She [Dr. Kristin Holoch] based my protocol off of her previous experience. She has gone into detail of all my cycles and has tweaked my next protocol based on my previous results...Her bedside manner is awesome. She gets to the point but is also very patient. She hasn’t pushed us to do IVF just yet and I respect her understanding that IVF is very expensive.
The nursing staff [of KUC for Advanced Reproductive Medicine]were amazing through each of our IUI’s! They were kind, compassionate, and did 99% of the work involved...The clinic is very good with keeping patient confidentiality every time I checked in and their billing department kept us informed of what was due before each appointment...The Letrozole was covered through insurance two out of the three times.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I had no idea the doctor actually isn’t there when my IUI’s were done, but she fully mapped out everything and explained things in great deal. She has been a very personable doctor, but I feel like more investigating needs to happen with my case instead of just slapping on the unexplained infertility diagnosis. I feel like more ultrasounds should have been done throughout my cycles and progesterone should have been prescribed after each IUI. Her bedside manner is awesome. She gets to the point but is also very patient. She hasn’t pushed us to do IVF just yet and I respect her understanding that IVF is very expensive.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Ask as many questions as possible. Get to the bottom of your diagnosis and just have a conversation with her if you don’t understand everything.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I felt like she really listened to my concerns. She based my protocol off of her previous experience. She has gone into detail of all my cycles and has tweaked my next protocol based on my previous results.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I saw Dr. Holoch for the first time on October 14, 2019 and we put together a plan. My husband and I had been trying for over 1.5 years. For my next cycle, I was to take Letrozole 5mg on CD3-CD7, come in to check how many follicles I had on CD 10, then take Ovidrel trigger shot that night of CD10, and do an IUI two days later in the morning of CD12. I did this for two more cycles which included November 2019, December 2019, and January 2020. I was asked to report through their online portal the findings of an in home pregnancy test 14 days after each IUI. All of my IUI’s failed so I reported my CD1. Then the nurse would give me a new protocol. I asked about adding progesterone after the IUI’s and was told I didn’t need it since my uterine lining was thick enough. I also asked about doing more ultrasounds throughout each cycle and was told they are expensive and usually not necessary. Dr. Holoch explained that it may take a few IUI’s to get pregnant and to come see her again after 3 IUI’s. I made an appointment the beginning of February for the earliest date and wasn’t able to see her for another 2 months. I just did a telehealth video appointment with her on March 25. She said we should do at least 3 more IUI’s and use Clomid this time. She doesn’t want to push us into IVF due to financial burden. I didn’t have bad side effects using Letrozole and they produced follicles large enough. So once I am able to get Clomid prescribed (I can’t now due to COVID-19), we will start another cycle to do another IUI.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: I was assigned to multiple nurses through the online portal.)
The nursing staff were amazing through each of our IUI’s! They were kind, compassionate, and did 99% of the work involved. Anytime I had a question, it was answered and they really wanted to help.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic is very good with keeping patient confidentiality every time I checked in and their billing department kept us informed of what was due before each appointment. They were respectful and seem to care about the patients they serve.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The Letrozole was covered through insurance two out of the three times. The third time it was $45 for the 5 day supply. The follicular ultrasound was around $150 for each IUI. The doctor’s visits are around $200. The ovidrel trigger shot was $100 including shipping to our house. I think each IUI was about $300 and my husband’s sperm sample to be washed was about $300. I think we spent around $4,000 for all three IUI’s.
During my treatment, I spoke with Dr. Holoch twice. The protocols were one size fits all and not directed to concerns around my diagnosis/history. Concerns were rarely addressed...when it came to starting the Frozen Transfer and mock trial there were more questions than what was answered. I even had a medication error due to changes mid-cycle. Dr. Holoch never discussed the mock/ERA results or most recently a negative HCG post-FET...
the nursing staff [at KUMC] tries their best with limited resources or time available. The nurses generally sound stressed and rush conversations. Patients are not assigned to a patient. So back and forth messages maybe with multiple nursing and that bring chaos/confusion...The clinic will only allow for one embryo transfer...The front desk is amazing - always smiling and happy! The weaknesses: Communication, patient focus, provider availability, etc. Additionally, the ARNP is very rough...
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
The original visit was very interactive. Answering questions and planning for surgery. I did leave this conversation with a clear understanding of how the surgery would play out. However, when it came to starting the Frozen Transfer and mock trial there were more questions than what was answered. I even had a medication error due to changes mid-cycle. Dr. Holoch never discussed the mock/ERA results or most recently a negative HCG post-FET.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Educate yourself on your history and have all of your questions/concerns ready! Review the SART and CDC data that is reported by the clinic!

The front desk is amazing - always smiling and happy!
The weaknesses: Communication, patient focus, provider availability, etc.
Additionally, the ARNP is very rough. For example biopsy day I was unable to completely relax my hips due to previous surgeries. She pulled on my knees and I started crying in pain. She told me I signed up for it.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Roughly 20K.

What specific things went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Failed to call with results
Failed to order appropriate test
Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The 3most impactful errors within the clinic were changing medication during the mock trial without telling me (50 mg to 100mg PIO). Mock labs were not ordered thus not knowing the level of progesterone. Lastly, Negative HCG was put on my file post FET without notification from the provider or nurse. This is a failed cycle and the provider did not even reach out!
I felt very comfortable speaking with [Dr. Kristin Holoch]. I don’t feel like I got all the information all the time just because there wasn’t enough time to cover everything...I have diminished ovarian reserve...only looking like I’d have a couple eggs but after talking with [her] we decided to move forward and hope for the best. Unfortunately, after the retrieval we only got 2 eggs and they did not fertilize.
Everyone [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] is so nice and helpful. My only complaint is that no one reached out after my failed egg retrieval. I was bummed about that. The doctor called the next day to give me the bad news but I had to reach out to the nurses to schedule a call with Dr. Holoch to talk about next steps...I know she and the clinic are very busy but I wish they had checked in more especially after my retrieval resulted in nothing.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She was great and easy to talk to and let me ask all the questions I had. I felt very comfortable speaking with her. I don’t feel like I got all the information all the time just because there wasn’t enough time to cover everything. And I only talked to her twice on video and once on a phone call which was when my egg retrieval cycle wasn’t looking too good. She didn’t cancel it but left it up to my husband and I (I kind of wish she had said we should cancel or not). She was definitely very empathetic and knew it was a hard situation. She did tell me the good side and the bad side and asked if we wanted to go forward or not with the info we had. We wouldn’t know until we did retrieval whether it would work out or not. We felt confident about moving forward after speaking with her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She’s a great doctor but you won’t talk to her much
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She is great and helpful and delicate when discussing the difficult situation of infertility. I know she and the clinic are very busy but I wish they had checked in more especially after my retrieval resulted in nothing.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We did 3 iuis (medicine, trigger shots and follicular ultrasounds). I felt confident they would work since I’ve been pregnant before but unfortunately they didn’t. Then we moved to ivf. Unfortunately, I have diminished ovarian reserve so it was only looking like I’d have a couple eggs but after talking with Dr. Holoch we decided to move forward and hope for the best. Unfortunately, after the retrieval we only got 2 eggs and they did not fertilize. We are now waiting to talk with Dr. Holoch next week about next steps.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Iui- $600 each (I did 3) $100 for trigger shots (3)
Ivf- $13,750 and $5,000 for medicine (I will get back around $6,000 since my egg retrieval didn’t result in anything and we couldn’t move forward)
Lab work - $300 each for my husband and I for infectious disease labs
Zoom calls- a few hundred dollars each based on time (2 times)
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Holoch took the time to sit down and explain all of our fertility options, the out of pocket costs they would require, and even drew us a picture of how the process worked. She equally respected me and my partner and both of our questions about the fertility process...She included helpful information such as most affordable places to pick up prescriptions that aren’t covered by insurance, and how to start tracking fertility affordable at home.
The [Kansas University Center] clinic is easy to find, clean, comfortable, and it was very quick to get in and see my doctor. Everything during our visit was completed in a timely manner, and my partner was valued as an equal part of the team, which was something that was very important to me as I am in an LGBTQ relationship...The nursing staff was kind, informative, and gave clear information on follow up care and outside resources
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Holoch is kind, meet me at my level of knowledge and politely answered all of my questions in depth. She was also very straight forward about what to expect and cost requirements for each type of treatment. She included helpful information such as most affordable places to pick up prescriptions that aren’t covered by insurance, and how to start tracking fertility affordable at home.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I would tell them to come with all of the questions and concerns that they have without fear of being told they are being too anxious or asking too much, because she understands fertility is exciting and can also be scary.

Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Dr Holoch took into account my age and medical history to recommend treatment. She recommended IUI as we will be attempting pregnancy for the first time, and gave the option of several medications, including their effectiveness and risks

Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
So far I have only gone for initial visits which was $40 copay through my insurance, but it was made clear to me that my insurance will cover most of my infertility testing, but will not cover any medications or procedures associated with fertility
I am so grateful to Dr. Holoch and the guidance she provided us during our journey. She treated every conversation thoughtfully, she always presnted scnearios with alternatives and implications - I felt as though the decisions were in my power, but that we were informed with her recommendation and the reasoning behind it..
I loved the [Kansas University Center] for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and the ease of the portal for our clinic... The biggest weakness of this clinic is the finance team and their processes. I had an instance where my IUI moved forward without prior authorization approval, and the team tried to blame it on me as a patient for not formally informing my nurse team AND the finance team of my cycle Day 1
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I am so grateful to Dr. Holoch and the guidance she provided us during our journey. She treated every conversation thoughtfully, she always presnted scnearios with alternatives and implications - I felt as though the decisions were in my power, but that we were informed with her recommendation and the reasoning behind it. With our MFI, she offered us the option to try IUI first, but set the expectation from the ouset that we more than likely would need IVF (but anticipated us being very successful in that process). I felt encouraged and supported throughout.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Be prepare with your questions whenever you have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Holoch, since more often you will be engaging with the nursing team. Know your preferences going in, but be open to her professional opinion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Her bedside manner is really terrific and she has a kind, caring, but smart approach to speaking with her patients.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Dr. Holoch worked in partnership with Dr. Nanjia, the primary Urologist on the KU Advanced Reproductive Medicine Team, to manage the overall protocol for mysely and my husband. This was a HUGE advantage for us, as we felt that we were being seen as a team, by a team. Multiple sperm analyses informed us that we were likely in the IVF range, but we did have one outlier above that range which led Dr. Holoch and Dr. Nangia to be open to IUIs. We had one full IUI fail, and a second one canceled due to volume. Following that, Dr. Nangia prescribed chlomid for my husband. After the canceled IUI (and after COVID stay at home orders were lifted), we moved forward with planning for our first (and only so far) IVF cycle. Dr. Holoch is a firm believer in genetic testing, which I am grateful for. It gave us a better sense of the success of our cycle and allowed us to better plan for our future. We had our first transfer in October, which was successful - we're currently 8.5 weeks pregnant!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Hillary)
I loved working with the nursing staff at KU, especially the IVF cycle team (who will be with you through your retrieval). Hillary especially was fantastic - kind, easy to relate to, and on top of it. There is a different set of nurses who support you during transfer. Raquel was also easy to work with, direct and quick to reply!
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
I loved the physicians, nurses, pharmacists and the ease of the portal for our clinic. I really appreciated the partnerhip between Dr. Holoch and Dr. Nangia to treat my husband and myself as a couple given our MFI diagnosis - it made the process so much smoother since they were in the same group of physicians (although not physically located at the same place). The biggest weakness of this clinic is the finance team and their processes. I had an instance where my IUI moved forward without prior authorization approval, and the team tried to blame it on me as a patient for not formally informing my nurse team AND the finance team of my cycle Day 1. They absolutely should have the ability to share info internally without that burden falling on the patient. Beyond that, the team was abrasive and not friendly to work with, like the other team members were. They also were not able to provide me with any sort of estimate for our transfer costs, unlike the estimates provided for our IVF retrieval cycle which left us completely in the dark.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
We had coverage and did not have to pay for everything out of pocket.
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Holoch seemed to be very firm in her recommendation, in our case, for single embryo transfer.
IVF Cycle 1 [with Dr. Holoch] - high dose antagonist; used because of DOR diagnosis. Cycle cancelled due to low response...IVF Cycle 2 - low dose antagonist; she thought the high doses from previous cycle “fried” my eggs; cycle cancelled due to low response...IVF Cycle 3 - Lupron flare protocol; retrieved 7 eggs, 4 mature, 3 blasts, all complex abnormal...was very transparent with us when setting expectations. She worked with us to develop a treatment plan that she believed would achieve a pregnancy, however I turned out to be a low responder. She was not afraid to try different protocols or new treatments, which I appreciated.
The nurses and staff in the clinic [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] were excellent. When we had a snafu with their billing dept and insurance pre-approval, the whole team rallied around us to make things right. They knew us by name, sympathized with us when we had let downs, and celebrated our wins with us...When we messaged to start a cycle before the holidays, their financial team was not notified and therefore didn’t get the insurance pre-approval in time. We proceeded with the cycle with the assumption that insurance would approve it.

We did hybrid cycle IUIs with Letrozole plus Gonal-F injections. This was particularly helpful with making sure that we ovulated.
For the IVF cycle we used Menopur, Gonal-F, and Cetrotide.

IUIs are $400 for the insemination. Ultrasounds are about $187 each.
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
This clinic really only does single embryo transfers. They might do multiple transfers, but it isn't encouraged.
[Dr. Kristin Holoch] is a very personable and empathetic doctor. She delivers information with a softness that I find comforting when receiving pertinent information. During IVF, she was attentive to our situation and was able to explain procedures in a simple and concise way. She always made an effort to ask about our lives and get to know us as more than patients...Dr. Holoch suggested one embryo transfer at a time. She explained the pros/cons of one vs. two and ultimately let me choose.
They have a great staff [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine]. The doctors are attentive and the nursing staff really know their stuff. I began to feel like a regular after awhile! I would be sure to prepare questions ahead of time...We paid around $12,000 for IVF including retrieval and one transfer. Additional transfers were around $2,000 each.

She always made an effort to ask about our lives and get to know us as more than patients. One thing I do think this clinic could improve on is communication outside of the physical clinic. A good portion of IVF (injections, pills, etc.) is done in your own home. This requires a good deal of communication between your nurse, your doctor, and your pharmacy. I would have liked a more spelled out guide about what the nurses would be in charge of and when I would see my doctor or if I needed to contact the pharmacy myself. As much as I love my doctor and this clinic, what is obvious information to a medical staff is not always obvious to their patients.

I have seen Dr. Holoch for 3 years for a variety of endometriosis reasons, as well as for IVF. She always remembers little details that I have told her in the last, even if it has been awhile since I’ve seen her. It never feels rushed when we talk. She gives me her whole attention.

They have a great staff. The doctors are attentive and the nursing staff really know their stuff. I began to feel like a regular after awhile! I would be sure to prepare questions ahead of time. I would come with a notebook and pencil to each appointment. There is so much new information that you will want to remember. I assumed everything would be reiterated through literature or my personal IVF plan, but it was not, so I was happy that I had taken notes.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
We paid around $12,000 for IVF including retrieval and one transfer. Additional transfers were around $2,000 each. Our IVF medications from Freedom Pharmacy were around $15,000, but most was covered by my insurance. We opted to not do genetic testing, because we couldn’t afford it.

My husband had a semen sample test, but never received the results. When I asked at my next appointment, they told me his results, but I expected a phone call or some sort of communication beforehand.
Dr. Holoch is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful...if you can reach her. You aren't able to communicate directly with her, rather only with nurses through the portal. Communication is terrible and this makes cycles much more stressful than they already are...[she prefers] single embryo transfer...[new patient advice]Treatment is overall based on what a "normal" woman's cycle is. If you want to switch things up, you really have to self-educate and self-advocate.
Strengths [of Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] : not an overly long wait time to begin treatment, inexpensive Weaknesses: very poor and stressful communication; doctors work as a team, so you won't receive individualized one-on-one treatment...IUI - $600 medication - varied by cycle ultrasound - $90 follow-up with dr - $75

Have a list of questions for your initial appointment and ask for a followup once you begin and get a better grasp.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Holoch is great, but I hardly ever see her. Nurses and technicians absolutely make you feel like a number... it starts to feel like a cattle chute of women going in and out. Ultrasounds are rushed and no information is given... it feels like they're trying to get you out as soon as possible, and I'm constantly hearing how busy they are, which makes it seem like they're too busy for me. We absolutely don't feel like any of them have a vested interest in our personal experience. Treatment was continually based on what is "typical" for a woman's cycle, even when my cycle proved to be atypical.

Treatment is overall based on what a "normal" woman's cycle is. If you want to switch things up, you really have to self-educate and self-advocate.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Terrible communicators. One nurse will tell you one thing, and another will say something completely different. Incorrect instructions have been given multiple times, so you have to literally double-check everything they say.
It would be great to communicate via the phone to help combat this, but the only way to reach them is via the portal, where they are more often than not slow to respond. There have also been times when I don't receive a response and have to check back in.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Strengths: not an overly long wait time to begin treatment, inexpensive
Weaknesses: very poor and stressful communication; doctors work as a team, so you won't receive individualized one-on-one treatment.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
IUI - $600
medication - varied by cycle
ultrasound - $90

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Showed up for an appointment that the nurse forgot to book, multiple times have received conflicting information from nurses, at some point they quit giving you any information during ultrasounds and now make you wait for a message from the portal, was told to take prescription but failed to send it in resulting in inability to follow prescribed treatment
She [Dr. Holoch] found a uterine polyp on my exam, and called me directly to discuss it. She explained the process to remove the polyp and all of the risks. We also discussed my next steps in our fertility journey. We had a 20 minute conversation at 6pm and she didn’t try to rush me off the phone. I could tell she genuinely cared about me as a person!...allows plenty of time to make sure all of your questions are answered, so be prepared so you can make the most of your appointment time!
The clinic [KUMC] has a great patient portal that allows easy flow of communication between patient, nurses, and Dr. The clinic is clean and organized. The only downside is the wait time In the waiting room for appointments; however this is common at most Dr.’s offices. I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone!...The nursing staff has been very knowledgeable and compassionate. The online patient portal is a wonderful tool to have. The nurses are quick to respond to questions in the portal.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I would advice a prospective client of Dr Holoch to make a list of questions before your appointment. Dr Holoch allows plenty of time to make sure all of your questions are answered, so be prepared so you can make the most of your appointment time!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Holoch always explained everything in a way we would understand. She was always very patient with me and made sure all of my questions were answered during my appointments.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Dr Holoch recommended we start with fertility pills (clomid 1 cycle, letrozole the other 5 cycles). Clomid caused me to have some intense side effects and it made my lining too thin, so Dr Holoch switched me to letrozole the next cycle. The first two cycles we did timed intercourse and the last 4 we did IUI. None of them have been successful, but we plan to move onto IVF in the near future. During my saline sonogram, Dr Holoch found a polyp. She plans to remove the polyp before we move onto IVF.

We liked that she was up to date on current research and treatment options being performed. She handled our miscarriage appropriately without babying us but with compassion. We had issues with the staff and she was very understanding about helping us, including calling us the day of a funeral she was at. ... When I wanted to be more aggressive, she discussed real options with me that we'll be pursuing.
Weakness [of KU Med] - 100% the nursing staff. Second being the portal communication. It is HORRIBLY slow to use. ... It was very much the nursing staff that caused problems. They communicated poorly, the wrong information and caused me severe unneeded emotional stress. They are also very difficult to contact. They use this terrible portal, but no where is there a phone number in the portal if you have issues!

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She seems wonderful but her nursing staff is terrible.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
When I actually got to talk to Dr Holoch, she was wonderful. She explained things well in normal terms without dumbing it down to much. When I wanted to be more aggressive, she discussed real options with me that we'll be pursuing.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We started with well defined plan on what we were testing for and why. When they came back unexplained, the plan made was for timed intercourse with femara to help induce healthier ovulation, since I did ovulate, progesterone supplements, and the antihistamine protocol. That resulted in only a miscarriage, still at 5 weeks. From there we are currently moving into an IUI with the hopes that we may have better luck with a trigger shot.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff is extremely week. They do not communicate well using a terribly designed patient portal. They often overlook questions which results in repeatedly asking the same questions. They do not include enough information when they translate Dr Holochs information. They treat you like a number and often don't look at your chart before replying. They are insensitive to the emotional turmoil we go through. They are uneducated about certain treatments they provide, such as methotrexate injections.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Strength - definitely Dr Holoch being a modern doctor. She is patient when asking questions and is always open to discuss treatments or research studies mentioned by me. She also did not dismiss my husbands role in this process.
Weakness - 100% the nursing staff. Second being the portal communication. It is HORRIBLY slow to use.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Most of it has been covered under my insurance. Without insurance costs will be: IUI $600, + the trigger shot, $120, femara, $8, plus 2-3 ultrasounds at $250 each

100% treated like a human by Dr. Holoch...has called me directly to discuss next steps, results and even to tell me I was pregnant (I later miscarried). She is AWESOME...Be prepared to only see her at the initial consult, which is usually far out from when you are actively "needing" to see her (and when you will want advice from her and live conversations vs portal messages). She is an amazing and empathetic doctor, just very hard to get in touch with due to barriers the clinic puts in place.
[Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] Forgot to call in Progesterone for first IUI cycle -Did not check in on me when I was Hyperstemming from IVF retrieval (I had to call them to get updates and ask what to do) -Didn't change my D&C appointment to a consult after I miscarried on my own after IVF cycle -Doesn't try to get you scheduled quickly and instead prioritizes new patient consults on the Dr's calendar

100% treated like a human by Dr. Holoch. Her back office and nurses on the other hand - 100% like a NUMBER which is so frustrating.

6 IUIs - Levothyroxine

Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
In person, the nurses are compassionate and helpful. But if you are not in the office, the only way to contact them is to leave a voicemail or a portal message, and they typically do not call you back (instead they portal message you back). You are shuffled from nurse to nurse, and never know who will be responding to your message. They must be completely overwhelmed (due to their response time) or lack a sense of urgency.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The first clinic that I was at assigned me a specific NP; this clinic does not assign you to anyone, and if they do, you are shuffled from nurse to nurse and never know who you will talk to or when.
They also do not try to get you into the Doctor to get any concerns addressed (which I'm sure is protocol to try to address concerns themselves). For instance, I miscarried at 7wks after my first IVF transfer, and was told that I couldn't get in to talk to my Dr about next steps for another 5 weeks. (!)
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
In hindsight, I wish I would have let her suggest what we do. I basically told her that I was told by my last doctor that we needed to transfer only one, since I had preeclampsia with my first baby and was at risk of developing it again.

Dr. Holloch was amazing! She spent time with to answer all of my questions and explained everything so I could make the best choice for me, my care and the future of our family. She even made time to meet with me in person if I had questions or concerns along the way. She was very supportive and empathetic when we had to cancel due to my body not responding to meds for a transfer...I had a ton of questions and was very scared due to my past pregnancy losses. She was very empathetic and supportive. She always knew my labs and reviewed my chart. She remembered personal details and even checked up on me during the pregnancy. Being with her and the network at KU was like being part of a team that supports your vision of having a family. She was honest about protocols and treatment plans.
I had 2 coordinations and a NP [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] that we’re amazing and always knew what my current plan was and what the doctor wanted them to update me on. They had hand outs and schedules to keep me organized with all my meds and appointments...let me use the pharmacy of my choice to save on cost or bundle IVF meds...The clinic was great and operated smoothly. The wait times were often minimal and if you did have a longer wait time of 15 minutes, you could check In with the front desk. The team was organized and the process of moving patients between US and labs was smooth.

I did miscarry at 6 weeks and came to the clinic to be checked out and while she did everything she could and my levels prior to the loss were excellent, she was supportive and followed up with me afterwords to discuss options and next steps.

Before seeing Dr. Holloch I was pregnant with triplets from OI meds and and IUI cycle. I went into labor at 22 weeks and my daughters passed away shortly after they wore born. We decided to try again but with Dr Holloch at KU medical. She was cautious and encouraged IVF to help reduce the risk of multiples by doing only 1 transferred embryo. It only took a few weeks for the stimulation meds of follistem to work. We did a frozen cycle because my body needed time to heal from the retrieval. Once healed we did estrogen to build up the lining. When my body failed to respond we did a low dose or letrozole to build the lining and it worked for me beautifully. I had my child 9 months later with no complications during the pregnancy or delivery.

Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
In my case loosing a multiples pregnancy it was no question for me and my doctor to only transfer 1 embryo.
I didn't have a good experience as a patient with Dr. Holoch. We only saw her 3 times in the year that we went through treatment with her. Our treatment plan never changed, despite several failed IUI cycles. She was late to every appointment. She was 30 minutes late to our last appointment and then was very defensive when talking with us. No one came in to tell us that she was running behind, so we just sat there waiting.
They [KS University Center] are quick to get you an appointment, but other than that I just felt like a number. The front desk staff was usually friendly. The wait time was usually about 15 minutes. ... I felt like we were rushed for our appointments and all the results were provided through the portal and not explained in person or over the phone. ... There was one excellent nurse named Jen that we loved. She truly cared about her patients and was the only one that didn't make you feel like you were just a number.

Every IUI it was Femara for 5 days, Gonal F for usually 2 days at 75 units, and progesterone supplements after the IUI. I had 7 IUIs done and every single one resulted in a BFN.

Dr Holoch was amazing at listening and explaining everything to me and my husband. She even called me directly a few times. She is amazing at her job! I would recommend her. The only thing I don't like about this clinic is you deal with the nurses majority of the time and only see the doctors if needed.... We did 2 IUIs with no success. We wanted to move forward with IVF. We did 3 months on depo for my endometriosis after my retrieval. Then a frozen transfer of 2 embryos. They let us decide on number of embryos to transfer but encouraged just 1.
The clinic [KU Ctr for Advanced Repro Med] was great and I would use them again. The biggest issue I had was with communication. I felt like I had to be on my own stuff or things would get missed. I had issues with billing that I had to keep calling about. I also had to remind nurses what my plan of care was. The clinic is great if you're in top of everything but if you're not probably not the best for you... I believe with everything IUIs and IVF it was around $22,000

Dr. Holoch is incredibly smart and up to date on all new medical treatment options. She clearly explained each and every step of the way so we never left the office feeling confused. She made it a point to include us in each decision that we made for our treatment. Her bedside manner is impeccable and I truly felt like she was invested with us during our entire process. I did not feel like I was a part of a large "system" where all treatments were directed down the same pathway, each step was highly individualized
I saw/interacted with several of the nurses [at KUMC Center for Advanced Reproductive Med] throughout our treatments, and each time they were incredibly personable and supportive. They were always available to help me and very quick to respond to any email questions or concerns.... The clinic is easy to find and professional appearing. The office has everything you need and there are many people around to help direct your care exactly where it needs to go. You probably will wait a little bit, but not more than 20 minutes, which is extremely good in my experience.

The cost for each IUI was definitely in the range of what I have seen everywhere. I am not completely sure on the exact amount.
Our initial visit [with Dr. Holoch] was very straightforward and a plan was developed. I think after that I had more concerns about discovering the true reason behind my infertility and multiple miscarriages and so far have no answers in that regard. Not sure if they don't explore as the treatments are all the same though. She has adjusted medication behind the scene but have not seen since first visit.
I also overheard a nurse [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] comment that she was selling IVF when she was giving me our overview packet but she might have meant it in another way. Otherwise they are excellent and usually call back quite quickly and are accommodating with their hours...Some of the nurses were incredibly compassionate and answered my questions and some refused to give me any information during the ultrasound, saying it would be gone over later.

Medicated IUI cycle with clomid on cycle day 3-5, an ultrasound around day 12, an ovedril injection shot, and then prometrium for two weeks after insemination. Prometrium as I have had two miscarriages. For cycle two added additional medication, letrzole as I had one ultrasound showing small follicles and my second ultrasound showed they shrinked so started that for 5 days and by third ultrasound there was one mature follicle. Both cycles resulted in negative tests. On third cycle now

Strengths is hours and having everything in one location. Weakness is timeliness only when it comes to IUI procedure. It is usually an hour after scheduled time which is hard to plan around and the waiting can cause anxiety
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Medications ranged form 50-$100 dollars for each and I have taken four different types with each cycle. Ultrasounds are around $150 and I had to have three one cycle. Insemination is $650.
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
I was only able to see Dr. Holloch one time at our initial consult....Upon meeting Dr Holloch she was kind and compassionate... We were disappointed that it would be the only time we ever actually saw her over our treatment of 8 months. And we’re told the only way we would be able to see her would be to schedule an IVF consult...Dr. Holloch suggested we try 4 rounds of chlomid (50 mg) in our own
Overall the nurses are friendly but disorganized. Don’t expect to have a personal relationship formed at this clinic with the staff [KU Med]. I certainly felt like another number not a human being trying to build a family.... I was disturbed that each nurse would have a different answer to my same question. During my second IUI the nurse laughed as she was in the middle of turkey basting me and said “oh I hope I did that right” .

I would say to have done research. Know the important questions to ask, things to expects, and to discuss your expectations as patients with her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I was only able to see Dr. Holloch one time at our initial consult. During each monthly visit I had a new nurse who clearly had not reviewed my file and did not ask the questions I had assumed would be important to know for my appointment. Ie mid sonogram would ask if I was in for egg retrieval’s or IUIs.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
After reviewing my medical history and tests I had already completed through my obgyn at an attempt to discuss the factor causing my infertility. She determined the best plan was to have my husband complete two separate semen analysis - both which came back with “perfect” little swimmers. After ruling out make factor and knowing all my tests came back “normal” Dr. Holloch suggested we try 4 rounds of chlomid (50 mg) in our own aka take a pill everyday for a week then use our OPK at home kits to know the days we should be doing the baby dance. 4 months later no baby. Month 5 and 6 Dr. Holloch had planned to increase chlomid to 100 mg and start IUIS. Neither helped. Dr hollochs (aka her nurses) next recommendation was to schedule an IVF consult (for a small fee of 350$) with Dr Holloch as this was the “next best step and only solution” for my family.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff were all over the place. Over 6 months at the clinic I never had the same nurse. I was disturbed that each nurse would have a different answer to my same question. During my second IUI the nurse laughed as she was in the middle of turkey basting me and said “oh I hope I did that right” .. me too since I just paid the receptionist over 600 dollars. Other nurses made promises that today was the day you would be making a baby - not a good thing to promise a desperate woman.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Overall the nurses are friendly but disorganized. Don’t expect to have a personal relationship formed at this clinic with the staff. I certainly felt like another number not a human being trying to build a family.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
600 dollars for one round of IUI.
200 dollars per sonogram before the IUI (this cost depends on your insurance, my insurance covered 60% of cost 200 is what I was still owed)
250 dollars for an initial consult.
350 dollars for IVF consult.
My HSG test was quoted at up to 2500 dollars and thankfully insurance covered almost all of that.
Each semen analysis was a couple hundred dollars (do not recall specific amount).

My husband and I had our initial consult with the clinic and when we showed up they told us we weren’t on the schedule. After some digging we were in fact on the schedule. They were still able to “squeeze” us in with Dr. Holloch which resulted in a rushed initial consult.
Doctor [Holoch] was comfortable transferring two embryos. Both stuck but miscarried one at 8 weeks. I wish I asked about success rates in regards to if it is better to transfer one or two as I wonder if I would have miscarried if only one was transferred.... Great bedside manner, willing to listen and figure out best treatment... Very caring and showed understanding with any setbacks. Would explain process and test results in a way that was easily understandable.
All staff [Kansas U Ctr for Advanced Repro Med] was again very understanding and empathetic.... Coordinator talked with our insurance and made it seem like the donor eggs would be covered due to having no exclusions but later was denied due to no procedure code.... $15,000 for donor eggs. Roughly a thousand or two for medications and roughly $3500 for transfer. Appointments were around $1-300. Unknown for blood work/tests.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?

Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
It was recommended I go straight to donor eggs for a successful pregnancy. I first used estrogen patches that increased to 3mg that changed every couple days. My lining did not get thick enough during this time so that IVF cycle was cancelled and never used the remaining meds- progesterone of some sort. I then went to estrogen and progesterone shots twice a day- dosage unknown. We transferred two eggs in which both stuck but later miscarried one at 8 weeks. I stopped shots at 10/11 weeks and went to obgyn. This was a successful pregnancy. We still have one frozen embryo.

Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Great communication and easy process. Weakness- my insurance denied claims even though we supposedly had 15k lifetime towards fertility. I thought it was covered due to their staff talking with my insurance but somehow there was miscommunication and was not covered due to no diagnostic code for receiving donor eggs. We changed insurances in the middle of it and paid out of pocket for the procedure which had we known insurance wouldn’t cover donor eggs we would have at least had it cover the medication and transfer.

After my miscarriage, my uterus behaved differently with the injectables and she [Dr. Holoch] cancelled the transfer with concern for suboptimal lining. She was very thorough in describing that she didn’t want to chance losing an embryo. The subsequent transfer we used vaginal estrogen and injectables and it was perfect...She took her time to explain the process, the likely reasons for my miscarriage, was encouraging but not pushy after our loss, and honest the whole way through
Weakness: [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine doesn't] get many long distance patients like myself so there was some learning curve. There was some delay in communication from front office staff to back. Strengths: welcoming, timely, organized, compassionate. The transfer nurse is one of the best humans on the planet...She [nurse] was extremely organized and communicated well with appropriate response times. Not the biggest snuggler but she was an awesome guide.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She is professional, kind, and honest. She is compassionate in the deliverance of suboptimal news, is honest but not blunt about predicted outcomes, and is able to have a sense of humor along the way!

We originally used all injectables on my first transfer with her. My lining grew slowly so she offered ideas to adjunct the medications that worked. Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
She gave us the option of what we wanted to do and outlined the probabilities of both as well as the risks involved.
Dr. Holoch was always very kind and supportive....Dr. Holoch was a great doctor--caring and compassionate. I never felt rushed during my appointments with her. Her explanations were also clear and easy to understand--she was talented at explaining complex concepts to patients without any medical background....I was able to begin ovarian stimulation with Dr. Holoch in anticipation of going through IVF.... I only had 5 eggs, and my estrogen levels were low enough that Dr. Holoch did not think I would have more than 1 viable egg.
Nurses kept forgetting that my wife and I were a same-sex couple, that she was going to go through egg retrieval and that I was going to carry the baby. The clinic [KU] was a bit of a circus. We'd show up at the time of our appointment and it was basically unpredictable whether we'd be seen on time, or how much time it would take.... My wife almost missed a cycle because they wrote my date of birth instead of hers in a baseline blood test they ordered for her to have on a Friday.

Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I went through 3 unsuccessful IUIs with my own eggs with a different doctor who ended up leaving the KU Med clinic I went to. A few months later, thanks to funding we received from the Baby Quest Foundation, I was able to begin ovarian stimulation with Dr. Holoch in anticipation of going through IVF. Unfortunately, the stimulation was not successful. I only had 5 eggs, and my estrogen levels were low enough that Dr. Holoch did not think I would have more than 1 viable egg. She therefore recommended canceling the IVF and instead doing an IUI, which was not successful. I was then 37. My wife at the time was 28. Given the lack of success with my eggs, we decided to begin an IVF cycle with her eggs. She went through the stimulation and had 13 eggs retrieved, 11 of which were mature. We ended up with 5 fertilized eggs (with sperm from a donor), 2 of which gave us good embryos. We froze the embryos and 1 of them was transferred into my uterus a month later. This is how we had our son.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Christina Williams was the primary nurse. Different coordinators were in charge at different points in time.)
Dr. Holoch was great, but her staff was a disaster. Nurses kept forgetting that my wife and I were a same-sex couple, that she was going to go through egg retrieval and that I was going to carry the baby. The clinic was a bit of a circus. We'd show up at the time of our appointment and it was basically unpredictable whether we'd be seen on time, or how much time it would take. More than once, they ordered the wrong medications and/or forgot to order certain medications. If I had not been on top of things, I would have missed some of the medications I was supposed to take during the stimulation period. Our experience with this clinic was not great. If we had known this ahead of time, we would have selected a different clinic. We're not sure who is to blame--the doctor, the nursing/coordinating team, the system in place, or all of the above.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Because the nursing staff was very disorganized, we did not have a great experience with this clinic. We do not know if our experience extends to the whole clinic or just to the staff who worked with Dr. Holoch. Either way, we would not recommend this clinic.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The canceled IVF cycle, the successful IVF cycle, and the egg transfer ended up costing about $15,000. This does not include any of the medicine.
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Given the higher risk associated with twin pregnancies, and because my wife was younger and her eggs were likely to be healthy, Dr. Holoch recommended transferring only 1 embryo at a time, which is what we did.
What specific things went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Failed to call with results
Failed to order appropriate test
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Another example of things that went wrong: My wife almost missed a cycle because they wrote my date of birth instead of hers in a baseline blood test they ordered for her to have on a Friday. Since the clinic closes early on Fridays, the error could not be fixed until the following week. The list of examples like these goes on and on.
Dr.Holoch was lovely and we had a very good first impression after our first visit. When we had multiple failed IUI’s we came back for an IVF consult, it seemed like my chart had not been reviewed prior to our consult. The IVF spiel seemed very standardized and like they didn’t vary their protocol much and she was in and out within 10 minutes...Took letrozole 5mg with 2 follicles on US until I asked about a protocol change when we increased letrozole to 7.5 mg.
[Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] Strength that they don’t batch IVF cycles and a provider is available in office 7 days a week if you need something completed on the weekend...Office nurses seemed great, very compassionate and positive. Portal nurses I had some less than desirable interactions with. Did not feel like they were doing anything to make an already stressful situation any less stressful.

Be your own advocate with nursing staff

Everyone seemed to be treated with very standardized protocols. After 3 failed IUIs I reached out asking if we could do anything different for the next round and the nurse asked what I had in mind. Felt like you had to really advocate for yourself for anything outside the norm.

$650 per IUI. Letrozole covered by insurance. Trigger shot $107. Ultrasound partially covered by insurance.
Dr. Holoch was kind and had a good bedside manner. I wish she was more realistic about the severity of our condition and the fertility treatments that would give us the quickest positive result. Our appointments started 10-15 minutes after the scheduled time which made it difficult when I had to leave and return to work. She usually has students attending during our appointments which I enjoy because students needs clinical experience...
They [nurses at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] were responsive via the eivf patient portal and gentle during the IUI procedure...Scheduling for follow ups or with other doctors associated with Dr. Holoch took longer because you have to call through the hospital scheduling line and not Dr. Holoch's office directly, so be prepared for phone tag. The nurses in the patient portal had a quick response time when contacting them with questions-I never had to wait more than 12-24 hours for a response....

Negative pregnancy test
Dr. Holoch encouraged IUI stating that "it only takes 1 sperm"

I only saw the Doctor [Dr. Holoch] at my consultation. She was great and we made a plan during that consult. After that I only saw nurses and office staff. They were incredible, and I got to know a couple nurses very well. So with them I felt human, but with the doctor it felt a little bit inhuman. We had unexplained infertility for 4 years. Every test was clear and endo surgery showed no signs of endo or inflammation. We did 1 round of IUI with fertility drugs and a trigger shot and it worked the first time...She was articulate and spoke plainly about what lie ahead. But after the initial consult I never saw her again. I don’t think that it is too rare but it is weird. I would have loved to have a more hands-on doctor, but I’m not sure that exists in the fertility world.
Less than 2k for one round of IUI and general labs, semen analysis and consult fee [at Kansas University]...It’s intimidating to only be able to call scheduling to get into the clinic. But after the initial touchpoint, it’s a very intuitive system. She [Dr. Kristin Holoch] was nice and truly wanted the best for me and she was always willing to try something I suggested unless it was not safe to do so. She was always available to call if I wanted to speak to her and able to set an appointment with her as well...You won’t see her but she is available when you ask for her...She always lets me give my input and let’s me drive...I started with timed Intercorse and meds and a trigger shot and tried that 2 times and then we moved onto IUI and talking about ivf if IUI doesn’t work
Wait time for new patient app is crazy. They [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] don’t set things up at first you really have to push to get things done but once you’re in you can get appointments no problem. They are nice about getting back to you on the portal but are lacing compassion...They [nursing staff] are nice and get back fast but sometimes are not compassionate when replying on the portal. It’s upsetting to have negative test after test and they said call with your next period. Like it’s no biggie
