He [Dr. Joseph Whelan] never remembered our names after numerous appointments and asking at the beginning of every meeting. It seemed like every meeting was the first as he never remembered what we had already discussed...Very poor communicator and extremely hard to get a hold of. He would explain things that did not pertain to our treatment, even after telling us so. He talked to us like we were morons and didn't understand simple logic. It was very irritating that he kept saying how every was trying to get pregnant during this time, as if we were expected to wait our turn?
Communication is a clear weakness [at REACH]...One day I called 30 times (not an exaggeration, I counted) and they answered the phone ONCE. The nursing team and the doctor were never on the same page. Multiple times we were told one thing by the nursing team only to have the doctor say something different days later. This resulted in having to wait another cycle before being able to take the next step (multiple times). They were awful with billing and paperwork as well. I never saw a single strength from this clinic or team. Other than taking our money and wasting our time.

If communication, timely responses, and sympathy are important to you find someone else.

He never remembered our names after numerous appointments and asking at the beginning of every meeting. It seemed like every meeting was the first as he never remembered what we had already discussed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Responses to questions or appointment requests weren't answered timely, sometimes ever. They caused us to miss multiple milestones in our care pushing back our timeline by a month each time (for obvious reasons) by not responding to calls or emails. They NEVER answer the phone or call you back. They were very apologetic each time but that never resulted in better performance the next time around. However, very full of excuses and reasons as to why they couldn't to their job.

What specific things went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
  • Lost appointments
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
  • Canceled a cycle due to clinic error
Describe the specific things that went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
They dropped the ball numerous times on various things. And there was no were or no one to go to in order to complain or get it cleared up. From the start, they didn't schedule an appointment we requested. They didn't post or send our test results. After asking for them they acknowledged they had had them for some time. They routinely didn't respond to our questions, requests or complaints. One particular time we needed to notify them on the first day of the monthly cycle and when we did no one responded. We called, emailed, left messages on the portal and it took days for a response. By that time they let us know it was too late and we needed to wait until the first day of the next months cycle.

[Dr. Whelan's] strength is looking at the previous test that I had done and wanting to confirm everything on his own. He said good things about my previous doctors but explained that some additional testing should be done to find a cause instead of going straight into a resolution. No weaknesses have been shown yet. I honestly feel like I will be able to trust him and his expertise
[REACH] Served breakfast in the lobby. Fruits, muffins, etc. I found that to be very nice since I’m a traveling patient and didn’t have time for breakfast. It’s a lot of moving around which isn’t bad but I think departments should be aligned in the order that the patient would see them...[the nurse] Made sure to explain everything in detail. Stated things verbally but also gave me a copy in writing.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
With him everything is based around your period. This is when he will do most of his recommended testing. So I would try to book an appointment around cycle day 3 so that you can get started immediately.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
He let us come into his office. Spoke to us by name without having to refer back to his paperwork to confirm our names like some doctors do. Focused on our plans and let us make decisions based on his recommendations.

Birth control will be used, he explained that it angers a lot of women because they feel that it’s a step in the wrong direction. However it’s so he can control your body and how it responds when you officially start treatment.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Actual cost would be determined after the prior authorization sent to my insurance. Out of pocket people would probably spend about 15,000 with medication included.
Describe Joseph Whelan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
This will be discussed at our next appointment. I would love to transfer multiple but I do know some doctors aren’t comfortable with that. Which would be ok just wishful thinking.

he [Dr. Joseph Whelan] explains things very throuroghy and answers all my questions. There have been several appointments where he stayed past our appointment time so we got all our questions answered...He is very thorough and knowledgeable...He is very matter of fact and blunt, but does want the best for you. He isn't present at every monitoring visit and occasionally it may be hard to get a response...My body has responded and follicles have grown after the Clomid. My first round I did take a progesterone test and confirmed that I did ovulate which means the trigger shot did it's job.
[The nurse at REACH is] always friendly and responsive...One time I came in for a visit and they had it down as an embyo transfer visit. We are just doing medicated cycles. They fixed it right away and I was still seen..., my HSG was about $2,000 because I had to do it at a hospital...Billing can be a pain...But the hours are convenient. Monitoring can have a long wait, but I like that it's drop-in in the morning before I go to work. I also like that you can do everything in the building. Lab staff is also friendly. It is easy to schedule and I like using their online portal.

Describe the protocols Joseph Whelan used in your cycles at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
I have done monitored medicated cycles with Clomid 50 mg and an Ovidrel trigger shot. We chose this due to our budget. Currently in my second cycle. My body has responded and follicles have grown after the Clomid. My first round I did take a progesterone test and confirmed that I did ovulate which means the trigger shot did it's job. However, we did not result in a pregnancy. So far this round, I had two mature follicles before triggering and now we're waiting for results. The doctor told us it may take 3-5 rounds to get pregnant using this method.

Describe your experience with REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
It feels sterile when you first go and be prepared to talk about financing first. Billing can be a pain. And there have been some mix-ups at check-in for me like having me down for the wrong type of visit. But the hours are convenient. Monitoring can have a long wait, but I like that it's drop-in in the morning before I go to work. I also like that you can do everything in the building. Lab staff is also friendly. It is easy to schedule and I like using their online portal.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
It's been about $220 plus $220 for meds each monitored medicated round. That includes ultrasound and copays. Before treatment, my HSG was about $2,000 because I had to do it at a hospital.
What specific things went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?

One time I came in for a visit and they had it down as an embyo transfer visit. We are just doing medicated cycles. They fixed it right away and I was still seen. I was also awaiting results. When I got a call back, they started to give me protocol info and then added to come in for an IUI. We weren't doing an IUI which I said right away. She apologized and acknowledged that was incorrect.

I was so grateful that he [Dr. Whelan] was able to provide me with exact causation, through blood panels, to explain the physiological changes I had undergone since I had stopped taking my birth control... He has a great way of explaining things in such detail that you can tell he's really knowledgeable on the subject, but also isn't throwing jargon at you to make it confusing. I have had a pretty lengthy period of just getting from my first visit at REACH to the start of the stimulants for IVF, so I have seen Dr Whelan a decent amount of times, but not each visit is with him personally, which is okay because he doesn't necessarily need to be by my side for each ultrasound. Anytime we met with Dr Whelan, I never left feeling confused about our next steps.
She [nurse at REACH] always called when she said she would, always checked up when she said she would, provided great communication and assistance when needed (issue with billing)...The monitoring portion experience was really hit or miss. Sometimes I'd go in right when they'd open and have only a few people in front of me in line, and sometime's I'd go in and there'd be 25 people there
How was your experience with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
I'm so lucky that I was paired with Dr Whelan at my first visit to REACH! I honestly felt like I had done a ton of research on my PCOS condition before meeting with Dr Whelan, but he provided so much more information than I was able to find on my own online. I was so grateful that he was able to provide me with exact causation, through blood panels, to explain the physiological changes I had undergone since I had stopped taking my birth control . My regular OB wanted me to just keep trying naturally to have a baby, even after diagnosing the PCOS, but luckily I used my gut instinct and made an appointment at REACH because we found out that we also had a male infertility factor at play, and some of my hormones were so off the chart, that conceiving naturally just wouldn't have been an option.

He loves to talk. So make time in your schedule. Don't be rushed.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
When you get your office time with the Doctor himself, he is very thorough with you and doesn't seemed rushed to get to his next patient. He covers everything in so much more detail than you could find online. His bedside manner is such that he doesn't seem like he's babying you too much, but will give it to you straight.
Describe the protocols Joseph Whelan used in your cycles at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
IVF with Frozen egg transfer and ICSI Prescribed Gonal-F (150units to start then upped to 225 for the last 3 days), Cetrotide (used 6 boxes), and HCG (20ml). Ended up with 31 eggs retrieved, 15 mature, 8 fertilized with ICSI procedure.
Describe your experience with your nurse at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Two: Veronica and Melissa)
Dr Whelan had two nurses that I saw regularly, Veronica and Melissa. Veronica I saw more before we started the actual IVF procedures, as Melissa is Dr Whelan's IVF nurse. She always called when she said she would, always checked up when she said she would, provided great communication and assistance when needed (issue with billing).
Describe your experience with REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Strengths - Dr Whelan, availability, location, good communication between Doctors and Nursing team Weaknesses - BILLING DEPARTMENT! If you look up any reviews online, all the negative ones are related to billing. Honestly, I'm still so confused about my standings with this company's billing department. It doesn't help that their billing department is not located here for me to just talk to someone, and my Financial Counselor was little help. The put a rush on you to pay for treatments to begin, which doesn't leave any time for your insurance company to get squared away with their existing claims. They tried to get me to overpay by almost $1000 for my services because their information on how much of my deductible I had already met was severely off. So instead they just said, just pay the "non-billable" portion and we'll get started. So I did. Then I requested an updated bill for my IVF cycle and they said, we'll just bill you at the end. I've asked twice now for the total cost so I can just pay it outright and they won't do it. They double billed me for my first visit and I paid the portion it said I owed. Then the insurance company ended up paying it and we were supposed to get a refund check, which I told them was fine if they wanted to just put it as a credit on the account, but I'm not sure that even happened. After I hear back about my first egg retrieval I'll be calling them again to get a detailed account report to explain where we stand.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
The monitoring portion experience was really hit or miss. Sometimes I'd go in right when they'd open and have only a few people in front of me in line, and sometime's I'd go in and there'd be 25 people there. They only see people from 7-9 (sometimes I was quoted 8:30) to ensure they get same day results back (which I understand), but they should have more staff available to get people in and out. With my job, sometimes I didn't have the option to be at work past 8am, which made it difficult. My first visit I got there around 7:20 (as I thought they opened at 7:15) and didn't make it to work until 8:40am. They do things so quickly that I wish they had a little more time to be more personable about your visit. On my 13th day of stimulants,I was greeted by the same limp-wristed handshake of a PA and her standardized questions ("How are you today? I'm ____ and I'll be doing your ultrasound today. How are the medications going?"), and at that point, I just felt like crying. I didn't feel like a person but a number, and I was already stressed and uninformed about why I was not ready for my trigger shot for egg retrieval, and the fact that she didn't even pretend to remember who I was, since I had just seen her less than 24 hours before, was frustrating.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
My insurance coverage is 90/10 after a $1500 deductible. I spent almost $1200 out of my HRA account for all of my visits before even starting the first IVF cycle. I was originally quoted around $2900 for my out of pocket portion, including a $1K non-billable piece. However, what I was quoted as my coinsurance and remaining deductible was not correct. It should have been more around $1900. At this point, instead of correcting it before making the payment to start my treatment, they told me to just pay the $1K non-billable and they'll bill the rest, so I'll just owe a balance at the end. I was encouraged to pay for my medications out of pocket versus using insurance as they'd likely jack up the price on the meds, and I only have a $15K lifetime maximum on infertility treatments. The total cost of my medications was $2400 purchased from SMP Pharmacy.
What specific things went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic

Describe the specific things that went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
1. Double billed for services. Have not received refund check. 2. Asked to pay more for services based on what they found as my deductible contributions as of that date. 3. Quoted strange figures related to a negative "balance" on my account. (I think they used my payment for the Non-Billable portion of the IVF treatments to start paying bills for services).

We think our first doctor Dr. Whelan performed an unnecessary surgery which caused uterine fibroids...we didn't receive enough personal attention, and felt like he didn't really care if we succeeded. Many times the prognosis was pessimistic, and we weren't given many options. They were quick to recommend surrogacy.
Weakness: Dr Whelan advised a surgical procedure prior to our first frozen embryo transfer. We regret listening to him...We do not trust this clinic, and would caution against. Strengths: They have multiple doctors on staff, however, you do not get to meet or consult with them...The nurses have good bedside manner, and generally respond quickly to emailed questions through their portal.
How was your experience with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
We think our first doctor Dr. Whelan performed an unnecessary surgery which caused uterine fibroids, which became the reason we could not get pregnant. The final doctor, Dr. Richard Wang is knowledgeable and was the founder of Reach clinic. But we didn't receive enough personal attention, and felt like he didn't really care if we succeeded. Many times the prognosis was pessimistic, and we weren't given many options. They were quick to recommend surrogacy. Overall, we were disappointed not just in the outcome, but in the way we were treated as just another number. We would have appreciated more second opinions and communications.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
Always get a second, and third, and maybe fourth opinion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
We received information and instructions, but we had to consistently request and remind to get all answers. We would have liked more consultations because we often felt on our own. We did not achieve any success, and often felt like no one really cared or tried hard enough.
Describe the protocols Joseph Whelan used in your cycles at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Dr Whelan suggested a hysteroscopy to remove a polyp, which became uterine adhesions called Ashermans. We regret listening to him because we think this ultimately caused us not to become pregnant. We wish we had proceeded with at least a few FETs before considering surgery. We do not trust this clinic, and blame them for this. We has 2 stimulated egg retrievals, which were then placed in cryo-preservations. We had 4 frozen embryo transfers and 1 fresh embryo transfer. We tried Embryoglue, which is Hyaluronic Acid injected during the transfers to help with embryo implantation.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
The nurses have good bedside manner, and generally respond quickly to emailed questions through their portal. But we did not have a primary nurse, and the information had to be asked for, rather than provided up front. Overall, the nursing staff was generally good.
Describe your experience with REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Weakness: Dr Whelan advised a surgical procedure prior to our first frozen embryo transfer. We regret listening to him. This caused uterine adhesions and Asherman's syndrome, which kept us from achieving pregnancy during all subsequent transfers. We should have tried a few transfers before surgery. We do not trust this clinic, and would caution against. Strengths: They have multiple doctors on staff, however, you do not get to meet or consult with them
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Cost was around $35k total, but two surgeries were extra $2k due to lack of availability in the in-house surgical room. Medications were always extra.
Describe Joseph Whelan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
We always did single embryo transfer, with the best quality embryo available each time.
What specific things went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to consider drug intolerance
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
Describe the specific things that went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
We had to be very pro-active with this clinic. Asking tons of questions and requesting instructions. Many times, we had wrong procedures scheduled or medications which would have been an allergy problem.

I don't think he [Dr. Whelan] could pick me out of a crowd or remembered my case, he would have to read my file before he saw us and focused on the treatment and not what would work best for me as a patient...he didn't think outside the box and gave up quickly on us. We went from "you have a 70-80% chance of IVF working on the first cycle" to (two cycles later), "you most likely won't ever have biological children of our own"
Strengths: There are a lot of doctors and nurses so you could get there first thing in the morning for monitoring, they [REACH] had nice facilities. They had information and tips to give to patients which was helpful, they knew what questions I was most likely to ask. Weaknesses: HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE billing department, even if my experience with the doctors and nurses were amazing, I would think twice about continuing to use them because their billing department is such a nightmare.
How was your experience with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
He had too many patients and didn't take a one-on-one approach, he didn't think outside the box and gave up quickly on us. We went from "you have a 70-80% chance of IVF working on the first cycle" to (two cycles later), "you most likely won't ever have biological children of our own" and was recommending we look into donor eggs or embryos. I think he is fully capable and intelligent, but the treatments were a little to one size fits all. If you are a difficult case, I wouldn't recommend him.

IVF cycle follistim, HGH, cetrotide and menopur. Only PIO to prep for a fresh transfer. He didn't share is rationale for that treatment cycle.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
There were many, I don't think I really knew any of them or that they really knew me. They were nice enough I guess, but had too many patients.

They have way too many patients, there were visits where I waited more than 2 hours to be seen. My doctor was even almost an hour late to my 7am surgery. Treatments are too generic, didn't feel like they took their time with me, they had to stick to a schedule.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
It depended, so days were horrible and the wait was an hour or more, other days it wasn't bad. If I got there right when the doors opened it really didn't impact my day. Too many patients.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
I don't remember costs.
Describe Joseph Whelan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
We didn't have that discussion because we didn't have enough strong embryos.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
They got dates incorrect for my treatment and I was traveling out of town. Luckily there was a fertility clinic I could go to where I was traveling to be monitored. They have sent me incorrect instructions on treatment or sent me someone else's treatment information.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
He knows what he’s talking about. If he says IVF is your best bet, he’s not out to get your money. He told us we could continue to try IUI and we would hopefully get pregnant eventually if that’s the way we wanted to go but that IVF was really what I needed and he was right.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. Whelan always takes time to meet with me, even if I am not actively going through fertility treatments, to discuss my concerns about future cycles or what has gone wrong with past cycle
Describe the protocols Joseph Whelan used in your cycles at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
We did an egg retrieval with a freeze-all. I have PCOS but according to Dr. Whelan, my brain also doesn’t communicate properly with my hormones. He said attempting to go directly into a fresh transfer would be too confusing for my system and I would likely not get pregnant. We did a freeze all and went back on birth control to start a FET and managed to get pregnant the first FET round.
Describe your experience with your nurse at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Melissa)
Melissa, our primary nurse, is a truly calming force and a wonderful nurse. She always takes time to talk to me when I’m stressed or have questions and never makes me feel like I’m too needy. Speaking to her is always reassuring to me. However, lately she has not been the nurse I have been dealing with. I will get calls from OTHER doctor’s nurses who I feel don’t really know who I am and are just reading off of papers. It’s almost never the same nurse so I constantly feel like I have to explain what was told to me by someone else to get questions answered. And one time, a nurse forgot to call me with instructions until I called looking for them because she is not my doctors nurse. If Melissa is no longer Dr. Whelan’s main nurse, they need to hire a new one that is just for his team so the communication gets better.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
I do not remember my egg retrieval costs but my last FET was approximately $7500
Describe Joseph Whelan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
My first FET, I had been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half with no success, not even a chemical pregnancy. Dr. Whelan knew how desperate we were to get pregnant and allowed us to transfer two embryos despite being 25 at the time. This past FET cycle, he said I could choose again whether to do two embryos or an eSET and I choose eSET as I now have a living child and was not as comfortable with the prospect of twins. This cycle was unsuccessful and our next FET we will be transferring two again, with his blessing

Dr. Whelan was very through from our first meeting with him and spent as much time with us as required. We never felt rushed or that he wasn't willing to answer our questions. Our experience with Dr. Whelan was that at times we may have had to wait a bit to see him, but he would spend as much time with us as we needed. His approach is very factual and realistic, which my husband and I appreciated...many times at follow up appointments, we would have the same conversations or information provided. For some patients that may not be as clear on the process/issue/procedures, this may be helpful but it left me feeling at times as if I was just a "case" and not a person.
REACH is a very busy clinic. They primarily use an online portal for communication which can be accessed at any time and is efficient. Once you start a cycle, your appointments are very regimented. REACH does have an onsite surgery clinic and IVF lab so most of your procedures will be done there. The staff in the onsite surgery facility are awesome and so caring. My main challenge was with the billing department as the invoices do not contain details of what is being billed; however, this improved throughout our time at REACH.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
If you are a patient at REACH, do not expect to see your primary doctor once you start monitoring as they work as a team on rotation for monitoring. Your primary doctor will perform your embryo transfers and other procedures but may not perform your egg retrieval depending on your scheduled retrieval date. In addition, most of your communication once you start your cycle will go through your nursing team.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
When ever we met with Dr. Whelan, both my husband and I were satisfied with our experience. Dr. Whelan was very through from our first meeting with him and spent as much time with us as required. We never felt rushed or that he wasn't willing to answer our questions. My feeling is because REACH is such a busy practice, many times at follow up appointments, we would have the same conversations or information provided. For some patients that may not be as clear on the process/issue/procedures, this may be helpful but it left me feeling at times as if I was just a "case" and not a person. Additionally, at times the nurse coordinators weren't completely informed of our discussions with Dr. Whelan which would at times lead to confusion about the plan of treatment.
Describe the protocols Joseph Whelan used in your cycles at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
IVF cycle # 1: oral BC suppression, gonal-f, low dose hcg, cetrotide and ovidrel trigger. Resulted in 10 eggs retrieved, 7 fertilized with ICSI, At time of Day 5 transfer, only 1 early blastocyst and 1 morula remained; both were transferred. Positive pregnancy of 1 embryo resulting in miscarriage at approximately 9 weeks. IVF cycle #2: oral BC suppression, gonal-f, low dose hcg, omnitrope (for entire stim cycle), cetrotide and ovidrel trigger. Resulted in 14 eggs retrieved (all 14 mature) and fertilized via ICSI. At Day 5, 2 hatching blastocysts were transferred. 2 were watched for continued growth but arrested and were not frozen. Positive pregnancy of 1 embryo.
Describe your experience with your nurse at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Melissa)
The nursing staff at REACH was available via the portal or triage line and responsive. You will be assigned a primary team based on your physician, however, at times you may be contacted by other staff. Melissa and Veronica work primarily with Dr. Whelan and would always respond to my questions (even small ones) within the same day. Melissa is very organized and in fact, during our first cycle, Dr. Whelan advised we could start the process the same day we were in for a follow up appointment. She worked in my saline sonogram, consent review, lab work, injection training and ordered meds all while we were in the office that day so that we didn't have to come back or delay the cycle. We were extremely grateful she made it work for us!

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Monitoring appointments will be done from 7-10am and you can go in at any time during that window. If you arrive at 7am there will be a line but REACH is very efficient at moving people through who are there for monitoring. I did not feel that this approach ruined my schedule as I typically could get in and out very quickly first thing in the morning.

We started with Clomid the lowest dosage and ovidrel shot. He [Dr Joseph Whelan] mentioned that he started with the lowest dosage to try and control how many eggs were released and decrease the chance of multiples as best he could. I really appreciated this. We did 3 IUIs which was what he recommended before IVF. Fortunately we were successful with the 3rd IUI. With Each IUI he adjusted the timing of the shot and IUI procedure in accordance with the information he gathered from blood tests.
Reach was Amazing. I always joked that they deal with women who are on a lot of hormones so they have to be sensitive. But they went above and beyond for me. At one point I was supposed to have a Ovidrel shot on a Sunday and unfortunately the mail order pharmacy messed up and i didn't get it. Reach went out of their way to find the Pharmaceutical rep and made them bring what i needed to my house! And this was the cycle that was successful. So if it hadn't been for the amazing staff at Reach providing amazing service, I wouldn't have had my son.
How was your experience with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. Whelan was a great doctor. He explained the science behind everything and outlined what to expect each time we saw him. I would say if you are looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear, that would not be him. He tells you the facts in a professional and compassionate way, and communicated the understanding as to what he thought. He was a great doctor and made me feel extremely comfortable to leave my care in his hands.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
Ask questions if you do not understand. He will explain things until you understand them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
He explained all of the science behind the treatments. And also explained that each treatment was diagnostic and we learn from each one. He set expectations appropriately and answered all of my questions so that I could understand.

Dr. Whelan made me a personalized fertility plan and checked in with us often. He asked personal questions that made us feel cared about...He is blunt and gives you details without sugar coating which is appreciated...walked us through the process and was patient with us...know that he does have your best interest in mind.
This clinic [REACH] is well known and has opened a second location that’s much more convenient. I believe some communication could be a little better but they still are great. The clinic location in downtown is a little outdated but the new location is very nice...I’ve only worked with the nurses over messenger with setting up future appointments and blood draws but they’ve been very kind and understanding.

He is blunt and gives you details without sugar coating which is appreciated. We have been seeing him since Covid so all of our visits with him have been virtual but have still felt personal. He [Dr. Joseph Whelan] pulled up our information and went through every single number with us laid out all of our options and answered questions candidly. He wasn’t pushy and discussed all options with us. We didn’t feel rushed at any point while talking to him...We began our treatment with multiple tests and met with [him] to go over the results. We began our treatment with multiple tests and met with Dr. Whelan to go over the results. He laid out multiple options based on the results. Original testing showed our sperm numbers slightly low but so we decided to try IUI. When the first one failed we re-evaluated and determined the next step of IVF

Dr. Whelan met with us and was very explanatory, but he was very quick to diagnose that we should move straight to IVF. Our conversation felt surgical...There weren’t many instances where we had strong interaction with Dr. Whelan. He was polite, but we felt overwhelmed with information and like we were just one couple on the conveyer belt. We asked questions, but often the information that we received was confusing. It was hard to get a good understanding of what we were facing, and we never quite felt heard.
[REACH] is a well-known clinic. They are expensive and sometimes it feels as if they are just trying to get your money. We felt like we had so much that we didn’t know and we didn’t ever get a firm grasp on the realities of ur diagnosis. They were organized and have a great online system...The nursing staff was similar to Dr. Whelan— it felt clinical or surgical with the manner that they treated us. Not neglectful, but I didn’t feel well-served.

He [Dr. Joseph Whelan] has a good bedside manner. He was very informative and explained everything in detail so that we could understand it. He explained all of the procedures and reasons behind doing them. We never left feeling confused or let down.... Husband and I both were tested in the beginning. Husband’s sperm was tested for mobility. I had a dye test done on my uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries to make sure nothing was blocking the eggs from reaching the sperm. We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We had been trying to conceive for 6 years prior. Dr. Whelan recommended IVF.
[REACH is] Very organized with the exception of the billing department. They waited too long to bill my insurance and I got a bill exactly one year later. Was not happy about it. Found out they also messed up the numbers on my file and then tried telling me that my insurance denied them. Not true.... They [the nursing staff] had very good bedside manners. Very compassionate. Very informative.

Dr. Whelan personally preformed all of our ultrasounds while we were monitoring our eggs before retreaval. He also took time to make sure we understood exactly what was happening and to be expected...was very thorough with our visits! He took time to address any questions and made sure we understood exactly what was happening and what to expect. I trust Dr. Whelan 100% in the care that he gave us and would be happy to be under his care again in the future.
Nurse/provider care [at REACH] is amazing however the front staff could use a little help with communication skills and people person skills. Billing Department is a little impersonal as well. I feel like because the office is so busy they have become immune to the worries of the patients that come in that office. Just don't let the front staff and billing Department ruin your feelings towards the medical staff...Our nurse was very thorough and always offered her help with any questions or concerns we had

He [Dr. Joseph Whelen] treated me like a human and explained everything to me but I felt very rushed like he had other patients waiting and he just kept suggesting that I go straight to IVF and I felt I'm young and want to find out to root of my problem...I felt as if everything wasn't explained to me and IVF seemed so daunting to me. I needed more time to understand what the process was. He is very nice though but I feel too many patients are booked at once.
Well they [nurses at REACH Charlotte] forgot to call in my prescription before my IUI's and also I called over five times to have my paperwork switched to my gyno with no response...Strengths would be niceness but weakness's would be office flow of paperwork and organization. The financial lady is even a bit mean. Returning phone calls can be a nightmare...We did four IUI's but I don't recall the medicine used except that I gave myself a shot in the stomach theee days straight

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Whelan listened to my concerns and my opinions and informed me with information that I was unaware of. He told me everything that the other fertility Dr. Did not. He gained my trust...very attentive person who was very straight forward with me. He gave me the pros and cons. He gave me the chance to think everything over before I decided to make a decision. He never tried to push me to make a decision.
Front desk administrators staff [at REACH] needs to communicate with each other more. Pay more attention when making appointments. Clinical staffs are pretty good with getting patients back to see the Drs. in a timely fashion...Appointment time was scheduled wrong. Was given the wrong appointment time...[nurse was] Very nice and understanding. Explanation was very thorough and precise...

He [Dr. Joseph Whelan] took as much time as I needed to discuss everything...He is a little odd at first glance but very very smart and I honestly felt like he was completely invested in helping my husband and I have a baby. His attitude helped me focus and get through treatment...He was very intent on preventing OHSS during my IVF cycle because I had PCOS, and indeed I did not get OHSS...
They [REACH] offer before-work drop ins for monitoring and generally are on time for appointments during working hours. They do not map cycles around the clinic schedule like some clinics, and are EXTREMELY responsive on the patient portal...[nurses are] Very efficient and clinical, they ALWAYS responded to my questions the same day...$17,500 for egg retrieval and FET costs including medications....

He [Dr. Joseph Whelan] took as much time as we needed to answer all our questions and made sure we understood the protocol...He was great at explaining what PCOS was and how it affected my health overall. He listened to our concerns and modified treatment as we went through the process. The only downside was he was usually running at least 45 minutes late...Plan on an extra hour or so for your appointment. He is very thorough which means he runs long on his appointments.
The financial woman Diane [at REACH] was terrible. We almost did not proceed with Ivf because she was so incompetent. Success w/ Doc Too early to know
We felt as if we were human because he [Dr. Joseph Whelan] constantly knew our story, and has continued to walk beside us as we make all of our own decisions in the options that he has given us. He is very knowledgeable and will give you honest advise.... My husband was diagnosed with Klinefelter syndrome from Dr. DeBord (a urologist in Concord, NC). This is a genetic syndrome that causes infertility. Our only option is now IVF.
I think this clinic [REACH- Charlotte] is very focused on the goal to help patients grow their family. They genuinely care for you as a person/couple, and they want to support you throughout your journey. This season of life is hard and this clinic has made it easier to accept that we are struggling through infertility. A weakness would be the cost, and I know there isn't much they can do about that. It is truly the only downfall to having to have an IVF treatment at this clinic
How was your experience with Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
From the moment we became patients at REACH we felt like family. We have always been well taken care of and all of our questions have been answered appropriately. We trust this clinic and would recommend it to anyone.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Whelan at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic)?
Know that you are there to figure out your journey to growing your family. Dr. Whelan is honest, but kind. He wants to do what is safe and best for you.

Most of my costs have been fully covered because we have only completed the testing portion of our infertility. IVF is our next step and our insurance will not cover it. We are struggling to figure out where we will find the funds.
Describe Joseph Whelan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at REACH (Care Fertility Network clinic).
Our doctor prefers eSET due to the higher risks with multiple embryo transfer.

The cost of the services are not bad. We are not able to do back to back IUIs because of insurance purposes. Our health insured does not cover anything related to infertility; which is not the clinic fault.

Dr Whelan cares about his patients. He has a very calm and nice way of explaining. He always took the time needed to answer all our questions. When Dr Whelan conducted the ultrasounds himself, they took mucher longer because he would show and explain us every detail. This was wonderful...always cared a lot. Dr Whelan always took a lot of time for each appointment, especially the ultrasounds.
Reach was very flexible on the appointments. We got the first appointment in between 2 weeks when we have first called them. It is very convenient that they have multiple locations so that you don't have to go to uptown all the time...Dr Whelan and his team always cared a lot.
