insurance the costs were high (but expected).

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
In aggregate we have had a positive experience. However there were occasions where the admin staff provided information that was incorrect. For example we received a bill for storage costs for a frozen embryo. This was a shock to us as we did not actually have any embryos that were able to be frozen.

Dr. O’Brien is very nice and knowledgeable and she took her time explaining things to me and my husband. She was also patient and respectful to our spiritual beliefs. We would go back to her for care...Dr. O’Brien was empathetic and she took her time to explain our situation as well as treatment options...Feel free to ask Dr. O’Brien any questions you may have. She takes the time to hear you out and address any concerns you may have.
Shawn [nurse] was knowledgeable and informative regarding the IVF process but I felt she didn’t exhibit compassion. Especially for someone new to this process. I felt more like a number to her and not a person...The staff [at Shady Grove] are nice and helpful. Also the clinic is clean and newly renovated. There’s a lot of space in the waiting room. There’s a pharmacy in the building which makes it easier to pick up prescriptions medications...

She [Dr. O'Brien] is a terrific doctor, very detailed and answers your questions in a no nonsense matter, I really appreciate knowing the process and what is involved in the procedures, she was great in predicting what is best for me and so far it has been great...We tried first with Clomid and IUI, which was unsuccessful, due to my age we switched over to a minimal IVF protocol which was not good enough for me so we cancelled the cycle, the next time meds were adjusted and I was able to produce 5 eggs
Christine [nurse at Shady Grove Fertility] is the best, she answers all my questions promptly and is very compassionate person...24500 for the multi cycle program, I was not approved for the risk free program, roughly $7000 for the medications...It is not the best place for people who need their hand held, going through IVF is tough and difficult,...there are a lot of people working there so don’t expect to see the same face every time

She's [Dr Jeanne OBrien] great, but super analytical, which we liked....She knows a ton and is part of a highly qualified team. She's not touchy-feely, but that's not what I want our of a medical specialist. She's matter-a-fact in a way that's refreshing.
Shady Grove is a big clinic which means that it has way more in the way of resources and experiences to help support you as a patient. You don't always see the same doctor, but you also don't have to wait for a long time for appointments... As a working professional, appointment wait time is really important to me. You can always reach someone when you have questions and their helpline nurses are phenomenal. Shady Grove has the infrastructure to provide a comprehensive patient experience.

When our results were not what everyone anticipated, she [Dr. Jeanne O'Brien] was ready with a plan B immediately. She called us immediately and assured us that she had a plan. There wasn't even a moment of uncertainty as to how we should proceed. Our cycle was definitely tailored to our unique fertility needs.
Shady Grove is nationally recognized for a reason. They have top notch technology and everyone who works there is really wonderful. A weakness might be that it is so big that you end up seeing many doctors throughout your treatment, but that is also a strength because the doctors can rely on each other for advice when necessary.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
My children are alive because of Dr. O'Brien. Other doctors told us to give up hope, but she felt confident (seemingly against all odds) that we would be successful. We trusted her and fought for the treatment she recommended, and have our children because of it!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Trust her. If she says you have hope, you do. If she says to move on to a donor, it's because you really do have to use a donor.

Dr. O'Brien is the best! She is patient with answering questions, compassionate, and honest when it comes to treatment. She is very warm and her energy makes you believe the treatment will work. She's quite direct, but not in such a way that is off-putting or cruel. Instead, she's clear when setting expectations for treatment and easy to work with.... She took the time to talk through everything we discussed during appointments. She also remembered details about my life (job, husband's name, pets' names) and seemed to genuinely care about them.
Shawn [a nurse at Shady Grove Fertility- Rockville] is the best! She's easy to get in touch with, answers all my questions, and helps us understand our treatment schedule.... I was failing to ovulate, so she [Dr. Jeanne O'Brien] prescribed Clomid and Ovidrel to not only grow follicles, but ensure the egg(s) were released as well. Follicle growth was monitored via blood work and ultrasound

Dr. O'Brien is a very competent doctor. We haven't gotten the results we have hoped for, but we're still in it. I'm still waiting on a call back for follow up treatment. I'm hoping for a new strategy or new answers....They [the staff at Shady Grove] are compassionate, but I still don't feel like I get all the answers I want. I'd like more explanation as to why they did things and how to strategize a new protocol for better results. Perhaps more testing, etc....My nurse is typical. Not overly compassionate, but helpful enough. I don't think she goes above and beyond, to her I think it's a job, but she is competent.

[Dr. O'Brien] told me some encouraging news in a situation that was not so positive. She answered our questions both in person and in our follow ups...The only time I had any concern was during a procedure and she came in and did it without really telling me what was happening...All the other times our interactions were great...We never made it to any cycles because it was discovered that I had fibroid although I had no symptoms.
My husband and I asked about the cost of the procedures ahead, rough estimates since we were paying out of pocket, but the folks from the billing or financial department [at Shady Grove Fertility] never contacted us to give us an estimate...The care coordinator that we started with was amazing. She answered emails and helped us switch appointments...we had to pay out of pocket for our blood work, both of us were checked and it was insane that blood work was over 1200 dollars
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
The only time I had any concern was during a procedure and she came in and did it without really telling me what was happening, it was very scary since my husband was not allowed in, during covid. It was a time I needed support and did not have any. All the other times our interactions were great.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Be sure you have a list of questions to ask and don't be afraid to ask about anything you don't understand. Also, take someone that can digest all the information with you since you might not be able to "hear" all you are being told.

Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
We never made it to any cycles because it was discovered that I had fibroid although I had no symptoms. I went for surgery and then waited for the follow up. We had testing done to see if we would be able to retrieve eggs, which we could at the time. My husband and I asked about the cost of the procedures ahead, rough estimates since we were paying out of pocket, but the folks from the billing or financial department never contacted us to give us an estimate. Then covid became very high and we felt it was not safe to be doing anything medical if not mecessary with our family risks.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
The care coordinator that we started with was amazing. She answered emails and helped us switch appointments when we were leaving vacation early because of a hurricane and got us in the day we were passing thru. She was great. I can not remember her name but I do have it somewhere.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility WMA (US Fertility Network clinic).

Our first appointment was covered by my husband's insurance since we were trying to find out why we could not conceive. Once I hade my surgery, we had to pay out of pocket for our blood work, both of us were checked and it was insane that blood work was over 1200 dollars, then when they were doing some tests to check for follicles or eggs, they were able to only do one test instead of 2 to save us some money, which was helpful since the first test was able to give us the information we needed

We wanted to have an estimate of the costs particular to our case, since we were paying out of pocket, after seeing the doctor and my surgery, everything was on us and we wanted to know if it was possible to try to have a baby and if we could afford to have one.
We requested multiple times for someone to contact us about the costs, yet never got a call or email or contact from anyone that would be able to answer our questions.

She [Dr. O'Brien] answered all my questions thoroughly. She explained how every day of my cycle what tests will be conducted and so forth. I’m looking forward to get started...She has excellent bedside manner...She was very kind and easy to talk to...She wants to test everything. Once my cycle starts I will be going through the steps of pre-screening to asses and evaluate how to go about getting my pregnant and to carry to term. I like that she explain my medical results from my ob to me.
The clinic [Shady Grove Dertility-Rockville] itself is very clean and organized. They have packets and folders packed with resources and relevant information. All the staff I did meet were very friendly and kind. It’s nice to know that their staff also use the services offered for family building. :)...Care coordinator.. she was very reassuring. She told me and my partner about how her children were conceived from the help of Dr. O’Brien’s treatment and care. So that was very reassuring.

I haven’t received my bill yet but the copay was $50. My issuance. The costs we lined out tho. Pre-screening would be about $300 copay. Once my deductible is hit everything further on would be covered. I believe it depends on insurance though what is covered and how much. It may vary per insurance.

Dr O’Brien is amazing. She’s dedicated, compassionate, smart and wants to help get you pregnant...Do your own research, ask questions and assert yourself. Find her email if you want to hear from her and not the nurse. Their motto “it only takes one” is so true...She [Dr. O'Brien] was hard to get a hold of but I managed to guess her email and she did respond which I appreciated. [Dr. Jeanne O'Brien] was incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate and caring...was incredible from start to finish...She got us a baby with the first try and was a champion every step of the way. She personally called to share news which isn't as common.
