Dr. Kulp-Makarov is a sensitive and compassionate provider for same-sex couples looking to get pregnant using donor sperm or a sperm donor...is well-versed with LGBTQ issues...seeing way too many patients and is terrible about follow-up, or really even returning after the first visit or two
[At New Hope Fertility Center] I was only informed that the donor sperm had extremely low mobility (enough to warrant a refund) on the day of my IUI procedure, when they were about to inject it. At the same time...the doctor also notified me that there was a genetic issue the lab had overlooked that might cause a genetic mutation in the potential fetus
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Dr. Kulp-Makarov is a sensitive and compassionate provider for same-sex couples looking to get pregnant using donor sperm or a sperm donor. She is well-versed with LGBTQ issues and very respectful of those communities and the different situations engendered by each couple that comes into her practice. However, she's also seeing way too many patients and is terrible about follow-up, or really even returning after the first visit or two. I was very disappointed, ultimately, in the care I received from her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Go to a different clinic.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
The clinic felt like a factory. I only saw Dr. Kulp-Makarov one or two times, during my first visits, and received follow-up instructions from a whole host of other people whom I had never met. When it came time for my procedure, Dr. Kulp-Makarov wasn't the one performing the IUI... she wasn't even in the room. Names were called from large screens and it felt like we were all just cogs in the machine.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
She monitored my cycle by doing blood tests and ultrasounds on specific days leading up to ovulation; this helped her ensure that she'd be performing the IUI insemination at the right time, when it would have the most chance of being successful. Before scheduling the IUI, she strongly encouraged me to get a test that used dye to determine whether there were any blockages in my Fallopian tubes or uterus. On the day of the procedure, Dr. Makarov's associates (she was not present) injected me with an ovulation trigger shot before performing the IUI insemination.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
Good staff but way overworked and seemed to be a huge turnover rate--- I rarely saw the same nurse more than once, rarely received email communications from one single nurse. I had no idea who I was supposed to be seeing, or consulting with, or receiving care from, every time I went into the clinic.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
Strengths: quick timetable; lot of successful treatments; relatively affordable; nice facility; very popular Weaknesses: feels like you're a number; factory; very mechanical and alienated and sterile; little consistency in terms of doctors/ nurses providing care; unclear instructions about treatment; sometimes conflicting instructions and radically different treatment plans from different doctors

Describe the specific things that went wrong at New Hope Fertility Center.
I was only informed that the donor sperm had extremely low mobility (enough to warrant a refund) on the day of my IUI procedure, when they were about to inject it. At the same time, within a few moments of giving me the first bad news, the doctor also notified me that there was a genetic issue the lab had overlooked that might cause a genetic mutation in the potential fetus. This was alarming to hear when I was literally on the table, about to get inseminated, and gave me little time to carefully reflect on what to do with that new information, let alone discuss it with my partner. The doctor who performed the procedure also made a significant change to the plan provided by my assigned doctor (Makarov)-- she injected me with an ovulation trigger shot that I hadn't anticipated or wanted before the procedure, which caused me a lot of pain for days afterwards; and she also informed me that the procedure would only be done one time (Makarov told me she does it two times per cycle, to maximize the patient's chances of conceiving).

How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Dr. Makarov is a busy doctor and a woman of few words. She does not have great bedside manner and is not the kind of doctor who focuses on warm fuzzy feelings. However, Dr. Makarov is incredibly intelligent, knowledgeable, and straightforward. It is clear that she knows what she is doing. She also took into account all of my risks associated with hormones and treated me appropriately, which I am incredibly thankful for. She is not the warmest or most outgoing provider, but she knows what she is doing and the treatment that she chose for us worked!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Don't expect her to be very warm, friendly, or talkative. She is very straightforward and will answer questions that you have, but you may not be talking with her for very long. Don't be put off by this, though, because she is incredibly smart and knows her stuff. It worked for us.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
This clinic is very busy and popular. You can tell that they have a LOT of patients. Because of this, communication is lacking and can be improved. We traveled from out of state for treatment and there were times that different nurses contacted me with different information. When I had the same nurse respond to me a couple of times, then I definitely felt more like a human. I also felt that everything was kept pretty organized when it came to my embryos and procedures.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
For the egg retrieval I took Clomid, Letrozole, and Follistim. I traveled from out of state for treatment, so I had to do all of my ultrasounds and lab work at the local hospital. I had frequent monitoring appointments and dose adjustments based off of the results. I used a small dose of Orilissa to prevent early ovulation, then used the trigger shot when instructed. We traveled to NYC for the egg retrieval. For the frozen embryo transfer cycle, we did a modified natural approach. I think Dr. Makarov initially wanted me to take letrozole to induce ovulation, but I ended up growing a dominant follicle on my own without the letrozole, so we went with modified natural instead. I did not take any medications up until the trigger shot. I did monitoring based on my natural menstrual cycle, used a trigger shot once the dominant follicle was large enough, and then used estradiol, progesterone suppositories, and progesterone-in-oil injections before and after the transfer.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
I communicated with nurses through mostly email. There is one email address for all the nurses, so you never know which one will specifically respond. Some of the nurses were more compassionate than others.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
Strengths: The doctors are knowledgeable and the clinic itself is located in such an amazing part of NY. Central Park is literally across the street. The clinic is also very nice inside - I like the fish tanks. Weaknesses: Communication could be better.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
I did my monitoring locally since I traveled for treatment, but when I traveled there I did see TV screens that told you your place in line.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center.
Management of outside monitoring is expensive at $500 per month. This is in addition to the bloodwork and ultrasounds that I had done locally. The egg retrieval was $1850, ICSI and fertilization was $3600, and FET was $3500 I think. PGS testing was expensive, I think around $6500.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr Makarov is nice however she is not easily available to her patients. I met with her via telehealth for initial consultation. She did do my initial in office exam however I have not seen her again during my treatments. She has only called me personally one time during my treatment and she seemed ver detached and unaware of my individual treatment...while there for an egg retrieval she had no idea who I was. She hasn’t performed any of my retrieval procedures and has only spoken to me personally one time about my treatment plan.
[New Hope Fertility Center] Clinic is large and clean and has many of the most advanced technology when it comes to fertility treatment. I do like that they have big screen monitors that display the areas patients should report to. They provide fruit infused water and a variety of coffee and tea selections. The mints are a nice treat. The recovery area after a procedure is very quiet and relaxing and the nurses provide juice water and light snacks while you recover.

I rarely saw Dr Kulp. The PA did my IUI and also delivered the news of the chemical pregnancy of my transfer and I was in shock. There was no warning and it wasn’t delicately handled. When I asked Dr Kulp for answers on why my transfer didn’t work she said it could have been due to the embryo ( which was a PGT tested class A embryo)...I didn’t feel like she was invested in me as a person. You need to come with questions because she won’t really explain if you don’t ask her...
I felt like there were a lot of women in the clinic [New Hope Fertility Center] and that I was just a number. The nurses were kind but I rarely saw Dr Kulp...the way they delivered the news was a little too matter of fact. I wish it was handled a lot more delicately and I wish they gave support in any case of miscarriage or unsuccessful transfer. Also I wish they gave more information on why it failed and what the next steps were. And it was very difficult to get hold of the billing dept. There are a lot of people and it’s difficult to tell who takes care of what. But I will say they did a great job with the egg retrieval.
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
She was kind and respectful. But I didn’t feel like she was invested in me as a person. You need to come with questions because she won’t really explain if you don’t ask her. She was great during the retrieval but I barely saw her before the transfer until moments before which to me was the most important part. When I had a chemical pregnancy she called me to explain that it could have been the embryo or my lining. But I was devastated and she didn’t really give the next course of action. She only brought up the ERA after I suggested it and to do another biopsy. While I did get pregnant I was kind of in shock that it didn’t stick and no one told me what to expect after getting the first HCG test. They simply sent me an email. I had no idea that it had to double ( I found out on my own ) and was in shock when it didn’t. She didn’t really explain the whole process and I wish she prepared me more for what could happen.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
I wish she would explain the process to the patients more. Especially for the transfer. What to expect… for example levels to double and a possible pregnancy or it not working. Also I would have appreciated it if she gave me a better course of action next.

Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
We initially wanted to come in to thaw my 6 eggs from 2019. But she suggested another retrieval. I was hesitant but went ahead ( warning if you do a retrieval check with your insurance if they will cover it if you already have eggs. I had to battle the insurance ). In November I was put onto Gonal 125- 250ml for around 10 days along with Clomid I think. I had ultrasounds around every 2-3 days and blood tests too. The retrieval went smooth and I was lucky to get 20 eggs. 14 of which matured and 12 fertilized. We got 5 embryos that made it to blastocyst. Of which only 2 were PGT normal. I was surprised we got so many eggs but only 2 normal embryos but she said it was a good number for 42. I would actually recommend her for the retrieval. in December I did a hysteroscopy and had endometritis. So she gave me doxy and I was really allergic to it. My stomach couldn’t handle it. So she switched me to cipro which I didn’t realize is one of the strongest antibiotics. I would not recommend this because I was on it for Dece and in Jan they cleared me to do the transfer and said my endo was mild. But they continued me on cipro with promethium and estrace up until the day before the transfer. I waited around 3 hours for the transfer and there were several other women in the room. 2 of which had around 3-4 transfers that failed from her. That to me was a red flag. I stayed positive and did the transfer and got pregnant a week later! My HCG level was 18. Which I didn’t know was low and didn’t know it was supposed to double. The PA called on Monday telling me my HCG was 15 and that I might be having a miscarriage. I was devastated alone at work and besides myself. I called my husband and Fighting back tears I picked myself up and went back to work. It was the worst day of my life. I prayed that the baby would be saved but at that moment I knew that the baby was gone :( she told me to come back on Wednesday to confirm. I did the blood test on Wednesday and sure enough my HCG went to 6 or something. Dr Kulp finally called me and said I was having a chemical pregnancy and that I would be having a miscarriage soon. That was the worst week of my life. She didn’t explain why it didn’t work she said it could have been the grade A Embryo which we paid like $1000 for. I thought it could have been my lining or the medication. I don’t know. But after that I lost faith in New Hope and decided to get a second opinion.
Describe your experience with your nurse at New Hope Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Olga and Nnennaya )
The nurses were all very nice and helpful. However I must admit Rosario the PA was nice and but not necessarily tactful. I had an IUI Done by her and just before the procedure while I was on the table she mentioned that the specimen was not A lot. And said I could do the IUI or change my mind. I wish she called me to tell me this before I did the IUI. She also called me about the miscarriage. And while she was nice I wish she was a little more gentle in the way she delivered the news.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
New hope is good for egg retrievals I feel. But it is a busy clinic and I felt like a number. It felt like they were all about the $$, I wish they discussed the entire procedure of IVF and possible outcomes good and bad better. And prepared patients for all outcomes and i wish they were more gentle with the way they delivered bad news.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
There usually was a line in the morning. It always was really busy and would have been nice if we could schedule appts so that we could be seen on time instead of waiting. Sometimes it would be quick other times id wait an hour.

I’m not sure as my insurance covered it. I paid $360 for my IUI and retrieval and probably another $200 for the transfer ( after insurance)

I met Dr. Makarov once for my initial consultation and then never saw her again during my entire egg freezing cycle. Every time I asked if I could talk to her, I was told I'd have to wait 30 minutes or I could speak to a nurse now, so I'd obviously just speak to the nurse. But because different nurses (though all very nice) did my monitoring each time, it definitely felt a bit impersonal and I never felt like I knew exactly what was going on, what the drugs were doing to me, where I was in my cycle...
The nurses [at New Hope Fertility Center] were all very kind and supportive, and made the whole process easier...Except for the first two visits, my monitoring appointments went fairly quickly and I usually didn't have to wait too long. It was convenient that there was a Brooklyn monitoring location, though inconvenient that I had to call/e-mail to make an appointment there and nobody ever responded to my e-mails...
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
She was very nice when I met her. I didn't feel rushed and she was sure to answer all our questions about egg freezing and the process. But I realize now that I didn't even know all the questions to ask, because there was a lot about the process and my body and potential risks that I just didn't know, so I do wish I had been given a more thorough overview of what was involved and what could happen both during and after an egg retrieval.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Do your research and write all your questions down ahead of time, and maybe be upfront about the type of communication you want and expect in order to feel safe and supported. I remember a nurse telling me she had developed OHSS after her cycle and had been in a lot of pain (this was after I was dealing with my OHSS symptoms), and she said "I remember calling my doctor in the middle of the night crying!", and I thought, "I wouldn't even know how to get a hold of my doctor."
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
I met Dr. Makarov once for my initial consultation and then never saw her again during my entire egg freezing cycle. Every time I asked if I could talk to her, I was told I'd have to wait 30 minutes or I could speak to a nurse now, so I'd obviously just speak to the nurse. But because different nurses (though all very nice) did my monitoring each time, it definitely felt a bit impersonal and I never felt like I knew exactly what was going on, what the drugs were doing to me, where I was in my cycle. I'd just wait for an email to tell me what to do and then I'd do it. And if I had questions about my prescription and whatnot, I would email back and rarely get a response, or a few times I called and was told a nurse would call me back and nobody ever did (until I called again and pleaded to speak to someone immediately). I know the clinic was dealing with a lot of staffing issues because of Covid which isn't their fault, so my experience might be a result of that. But I will also say that on the day of my retrieval, I was told for the first time that I would very likely have to do another cycle as it's more common for people to do 2+ cycles than only one. I had no idea, as I'd never done this before, and had not budgeted for more than one cycle, and suddenly felt very confused and unprepared as I was heading into my procedure. Luckily, we retrieved a good amount of eggs so I'm not doing another retrieval for now, but I felt very in the dark about that and like more information was just being sprung on me. And finally, I developed OHSS after my procedure which I had never heard of and was not warned about at all during my weeks of monitoring, I was just given a one-sheet on it as I was leaving the clinic after my procedure. I was in a lot of pain and discomfort and nearly fainted twice in my home and was terrified something was seriously wrong with me. After calling several times, I was able to speak to a nurse who was very kind, but again, I would have appreciated speaking to my doctor about any of this. I wasn't even told firmly that my diagnosis was OHSS until I just asked them flat out. Again, the staff I spoke to were always nice, and I want to be understanding in these abnormal times we're in, but I definitely wish I felt more supported than I did.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
We did a mini-IVF cycle for egg-freezing because of my (relatively) young age, doing a combo of Gonal-F injections and Clomid + Letrozole for about 10 days before my trigger injection and then egg retrieval procedure. It was very successful and we were able to freeze 22 eggs. I developed OHSS afterwards which was very painful and uncomfortable and was prescribed Cabergoline.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
The nurses were all very kind and supportive, and made the whole process easier. I really appreciate them.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
The clinic was fine. It's convenient there are two floors, and I actually found it was organized fairly well. Except for the first two visits, my monitoring appointments went fairly quickly and I usually didn't have to wait too long. It was convenient that there was a Brooklyn monitoring location, though inconvenient that I had to call/e-mail to make an appointment there and nobody ever responded to my e-mails and it was usually after hours when I was able to try and call.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
I appreciated the "window" for monitoring appointments and I usually didn't have to wait too long, and the nurses were all very nice. The Brooklyn location had no wait at all but you do have to make a specific appointment for it, which is a bit less convenient only because if the night before I realized Brooklyn would be much easier, there would be no way for me to contact them to make an appointment (rarely would someone respond quick enough to an email, and their office/phone would be closed).

In total, out of pocket (my insurance covered maybe 1 medication), it was about $7,000 for one egg freezing cycle, not including storage beyond the 6 months.
What specific things went wrong at New Hope Fertility Center?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at New Hope Fertility Center.
Just once, I was told to continue taking a certain medication but they hadn't called a refill in to the pharmacy. So I tried calling New Hope, but it was the weekend so they were closed, so I e-mailed them, and someone was able to respond and call in the prescription. It was resolved quickly, but still an oversight.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Markov is great, Patient and kind. She cares about her patients success...She looked over worked or very busy but once she saw me she smiled and we.just talked while she did procedure. Made me feel relaxed and comfortable...You might only see her once. Get to know Olga she works very well with Dr Markov and can answer your questions by asking Dr Markov and calling you back...
Cross and lateral Communication amongst staff [at New Hope Fertility Center] is horrible and it delays treatment in women. Staff members work like they are only ones handling case and don't review records before giving patient a call. Too many people have access to patient information and access to patient records. Mistakes happen no one talks to each other they just jump in click information and pick up information...Nursing staff gave fake compassion. Alot of aww, I bet, wow, I'm sorry, then in same breath how can I help you? They don't listen. I had to repeat myself multiple times before they understood what I was asking....

When I saw Dr Markov she was kind and a regular person. She looked over worked or very busy but once she saw me she smiled and we.just talked while she did procedure. Made me feel relaxed and comfortable.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Write down questions to ask doctor Markov. You might only see her once. Get to know Olga she works very well with Dr Markov and can answer your questions by asking Dr Markov and calling you back
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Dr. Markov is great, Patient and kind. She cares about her patients success. NHFC support team is not, support team delays included wrong information given. No support to person. Olga is great, kind, caring and direct, but, she is only one person. Support staff treat this process like it's a paycheck..patient feels like a number or just a justification for support staff to be paid. Otherwise doctors are great knowledge and kind it's just support staff not.

Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
NHFC doctors are there strength. They are precise and data driven for success thats great for patients success. I think they need more doctors and less support staff. Or maybe they should hire med students as support staff. My experience was uneventful unfortunately, but, I feel confident the doctors did everything they could do.

Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.
Only 1 of my 6 embryos survived to day 5 so choice was natural selection
How competent was New Hope Fertility Center at LGBTQ+ care?
NHFC should ask people that identify as LGBTQ+ if they are use to or prefer to be inserted for routine scans. This answer can let doctors know the person pain tolerance level for invasive procedures. Get more information about person in rainbow just don't assume because they present feminine or masculine or are over 40 that they have been inserted many times in life. Not everyone journey is.same. talk to patients get to know them

We sadly did not feel like a patient or like a human while treated by Dr. Makarov. I don't think she remembered the details about my case or situation. I often had to remind her of my situation. I very rarely saw her during office visits...[she] called me hours late for phone appointments...Multiple times, I would find out that the "plan" and course of treatment we had agreed upon, was no longer an option and was completely off the table
The office [at New Hope Fertility Center] unfortunately did not stagger monitoring appointments...Many of us would arrive around 6am and wait outside until the building was unlocked, then wait in the lobby to take the elevator upstairs, then wait in the waiting area...very disingenuous in the claims they make about treatment options and then the actual treatment they put you through
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
The first time we met with Dr. Makarov in a consultation, she seemed gentle which I really appreciated. She walked us through her suggestions for treatment and highlighted some of the treatments and procedures that her practice was known for and some things they were "pioneering". We were really drawn to the non-invasive and gentle way they claimed to approach infertility treatments. Initially she claimed, that I would only take oral medications and then 1-3 injections total for an egg retrieval cycle. She explained a new fertilization process that they use that is less invasive to the egg when injecting it with the sperm. And she explained that they only use local anesthesia for egg retrievals which is more gentle on the women's body as you don't have to be completely knocked out. I was really drawn to all of these claims as my partner and I have MFI and I am fairly young so I didn't feel that I needed the most invasive and intense treatment right away. Sadly, every single one of the claims Dr. Makarov made ended up being false and I didn't find out until right before the course of treatment or procedure. For example, right before I began my egg retrieval cycle, I was told I would actually be doing multiple injections/day. I was confused as I had been told there would only be oral medication plus 1-3 injections toward the end of the cycle. At that point, I wasn't too upset and I followed all the instructions of course. Then, a couple days before the egg retrieval procedure, I asked about the less invasive form of fertilization that Dr. Makarov had claimed we could utilize and she said "oh that is just experimental; we can't do that". I was really caught off guard as this was one of the primary reasons we had even selected this clinic, but since we were just a couple days out from the procedure, we moved forward. Then I went to sign the paperwork for the anesthesia for the procedure and I asked if I could do local anesthesia as Dr. Makarov had described to me. The nurse responded by saying "I don't think you'll be able to tolerate the pain; you should just get fully knocked out". I was again completely taken off guard and now I was too scared to do local anesthesia only after this nurse told me the pain would be unbearable so I of course opted for full anesthesia. The first egg retrieval cycle completely failed. We retrieved 11 eggs but 0 made it to blastocyst. We had thought that we would perhaps switch up my treatment plan for the next cycle since the first one completely failed. And when I spoke to Dr. Makarov on the phone, she said that we would do things differently. But when the time came around, they put me on the exact same treatment plan and medication list as the first time. I tried to keep asking why we weren't switching things up like Dr. Makarov said we were going to, but I was just told "this is what Dr. Makarov is prescribing you." It made me feel like she completely forgot about my previous cycle and my situation as a whole. The day of the second egg retrieval was extremely upsetting and stressful and was the "final straw" for us in deciding to switch clinics and doctors. The entire cycle leading up to the second egg retrieval, I had been trying to stress that we would like to use a different vial of frozen sperm from my husband to inseminate the eggs. My husband froze sperm before his cancer treatment and that was what we were using for IVF. The first egg retrieval cycle (which failed), the lab used one vial of sperm and none of the eggs made it to blastocyst. I wanted them to use a different vial of sperm for the second retrieval as we had no shortage of vials and we felt that there was no point to keep trying with a vial that obviously hadn't worked from the first cycle. The embryologists really wanted to just keep using the first vial again. I believe their thinking was they wanted to preserve the vials of sperm for us for future use but we have 20+ vials frozen so we were comfortable using a second vial for this cycle. But the embryologists essentially put their foot down and refused to use a second vial. I had to try to get Dr. Makarov to intervene and speak to the embryologists on our behalf so that they would follow the instructions and use a second vial. The morning of the retrieval, I was thrown back and forth between nurses and staff trying to explain what we needed and trying to get Dr. Makarov to instruct the embryologists downstairs in the lab. Dr. Makarov completely avoided us and wouldn't speak with us. Finally, one of the PAs made a phone call and then rushed me back downstairs as my procedure was scheduled to begin in 5 minutes. It was just a really stressful way to go into a procedure and we felt that we couldn't trust the staff at the clinic or the lab after that. As I mentioned, that was the final straw that led us to switch doctors and clinics. Dr. Makarov didn't perform either of my egg retrievals.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
I truly can't recommend that anyone see Dr. Makarov. Luckily there are lots of other great fertility doctors in the New York City area and I hope that any prospective patients will take these reviews into consideration when making their decision. Don't be swayed by their claims of new and non-invasive treatments as they do not follow through.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
We sadly did not feel like a patient or like a human while treated by Dr. Makarov. I don't think she remembered the details about my case or situation. I often had to remind her of my situation. I very rarely saw her during office visits - perhaps two times after the initial consultation over the course of 4 months. And the couple times that I did see her in the office, she was very rushed and unorganized and didn't seem to know what was going on with my cycle. She gave me a lot of contradicting information which was really frustrating and hurtful. Multiple times, I would find out that the "plan" and course of treatment we had agreed upon, was no longer an option and was completely off the table. Essentially, the reasons that I picked this clinic, ended up not being options. I felt tricked and manipulated and had I known they were going to backtrack on most of their claims, I wouldn't have come to this clinic in the first place. I do understand that there has to be a high level of flexibility with these types of treatments as you are being monitored and as the doctors see how things are progressing. But overall, I felt that Dr. Makarov and this clinic were very disingenuous in the claims they make about treatment options and then the actual treatment they put you through. Aside from visits in person, I was also dissatisfied with the way I was treated when I had phone appointments set up with Dr. Makarov. She would frequently call me up to 8+ hours late and made me feel like I was an inconvenience. Once when I tried to ask follow up questions following a failed procedure, she told me she couldn't answer any detailed questions because she was driving. It was hard to work my full-time job when I was constantly waiting on a phone call that was pushed and pushed throughout the entire day.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
For both my egg retrievals with Dr. Makarov, I was on Clomid (oral), Letrazol (oral), and Gonal-F (injection). I triggered with Ovidrel once and Lupron once. I also took Orilissa to prevent premature ovulation.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
I concluded that the nursing staff was simply too overworked and overbooked to do a good job. They were incredibly unorganized and made a lot of mistakes but I truly think think this is because they were overworked and understaffed. Every morning for monitoring, there would only be one nurse in charge of doing the blood work for every single woman who came in. And they didn't stagger appointment times for blood work. It's just first come, first serve. So everyone would arrive at 6am, stand outside until the building doors opened at 6:30am, then stand in the lobby and wait for the elevators, then go upstairs and wait in the waiting area. I think that they simply had too many patients at one time because I would often have to wait up to two hours just for routine bloodwork and monitoring. The one nurse who was in charge of bloodwork for everyone was awesome. She was so quick and kind and attentive. But she was just way too overworked and they should have had 3-4 nurses doing her job. There was plenty of space for more; there were 3 chairs for drawing blood but they only ever used one. Otherwise, the nursing staff all seem like nice people but they just must be poorly informed because I would often receive incorrect instructions related to my medications from my nurse! And I would have to call her out and remind her that Dr. Makarov had actually said I would be taking another medicine. And she would say "Oh yes, ok take that medicine then." I did not feel that they were thorough or organized.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
Overall, the clinic's biggest weakness and the reason we decided to switch to a different clinic/doctor is that they do not follow through on the things they claim. Additionally, it would be great if they could be a bit more organized in regards to appointment times to cut down on the hours of waiting for routine monitoring appointments. And finally, the communication was really non-existent. Very hard to get responses out of anyone and unclear who I should be reaching out to with questions.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
The office unfortunately did not stagger monitoring appointments, so a large group of women would show up quite early in an attempt to get in early. Many of us would arrive around 6am and wait outside until the building was unlocked, then wait in the lobby to take the elevator upstairs, then wait in the waiting area. The longest I waited for monitoring was 2 hours.
Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.
I believe that Dr. Makarov recommends single embryo transfer which is what I wanted and so I was happy with approach.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at New Hope Fertility Center.
A few more specific area of pain were... * it was very difficult to get this clinic to send my records over to my new clinic when I decided to switch. I had to call for weeks to try to get through to the right person who could fax over my records and I was frequently referred back and forth between departments. * I was instructed to take the wrong trigger medication and I had to correct the nurse. * Dr. Makarov called me hours late for phone appointments. I do understand that as a doctor, her schedule isn't always predictable. But I think if she is going to call 8+ hours after our scheduled phone appointment time, the office should notify the patient so they aren't waiting on the call.

She [Dr. Makarov] seemed to rarely remember me between visits, perhaps because I was an out of town patient who didn't monitor with her but did it locally where I live...The cycle that my eggs both failed to fertilize, she didn't even contact me for 2 weeks. Every time I had an appointment for a call, she called late, or changed the time, or called when I couldn't talk
[New Hope Fertility Center was] Covered by insurance, except PGT-A testing ($850/embryo), sperm freezing ($400), sedation for retrievals ($650)...They [nurses] email you with bad news, no "sorry to tell you this", no compassion, no care. They seem overly busy...They are efficient, but that gives an assrmbly-line feel. They are cheaper than other clinics, and were covered by my insurance, and were willing to work with an older (>43yo) patient which is why I stuck with them.
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
I think many of the issues stem from the fact that she has too many patients to be able to even remember them, but she gives no indication that she's at all invested in your success. I feel like she could not give one hoot if I get pregnant, or not. The cycle that my eggs both failed to fertilize, she didn't even contact me for 2 weeks. Every time I had an appointment for a call, she called late, or changed the time, or called when I couldn't talk. If I suggested a treatment, she'd say "oh, I guess you can try that" - I am not the expert, I need your expertise to advise me.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Pick another doctor.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
She seemed to rarely remember me between visits, perhaps because I was an out of town patient who didn't monitor with her but did it locally where I live. When she would call me, once she started talking about something that we had already discussed, and another time she seemed to think I was a new consult and said "how did you hear about us?".. umm I've been coming to you for 6 months, Doc.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
Mini IVF with clomid, letrozole, follistim, ganirelix, HCG trigger. Always 150 units follistim. Sometimes birth control, sometimes orilissa to prime. Did some luteal phase retrievals. Retrieved between 1 and 5 eggs each retrieval. Zero normal embryos. INitially they recommends NICS (non invasive chromosome testing) for embryo abnormalities, but then they decided that is not accurate and changed to recommending send-out biopsies. I tried to retest 2 embryos which were NICS tested, and one disintegrated with thawing and was thrown out.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
Different people email you all the time, often with contradictory instructions. They told me to take birth control, which I cannot do, and then said oh take this other med then (but I didn't have it, and you can't get it at a regular pharmacy). They email you with bad news, no "sorry to tell you this", no compassion, no care. They seem overly busy.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
They seem too money-hungry. I feel they let you just keep cycling over and over without changing things and don't really care if you get pregnant or not, as long as you're paying. They are quite robotic and impersonable. They are efficient, but that gives an assrmbly-line feel. They are cheaper than other clinics, and were covered by my insurance, and were willing to work with an older (>43yo) patient which is why I stuck with them.

I trust [Dr. Makarov's] intellect and experience, but felt in the dark quite often about why things were being done the way they were. I liked knowing what was happening and would have to bother the nurses to explain everything...Also, being 42 I don't think the doctor advised me accurately from the start at how slim the chances were of having good enough eggs and embryos without abnormalities. She is skilled and intelligent, and great at her job, but could have let us know how small the chances were before we got into it. We could have opted for a more aggressive treatment cycle.Keep notes of questions you want answered at the visits. After monitoring she has to run elsewhere, and doesn't have time to discuss side effects, make predictions etc. On one hand, it's nice not to have a "performer" giving false assurances, on the other, it would be nice to hear some positive thoughts on the process...We did mini ivf both times...The first 2 that made it to blastocysts were complex abnormal and not recommended for transfer.
Oksana [nurse at New Hope] was the main person I met with, but quite often emails would come from whoever was on staff, even if I never met them before. They would try to be detailed and when they would send emails missing information, I would have to ask for clarification, and they would send it...I would have liked if the clinic provided more than one sit down consultation with the doctor. Before starting a second IVF, I would have liked that they met with me, discussed what they think went wrong, and how they were going to address it for the next one. They should have told me, after the first egg retrieval, that I should prepare immediately for another, and the reasons why. Instead I was presented papers to sign I could barely understand, while waking up from sedation, by a disgruntled employee who didn't want to deal with me, or my collapsing recovery chair, being told that I was to have another egg retrieval for the first time.

She's on the 3rd floor, not the 4th which feels like a mall during busy times. People remembered me, and answered my emails.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
We did mini ivf both times. The second time around we used more GonalF per dose, so that we could get more follicles and more chances for successful embryos. The first 2 that made it to blastocysts were complex abnormal and not recommended for transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at New Hope Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: So many people were wonderful)
Oksana was the main person I met with, but quite often emails would come from whoever was on staff, even if I never met them before. They would try to be detailed and when they would send emails missing information, I would have to ask for clarification, and they would send it. This part was frustrating, just send an email with everything a patient would want to know.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
Clean, beautiful, conveniently located, organized and modern. On-site lab. Cookies or banana bread with coffee and infused water for people waiting. I disliked how hard it was to consistently take my blood - multiple people fumbled this.Frequently caused pain that would last the rest of the day and into the next for the next draw. Only 2 people could consistently successfully find my veins. The 4th floor had an inexplicable air freshener that was so strong, it filled the elevators. It stung my eyes the first time I visited. The billing "cashier" is off putting and has a very disinterested and bored attitude, and is in the same room as the rest of the people waiting their turn to make their dreams come true. They need to change that. The wake up after egg retrieval was so harsh - the chair kept falling backwards and I was jolted awake from the anesthetic. Not cozy or warm and the person dealing with me seemed to hate her job and made me sign something when barely cognizant. No doctor or nurse to talk to you afterwards to help you feel any dignity. I left with blood on my hand left from the anesthesiologist and just feeling incised. Instead of heading home to relax and recuperate, I asked for a meeting with the client care coordinator and submitted my complaints. The good is that they do care about their client experience and want to grow and expand. So they seemed interested in how they could do better.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
The 3rd floor monitoring experience was nice. There was a screen for the 4th floor appointments with people's names coming up that were not in the room. Not sure why that was there. There was coffee, tea, water and snack. It was quiet and intimate and not as perfumed as the 4th floor. The upstairs monitoring is sometimes standing room only and a well oiled machine. But still can mean a wait for over an hour some days.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center.
For the first egg retrieval we were covered by insurance. The second time, our plan had changed and it was out of network. 2750 for egg retrieval and fertilization (ICSI). 550 for anesthetic. 750 for NICS PGS testing (which includes free ICSI) and 1200 for freezing...some additional costs as well.
Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.

I would have liked if the clinic provided more than one sit down consultation with the doctor. I'd also would have liked to have had an opportunity to speak to my doctor with my pants on, at her desk, and not in the exam room, about my case, with her halfway out the door. They booked her solid and ultimately I stopped seeing her and didn't care. Next, the billing cashier ran my partners credit card for a charge without notifying us first. She also didn't allow me to get on the wait list for the final blood draw before the egg retrieval until I paid. I waited a half hour thinking I was soon to be called up. The charges were all explained and she told me what the charges would be. Then gave me the receipt, and told me she'd email the receipt too (never did). Then my partner gets a cc notification that another 550 was charged, without an email notifying us that this was happening or a receipt to our emails. Overall, the cashier is the most demoralizing of the experience. I have no problem paying for services rendered but to make me line up like I'm buying tacos at a food truck is just not respectful of our time or money in a room that's supposed to be about "hope". Also, being 42 I don't think the doctor advised me accurately from the start at how slim the chances were of having good enough eggs and embryos without abnormalities. She is skilled and intelligent, and great at her job, but could have let us know how small the chances were before we got into it. We could have opted for a more aggressive treatment cycle.

Dr. Makarov is very nice and she helped me understand how the whole IVF journey would go as it was my first time. She encouraged us to switch our insurance company so that we could have more IVF cycles for the new year which we didn't realize was an option. A lot of times I felt a little lost as to what the big picture plan would be which I guess can be the nature of IVF...You may be someone who won't need too much meds/stimulation to be successful but if you're like me (DOR), you may need more and I wish I would have figured this out earlier and started somewhere else.
They [New Hope Fertility Center staff] get you in and out very quickly and the whole place is a very well-oiled machine. The Billing department is very on top of it and good at explaining the costs etc. The clinic itself is very conveniently located and has great hours for monitoring. Again, understand their specialty which is 'natural and mini IVF'...Monitoring was any time from 7am-2pm during the week and 7-12pm on the weekends. There were a lot of different ultrasound technicians that would perform ultrasounds when the doctor was too busy or wasn't in (on the weekends)

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Understand that NHFC is a very very busy clinic that specializes in 'natural IVF'. You may be someone who won't need too much meds/stimulation to be successful but if you're like me (DOR), you may need more and I wish I would have figured this out earlier and started somewhere else.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
The clinic is super busy and it was hard to get a chance to talk to her even though she was doing my ultrasounds almost every day. She is very nice and happy to explain things but super busy.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
The nurses were really nice and caring. Sometimes I wasn't sure if they seemed to remember me and my specific needs/issues which I know is hard because they must have so many patients that they are caring for at one time.

There were a lot of different ultrasound technicians that would perform ultrasounds when the doctor was too busy or wasn't in (on the weekends). The clinic seemed to hire a bunch of new technicians when I was going there and it just felt like so many different people were caring for you that I would worry info would be lost among all of these moving parts.

She [Dr. Makarov] never explained why did anything. First cycle started with pills, and didn’t have shots til the end. Resulted in 3 eggs. Next she started with pills and shots. Resulted in 13 eggs. Next round she did pills and 1/2 the amount of shots. Results 8 eggs. Never discussed why the change. Finally after the third round I asked her why she thought we were getting numerous eggs but no normal ones. Her response was she basically didn’t know. It felt like she just hadn’t thought about it.
They [New Hope] almost had me cancel a cycle because on my retrieval day they had a mistake in their system saying we owed money. We didn’t, we paid the full amount the day before. They were causally looking into it until I insisted that I get my sonogram so they can do my retrieval. One tech said sorry, if you haven’t paid we can’t do anything. She was so rude. Especially because we did pay. They never apologized.
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
What I says before. She was nice, but not very invested in our success. When we came for the follow up after retrieving the eggs and them being abnormal she hadn’t even looked at the results until we were in her office.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Keep on top of everything. Make sure they are giving you the proper information and that you get it on time.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
You only spoke to her when you were there. She seemed very h concerned with the results. We have 13 eggs retrieved in our first cycle using the shots. None of them came back normal. She never addressed that, it was just onto the next cycle with no discussion. She was nice when you were in the office why her, but felt very detached from our success

The ones they took your blood were very nice. They had the most compassion out of any at New Hope.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
You are a number. Especially if you are upstairs. The receptionists do not care that this is one of the most sensitive things someone could go through. The actual office is lovely. You must keep on top of them and insist on the treatment that you want. If you call and want to speak with a doctor they will tell you it’s not possible. You have to insist and make a scene. This was actually great. You had a large window and rarely a long wait time. The Dr did most of the sonograms, if she was there. She only came in 3 days a week. In 3 retrieval she never did ours

They were just disorganized. They would wait to tell you what you needed even if it required you to go to a pharmacy. Ine time they never emailed me with directions. They often didn’t call in prescriptions but the pharmacy thankfully knew us and knew it was a mistake and would give us the prescription.

How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Dr Makarov was kind and compassionate and always helped put our minds at ease, even when we got negative results, we moved onto the next step and she assured us that we would get pregnant. We fully trusted her judgement and treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?

Oksana and Joanna were my primary nurses and they were so helpful when in explaining next steps and answered any questions that I have. They were always so knowledgable, kind and compassionate.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
Overall, I was very happy with the clinic. Aside from the great care that I received, It was always so clean, and well organized. Karen at the front desk was always so warm and sweet. I never experienced any doctor or staff member to be rude or nasty. Of course when you are going so often for monitoring and treatments, you may have a bad experience at some point but that's normal.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
I would go between 8-9am on the day that they would tell me to come in. I would check in, and then wait for blood work and monitoring. Some days would take longer than others, but it really just depended on the day and the amount of people that were there. It was a very easy and straightforward process.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center.
It's expensive. No way around it, but if you're insurance doesn't cover IUIs and IVF, it's expensive. The costs at NHFC seem to be comparable to that of other clinics in NYC.
Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.
Dr Makarov's preference was for us to transfer a single embryo, as she felt there was more risk with multiples.

Dr. Kulp Makarov is highly knowledgeable, compassionate and very calm. That was exactly what we needed during a very stressful time!! She was able to adjust our fertility medications after our first round was unsuccessful. She kept us well informed and was upbeat and encouraging. And above all kind and empathetic...A mix of compassion, knowledge and kindness. She’s very busy, but was always there when we needed her...
This clinic [New Hope Fertility Center] is a well run machine! It can seem a little too fancy at first glance. But that is more than compensated for the caring staff and the attention to personal details. The location was very convenient for us. And the scheduling was incredibly flexible...Highly efficient and knowledgeable [nursing staff]. We always felt like we were in good hands...

Dr. Makarov is warm and loving. It’s true that she’s not at every appointment, but her nurses are very kind and knowledgeable too. Dr Makarov made sure to handle my first and last ultrasound at New Hope...gentle and knowledgeable. She handled my retrieval cycle perfectly as well as my transfer cycle. Her intuition is great. I wasn’t so concerned about not seeing her every visit as I knew she was evaluating my labs each time...

You will need to communicate with nursing about your concerns/questions. They will answer you but you won’t be seeing the same person every time. [Dr. Makarov] Seemed in a rush to get us to IVF and wanted us to fail everything until that point. Ignored my issues with a short luteal phase; always too busy to answer questions. They [nurse of New Hope Fertility Center] made me go through blood test and ultrasound when I didn't need them, because I wasn't on my cycle. I asked them several times to make sure if I had to take the blood out and pay for it, as one of the nurses said I didn't need to, but they made me go through it anyway and billed me later. What was worse was that they lost the sample and I didn't hear back the result. I hope it didn't get misplaced by someone else's.

It's hard to assess the doctor [Dr. Jennifer Kulp Makarov] because so many things have gone wrong but it's unclear if they were her fault or caused by bad communication and poor planning by the practice. There have been times where we've felt jerked around, unprepared, and misled. Throughout it all she has been kind and caring but our confidence has eroded...You have to be your own advocate. It was totally unpredictable whether you'd wait for 10 minutes or 30 [at New Hope Fertility Center]...You have to be your own advocate. They routinely give contradictory information, give you urgent instructions to take medication they haven't bothered to prescribe, and leave you teetering on the brink of messing up each cycle...It's hard to assess the doctor because so many things have gone wrong but it's unclear if they were her fault or caused by bad communication and poor planning by the practice. There have been times where we've felt jerked around, unprepared, and misled. Throughout it all she has been kind and caring but our confidence has eroded.

Dr. Makarov provides completely customized care for each patient. After each appointment, she reviews your ultrasound and bloodwork, and follows up with specific next steps over email based on the results. Communication was very clear, prompt, and I always felt like I had a game plan specific to my case...believe in a more natural approach to IVF... implemented a natural transfer protocol, syncing the timing with my existing cycle...
New Hope has open monitoring hours so you just show up anytime during the 7am-noon window of time and get seen by the doctor/PA/nurse in the order you arrive. They're extremely efficient with getting you in and out...[nurses were] Extremely caring, kind and knowledgeable. They were also phenomenal communicators. How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
I was referred to Dr. Makarov by a friend after 2 failed egg retrievals at another clinic due to producing zero blastocysts. My old doctor told us our infertility was due to poor egg quality (I'm 33 for reference) and we should start thinking about donor eggs. In our first consult with Dr. Makarov, she assured me there was nothing wrong with my eggs and that I was simply overstimulated with way too many injectable medications. She thought I was a perfect candidate for mini-IVF, a lower stimulation protocol with more oral medications. We would get fewer eggs, but they would be higher quality and ultimately result in more blastocysts . In that one conversation, Dr. Makarov revived our hope and we felt 100% confident in putting her in charge of our care. Our mini-IVF cycle was as successful as she predicted, we produced 3 blastocysts (with my own eggs!) and all 3 ended up being PGS normal. We transferred our first embryo in September and just gave birth to my son in May. I truly can't recommend Dr. Makarov enough, she's incredibly smart and knowledgeable. Where my old doctor made me feel like a lost cause, Dr. Makarov made me feel optimistic and excited about the process again (which is really hard after 2+ years of infertility, 1 miscarriage, 3 IUIs, and 2x failed egg retrievals).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Put your trust in Dr. Makarov and her team. Their approach may seem a little different (i.e. mini-IVF is a little unusual if you've done IVF elsewhere) but trust that they know what they're doing and are customizing your care for a reason, above all they want you to be successful. The only thing that took some getting used to at New Hope is that you won't see Dr. Makarov at every visit, sometimes you'll meet with her PA who is fantastic as well as the nurses. Even if Dr. Makarov isn't meeting with you, she's always reviewing your bloodwork and ultrasound to recommend next steps.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
Even though New Hope is a large clinic, Dr. Makarov provides completely customized care for each patient. After each appointment, she reviews your ultrasound and bloodwork, and follows up with specific next steps over email based on the results. Communication was very clear, prompt, and I always felt like I had a game plan specific to my case.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
Dr Makarov and New Hope in general believe in a more natural approach to IVF. That means leveraging your body's natural hormones and supplementing with less stimulation, more oral medication (clomid, letrozole) and less injectables (we only used gonal-f and cetrotide) at 1/3 of the doses we had used with traditional IVF at our old clinic. And when we were ready to transfer, Dr Makarov implemented a natural transfer protocol, syncing the timing with my existing cycle. Ultimately, this approach with less medication and lower dose hormones made all the difference.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
Extremely caring, kind and knowledgeable. They were also phenomenal communicators. It was always easy to get responses in the portal or over the phone.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
Strengths: - New Hope has open monitoring hours so you just show up anytime during the 7am-noon window of time and get seen by the doctor/PA/nurse in the order you arrive. They're extremely efficient with getting you in and out. This made it easy to fit my schedule and go to the office before work plus less stressful if you hit traffic on the way to the clinic. - customized protocols - Really great communication through the portal - Very thorough - Innovative. New Hope is on the cutting edge of new reproductive technology Weaknesses - All of the doctors do the procedures so its not guaranteed that your primary RE will do your egg retrieval, transfer, etc. - You won't always see a doctor during monitoring
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
An efficient, well-oiled machine. Bloodwork was done right outside of the ultrasound rooms so they did a great job of getting everyone in and out.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center.
New Hope was very transparent about the costs. They provide a piece of paper that outlines costs if you were to self-play for each individual procedure they offer. Since New Hope does everything in-house, I felt like their costs were less expensive compared to my first clinic where all procedures had to happen at a nearby hospital.
Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.
Since my embryos were genetically tested, highly rated and I'm under 35, Dr Makarov felt strongly about only transferring one embryo. However I know other patients that transferred 2x if they were older and their embryos were untested. It seems that the decision is made on a case by case basis.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at New Hope Fertility Center.
I had one situation where I was emailed inaccurate changes to my medication protocol. However I called the clinic to question it and it was quickly resolved before I implemented the changes. The nurse was extremely apologetic and nothing like that ever happened again.

Dr. Makarov was really knowledgeable about everything related to my care. Visits were sometimes in and out, but that's just what happens at a fertility clinic when you're there all the time! Anytime I asked something, she was happy to take time to explain or go over the possibilities. I always trusted her decision making...Don't expect that she's going to offer all of the information at the outset -- come with questions if you want specific answers!
All of the nurses on the [New Hope Fertility Center] floor were incredibly kind and were truly rooting me on along the way. I couldn't have asked for a better team...Even though there are different people responding, I still felt like they were paying specific attention to my needs, particularly when it came to lowering the amount of medication I needed.

The whole team was really kind and generous with me.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
We did three rounds of IUI just because my insurance required it before moving to IVF. Once we decided to move to IVF, we did an egg retrieval but then waited a month for my ovaries to heal because I had so many eggs. The next month, we did the implantation and now we are nearing the end of our first trimester.
Describe your experience with your nurse at New Hope Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Temima)
Everyone on the nursing staff was wonderful. I worked mostly with Temima as my RN and she made sure to do a personal follow up with me when I had some complications following my egg retrieval. All of the nurses on the floor were incredibly kind and were truly rooting me on along the way. I couldn't have asked for a better team.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
I've seen some reviews that were upset because they didn't get personalized attention at every step from specific people in the office, and it's true that a rotating group of people will respond to you and be with you during monitoring. But this is a large clinic in the middle of New York City, so I'm not sure why they would expect that! Even though there are different people responding, I still felt like they were paying specific attention to my needs, particularly when it came to lowering the amount of medication I needed.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at New Hope Fertility Center.
I went right around 7am when they opened. I scheduled to be there for about 45 minutes each time. Only once did I go over that time, and that was at the height of Omicron so I think they had staffing issues that were out of their control. Usually I was there about 30 minutes.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center.
My care was mostly covered by insurance but I had co-pays.
Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.
They preferred single embryo transfer for health reasons, but it seemed like if I had really pushed for multiple, they would have been open to it.

Dr. Makarov was a compassionate, understanding and informative. She allowed the time and space to talk and express my concern about my past experiences. Her instructions were clear and so were the expectations of this pregnancy journey...used the rejuvenation procedure to improve the quality of my eggs, retrieval, at one point I had to take birth control pills to control when I will ovulate. I had different injections during the phase of growing the eggs and retrieving them. This resulted in 5 eggs retrieved and 3 embryos in good conditions and with positive genetic testing...
The nurses [at New Hope Fertility Center] were courteous and friendly. They were helpful with all questions that I sent over email and responded fairly quickly...I would suggest coming early to be seen before work because it gets packed pretty fast. The overall atmosphere is clean and spacious. If you need a doctors letter they will write it at that moment or email you a copy...

She [Dr. Jennifer Kulp Makarov] is not a chatty person. But when I ask my questions, she answered everything. This [New Hope Fertility Center] very busy clinic. So you need to top of this and ask your questions about your treatments and bills as well. Sometimes, they charge something that I already paid. Overall, this clinic is cheaper than other clinic in NYC.
How was your experience with Jennifer Kulp Makarov at New Hope Fertility Center?
She is not a chatty person. But when I ask my questions, she answered everything. So you want to think what to ask before you go to appointments. When I ended up chemical pregnancy on first FET with Different doctor in same clinic, I switched doctor to Dr. Makarov. She did a procedure and detected my inflammation in uterus. So she told me to get antibiotics and skip a cycle. My inflammation didn’t go away completely in next cycle. She suggested me to wait one more cycle. I was most frustrated 2 months for me. But she found the cause and told me to wait. So she is not a doctor who trying to make money from patients. She was really trying make me pregnant on first try with her. She is not like super warm type of doctor. More like realistic and tell you what you need but also consults what patient’s want. If we decided to have another one, I’ll definitely come back to her!

List your questions before your appointment. She doesn’t have a lot of time to each patients.

Describe the protocols Jennifer Kulp Makarov used in your cycles at New Hope Fertility Center and their degree of success.
I already had PGT-tested frozen eggs from first egg retrieval with different doctor in same clinic. When I did first FET, I didn’t use ovidrel for ovulation. With her, I used ovidrel, progesterone and estradiol. And my thyroid level was low. So she told me to use Levothyroxine. Then I got pregnant! With first doctor, he didn’t mention about my thyroid level.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at New Hope Fertility Center.
After appointments with doctor or NP, if you have questions, you deal with nurses. Because they are busy big clinic, they have work shifts. So when you send questions, sometimes you don’t get answers. Because this nurse is went home or off that day. But if you send questions to other nurses, you will eventually get answers. It’s sometimes frustrating. But also I understand that they are busy.

I thought she [Dr. Jennifer Kulp Makarov] was direct and clear about what our options were and what our likelihood of success might be. She didn't volunteer information readily, but she answered our questions when we had them. She stayed consistently hopeful and encouraging, even though my numbers might not indicate a lot of cause for hope. She seemed pragmatic and efficient.
The offices [of New Hope Fertility Center] are spacious and centrally located. They seem to move through appointments efficiently and respectfully. I consistently had good experiences with the nurses and coordinators. They knew my name and were super encouraging...The clinic was very supportive and kind. They also weren't judgmental about my low numbers, which is an experience I'd had a previous clinic.

The nature of fertility clinics is such that you're never entirely treated like a human, but as much as possible under the circumstances Dr. Makarov was efficient and informative.
Describe your experience with New Hope Fertility Center.
The offices are spacious and centrally located. They seem to move through appointments efficiently and respectfully. I consistently had good experiences with the nurses and coordinators. They knew my name and were super encouraging. We ultimately got pregnant after eight days of taking both Clomid and Letrozole (no retrieval, just conceiving on our own). The clinic was very supportive and kind. They also weren't judgmental about my low numbers, which is an experience I'd had a previous clinic.
Describe Jennifer Kulp Makarov's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at New Hope Fertility Center.
We were doing "mini IVF" which ended up taking multiple cycles just to retrieve a small number of eggs. I thought I would prefer a less invasive approach, then full blown IVF, but in the end, because it required multiple retrievals, it ended up feeling pretty invasive anyhow.
