How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne was always very personable and professional with us. Although we did not see him often, our interactions with him were a comfort to us. He took time to speak with us, answer all our questions, and make sure we were feeling ok. Because of this and because we had success with his protocol, we decided to use PREG for our second IVF transfer despite living many states away.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Utilize the nurses on his staff whenever you need clarification or have a question. Understand that you may not always see your doctor, but he is indeed reviewing all the tests, etc. behind the scenes.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne was very personable although we did not see him often. Members of the PREG staff ranged from extremely personable and comforting to robotic and not very inviting. It was unfortunate that we worked with a nurse who was more "business as usual" than a comforting presence when we were undergoing the egg retrieval as it was our first time ever doing fertility treatment. Additionally, I truly felt like a number on transfer day because we were in a room with 2 other couples (our identities were hidden by hospital sheets, but it was obvious other people were in the room). I wish we had been prepared for that scenario the first time around and I found it disappointing that we were not given a heads up that we would not be in the waiting area alone.
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We used the antagonist protocol for our IVF treatment due to the reasoning behind our need for IVF. I believe the protocol provided was pretty standard. PREG "rated" my chance of a successful pregnancy about 95%. We did not have many modifications to the treatment as I responded very well to the medication. In the end, we underwent 1 egg retrieval which produced 4 health embryos and 2 FET's that resulted in 2 pregnancies.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Lynne Parks, Kristina Housworth, Meagan Vanzant)
Over the course of our IVF treatment, we primarily interacted with 4 nurses. The first nurse we ever met with was not very compassionate, but she was available to answer any questions I had and review the protocol with me as it was my first time ever having fertility treatment. The other three nurses were all very kind and compassionate and I felt more at ease with them. All the nurses were extremely organized and responded in a timely manner. Overall communication was good, although I did notice they did not communicate with us nearly as often our second time around.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
We had a great experience with PREG, although it is biased based on the fact that we had two successful pregnancies (1 live birth, 1 pregnancy still current) with the clinic. PREG knows what they are doing when it comes to fertility treatment, but that can also make it seem like they are cold since they do this so often. Communication was adequate enough to understand the protocol and what was going on, but there were a few items I wish they would have made note with us our first time around (notably the fact that we'd be in a room with other couples waiting for their transfer). The nurses are great and we loved our doctor. We would recommend and will return to expand our family.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Although PREG does take insurance, our insurance did not cover any cost for our treatment. The Financial department did provide loan information. The total cost for our egg retrieval and transfer was ~$16,000 including genetic testing. For the second FET transfer, our cost was ~$4,500. This does not include medication.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Dr. Payne recommended eSET and we preferred not to do a multiple transfer. We did not ask many questions on this recommendation as we agreed.
What specific things went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
My first transfer/pregnancy resulted in a major hives outbreak about 4 weeks after the transfer. This was due to my estrogen levels being too high due to the medication. I still went on to have a successful pregnancy that was unaffected by this. We did not continue to see the clinic after my confirmed pregnancy test because we do not live in the area and as a result, I think they may have assumed we were getting treatment with other doctors so they did not touch base with us to let us know when to stop or taper down medication.
[Dr. John Payne] knew how long we had been trying to conceive on our own, my prior history with endometriosis, cervical cancer, and he was very delicate with all of the facts and options for us...created a plan for us to move into the IVF process. In the end our retrieval, genetic testing, and transfer were successful. However, at 13 weeks we found out our baby had a rare birth defect that occurs 1 in 5,000-7,000 and was not a result of genetics. When we reached out to the clinic, he handled our conversation with the utmost compassion. We felt his sadness for us. Dr. Payne asked how we were doing and discussed counseling options for us. He went above and beyond in all aspects.
Strengths would be great communication, compassionate, trustworthy. Weaknesses would be flexibility with appointments. At times, it was hard as their availability did not always work with my schedule only due to the doctors rotating offices [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group]...[nurse] always available either by phone or email to answer my questions the same day. She understood our anxieties and was very compassionate when scenarios worried us. She would always offer to bring me in and to check on the situation.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
We spent several years with Dr. Payne. In the beginning, he discussed my history of endometriosis and my options. He was very knowledgable with my diagnosis and the appropriate approaches to take. We decided to start off slow and try timed intercourse. Eventually, I had another laparoscopy surgery to remove scar tissue from my endometriosis with their Director of Surgery, Dr. McCoy. He and Dr. McCoy worked wonderfully together and the process was seamless. They told me to allow a year after my procedure to try naturally since we were not ready for IVF yet mentally or financially. Each visit he was very attentive to our questions and concerns and we felt like we were receiving honest facts based on our specific situation. As our year approached, he created a plan for us to move into the IVF process. In the end our retrieval, genetic testing, and transfer were successful. However, at 13 weeks we found out our baby had a rare birth defect that occurs 1 in 5,000-7,000 and was not a result of genetics. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
If a patient has been out of the clinic for a longer time period to review their complete medical history before the consult as it can be difficult for the patient discuss certain matters at times.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne took his time to explain to us our procedures and what would benefit us most. He listened to us and did not push treatment on us. He knew how long we had been trying to conceive on our own, my prior history with endometriosis, cervical cancer, and he was very delicate with all of the facts and options for us. We did not feel like dollar signs. We were able to try the treatments that we felt comfortable with and financially ready for.
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
For my retrieval we did 11 days of stims used Gonal- F and Low dose HCG. I also took Keflex 500mg and Aspirin 81 mg daily. Provera was taken day 6-11. I used a Lupron trigger shot and a dose of Novarel 2 nights before my retrieval. The morning before my retrieval, I did one more Lupron injection and resumed pills. The day of my retrieval, Dr. Payne was able to retrieve 10 eggs, 9 were mature enough to fertilize, 8 fertilized, and 6 grew to blastocyst. All of our blastocysts were genetically normal after doing PGT-A testing. We began preparing for our transfer two months later, which consisted of a 24 day protocol. My medications consisted of Estradiol, Femera 2.5 mg, and Aspirin 81 mg daily. I began taking Progesterone in oil 100cc on day 18, in the evening. On day 19, Medrol 16 mg was added in the pm as well. On the day of the transfer, I took Valium 5 mg and Feldene 10 mg 1 hour before my transfer. Our first and highest graded embryo did not make it through the thawing process the day of which only occurs around 5 percent of the time. We moved to our next highest graded embryo and the transfer was a success. We were pregnant with a sweet baby boy.

Describe the costs associated with your care under John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I believe I paid $7,684 for my retrieval, transfer, and biopsy of my embryos for genetic testing. This was what insurance did not cover.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Our doctor strongly suggested transferring one embryo due to the grade and quality of our embryos being high as well as my cervical incompetence.
I remember he called me personally while he was on vacation to discuss using HGH on our second round of IVF (with my own eggs)...He takes the time to show up for every single appointment I have, which I love. He always makes me feel like I am the only patient he has at the practice...Dr. Payne allowed us to do a fresh transfer with the two embryos we had from our second round of IVF...After our two failed rounds of IVF with my own eggs, he never pushed me to donor eggs, which made me feel so good
[the PREG nurse] always replies to all my emails the rapid time and always with the kindest words...a package IVF cycle, which included two retrievals, and one FET, and that cost us roughly $18,000. But we spent another $10,000 on meds...The only weakness I would give PREG is there billing department. They have made a few mistakes with insurance, since I don’t have any fertility coverage. But when mistakes are made they are always addressed quickly.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne calls me his “special patient”, mainly due to the fact that I always seem to have bad luck. And I truly am special, but because of that we have a very close connection. He always asks me how my day is, and talks about sports with my husband, when he comes for ultrasounds. He takes the time to show up for every single appointment I have, which I love. He always makes me feel like I am the only patient he has at the practice.
After our two failed rounds of IVF with my own eggs, he never pushed me to donor eggs, which made me feel so good. My husband and I came to the decision to use donor eggs on our own. And when we choose the donor, Dr. Payne was so supportive.
I remember asking for an ERA before we did a DEFET and he suggested he not and the transfer failed. He immediately felt remorse and even offered a free ERA and DEFET, to make up for the mistake. It was so nice knowing he not only had our back medically, but financially as a well. And after our donor egg transfer failed to produce a live birth, he has graciously offered a discount for another round of donor egg. He has helped us so much and made us feel good moving forward.
The other part I love about Dr. Payne is his compassion. When we lost our identical twins due to my appendicitis bursting, he just felt awful. You could tell he was just as upset as we were.
I am so excited to continue working with him and have never even thought twice about switching to a new doctor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I would tell any patient seeing Dr. Payne that he is caring, but always push the extra testing. I would also say that he always has your best interest at heart and truly wants the best for you, and you are not just a number.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. John Payne is the most incredible human being and doctor I have ever met in my life! He truly cares about his patients and is always completely invested in there story. I remember he called me personally while he was on vacation to discuss using HGH on our second round of IVF (with my own eggs). And it was so nice to see how much he cares.
But what makes Dr. Payne the best doctor is he just cares so much. I became pregnant after our second transfer with our donor egg cycle and had horrible abdominal pain, and I thought I was having an ectopic pregnancy and rushed to the clinic for a ultrasound. It was reviled I had identical twins and he suspected I had appendicitis. He was so calm and collected but walked my husband on what to do and to take me to the ER right away. He and his entire team were so concerned about me and he even had his nurse check in on me through a contact she had at the hospital.
And when I lost the twins due to the infection of my appendicitis, he was heart broken for my husband and I. He had so much sympathy and compassion for our horrible loss and the way we were treat at Prisma Health.
Dr. Payne also listens to everything I have to say and answers any question. I am very type-a and a researcher, and he knows that. He doesn’t dumb things down for me we always brainstorm new ideas and new methods for the next round.
He knows I will get pregnant and is committed to helping grow our family. There need to be more Dr. Payne in this world and I appreciate everything he and his practice have done for me and will continue to do for me.
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
For our first IVF cycle, he did a micro-dose lupron protocol, and after it yielded 2 abnormal embryos I wanted to change things up, and Dr. Payne was totally on board! I had ask to do a natural start cycle with HGH and he reviewed it with the entire practice and decided to move forward with that. We changed up the protocol and even though it didn’t yield a positive pregnancy, I felt like it was a better cycle outcome.
Once the two IVF cycles failed we moved onto donor eggs. He did a fresh cycle donor egg and I had asked an ERA and he didn’t think we needed it and after that cycle failed, he was complete on board with it and even suggested the full bout of testing.
And after the third DEFET failed, I had asked for an interlipid infusion treatment and he agreed with this strategy. And although it didn’t work it was nice to have the support of my doctor to always be changing protocols, when things don’t work.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Lindsay Polowczuk)
Lindsay is not only my care coordinator but most the times my nurse for ultrasounds. She is truly an angel sent from God himself! She always replies to all my emails the rapid time and always with the kindest words. When we have ultrasounds, she and Dr. Payne are always welcoming with a smile and a bubbly personality.
On the day I came in so much pain, to find out I was pregnant with identical twins and suspected appendicitis, they cared for me greatly! They allowed me to lay down on the bed and wheeled me out in a wheelchair. One of the nurses Kristina even reached out to her dad, who was a doctor at the hospital we went to make sure I was ok. The entire staff where so concerned for me health and the babies health. I even had Lindsay email me and checked in on me after my surgery, and emailed me personally when I lost the twins to say how sorry she was for our loss.
The staff at PREG is truly amazing and they work so well with the doctors and patients, and make everything run so well.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
PREG is a clinic who truly cares about there patients. They always answers he phone and emails in rapid response and always have a great attitude. The doctors and nurses are very efficient and I never feel like I have to wait in the waiting room for long periods of time. It is always welcoming and inviting space.
The only weakness I would give PREG is there billing department. They have made a few mistakes with insurance, since I don’t have any fertility coverage. But when mistakes are made they are always addressed quickly.
There aren’t really any negative things I can say about my clinic, and I would suggest anyone going to PREG over the other clinic (Fertility Centers of Carolina). I love that PREG is independent from PRISMA Health, and I feel like I am a human and given unique attention, which is something PRIMSA always lacks in.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
IUI’s were about $1,000 including meds. The clinic charged roughly $800.
I did a package IVF cycle, which included two retrievals, and one FET, and that cost us roughly $18,000. But we spent another $10,000 on meds, so it was close to $30,000 for the two rounds of IVF.
When we did the donor egg package, we paid $20,000, and another $5,000 for meds, FET’s, infusions, D&C, etc.
Our next round of donor eggs will be about $20,400.
Between the surgeries, therapy, and fertility treatments I have done thus far, my husband and I will be close to spending $100,000 on treatment.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Dr. Payne allowed us to do a fresh transfer with the two embryos we had from our second round of IVF, but really wanted us to do a single embryo transfer with the donor egg cycles.
This last FET, he did allow us to transfer the last two embryos from the donor egg, because the grades weren’t as good.
[Dr.] John Payne was very direct about what to expect and what are chances were. He was also warm and understanding. We had a very smooth time with both egg retrieval and FET due to the fact that he was there walking us through basically holding our hand...did 3 clomid cycles with IUI...All 3 cycles failed...Then we tried IVF...did one egg retrieval and then one FET and that worked on the first time
The clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] was very warm and friendly...ALL very friendly and compassionate. They remember you each time you come in like your a friend not just a number...Very organized and on schedule. Not much wait time. Willing to take calls 24/7 about anything. Break down of cost and billing very detailed. They have a coordinator that will explain everything and anything in great detail

We did 3 clomid cycles with IUI and that was due to me having pcos as that was are first steps at conceiving. I went for ultrasounds almost every other day to keep checking eggs and then timed just right to do iui. All 3 cycles failed. Then we tried IVF because that was our next step since he explained after 3 tries that’s all my insurance would cover and the states say after three the chances of if working keep going down. We did one egg retrieval and then one FET and that worked on the first time

Insurance covered Clomid and IUI when doing IVF had to pay $35,000 up front for egg retrieval and FET insurance covered most medicine so only paid a $150 each transfer cost $3,000 after the first genetic testing of embryos cost $2,500 keeping embryos froze cost $500 every year
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
At first I was upset thinking that would lessen our chance of conceiving, but after explaining just how hard it can be to carry multiples and how the genetic testing increase chances I felt better
Dr. Payne understands that there is no black and white handbook when it comes to infertility care. He thoroughly explains the issues that are known, he explains his recommendations, and he gives you adequate time to make decisions without pressure...I am technically diagnosed with unexplained infertility. However, I have failed 2 out of 3 HSGs, so we are assuming my tubes are an issue as well... So instead of wasting efforts and resources on IUIs, we went straight for IVF
[our PREG nurse] was the most gentle nurse I've dealt with. She called to check on me each time after our chemical pregnancies, and I know she was just as heartbroken as we were...I will say the billing department is somewhat lacking. We've had several issues with billing to insurance when it is cheaper to pay out of pocket... but no one communicated that until it was already billed..
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne understands that there is no black and white handbook when it comes to infertility care. He thoroughly explains the issues that are known, he explains his recommendations, and he gives you adequate time to make decisions without pressure. It's easy to assume that when you go to a fertility specialist, they will be able to diagnose you during your first appointment, and "fix" you by the second. However, it is more of a journey than a one stop shop, and while it is a difficult journey for most of us, Dr. Payne is there with you every step of the way... answering questions and looking ahead to the next step of the journey.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Just trust the professional. He's been in his line of work for years, and he is willing to work with you and try new things to reach your pregnancy goals.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne is thorough in his explanations. He doesn't try to make you feel stupid or rushed. He knows this is probably one of the hardest battles you will ever go through, so he listens and adapts his treatment options to the individual couples' needs.
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
I am technically diagnosed with unexplained infertility. However, I have failed 2 out of 3 HSGs, so we are assuming my tubes are an issue as well... So instead of wasting efforts and resources on IUIs, we went straight for IVF. Before coming to PREG, I was on an insane amount of Clomid Cycles (25ish)? Dr. Payne did away with that, proceeded with the IVF protocol. 1 Egg retrieval resulted in 5 embryos to blast. For our two transfers, we did Estrodiol and Progesterone. Sadly, the two transfers resulted in two chemical pregnancies and a great deal of heartbreak. However, we are getting ready for a myomectomy and a mock transfer to test the uterine lining.

The healthcare side is second to none. They bring it everyday, and work together brilliantly to achieve baby goals. I will say the billing department is somewhat lacking. We've had several issues with billing to insurance when it is cheaper to pay out of pocket... but no one communicated that until it was already billed. I think if billing communicated a little bit better, it would make the clinic five stars.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I believe the HSG was $600ish. The IVF egg retrieval and first transfer was $12,000ish. And the following transfers were $3500ish. Labs are extra, initial ultrasound was extra, and semen analysis was extra, but I'm pretty sure all of those fell under the $500 mark, individually.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Dr. Payne called me after hours to explain the results from my testing of the 1 embryo that we had...He was very personal with me and very straight forward which is what my husband and [I] would like in a doctor...My first round of IVF I started with a lower dosage I think it was like 250 injections; they realized that this wasn't working with my body and mid cycle we increased the dosage but realized it was too late..Unfortunately my body just isn't responding and the decision moving towards donor egg to start a family was the right thing to do. He said you have nothing to feel bad about! That statement there brighten my day and I have felt good about our decision every since
[my PREG nurse coordinator was] Very professional never wanted to give my hopes up and was optimistic...When I was transferred over from Spartanburg to Greenville it did take the finance person a while to contact me and I don't like the billing it doesn't give you a good break down of the services surrendered that would be my main complaint and the app doesn't provide much information either...Under Dr. Payne $18k total with Preg over $20k

Be prepared to hear the truth!!

I will never forget Dr. Payne called me after hours to explain the results from my testing of the 1 embryo that we had. He was so kind and it was not easy considering that I received the results the night before with no one to discuss it with. Although we expected it I always told myself it would only take one! Dr. Payne told me he wanted me to know one thing that none of this is my fault I have done everything I possibly could and allowed science to help. Unfortunately my body just isn't responding and the decision moving towards donor egg to start a family was the right thing to do. He said you have nothing to feel bad about! That statement there brighten my day and I have felt good about our decision every since! I was so happy that he took time out of his busy schedule to personally call me after hours! Now we are patiently waiting on our next steps as we have chosen our Egg Donor! I am thankful for Dr. Payne and still remaining hopeful that I will take that photo that I see everyone take "the graduation" photo! Dr. Payne also stated at my first visit with him its you, science and the rest is up to "God"!! Thank you Dr. Payne /Thank you Preg!

My first round of IVF I started with a lower dosage I think it was like 250 injections; they realized that this wasn't working with my body and mid cycle we increased the dosage but realized it was too late. We stopped the treatment and was given and option to move towards a round of IU because everything looked good. He left it up to us and we didn't see any reason why not, the day after Thanksgiving my cycle came and that's when we of course realized it hadn't worked. We then made an appointment with Dr. Payne before the holidays to discuss his concerns. He explained that we could do another round but according to my numbers my ovarian reserve was decreasing and he was concerned that it may not work. We decided we wanted to give it our all bc we knew next steps was DE which Dr. Payne went over all the details with that as well. We took a break and started back in January and body was slowly responding but responding. We stared with a higher dosage I think 400-450 this time. We made it to egg retrieval thought we would retrieve more but retrieved less and they did some scrapping around my lining for future implantation. Retrieved 7 two made it and then one made it to testing and he was abnormal. Here we are today and have found our ED and we are waiting on someone else to find her since we went with a smaller package!

My nurse coordinator was nice. I think when we first started with her I didn't feel like she was caring but I think that was her personality but as I had more appointments I could see the compassion in her. Very professional never wanted to give my hopes up and was optimistic. But the Spartanburg team overall was very nice!

The billing coordinator in Columbia was horrible with returning calls or providing you with billing info. I saw complaints on line and it hadn't happen to me but then it did. When I was transferred over from Spartanburg to Greenville it did take the finance person a while to contact me and I don't like the billing it doesn't give you a good break down of the services surrendered that would be my main complaint and the app doesn't provide much information either.
When I first met with Dr. Payne he made me feel heard. However, I thought he would be more involved in the ER process doing scans, reviewing labs, responding to message in the portal etc. Nearly all of that done was by nurses...No one explained my protocol or the reasoning behind it with either retrieval. I asked directly and got answers, but nothing was volunteered.
[PREG] Billing is SKETCHY. There are several things on the 'financial agreement' that aren't submitted to insurance...Recently I feel like they have overbooked themselves and are understaffed. If you need someone after hours or on the weekends godspeed getting in touch with anyone...No one explained my protocol or the reasoning behind it with either retrieval. I asked directly and got answers, but nothing was volunteered.

Communicate more

The nurses are quick to respond to emails/messages and return phone calls. During my two egg retrievals Dr Payne only did one of the five scans. My second egg retrieval was done by another doctor and that was never communicated it, I learned before hand when it was noted in my chart. Which is fine, but it would have been nice to know prior. After my first egg retrieval(19 eggs retrieved, 13 mature, 11 embryos but only 2 made it to day 5 and 1 genetically normal) I scheduled a consultation to try and figure out why my numbers were so much lower than anticipated and didn't get a real answer. Constantly felt like I had to advocate for myself.

So you pay on average $1300 out of pocket for it for an egg retrieval. After talking to insurance they said they do cover it. They also charge a cycle management fee(varies on prices but $300-500). Double check what you are paying for, check with insurance with what is covered and ask lots of questions. I feel like they double dip and get away with it, but it is hard to prove.
They are also only open mon-thurs 7:30-4:30 and fri 7:30-12:30. They make you fit into their schedule. Recently I feel like they have overbooked themselves and are understaffed. If you need someone after hours or on the weekends godspeed getting in touch with anyone.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
IVF was about $13k not including meds.
They have a lot of things that aren't billed through insurance. Anesthesia, cycle management, etc. They might be a better clinic if you dont have any insurance coverage, but they won't file a lot of things through insurance. Other clinics in the area are certainly cheaper.
What specific things went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I have had two instances when meds weren't called in. I realized two days before I needed to take my trigger shot they never called it in.
They also didn't call in meds to my insurance for prior authorization.
I felt like I constantly have to stay on them asking questions etc.
Dr Payne was a excellent dr. He explained everything the first dr appointment. Then after testing finding out we were going to do ivf he told us everything to expect...Our first transfer we just transferred one embryo and ended up with a chemical pregnancy. The second time we transferred two embryos...In my protocol our only option was ivf because my husband had such low sperm count. First thing was getting all of our meds started for egg retrieval. I was on birth control for a bit. Then went in for a baseline ultra sound. Did my injections everyday. Went for egg retrieval, then a couple months later we did a frozen embryo transfer.
They will start your treatment with the cheapest option and explain all of the financial aspect to you...I would go in for every appointment and look forwarded to talking to her. [our PREG nurse] did a fantastic job explaining everything to me and my husband. She would always be smiling...I paid 12,500 for ivf. 5,000 for meds...

Preg has a place in my heart. With out them I would have never had my babies. They mean the world to us. This clinic and the people there feel like family to us. If anyone is having fertility issues go here. They will start your treatment with the cheapest option and explain all of the financial aspect to you.

I paid 12,500 for ivf. 5,000 for meds.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I agree with eSET. Our first transfer we just transferred one embryo and ended up with a chemical pregnancy. The second time we transferred two embryos and have two beautiful baby girls now.
[The first IVF cycle with Dr. Payne] 15 eggs were retrieved, 12 fertilized and on day 3 the lab called to say all embryos had arrested. Second time around 13 eggs were retrieved, 10 fertilized....the lab came to tell us that we had 1 bad quality morula. [Dr. John Payne] said we should just transfer. As I am trying to process this info they did transfer. I wish they would had called ahead of time and told me the outcome. I should have had time to decide whether or not to transfer.
They [Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] did not communicate how the embryos progressed or even gave me the opportunity to think whether or not we wanted to transfer a low quality morula...They lack compassion and good manners. They are not good at communicating or giving you updates which I think is so important as you go through this process. There is never someone on call over the weekends and all their retrievals are scheduled twice a week when they should be working with each person to determine which is the right day...
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I did IVF twice. The first time 15 eggs were retrieved, 12 fertilized and on day 3 the lab called to say all embryos had arrested. Second time around 13 eggs were retrieved, 10 fertilized. On day 4 I called to try to get an update and the nurse said “no news is good news. Unless you hear otherwise come tomorrow for transfer”. The next day we go in and nobody would say anything to us. They took us to the OR, I got undressed and then the lab came to tell us that we had 1 bad quality morula. The doctor said we should just transfer. As I am trying to process this info they did transfer. I wish they would had called ahead of time and told me the outcome. I should have had time to decide whether or not to transfer.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I would recommend they look for another clinic.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I felt like they were just running a business and were trying to collect money rather than caring how I felt throughout an emotional process.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
The nurses approach is “if we don’t call you it means every is ok with your results”. I think that either way it should be communicated and it would take them 2 minutes to call or send an email. It is nerve racking to wait all day wondering if they will call with bad news
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
No strengths. They lack compassion and good manners. They are not good at communicating or giving you updates which I think is so important as you go through this process. Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
They did not communicate how the embryos progressed or even gave me the opportunity to think whether or not we wanted to transfer a low quality morula. After my first retrieval nobody told me about side effects and I had to figure it out by myself
John Payne gave me a realistic assessment of my chances, and the space I need to weigh things out for myself, and although I have not yet attained the outcome I have hoped for, I have never felt anything but well cared for in his company...We tracked fertility cycles, Timed IUI treatments, and generally hoped for the best. Eventually we added Clomid to that routine..
The doctors [at PREG] are great, but the nurses are better still. They are funny, and communicative, and are wonderful about asking consent before touching or starting procedures...I honestly didn’t encounter any notable weakness is here… And the nursing staff and Dr. Payne are knowledgeable compassionate people. I suppose one of the thing of note is that the clinic is directly across from a lovely little field of wildflowers. I suspect that’s intentional. They were a wonderful comfort to me before and after all of my spring and summer treatments, and well into the fall.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I came in likely already too old to successfully carry a pregnancy. John Payne gave me a realistic assessment of my chances, and the space I need to weigh things out for myself, and although I have not yet attained the outcome I have hoped for, I have never felt anything but well cared for in his company. It should probably be noted that I am significantly overweight: his compassion and lack of judgment I’ve been very striking, and I very much appreciate both.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
It’s useful for him to know how you like being communicated with. When we first began he was quite, quite gentle until I specifically asked him to be as blunt as possible. Once I had, our conversation shifted pretty readily into something far more useful to me. I was impressed he was able to switch tactics so thoroughly, to meet me where I was Most comfortable.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
He picked it up on my educational level, and treated me as Something of a peer. He was very observant of my demeanor, facial expressions, and remember details of past visits. When I told him I prefer my news given bluntly, he was willing and able to meet me there.
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We tracked fertility cycles, Timed IUI treatments, and generally hoped for the best. Eventually we added Clomid to that routine. It didn’t work, which, while heartbreaking, makes complete sense because it was statistically unlikely in the first place. I was given other options, but was generally unable to afford them. Dr. Payne and his staff were incredibly compassionate and understanding about the role finances Had to play in my decision making, and we’re far better than I would’ve hoped in keeping me on track.

Describe the costs associated with your care under John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I honestly have no idea: purchasing sperm and the clinics various treatments generally cost about $3000 a cycle Out of pocket, but I believe most of the cost was billed to insurance.
Dr Payne is extremely intelligent in the world of 3rd party reproduction. There are a lot of technical terms that are used when explaining options and Dr Payne was great at explaining in detail each one. He truly wants to see the patient have become parents and have a successful pregnancy....First step was to try times intercourse with fertility drugs. After a few rounds of that not working he recommended IUI. After a few rounds of that not working he recommended IVF. He said we could always keep trying but with the uncertainty of not knowing exactly what was happening he said it may or may not happen.
The costs for IUI [at PREG] weren't too expensive. IVF was very expensive even with insurance because most of the procedure was not covered by insurance. Medications cost the most.... easy to get to, clean and well organized. Sometimes meeting the doctor can take a long time, but the nurses are usually prompt. The visits are usually quick. The phlebotomist is fabulous! I have always felt comfortable going to PREG.

Dr Payne is a problem solver. infertility is a problem am that is what you want someone that is going to solve my problem. He always has a next plan of action however he doesn't push you into the next step. He wants the couple to be completely in sync when moving on to the next step.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
To go in with a list of all of the questions you may have and if he goes through something quickly ask him to back up and explain. He will do it. He has been doing this for so many years he can speak quickly and if you are new to infertility and 3rd party reproductive then you want him to explain things to you. He doesn't mind doing that.

Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
With my age he recommended single embryo transfer especially because we have genetic testing completed.
Dr. Payne is clearly very knowledgeable and takes as much time as needed to answer questions to ensure you have an u understanding or next steps in the treatment plan. He shows a great deal of empathy to his patients and helps calm nerves and fears with his demeanor.... For IVF cycle 1 we were considered unexplained infertility and began IVF with a period of ovarian suppression followed by hcg and gonal-f injections. The gonal- f injections were I creased to 450 units a day almost immediately. Egg retrieval resulted in 7 eggs but 4 were mature. Of the 4 mature, all fertilized but only 1 developed into a day 5 embryo.
The doctors [at PREG] are wonderful! The practices seem to be up to par with others I have researched. The finance department has been helpful. My only complaint has been the front desk and IVF coordinators. They just seem to treat patients like a number and lack some of the compassion I would expect to see in a clinic who is working with people at a time in life that is very difficult and emotional.... The nurses I worked with during the IUI process were all wonderful! Once moving to IVF and working with the IVF coordinator it was different.

Dr. Payne himself has a wonderful bedside manner and is calm and always reassuring during what has been a stressful and highly emotional period of time. However, the IVF coordinator and front desk associates do not display the same attitude towards patients in my opinion. I was just "work" to them and did not feel they shared the same empathy that Dr. Payne displays.

At the follow up, he prescribed 2 months of diminished ovarian reserve supplements a d said IVF cycle 2 would not include ovarian suppression and a lupron shot would be added to my protocol. Currently waiting to start IVF cycle 2.

I had some insurance coverage but still had to pay out of pocket approximately $15,000 for my first round of IVF which failed. I was not given any type or refund si ce I had insurance and will pay the same for our upcoming round of IVF.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Generally, the practice is single embryo transfer. The policy makes sense to me and I have had no reason to question it.
Aggressive microdose flare protocol [with Dr. John Payne] - same protocol that was used during our successful cycle in 2017...good about taking into account individual cases and needs...went out of his way to make sure he was the doctor who did our transfer, although his schedule was busy that day and he could have let another doctor at the practice perform it. He also took a lot of time to meet with us prior to starting the cycle to make sure we understood all our options and that he answered all of our questions.
The clinic [PREG] does prefer eSET but in our case they recommended transferring two embryos. They are good about taking into account individual cases and needs...As a returning patient, I felt much more comfortable and knew what to expect. I also felt like wait times were significantly reduced, although that could be because my appointment times were different this time. I do think PREG has a ton of patients, so as a new patient, that could be overwhelming.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne is a great doctor and I would recommend him. He takes time with each patient to make sure that all questions are answered and that each patient understands the treatment plan. If he has any fault, it's that he sometimes is behind schedule because he takes too much time with patients.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Have all your questions ready, and take notes - he does talk fast, but he gives thorough information and is not afraid to address questions.

Lindsay is the IVF coordinator at PREG and she is wonderful. No complaints. I did have one nurse that I felt uncomfortable with on our egg retrieval day, but I don't remember her name. I felt that she did not have a good bedside manner and wasn't willing to address our questions when presented with some disappointing and potentially confusing information. I felt like she talked down to me. I haven't experienced this from other staff members at PREG.

Make sure he's paying attention to your history...I don’t feel Dr Payne has been prepared when speaking with my wife and I. The meetings seem rushed and he doesn’t always seem to know our history (like he didn’t read the chart before talking to us). We mostly work with his nurse, but when we talk to Dr Payne it feels like we can be just a number...His speech is so fast like he’s reciting the same thing (which I get he is), but it’s the first time we are hearing it so he needs to slow down. He also needs to review charts before calling. There have been a couple times he’s called and we’ve had to pay for a phone consult and he didn’t have my wife’s medications correctly. They were correct in the chart, but he was saying from assumptions and not checking before he spoke. This is too time consuming and expensive for all that.
Kristina, Megan and Jackie [nurses at PREG] are all amazing. I’ve only stayed as long with Dr Payne because of them...Too long to change meds when My wife had a drug intolerance... $500 IUI...$190 for intrauterine scan...$105 progesterone bloodwork...$600 HSG...The clinic itself is good. Front desk staff has been fine. Sometimes they don’t answer the phones until thirty min after they’ve opened. That’s the only drawback I’ve noticed. And you have to pay attention to what office picks up the phone because if the one you originally called doesn’t answer, then you can be routed to another.

My experience with Dr Payne was awesome. He was great. He never gave up on me wanting to have a baby. When the IVF's failed he was there with a positive attitude and great advice. It was an emotional time for me but listening to him and understanding that he was going help me have a baby. He would apologize when the IVF's failed but he said we will not give up. He would tell me what he thought happened but will always say that is in his opinion.
I only had one issue [at PREG] and that was with billing. Overall the clinic is great. I can always call and receive help and answers. I can always get a fast appointment when needed. They call and check in with their patients. They are a very special group of people.... The costs are high and continues to increase. You do receive discounts which helps out a lot....The doctor gave me the option on how many embryo's to transfer within reason of course.

They keep the lines of communication open. You kind of feel like family with them.

We are getting ready to start our first round of ivf with icsi. We have male factor infertility results from cancer treatment. ... We first met dr. Payne over a year ago and absolutely felt like ‘just a number’ in his practice. He seemed overly sure of himself and that he wasn’t interested in our particular situation. ... we decided to give it another shot and have had an entirely different experience with him. He seems more caring and has slowed down to explain everything I have a question about. Overall his demeanor and knowledge makes us feel confident that we are making the right decision in working with him.
On our first visit [at PREG] we were discouraged by a very long wait time with no explanation from the team (45 minutes past our appointment time). We have experienced 15-20 minute waits regularly for other appointments, which is challenging when I am leaving work to come there. ... The nurse that performed my ultrasound was very kind and made me feel entirely comfortable. She described everything she would be doing and really put me at ease.

He only wants to transfer on embryo although I would love multiple embryos...He will listen to all of your concerns...He is a very caring and compassionate doctor
[Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] has a very clean warm homey feel to it. Pictures everywhere in office of successful baby stories. It did not feel like a doctors office...[the nurse] offered me her number to answer any lingering questions Ike anything I thought of after my appointment. Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We first tried clomid for a cycle. He wanted me to track my period and intercourses. He then set me up for a test of my Fallopian tubes and uterus. He was very thoughtful in explaining treatment. Although I was very nervous I felt at ease. My husband lost his job after this appointment so I never went back. Basically it is a financial issue. I would really like to opportunity to get treatment to start a family with my husband. Please choose me.

Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
He only wants to transfer on embryo although I would love multiple embryos. I really just want children
Dr. Payne is a very forward doctor. I respect that about him because I would rather know up front what is the issue and solution to the problem at hand. The first consultation I had with him he was very nice and reassuring about everything I would’ve gone through and will go through. He was very open about the possibilities of every side effect, or possible pregnancy complications that could happen. Not that they would but it was better for him to explain
The clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] is very clean, organized and friendly. I never have any issues with information from questions I have when I go in. No matter the question you have, they have an answer. They are fast pace and work well to get you in and out.... She [nurse] is amazing! She is the IVF coordinator and has been helping me along the way from day one! She always keeps faith for me and is excited to see my baby one day!

Not that they would but it was better for him to explain it than to never explain it at all. I told him that I wanted to go full blast with meds and we did just that. At that time my father was dying of Lung Cancer and I was desperate to have a child so that he could get to meet him. Unfortunately, during my time trying to conceive my father passed away. It took such a major toll on me. I was actually planning to do IVF that next cycle but pushed it back. Later my sister in law passed away from Stomach Cancer and I have just been devastated. So much going on and with everyone in my ear telling me something good is going to come out of it, then have the one thing I want more than anything continually not happen is the worst feeling. I have cried with Dr. Payne and his nurses just because I felt that close with them. He is a listener, care giving doctor , and understanding doctor. When other people have told me to get another doctor, I tell them no! My doctor knows what he’s doing!! He has kept by my side throughout this journey and is more than excited to get me pregnant! To have him not give up on me makes me not give up on myself and that’s what truly matters the most. That is what makes him my favorite doctor. To know that I have a reliable doctor that I can depend on is the greatest feeling. After all, he will be part of the reason I one day, hopefully soon, have my miracle of joy.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Trust him, he knows what he’s doing.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Payne and his staff are considerably down to earth. He and his team do a wonderful job at connecting with me. Even though I know they see a lot of patients, I am made to feel like the only patient in their eyes. I feel like he cares along with his staff. I’m this moment in life times can feel a bit lonely but the staff and Dr. Payne reassure me that I’m not on this journey alone.
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
Dr. Payne suggestions were Femora with progesterone and if that didn’t work “naturally”, we would do that with IUI. If that didn’t work, IVF. He allowed me to try that to help out in financial cost but to see if it could jut happen! Doing the biggest procedure was a last result. I didn’t get pregnant with anything but I am hoping to achieve pregnancy with the help of this loan via IVF.

Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I appreciate the fact that he wants to consistently protect his patients and keep their best interest in mind. I accept the fact that he prefers eSET.
Dr. Payne has spent an extent of time speaking with me about every single one of my questions and going over the full spectrum of details on the plans ahead for the big picture goals of preserving my eggs to avoid having them further compromised by my stage four endometriosis as well as by the treatments I need for that disease. He has taken all of my specific needs and desires in to account with each recommendation
The physicians and clinical staff [Piedmont Repro] are amazing. I have however interacted with brighter, more sincere front office administrative staff in my past for scheduling needs and check-ins. And while their financial/insurance department is full of super sweet and friendly folks there, I have found that it is very easy for their efforts in preauthorization and financial quotes to get quickly out of sink with the plan of the cycle treatment and throw a speed bump in to the process.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
He is just a thoughtful and thorough care giver. He is a very highly trained and informed expert in his field, and he covers all of the basis when helping me think out the options I have for my course of treatment and long term goals. He is so friendly and certainly considerate of the sensitivity of my current disease process if stage four endometriosis and of my immense desire to bring another beautiful baby into God’s world. I am so very thankful for his help.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
To stay on top of the financial and insurance department that is in charge of preauthorizations in his office, if that is the financial situation that the prospective patient is coming from. Time sensitivity could definitely be improved with those administrative staff members.

Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We are still in the early stages of progress. We began with the base line scans for ultrasound folical count and lab drawings. Now we have moved on the recallibrating the ovulation scheduled via birth control method. Based on the number of follicles seen, the goal is to complete two cycles if financially possible so that I have enough to possibly freeze a combination of some eggs as well as some embryos, to get be enough chances of some of both remaining viable throughout the process. Once that is completed, we plan to treat me for endometriosis until my body is ready for a healthy pregnancy. I am so eager to experience an intimate pregnancy, carrying my child in me, and the joy of nursing and nurturing my little infant. God knows my heart and desires for this, and all of Dr. Payne’s methods and plans have been circled around this.

Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
They are so great at what they do and turkey compassionate. The physicians and clinical staff are amazing. Time sensitivity, as far as completing the process in June and July rather than waiting until September, for example would greatly help their patient experience overall for those who don’t walk in as a wealthy married couple prepared to pay everything on the spot. I am a single mom doing the best I can through my treatment needs for endometriosis and I am exhausting my efforts to have my eggs preserved so that I will have another baby when my body is ready. It’s a shame that something’s would have to be postponed to administrative details rather than justified clinical details. I would recommend new patients to stay on top of the info and process instead of ever letting it go the first 2 months assuming they’re getting the ball rolling on their end only to find out they’re not.

Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Those will be items we get to towards the last stages of the process and I look forward to learning more details about the methods when we are crossing the bridge. I haven’t sought that info yet as we are still starting all of this.
Throughout the initial consultation, Dr. Payne barely made eye contact. He blamed that on having to type information into the computer. He spoke so fast that we could barely keep up with what he was saying. A couple of weeks later I received a bill for our initial consult visit and it was around $350 and that did not include the $250 we paid in the office that day for a semen analyis and blood work.... We only have completely one cycle of femara, ovidrel, TI. This was per John Paynes recommendation after the loss of our pregnancy in the fall. I only received information through a nurse or through the receptionist and very often if I had questions, I was sent to a voicemail.
Whenever we called with questions we were sent to a voicemail [at PREG-Greenville]. Every time. Most the time it would take a day to receive a phone call. There was a specific appointment that I was needing to cancel because we were heading out of town, when I asked the nurse what we should do, she made a statement about canceling the ultrasound and how that was not an option, even if I came in two days before. It made no sense to me when I asked further and she had very little to no answers for questions.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
It was a horrible experience to say the least. We became pregnant naturally on a cycle not being treated, ended up having to terminate due to trisomy diagnosis and when we came back to the clinic there was not one mention or question about it. Back to "the plan" of fertility meds and appointment dates. I could not have felt more " investable" if I tried.

Strengths - They are one of maybe 2-3 fertility clinics in the area so they have access to so many patients and have the opportunity to make a difference in these peoples lives.
Weaknesses - They run the clinic like a business and the human factor has been lost. I didn't even feel like a patient. Truly disappointing.

Instead we received bills for things that were never alerted to us before hand. We went over financial information for some of the treatments offered and then would get a bill for $110 for talking with the Doctor. Made no sense. They are truly just concerned about the financial side of things.
[Dr.] John [Payne] was very knowledgeable and aggressive with my treatment, which was well needed. He was honest but kind, and produced the results that we were seeking! He made sure that he was involved in every step and no decisions were made without his approval. ... I have very polycystic ovaries, and it’s hard to induce ovulation. We started with inducing my period with provera as it was non-existent, and middle of the road doses of 7.5mg femara to see how I would respond. He took a gradual approach and increased the doses, but no results. We progressed to ovidrel injections and trigger shot each month. The results were still mediocre, and he came up with adding a small dose of anti-inflammatory steroid which was the magic trick, and I responded very well! I had thin lining so he added baby aspirin to maintain it.
The clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] was great, they always had availability for my iui procedures but some days there was quite a wait to be seen. This was only on busier days. I feel like they did quite well with scheduling considering the amount of patients using the location where I was. ... The nurses were great and supportive ...

I had great insurance so I had to meet a 3k deductible and everything was covered 90% after that. We paid about $650 per month for donor sperm
Dr Payne answered all of our questions and gave us a couple of different options for trying to conceive. He was very open about our diagnosis and told us that we had options instead of pushing us to do the most aggressive treatment. He gave us his time and never made us feel rushed. He talked with us for almost an hour and made sure we had all or our questions answered...was very kind, informative and compassionate from the moment we stepped into his office.
The nurses and our coordinator [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] were so nice and compassionate. They were with us every step of the process and although our transfer didn't result in a pregnancy they did call to check on us and see how we were doing after the negative pregnancy test. They all made us feel so welcome and cared for. They greeted us with a smile and kind words at every visit.

We did 2 cycles of IUI with femara and ovidrel to trigger. We also did 1 IVF cycle with BC pills prior and lupron and gonal f and ICSI. I have good ovarian reserve which and the reasoning for injections chosen and ICSI was chosen for our male factor diagnosis.

Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I have a history of multiples and complications with that pregnancy so Dr Payne's choice for a single transfer was discussed and agreed upon.
I only saw him [Dr. John Payne] one time and had several treatments. I saw a nurse practitioner most of the time.... IUI one time, then they stated that hindsight is 20/20 that they probably wouldn’t have had us doing IUI if they would have noticed my husband sperm count going down. We felt like the treatment and money was slightly wasted because they said they shouldn’t have been doing the treatments.
They informed me that they would use a code that would allow my insurance to take care of it, we have paid a lot out of pocket, but we have got a bill for over 1000$ when we were told our insurance would cover. I called several times got 2 people, then several times left message and did not get any response.... So when my insurance was 70/30 I thought we would be able to afford that, but the price went up for those insured and that to me in price gouging which made it impossible for us to follow through with any recommmedation it IVF because we still needed 10,000 for everything, and it was not reasonable for us to do that when the insurance was supposed to cover 70% of cost.
How was your experience with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I only saw a nurse tenentire the me, the first time I saw the doctor it was the last time we did treatment with IUI. No one told us the cost, thy put my husband on clomid and haven’t gotten back to us at all and it has been since June and it is now end of September. We haven’t heard anything and have recently felt like the doctors and the offices have forgotten about us. We have almost given up on the process because we don’t have any feedback or direction when we sought it out.

Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Great front desk, great rep for blood taken, comfortable, but felt recently that we have been forgotten. Strengths are friendly, knowledgable. Weakness are that the office overlooked important information regarding my husband then later shared with both of us that they probably wouldn’t have been doing IUI if they would have reviews the sperm counts each cycle more closely because he was decreasing. Without insurance it was 12,000 out of pocket, halfway through treatments we got insurance and the price changed. It was deceiving slightly and I don’t want to think that because of how comfortable you guys have made me feel overall, up until that point. Then, after you placed my husband on clomid, ordered more test, you have not gotten back to us on what to do next. That was a little disturbing.

Dr. Payne isnt as aggressive as I would have liked for this situation. He kind of had a laid back let's let God do his thing attitude which is cool at times but we were in a race against my endometriosis. I feel like if he had been apart of my ultrasound when we were doing trigger shots and timed intercourse maybe he would have noticed the cyst instead of it taking so many rounds before realizing what we were doing was making things worse. Also once we decided to go ahead with IVF the last ultrasound before my scheduled retrieval another doctor was doing the scan and became a little annoyed that someone started me on IVF with a polyp in my uterus again
There were a few check ups [at PREG] that only nurse was a part of. She thought she saw an egg but come to find out a few cycles down the road it was a cyst that would go away after my cycle and grew during fertility med...The clinic did a wonderful job working with my schedule, they would get me in to the first appointment or the last when needed and any doctor would see me if I needed a time that Dr. Payne was off or with another patient. Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
After the removal of a couple of polyps and endometriosis dr. Payne wanted to try a trigger shot and timed intercourse since my cycles were completely normal. We did a few months of that and it wasn't working, he realized I wasn't getting one good size egg and trigger I just had a cyst growing each month and going away my period. We decided that IVF would be the best option since my body wasn't responding well to this treatment and we were trying to get pregnant before my endometriosis returned. He put me on birth control for a month so that my body could heal from the cyst and try to make sure the endometriosis didn't come back in the mean time. Once my body was ready we dived right into the IVF cycle. I went in often for an ultrasound to keep an eye on my progress. Just before my retrieval polyps were discovered and the cyst returned so we had to retrieve the eggs, remove the polyps and lance the cyst. Since and embryo is less likely to latch to a uterus covered in scar tissue he decided it would be best to freeze the eggs and go back on birth control for two months then do a 5 day frozen embryo transfer. I had 10 eggs retrieved only 2 made it, I was in the age group for just one egg but one of my eggs wasn't looking very good so he went ahead and transferred both anyways. I was on progesterone for 10 weeks.
I now have a beautiful 10 month old boy.

Dr. Payne met with us to discuss options for IVF. It was a difficult conversation and his caring nature made it so much easier. He explained options clearly and answered all our questions. She explained everything in detail and shared in our emotional ups and downs. She was so helpful too as we chose our donor.

We used a donor so there was a great deal of information given to us regarding what steps the donor was undergoing for egg retrieval. Our first try was a fresh transfer. Dr. Payne explained this was best to begin with. He explained statistics and our protocol in detail verbally and in writing. We used birth control, Lupron, estrogen and progesterone. We agreed to transfer one embryo. I was pregnant for almost 11 weeks. After my miscarriage Dr. Payne was so compassionate and encouraging that I was able to carry a baby. He did not push us to try again. When we were ready we tried again and it was a frozen transfer. Single embryo again. We did not use Lupron and progesterone was given by suppository- no injections. We now have a beautiful healthy baby boy.
