How was your experience with Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
Dr. Shaykh was very knowledgeable and explained each step of the procedure accurately and with great detail (I am a biologist so that's what I wanted). But I also expect he would be great at just giving a basic understanding of what to expect for those who aren't interested in the nitty-gritty details. He did not appear to have a lot of the biases that I have seen in other fertility doctors -- I am gay and obese and neither of these facts were issues to him. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
Be prepared for expense -- not just from the cost of treatment. Obviously fertility treatments are expensive. But if you're planning to do IVF through the Roanoke office you also need to pay to fly to Jacksonville and stay there for at least a few days because the Roanoke office isn't equipped for surgery. I still think it's worth seeing him over the other doctors in the Roanoke area, but just be aware that that will add to the budget.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
Dr. Shaykh was very caring and established early on that he cared about our wishes and outcomes. He explained the procedures well and has answered many questions. His staff was always available and it was much easier than I expected to go from speaking to a receptionist to speaking with Dr. Shaykh when I wanted to contact him. He even gave me a free appointment after our second cycle didn't work and we needed to discuss medication changes.
Describe the protocols Marwan Shaykh used in your cycles at Assisted Fertility Program and their degree of success.
We decided to begin with IUI. I had wanted to do an unmedicated cycle but Dr. Shaykh recommended we go straight to medicated.
First and second cycle -- Clomid for first five days of cycle, ultrasounds every two days starting around day 7, when egg reached maturity, at-home HCG trigger shot (10,000), then insemination 24 hours later.
Third cycle -- same procedure but with letrozol.
All have resulted in negative pregnancy tests. If you miss your period, you call the office, and he will order a blood a few days after your period is supposed to start. On my third cycle my period was late, but arrived before they ran a blood test.
How competent was Marwan Shaykh at LGBTQ+ care?
Dr. Shaykh treated us with respect throughout the process. He wasn't sure about a few of the legal questions we had, but that wasn't really his wheelhouse. Other than that, he never treated us poorly because of our same-sex status and was very kind and understanding about our frustrations with not being able to use insurance since we weren't straight.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Assisted Fertility Program. (Assigned nurse: Lisa)
Nurse Lisa was responsible for the majority of our care as she followed Dr. Shaykh's orders. She did all of our ultrasounds and inseminations, taught us how to do the trigger shots, managed my medications, and was our main point of contact for our care. Describe your experience with Assisted Fertility Program.
The clinic is very organized and clearly works well as a team. The big part of the clinic is in Jacksonville, FL, which is where the doctor is during most of the month. This means that they have to have very good communication, since there is such a huge distance. That totally worked in our favor -- paperwork had a turnaround time of less than 24 hours and I knew there was a big staff working on it, but we had that single point of contact from the Roanoke office that made it so much easier to keep everything organized. Everyone we spoke to was courteous and kind. I can only speak to the Roanoke office as I haven't visited the Jacksonville one, but we had a great experience in Roanoke.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program.
For three rounds of IUI, we paid about $7,000.
Each appointment with Dr. Shaykh is $300.
The HSG test was required and cost about $1,300 with insurance coverage. If we hadn't had insurance cover part of it, it would have been about four hundred dollars.
The first ultrasound of each cycle costs $250 and the subsequent ultrasounds (to monitor egg size) are $200 each.
Clomid and letrozol were covered by my insurance but the HCG trigger shot was not. The office can provide the trigger shot for $100, which ended up being way cheaper than any pharmacy in the area.
The cost of the IUI procedure itself is $300.
Sperm runs around $900 each cycle for one vial of washed sample, ordered through an outside sperm bank. The clinic can wash sperm for $100, which is the same as what the sperm bank charged.
All in all, each cycle cost about $1,700 with an upstart cost for pre-treatment testing of about $1,600.
How competent was Assisted Fertility Program at LGBTQ+ care?
They treated us exactly like I expect they treat every other client. This was great and SO much better than the other clinics in the area, so we're entirely satisfied. But they weren't very strongly pro-LGBT, just very neutral, which, again, was great.
Describe your experience using 3rd party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier) at Assisted Fertility Program.
We used donor sperm from a bank. There isn't a storage facility in the Roanoke office, so we had to order a new sample separately each month. This probably added $300 in shipping to each cycle as opposed to buying several vials at once, but we were likely to go this route anyways in the hopes that we wouldn't need very many cycles. The sperm also cannot be delivered to the office since there isn't someone there full-time, so you have to get it delivered to your home address. This requires a little bit of extra work when ordering the sperm for the first time -- you need to submit a form signed by Dr. Shaykh that he's overseeing your care (this isn't true for all sperm banks, but most will require something like this). The turnaround time for that paperwork was about 24 hours with the Jacksonville office, which was very reasonable. It just means you need to be prepared before you get the go-ahead to order sperm about two days in advance of your ovulation.
I was incredibly misguided by this doctor [Dr. Marwan Shaykh]. I believed I had picked the best person that was going to be open, forthcoming, informative, and would include me in my own fertility journey. Instead, I met someone who was egotistical and unwilling to collaborate with patients when helping them understand the treatment they were providing. During my IUI , I never received a consent form that explained the procedure or a document that verified the vial that was to be used.
[Assisted Fertility Program] Strength - the front desk receptionists are friendly...Disrespectful and egostical doctor who doesn’t not include the patient in their fertility journey. Does not provide proper documentation for potentially life changing event such as verifying the donor identification number used versus the one I purchased...They [nursing staff] were competent...I'd highly recommend you'd go somewhere else for your fertility needs.
How was your experience with Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
I'd like to think I did meticulous research on this physician's ratings, fertility treatments, and approach to patient-care across multiple platforms.I was incredibly misguided by this doctor.

When asked for information on the quality of the thawed specimen, I was told, the sperm was moving so it was “Good” despite semen analysis usually done afterwards.
In my experience, he did not accepted general questions about standard of care and used a repeatedly aggressive raised tone towards me, in addition to using offensive language, as well. I was highly uncomfortable and felt threatened at a certain point during my treatment. I'd highly recommend you'd go somewhere else for your fertility needs.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
Please ask for documentation before any procedure is done. Please ask to verify the donor and lot number of the specimen is the one you actually bought and the one being used for the insemination. Ask for documentation before hand.

Describe the protocols Marwan Shaykh used in your cycles at Assisted Fertility Program and their degree of success.
The doctor told me if I was ready for the insemination and if I wanted to see the thawed sperm. No written consent or written verification of the donor vial used in my care was ever provided. When asking for quality of sperm, the donor was dismissive and said the sperm was moving so “it’s good” as oppose to running a proper semen analysis to confirm quality of spent AFTER thawing. When asking for clarification, was made to feel like I did not have a say in asking for clarification and was insulted alone in his office.

Dr. Shaykh will perform diagnostic test to rule out any uterine and/or male fertility issues before beginning treatment...I had my tubes tied during my previous marriage. I met my husband and we decided to have a baby as he doesn't have any kids. Dr. Shaykh and I decided on IVF due to my age (38 at the time). I was on birth control pills for a month and then took Gonal F mixed with Menopur intramuscularly for 11 days while having my eggs monitored for maturity.
Their [Assisted Fert Program] strengths are the wonderful doctor, the awesome nurses and the fantastic embryologist. Without this practice, I wouldn't have my daughter. They truly care and they take the time to learn your name and treat you like a human...All of the nurses are awesome and I can't say that enough. They we're wonderful through the entire process and trying again after our loss...Dr. Shaykh and his staff were the only practice that didn't treat us like cattle being herded. The waiting room is never over packed and you will be seen in a timely manner.
How was your experience with Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
Dr. Shaykh is not like the other two IVF practices I have encountered that want to start treatment before looking for all possible fertility roadblocks. Dr. Shaykh will perform diagnostic test to rule out any uterine and/or male fertility issues before beginning treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
The advice I would give a prospective patient of Dr. Shaykh would be to keep your appointments and follow your treatment calendar to the letter. Many of my friends IVF cycles have failed or we're cancelled because they ignored the doctor's orders. Dr. Shaykh and the nurses take a lot of time planning these cycles and it's just a waste of money and time to ignore the instructions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
Dr. Shaykh and his staff treated my husband and I like family. I have checked out other doctors before deciding on a practice to handle my treatment and Dr. Shaykh and his staff were the only practice that didn't treat us like cattle being herded. The waiting room is never over packed and you will be seen in a timely manner.

I had my tubes tied during my previous marriage.
On the 13th day I took my trigger shot of Pregnyl and that Friday was the egg retrieval. 11 eggs were retrieved, 9 were mature, 9 fertilized.
We got three embryos for the fresh transfer and one was frozen. From the fresh transfer, one embryo implanted and resulted in a pregnancy with a healthy baby that ended at 21 weeks due to preterm labor and an incompetent cervix. Dr. Shaykh and his staff were extremely compassionate and assisted with planning the frozen embryo transfer once my husband and I decided we were ready.
Three months after our loss, we decided to try again with the frozen embryo. Dr. Shaykh started me on birth control pills and lupron injections. Once I got my period, my lining was checked and my transfer was completed two weeks later. I found out that I was pregnant 5 days after my frozen transfer and scheduled an appointment with an obstetrician. After obtaining a referral from my obstetrician to get a cerclage from a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and bed rest, I have my beautiful baby girl.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Assisted Fertility Program. (Assigned nurse: I was assigned to Heather and Kim for the first cycle and Tiffany and Kim for the second cycle.)
All of the nurses are awesome and I can't say that enough. They we're wonderful through the entire process and trying again after our loss. We went to visit them with the baby and I didn't hesitate to let Kim hold my baby because they are more like family members than a doctor's staff.
Describe your experience with Assisted Fertility Program.
The clinic's only weakness is they can't show other clinics how to be good to patients.
Their strengths are the wonderful doctor, the awesome nurses and the fantastic embryologist. Without this practice, I wouldn't have my daughter. They truly care and they take the time to learn your name and treat you like a human.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program.
I don't remember the cost but we paid for the full cycle which was $6500, $750 for embryo freezing, around $4000 for medication and $2500 for the frozen transfer.
Describe Marwan Shaykh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Assisted Fertility Program.
Dr. Shaykh is really good about following the guidelines for number of embryos transfer according to patient age. He doesn't believe in transferring more embryos than it would take to have a awesome chance at pregnancy.
Dr. Shaykh was very thorough and very hopeful that we were making the correct treatment scenario. He was very polite and extremely understanding and only wanted the best for us. He was careful to remind of us the many risk and also assured us that the surgery may not be successful. He made sure I was very comfortable before and after surgery. I’ve never been anything but completely pleased with his work.
The clinics nurses, office coordinator and staff [at Assisted Fertility Program] were all very helpful and clear during the planing and operation. The nurses were so very sincere when the anesthesia wore off. They made complete sure my pain level wasn’t terrible. They gave me my care package and made sure I knew how to care for my wounds. After a week at home I panicked because my sutures were protruding through my skin at the operation site, scared me to death. One call and several pictures to the nurses and I was fine. They were so nice and understanding

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
My advice would be to go on with the IVF although it’s a bit pricier the odds are higher in my opinion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marwan Shaykh at Assisted Fertility Program?
I felt like the care I received during my tubal reversal was top rated. The Doctor, nurses and staff all gave their 110%. After care was excellent and they were very helpful with any questions after the surgery. Although I haven’t been blessed with a baby at this time, my faith hasn’t faded.

He [Dr. Shaykh] was good about letting you pick what you felt comfortable with. We transferred two and he made sure we understood risks before signing...He was very professional with us- nothing more, nothing less,...Dr.shaykh always seemed very knowledgeable...Unfortunate the ivf was not successful for us but I would be willing to use him again in the future...I started on birthcontrol to manipulate my hormones. I would take a couple different injectables twice a day leading up to the transfer day.
My favorite part [about Assisted Fertility Program] was the staff. The ivf nurses became very closely involved and always seemed to care. The technology they use is great too...Kim [nurse] was very caring and great at communicating with me daily, she always responded to anything I sent nearly immediately. I was contacted for payment on something I didn’t need to pay on but was refunded shortly after.
