to say [Dr. Jerome Check] is unconventional is an understatement...only met with him twice during our 5 cycles...I did not feel heard at all...mixed up information and lost pieces of our file...did an IUI even though I had a history of not releasing and I did not ovulate...felt like he was completely disconnected
strength of [Cooper Institute] is that they are willing to work with woman who would otherwise be turned away... weaknesses...so disorganized, and many cycles medications were messed up due to communication issues...lack of empathy from the entire team, especially the nurses. It is extremely hard to get a hold of anyone
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Dr Check is highly regarded as an expert in his field and many women have gotten pregnant under his care. Although, to say he is unconventional is an understatement. We only met with him twice during our 5 cycles. It felt like he was completely disconnected and uninvested in our situation, and spent the overwhelming majority of the time citing studies (that are not necessarily validated or able to be replicated - mainly anecdotal). In our more than 4 hour long consult, we spent the majority of the time talking about his studies and not our particular case. I did not feel heard at all, but pushed through because of the overwhelming number of positive stories I have heard about him. Ultimately I did not feel heard at all. He mixed up information and lost pieces of our file - which is all on paper. It was clear he did not have a clear understanding of our case at all. And described us as "rare". When I asked if it was recommended based on my case if we should do IVF he said it was up to me. Of course it is up to us, but I was waiting on his expert opinion to weigh in and make a decision. I found out after leaving that based on my case (because I have tubal issues) IVF is the only solution and this should have been obvious to any RE.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Honestly, I would only go here as a last resort after doing ALL of your research. He has a specific group of meds that he uses that are extremely unconventional, although they do work (sometimes, for some people). He claims these meds are without risks and side effects and they are NOT. I tried them, against my better judgement, and had major side effects. When I reported that to the clinic, it fell on deaf ears. I ended up in a much worse situation because of his protocol, and I would never recommend him.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Dr Check meets with his patients and does try to listen to their unique stories.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
Cycle 1: monitoring with progesterone Cycle 2: monitoring with progesterone and trigger shot (pregnly) - eggs did not release Cycle 3: monitoring with EE, progesterone, trigger shot (pregnyl) and estrace - eggs did not release Cycle 4: monitoring with EE, progesterone, trigger shot (pregnyl) and estrace - eggs did not release Cycle 5 - monitoring with EE, progesterone, trigger shot (lupron+hcg) and estrace - did an IUI even though I had a history of not releasing and I did not ovulate
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
There is 1 good nurse on this team, and she is cited in previous reviews. My worst experience with this clinic is because of the nursing team. They are so disorganized, and many cycles medications were messed up due to communication issues. Different nurses would call me all the time to tell me important information over the phone. There is no direct line of communication to them. There was an extreme lack of empathy in my case that I actually can't even believe. On my third cycle, I received a call during work that my pregnancy test was negative. The nurse said to me "I always wait to call you last because it is never good news". I was already feeling hopeless, but this crushed me. I was diagnosed with endo by a nurse, not a doctor. She told me to take one of my husbands medications until I could get prescribed this controlled substance myself. It was just a mess all around.
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
The strength of this clinic is that they are willing to work with woman who would otherwise be turned away. The weaknesses are MANY. The lack of empathy from the entire team, especially the nurses. It is extremely hard to get a hold of anyone. There is pressure to conform to the doctors self researched protocols. If you are harmed in this process (which I was) they will completely ignore you. I had med side effects that I left 3 messages about and no one called me back. I am an extremely organized person, and even I couldn't keep up with the chaos of this practice. I ended up with worse fertility stats after I left as his protocol worsened my endo. They missed tube blockages that could have caused miscarriage. I had a terrible experience.

You will also need to be prepared to explore some unconventional approaches to fertility treatment [with Dr. Jerome Check]...he was driven by the curiosity of different cases and finding an approach that worked best for each patient rather than referring everyone right away for expensive IVF treatments...put me on adderall right away, which he had papers on to show a correlation with increased success in fertility treatments. He also found that I had low thyroid and started me on synthroid. Dr. Check's first approach was to have me try to get pregnant with timed intercourse and just support my luteal phase with progesterone, where he first suspected my miscarriages stemmed from. I had a lot of success naturally getting pregnant, just not staying pregnant. However, during my first cycle being monitored, it was discovered that I was ovulating prematurely and my follicl
The nursing staff at Dr. Check's office [Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] are the staff you communicate with most. They were knowledgeable and thorough...I was definitely in the minority being a non-IVF patient there...is much lower cost than other options in the area. They also look for other approaches rather than just IVF...First off, you get a full battery of tests. Bloods, ultrasounds, testing for your partner, etc. Once it was determined that my partner wasn't contributing to my infertility and that my anatomy was normal, we decided on a treatment plan.
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Check is very research & data driven, which I appreciate. He was recommended to me by a family member who described him as "unconventional" which I agree with. He looks for treatment options that are outside of the box and does not push people into the most expensive treatment options right away, which I appreciate. After your initial consult & course of treatment are set, you will deal mostly with nurses (this was my experience as a non-IVF patient). If you want Dr. Check directly involved, you will need to request phone calls or appointments for that. When we were going to make a change in my treatment plan, I did request a call with Dr. Check to make sure I understood the path forward and he called me that week before we went ahead with the next cycle.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Check is straightforward, and not necessarily "warm & fuzzy." Infertility is a tough journey and some may expect/desire more support from their care providers. If you don't have a strong support system outside of the office, you probably will not find it there. However, after several months with the staff, I was able to build a rapport with them and they are especially kind to me this time around, as a recurring patient with a 2 year old daughter thanks to them. You will also need to be prepared to explore some unconventional approaches to fertility treatment. But, I found it refreshing that he was driven by the curiosity of different cases and finding an approach that worked best for each patient rather than referring everyone right away for expensive IVF treatments.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Check was willing to treat me when other doctor's felt that I was too young and should just "keep trying." He respected my gut instinct that my miscarriages were not coincidence and through testing found many issues contributing to them. For my first appointment, he was extremely flexible and I was able to do my consult and new patient testing on an evening to accommodate my work schedule. I have a background in Science and really appreciated how into detail he went about the mechanisms of the different treatment options and that he supplied me with his medical papers on the topics.

First off, you get a full battery of tests. Bloods, ultrasounds, testing for your partner, etc. Once it was determined that my partner wasn't contributing to my infertility and that my anatomy was normal, we decided on a treatment plan. He also put me on adderall right away, which he had papers on to show a correlation with increased success in fertility treatments. However, during my first cycle being monitored, it was discovered that I was ovulating prematurely and my follicles were small and immature when released, so we did not attempt pregnancy in that cycle. For the next cycle, I used FSH to stimulate follicle growth, Cetrotide to suppress my LH, hCG to trigger ovulation, timed intercourse with my husband, lupron to promote implantation, and several forms of progesterone (oral & 2 types of suppositories) support in my luteal phase. I was unsuccessful in that cycle and the next, and after the third cycle I had an endometrial scratch procedure after my negative pregnancy test. The next cycle, my treatment plan was the same and I successfully became pregnant. After my positive pregnancy test, my blood & ultrasound were heavily monitored by the nurses. I was kept on progesterone until close to 20 weeks, was also taking estradiol to support my estrogen levels, and was kept on pelvic protection until 20 weeks due to some unexplained bleeding early in pregnancy. I also continued my adderall through the first trimester. As someone who experienced pregnancy loss, I appreciated the heavy monitoring throughout my early pregnancy.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff at Dr. Check's office are the staff you communicate with most. They were knowledgeable and thorough. I had one primary nurse and a few that would fill in when she wasn't there. They can sometimes seem rushed when they call you with results/instructions, but if you ask them to slow down/repeat they are great.
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Cooper Institute is much lower cost than other options in the area. They also look for other approaches rather than just IVF. I was definitely in the minority being a non-IVF patient there, but some doctors would have sent me right to that option. Something that was inconvenient for me was that the office in PA, which is closer to my house, was only open during limited hours for blood & ultrasounds and then 2 days/week for full days. I had to go to the NJ office a few times per cycle depending on when my cycle days fell and that was inconvenient. However, it was a small price to pay to get to the end result. Just something for new patients to be aware of.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
My procedures & medications were well covered by my insurance company with the exception of the lupron which was only 1 dose/cycle. Each occasion of blood & ultrasound was ~$35 out of pocket, and medications were ~$150 per cycle overall. One time when I needed to get a cetrotide dose the same day to prevent ovulating & losing the cycle, they had one on site that they gave to me free of charge since my insurance mandated a mail-in pharmacy use.

Dr Check is an exceptional doctor. Brilliant in fact. He can provide treatment no other doctor is willing to try. Unfortunately he is not as hands on as a patient would expect.... I had 4 appointments with Dr. Check over a 2 year period. He was attentive, sympathetic, and provided lots of info.... The remainder of my care was left to an intern and nurse who reviewed my blood and ultrasound results and provided instructions.
Strength [of Cooper Institute]: treatment options available, particularly patients turned away from other clinics that can’t be bothered to try treating you because the perceive the success rate to be to low. Weakness: lack of attention to detail. Nurses barely read my file. Overlooked key information such as my age and history.... It’s described as a self directing free flowing office. If your new to infertility or IVF you will be at a disadvantage.

I had 4 appointments with Dr. Check over a 2 year period. He was attentive, sympathetic, and provided lots of info. He was candid about my situation but was very positive and upbeat. They were unaware of the details unique to my situation until I pointed them out.

Strength: treatment options available, particularly patients turned away from other clinics that can’t be bothered to try treating you because the perceive the success rate to be to low. Weakness: lack of attention to detail. Nurses barely read my file. Overlooked key information such as my age and history. I had to nearly manage my own care. For example I was given instructions to bring on men’s traction at 30 days when my history of ovulating was around 45 days. I was once incorrectly instructed to inject follistim because they failed to notice my age. I was told I didn’t need an ultrasound the day before my retrieval. It’s these details that can make or break each patients outcome.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
I’m extremely sensitive to medications. I felt like my retrieval was a circus. I probably didn’t need the additional follistim and I’m relatively certain I ovulated the morning before taking the trigger shot. When I told the nurse I had a high fever and felt the ovulation she said maybe, but blew me off - they don’t track body temp. Needless to say they were all surprised the day of retrieval that both follicles released early. I wasn’t. They ended up giving me IUI, 48 hours after I knew I ovulated. Had I kept my ultrasound appointment the nurse told me was not needed the day before maybe IUI would have had a better chance. Lack of individual attention to detail over all. Get them in, get them out mentality. The head nurse gave me the cash paid portion of my money back and said “Now your can go shopping.” After the IUI, one nurse asked if I could remain in the room for 20 minutes but the head nurse was in a big hurry to get me out of the room. I went outside and laid on a bench while I waited for my husband to pick me up. When we tried to get a refund for the retrieval that never happened our numerous calls were not returned. After 2 month of ignoring our calls my husband had to leave work and go there to force billing to credit our credit card. Awful experience.

Dr. Check was the first doctor that didn’t make me feel like a number. He truly gave me a chance and believed in me. Even when I felt defeated. He is an out of the box thinker (and a little quirky) but so very good at what he does...I did a natural cycle with him and got pregnant my first month (after 2 years of trying IVF and IUI at other clinics)...doesnt push donor eggs like my experience with other clinics. He does things a little different and a little old school---but his methods can really work...
I was an out of state patient and was therefore did local monitoring. I communicated with Cooper staff mostly via phone after each monitoring appt and they would give me a call back once they got results. Its a little "old school" of a process but it worked and never had any issues getting a call by the end of the day while monitoring. Nurses were very responsive if I called with any questions...
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Went to Dr.Check after not having good experiences at 2 other clinics in Florida. I have DOR/low amh and I wanted to go to a doctor that specializes in it. Dr. Check was the first doctor that didn’t make me feel like a number. He truly gave me a chance and believed in me. Even when I felt defeated. He is an out of the box thinker (and a little quirky) but so very good at what he does. I’m so glad I took the chance to go out of state for care. I did a natural cycle with him and got pregnant my first month (after 2 years of trying IVF and IUI at other clinics). I’m halfway through my pregnancy and I know I have Dr check to thank for my miracle.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
The clinic isn't as fancy and he isn't as polished as some other RE's but he's the real deal. He doesn't care about his stats and doesnt push donor eggs like my experience with other clinics. He does things a little different and a little old school---but his methods can really work. While the other two RE's i went to pushed IVF right away, he told me he could get me pregnant without IVF and he proved those RE's and me wrong.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
It's a small office and staff was very warm and welcoming. I flew from Miami for my consult and I was able to get a lot of things done during my consult which was great (bloodwork, ultrasound, post coital test, etc).
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
Medicated Natural cycle--Timed Intercourse. He used intense monitoring via bloodwork and ultrasound to see what my body was naturally doing on its own and then helped it along (in my case I needed progesterone)

I was an out of state patient and was therefore did local monitoring. I communicated with Cooper staff mostly via phone after each monitoring appt and they would give me a call back once they got results. Its a little "old school" of a process but it worked and never had any issues getting a call by the end of the day while monitoring. Nurses were very responsive if I called with any questions (I would leave a voicemail and they would call me back usually by the end of the day). I usually didnt get a hold of someone right away though
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
The clinic isn't new or fancy/modern so that could be a con for some people. For me it wasn't. After coming from 2 very big and modern (and expensive) clinics I liked the "home" feel of Cooper institute. They are a little "old school"---not a lot of things are done electronically or via email and they dont have a portal but they usually get things done accordingly and as needed. Overall, I think they are organized and have a good system in place
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
An estimated $1500 total cost for a natural timed intercourse cycle with Dr. Check. They have an out of state monitoring fee during TI I think it was $300 and when I got pregnant there was another monitoring fee of about $400. My insurance covered my visits which had a $50 copay and also covered the medication I needed. I also paid copays for local monitoring (ultrasound and bloodwork)---i would say $550 total with copays. I also had to pay for flying to the consult.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Check sits down with you for as LONG as it takes to answer all your questions, reassure you that you're not damaged goods and does the most thorough exam on you all while getting your results stat and making funny jokes...You may not see him at every visit but if you need/ want to speak with him, the staff will set it up immediately...uses adderall and Lupron for implantation which I like...He specializes in hormonal disorders and is really against over-medicating. They never make you feel stupid or silly for wanting to come in and be seen. An IUI cycle is $435 plus meds and monitoring

He [Dr. Jerome Check] stated ICSI would be prepared and two embryos transferred. This didn’t happen as one embryo was transferred and my body was overstimulated. When originally I was told if this happen they would freeze all the embryos until my body calmed down...The appointments weren’t intimate and or personal you were in and out literally... is very knowledgeable about infertility and reads lots of statistics. However, he doesn’t practice so seeing him makes it hard to take into consideration his opinion. The other doctor did my retrieval and transfer and I didn’t know her at all. Check was personal and neither was his staff
They [The nurses at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] were always in a rush and would call me late in the day with what mediations to take during my cycle. It was rushed and left me at times feeling alone and confused about the injections and if I was doing it right...when I called to pay my quarterly payment for my embryos in storage. I was told I only had 12 eggs in storage when after the transfer I had 15. I was unaware of this and don’t have paperwork to confirm this. I still don’t know what was wrong with those 3 embryos all I was told is they were discarded
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Check is very knowledgeable about infertility and reads lots of statistics. However, he doesn’t practice so seeing him makes it hard to take into consideration his opinion. The other doctor did my retrieval and transfer and I didn’t know her at all. Check was personal and neither was his staff
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Be open and ok with being left on your own to weather the storm of infertility. Make sure to advocate for yourself
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
The appointments weren’t intimate and or personal you were in and out literally. If I was waiting I was waiting and felt to be sitting too long nurses would take their time to do bloodwork and ultrasounds
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
He stated ICSI would be prepared and two embryos transferred. This didn’t happen as one embryo was transferred and my body was overstimulated. When originally I was told if this happen they would freeze all the embryos until my body calmed down
Describe your experience with your nurse at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Kathy Hallahan)
They were always in a rush and would call me late in the day with what mediations to take during my cycle. It was rushed and left me at times feeling alone and confused about the injections and if I was doing it right
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The cost of the cycle was inexpensive; however the thing that really bothered me is the lack of support and community from the staff. I felt alone during a time support was needed. I was left to make many decisions without lots of help from a staff that was supposed to assist me with the rollercoaster of emotions I was feeling. I was scared and uncertain
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
4,525( IVF Procedure) 1,100(ICSI) 1,600( Blood&Ultrasounds)
Describe Jerome Check's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Check seemed alright with transferring multiple but the doctor who did my transfer was described to me As “unorthodox” so transferring more than one wasn’t be in her plan

Recently back in Natch when I called to pay my quarterly payment for my embryos in storage. I was told I only had 12 eggs in storage when after the transfer I had 15. Success w/ Doc Too early to know
He has a very different approach to the other two doctors I had for treatment and another doctor I had a consultation with years ago. He is quirky and funny. My husband and I went in prepared that day for possibly receiving bad news. Dr. check was completely the opposite....At our consultation they could see from ultrasound (and bloodwork confirmed the next day as well) I was about to ovulate so Dr Check went right into action; with my husband’s sample being as good as it was he took part of the sample
Jackie is excellent. She is the nurse who has done both of my post-coital tests. It is her or Tabatha or Kathy who have called me in the afternoon to discuss my blood work results and give me further instructions.... Strengths [Cooper Institute]: thinking outside the box and getting to really know you. Bloodwork Weaknesses: no patient portal to see results. Not much contact with Dr Check directly after initial consultation, at least for us with our 2 natural cycles. He commonly prescribes Adderral and much higher does of progesterone
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Going into this appointment being our third doctor in 10 months and several failed or incomplete IVF cycles, he gave us much more hope in ourselves than we ever imagined having at this point. our unexplained diagnosis turning into diminished ovarian reserve and my numbers changing in the last few months and turning 38, we were prepared to talk about if we should move onto donor eggs and not even try IVF with him or thinking we could try a cycle of IVF with him since he is less expensive and then donor eggs if needed. He was extremely comforting and telling us that he has helped many couples in that specific area become pregnant on their own without IVF or donor eggs. He has a very different approach to the other two doctors I had for treatment and another doctor I had a consultation with years ago. He is quirky and funny. My husband and I went in prepared that day for possibly receiving bad news. Dr. check was completely the opposite. It is only a month since we started there so it’s too soon to tell if our renewed accurate or not. But he handed us articles as certain topics came up in our discussion and he showed us other foot notes on his desk of studies that he has conducted. He seems extremely knowledgeable.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Be prepared to be there for 2 to 3 hours at your first appointment, for male to give semen analysis and receive results back while there that day, female exam, bloodwork and ultrasound done as well, which his staff will advise you of when you make the appointment. Out of four consults we’ve had in our life for Ivf and infertility treatments this was definitely the most comprehensive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
At the consultation he does not want to see records from other doctors; he wants to hear from you directly and ask you questions. We were at our consultation for 3 1/2 hours we left that day with a completely different outlook that what we had from our last failed IVF cycle at another clinic.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
At our consultation they could see from ultrasound (and bloodwork confirmed the next day as well) I was about to ovulate so Dr Check went right into action; with my husband’s sample being as good as it was he took part of the sample and he did an inter-cervical insemination. He explained and I have never heard this before even though I’ve had four IUIs in my life that the sperm can live longer in your cervix then when they do an IUI. With an IUI they wash the sperm, which I was familiar with that term. The washed sperm can only live for four hours, not a few days like when you have relations naturally. This was very exciting leaving our consultation with a plan in place and started. I went back the next day for a post-coital test, which I had read about years ago in a book but never had any other fertility dr say they used this method of testing. The nurse could see the next morning that the sperm were alive and swimming fast in my cervical mucus. They let me look under the microwave too and it was incredible. I then went back a couple days later to make sure that the follicle size had decreased and that I had ovulated also having blood work taken and started progesterone suppositories and pill. He also prescribed Adderall at my consultation he explained about how this can help with implantation and other factors. I was a little surprised by this medication recommendation and how it would make me feel, but I was willing to try it and I haven’t had any major side effects. I did not become pregnant the first cycle. We are repeating a natural cycle right now before deciding if we will try more natural cycle with monitoring or move to IVF
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
Jackie is excellent. She is the nurse who has done both of my post-coital tests. It is her or Tabatha or Kathy who have called me in the afternoon to discuss my blood work results and give me further instructions.
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
Strengths: thinking outside the box and getting to really know you. Bloodwork Weaknesses: no patient portal to see results. Not much contact with Dr Check directly after initial consultation, at least for us with our 2 natural cycles. He commonly prescribes Adderral and much higher does of progesterone than I was given by other 2 clinics. Offers a donor egg share program.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
Our 2 months of natural cycle monitoring are covered and being billed to insurance. We are responsible for copays. I guess it qualifies as diagnostic. If we continue natural cycle monitoring it will be $1600 for bloodwork and ultrasound package. If we do IVF it will be about $5-6,000 for whole process -retrieval and transfer, including anesthesia. Meds are covered.
Describe Jerome Check's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
We really didn’t discuss the details of IVF and transfers. Dr Check did sound like he does not feel that genetic testing is necessary in our case or worth the cost.

He [Dr. Check] is a great physician. He has a lot of research studies he has performed to back the reasons he does the treatments he does. You do not have to wait long for blood work and ultrasounds. Explains everything!... You do not see him every visit but the visits are quick and nurses will call you after.... My first cycle I was overstimmed from previous doctor so we did birth control. Then, we saw what my body did and I did ovulate on my own and we did progesterone supplementation after ovulation. This resulted in chemical pregnancy.
The nurses [Cooper Institute] were great. I mainly worked with the regular nurses. I really appreciated Tabitha and Jackie’s thoroughness and quick calls back. Kathy was very very compassionate.... The prices were great. You do have to pay for monitoring if your insurance does not cover it but for IVF their prices are the best in the area/... When you go for ultrasound and blood work you do not see a doctor or nurse which has its pros and cons. You are in and out but you do not know your plan until later in the day when the nurses call you. Treatment is individualized which is great!

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr check is an unconventional dr who definitely does old school testing to try to get to the root of the problem. I do appreciate that but sometimes I think there can be other issues at hand which he dismisses.... We had a very lengthy first consult, I was there for 4 hours and this is partially because I have an extensive history with no real reasons showing why I cannot conceive. He provides you with tons of research articles at your visit which back up his ideas of implementing adderall, extra progesterone, and a lupron shot in the luteal phase
Be prepared to have very old school communication via faxes to get scripts..etc because they [Cooper Institute] don't use email.... I did out of town monitoring and you need to leave messages every time you get blood or ultra sound done with 2 different phone lines or fax them a sheet. If you want to speak to a nurse you need to leave a message and pray they call you back that same day, once or twice they didn't. You just really need to be on top of everything
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Dr check is an unconventional dr who definitely does old school testing to try to get to the root of the problem. I do appreciate that but sometimes I think there can be other issues at hand which he dismisses. Prior to dr Check I was seeing a reproductive immunologist who found some immune issues. I did not have success with that dr however brought up these immune issues. Dr check didnt really believe in them and believes adderall will cover all immune issues. We had a very lengthy first consult, I was there for 4 hours and this is partially because I have an extensive history with no real reasons showing why I cannot conceive. He provides you with tons of research articles at your visit which back up his ideas of implementing adderall, extra progesterone, and a lupron shot in the luteal phase of your dr. I do appreciate how research oriented he is but at the same time he did not seem open minded to other tests I have done such as the EFT, ERA, immune testing...etc He also wants to save you money which I appreciate so he initially likes to get you pregnant using timed intercourse on his protocol. I never conceived naturally in the 7 years I have been trying and my husband has a balanced translocation. However I do know other patients that got pregnant with that issue so I figured it cant hurt to try for a few months because prior to him I was doing very intense immune treatments with another dr so can use a break. Ive done 2 cycles so far and no luck yet however they found my progesterone was on the low side despite all the suppositories and oral meds I was on. I am trying to avoid PIO because I got nerve damage from it during a transfer cycle. I will be meeting with him again in a few weeks to talk about my case again and see if he has other ideas. He seems very knowledgeable but he is somewhat scattered and goes off on tangents during the consult. This was frustrating to me because I kept feeling like I had to refocus him. However because I personally know a few women who had success with him after so many failures with IVF I figured it cant hurt to try.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Be prepared to get lots of research backing up his ideas however all this research he did himself. Be prepared to have very old school communication via faxes to get scripts..etc because they don't use email. He also records your consult via tape recorder so you can get that to refer back to. You need to be on top of everything at this clinic. There is also a somewhat long wait to see this dr in person.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
I am doing out of town monitoring with this doctor because I live in NY and he is located in NJ. However I did need to go there several times for endometrial scratch, consult, post coital test...etc The clinic itself makes you feel like a number and everything is very much outdated. You cannot email anything and everything has to be via fax. I dont feel like the nurses that call me with results remember my case because they make errors with my medications at times.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
Like I mentioned, Dr check likes to try to get you pregnant naturally eventhough you never conceived naturally before and have had many failed transfers with PGD tested embryos. He doesnt believe in using letrozole or clomid if you can make an egg on your own. He has you do a scan to make sure you released an egg and then another scan to ensure your lining thickened appropriately. He does a post coital test to ensure your husbands sperm still survives in your cervix 24 hours after intercourse. He puts you on adderall to control inflammation and other issues and uses extra progesterone and one lupron shot during luteal phase.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
There are a few nurses who you deal with and depending on who gets your results first, that nurse will call you with results. My medication protocols got confused at times because not all nurses communicated well with each other. You also need to be on top of them to get results in a timely manner. I found this all very stressful. Ive worked with so many clinics and I never had to be so on top of everything like this before but I was willing to try since I heard some amazing success stories. Jackie is the most compassionate nurse, Tabatha and Kathy tend to rush you on the phone and seem annoyed if you have too many questions.
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
Everything is very old school like I mentioned before. I did out of town monitoring and you need to leave messages every time you get blood or ultra sound done with 2 different phone lines or fax them a sheet. If you want to speak to a nurse you need to leave a message and pray they call you back that same day, once or twice they didn't. You just really need to be on top of everything more so than any other of the 5 clinics I have been to.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
I was doing out of town monitoring so had to pay $195 for that fee. Enometrial scratch, post coital..etc went through insurance and so did bloods and scan

He [Dr. Check] will listen to all your questions and tell you point blank what he agrees with and disagrees with. ... He also used Adderall to combat inflammation associated with my endometriosis. ... If you have an unusual case he will work hard at trying to solve the problem that other doctors have failed to solve. ... He knows so much about reproductive endocrinology and isn’t afraid to do things out of the norm if he has strong convictions about his course of action.
The front desk staff [Cooper Inst] are so kind and warm. They remember you and root you on every step of the way. The ultrasound techs are not that warm but it’s easy to get over that. The IVF nurses need a serious attitude adjustment but the pregnancy nurses are sweet as anything. The exam rooms are outdated and feel dirty because they are carpeted.
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
He is a little quirky but in an intelligent mad-scientist kind of way. He knows so much about reproductive endocrinology and isn’t afraid to do things out of the norm if he has strong convictions about his course of action. He is considered a pioneer in his field but is often criticized but others in the infertility field and OB-GYNs because he is unconventional. That said, he has a reputation for being one of the best infertility doctors in the world. People travel from all over the world to see him. He doesn’t care about the money and refuses to take a salary so that he doesn’t have to be beholden to a quota system. He will listen to all your questions and tell you point blank what he agrees with and disagrees with. If you have an unusual case he will work hard at trying to solve the problem that other doctors have failed to solve.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Trust him. He is a wise and experienced man. If you let him do his magic he will get you pregnant.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
He is kind and very intelligent. He works really hard and smart to get people pregnant. He treats not only from evidence-based information but also anecdotal evidence. He cares a lot about helping people rather than making money.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
I don’t remember the name of my protocol for frozen embryo transfer. He used high doses of progesterone in oil, progesterone suppositories and oral progesterone. He also used Adderall to combat inflammation associated with my endometriosis. I had 2 frozen embryo transfers with another clinic and both times had severe cramping within 10 minutes of my embryo transfers which I believe to be the reason neither of them resulted in a pregnancy. Dr. Check agreed with that theory. Dr. Check gave me Adderall and Valium before my embryo transfer and I had no cramping.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders. (Assigned nurse: Karen)
The IVF nurses are not nice or caring at all. They don’t hold your hand or help explain things in detail. When you ask questions they act like you are a nuisance. They make you feel very uncomfortable. The pregnancy nurses are the complete opposite. They are very warm and caring.
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.

The IVF nurses need a serious attitude adjustment but the pregnancy nurses are sweet as anything. The exam rooms are outdated and feel dirty because they are carpeted. The whole office has an old-school vibe about it. Probably because Dr. Check is in his 70s and doesn’t like to adjust to all the new technology. It’s something to know when you go there for the first time so you’re not thrown off. It’s all easy to forgive because Dr. Check is so amazing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
I have done one frozen embryo transfer and the cost was around $3,000. When I told them my previous clinic charged less they gave me a discount
Describe Jerome Check's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
We had 1 PGS normal embryo remaining and 1 PGS mosaic embryo remaining. He suggested we transfer only the normal embryo to play it safe since mosaics have a higher rate of miscarriage and he didn’t want to jeopardize the pregnancy if I became pregnant with twins. We decided to transfer both embryos against his advice. I became pregnant with one baby and it turned out to be the mosaic embryo. She later tested completely normal from an amniocentesis which means Dr. Check’s theory that mosaic embryos self-correct was right.
What specific things went wrong at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to call with results
  • Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders.
I was given a different due date twice from the staff. Probably because they typically transfer day-3 embryos and I brought Day-5 embryos over from another clinic. Also the IVF nurses aren’t very responsive and failed to call in a prescription for me once and I had to call to remind them. They also have forgotten to call with results of my bloodwork related to my thyroid levels a couple of times

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Check is very thorough and talked to us for hours at our consult. I really enjoyed his perspective and he did a lot of work for us even on that first day....I left excited to try some new things. He is not only very smart but he is funny and made us comfortable.... Dr. Check did a new semen analysis for us as well as a cervical mucus test. He also had me do an ultrasound before and after ovulation as well as one 7 days past ovulation which I thought was extremely informative to me. We just started with him but I love that they monitor so closely, and I found that my lining is very thin a week after ovulation which may shed some light into our problems.
I like the way they [Cooper Institute] move patients in and out as it cuts down on wait time. It is a large facility with a lot of people there. It looks a bit out of date but that doesn’t make a difference to me. I think the setup works well and I enjoy the fact that you get a call back after almost every visit....The only reason I didn’t give a perfect score is that some of the staff is a little rough. They don’t always speak to you in a nice way or validate your concerns. But Dr. Check himself was great.

Don’t get discouraged if the staff seems to kind of shuffle people around. Some of the staff aren’t my favorite people but the upside of their process there is you don’t wait long which is amazing. Some people say they felt like cattle but for me running over on my lunch break, I don’t mind it because I usually am in and out very fast.

For now the costs seem in line with any other clinic, but from what I have seen, the ivf prices are very reasonable. They appear to be less costly than most places I have researched.

I believe dr. Check is very experienced and knowledgeable. After your consultation you are basically left in the hands of nurses that I would believe are reporting back to him. But I feels like once you leave the office your file is tucked away until you are back for another appointment. No follow up or anything. You are asked questions that you expect dr. Check to have went over and answered before your appointment...I feel like I am leading the team....
There is a break Communications amongst the team [at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine], patient need more aggressive approach to root cause issues, and finally the office staff/nurses need to be more compassionate and warm...I believe some improvement needs to made when it comes to communication and staying on top of things. I feel like I am leading the team....

Some days are better than others. Overall, I think they could be a little more compassionate and warm. And on top of things more
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic has a great Doctor as a leader; Dr. check is experience and knowledge but your team is only as strong and good as you, to make a great clinical experience for your patients. Dr Check did not think I needed IVF since I got pregnant twice on my own (miscarried once) so I wasted ALOT of time. He kept pushing me to just be patient. By the time he finally discovered the uterine scarring, my insurance no longer covered IVF and I was out of luck. I wish he had been more aggressive...is a bit scattered. He was great at our initial appointment, but after that---seemed very aloof. I was there for so long that they all got to know me very well, so that helped in not feeling like a number.
The clinic in NJ is beautiful and state of the art. They have a great waiting area and make it very comfortable for the patients. The location in PA is bizarre--Its like a weird, old home that happens to have ultrasound equipment in it. It is not comfortable or appealing at all!...The nurses were wonderful, for the most part. They provide the human part of this clinic...A few of the ultrasound techs would give me only pieces of information, leading to more confusion. Generally, they are nice. Jackie was really wonderful
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
This Doctor is a little odd. He's kind of like a mad scientist. He certainly thinks outside the box, and is willing to entertain any ideas you bring---if you have reasons to back it up. He has truly done wonders for some women. For me, I always felt worried that he didn't remember who I was, my story or my issues. I was constantly repeating myself during our meetings. He wasn't super compassionate. He wasn't nasty or anything--just kind "been there, done that." He seemed very unaffected by my desperation and worry.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
You'll need patience and a sense of humor. Trust, too--sometimes blindly.

Most of the nurses were great. The one who was with me when I miscarried was incredibly kind. Another got visibly annoyed with me when I got emotional about my diagnosis--so it varied greatly. A few of the ultrasound techs would give me only pieces of information, leading to more confusion. Generally, they are nice. Jackie was really wonderful

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
While nothing SPECIFICALLY went wrong, the office is a chaotic mess of paperwork. It worried me, to a degree--but Dr. Check came so highly recommended that I stayed for a while. I only wish the doctors had been more aggressive in my treatment.

He [Dr. Check] was very kind, very understanding of what we wanted in our procedure in starting a family... Me and my wife loved how he explained everything and was compassionate and kind, he also told us they have a program that would help us with the finances which was a big concern for us! We got accepted I tot he donor egg program where my wife will give 1/2 her eggs to a woman in need and in return the cooper institute will pay for our IVF procedure.
They [Cooper Institute] are very busy all the time, sometimes I can catch the coordinator or a nurse and sometimes I leave a message but they usually get back to me very quickly. They do make you feel at home like it’s all in good hands and put your trust in them and keep hope. So they do make you feel good going to them. They are understandable and very patient... my wife went into the donor egg program where they would pay for our treatment if my wife donates 1/2 her eggs chosen by a recipient

We got accepted I tot he donor egg program where my wife will give 1/2 her eggs to a woman in need and in return the cooper institute will pay for our IVF procedure. We waited 6 months out finally got chosen but the woman backed out and my wife got put back on the waiting list. The doctor did tell us this is a possibility, so we were aware that this could happen, but now we have hope somebody chooses my wife again and goes through with their procedure which will help us with having our own family one day
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?

Weakness would be as they are expanding it seems that things are getting missed up or the new nurses are not as up to date... They [nursing staff] seemed a bit rushed when on the phone . Needed to be reminded of my protocol ( I was on top of everything being a nurse practitioner. Dr check personally reviewed all my labs and told them exactly what meds I did next

Dr. Jerome Check is definitely a doctor I can recommend and can trust his words 100%. He is a very positive and caring doctor, he takes his time explaining everything throughoutly and can leave his clinic feeling positive and at peace.... I used injections, suppositories and oral medications. Letrazole to make me ovulate, side effects only pain in Breast, nothing major. Hcg injections, mophur, no side effects. And vaginal suppositories which are progesterones in case pregnancy took place it’ll help the uterus wall to sustain pregnancy if conceived. No side affects on suppositories.
The clinic itself [Cooper Institute] is excellent nurses and doctors are great and very thorough which is what you want when you are going through this type of process. In my experience I can’t complaint about this clinic overall, everyone from doctors to front desk ladies are really nice and helpful. They always call you on time to give you results and to Inform you about your next step. They positive attitude keeps you going and that’s so important to us the patients.

I felt like i was treated as a human because from nurses to doctors showed that they care for their patients and work along with them. Dr. Check and Dr. Choe show good side bed manners, you have questions or concerns they take their time to explain everything thoroughly. They make me feel comfortable and loved because they know this is not an easy path some of us go through trying to bring a baby in to ourlives. I love when I hear them say stay positive, have faith and don’t give up because we won’t on you. To me all those kind works means the world. I’ve been going through inferility treatments for over 7 years sometimes you do feel like giving up but something in my heart tells me not too. Hopefully one day my dream will come true which is to become a mother.

Dr. Check has Friday night consults and makes home calls. He will sit with you for 1-2 hours to discuss your options and your feelings/opinions on treatment in extreme detail. He will try old-fashioned and "outside the box" methods and tests when the typical methods prove unsuccessful....With the 2nd cycle, they performed a postcoital test which showed mostly dead sperm.... He added Mucinex to correct this, followed by another PC test which showed completely opposite and excellent results
The nursing staff [Cooper Inst] can be somewhat off-putting in person depending on the day. However, they are always available via phone to answer questions. When calling with blood results, they give you the specific levels each time and explain them, which is wonderful!... The clinic is very old-fashioned and disorganized in its methods which seems off-putting at first. Everything is mainly paper-based, you have to fill out forms every time, and you have to get used to their way of doing things. The PA office has short hours and so trips to the NJ office are necessary sometimes which can be a pain.
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Dr. Check is compassionate and thorough. He looked at our prior experience and tests and developed a specific, individualized plan. He monitors very often to ensure that he truly understands your cycle and its patterns, strengths, and downfalls. He performed tests such as the postcoital and identified problems that had never been considered in our prior experiences with othet clinics. In consults, he is aware of your individual struggles and history because he takes the time to know and understand you. He also communicates with his staff often and adjusts the plan as you go along. He listens to your concerns and takes them seriously.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Understand that while his methods seem a bit outdated and crazy, he cares about each individual person and will literally try anything within the realm of fertility care to get you pregnant.

Dr. Check has Friday night consults and makes home calls. He will sit with you for 1-2 hours to discuss your options and your feelings/opinions on treatment in extreme detail. He will try old-fashioned and "outside the box" methods and tests when the typical methods prove unsuccessful. For instance, he performed a postcoital test on us. Some clinics may call this outdated, but it shed light on our situation by revealing that my body may have been killing my husband's sperm all along. He's very anti-establishment and realistic and cares deeply about his patients' well-being.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
Dr. Check immediately ruled out Clomid and Letrozole due to the fact that it can cause more problems than solutions. He also showed us that IUI success rates are not actually great for our situation since we had good sperm analysis results. He opted to have us try "natural cycles" with timed intercourse and progesterone. With the 1st cycle, he monitored so closely that they increased progesterone to ensure that my lining was perfect. With the 2nd cycle, they performed a postcoital test which showed mostly dead sperm. He added Mucinex to correct this, followed by another PC test which showed completely opposite and excellent results, meaning that my cervical mucus may have been the problem all along and that the Mucinex had thinned it out to allow sperm to pass through more easily and live longer. He also prescribed a Lupron injection each month along with an endometrial scratch to improve implantation conditions, as he believed this may also be the problem. In later cycles, he added more progesterone to hopefully improve things, and we had a chemical pregnancy on our 5th cycle with him. He also added Adderall on the 5th cycle on the chance that it can control "natural killer cells" which sometimes inhibit implantation. He showed us and explained the research for each treatment along the way. Though we still are not pregnant, he is fine tuning things and getting closer to identifying the underlying issues.

They'll really do whatever they can to make the process as easy as possible otherwise.

There are some copays for office visits. They really do what they can to make it as financially easy as possible, including medications and finding the cheapest and best resources available.

Be an advocate for yourself. You won't get time with Dr. Check unless you specifically request it - this many be up to a month at times. And if you only want him to review case, be specific about that...I have low ovarian reserve and was given very high doses of Menopur only for each cycle. We tried other things, but mostly a lot of injectables...I have great respect for the knowledge and interest he still has in this science after so many years. Although we did not conceive, I admire Dr. Check's willingness to spend time with me during scheduled consultations. On one visit he spent 2 hours with me. All in all, he was also confused by my situation and showed a vested interest in that, which gave me comfort in all of the overwhelmingness.
The nursing staff for IVF [at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] was very professional. Quick and not very friendly, but getting the job done. The regular nurses were very pleasant, especially Jackie...I have found that Cooper does a reasonably priced IVF...The clinic seems a little dated and there are some things that can be added to the office that would make it more inviting and organized. The nurses are ok, they are hit or miss. They are human too, we are all entitled to bad days sometimes. It took a while for the nurses to be friendly with me. No one explained the expectations or processes of the office when I first came to the practice. And when I asked for help with injection instructions in the beginning, the nurse seemed annoyed with me. I felt like my husband received better treatment from the staff than I did. However, the IVF nurses and staff were my favorite people! I enjoyed Jessie (Nurse), Melissa (Embryologist) and Bob (Anesthesiologist) the most.

Dr. Check is brilliant. I have great respect for the knowledge and interest he still has in this science after so many years. Although we did not conceive, I admire Dr. Check's willingness to spend time with me during scheduled consultations. On one visit he spent 2 hours with me. All in all, he was also confused by my situation and showed a vested interest in that, which gave me comfort in all of the overwhelmingness.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Be an advocate for yourself. You won't get time with Dr. Check unless you specifically request it - this many be up to a month at times. And if you only want him to review case, be specific about that. Dr. Cohen in the practice is great, she did my first egg retrieval. However, I would not recommend Dr. Choe if you are not up for blunt and fast delivery of instructions and news.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
The facility is factory-like. When I first starting seeing this practice, no one warmly greeted me or walked me through the expectations of the practice. I did not have a designated nurse. It wasn't until I had been going to the practice for years that I started to gain rapport with the nurses.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I have low ovarian reserve and was given very high doses of Menopur only for each cycle. We tried other things, but mostly a lot of injectables.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Jackie, Karen, Phyllis, Jessie)
The nursing staff for IVF was very professional. Quick and not very friendly, but getting the job done. The regular nurses were very pleasant, especially Jackie.
Describe your experience with Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic seems a little dated and there are some things that can be added to the office that would make it more inviting and organized.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
We had health insurance for IVF procedures, however, we needed to pay out of pocket for meds. All in all, I have found that Cooper does a reasonably priced IVF.
Describe Jerome Check's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
I agreed with my Doctor's consultations regarding embryo transfer.

Dr. Check is a unique, eccentric, well-established, knowledgeable, highly recommended man. ..He started me on adderall, bloodwork, post coidal testing and ultrasound monitoring. First month just didnt happen. Second month egg showed not a good cycle thru bloodwork, call when you get your period. 3rd cycle ovulated way too soon (day 4) we still tried to make this cycle work but no go. 4th cycle started on ethanol estradiol for 10 days to suppress FSH, too high at start of cycle, then follistim once released,

Dr. Jerome Check is a very nice guy. He is very understanding. We sat down and talked to Dr. Check for our consultation and he developed a plan for us. It was a good plan. I will say, that was the only time we seen Dr. Check. Everything else like my Endometrial Scratch, Egg Retrieval, and Egg Transfer was done by someone else (Dr.Chang). But even thou it wasn't successful, it was still a great experience.
Strengths [for Cooper Institute]- Dr. Check- His plan that he develops for you. He really cares about his patients. He is very understanding. Also, his IVF price rates are lower then most places. Because of my low/declining AMH and lack of insurance coverage, I was put on on mini-ivf [by Dr. Jerome Check[, so my protocol consisted of lower doses of fertility drugs.... only 5 mature eggs were retrieved of the 14+ measurable follicles I had. After a disappointing egg retrieval, we went forward with a second cycle. Again, due to poor communication, (it took me 3 days of calling the clinic to get someone to call me back) I started the second cycle late and missed out on the first couple of days of stimulation. The second round we had less follicles and retrieved 6 mature eggs. Not successful for a healthy 30 year old.
While I was cycling [at the Cooper Institute] the nurses would call me back the same day of my monitoring to advise of any dosage changes and results. I was unable to communicate with them via email, which I would have preferred. My biggest issue was the lack of communication at the start of my second cycle.... The biggest strength of this clinic is the costs. Weaknesses are absolutely poor communication.
How was your experience with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Jerome Check is a peculiar man but seems to be very knowledgeable about infertility research. He does not nickle and dime his patients which I thoroughly appreciated. It is not easy to follow his train of thought but he does not rush his patients. I do think he cares about his patients but that does not translate to elevated care. The ONLY pros to seeing Dr. Check is 1) Cost and 2) knowledge of research.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
Personally speak to all parties involved in your treatment BEFORE all procedures take place. Do not assume that the communication you expect to take place among your caregivers will happen without your intervention. Being your own advocate is not enough.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jerome Check at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders?
My medical case is very unique but I was treated as a "normal" patient.
Describe the protocols Jerome Check used in your cycles at Cooper Institute for Reproductive Hormonal Disorders and their degree of success.
Because of my low/declining AMH and lack of insurance coverage, I was put on on mini-ivf, so my protocol consisted of lower doses of fertility drugs. Looking back, I am not confident that this was the right approach and if the Dr. had looked deeper into my overall health, I think he would have prescribed a different protocol. If Dr. Cho had been informed about my special case and adequately performed the egg retrieval, I would have been satisfied with the results, but due to lack of communication, only 5 mature eggs were retrieved of the 14+ measurable follicles I had. After a disappointing egg retrieval, we went forward with a second cycle. Again, due to poor communication, (it took me 3 days of calling the clinic to get someone to call me back) I started the second cycle late and missed out on the first couple of days of stimulation. Dr. Check did not inform Dr. Cho of my unique medical history which resulted in an unsuccessful cycle.

I never doubted he was absolutely brilliant and a leader in his field. He is funny, and as someone who needs a little humor I appreciated it. He seems to care immensely about the financial aspect of infertility. But you don't often get to see him. I only saw Dr Check once during the initial consultation. he does a post coital test. From what I have heard not many doctors do this. By doing this simple test they discovered my cervical mucus was killing all of the sperm. The fix was an easy douche of water and baking soda once a month. Everyone though this was insane but it worked. I was prescribed medication for the hyperthyroidism. Each cycle was close monitoring to watch for ovulation, followed by progesterone (he seems very keen on progesterone) and a Lupron shot one week after ovulation.
There were 2 main nurses. [at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] I found that once I got to know them a bit they were awesome. I sometimes felt like I had to slow them down to ask questions but they were always happy to answer. They were the best. Seriously made the whole thing easier and once they got to know me I felt like they were cheering me on. Same for the pregnancy nurse Becky.

Get to know everyone else in the office. You will deal with them, not Dr Check as much.

I only saw Dr Check once during the initial consultation. After that you are shuffled along the process. It got better once I got to know the nurses and techs and unserstood the process better. You sort of have to trust that he is overseeing everything and will take you to the next step as needed.

I was incredibly lucky. My insurance wad amazing. That being said, during my first appointment I received a large chart of the cost for everything and it seemed to be far more reasonable than I have heard of others paying. I also saw a lot of messaging about them trying to make treatments as reasonable as possible for patients.
What specific things went wrong at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
  • Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Cooper Institute for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
When I had my miscarriage I had to decide between a D&c and to use med to pass it myself. It was an incredibly emotional and horrifying time for me. I first spoke with Dr Check and was set on the surgery. But then I consulted with an OB (in Dr Check's own office) and I felt incredibly pushed to passing it at home. He scared me about the chance of scarring and not ever being able to have children. I asked him what the chances were of that and I will never forget his answer: "well 100% if it happens to you" I was terrified and decided against the surgery. It wasn't until Dr Check called me back later that evening and graciously spoke to me for awhile that I better understood the pluses and minuses of both and switched back to the surgery. I'm so happy I did. I was upset by the confusing and contradictory messaging during an awful time.

Since I was advanced maternal age, Dr. Check told me on my first visit that I should choose donor egg for my cycles. I was already doing donor sperm, and if my objective was to have a child, donor egg would give me the best shot. I used injectable Gonal F, Estrogen suppositories and tablets, injections of progesterone...Dr. Check was blunt and honest, which is exactly what I wanted. He told me exactly what to expect and how to proceed if I chose to move forward. He discussed the probability of conceiving and the procedure for fertilization and meds to help me conceive. After the initial visit, I did not see him again.
Dr. Check's egg donation supervisor (Fran) was fabulous. She was very concerned about things going forward and we became familiar with each other. She knew the personal struggles I was having and tried to make the process as easy as possible. She left the clinic shortly after I delivered...The clinic was well organized and made the procedure easy. They recommended a local hotel to stay in after the procedure which provided transportation. The distance to travel was far for someone traveling alone.

He [Dr. Check] treated me like an individual. Felt like my treatment was created for only me. Didn’t feel like it was an infertility factory where every case is treated the same.... He cared for my health not just infertility. He is kind, smart and takes costs into consideration which is a big factor when you seek infertility care with no infertility insurance. His costs were the lowest, but his knowledge is better then the higher prices, fancy fertility clinics.
Strengths [ of Cooper Institute for Advanced Repro Med]: more affordable, knowledgeable doctor, thinking outside the box treatments, published many papers. Cons: can be waiting for doctor for 2-3 hours. Sometimes receptionists are not in a good mood. Talk about personal information in front of waiting room... Always called back the same day and answered all questions. Asked doctor questions if she didn’t have the answer. She always called back the same day with answer.

I didn’t have any reactions to ivf meds. Gonal-f, menopour, Ganerelix, Norvel, progesterone in oil, progesterone, suppositories, Estrace. The progesterone in oil shots hurt. Need to use a large needle. Nurses marked where I needed to inject shot. Overall it wasn’t bad and if I had the funds I would do it again.

Dr. Check’s work ethic and personality made him a great fit for us. We needed to smile, but also needed direction with a plan. The staff there are world class, and adore Dr, Check was well. I recommend him to anyone willing to listen!...Letrozole prior to IUI for 5 days ( I think to speed up follicle growth as my cycles were very long)... One week after iui, Lupron shot for help with implantation. Throughout, continuous monitoring with blood work and ultrasounds. One week after iui, lining check.
