How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
We didn't know much about fertility treatment when we began our fertility journey. Upon consultation, we were told that we should have started our treatment years ago, which was discouraging considering we had just gotten married and there was nothing we could do about that. We began with all diagnostics to make sure that everything in my body was working as it should, which was Dr. Nelson's suggestion. We were never told that anything wasn't "good." HRC Pasadena in general had many miscommunications and directions given to us that were not clear, from both the medical assistant assigned to our case to the financial coordinator. As we began our treatments with Dr. Nelson, which was close to our home and convenient, he began conservatively. We appreciated this because I came in believing, and was under the impression even after all the labs, that I was fertile Myrtle. We were NEVER told that my AMH was under 1 when we began trying to get pregnant. It wasn't until we were out of funds in 2017 where we were just paying our OBGYN to do IUIs that we consulted with another fertility doctor who went over our labs from 2015 and said that she would have started with IVF immediately back in 2015 to retrieve the eggs I had! I have been so so so so so disappointed in the fact that 2 years and over $50,000 have been spent without us knowing the proper information. We have taken time off to build up our financials so we can try retrievals once again AND here we are in 2019 now with nothing. I'm SO angry, upset, resentful and frustrated that my bloodwork and personal lab results were withheld and not given to me clearly in 2015 when I was 34 as they would have changed our plan and how we proceed. I also know now that if someone says something to you like, "you should have started your fertility journey years ago," they are NOT the person you should trust to guide you on your way to making a baby.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Don't expect a physician to objectively explain your lab work or the process. Get educated and ask for all of your information and labs to be printed for you so you can get educated on your own.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
We felt like a number because we had very little knowledge of the process in the beginning and we trusted Dr. Nelson. During the first minute of our consult he said we were already behind because of our age. If he thought that we were so far behind, why did he start so conservatively? When you've experienced your 4th failed attempt at IUI and the nurse practitioner, who you've only met for 5 seconds blurts out, you should just go to IVF, it dehumanizes you and makes you feel like a failure and you are out of options.
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
Dr. Nelson wanted to start with bloodwork and diagnostics to make sure that my body was functioning properly. He suggested we start with an ICI, which was very conservative and in hindsight, we have no idea why he would start there if he knew that my AMH was below 1. We asked about using Clomid, which he didn't offer immediately. Going into our first insemination, we did use Clomid, per our own request, and we did request an IUI. After the first insemination, he thought the Clomid was pointless and he didn't suggest any other meds except the HCG trigger shot. We continued with 3 more IUIs using HCG trigger shots, none of them resulting in pregnancy. It was after our 4th insemination that the nurse practitioner, who we'd just met, said, "you should just do IVF." At that point we were done with this office and never received a call or follow up from Dr. Nelson.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Justina Wang)
Justina had a heavy accent, which made communicating about things which require so much detail, like giving yourself injections on specific days very challenging. We had NEVER gone through any form of fertility treatment before and this information was not given to us like we should know the process and what to do.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
It a pretty clinic, which was very misleading because the facade of looking good didn't match the behind the scenes medical experience. Strengths: the office is beautiful, the parking is free and it is convenient for people living in Pasadena. Weakness: there is awful communication and you are expected to know about fertility treatments at your consultation as a new patient.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
Each time we did a round of IUI, it was $2000 for the procedure + the cost of meds + the cost of sperm = $3500-$4000 each round of IUI.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at HRC Fertility.
Overall we are very disappointed with our care from this facility and cannot believe we wasted 3 years of prime fertility time on a clinic that took our money for conservative treatments with no results to show, knowing that my AMH was under 1. It wasn't until 2018, when we had finally saved up enough money to go to consultations once again that we were told by two new fertility doctors that we should have started with aggressive fertility treatments immediately in 2015 with the AMH level they saw us on our lab work from HRC Pasadena in 2015. Physicians from both consultations independently stated that ICIs and IUIs most likely would have never been successful with an AMH below 1 and they would have started with more aggressive treatments.
While we have only had an initial consultation with Dr. Nelson, I feel 100% confident moving forward with him as our doctor and that he will absolutely help us find success on this stressful journey...he did a great job at explaining to us what the process was. I feel confident with my case he will be able to strategize exactly what I will need in order to have a smooth sailing retrieval and transfer
The [HRC Fertfility] clinic itself is beautiful! The waiting area is full of luxurious, comfy seating, there is free Starbucks coffee, and it was impeccably clean...I cannot think of any weaknesses as I was just so impressed with the level of cleanliness and comfort they provide in the entire facility...IVF promotion/program that will roughly total $18,000 including medication and embryo storage
How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
While we have only had an initial consultation with Dr. Nelson, I feel 100% confident moving forward with him as our doctor and that he will absolutely help us find success on this stressful journey. He agreed to meet us in person with no sense of regret or unease during this current pandemic, and I can easily say that interaction has made me much less defeated and alone in my struggle with infertility.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
I would advise any prospective patient of Dr. Nelson's to come in with your head held high, let go of your insecurities whether that relates to your infertility or not, and allow yourself to trust. He is there to help us achieve our dreams of parenthood, but we have to be willing to give him the kind of control that we never though we'd have to give. That's the story of infertility, is it not?
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Dr. Nelson was kind enough to allow us to come to his office for an in-person consultation after I expressed my slight disappointment in only getting to talk over the phone. I think it's so important to be in the same room as a person in order to feel the energy, whether positive or negative, that your interactions produce. Amidst the chaos currently surrounding our world right now, I couldn't have been more appreciative that he chose to treat us as humans and speak to us face to face!

We've not reached the medication protocol stage just yet, but he did a great job at explaining to us what the process was. I feel confident with my case he will be able to strategize exactly what I will need in order to have a smooth sailing retrieval and transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Chloe Han)
My initial interaction was with a different staff member named Griselda, over the phone, who I felt truly cared to answer any and all questions I had about setting up our consultation and in such a timely manner. She definitely started my interactions off in positive light which only continued to brighten! Chloe, the care coordinator was just as kind and responsive, she made sure to clearly explain our next steps and answered our questions very well. She even advocated for us as we were checking out and made sure we only paid the first consultation quote we were given before changing our appointment to an in-person consultation. That was the absolute cherry on top that made us feel so much more than just a new client!
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
The clinic itself is beautiful! The waiting area is full of luxurious, comfy seating, there is free Starbucks coffee, and it was impeccably clean! The exam rooms and other conference rooms were just and comforting which is not always the case in a medical setting, but I felt very welcomed. I cannot think of any weaknesses as I was just so impressed with the level of cleanliness and comfort they provide in the entire facility!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
Our initial consultation was $260, which is actually the over the phone cost, but we changed our appointment the day before as we really wanted to meet him in person. From what I gathered that cost is actually $350. As for the cost of everything else we are waiting to have our financial appointment in the next hour, but we are doing an IVF promotion/program that will roughly total $18,000 including medication and embryo storage. Of course, this is a large sum of money but I feel in my heart we will have success with Dr. Nelson and that amount will be so abundantly worth it!
Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
Dr. Nelson, spent time answering a question we had about transferring a single vs multiple embryos in a very honest way. It's not cut and dry, and our choice of single vs multiple will depend on certain things we may or may not decide to do. I appreciated his input and opinion on that topic and it has given us a clearer idea of what to expect once we cross that road.
He [Dr. Jeffrey Nelson] remembered our last conversation or a comment I made which made me think he does pay attention and cares about his patients...He can be very busy though, and most of the time my appointments would be running late up to 30 minutes...I felt that he expected for us to have some knowledge and was not clear at first on explaining the procedure...He was attentive.
Beautiful clinic [at HRC Fertility-Pasadena]. Very elegant. Staff is nice. Parking available for free. Only downside is that this clinic is so busy. They receive a lot of international patients. Your appointment can run late due to the amount of patients they see...once had sent us the wrong summary of coverage. They had sent ya another couple insurance information summary.

He was thorough in explaining the procedure. He does not sugar coat things which I appreciate. He can be very busy though, and most of the time my appointments would be running late up to 30 minutes. This is the only thing that bothered me since I work and running late makes me even more late for work.

Because my insurance covered IUI and we had unexplained infertility with all of our pre lab work coming back fine we tried IUi with expectations it would work. But three rounds and all failed. At this point he has now strongly suggested IVf due to my age and how long we have been trying with no success.

[Dr. Jeffrey Nelson] is open to transferring two embryos at a time since we are open to the possibility of twins. I'm sorry you need fertility treatments. HRC is a peaceful place to go deal with hell and Dr Nelson a steady guide through.

In spite of how full the waiting room usually is, I am always seen promptly and even the phlebotomists remember me from the previous visit and can pick up from the previous conversation. My regular nurse always seems delighted to see us, and the Dr always takes as long as I need.
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
For egg retrieval we did one cycle. Treatment was 375 ml(?) follistim and 1 vial menapour. This resulted in 25 eggs, so the planned trigger was changed to a lupron trigger (unknown dose) to prevent OHSS. I did not get OHSS but it was still rough. By collection, follicles are about marble sized and stretching the uterus a lot.
Currently in the beginning of the FET cycle.

There is a sign in the elevator, no children in the office please. The lobby has multiple different chairs, which during egg retrieval bloat I found myself switching around until I found the comfortable one. No doubt everyone has a different "comfortable one" at that point so this is a great feature you might not think to look for. The lobby is also classy but comfortable.
No matter how full the lobby i always got seen promptly.
The coffee in the lobby is my only complaint. It's is not good. Bring your own if you care about that.

Each transfer [with Dr. Jeffrey Nelson] has been 2 embryos implanted each time...is very kind and has a soothing bedside manner. He walks you through each step of the procedure as he is doing it. I appreciate his kindness and empathy...I found that sometimes I had to do some research and bring it to him vs. him proactively recommending protocols...I underwent 3 unsuccessful IUIs, followed by 3 egg retrievals. My first transfer was a fresh transfer that resulted in a successful pregnancy but ultimately went into pre-term labor at 5 months which resulted in the loss of our daughter. In our subsequent transfers - we did the endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy and proceeded with FETs, the current cycle is a long cycle using Depot Lupron for 2 doses rather than the daily Lupron shot.
the financial team [at HRC] certainly has much room for improvement as messaging is inconsistent and they do not have the detail orientation and follow through that I would prefer when spending this amount of money...She [nurse] follows up in a timely manner, and I appreciate that response level. She's also worked with me to receive the best coverage possible as I am paying out of pocket and the costs can get quite high. For example - one dose of Lupron was $1400, and she helped to manage that.

Being that Dr. Nelson was softer spoken, he still made you feel hope even when you felt all things were lost. How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Upon first meeting Dr. Nelson he was a soft spoken doctor yet presented himself very honestly. Being novice in the IVF world I felt my husband and I were very fortunate cross paths with him.
Not knowing a lot about IVF, I truly was unaware of what this journey would take. Dr. Nelson sat down with my husband and I discussed everything that was presented in our case he approached the good the and and ugly. He explained some factors that he could see through testing yet kept reminding us the IVF is no guarantee and it can be a long process. Even though he presented the reality of what could come he was compassionate and brought hope to the issue and assured us he would work through all issues. I was diagnosed with a cyst that all my previous doctors had missed which unfortunately lead to me losing one of my ovaries further compromising the opportunity of having a child due to limited egg availability. Dr. Nelson presented his finding and then made sure I was referred to one of the highest ranked surgeon's in the area in hope I might be able to save my ovary (which was not the case in the end). Dr. Nelson's attention to care and keeping our future goals in mind throughout his treatment and our care.
Finding the specialist to treatment my cyst was not the only time Dr. Nelson went lengths to try to help us. During my second year of treatment and after 3 failed transfers, Dr Nelson suggested doing a procedure that would be working with a doctor at Yale University to determine if I had something else going on in the tissue. He truly was vested in a positive outcome!
Being that Dr. Nelson was softer spoken, he still made you feel hope even when you felt all things were lost. Going through many transfers that failed, each time he would take the time and speak with us and answer all questions without making us feel his time was limited or he had another patient.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Be patient even if you do not get the results you want in the beginning. That was the most trying part for my husband and I. IVF is truly a journey where patience grows and grace is extended to yourself and team around you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Dr. Nelson and staff we very compassionate and understanding through the journey of IVF. Dr
Nelson performed all scan and took the time to answer questions that arose prior, during and post each process. His staff were very understanding when things didnt arise in the outcome we hoped for and the staff and Dr. Nelson were genuinely invested in trying to have a success in the IVF process.
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
My IVF journey started not using Lupron in the beginning yet after the first failed transfer it was quickly added.
My journey began with a retrieval intended to freeze thr embryos at day 3. The retrieval cycle began with taking Birth control for a few weeks after my period, then I would begin stimulation drugs (Gonal F, Menupur) for a couple weeks and then 36 hours before the retrieval I took Pregnl. During the stimulation cycle I would have blood draws to monitor my levels and ultrasounds to monitor the follicle growth/development. The decision on what stipulation drugs prescribed was decided by Dr. Nelson based on what my case presented.
During the transfers, each one after the begin after being on birth control was a 3-week Lupron cycle (daily injections) and then at the last week of Lupron the dosage would be stepped down and Estradiol would begin. Ultrasounds and blood work would be taken to monitor estrogen and progesterone levels. As we got closer to the transfer date (I believe 2.5 weeks prior) progesterone dosing was started. My first 2 transfer cycles I was on oral and vaginal progesterone dosing and intramuscular injection after the transfer due to low levels of progesterone. Upon transfer 3-5 I was changed to micro dosage of vaginal progesterone which was slowing increased (25mg in the beginning) through the transfer date to 200mg along with IM injections of progesterone oil. This protocol was actually determined through the testing with Yale University and Dr. Nelson.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Connie)
During my journey I have had 3 different coordinators yet my most recent one (Connie) was phenomenal. She made herself available to be reached beyond the work hours, answered questions thoroughly and would get the answer if she didnt know. Sometimes during my visits at the office, Connie would be out and I would experience the difference between her responsiveness and others.
When medication orders (i had many throughout the multiple years) were not handled timely, Connie would do everything to ensure I had what was needed on time even if that meant lending me medication from the clinic where others had left me hanging and delaying my cycle due their inefficiency or lack if prioritizing.
Prior to Connie, the previous Cooridnators seemed to be stretched very thin and didnt communicate as thoroughly and effectively. I had times where my medication would be ordered in time or lack of communication about my blood results or lab orders being written correctly.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
Scheduling at the clinic was pretty simple, most of my appointments after the initial consultation were handled by my coordinator. There were times where I had to wait an unabsorbent amount of time due to scheduling issues.
Most labs were handled directly at the clinic which made things more efficient and the LVNs did a great job everytime.
One issue I experience was the lack of responsiveness from their financial department. I would go weeks sometimes before getting return calls. However, I was able to resolve the issue with their fiscal person upon leaving my appointment. It was frustrating that I could not get someone available on the phone to handle things more efficiently. That would be an area the clinic could improve.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
An IVF complete cycle with retrieval and frozen transfer to include ICSI and assisted hatching was approximately $18,000 which include a year of freezing of embryos. The medication was approximately ($5,000 for the egg stimulation cycle and $3500 for the transfer cycle).
Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
Dr. Nelson allowed my husband and I to determine how many embryos we transferred. He gave us medical opinion and discussed the potential risks of transferring multiple embroyos. Dr. Nelson did select the embroyos to be transferred however would always as if we had a preference of which embroyos we wanted, yet we deferred that decision as we respected his medical decision.

We did two separate rounds of clomid, tested for ovulation, at positive ovulation administered an HCG shot, did timed intercourse, and waited the 2-weeks to take a pregnancy test. When both of these rounds were negative pregnancy he had me come in more frequently for ultrasounds to check the progress during the cycle. By doing this we found the ovulation test was positive a full week before I was actually ovulating. I appreciated Dr. Nelson monitoring more closely and switching gears when finding I wasn’t reacting normally to ovulation testing.

It’s a beautiful clinic, comfortable, modern, and has a coffee and water station in the waiting area. Insurance doesn’t cover fertility treatments. Every appointment was for an ultrasound so each appointment cost $320. All of the medications associated with a clomid cycle are also not covered by insurance and generally cost about $500. We have only done times intercourse so I’m not sure what the cost for IUI is but I know it’s in the 1,000s.
Dr. Nelson comes across as genuine and kind. He has wonderful bedside manner and has always answered my questions with compassion and care. He seems very confident in what he does yet he has a calming presence at the same time (doesn't seem arrogant or stuck-up). Only downside is that I haven't gotten to see him as often as I would have liked as he has been traveling.... He also doesn't answer emails personally, you have to wait for the nurse
The clinic is gorgeous! one of the reasons I picked it was that I wanted to to be in a beautiful environment while undergoing this difficult process and HRC-Pasadena is stunning. The staff is very friendly and usually respond quickly. The waiting room is nice and cozy. Some hours it is packed and others not so much so you have to learn the flow if you'd rather avoid people. They are usually on-time, we have only had to wait around extensibly once out of the 20+ times we have been there.

Only downside is that I haven't gotten to see him as often as I would have liked as he has been traveling. IUI #1 was done by him, but baseline and followup ultrasounds have been done by nurses in his absence. Same thing has been happening with round #2. He also doesn't answer emails personally, you have to wait for the nurse or someone else from the team to talk to him, and then they relay the message. I would prefer if it was actually a bit more of a doctor/patient direct exchange.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Make sure you write down questions and bring to consults where he will be so that you can ask the doctor directly when he is in the room rather than have to wait for others to relay messages back and forth.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
The Nurses and staff at the clinic are amazing. Nurse Connie has been wonderful throughout the process. We are undergoing our second round of IUI and she has supported us through and has answered every question we've had. Other staff have not been so quick to respond which was difficult at times but once Connie became my contact person everything has been smooth sailing. Doctor's schedule tend to get a bit crammed/limited, especially if he is planning to be out of town. The pharmacy they use is incredible and the office is beautiful.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Consuelo Hernandez)
Connie has been absolutely amazing throughout the entire process. She is very responsive and one of the kindest people I have met and love that she got assigned to us. She always makes me smile and helps easy the anxiety when my husband and I are there for procedures. She is so compassionate and knows exactly what to say. She has actually been the highlight of my experience at this clinic.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
The pharmacy they work with is exceptional as well. Some of the weaknesses are that at times it has taken a certain staff member over three days to respond to important messages with time-sensitive questions. They resolved that by assigning someone else to our care but it was a bit frustrating at the time. Another one would be that there are signs that ask people to try not to bring children in the clinic as it can be difficult for some people, but there are days where there's lots of kids. Sometimes families with 4+ children which definitely deflates the spirit. I think staying open a bit later would be helpful as well.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
It is $2100 for IUI (includes ultrasounds, sperm washing, blood work if/when needed). It was about $450 for initial blood-work for STI and genetic testing which was sent to outside lab.
Even though he [Dr. Nelson] has thousands of patients he always treats net like my situation matters & he is extremely patient with me & answers all my questions. I never feel rushed!... I saw him numerous times for different stages so all of my protocols were different. I ended up finding an amazing research center that he referred me to & I also have twins using a surrogate. My surrogate loves him too that she referred other people to him as well
This office [HRC] is very clean & organized. They are so very timely. I’d say the only weakness about their office is their parking! They have too many patients for such a small parking lot. The office is very clean & everyone is very friendly. They play nice relaxing music & they offer coffee/tea.... I had different costs for different procedures. That is one negative about the clinic. Sometimes I feel like the costs changed week to week as if it wasn’t set in stone. Sometimes I felt like they were guessing & I over paid once.
How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Very respectful & patient. He always treats me like our situation matters & we never feel rushed. He answers questions thoroughly & at a level we can understand. I would definitely recommend him to others.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Write down list of questions so you get everything answered. I would bring a pen & paper with me to jot down notes of things he’d mention, but that’s just the OCD in me.

Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
I really like Dr. Nelson and would go back to him again. He’s warm and engaging and I felt very secure in going through this process with him. He explained things well and gave me a good idea of what to expect...I initially had a good number of follicles (I’m 41), I think we just did a more standard plan for egg harvesting. But then I only got 4 eggs, so he changes the regimen a bit and then I got 7 the next time.
The facility [HRC] is nice and clean and everyone is friendly. I usually didn’t have to wait very long to be seen, but it does get busier later in the morning. Some places have you pay for each exam, blood draw, etc, but this one has kind of a package deal, which I liked...Elizabeth was very personable, responsive, and helpful. You actually email the nurse and another email address so someone else can also help you if your nurse isn’t available, which happened once.

Start ASAP because some months are busier than others. I was lucky and got in right away when I called to make a consultation, but I think I just had lucky timing.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Dr. Nelson is very personable and I enjoyed working with him. He explained things clearly, let me know what to expect, and I feel like he really cares about his patients. He was understanding and accommodating to my hectic work schedule and made sure to amp things up so that I got enough eggs during my second retrieval.

Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
I think the biggest weakness is the number of patients Dr. Neslon treats now. When we first started seeing him it seemed it was easier to make appointments and their was more flexibility and availability...That being said, he will go out of his way to book Saturday appointments...We had male infertility. We used ICSI with IVF...He always makes me feel like a person with valid feelings and concerns. I like his personality. He always seems to remember details about our everyday life
A few years ago when we first started treatment they had a strict policy about not allowing children especially babies to the clinic. That was great while I was childless at the time and going through so many different feelings related to infertility...All of the cycle treatment appointments were under the IVF or embryo transfer bills. There was no seperate bills if needing extra appointment....The lobby room is huge

I think the biggest weakness is the number of patients Dr. Neslon treats now. When we first started seeing him it seemed it was easier to make appointments and their was more flexibility and availability. 2 years ago it seemed as if it was harder to book an appointment. That being said, he will go out of his way to book Saturday appointments if needed for the best treatment plan for your body.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
He his knowledgable about infertility and comes with years of experience.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
He always makes me feel like a person with valid feelings and concerns. I like his personality. He always seems to remember details about our everyday life not related to infertility. He connects with his patients and spouses.
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
We had male infertility. We used ICSI with IVF with a fresh transfer the first time. With the second transfer we did a frozen transfer. We used typical IVF treatment and adjusted medicines based upon my levels since infertility was not female related. We have used 2 eggs every time because of my age and the high number of embryos created.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
A few years ago when we first started treatment they had a strict policy about not allowing children especially babies to the clinic. That was great while I was childless at the time and going through so many different feelings related to infertility. I was disheartened to see that this changed during my last cycle.
The lobby room is huge and has space for all of their patients.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
All of the cycle treatment appointments were under the IVF or embryo transfer bills. There was no seperate bills if needing extra appointment.
Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
Yes, we were educated about the number used and the reasoning. We also, were informed that if something happened to one of the 2 embryos during unfreezing they would unfreeze another 2 and transfer 3 in that case or however many survived. That they would rather transfer 2 then just one. Again, BC i have a high number of embryos.
My doctor [Dr. Jefferey Nelson] is very knowledgeable and I trusted that he knew the best course of action. He explains things thoroughly and in a way to help me understand...He doesn't necessarily give you more information than you need to know. Ask questions and he will explain what he sees and what is going on very clearly. He makes me feel comfortable and I feel he is capable.
Nursing staff [at HRC] had failed at one point to tell my doctor that my OPK kit had changed. I came in the next day and told him and he was surprised he wasn't informed. They had also at one point forgotten to order a prescription and we had to rush it to the house...Each of my IUI were about $2,500 which included ultrasounds, medications (clomid, trigger shot, progesterone), and back to back IUI sessions with sperm wash. During my last IUI they had me pay per day rather than the package since that was slightly cheaper.
How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
My doctor is very knowledgeable and I trusted that he knew the best course of action. He explains things thoroughly and in a way to help me understand. This might be my issue more than his but during ultrasounds I tend to not ask questions and I think later I should have asked. He doesn't necessarily give you more information than you need to know. Ask questions and he will explain what he sees and what is going on very clearly. He makes me feel comfortable and I feel he is capable.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Ask questions and gather as much information as you can. Getting a hold of him to talk to him directly is hard. All communication is done through his support staff.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
His office support staff make you feel like a number but him as a doctor makes you feel like a human. The front desk and ladies that take you to the room make it seem like you are putting them out. His nurse who was on my case is delightful as well as Dr. Nelson.
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
My husband and I have unexplained infertility and sometimes anovulation. Because we are both on the younger side he elected to have us try IUI with Clomid. I started clomid on about day 3 of my cycle and then I took OPK and if I saw a kit change I came in for them to asses. If I didn't see a change then they would trigger shot me. They gave me the shot even with the kit change to ensure that I would ovulate. Then I came in within the next day or two and had one IUI done (sperm wash included). We used my husband's fresh sperm. The following day I would have a second IUI and sperm wash. From there they placed me on progesterone for two weeks just as a precaution (I didn't have progesterone level issues). I did 3 rounds of IUI just like this and all 3 times had negative results.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Liz)
Liz my primary nurse was much better than the others at the office. She was kind and encouraging. The other support staff were quick with me and pretty emotionless. Prior to seeing Liz or Dr. Nelson you very much just feel like a number being pushed through the system. There were also a few times where they didn't either order my medication or some thought they didn't when they did. They don't feel very organized or informed.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
It is a very nice facility that has all the bells and whistles. However, I would rather have a less attractive lobby and cheaper pricing. :) The facility is easy to find and parking is relatively easy as well.

Dr. Nelson has great bed side manners; he is very calm and collective. He likes to take his time to review your case and answer whatever questions you may have. He is compassionate and available to his patient's needs. I felt comfortable being his patient.... At times, I felt like my time with the doctor or his team members were not fully met, yet it was just another appointment. The nurse coordinators were not available to my needs or questions as I predicted or wished for. .
The clinic [HRC-Pasadena] is very clean and professional. They welcome you openly and allow you to address whatever questions you have prior setting up an appointment with one of their physicians. Weaknesses: I had issues with billing. They seem to not have a good communication with the rest of the team members/nurses. If I did not review my bills carefully I would have overpaid on certain visits.

Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
During my first cycle, which was a fresh transfer after a 5-day egg retrieval I resulted in my first pregnancy; however, I felt that my body was too exhausted to take on a pregnancy after being through so much hormones and treatment. It would have progressed to my knowledge if we froze the embryos and did a Frozen Embryo Transfer vs. a fresh one. On my second cycle, we did a FET with injections [estrogen and progesterone injections] along with baby aspirin and levothyroxine. This cycle did result in a pregnancy, however at 6 weeks into the pregnancy resulted in another miscarriage.

Combination of both IVF cycles we paid about 25K [$25,000]
Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
My RE transferred 2 embryos per cycle; I asked what his preference was whether 1 or 2 he suggested 2 since I am young and have no fertility issues.
Dr Nelson thouroughly reviewed the mounds of medical records I had provided from my primary care provider. His approach is truly holistic, which I appreciate. He has a warm bedside manner... He was well informed about my history and treaded gently, but directly about the sensitive nature of infertility. I liked his individualistic and holistic approach. He explained things thoroughly. I think the o lu weakness was punctuality in making the appointments
Aesthetically, the clinic [HRC - Pasadena] has warm and calming appearance. It looks a little like you’re in a sophisticated hotel lobby. The front desk staff and the flebotomíst are cordial. There are a ton of patients who come to this clinic so it get crowded quickly.... Connie [nurse] is warm and caring. She responds so quickly to emails and correspondences that when emails are responded to a couple days late, you begin to panic a little. I would have liked that she kept track of all of the information better and provided more follow up.

I think the o lu weakness was punctuality in making the appointments. My husband and I chalked that up to him trying to be as thorough and present with each patient. He always asked us if we had more questions and was very patient with us. We never felt rushed. I’m assuming he provides the same level of care to all of his patients.

I believe he used the agonist protocol. Higher dosage than typical. 150 Menopur, 375 Gonal F and Cetrotide. Higher dosage because of my age, I believe. I produced 10 eggs among the which 4 matured. Three were fertilized. But none made it past day 7.

About 9000 retrieval and fresh transfer, 550 for analgesia, 1500 for ICSI
About 6000 for medication
[Dr. Jeffrey Nelson] was very personable and kind during treatment, but his nursing staff were chaotic, disorganized, prone to mistakes and unapologetic. At one point he gave me his personal cell number, but even then there were miscommunications and missed messages...is a very nice man who has a ton of experience...My issue is that his staff are a mess and if he hasn't seen fit to fix that, that is a severe flaw on his part. When there was a huge mistake made with my protocol, he did not take any time to explain potential effects to ease my mind. I was just left hanging, completely scared and seemingly alone.
It was around $13k for the retrieval process [at HRC]. Even if you had insurance, you had to put that amount down prior to the cycle. You would be reimbursed for anything that ended up being covered by insurance...This is a busy clinic. It is a nice looking office and very clean and comfortable...It has free parking...Justina and Chloe [nurses] both made a number errors over the course of 5 months. Justina's error caused my cycle to be cancelled because I was given instruction to take my trigger shot several days too early. She refused to apologize and argued with me that it wasn't her fault, despite the fact that I had it in writing from her. Chloe sent me another patient's surgery instructions.

Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
This is a busy clinic. It is a nice looking office and very clean and comfortable (at least for the women). It has free parking, which is a huge plus. It's in Pasadena, which is super convenient to folks on the eastside.
Cons: It sometimes felt like I was in another country. Patients bring several family members with them and they camp out with big bags of food and drinks and talking loudly on their phones. There were times when there was nowhere to sit, it was so crowded. Lots of people ignore the signage asking them not to bring children into the clinic.
Somehow, during the intake process, I was profiled and given the Chinese-speaking nurses and staff. I only saw this later when I requested all my files.
The room where the men leave their specimens is run down, poorly appointed and not very clean (it seems this is the norm for most clinics, unfortunately). My fiancé reported being treated poorly and having to overhear one of the nurses talking about her tuna salad sandwich just outside the door. A bit challenging to get in the right frame of mind while having to listen to people talk about their lunch.
Their finance office is a nightmare. It took weeks to get a refund for the balance of services not used once I decided to change clinics. I felt like they played hot potato with me, then acted like it was my fault for not being able to intuit who I needed to reach out to. Their expectation that I should be an expert in the inner workings of their clinic was mind blowing.

It was around $13k for the retrieval process. Even if you had insurance, you had to put that amount down prior to the cycle. You would be reimbursed for anything that ended up being covered by insurance.
Medication was separate. They recommended Freedom Pharmacy, but did not give any tips or suggestions on the best way to maximize your insurance benefit. My meds were $7k through insurance, which ate up most of my benefit. If I had paid cash, it would have cost less and left me more insurance benefit for clinic costs.

Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
For my IUI’s I took Clomid and then the HCG trigger shot. The Clomid made me very emotional. I cried constantly and at the smallest thing.
For my IVF I took Ganirelix, Endometrin, Menopur, Progesterone, Methylprednisolone, Estradiol, Pregnyl HCG and Follistim. I was able to produce a significant number of viable eggs using this protocol. The side effects included severe bloating, pain at injection site, cramping, backache, full and sore breasts, headaches, fatigue, nausea and an uncontrollable roller coaster of emotions.

HRC Pasadena is overall an amazing community of people. They truly go out of their way to make sure that you, as the patient, are taken care of and supported. The fact that everything is done at one location makes the process a lot easier. Rarely have I had to wait long for an appt. On the occasion that they are very busy, they are apologetic and quick to get you in a room. The level of privacy and discretion is reassuring, and I’ve never felt like just another patient. My husband loves the coffee bar in the waiting room!

Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
Given my age and our previous failed IUI cycles, my Dr. was willing to transfer 2 embryos. We talked extensively about the risks of multiples, for both mother and babies. He was very upfront and honest with us regarding our concerns. We all (Dr. Nelson, myself and my husband) agreed that our best chance in conceiving would be to take a more aggressive approach and transfer 2 embryos.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at HRC Fertility.
On one occasion I had a Sat. morning appt. for blood work only, and then I was to start taking my birth control pill that night (if I remember correctly.) After my blood was drawn I sat in the waiting room for quite a while, expecting to be called by a nurse to be given my prescription. I had already been emailed by the nurse earlier in the week, so I expected the prescription to be there for me. After quite some time had passed, I inquired at the front desk. It took over an hour for them to be able to contact someone who could prescribe the medication, as there was no one in the office able to do so. What should have been a very short appt. ended up lasting a couple of hours, and I was very stressed that if I didn’t get my meds in time the whole cycle would be cancelled. When you add in the fact that I live an hour and a half from the clinic, it was a very stressful day. We eventually got it figured out and everything was fine. This was definitely an exception to my normal experiences with the clinic and never happened again.
Dr Nelson is a kind man, very positive and warm In his interactions. He decided to go with the same protocol as my previous doctor since that had worked for us. I don't know that he's fully up on what all the newest evidence is but I felt that he was doing everything he could for me...He was kind and compassionate and spoke to me in a reasonable way.
The office [HRC - Pasadena] was very busy so at times I did have to wait a long time in the doctors office...Very expensive. They charged 500 per sonogram and do a sonogram at the start of each cycle. There are lots of "extras" at hrc so so far 1 egg retrieval and 2 frozen transfers were around 20000...We had three embryos on day 5 and 6. The lab froze one by itself and 2 together in one vial. We were really disappointed in this because it meant we had to refreeeze one of the embryos since it had to be thawed with its partner.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Be aware you may have to wait for a long time for your appointments.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
He was kind and compassionate and spoke to me in a reasonable way. The office was very busy so at times I did have to wait a long time in the doctors office
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
Same protocol as my previous doctor. Bcps, gonal-f, menopur, cetrotide. I had a poorer response this time wth not as many eggs and so he upped the dosage a ton, which helped somewhat.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Justina wang )
Initially I was assigned a different nurse but immediately before retrieval she let me know she was transferring jobs to the neighboring surgical center. Justina is a fine nurse but has some communication issues. I'm not sure if it's a problem due to English not being her first language or simply a communication style but I find some of her email communications vague when I've asked for a very specific response.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
The clinic is clean and well appointed. There are magazines and a coffee machine in the lobby. The front desk people are nice but don't always have a smile on their faces. The phlebotomist are good at their jobs. For men, delivering sperm samples is a little weird because they have to walk by people in the lobby once they've produced a sample

Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
We wanted eSet. He seemed more inclined to push multiples, even asking one more time immediately before transfer.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at HRC Fertility.
We asked for eSet from the beginning. We had three embryos on day 5 and 6. The lab froze one by itself and 2 together in one vial. We were really disappointed in this because it meant we had to refreeeze one of the embryos since it had to be thawed with its partner.
He [Dr. Nelson] was extremely frank, which I appreciated. At my first appointment we discussed my husband and my medical history and what attempts we had been making to this point to conceive. Dr Nelson listened to us and then very clearly stated how we would proceed. It was kinda like "oh, you want to have a baby, here's how we're going to do it." No bs, no voodoo.
I was paired with a nurse [at HRC Pasadena], Justina Wang, who I could contact at any time via phone or email. This service was extremely comforting. Both Dr. Nelson and Nurse Wang were just generally friendly and approachable....I had a little mixup with one of the accounting ladies. She told me that the HSG that I was scheduled to have would cost upwards of 10k out of pocket and would require anesthesia. I'm not sure what happened, I guess she just got confused. It kinda spooked me though. Turns out it was more like a couple hundred bucks and felt like a slightly more annoying pap.

If you want to discuss how your vegan diet or meditation practices are impacting your fertility he's probably not the guy for you.

Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
We started with a series of diagnostic tests. Blood work and sperm samples, etc. Once everything checked out ok the plan was to have an HSG and the following cycle to start with IUI - because of my relative young age and no obvious problems. We agreed that we could afford to do the shots vs. Chlomid, which seemed to have better results as well. I got pregnant naturally after the HSG so I didn't proceed with the original treatment plan.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Justina Wang)
Justina was easy to contact and had constant updates for me. This was especially appreciated when I was anxious to get test results or schedule appointments.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
It's pretty schmancy on the inside. There's parking! The waiting room can be somewhat hectic at times but it's generally a nice atmosphere and the people are perfectly friendly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
Blood work was more expensive there. I think it was $30/ visit. Much cheaper to go to labcorp. Our first visit was a couple hundred bucks.

How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
I will always be grateful to Dr. Nelson. He was integral in the creation of our beautiful little daughter. My husband and I did not want to do ICSI or PGS. He was willing to allow us to have our choice and created the best possible chances for our fresh transfer. He has a good sense of humor, too. He said my husband had "Beautiful sperm" when referring to how his morphology rating came back.
My HSG showed polyps in my uterus. I remember feeling disappointed that were going to lose some time to address them. He said he wanted to make my uterus had the best chances for transfer.
We had 4 embryos of 12 fertilize naturally, and one did not divide. He transferred the remaining 3 on day 3.
I appreciated that he did my ultrasounds himself. I also appreciated that he had me come in frequently for labs to make sure that my hormones were right. He gave us a report that showed that I had 0.43 AMH, which could mean that I'd have a lower chance based on my age category. I found that chart helpful, and was happy that the med protocol that he chose for me helped me produce more eggs than the statistics.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
IVF is a difficult process, but it's all worth it when you take your baby home.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Dr. Nelson did all of my ultrasounds himself. He seemed genuinely happy to see my follicles growing. When I developed an SCH and had bleeding, he was very reassuring that everything would be okay. There are many more things. This man was DEFINITELY our person!
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
Hysteroscopy/Polypectomy/D&C. Augmentin post procedure.
Mock Transfer. He explained that this would help him be successful in placing the embryo in the right place with no guess work.
Antagonist protocol. Follistim 375IU, Menopur 75, Ganirelix, Pregnyl, doxycycline, steroid, estrace, PIO 5mg/ml, once a day, Endometrin 100mg bid, baby aspirin. Plus prenatal with DHA.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Germaine Underbrink)
Germaine was not very responsive to my emails and calls. I had to call or email repeatedly until I got a response. She also ordered the wrong syringes for my progesterone in oil, and I had to scramble to find them at a drugstore. She did not update the prescription, and the refills came with the wrong syringes again. I had a lot of back and fourth between Freedom Fertility because it almost happened a third time.
Describe your experience with HRC Fertility.
Strengths: Good SART reports. I highly recommend Dr. Nelson.
Weaknesses: Financial department made billing mistakes, long wait times.
I appreciated being able to make early morning appointments, especially for labs, because I needed to go to work afterword. I loved the phlebotomist! What a sweet lady. Always found the vein. No pain.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility.
$13,000- our portion of the insurance
Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
I was surprised that he wanted to transfer 3 embryos on day 3, but it worked, so it was the right call.
The only thing I will fault him [Dr Jeffrey Nelson] for is that my initial ultrasound showed very low potential for egg retrieval. That month was a bit low, maybe because of stress or sickness. Since this is my first time, I didn't know any better and trusted the doctor when he said this was not the best indicator. FALSE!!! It can happen that results are better than expected but I suspect that percentage is exceedingly low. Had I known, I would have put off the egg retrieval to a following cycle where I would have better results.
Well, even if I had a positive outcome, I would not go back [to HRC Pasadena]...Facilities are ok, location is convenient. Perhaps if you have particular issues, one of the doctors may be able to specifically help. Also, Dr Nelson seemed much nicer than my other doctors. However this is outweighed by their unprofessionalism (giving me over optimistic treatment), and general incompetence (mischeduling appointments, not providing timely information). Some may say this is because I had a negative outcome. Well, even if I had a positive outcome, I would not go back.
How was your experience with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
A bit scatter brained it seemed? During our second appointment, he forgot who I was even though we'd had an hour long initial consultation one month ago. At the very least, please review the chart. However, did come across as a nice guy. The only thing I will fault him for is that my initial ultrasound showed very low potential for egg retrieval. I blame the doctor for suggesting we proceed when initial results showed poor probability, implying that they wanted business more than they cared about me
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeffrey Nelson (retired) at HRC Fertility?
Very nice guy, very caring in person
Describe the protocols Jeffrey Nelson (retired) used in your cycles at HRC Fertility and their degree of success.
The pill initially then menopur and follistim. Follow on doctors were surprised by my dosage implying he knew I was low and was trying to stimulate aggressively. Otherwise, a quite typical 10 day stimulation, 12 day retrieval.
Describe your experience with your nurse at HRC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Germaine Underbrink)
Originally, I would say horrible. Now I realise they are horrible to average. As a highly educated person paying a lot of money for treatment, I expected a more professional and organised staff. Instead, I had to consistently be on top of my own treatment, remind the staff of certain issues they were not aware of or forgot, and in general, they made a stressful process that much worse. I've since come to realise that this is true of most clinics but Dr Nelson's team was particularly bad. In their defence, they had personal issues of which I was made aware later but if that is the situation, please take time off or allow another person to provide primary care. In particular, I was frustrated that when Germaine was away, I was unable to receive information about my treatment. What is the point of going to a clinic with several doctors if the nursing staff can't handle jobs for each other??

Describe the specific things that went wrong at HRC Fertility.
1) appointment was mischeduled
2) DNA test was not as comprehensive as could be (even though same price)
3) first round of drug prescriptions was incomplete
4) never called or contacted when they said they would
5) I hate their "out of office" response which occurs even when the office is closed until next business day... Therefore when they truly are away, it's hard to tell
6) Misleading optimistic information on outcome
He [Dr. Jeffrey Nelson] is very knowledgable and experienced. My husband and I felt comfortable in his care. He wasn't pushy when we requested to try clomid treatments for almost a year before taking another measures. He also made sure that both my husband and I had all tests done to make sure there wasn't an "obvious" reason for our infertility...Dr. Nelson had a nice bedside manner and definitely spent time with me to answer all my questions. But- I did feel the wait time was too long even when I arrived to my scheduled appointment early.
I LOVED the nurses at HRC. Even the nurse who drew my blood was incredible. The women were so warm and compassionate. On rough days they always gave me a hug. I felt comfortable calling or emailing at anytime and it never took long to hear a reply...My biggest complaint was the wait time... I get very claustrophobic and it was upsetting to me that I would arrive to my appointment well in advance and then they'd shuttle me into my room where I would wait sometimes 30min +. It was also uncomfortable since I was unclothed from the waist down.

Be prepared to carve out a large chunk of time for your normal schedule once you start treatments... the average wait time in the clinic seems a bit long.

I cannot be certain how much we spent but something I'm unhappy with is they offered an upfront plan where you paid 5K extra to get a second chance at the IVF process if it wasn't successful the first time. We were successful so it was a loss of 5K. Way too much of a gamble.
Describe Jeffrey Nelson (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at HRC Fertility.
I was a bit hesitant to transfer 2-embryos but Dr. Nelson said given my age since I had never successfully gotten pregnant the chances for multiples was low. If I had known more about 5-day blasts and how "strong" they were I probably would have only transferred one. I became pregnant with twin boys.
Dr. Nelson took his time at each appointment and we never felt rushed. He wanted to understand our situation thoroughly and asked a lot of questions. He was supportive and positive but not with false hope. He was respectful of my decisions and preferences in regards to medications...took his time and seemed invested in our outcome and experience. He listened to my preferences. He did not sugar coat expectations but stayed positive for a successful outcome.

He [Dr. Jeffrey Nelson] was a kind and knowledgable doctor. However, I did feel like the visit was a bit rushed. I would have appreciated learning more about options aside from IVF and IUI.
