Dr. Nguyen is very compassionate, soft spoken and kind. She seems to genuinely care about her patients. She will answer any questions you have and re-answer in another way if you do not understand. As she is a doctor, she has to be precautions and weigh the risk of certain things, which can be frustrating if you do not agree with the course of action. Overall Dr. Nguyen is a lovely and intelligent doctor who treats you with respect.

Advocate for yourself. Some times your gut feeling and your wants outweigh “studies.”

The first 5 months we used Clomid and letrozole to help aid in pregnancy, which was not successful. I did also use estrace tablets both vaginally and by mouth I decided to skip IUI and move straight to IVF. We continued with the treatment plan to retrieve my eggs. I then did estradiol injections every 3 days. After the first transfer they added progesterone injections daily. I’m still currently using both

The monitoring appointments were from 7 AM to 9:15 AM. I found that if you call with enough days notice you could get the exact slot that you needed to fit your schedule. The ultrasound technicians were fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about Mindy and Juliana. They were absolutely fantastic, professional, and caring.

We like Dr. Nguyen because we got pregnant! In the first meeting, she lays out the pros and cons of IVF. She informs us of sufficient information about IVF, which helps us to decide to embark on this journey. During the treatment, she is the brain behind every step. There are clear instructions for us at every stage. More importantly, she educates us on the reason why we are doing it This helps us to go through many injections and pills. The whole process is very efficient. She did not let us waste any time. The retrietval to transfer processes are well-timed and well planned. We get a positive pregnancy result even earlier than we expected. In summary, if you choose to have Dr. Nguyen as your fertility doctor, you are in good hands. The drawback is that the whole process lacks human interaction, which may be due to COVID-19. Thus, if you plan to have IVF treatment in Shady grove fertility center, you need to prepare yourself to learn how to communicate mainly through the patient portals and messaging system. With that being said, the result is the most important. We feel that Shady Grove fertility and Dr. Nguyen offers efficient, professional, expert, and result-driven medical services to a couple that dreams of having a baby of their own.

If you plan to have IVF treatment in Shady grove fertility center, you need to prepare yourself to learn how to communicate mainly through the patient portals and messaging system. Also, you need to follow the doctor's instructions closely no matter how hard it is.

She gave me birth control pills to regulate the period. Then she gives Gonal Rff pens to grow multiple eggs at the same time. Then I have a trigger shot before the egg retrieval. After egg retrieval, we have embryo testing to eliminate unviable embryos. Then she froze the embryos. Meanwhile, I am getting shots for preparing the uterus linings. Once it was ready, we had embryo transfer, which results in a positive pregnancy.

About $27500 without medication, which is about $5000.

I agree with single embryo transfer. It is good for both mother and baby.

Dr. Nguyen is very kind. She was able to remain calm and kind during tough conversations. I want to highlight that I truly believe she cares for my husband and I along with her other patients. However, I just learned after a year after my persistent question asking that I am diagnosed with PCOS. For the last year, I was told I was diagnosed with “Unexplained infertility.” I can recall our last conversation before the most recent where I was, “fed up” and discouraged that “nothing was wrong” but I was still unable to conceive and maintain a pregnancy. Our doctor told me, “rest assured just because you are diagnosed with Unexplained infertility does not mean nothing is wrong. Something is wrong, we just do not know what.” She continued to say that IVF would be our best bet since we do not know if fertilization is occurring. This was hard to swallow, but I accepted it. Until I did not. I asked my nurses many questions after researching. I am not a doctor, but I knew in my heart there had to be something. It may have been hope, but it was indeed something! After engaging in a telehealth follow up visit, for all of my questions. I was informed I met two of the major criteria for PCOS. I was told that through all the information this is something I may have missed her talking about. It is not. This journey is many things, and yes traumatic being one of the synonyms to describe it, however, for the last year I’ve researched and researched Unexplained infertility. I would have 150 percent remembered if I was diagnosed with PCOS from the beginning. In saying all of this, our doctor is very kind, I believe my chart may have been misinterpreted and I was misinformed. I know she sees many patients, I know feel like she did not “see me” as much as I thought she did. Nonetheless, it does not take away from the fact we are happy to know “a reason” now, and we will continue to go to her for treatment. Because despite how I feel, I feel “warm” when talking to her. I believe she truly does care, and it may have just been a mistake (a big one), but I believe in grace. I appreciate her as a clinician nonetheless.

Ask questions! Many many questions and if you feel something is not right, voice that. We may not be doctors, but we are our biggest advocates.

In the beginning of our fertility journey, I was diagnosed with “Unexplained Infertility.” Our doctor informed us that, “I just needed a boost.” This is why I began clomid and then Letrozole each for one cycle. This would help to know if I was developing follicles (I was) and how many. It would also help me ovulate, to give me that boost. I have had two cycles, and two negative pregnancy tests. She then informed us that IUI would be unsuccessful as it would produce only an 8% success rate and suggested IVF. Fast forward to being diagnosed with PCOS...she now believes timed cycles or IUI would be successful.

At the time of service, I had Aetna insurance which I utilized for monitoring, ultrasounds medications (with the exception of the trigger shot), and follow up visit for pregnancy test. I only had to pay a co-pay. IUI and IVF will not be covered. I have also lost my job as a school based therapist due to Covid-19 and will lose my health benefits on April 30th.

From the very first time I met her, Dr. Nguyen made me feel like I could conquer the world. She fully explained all initial diagnostic procedures and made sure I understood what they were and why they were needed. When I told her my biggest fear was doing all the tests and having it come back as unexplained infertility, she said “it might, and if it does, we can treat that too.” I felt so confident after that initial meeting. Unfortunately my results came back as low AMH/high FSH and she had to explain that the chances of my getting pregnant on my own and even using my own eggs for IVF were not good and that we should think about how we’d like to move forward. By some miracle I ended up getting pregnant shortly after that—however, that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage at 9-1/2 weeks. Dr. Nguyen called me after I informed her office of my miscarriage to check in and see how I was doing. She broached the subject of next steps only after she was certain I was alright—she even sent me information for counselors who could help me through such an emotional time. At our next meeting, she explained again that my chances of getting pregnant on my own or an IVF cycle with my own eggs was not likely given my hormone levels however, since I was fortunate enough to have infertility coverage through my insurance at my job, she was willing to try. She told us, “I want to give you the best shot at having a baby, but I also want to be mindful of the insurance coverage you have and the financial strain of these procedures.” I’ve never once had a doctor who was concerned about a patient’s financing! We tried one cycle of IVF which had to be adjusted to an IUI cycle due to my ovaries not responding to the meds. That cycle, unfortunately, ended with a negative pregnancy test. Our next step is IVF with donor eggs—which will not be covered by my insurance.

I think the advice I would give to anyone is to ask as many questions as you can think of! Dr. Nguyen is very knowledgeable and patient and caring and is happy to answer any questions and address any concerns.

I was on Lupron for about 7 days and then was on menopur and gonal-f with an HCG trigger shot. With my hormone levels, my body did not react as other people’s would have and I only had one mature follicle by the time retrieval would have occurred. Because of this, I was switched to an IUI cycle as Dr. Nguyen did not think it was prudent to do retrieval for only one egg—which I agreed. The main reason she let me even go through with it was because my insurance was covering the bulk of the process and I didn’t want to not try it and then always wonder if it would have worked.

My insurance thankfully covered a lot of the costs or partially covered. The meds were very expensive (I think $7k if I ordered through one of the pharmacies they recommended) so I ordered from overseas and it cost half that amount (but not covered by insurance).

No comment applicable for me currently, but she is in favor of single embryo transfer.

I have not had any additional experience with Dr. Nguyen yet except for diagnostic testing but she was flexible with working with my limited insurance and allowed me to move some testing back until I felt comfortable. I did feel that she pushed IVF over IUI or timed cycles without having all the diagnostic information.

Make sure to do your own research and have an idea of what type of treatment plan works for you. Shady grove is a huge machine like clinic so they have pre-prescribed plans the doctors follow. Don't be afraid to ask for what you need.

So far I've only had diagnostic testing with Dr. Nguyen but she seems very efficient.

The planned cycle for IUI was quoted at $2400 out of pocket without insurance which we will be completing next month. We paid $300 for a genetic screen, $400 for husband's initial bloodwork (but without insurance) and $800 for an HSG (with insurance and performed at shady grove)

Dr. Nguyen explained everything in a way to help me understand a little better and she took plenty of time to answer my questions. Also, after I lost my pregnancy, Dr. Nguyen called me to check on me which I appreciated so much. She let me know they were here for me when I was ready to start up again. I was having a tough time with my schedule (when I decided to go for my second consultation) and Dr. Nguyen actually agreed to have my second consultation over the phone. I just really think the world of her ... actully all of the doctors that I’ve met at Shady Grove were great!

I actually only had one cycle with Dr. Nguyen. She upped the dosage of clomid and put me immediately on progesterone after my iui. I became pregnant with that iui.

I was lucky in that my insurance covered the iui. I just To fulfill my co pays until I reached my out of pocket max. Ivf, however, is not covered and I am waiting to hear from someone from finance to go over prices. One positive thing is the ivf, I believe, is guaranteed and if you do not conceive, I believe you are reimbursed. I need to fully confirm that but that is what I heard on the radio advertisement for sgf.

I just loved that Dr. Nguyen didn’t waste any time and she took all precautions for me. The previous practice I went to tested my blood the week following iui to decide whether or not I would need progesterone ... my levels were good after my first iui so they never put me on progesterone and never tested me again. I loved that Dr. Nguyen said it cannot hurt to take the progesterone - we won’t waste that week following your Iui. It could have been the missing link to those three failed iuis with the previous practice!

Dr. Kara Nguyen is a very caring and compassionate Dr. When we went for our initial consultation she took a lot of time to explain my low amh results. I told her I wanted to be pregnant before the end of summer (consultation was in April) and she said we can do that. I still felt skeptical and scared to get my hopes up after almost 4 years of infertility but she delivered on that (got my positive pregnancy test in August). Also when my fresh transfer got cancelled and changed to a freeze all because of my progesterone level before my retrieval, I cried and she called me to make sure I understood why and make sure I was okay. Also, when she called to tell me I was pregnant, I could tell she was genuinely happy and excited for me.

Don't be afraid to go and do a consultation. I know a IVF sounds really scary but Dr. Kara Nguyen will explain everything and have a plan for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions!

We first tried 1 IUI because my insurance covered it. We were skeptical it would work due to my husband's low count and wondered if it was worth trying but also nervous about going straight to IVF. Dr. Kara Nguyen said it wouldn't hurt to try one IUI and the ultrasounds and bloodwork from that would be helpful in planning the IVF so it wouldn't be a complete waste if it didn't work. IUI cycle we did 100 mg Clomid on cycle days 3-7 and were supposed to do the trigger shot of Ovidrel on day 10 but that got pushed back until day 13 because of follicle size. Received negative pregnancy test after IUI. Started IVF on next cycle. Birth control pills for 15 days, Lupron (2.8cc) and birth control pills for 3 days, Lupron for 9 days, Follistim 300iU and Menopur 75iU for 14 days then Trigger shot and Egg Retrieval. My Follistim and Menopur ended up getting adjusted and my egg retrieval was pushed back because my follicles were growing slower and they wanted to have as many mature as possible. Also my progesterone got too high during the end of my stims so my cycle was switched to a freeze all and then an FET for the best chance of implantation.

IUI was covered by my insurance but cost about $180. IVF shared risk (up to 6 cycles including cryopreservation and FET's) after income discount was $16,500. IVF medications were about $4,600.

My doctor strongly encouraged only transferring 1 embryo. We didn't even really have the option of transferring multiple. I think it depends on your diagnosis, but the explanation I was given was that transferring multiple didn't really increase the chance of implantation but it did increase the risk of multiples which would be a high risk pregnancy.

We have been through a lot of ups and downs in Dr. Nguyen's care. On the compassion scale she gets a 10 out of 10 every time. I have needed to seek outside resources to better explain protocols at times, but she does a great job of explaining the basics and nurse consults have always filled in the gaps. She is not one to push for excessive testing when not called for, but does listen and supports patients needs. She is a very scrupulous and skilled provider.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. They will get answered one way or another in her office. You're in good hands so relax:)

Monitoring hours - 7am to 9am, M-Fri STAT blood drawn at onsite clinic, transitioning toward in office blood draws. (I'm a tough blood draw so very happy to go to seasoned phlebotomists;) Weekend monitoring done at Harrisburg Hospital and only time you will have an ultrasound performed by non-RMA staff (between 7am-9:30am) Bloodwork results and medication adjustments provided same day by nursing staff (usually between 2:30 to 3:30). Dr Nguyen will generally call with initial Beta results or if complications occur. IUI 1 & 2- Day 3 baseline u/s & E2, LH & Prog. bloodwork, clomid (can't remember when started, probably Day 2 or 3). Monitoring Day 9 (or perhaps earlier) thru LH surge, Ovidrel trigger night before IUI. Semen sample taken to office 45 minutes prior to IUI procedure for processing. Private room available for men if traveling a distance for procedure. Done during monitoring hours in a relaxing room. Beta hCG, E2 and Progesterone levels tested 9DPO. If positive, Beta and hormone levels taken every two to three day at least twice more. If normal- U/S follow up week 5 or 6 through 9 when referred back to OB. If abnormal- options for termination discussed or consulted through miscarriage. If negative, IUI 2 Beta was positive, but slow rising and indicative of possible ectopic implantation. In addition to Beta monitoring, had a diagnostic transvaginal u/s at 6 weeks, however Beta levels were too low to confirm place of implantation, tubes appeared normal. Pregnancy was terminated with Methotrexate injection and Beta was followed to 0. Liver panel and CBC was monitored prior to and after in office injection by nurse. IVF- estrogen primer protocol for low responders selected due to maternal age and unexplained infertility history (just turned 38 that month). Counseled to have PGS testing also due to age and hx-- Select CCS (Comprehensive Chromosome Screening). Monitored cycle prior to Stims to start estrace a week or two before Day 1. Day 2 AM u/s & bloodwork (E2/LH/Prog./FSH?)/PM first dose Gonal f & low dose hCG subcutaneous injections. Monitoring continued every other day to daily with medication adjustments, cetrotide added sometime around day 7-9 to suppress ovulation, hCG injection trigger 2 nights prior to retrieval with bloodwork monitoring the following AM to confirm it was administered properly. Egg Retrieval and Embryo transfer procedures are preformed at the King of Prussia surgical center NE of Philadelphia (1.5 hr from Harrisburg). ER scheduled generally before 9 am. Given a report of egg count post procedure after anesthesia recovery. Restart estrace (vaginally), start steriod, antibiotic, and crinone (progesterone vaginal gel). Fresh embryo transfer scheduled for same time as ER on Day6 (if embryos make it to blastocyst stage by Day 5 and test euploid). Given report by embryology Day1, Day3 and Day5. Reports- 21 eggs retrieved, 17 fertilized normally by Day1, 10 Day3 with normal cleavage, 3 Day5 blastocyst tested- 1 euploid, 2 Day6 blastocyst tested, both euploid and frozen. Day6 fresh transfer (It's a girl!) (No anesthesia necessary, but have to drink 50-60oz water starting 1.5 hour prior to procedure. Very uncomfortable!) Beta follow up was normal. Embryo measured normal week6Day0 u/s. Heartbeat detected in week 7 Day 0 u/s. Continued monitoring through week9 and referred back to OB. Was told to follow up with NT scan and amniocentesis, but no further genetic screening was necessary due to PGS. We ignored Dr. Nguyen's advice and did not have an NT scan done between 12-14 weeks, thinking we had it covered on the genetic defect front and I was eating well/taking prenatals so not overly concerned about NTD. Unfortunately at our week 19 anatomy scan our daughter was diagnosed with Exencephaly a fatal NTD. Amniocentesis results indicated that karyotype was also normal. It was a "fluke" developmental defect. Follow your RE's advice, get the NT scan. FET cycles- Dr. Nguyen allowed me the choice of having a synthetic or natural cycle (with estrogen primer control of ovulation or without estrogen) I opted both cycles for the greater predictability of synthetic cycle. Estrace started orally Day2 in the PM after AM u/s and bloodwork- taken AM & PM, dose upped then taken back down at ovulation. Progesterone in oil intramuscular shots started evening of ovulation (1/2cc) as well as steroid (7days). Progesterone upped to 1cc until Beta and continued to 10 weeks is positive. Both cycles failed so I discontinued PIO and estrace day of Beta. Have consulted with Dr. Nguyen on next possible steps- Another stim cycle with either same estrogen primer protocol or a lupron microflare with PGS-- both are low responder protocols. My AMH has dropped from 2015 (2.27) to this September (1.32). Egg quality is a major concern, but Dr. Nguyen believes I will have a similar outcome to my first IVF cycle. Genetic screening protocols are changing in their lab, so we will not have the option for fresh cycle transfer, but will have both chromosome and karyotype testing performed for frozen transfer. She is also willing to perform an endo/scratch the cycle prior to our next transfer because we have had two implantation failures with euploid embryos. We may choose to have further immunological testing done prior to our next cycle due to our multiple losses (a blighted ovum- spontaneous conception, a presumed ectopic with IUI and our daughter's NTD, also euploid), and am in the process of looking into reproductive immunologists to work in consult with Dr. Nguyen. We are still unsure if we how far we will pursue further testing.

IUI cycle- $1,200 includes bloodwork through first Beta, u/s monitoring and IUI procedure Does not include medication- Clomid covered by my insurance with copay. Ovidrel- ~ $100 including shipping w/pharmacy discount through RMA (Note: options are changing in 2017 due to new PGS protocols) IVF Multicycle Option w/RMAid 7.5% discount & Select CCS-~ $13,400 includes Dr. & Nurse consults mock embryo transfer (cycle prior to stim), bloodwork through 1st Beta, monitoring, anesthesia, egg retrieval, ICSI, embryo culture/embryologist fees, fresh cycle embryo transfer, also covers one Frozen embryo transfer in the event that fresh cycle transfer cannot be performed, fresh transfer failure or loss of pregnancy if FET can be performed within a 9 month period. (We ended up not having to pay additional fees for our first FET after our loss at 21weeks post fresh transfer). I believe this may have also covered vitrification of frozen embryos. Additional costs- $3,000 genetic testing (covers 10+ (don't remember exact #) of embryo biopsies and can be transferred to multiple stim cycles if you do not meet the maximum number in any given cycle. We had 5 tested from our first IVF cycle, so will most likely not have to pay more for additional preimplantation genetic diagnosis in future cycles. I've talked with finance at RMA and this will be honored with the additional karyotype screening that will be added to the protocol in 2017. (Note- all RMA multi-cycle options will be changing in 2017 due to new PGD protocol. My next stim cycle will likely be a single IVF cycle paid "ala" carte by service since I will not need to pay additionally for PGD. I was quoted and expense of ~$12,000 in expected costs including one FET transfer. Stim cycle medications (gonal-f 900cc injections pens, cetrotide, low dose hCG, hCG trigger shot & pregnancy support (Crinone 8%) through 10 weeks- $~6,000.00 with 25% compassionate care discount through Freedom Pharmacy. I was not aware to shop around for Crinone coupons and additional discount programs. I could have saved more. Co-pay through insurance- ~$30 to 60 for estrace pills, medrol (steroid) and antibiotic FET cycle- $3,500 (without RMAid discount, but possible to qualify for financial aid through practice based on income/insurance coverage). Meds- estrace copay ~$20 -30, progesterone in oil intramuscular injections ~$40.00 for 30 day supply including shipping. Not covered procedures not covered in RMA plans- diagnostic exams and tests like maternal and paternal genetic screens, salinesonograms, hysteroscopy. I've had several genetic screens, (2) salinesonograms, (2) hysteroscopies including (1) endometrial polypectomy performed by Dr. Nguyen and all were covered by insurance. The RMA financial team and staff work hard to code procedures accurately, but in a way that will be accepted by most insurance carriers. I have a very restrictive HMO that does not cover any infertility treatment, but diagnostic screening and tests short of an infertility diagnosis are covered.

Dr. Nguyen is a very sweet and kind person. I felt like she was a friend throughout the process and not just my doctor. At my first ultrasound where we saw I was pregnant with twins, she gave me a big hug. I could tell she was genuinely excited for my husband and me.

I started on 300 IUs of Follistim and low dose hcg. This was decreased around day 3. Ganirelix was added in on day 5. I triggered on day 10 with Lupron and a higher dose of hcg.

She does a great job. Finally, a doc I could trust. If things like IUI don't work, I trust her judgment on next steps. She also got me off excessive medication that the other fertility doc had me on without really seeing me.

Have your questions ready and don't be afraid to ask.

I was reduced from 7.5 mg letrozole to 5 mg and got rid of the prednisone, naltrexone, and other drugs the other clinic had me on. I had not done IUI before, so we went that route. My husband had another semen analysis at my request and she suggested a supplement that appears to have increased his production 5X. He's not so borderline. First IUI, I had 3 follicles (8 measurable) after a lower dose of the letrozole and with going gluten free (my choice and family with celiac). Chemical pregnancy. 1st pregnancy after 1.5 years of trying. Second IUI two weeks exactly after chemical bleeding. Awaiting results. Same protocol. 2 follicles.

$1,800 IUI cycle before meds and insurance

My doctor was not only friendly but she spoke in a way both my husband and I will understand. She not only showed compassion but she truly made sure we didn't feel alone. Throughout our testing phases and still through our financial hurdle we are trying to overcome to receive actual IVF treatment, she has been thorough and sympathetic.

She is wonderful!

Due to the results of our genetic testing, IVF is our only option. She has explained why including risks of any other treatment along with the benefits IVF would provide once we undergo treatment.

She is soft-spoken and very knowledgeable. She takes time to be with you and comfort you. She had another appointment she was late for, but she knew I was frustrated and upset. She could not check my ovaries, but made sure I got the time the following day I could come in. She did not charge me for the visit.

Do not be afraid to ask questions, she will be honest and comforting.

Kara was very friendly and followed up after each failed IUI. I did find it kind of odd that we were offered the option to do IUI from the get-go, if we chose to. I also wondered about investigating more into the cause of my infertility. Overall I trust her experience and her bedside manner is great.

Ask plenty of questions.

First cycle we tried 50mg clomid, trigger shot and timed intercourse. Because the clomid dried me out, we moved to IUI. We did 100 mg and have different results each cycle (sometimes multiple eggs, sometimes 1). We also did trigger shot and progesterone. The third IUI my lining was thin so we added estrogen. All cycles were negative.

I had insurance. IVF was about $2500 with insurance, $4500 for meds and $1800 for freezing.

I was happy with my treatment, though my outcome of miscarriage was obviously heartbreaking. We are ready to try again and wouldn’t dream of going to any other doctor or clinic. She has a great manner and plan for us

Trust the plan and trust her. It’s scary but it can work

First cycle was just clomid at 100mg. No pregnancy but I did ovulate. We continued that 3 times with no success. 5th cycle was monitored and included a trigger shot of ovidrel along with the clomid 100mg. This ended with chemical pregnancy. 6th cycle same protocol and got pregnant but miscarried at 8 weeks

Not sure if the total cost

She took time to explain what was going on with me in terms that I was able to understand. She also is very supportive of my choices with treatment. She gives me hope that a successful pregnancy can happen for me.

Be open and honest with your feelings. Dr. Nguyen is very suppprtive and helps calms any fears you might have about treatment.

We did a cycle of clomid due To the less monitoring required while I am working. If this does not work we are moving to IVF when I am off of work for the summer and would be able to do all the appointments. Dr. Nguyen was very supportive of our idea and plan.

She really listened to our struggles and wanted to make a realistic plan for us, not for her or the clinic. She was encouraging each step of the way and even encouraged us to apply for a grant (which we received!).

Less time with other providers in the office. I wish she did the egg retrieval, I didn't care for that physician's personality and approach.

We went for an aggressive egg retrieval protocol due to my infertility issues. All injectables and worked with my insurance to find the best cost sensitive medications.

Dr Nguyen was very friendly and knowledgeable. She took the time to answer all my questions. When my only normal embryo did not survive thawing, she was very kind and empathetic. She spoke with me on the phone as long as I needed. My one negative, in hindsight, is that on the initial consult, she was too positive about possible outcomes. I was expecting things to go well and to have a baby in my arms.

The same advice I'd give anybody do your research and when you think you know enough, do some more.

She has made personal phone calls to us herself and to give us exciting news about our embryos. Even when my husband asked every question you could think she was patient and knew all the answers and best way to proceed.
