How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena is an extremely knowledgeable doctor, he knew right away what our diagnosis was and how to more forward to help us conceive. Our first appointment he took his time getting to know my husband and I and our history of trying to conceive, we got our testing done swiftly and easily and he found our diagnosis within the same month as our first appointment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Go in with an open mind and all questions ready to be answered. Feel confident going in knowing you are in good hands with a great care team.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena quickly diagnosed my husbands infertility factor and gave us the route we needed to take to conceive successfully. Him and his team handled our treatment delicately, with care and expeditiously. I felt like I was more than a patient because when I walked in everyone remembers you from week to week.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
Once my husband got his male infertility factor diagnosis I was put onto birth control called Alyacen for a couple of weeks and then when directed I was told to start my injections to begin maturing my eggs. The medications used were Gonal F 150 IU which increased over the next week of injections to 250 IU and 2 vials of menopur as well as 250 MCG of centrotide. Those injections continued for 12 days and when my eggs were grown to a mature size ( measured via ultrasound and bloodwork) it was time for the trigger medications. The trigger shots were Novarel and Lupron taken at a specific time which prepared my body for the retrieval 3 days later.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Alexis )
I can't rave enough about how much I appreciated the support and understanding of the nursing team. The staff get my blood test results to me before the end of the day and explain every single result, what the next medications/ course of action is and when to see them next as well as send you an email of instructions and everything discussed including said result numbers. I felt comfortable with them and most times looked forward to talking to them.
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
The strengths are they get you in and out pretty quickly, they don't make you wait in the waiting rooms or exams rooms for a long time, they're friendly and answer questions thoroughly, receipts are sent right to your email for your records. I truly don't have a single bad thing to say about them.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Monitoring hours were between 6:30-7:30am. You walk in whenever you want between those times, check in, and sit waiting to be called. It was first come first serve but I never waited more than 10 minutes. Often times I was out within 5 minutes of walking in

[Dr. Joseph Pena] made me feel comfortable since our first meeting and I appreciated his honesty...there for me throughout this whole process...listened to both me and my partner, always allowing for questions, and giving us detailed answers...also was honest and always polite
Strengths [of RMA Long Island IVF (formerly Long Island IVF)]- great communication, consistent, caring, professional, know what they are doing and it shows! Weakness - that you only have 8 weeks with them after a positive pregnancy test...with the caring staff at RMA - I always knew what was going on with their great communication skills.
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
I am 38 years old and saw Dr. Pena after 6 months of trying to get pregnant on my own. He made me feel comfortable since our first meeting and I appreciated his honesty. We ended up moving to IVF after some discussions and I fully trusted Dr. Pena to be there for us during the whole process. Dr. Pena did my transfer and as of right now I am 7 weeks pregnant and just heard the heartbeat. Even though it is very early, I am hopeful and thankful for Dr. Pena being there for me throughout this whole process. Whether this works or we have to do another transfer, I am fully confident in him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Have full trust in Dr. Pena. He has your best interest at heart, including what is best for your health and your potential baby.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
I felt like a human because Dr. Pena listened to both me and my partner, always allowing for questions, and giving us detailed answers. He also was honest and always polite. I even like his sense of humor. Watching how he interacted with his staff also made me see his compassionate human side.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
Dr. Pena's approach was first having a consultation with myself and my partner to get to know our goals and history with trying to conceive. We were trying to conceive for 6 months on our own before coming in. After review, my partner had a sperm analysis and I did FemVue and a Water Sonogram to check our fertility. From there, we moved forward with IVF egg retrieval because of my age, being 38, I had a higher success rate of IVF working over insemination, and also so I could test the embryos for PGT-a, abnormal chromosomes to try and have the healthiest child possible. For the retreival, I was put on a few different stimulation meds such as Menopur and cetrotide. We also used a trigger injection to time everything precisely for retrieval. I reacted well to the meds and came in for monitoring very frequently. After the retrieval, after receiving the results - I ended up having 35 eggs retrieved where 25 fertilized... and then 5 embryos made it to blastophast - 3 came back eupoloid. After this, we prepared for the transfer where I was put on and still currently am on Estrace and Progesterone. We transferred 1 of the eupoloids and had a positive result. I am currently 7 weeks pregnant and heard the heartbeat today. I have one more appointment next week with Dr. Pena before graduating and seeing my regular obgyn. The whole process for me has been approximately 6 months to get here to reaching my goal of potentially being a mom.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
I am not good with bloodwork, but thanks to Rosie, her patience and caring nature made it much easier for me to do something that is a fear of mine. I can't thank her enough. The IVF retrieval process is alot between the meds and visits, but with the caring staff at RMA - I always knew what was going on with their great communication skills. They always answered any questions
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
I had 15k max coverage for a lifetime with my insurance plan. I ended up still paying about $15k out of pocket. Well worth it for the results!
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
I agree with the Dr.'s approach for single Embryo transfer. I'm pregnant wand so far everything is looking healthy. Dr. Pena keeps in mind the patient's health at all times.

Dr. Pena is a doctor who uses research and data to support his treatments...willing to answer any questions I had - and still have. He took my concerns seriously - and would talk me through decision making by citing research and data...ad compassion when giving me bad news...encouraging, but never gave me false hope...Dr. Pena went above and beyond for me. I trust him as my doctor and would refer my close friends to him.
The clinic [RMA Long Island IVF (formerly Long Island IVF)] has great staff, it was easy to get a hold of anyone you needed via phone...multiple locations, which helps with making morning monitoring work. It does get busy...there are days that you need to be patient when going in for regular monitoring...My coordinator, Melissa, and two nurses, Alexis and Jess, were absolutely incredible. They were easily reachable, guided me through every step, and were very encouraging.
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
I think that Dr. Pena is a doctor who uses research and data to support his treatments. I would use him again, for future embryo transfers. I liked how he was clear at each step of the process. He was encouraging, but never gave me false hope. As a result, I felt prepared at each step of the process for each of my three egg retrievals and embryo transfers. I had an accidental natural pregnancy when I took breaks between cycles and he guided me through that as well when blood work indicated it was ectopic. In this situation I feel that the staff and Dr. Pena went above and beyond for me. I trust him as my doctor and would refer my close friends to him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
I would tell them that Dr. Pena is going to be honest with them and that IVF doesn’t always work the first time around. It’s important to have realistic expectations and to trust the process.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
I felt that Dr. Pena was willing to answer any questions I had - and still have. He took my concerns seriously - and would talk me through decision making by citing research and data. I also think he had compassion when giving me bad news and I felt that he was invested in my future success. I am now pregnant and still feel supported as I get close to “graduating “ from my clinic.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
For the retrievals - birth control start, then menopur and gonal, then cetrotide and trigger before retrieval. For the transfers - oral estrace, progesterone in oil, Endometrin suppositories. 2/3 retrievals were successful. All 3 transfers were successful, I became pregnant, but the first two ended up being chemical. I am currently 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant with my third transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Melissa Britz)
My coordinator, Melissa, and two nurses, Alexis and Jess, were absolutely incredible. They were easily reachable, guided me through every step, and were very encouraging. I was lucky to have such an amazing team.
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
The clinic has great staff, it was easy to get a hold of anyone you needed via phone, and there are multiple locations, which helps with making morning monitoring work. It does get busy though, because it is a popular clinic, so there are days that you need to be patient when going in for regular monitoring.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
It was easy to squeeze monitoring in before work. All staff was pleasant, and the office was run efficiently to get people in, seen, and out on a timely manner.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Insurance covered my three rounds of retrievals/transfers. I only paid for copays, and genetic testing out of pocket.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
No comment - I was advised that the clinic only does single embryo transfers, that the risks with multiples are vast.

I expected there to be one go-to person (i.e. Dr. Pena) to go over my treatment plan with me based on my unique situation (bloodwork, semen analysis, age, etc.). That doesn’t really happen...I did email Dr. Pena a couple times with questions and he seemed annoyed. All that being said, he is clearly a knowledgeable doctor and I did end up getting pregnant. It just wasn't really a positive experience.
RMA’s business model is very impersonal, i.e. you are just a number...almost no interaction with Dr. Pena between my initial consult and my pregnancy test five months later. Another doctor did my egg retrieval and then a third one did my transfer. Saw a host of nurses, PAs, phlebotomists, and technicians in between. Everyone was very nice but I don’t think a single person (including the doctor) even knew my name.

Dr. Pena always takes the time to answer any question that you have timely and is very responsive...He explained to me once when asked if I should transfer two embryos for the next round (after my first two single embryo transfers failed) that his goal was to have a healthy pregnancy for me, not to just get pregnant. Considering my age at the time was less than 35, transferring a single embryo would be a better option.
the nurses that I worked with [at RMA Long Island IVF], Jessica and Alexis, always took the time to explain the exact steps that I needed to take and the amount of dosage each day. This really made the process less overwhelming for me...Morning monitoring hours were run very efficiently. How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
My husband and I met Dr. Pena when we decided to pursue IVF after being diagnosed with a chromosome translocation. We met with him during our first consultation to discuss the options related to chromosome translocations. I had several procedures done with him including an egg retrieval, three transfers, and an ERA test. Through each procedure, Dr. Pena always explained the steps of each procedure and what I could expect. He was always honest with us in the results that we could expect. I would highly recommend Dr. Pena and we are glad we chose RMA Long Island IVF.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Ask a lot of questions during your fertility treatment if you have them, as Dr. Pena always takes the time to answer any question that you have timely and is very responsive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Throughout my time here as a patient, Dr. Pena, the nurses, and the administrative staff, have been nothing but professional, kind, and welcoming. They always kept positive and provided encouragement through the ups and downs. They truly know how to put the patient first and were so responsive with any questions that we had for them.

Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Jessica and Alexis)
Fertility treatment and the number of medications and dosages that you need to take can be complicated. However, the nurses that I worked with, Jessica and Alexis, always took the time to explain the exact steps that I needed to take and the amount of dosage each day. This really made the process less overwhelming for me. If I had a question and called the office, I always received a call or an email back timely. After receiving bloodwork during morning monitoring hours, I always received a call with my results that afternoon on the same day.
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
RMA Long Island IVF has multiple offices on Long Island that you can go to. For example Dr. Pena's main office was East Patchogue. However, I often went to the West Islip or Melville offices for monitoring as they were closer to where I lived. Morning monitoring was always quick and efficient and I never waited long to be seen. The receptionists and admin team that I worked with were always responsive and helpful with any scheduling or billing questions that I had. At times there were long wait times, mostly when I set up my first consultation and initial scans prior to my egg retrieval but they always went in order of when the patient arrived. Facilities were clean and safe even during COVID 19. I never felt at risk of contracting COVID 19 while attending their facilities.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Morning monitoring hours were run very efficiently. I was able to go to their office that was closest to my home/work which made it very accomodating. I never waited long to be seen and patients were called in the order they arrived. During COVID, appointment times were given to handle capacity issues. I was very happy with morning monitoring appointments.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
My insurance covered most of my treatment costs. I found the treatment costs to be reasonable/inline with other clinics.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Dr. Pena had a strong perference transfering one embryo at a time. Age was factored into his preference. He explained to me once when asked if I should transfer two embryos for the next round (after my first two single embryo transfers failed) that his goal was to have a healthy pregnancy for me, not to just get pregnant. Considering my age at the time was less than 35, transferring a single embryo would be a better option.

Dr Pena was always very quick to respond to any questions regardless of how late he was contacted. He was compassionate on all interactions. He called during his vacation when my results came back to make sure I received them because he knew I was worried about the result. I felt very closely monitored and felt like he took the time to look at me as an individual and make modifications during the cycle.
[the RMA Long Island IVF nurses] were always thorough with instructions as well. When my local pharmacy didn’t have my rhogam shot, they both called around to multiple pharmacies to help me get it sooner without me asking just to make sure I got it that day...I would tell a new patient that sonograms were done by sonogram techs, nurses, or a doctor so sometimes you needed to wait until your call later that day to get all your questions answered but you always heard back the same day.
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr Pena was very thorough and always put my health and safety first. I was very closely monitored during every cycle. He was always available for questions regardless of the day or hour. He always took the time to make sure all my questions were answered. He was always compassionate and caring. He was easy to approach and ask questions to.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr Pena puts safety first, he makes sure you are very closely monitored throughout the process. I would say to make sure you reach out with any questions because he is always more than happy to make sure you understand each step of the process.

Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
On my IUI cycles I was on letrazole and then I was given a trigger shot. On my second IUI I was slower to respond and Dr Pena increased my letrazole dose. On my first egg retrieval cycle I was on gonal-f and one vial of menopur and as the cycle progressed my menopur was increased to two vials and my gonal-f was decreased. As the cycle progressed cetrotide was added in. Then I did trigger shots of pregnyl and Luprolide. On my next two retrievals I started taking metformin a few weeks prior to my injections. This time I was on 3 vials of menopur and no gonal-f. Then the rest of the protocol of cetrotide and triggers occurred. The only difference between my last 2 retrievals was that a few days into it my bloodwork showed high estrogen levels and my menopur was decreased and I started cetrotide a few days earlier. For transfers I started by taking 2 pills orally of estrace, after a few days that increased to 1 pill taken 3x a day. Then progesterone in oil was added. After my transfers those continued and endometrin 3x a day was added.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Jessica Castro and Alexis Rogers )
Jessica and Alexis were so easy to talk to and always took the time to answer any questions. They were kind, compassionate, and very knowledgeable. They were always thorough with instructions as well. When my local pharmacy didn’t have my rhogam shot, they both called around to multiple pharmacies to help me get it sooner without me asking just to make sure I got it that day (even though I had 72 hours)
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
It was very easy to get in touch with the office and call backs always occurred the same day. Sometimes wait times were long for monitoring. I would tell a new patient that sonograms were done by sonogram techs, nurses, or a doctor so sometimes you needed to wait until your call later that day to get all your questions answered but you always heard back the same day.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Monitoring was run pretty smoothly. On most days I was out in under 45 minutes when I had bloodwork and a sonogram. On some days it was very crowded. It was organized and not overwhelming. Everyone was friendly and I never felt rushed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
We paid for PGT testing and once pregnant I had $25 copays, the rest was covered by my insurance.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Dr Pena mentioned transferring one because it is the safest and poses the least risk to myself and the baby being transferred. He did mention if there were a few failed transfers we could discuss transferring 2.

Dr. Pena is very easy to talk to and presents information very clearly...Because I have PCOS Dr. Pena was very careful to develop a protocol that would develop quality eggs while minimizing the risk of OHSS. He started me on a low dose of medications and adjusted my trigger shot (lupron instead of hcg) and timing of my retrieval in order to maximize our outcome while minimizing potential risk. He explained this entire rationale and we ended up with the results he planned for.
The entire staff [at RMA Long Island IVF] was wonderful. Jess and Alexis are both extremely knowledgable and so supportive during the difficult parts of IVF...The office manager, Peggy was always incredibly helpful and was always a friendly face and another source of support throughout this journey. I have never experienced medical care where I truly felt so strongly about how wonderful the entire staff was as I do here.
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena is an exceptional physician. He is very professional and provided information in a way that easy to understand. He is always available by phone and email. There were many times I have emailed Dr. Pena and received a phone call shortly after. He never made me feel like my many questions were too much and I never ended a conversation with Dr. Pena unclear on any information. I appreciate his direct manner and ability to convey difficult information in a very matter of fact yet sensitive way. Most importantly, Dr. Pena is incredible at what he does. There were many times in our journey where it would have been easy to lose hope but I truly trusted Dr. Pena and his process. I am fortunate enough to be pregnant now and it is a direct result of the care I received from Dr. Pena.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Dr. Pena is very easy to talk to and presents information very clearly.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena is a wonderful physician and treats every patient like they are his top priority. I have sent many emails to Dr. Pena, to which he responded to via phone almost immediately-even while he was on vacation. He explains everything thoroughly and takes every questioned asked seriously, making the patient feel respected. Dr. Pena made the entire process feel like a partnership, always providing all of the information and medical background, while still including the patient in decisions.

[Dr. Joseph Pena] has been awesome during this whole process...started with a few cycles of IUI which did not work...3 rounds of IVF conducted...sure to be attenuative, quickly replied to our emails and calls, and answered whatever questions we had
RMA Long Island East Patchogue branch is clean and tidy...staff is very friendly and they're there to assist you every step of the way...wait times in the mornings are usually no more than 15-20 mins...Jess, Alexis, Melissa, Rosie, Karen and whoever I missed) has been awesome during this whole process
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena came highly recommended to us from our OB. Dr. Pena and his team (Jess, Alexis, Melissa, Rosie, Karen and whoever I missed) has been awesome during this whole process. We first started with a few cycles of IUI which did not work and then we moved onto IVF and did a few rounds of that. It has been a roller coaster of emotions but Dr. Pena and his team has been with us every step of the way. We had 3 rounds of IVF conducted, the first implant unfortunately did not take, but it was the second implant that really put us through it a bit. With the second round we ended up getting a positive result initially, on a Friday and after going through failed IUI and IVF treatments, we were so happy to get that news. Unfortunately, it was short lived as that Monday we were informed that we mis-carried. While that news was hard to take, the team has been with us every step of the way. We ended up jumping right into the next implant, which I am currently happy to say has led me to currently being 5 weeks pregnant. While it has been a roller coaster of emotions and is still early in the pregnancy, Dr. Pena and team was sure to be attenuative, quickly replied to our emails and calls, and answered whatever questions we had. I would definitely recommend Dr. Pena and his team at RMA LI.

Morning monitoring hours were perfect. Especially the team they have their morning monitoring hours. I can always run to my appointment before I have to go into work. I love that they start morning monitoring at 6:45am. It is very convenient for people that have a 9-5 jobs and do not have to show up to their jobs late. The monitoring rooms are cleaned and stacked with liners and tissues if needed.

My work insurance covered most of the cost. I just had to meet my out of pocket cost which was $3000 and the rest was covered by my insurance minus my co-pays every time I needed an ultrasound

Dr. Pena was very clear about what to expect...very candid about risks and what could possibly happen...took the time to go over percentages and other statistics in regards to successful pregnancies and age...one round of IUI...For IVF, I take estrogen every day (3 times a day) and I do a shot progesterone in oil every evening
The RMA IVF LI clinic, all locations, are clean and nice...no weaknesses to report. For a new patient, I would recommend going to monitoring more on the early side (6:45am) because the wait could become long when you go towards the end of monitoring...only word I have to describe them is GREAT.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Don't be nervous to ask questions! Dr. Pena is very quick to answer emails and will call you right away to give you any reassurance or answers you need.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena was very empathetic to my needs and feelings. I am an over-analyzer and high strung, but Dr. Pena was professional and answered my emails promptly and thoroughly. We are very appreciative of his care.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
I did one round of IUI - I don't remember the specifics of those medications. For IVF, I take estrogen every day (3 times a day) and I do a shot progesterone in oil every evening. The estrogen is to maintain the thickness in the uterine walls, and the progesterone in oil is to keep the embryo safe inside of the uterus. The progesterone in oil shots are not painful - sometimes it helps to use a heating pad after the shot to help the oil dissolve.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Jessica Castro)
The only word I have to describe them is GREAT. I absolutely loved loved loved going into the office and would get so excited when they would call, because they were also very helpful and positive. Cannot say enough great things about them!

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Monitoring is from 6:45 am - 7:30 am. I would recommend going in more on the early side. Sometimes, if any of the other offices are closed, the wait could be a little longer. Once you're in for monitoring, you are in and out very quickly :)

Everything except the embryo testing were covered under insurance.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.

[RMA of New York - Long Island IVF] quickly guide patients to next steps...weakness is there is no direct linkage when it comes to understanding billing process, as a patient extra effort is required for understanding and dealing with finances through insurances...they are very welcoming and respectful

Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Overall almost 13,000 $ for each cycle . Progyny is helpful but does not explain some details : for example , they say 3 cycles are covered :but it's not clear information :they only cover all 3 cycles if none of them were a success consecutively leading to the 3rd. Meaning if there was one success they will not cover the 3rd. It's the same with egg retrieval coverage.

Dr. Pena has always provided sensitive information in a very compassionate way...takes the time to develop a treatment plan that will be most successful...worked with me to adjust my medications and make other changes to increase my success...took the time to get to know me as a person
The entire staff [of RMA of New York - Long Island IVF] is caring and compassionate...morning bloodwork is done on a first come/first served basis, so you can come when it’s most convenient for you in a given day...answer emails and phone calls promptly to provide updates and answer any questions.
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena has always provided sensitive information in a very compassionate way. He also takes the time to develop a treatment plan that will be most successful. For example, after my first egg retrieval did not yield as many eggs as we had hoped, Dr. Pena worked with me to adjust my medications and make other changes to increase my success. Dr. Pena also took the time to get to know me as a person, which was evident in our conversations where he remembered both medical and personal things. This made the treatment process more comfortable.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Don’t forget to include your phone number when you email him. He will most often call you in response to an email to make sure all questions/concerns have been addressed, which is very helpful.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Dr. Pena has always provided information in a realistic, but compassionate way. He always personally answers all emails (usually with a phone call) to answer any questions. He also spends considerable time ensuring that you understand all aspects of the treatment plan.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
I do not recall the exact doses for egg retrievals. I remember that the doses were lower for my first egg retrieval and we increased the doses, added coq10 and acupuncture for my subsequent retrievals. These changes made a significant increase in the retrieval numbers. Currently, for my FET, I have been taking 2mg estradiol 3x per day and 50mg of progesterone in oil 1x per day. My recent embryo transfer was successful and my hormone levels are progressing appropriately.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Jess and Alexis)
Throughout my multiple cycles (egg retrievals and FET), the nursing staff has always been compassionate, knowledgeable, and informative. They answer emails and phone calls promptly to provide updates and answer any questions. They also call with every set of blood/sonogram results and take the time to explain what they mean.
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
The entire staff is caring and compassionate. The one thing to be aware of is that morning bloodwork is done on a first come/first served basis, so you can come when it’s most convenient for you in a given day. Just make sure to account for busier times of the morning to avoid waiting longer than necessary.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
I always try to go on the earlier side of monitoring hours, so I’ve very rarely experienced a wait longer than 5-10 minutes
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Thankfully, my insurance covered my treatments. My only out of pocket expenses were for medical & prescription copays and for the genetic testing.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
I naively initially wanted to transfer 2 embryos with my first transfer, with the idea that I ideally wanted at least 2 children and thought it would be easier to have one pregnancy. Dr. Pena spent a considerable amount of time explaining the concerns and increased risks for both pregnancy & delivery of multiples. He felt strongly that transferring one embryo was the safest approach for an healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Ultimately, I trusted his judgement and we transferred one embryo. I am glad that I trusted his judgement because I ended up developing preeclampsia, which could have been much worse if I had multiples. Thankfully, My son was born safe & healthy. For my recent embryo transfer, we again transferred one embryo.

My care was 100% covered by my insurance

This is my second time using him and honestly I travelled 45 mins without hesitation for Dr Pena. I could have gone to a nearer clinic but I chose to travel only for him. He is one of the best doctors in the industry. He is so positive, his energy is phenomenal and he is such an honest person...we did PGD testing both times as me and my husband wanted to especially due to my age. Did the estrace pills and progesterone oil injections till 12 weeks to make sure lining is thick and embryo sticks amazingly.
They are very organised [at RMA Long Island IVF]. Very clean. Work in an extremely efficient manner. They have people for different departments who are experts in their areas. Like when we wanted to discuss expenses and what is covered by insurance or not there was a lady who explained everything in detail and how it will all work with finances out of pocket...One of the best nurses I met. Extremely caring and compassionate and very timely and efficient.

Dr. Peña helped me have a baby and he’s helping me have another. I owe everything to him and his staff for helping my husband and I create a family that would’ve never been possible without him. He’s very informative and does his job well. He is extremely thorough, which leads to successful treatments...very straight forward with treatment. He asks question about what you expect to happen and he tells you what the treatment will look like. He gets to known the patient, calls and e-mails when need be.
Their [RMA Long Island IVF] goal is to help you start a family and that’s exactly what they do. They are well organized, quick to solve any issues that arise, willing to talk you through something if you’re unsure and easy to get a hold of. They are a busy clinic but being well organized helps keep the patients moving along...Nursing care and staff are always very informative and compassionate...RMA is considered a center of excellence.

Check all the boxes before you go see Dr. Pena. If he asks you to get something from a different doctors office, it’s only because he’s looking out for you as a patient. He’s extremely thorough, which I appreciate.

I underwent 2 water sonograms. Both were done before my transfer to make sure my uterus was a good place for an embryo. I had 2 egg retrievals. I did 2 egg retrievals back to back because we wanted to get as many eggs as possible when I was the youngest. Because we had male infertility and were using donor sperm, the eggs were frozen. During those retrievals I was on different meds like birth control (to keep track of my cycle) and injections to help produce more follicles. After we got the donor sperm, the embryos were injected and we sent out the 11 embryos for genetic testing. I underwent 2 transfers at first. The first resulted in a pregnancy, but unfortunately, my hcg started to decrease and there was an early miscarriage. The second transfer resulted in my daughter that was born in June 2022. I just had a recent transfer and am currently 6 weeks pregnant. During the first pregnancy I was on estrace, progesterone in oil and endometrin vaginal inserts. This pregnancy I am on the same minus the endometrin vaginal inserts because there is a shortage. I will continue meds until I graduate from RMA and am fully under my OB care.

It took me a long time to get pregnant and all along the way Dr. Pena was always trying to change things and make things work for me. He was very understanding and available. He was blunt when I needed him to be and reassuring and kind when I needed him to be...always was concerned with my thoughts and feelings and always responded back to my worried emails even if it was 10 at night or super early in the morning. He always took the time to explain things (over and over) and always tried his best to put me at ease.
This clinic [RMA Long Island IVF] is very clean and welcoming. It is organized and friendly. Sometimes there is a long wait but they open early and are very accommodating to people who work jobs with early hours. They normally start at 6:30 but are sometimes open a little earlier so I recommend getting there as early as you can. They used to have coffee and treats in the office which was a very nice touch but since Covid have discontinued this ,it would be nice if they bring this back because it was a nice comfort when being there for such a sensitive reason.

Dr. Pena tried many thing with me. We used estrogen patches when trying to increase my follicle count for egg retrievals. He also recommended Co-Q-20 for egg retrieval as well, He recommended acupuncture to relieve my stress. We tried baby aspirin to help with transfers. He did a lining biopsy when my transfers weren't working. Finally, he thought I might have had Endometritis which is inflammation of the uterine lining and prescribed me two heavy antibiotics (one being Cipro and the other I don't remember) before attempting my last successful embryo transfer.

Dr. Pena is extremely thorough in his approach and execution. He was very honest with me from the start and we discussed all options. His expertise and genuine care was the combination I needed from a fertility doctor...write down Dr. Pena's email so you may ask him questions directly as things come up. He is very responsive to both emails and phone calls...did a single embryo transfer and considering that I am already high risk bc of my age I was in agreement with this.
I can't say anything negative about this clinic [RMA Long Island]. They were on top of things when it came to my insurance, financial responsibilities, appts, etc And everyone greets you with a friendly face. The clinic is excellent with communicating as well...The whole office has been so kind and wonderful to work with. It has really made all the difference. I will never forget any of them or their kindness...Dr. Pena treated me with the utmost respect and care from the very start. Sadly that was not the case with a previous dr from a different practice. Dr. Pena was honest and thoughtful and was extremely thorough in everything he did. I would trust no one else as my fertility doctor.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
I would suggest bringing a notebook to take down notes on that first visit. It's a lot of information and yes they send everything in an email afterwards. But I feel like taking notes helps you process things better. Also, write down Dr. Pena's email so you may ask him questions directly as things come up. Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
It's hard for me to recall the specifics of treatment. First round, we tried with my own eggs. I started with birth control followed by stimulation meds and ovul suppressants. The success rate was 5 % and based on the stimulation meds, I only generated 2 eggs. Unfortunately I ovulated even on meds that were there to help prevent it. Dr Pena and I had a good conversation about donor eggs and he explained to me that I had a much higher chance of getting pregnant and having a child with donor eggs. It was a no brainer to me. I didn't want to go through heartbreak again and I wanted a real chance at becoming a mother. So second round started with birth control followed by estrace and progesterone injections. We used donor eggs and the result was three good quality embryos. I am starting to wean off my meds now and I am currently 9 wks, 6 days pregnant after a five day embryo transfer on July 26th, 2023.

Alexis is very knowledgeable and caring and always gave me the attention and validation I needed. She was there for me through the highs and lows and definitely went above and beyond. I also need to mention Rosie, the phlebotomist as well. She is such a kind and caring soul who brought me Tweety Bird bandaids bc I didn't like wrapping my arm after giving blood. The whole office has been so kind and wonderful to work with. It has really made all the difference. I will never forget any of them or their kindness.

Dr. Peña explained that most women over 35 choose to transfer 2 embryos but women my age, under 35, who are healthy like me, usually transfer 1. If was ultimately my decision in the end.

First and Foremost they take insurance! My insurance coved most of the treatment plan but not all. Going into my process I knew i was going to have to pay a bit of money and I was ok with that. They also sit with you and explain all the cost and what you will have to cover so nothing comes as a surprise. Also if you have any questions about cost they are very good at braking everything down for you and even giving you a hard copy brake down.

How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
After experiencing 3 miscarriages from spontaneous pregnancies, I became one of Dr. Peña’s patients with the hopes that undergoing IVF would help me achieve my goals. After my first consultation, I found Dr. Pena to be intelligent, patient, honest, thorough, informative, and trustworthy. He presented all facts to me and I felt that I totally understood the risks and benefits of IVF treatment. Although learning of the risks was not comforting, I appreciated Dr. Peña’s honesty and was not blindsided by any of my experiences throughout the process. Dr. Pena was my metronome in this roller coaster experience. He provided me with reassurance after I had a 4th miscarriage after my first IVF cycle and explained the reasons why that possibly occurred with justified facts and statistics. I felt secure under his care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Place your trust in Dr. Pena. He is so knowledgeable, factual, and on the cutting edge of his field. He is detail oriented and rest assured that he is fully paying attention to your case and is present. He truly cares about what he does.

Due to my diminished ovarian reserve and advanced age, I was on the higher dose of Gonal F (300 units) and Menopur 150 units (which increased to 225-300 units variably throughout the retrieval process based on my clinical presentation) for my first egg retrieval. This resulted in 16 eggs retrieved. For my second egg retrieval, I used Follistim AQ (300 units) due to diminished ovarian reserve and Menopur 150 units (increased to 225 units throughout the cycle based on my clinical presentation). This resulted in 11 eggs retrieved.

She patiently answered all of my questions, went above and beyond and offered to give me a tutorial on how to properly use my medications. My first cycle, I paid out of pocket as my insurance at the time did not cover any IVF services. I would say that my total costs including medications and monitoring costs was around $25,000. I had IVF insurance coverage during my second cycle and the cost was much lower. Since I had a deductible, my costs were probably around $6,000 in total.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Because I had my embryos genetically tested, I was informed that the safest option for me was to transfer one normal embryo per transfer.

Dr. Pena made me and my partner feel like there was hope for us starting our family. Our initial consultation gave us all of the information that we needed to make the choice to undergo IVF. Throughout the entire IVF process Dr. Pena made himself available to speak with whenever we had questions or concerns. When our daughter was born, we gave him a picture to display in the office.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. My partners semen analysis came back fine as well as my egg quality and quantity. The best approach was IVF with having the highest percentage of a positive pregnancy and live birth. We decided to test our embryos due to our age. We opted for a frozen embryo transfer. The first transfer resulted in a chemical pregnancy, the 2nd time we conceived our daughter. She was born in 2021. We are currently in our 3 rd week post transfer with a positive beta HCG and sono!

Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Alexis Rogers-Fulton )
My journey started right after our initial consultation with Dr. Peña and his team. They are all professionals combining responsibility and care. Here they are … Alexis is always full of passion and kindness. She gave us many calls with explanations and detailed instructions. Rosie and Sarah’s smiling faces, cheerful voice and happy laughing and small talk with them; and Jessi, she has much more patience with whatever we ask about. I remembered she instructed my husband and I how to inject my medications again and again; many instructions for ordering medications and preparing documents from Melissa; and every time I went to the office, Keren and Liz were the first seen person there, and so on (Sorry, there are many people I have not had a chance to remember their names.) … Anyways, I have to say that when I saw them and talked to them, I felt delighted, peaceful, and safe because I knew that I had great company with me through this journey.

Dr. Peña 's clinic is well organized and detail oriented. Especially in the morning rush time, you never wait so long to finish your routine checkup. Besides, they sacrificed their family breakfast time, but put the patients’ needs first. I never need to ask a sick leave to finish my routine checkup because after I finished my checkup and I still have enough time for breakfast and work on time. In addition, I always got my results back on the same day.

I think Dr. Peña fully explains each patients scenario while giving realistic expectations. I think he always took the best course of treatment for me. If something did not goes as planned, he personally called me and explained the scenario and what we were going to do moving forward. The focus was always on getting to the positive outcome of a healthy pregnancy...I never felt "rushed" out of an appointment.
I think the [RMA Long Island IVF] clinic is nice and clean, it is very busy but they do a good job of moving patients along and I have never had an experience where I have waiting a long time, unlike other doctor offices. Morning monitoring runs smoothly and I'm grateful that they open so early because I need to be at work before 8:00AM...The nurses are unbelievable. They are friendly, funny, and extremely personable. Felt like talking to an old friend when they called. They never rushed a phone call or left an email unanswered.

I felt like a human because the staff was always attentive, even though there is a large quantity of patients. I never felt "rushed" out of an appointment.
Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
In my first treatment in 2020, I had one successful IUI. The nurses were very candid that another IUI was probably not the best course of treatment for me, which saved me time in moving forward with IVF. Unfortunately the embryos from my first egg retrieval did not continue past day 5, so I did another cycle of stimulation and egg retrieval. I was able to get 3 healthy embryos, 2 of which have resulted in transfers and pregnancies.

Monitoring goes smoothly, even though there are so many patients. The phlebotomy staff is great also. I like that the clinic is open at 6:30 AM and I would even show up early if they let me.

Dr. Peña is very professional and attentive to details. He is very serious and blunt. While he tries to interact with patients in a friendly manner, this is not his strong suit. He is clearly more comfortable sticking with the facts and science rather than small talk...advised when he recommended one versus two embryo transfers and honored my decision...Don’t expect an overly friendly bedside manner - expect straight talk.
This clinic [RMA Long Island IVF] requires you to obtain all necessary records from your other physicians. They are extremely disorganized in this regards and somehow always “never received” anything any of my other doctors sent over. Finally I had to demand that they deal with obtaining my records or I had records sent to me directly and I would forward them myself. Try to deal Alexis over Jess whenever possible.

When I was scheduled to begin my first cycle, they failed to tell me that the donor sperm needed to be in their possession until the 11th hour. Also, after my first transfer, they failed to tell me to start a necessary medication.

He [Dr. Joseph Pena] has been honest and direct with us since our very first meeting. We are an older couple and have fewer options than younger couples might have. Dr. Pena has been very straight forward about our chances throughout this entire process. No sugar-coating, no BS. And when we’ve had questions (and there have been many) he responds immediately.
every time I come in [to RMA Long Island IVF] for an appointment or procedure, the staff seem to know a lot about me. They always address me by name and really sounded and acted like they remember everything about my case. the conversations we had always felt personal and intimate. I walk in feeling that they are rooting for my success...We started our fertility journey with a different provider and are so unbelievably happy that we later chose Dr. Pena.
How was your experience with Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF?
Choosing a fertility specialist is a big decision. We spent countless hours looking at reviews, gathering input from friends, etc …and are blessed that we chose Dr. Pena. Our drive to his office is extensive (there are many other fertility specialists much closer) and every single minute of every single trip has been worth it. He has been honest and direct with us since our very first meeting. We are an older couple and have fewer options than younger couples might have. Dr. Pena has been very straight forward about our chances throughout this entire process. No sugar-coating, no BS. And when we’ve had questions (and there have been many) he responds immediately. In one case, he was on vacation in Mexico and returned our e-mail question, in only several minutes, with a phone call. His attention to our concerns, and promptness with responses, has provided us with a peace of mind that no other doctor (or any kind) has ever provided. We started our fertility journey with a different provider and are so unbelievably happy that we later chose Dr. Pena.

Describe the protocols Joseph Pena used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
my first ER was an antagonist protocol. i was on high dosage of Gonal F and Menopur. Cetrotide was introduced a few days after followed by 2 trigger shots. They retrieved 3 eggs, 2 fetilized but did not produce any blastocyst. second ER was a Microdose Lupron Flare Protocol. i was on 5 units of Lupron shots twice a day partnered with Gonal F and Menopur, triggered with one HCG shot. They got 4 eggs, 3 fertilized and 2 blastocysts. Dr. Pena advised us to get it PGT-A tested but I was worried it won't survived and we won't have anything to transfer (i regret this decision to this day). for our 3rd ER, there was a shortage of menopur so Dr. Pena had me take Gonal F, 5 units of lupron twice a day and 4 units of novarel everyday. i triggered with novarel as well. This cycle gave us 7 eggs retrieved and 4 fertilized. 2 made it to blast and 1 euploid.

Everyone who i had in contact with was kind, compassionate and accommodating yet till very professional. No matter what time of the day you show up at the clinic, they all seem happy, ready and willing to help.
Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
the strength would be their knowledge of fertility in all. the organization level they have is beyond any place i have ever been and I've seen a lot of doctors and clinics. they're so reliable on following up with results, next appointment or just by checking on me after every procedure.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
The monitoring would be from 6.30am-7.45am, i believe. I had to drive an hour each way to get to the Patchogue clinic so it was helpful that i could just go to a closer location for just bloodwork and sonograms and Dr. Pena or Alexis/Jessica would call in the afternoon with the results. wherever location i go, the wait is very minimal.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Pena at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
Our insurance did not cover IVF so my husband and i paid for all the cycles, FET and PGT-A testing. The total cost of 3 ER and 1 frozen transfer was $40,310 (this include the CooperGenomics testing cost of $2700). Medications was $13, 450. third party Anesthesia was $1800. and additional $310 for 2 embryos sent for testing.
Describe Joseph Pena's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
i didn't have this option as i only produced one euploid.

I was a precious patient of Doctor Peña in 2020. During this time he was able to help me conceive our daughter and carry full term. I returned back to Dr. Peña in 2022 for a consolation and began IUI in January of 2023. By my second cycle of IUI I had a positive pregnancy test. I am currently almost 5 weeks pregnant. I couldn’t be happier with the treatment I received from Dr. Peña helping us conceive our two blessings.
The [RMA Long Island IVF] clinic is very organized and has multiple locations which makes it easier on the patient to visit any location for monitoring. The staff was always friendly and made you comfortable. The phlebotomist were great and never had an issue drawing my blood...[nurses] Jess and Alexis were always very friendly and took their time to explain everything and what next steps would be. When I received a positive pregnancy test, both Jess and Alexis truly showed happiness.

Before beginning IUI doctor Peña had my husband complete a seman analysis, I had to complete a HSG to confirm the was no blockages in my tubes. From there, we were able to proceed onto IUI. On cycle day 3 I began 50mg of Clomid and was closely monitored throughout my cycle with blood work and sonograms. Prior to ovulation I would use the trigger shot and then come in 1-2 days later for IUI.
