I always felt like my treatment [with Dr. Jennifer Mersereau] was tailored to me and not some cookie cutter plan...She is kind, thoughtful and compassionate. She is very knowledgeable and up front about how treatment would go. She always answers my questions in ways I understood and helped soothe my fears. She always made time for us when we were in the office and explained the course of treatment. She made us feel very special.
Mindy [nurse at UNC Fertility] was amazing! She is so awesome. I could call her or email her about anything. She was fast to respond and got answers for us quickly. She was great at educating us through the process of taking the medication...All of the costs were told to us up front and we were given options for payment...They were fast in getting us an appointment and getting us in to see a doctor that would work with us after all we had been through. The clinic always made us feel as though we were a priority. They were open weekends to accommodate our needs during treatment.

Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
We went right to IVF and it was because she didn’t want to waste our time trying more treatment what would not likely be successful.

Dr. Mersereau is amazing...lost my fallopian tubes... endometriosis...always extremely helpful, compassionate, and followed all of our wishes...was very good at explaining all of the details and possibilities every step of the way...transferred 1 embryo because of my age and the likelihood for success and the increased risks
[AT Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas] Every single staff member I worked with was amazing...extremely helpful and communicative...shared risk program...loved all the nurses and staff...literally cried with me when I found out I was pregnant and they were so kind and supportive...extremely dedicated
How was your experience with Jennifer Mersereau at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas?
Dr. Mersereau is amazing! I unfortunately lost my fallopian tubes to hydrosalpinx and IVF was the only option for my husband and I to conceive. The process was difficult (of course), but I am convinced it was as painless as possible and we were very lucky our first embryo stuck. She was always extremely helpful, compassionate, and followed all of our wishes. Our little one was born just over a week ago and we couldn’t be happier! I also have endometriosis, so I really wanted my embryos genetically tested to try and have a boy so I didn’t pass my problems on to my child (my mom and grandma also have it and I’ve had significant complications). She made sure this happened and we are so lucky to have a perfectly healthy baby boy. Her attention to our wishes such as this one was really important to us and part of why we loved her so much. She also was very good at explaining all of the details and possibilities every step of the way and that is always very important to me as a patient.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas?
Make sure you are completely open about your wants, needs, and expectations and don’t be afraid to ask questions or voice your concerns.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas?
All of the staff was extremely kind and supportive. I had a lot of questions and concerns (including a subchorionic hematoma after I was pregnant) and they never made me feel bad or like I was overreacting when I brought up anything. I had extra ultrasounds to ease my nerves and they even made sure to get me in same day when I was really worried.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas and their degree of success.
I don’t remember the names of all the specific protocols or the doses of my medications, but I do know that Dr. Mersereau was able to get plenty of eggs from my first retrieval, 18 of which fertilized, and after genetic testing we were left with 7 eggs (6 girls and 1 boy). Due to my endometriosis I wanted a boy to avoid passing it down to him and she was able to successfully transfer the male embryo and I now have a happy and healthy miracle baby boy. I trust her recommendations completely as they all resulted in success the first time. I know part of it is luck and even if you do all the right protocols there isn’t 100% success, but I feel confident she chose the best protocols for me and my situation because if she hadn’t we wouldn’t have had success at every step the first time.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas. (Assigned nurse: Wendy)
I absolutely loved all the nurses and staff at SGF! They literally cried with me when I found out I was pregnant and they were so kind and supportive. I can’t imagine having a better, more compassionate care team. They are also extremely dedicated and communicative, even on evenings and weekends when they don’t have to be.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas.
I’m so glad I chose SGF for this journey. Every single staff member I worked with was amazing and I ended up with exactly what I came in for - a beautiful miracle baby. They were extremely helpful and communicative every step of the way. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, voice concerns, or state your wants/needs during the process because mine were all addressed in a helpful, respectful manner.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Mersereau at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas.
We went with the program where you get a certain number of transfers and if you aren’t successful you get your money back. I believe it was called the shared risk program. This didn’t include medication, but did include most other costs. All in all we spent about $40,000.
Describe Jennifer Mersereau's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas.
We transferred 1 embryo because of my age and the likelihood for success and the increased risks for me specifically if I were to have multiples. It was the best choice for us.

Don't be afraid to ask questions! She will explain a lot, but there are no stupid questions - if you are wondering about something, let her know.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas?
Dr. M is so kind and nurturing. She understood how fragile and exhausted I was with it all when I stepped into her office, and she made me feel welcome and comfortable as I shared our story. She is genuinely interested and listens to how hard the path has been. In addition, she clearly explained the steps we can take together, as well as what we could expect from them.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility Carolinas and their degree of success.
We have experienced 5 miscarriages (2 prior to my son and 3 since his birth). Due to my age and recurrent pregnancy loss, we have undergone a ton of testing to try to figure out what is causing this. We started with blood tests to rule out any clotting diseases, immune responses, and unbalances, and to check my ovarian reserve. Those all came back normal so we then did a saline ultrasound to check my anatomy. That looked normal as well. We did an endometrial biopsy at that time and that came back positive for Chronic Endometritis which I was promptly treated for. We also did a semen specimen to check for male factors. We are now planning to move forward with an IUI as my chronic endometritis has been healed.

Describe Jennifer Mersereau's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at UNC Fertility.
Dr. M explained to me the reasoning behind why they only do single embryo transfer. She was real and honest! Not only did she give me the percentage for how many embryos survive, but she explained with a real life scenario. That helped put things into perspective. If multiple embryo transfer isn’t successful, it would be devastating for everyone involved.

Dr. Mersereau is more on the blunt side, but I like that about her. I would rather know the truth. She is always willing to answer all of our questions, and even met with us late once when my husband was running late...We are unexplained fertility. We have done 3 IUI's + 2 IUI's with clomid. Additionally, we have done 1 round of IVF, which was unsuccessful. Fortunately, we bought 3 cycles upfront.
[nurse of UNC Fertility] responds so quick to emails, and honestly, I feel she is holding my hand every step of the way...I like that UNC allows you to purchase multiple cycles upfront...First 3 IUI's were $300 a piece (with help of insurance), the next 2 IU's with clomid were $1000 each. We paid about $30K for 3 cycles of IVF and have used one.
How was your experience with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Overall, I like Dr. M. I was referred to her by 2 friends, one who is an OB, so that was comforting. I do wish, however, that in the past we had been a bit more aggressive. I wish that we would have been encouraged to go straight to IVF after 3 failed IUI's. I do feel that she cares for her patients, and I do recommend her overall. She practices very evidenced-based medicine.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Come with all of your questions, b/c otherwise, you may forget them. If you have a question, ASK it.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at UNC Fertility.
I wouldn't say this was necessarily fault on the part of the doctors, but I just feel that my husband got some info from the repro endocrinologist that was not completely in sync with what I got from Dr. M-- this was likely my husband's fault, since I believe he was misinterpreting the info. I would recommend for you and your partner to attend office appointments together.

Dr. Mersereau is professional and knowledgable. She has a calm and logical approach to the process and offered conservative treatment but was willing to explore options. She was able to explain the process in a comprehensive manner and explain the choices we had going forward. She is approachable and really took her time to address all our questions and concerns.
Wendy [nurse at UNC Fertility] was amazing, professional, compassionate, and maintained a supportive environment through out the course of our treatment. She was responsive and went above and beyond to provide care by phone and in the office...Strengths were the physician and nursing staff who were very compassionate and supportive. Their finance team was less responsive and not as clear. The clinic did not offer any learning tools as other clinics have and they do not offer or recommend complimentary care. They could do better with more support groups and counseling integrated into their treatment plan.

Go in with questions. Because she takes her time and has a team of RE that review your case, your questions and asks may take more time to be processed. However, we felt that they took into consideration what we wanted and advised us appropriately our options and how they could help.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Dr. M made time to sit and answer questions appropriately with consideration for our expectations and the reality of our situation. We worked more with her nurse than her but she made sure to call with results and other important information.

I was unaware of the treatment protocols for IUI. Dr. Mersereau prescribed me clomid for all my IUIs, but she never gave me a trigger shot. I just used ovulation predictor kits which are not always very accurate. I felt like it was just a guessing game and I wish we had been more aggressive with the specifics of the treatments. As a doctor, she was very kind, compassionate, and thorough when diagnosing me. I just did not agree with the treatments.
The clinic [UNC Fertility-Raleigh] was beautiful. They had an entirely separate area for specimen collection and a lovely waiting room. It felt like a spa. It was not, however, close to UNC Chapel Hill's campus like I thought it would be. It was closer to the airport which was a long drive for me.... The nursing staff were the ones who performed the IUI, I never even saw the doctor on those days. They were very kind and compassionate. They would always be so upbeat about our chances to conceive. When I called to say that the IUI didn't work and I needed to start a new round of treatment, they were so kind and compassionate about our grief.

I do not think they were great at giving instructions for Ovulation predictor kits. I know that the directions are on the kit's box, but I wish the nurse had given specifics because there was already so much to remember with the infertility journey.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. M [Jennifer Mersereau] got us in for a consultation quickly. She is personable and passionate about her patients. She gave encouraging words and described everything in detail. She even drew diagrams to help us understand the upcoming procedures and what we should expect. After the consultation and several attempts to diagnose, we began the IUI cycle. I did not see Dr. M for these visits, only a nurse and doctor interns. I would have loved to speak directly with doctor on the day of treatment.
[UNC Fertility is a] Great clinic! No complaints. They work with your schedule as much as they can. Are available on Saturday and sundays for ultrasound or treatments. Front desk staff is accommodating and worked with me when I had insurance questions. The office is always clean. They provide coffee and water to patients in the waiting area.... Always answer my messages quickly and in depth. I love that they check on me towards the end of my TWW. They are always encouraging and happy in the office and greet me by my first name. Awesome staff!

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
This is not specific to Dr. M, but the process in itself. Pray! Have a group that prays for you and with you. You will need a shoulder to lean on
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Dr. M takes the time to answer my questions about medications and all fertility questions
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
I began with Femara 6mg, this only produced one mature egg per month. After 5 months, I began clomid 150mg. I have produced 2-3 mature follicles each cycle. Clomid does come with more side effects and possibility of multiples. We had our first IUI with Femara with no success. Took several months off to emotionally and financially recover. We are working on the 2nd IUI, back to back.

IUI was $889 per cycle, with insurance. Not cheap, but hopefully worth it.

I appreciate [Dr. Mersereau's] frank take on options with fertility. It was nice that she didn’t send us down a rabbit hole with “other” stuff to try (supplements, wives tales, natural remedies). She sticks to protocol using studies and her own experience to draw from...Don’t expect her to throw the kitchen sink at your treatment. She feels very calculated and thoughtful in her approach. And she doesn’t want to make her patients do a bunch of unnecessary stuff.
Kim [nurse at UNF Fertility] rocked. We could call, Email, message her through their patient portal. She made herself extremely accessible and even helped us find cheaper prescriptions when ordering our medications. I can’t say enough positive things about her. Super caring, empathetic and compassionate. She clearly loves what she does and is really good at it...Strengths: facility is great. Business staff are fairly knowledgeable. Weaknesses: it can be challenging to get in touch with their financial folks. Not impossible but they might be harder than the IVF nurse coordinator.

She sticks to protocol using studies and her own experience to draw from. For me that was freeing because I would beat myself up on natural fertility enhancers or habits that worked for other women but not me.

We met with Dr M multiple times and she always showed care of us. We never felt like she disregarded our worry or anxiety.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
One of the things we looked at was doing a natural cycle for transfer. I so much appreciate that we continued to look for options to build on what my body can do on it’s own even if my eggs were not great quality.

It was mostly one amount and everything was covered. The only separate things were medications, refrigeration costs, and anesthesia.
Describe Jennifer Mersereau's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at UNC Fertility.
For the first transfer she wanted to do 1 because if I was to get pregnant we picked the best, most mature embryo (my others were Day 3). The second transfer we used the 2 remaining embryos. I feel like her advice made sense for us.

My wife and I worked predominantly with Dr. Jennifer Mersereau's team. They were caring and sincere, however, we did feel that they weren't willing to explore options such as double IUI in a cycle or InvoCell. Her team responded fairly quickly to messages. ... After approx 6 months of orals, we attempted IUI with femara twice, once with a trigger shot. The 3rd IUI we used femara with a trigger shot (ovidrel) before IUI then pregnyl afterwards followed by vaginal suppositories of progesterone. Unfortunately all with no success.
[UNC Fertility is] Very welcoming, clean, professional. I like that it was on the 3rd floor which allowed privacy. There is some miscommunication with the financial department and I would be vigilant with your information and payments. Twice we received a bill in the mail after we had already paid in full for the "all inclusive" procedure. They corrected this after we showed them the paid balance.

My wife and I worked predominantly with Dr. Jennifer Mersereau's team. They were caring and sincere, however, we did feel that they weren't willing to explore options such as double IUI in a cycle or InvoCell. Her team responded fairly quickly to messages. We worked with Dr. Jennifer Mersereau once for an US and she was very quick in and out of the room. At times we felt like we were asking questions to try and keep her in the room to explain further.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Come in with your questions on paper and be prepared. Be sure to give your entire story in a succinct manner including what meds you've taken, menstrual cycle regularities, family/social history, and other pertinent information. This will allow you to maximize your visit.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Dr. Jennifer Mersereau's team was helpful and caring. They listened and asked questions to make sure they understood the care and treatment we were hoping for.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
Tried multiple cycles of moderate and then high dose clomid by itself for approximately 3 cycles. Once we found out my wife wasn't producing the expected number of follicles, we switch to Femara for 3+ cycles. This showed some improvements but we never fully were sure if we had 2 follicles. It showed at least one on US but they suspected the second to be large enough to mature.
Describe your experience with your nurse at UNC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Mindi)
The staff was cordial and professional, however there was some mix up on when to take the Ovidrel injection. The doc told us 36hrs prior to IUI but when my wife called to confirm the nurse gave us a different time. We said 36hrs to the nurse and she said 48hrs. This caused quite a bit of stress on my wifes behalf which is what we wanted to avoid prior to another IUI. We ultimately did get in contact with the doctor through another nurse and injected appropriately.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility.
There were questionable charges after we had paid for procedures in full. I would encourage you to keep a folder and follow closely. The appointments were different charges each time and our insurance didn't really cover much.
Describe Jennifer Mersereau's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at UNC Fertility.
none. We didn't get this far.
What specific things went wrong at UNC Fertility?
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at UNC Fertility.
There was some issues with what time to give the Ovidrel to my wife. The provider said 36hrs but when the nursing staff messaged her, they gave a different time frame. This did cause some issues and stress. We ultimately got it right, I think. Unfortunately, it didn't result in a positive test. We did have some ongoing financial department issues with miscommunication and extra bills that we had already paid for. I would encourage you to pay close attention to your payments and bills.

Be ready for her [Dr. Mersereau] to put everything into action. She is no fuss but cares greatly...She was the first doctor to explain things to us in ways we could understand and not just go for all the technical verbage...Dr. M was willing to work with us exploring all options available instead of just saying it wouldn't work and going straight to IVF...We did 3 medicated cycles under direction using Femara. The first cycle the IUI wasn't able to happen. The last two cycles the IUI happened but both resulted in negatives. She is trying that approach because I asked about it. With one blocked tube and unexplained diagnosis, I don't want to leave any option unused.
What I love about the clinic [UNC Fertility] is that no matter how much time has elapsed between appointments they remember who you are and a little about your background. As for weaknesses, sometimes its hard to schedule an appointment when its most convenient but they are willing to work hard with your schedule...Mindy and Wendy [nurses] have been amazing to work with! They have answered every one of my questions no matter what I have asked with such ease and person-ability. I feel like I am talking to a friend when I send in an emailed question versus talking to yet another clinician.

I had a copay for visits with her. Then each IUI cycle there is a $600 fee that includes all labs, ultrasounds, and the SAs my husband had to do.

Just one incident where I was going in for bloodwork. They had written down for that appointment the wrong orders, but within 5 minutes was to able to correct what was needed.

At times it felt like [Dr. Mersereau's] time was short, go into appointments prepared with questions. I loved that she took notes of the conversation for you and let you take them home with you...We tried 3 IUI’s, partially because that is what our insurance covered and partially because Dr. M said if IUi was going to work, it would work within 4 tries. After that we moved in to IVF...took the time to explain the process, our diagnosis and our treatment plan. She was patient when we had questions and put us at ease when we were anxious. She was warm and broke things down into language we could understand.
I would email her [nurse at UNC Fertility] a non urgent question over the weekend and would have a response within an hour. I started to hold my nonurgent questions until the week because she wa so dedicated. When we took a blood test to determine if we were pregnant, she called us over the weekend when she was not working because she wanted to be the one to deliver us the good news. She would always provide me with all the necessary information, including any negative side effects I might expect and the chances that I would experience them. She was the most amazing nurse, ever.
How was your experience with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
I loved Dr. M, she was so friendly to my husband and I. We felt she really took the time to make sure we understood our diagnosis and treatment plan. She made me feel comfortable and helped calm my anxiety. I would go into appointments scared of the outcome or the next step and she always made me feel better and confident that I would become pregnant.

Describe your experience with your nurse at UNC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Wendy)
Wendy was amazing, she was blunt but so caring. She knew I was nervous to start injections and offered to facetime with me through my first injection. She literally made herself available to me anytime on or off the clock including nights, weekends and while on vacations. I would email her a non urgent question over the weekend and would have a response within an hour. I started to hold my nonurgent questions until the week because she wa so dedicated. Describe your experience with UNC Fertility.
No one wants to go to a fertility clinic, the waiting room made me sad to see so many couples of varying ages there for the same reason. Everyone from the front desk, to the finance department, nurses and doctors were so nice, professional and compassionate. I was surprised when we started going that the staff knew so many patients by first name. By the end of our IVF cycle, they knew my name too. When we “graduated” I was sad to leave their care. If they could be my regular OBGYN I would go to them in a heartbeat. The patient rooms are comfortable and nice. The doctors meet with you in their office. Overall, they make you feel as comfortable as you can during one of the hardest times of your life.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility.
We were forunate that insurance covered most of our medication with just a copay. IVF cost approximately $12,000

A lot of the doctors we saw, read the word balanced translocation and gave up on us. Dr. M [Dr. Jennifer Mersereau] spent lots of time going over our numbers and percentages, I felt like she was actually interested and cared about understanding our chromosome imbalance.... She went over our odds on IVF thoroughly. Because of our balanced translocation, we would benefit through PGD/PGS testing. This would reduce our risk of miscarriage from 48% to 5%. Even after a miscarriage when I told her I wanted to try one more time naturally, she was supportive of our decision and didn't pressure us into IVF.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
We've had a rocky road of miscarriages, molar pregnancies and chemical pregnancies. A molar pregnancy missed due to the Doctor's lack of follow up and reading of the pathology report after my first D&C. Through this process, I have been to several doctors all over the triangle, 3 gynos, 2 specialists and 2 IVF doctors. UNC fertility has been the most responsive and caring clinic I've been to so far. They actually care about you and your specific situation. I had one doctor that basically told us to go straight to a sperm donor, which was frustrating because we understood our odds and we knew there was a chance for us to conceive using our sperm and egg. A lot of the doctors we saw, read the word balanced translocation and gave up on us. Dr. M spent lots of time going over our numbers and percentages, I felt like she was actually interested and cared about understanding our chromosome imbalance.

We used clomid for two cycles, one cycle ended in a Chemical pregnancy. I've just started the IVF process and will be going in next Friday for my first injection.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility.
Most of my appointments prior to IVF were covered by insurance. The IVF process we were told it would be around 25,000- 30,000 depending on which medications will be covered and the final pricing from Genesis for PGD/PGS
Describe Jennifer Mersereau's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at UNC Fertility.
Dr. Mersereau encourages only 1 embryo transfer. They've had a great success rate on 1. She explained that 2 embryos can lead to twins or even quadruplets which can be dangerous/ high risk pregnancies.

I felt as though Dr. Mersereau was going through the emotions with me. She was supportive and honest/direct during my care. I will never forget the sorrow in her voice when she called to inform me of my chemical pregnancy.... I feel like if you are looking for a more “outside of the box” approach then this is not the right Dr for you. I love Dr. M and all of her recommendations are evidenced based. Basically if it doesn’t show higher/better success rates it’s not typically recommended.
The office [UNC Fertility] is very clean and all staff member are friendly and warm. I do feel as though the attention I received overall during the IVF process was much better than with IUI cycles. You often see all the REs in the practice so might be disappointed when “your” RE isn’t performing a procedure. I also liked that the RE did ultrasounds during monitoring appointments.... I believe about 12,000 for IVF cycle plus meds, they did offer the multiple cycle program. 623 IUI

I started my first cycle with lupron, that cycle was cancelled as I was oversupressed. 2nd, lupron removed from cycle 6 eggs 3 fertilized, 2 transferred on day 3 and resulted in chemical pregnancy 3rd same meds with HgH added along with acupuncture. 12 eggs, 10 fertilized, 1 5aa transferred and 3 frozen (4ab,4bb, 4bb)

We decided early on that we would transfer what the RE recommended. We saw Dr. Stein for that transfer and she felt the other that were still progressing had a better chance to be successful with another day of growth and used for FET later.

Dr. Mersereau was so invested in helping us start a family. She cried with me when we heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time and cheered us on every time we had another great appointment and ultrasound. She made us feel so comfortable. I still send her updates on my son now and he's 10 months old.... I had to have a number of different tests done to help determine why I was having recurrent losses. She found I was pre-diabetic and also had adhesions in my uterus from the miscarriages. I followed a very strict diet and exercise plan and prepped for surgery to remove the adhesions.
The staff [UNC Fertility] is great and the clinic is very clean. They make dealing with billing easy too -whether that's through insurance or not. Sometimes the waiting could be full so wait time could sometimes feel long but they have complimentary beverages and a TV to keep you occupied while you wait.... The nurses were always so compassionate and nice. They always made me feel comfortable.... Dr. Mersereau was so invested in helping us start a family.

She [Dr. Merereau] is excellent and professional. She listened and gave good feedback. She gave realistic expectations and was compassionate when I had a miscarriage. I am not sure she was aware of the miscommunication that was going on in the clinic between patients and staff...Maybe if I made follow up visits with her I wouldn't have had so many miscommunications with the staff...Dr. M is great.
The office [UNC] needs to have a stronger organizational structure in order for me to recommend anyone to come to this clinic. I could have come at a bad time (changing of administration). I had a botched IUI and twice they said I never called to schedule my IUI (notifying of period), even though I called and talked to the nurse who had to get my clomid prescribed. They did an IUI even though it was clear I had already ovulated....They had different information and instructions depending on the nurse and the day I called. I felt like it took a long time to get a clear response...

She [Dr Mersereau] was very direct and to the point, but did it in a way that was warm and not condescending. She explained every aspect of treatment, and was very conservative in how she approached our situation. So each step was gentle and not overly aggressive/invasive. I walked out of each appointment feeling confident we were going to get our baby.
Wendy and Kim [at UNC Fertility] were the nurses I worked with most closely. They heard me cry over the phone a couple of times and they were so incredibly compassionate. They talked me through my questions and never seemed rushed or like they didn't care. Priscilla was magical at drawing blood.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Trust her instincts. I was very well informed and wanted to jump the gun with treatments and testing. She kindly shut all of that down and helped me slow down. We ended up pregnant after three cycles.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
I had a history of PCOS, irregular cycles and anovulation. We started with 5mg of letrozole on CD3-5, then I had an ultrasound to check follicle growth and then we were asked to have timed intercourse. She wanted to try this protocol for 3-6 cycles to give us an equal chance at ovulation/conception as any other fertile couple (20%).

Modern, calm, organized, clean.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility.
We just paid for genetic testing, medicine costs and a specialist copay at each visit. Everything else was billed through insurance.

She [Dr. Mersereau] seems to deeply care about the patients and was always honest with me. I especially appreciated her illustrations that explained the process in complete detail. We haven’t been lucky as far as are results yet, but will continue on with her. She is very sympathetic when calling about a negative test which I appreciate too. ... She was always warm and explained everything.
Great clinic [UNC Fertility]! ... Helpful, always available on the portal, even outside of work hours! Love them [nurses]. ... Don’t only pay attention to stats because some clinics that are not private will accept harder cases. This includes top notch university ones. The only downside of UNC is the waiting room is very crowded. It is sad to see so many people going through this. At some point, they may need to expand the waiting room.

I didn't feel like I was at a doctor's office. It felt like I was talking to a friend. She [Dr. Jennifer Mersereau] never rushed us, never gave us clinical mumbo jumbo, but completely explained every step of the process. Made us feel hopeful again.... Everyone we met at UNC was great. Everyone was kind and communication was great. They explained finances to us in detail.
I really can't even begin to explain how amazing Kimberly [a nurse at UNC Fertility-Raleigh] was. She was so responsive to emails and always gave me quick, accurate information. She made me feel in control and knowledgeable at the same time. She even communicated with me after hours - who does that!!!... Everyone we met at UNC was great. She [Dr. Jennifer Mersereau] was helpful and understanding. I thought I would see her more times than I did but I felt in good care at each visit...IUI first (four of them) and then if we were ready, IVF. I was rx Femara while going through IUI and then had to go onto BC for almost a month to prep for egg retrieval. We were unexplained so if we had wanted to continue trying to conceive naturally she did not not support those efforts. We decided we were ready after one year...She would answer my questions and made me feel like she had time to address my concerns...Due to my age we transferred Singleton in hopes of achieving one healthy pregnancy and birth.
[UNC Fertility is] fine. It’s the insurance or lack thereof that is troublesome. The facility is clean and one of the best...[nurses were] Very responsive via email and phone...I had to pay almost 2k to begin to the clinic. This is with insurance. Then still with insurance I paid nearly 2k for meds. The rest was about 2k for the process itself...IUI first (four of them) and then if we were ready, IVF. Unfortunately there are just so many unknowns. And the Dr does not have a crystal ball. If she were accurate on everything which is nearly impossible I would have given her a ten. She was helpful and understanding. I thought I would see her more times than I did but I felt in good care at each visit.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
As an IVF patient in general, please know that the process takes time, regardless of your doctor. It takes time, patience and lots of faith. It is simply hurry up and wait.

Dr. Mersereau keeps my husband and I informed and engaged. Her communication and interaction has been professional on a personal level. We’re very comfortable and trust her medical advices. After leaving every visit, we always leave with a plan. The experience has giving us hope in conceiving...went through the HGS procedure and very happy with my ovarian reserves. No blockages. The only thing left to do is the semen analysis for my husband, then on to the next steps.
The waiting room [at UNC Fertility] always seemed full and crowded. This is usually with early morning appointments. Scheduling appointments after 10AM works best. Overall, the wait before seeing the doctor is very minimal. The staff always keeps you informed and progressing during the visit...All of the staff were readily available to assist. Very welcoming

She rushes through appointments. She doesn't follow up well on test results, leaving you to figure out what they mean. When I did end up pregnant she seemed unexcited, and telling her it ended in miscarriage phased her even less.
The support staff [at UNC Fertility] is great with communication. Getting an appointment can be difficult if you are looking for a specific day or time. They draw all of their own labs so you do not have to travel to another location...On my initial visit I had a ton of labs drawn. Once they all resulted i got an email that they were in my portal so I went and looked at them. On the reports there were no explanations and no one called me to tell me about my results I had to figure them out on my own.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Dr. M on consultation was warm, inviting, and thorough. She explained everything to us and ordered so many tests. Once the tests came back, however, I was left to figure out what they meant on my own. Same thing happened with my husband's sperm analysis. We ended up pregnant on our last round of letrozole and when I messaged her to tell her the news she was not excited she had me call to get an HCG check. Once the HCG was completed we went in for an ultrasound, she was extremely cold, there was no smile, no sincere congratulations just a "yup there's a baby, there's the sac, you can go to your regular doctor now" and she just left the room. We found out a few weeks later that we had a missed miscarriage we sent a message letting her know and she just said "that stinks, let me know when you have a period again" no mention of what the plan might be next.
