When you are speaking with her [Dr. Maya Barsky] you have her undivided attention, she gives you a lot of information, but in an easy to digest way and always encourages and allows plenty of time for any and all questions - you really feel she wants you to feel fully informed before you end your time together. You never get the sense she's rushing on to the next patient. It was momentarily disappointing to realise that for so many of your other appointments (monitoring scans etc.) that her nurses do these instead of Dr Barsky
I really liked the [Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] clinic, small, friendly, all-female staff. We had all our monitoring and visits with Dr Barsky and team at the South Austin location and went to Westlake for the retrieval and transfer procedures. I never had to wait more than 5 minutes. They were always available on the phone, helpful as we navigated the whole process, friendly in person. Even Ann the finance lady went above and beyond was extremely helpful.

You never get the sense she's rushing on to the next patient.
It was momentarily disappointing to realise that for so many of your other appointments (monitoring scans etc.) that her nurses do these instead of Dr Barsky and you actually have one main nurse as your point of contact, which makes sense when you think about it, that she can't do all of these for all patients herself, but maybe mentioning this at the start would have avoided the slight disappointment. Which was unfounded, because her nurses are great too!!
If you bump into her in the clinic, she always has time for you and often came into those scans anyway. You always knew the final decision of dosage changes etc were always hers and that she'd be doing the main procedures (retrieval and transfer) herself.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
2 small ones - as mentioned, your main contact and most face time will be with one of her nurses, not directly with her. Which I think makes sense and Ashlee, the nurse we worked with, was amazing and always available: night, day, weekends, she was great! But maybe a mention of this up front.
Second small piece of expectation management on the amount of time it all takes. This is caveated with the fact I am a hugely impatient person(!!) but I seem to remember Dr Barsky mentioned 6-8 weeks at the start. Maybe I misunderstood and this was only one piece of the process. But we first met her in early March, with all initial tests, blood work etc done, and we transferred our embryo June 15th, 14 weeks later... Which in the grand scheme of a baby's life really no big deal, but again some upfront expectation management would have eased my impatient streak and allowed us to plan our summer more easily.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Barsky is wonderful - extremely warm, personable, smart, funny (when the time's right for a giggle!), she felt like an incredibly capable, close friend. You can tell that she (and all of her wonderful office staff) genuinely care and are invested in your journey. I had a very different experience at another clinic, where there I truly felt like a number, Dr Barsky's approach was the opposite!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Ashlee (+ Kelsey))
Ashlee (and Kelsey!) were fantastic, again super personable and you felt they were invested and truly cared about your journey. Ashlee gave me her cell number and she would respond evenings, weekends, even on Facetime at 9pm at night sat in the car after picking her kids up, she had all the time in the world to chat us through our injections that night. I could text her with any question, at any time, which was extremely comforting.

Describe Maya Barsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
I was fine with it, I think the potential (albeit small) risks for multiple pregnancies for both mother and babies speak for themselves.
You cannot ask any questions from the doctor [Dr. Maya Barsky]; there is no direct communication at all. I paid an extra 200$ (after 20K for the IVF cycle) to get a consultation with her after I got the news about 2 mature eggs. Dr. Barsky never showed me any similar cases or told me anything specific. She sounds like a textbook without understanding what is the case.
I choose this clinic [Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] because they are a small family business. After my horrible experience, I contacted the clinic owner but never got a response. Avoid small clinics, as they don't have enough patients to know all the specifics. In this clinic, there is no online system, so you should remember and write down your appointments, your medication dosage
How was your experience with Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
My husband and I are both less than 30, healthy, and active. No smokers, never during, healthy eaters. We could not get pregnant naturally. It was unexplained; the only low result we got was a borderline AMH.
We started our IVF with Dr. Barsky to ensure we would have a chance for 3 kids. All the ultrasounds are performed by nurse practitioners, never by the doctor. You cannot ask any questions from the doctor; there is no direct communication at all. She chooses an average protocol for me, not for borderline AMH. I had 2 leading follicles during the first ultrasound; nevertheless, Dr. Barsky decided to start the IVF. It got us only 6 eggs, 2 mature, and 0 embryos.
Dr. Barsky had no idea why we failed this cycle. I paid 200$ to get a consultation with her after I got the news about 2 mature eggs. When I learned we got No embryos, Dr. Barsky didn't even care to reach me. I was leaving messages through reception, and finally, she contacted me 3 days later.
We asked many questions, including why she didn't cancel the cycle. I got a short answer that it is not possible. Later on, I got a second opinion from a different doctor, and he showed me that there was no chance of getting enough eggs that cycle because of the 2 leading follicles. And it was visible during the first ultrasound. What is funny, I asked the nurse during the first ultrasound if everything was good enough or if we should cancel the cycle.
She only has a few patients, so I can think of one explanation, she is not experienced with different cases. She never showed me any similar cases or told me anything specific. D. Barsky sounds like a textbook without understanding what the reasoning is.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
So, my lesson cost me 20K. And being 29 years old at the beginning of this IVF journey, it is tough to get such a failed cycle because of one mistake of the doctor. I hope that someone can avoid my mistakes and choose a different doctor.

Describe the protocols Maya Barsky used in your cycles at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I was on Gonal-F 225 UI, Menopur 150 UI daily
And on day 8 of my cycle, she increased Gonal-F to 300 UI
Added Fyremadel to avoid ovulation starting on day 7
And for the triggers Leuprodile + Ovidrel on Day 11 of the cycle

She is doing only single embryo transfers
What specific things went wrong at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Lost paperwork
Lost appointments
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
You should pay upfront for everything, for IVF and embryo transfer. The payment department is horrible. I am trying to get back my unused funds with no result
She [Dr. Maya Barsky] did a great job of adjusting care based on what my need was for the element we were working on. She would walk me through all the details upfront and then per my request when actually doing things like scraping my uterine wall I thought less detail would be better so she would give less detail...she never made us feel dumb for asking a FAQ or to repeat anything, she had great bedside manner.
[Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] Strengths are absolutely having male and female fertility together. We essentially had to do ivf due to male infertility. Only con at the clinic is communication on the male side is a little less thoughtful...[nurses] Super dream team! Answered everything quickly and thoroughly...We are SO grateful that we went with Dr. Barsky and honestly the clinic overall!

Describe the protocols Maya Barsky used in your cycles at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I had a polyp removal. Following the results of which I had to take some pills placed in my vag. The purpose was to eliminate the illness.
For retrieval we had a series of medicines based and the amount was typically the same but the start of the third daily shot was dependent on the blood work/results of looking at follicle growth.
For transfer it was a combination of patches and shots. I had to continue those until 10 weeks and can say it was beneficial having these performance enhancing medicines. The purpose was to get to the point that the placenta can take care.

Describe your experience with Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Strengths are absolutely having male and female fertility together. We essentially had to do ivf due to male infertility.
Only con at the clinic is communication on the male side is a little less thoughtful. They called after surgery where we got sperm to tell us he had an even more rare issue-that concerned us there was an issue but then they confirmed nothing changed it was just more of a miracle they got sperm.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
All in we spent about $40k across my husbands surgery/tests along with my surgery then egg retrieval and implanting.
Describe Maya Barsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
I think they are smart to assess the patient and only do 1 unless there is a medical need.
We are so thankful that Dr. Barsky was in our corner every step of the way throughout this wild journey. During our first consultation, my husband and I knew that Dr. Barsky was the best specialist for us. Not only was she incredibly knowledgeable with evidence based research, she radiated compassion and kindness at every visit. We really appreciated how Dr. Barsky had the most wonderful bedside manner, but was also able to deliver information realistically. We are expecting our first baby and will be forever grateful to Dr. Barsky and her team for their role in this miracle. We only wish Dr. Barsky could continue to be our doctor throughout this pregnancy!

Trust the process! Always have open communication with the team, they have GOT you!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Going through the IVF process was one of the most vulnerable things we have ever done. We developed such a trusting relationship with Dr. Barsky and her team over the past 7 months and truly felt supported at every turn.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Ashlee Bates, NP)
Our nurse practitioner Ashlee was a saint throughout this process! She answered a million emails, texts and phone calls from me during this process. We went to her office for several ultrasounds and check ups throughout IVF and she did a very thorough exam each time. I will forever be thankful for the relationship we built with Ashlee!

After one video call with Dr Barsky my husband and I felt confident that she was the person to proceed with. I really liked the way she explained things and felt like she provided a lot of knowledge in a way that was clear and firm when it needed to be but was not fear mongering...you might not see the doctor every visit. We were ok with that/ didn't really need to see her every time (her team took great care of us) and if we were doing more intense treatment that might have been different. So I encourage people to just ask what their typical level of interaction with the doctor will be if that's something that is important to them.
It [Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] was a clean well run clinic. Its also a smaller modest clinic in not the fanciest part of town, but I actually appreciated this...The process with Dr. Barksys office felt very personal along the way. It was easy to get in touch with a nurse with any questions I had. When I did get a positive pregnancy test, I called to let them know and they were genuinely excited for me and set up an early ultrasound to help make sure everything was progressing ok.
How was your experience with Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
We first met with Dr Barsky after over a year of trying naturally. I really wanted to try to have a baby naturally and was doing a lot of acupuncture etc. It became pretty clear during the process that I had PCOS and might not be ovulating naturally. My OBGYN was encouraging Femara or Clomid but I was being stubborn. She also said I could talk to a fertility doctor if I preferred to go that route and referred a couple clinics. I read through them and noticed Dr Barsky specialized in PCOS. After one video call with Dr Barsky my husband and I felt confident that she was the person to proceed with. I really liked the way she explained things and felt like she provided a lot of knowledge in a way that was clear and firm when it needed to be but was not fear mongering. Dr. Barsky did an ultrasound and confirmed the poly cystic ovaries and recommended Femara for assisted ovulation and also asked if we wanted to do timed intercourse or IUI. We opted to try timed intercourse first. The way the ovulation dates timed out I actually had to go in on the weekend to get checked out so had to go to the other office but the nurses there were lovely and took a look and said everything looked good for trigger shot/ proceeding with intercourse....so that's what we did and I got pregnant with our precious baby boy on that first assisted try. So grateful to Dr. Barksy and her team!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Go ahead and start the conversation ASAP and get things going! Don't hesitate because you are nervous about the unknown. They will help you along the way. Also you might not see the doctor every visit. We were ok with that/ didn't really need to see her every time (her team took great care of us) and if we were doing more intense treatment that might have been different. So I encourage people to just ask what their typical level of interaction with the doctor will be if that's something that is important to them.

When I called my OBGYNs office to make a later appt with them post-positive pregnancy test, the person on the other line simply said, 'whats your name and phone number'. Marked difference for someone experiencing their first pregnancy and needing support/ guidance
Describe the protocols Maya Barsky used in your cycles at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I touched on this already in previous paragraph, and it has been a little while now, but this is what I remember....I have PCOS and irregular periods and when I was finally ready to get started was still waiting for a period, so they prescribed something (I think progesterone?) to make me have a period, and then Femara (a breast cancer drug that is used off-label for fertility apparently) to suppress estrogen to help prepare my eggs for ovulation. Then at a certain time point they did an ultrasound to look at eggs to see if they were ready for ovulation and I had two that had grown large enough to be released so they gave me a trigger shot (if I remember correctly this came to me in the mail and I had to take to the clinic to be injected?) and told me when to have intercourse. My husband was actually out of town at the time so I flew out to be with him. Then we just had to wait to take a pregnancy test. Dr. Barsky's office told me what day to take the test and it turned out to be fathers day and that's when we found out I was pregnant!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
All of the nurses were wonderful and very easy to access with any questions. I believe Theresa? was our nurse and she was who we saw throughout the process and who I contacted with questions. Two other nurses at the other office (unfortunately I don't remember their names) were the ones who over the weekend assessed my eggs and injected the trigger shot etc and they were wonderful too. Everyone very kind and caring
Describe your experience with Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
It was a clean well run clinic. Its also a smaller modest clinic in not the fanciest part of town, but I actually appreciated this because I think if the clinic felt too fancy or slick I might have personally had concerns they were overcharging their patients or something (but that's how my mind works)
Describe the costs associated with your care under Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
I believe it was like $200 for the initial consultation and $150 or so for follow up visits and there were probably 3 of those? This was in 2021
Dr. Barsky made me feel comfortable and was wonderful to work with. She has a warm bedside manner and is great with communication...She explained every test and procedure to me in detail, as requested. From our first meeting with her, she answered every question I had before I even got a chance to ask them...We did (3) rounds of IVF ICSI with PGT testing and froze all day 5 embryos...
Austin Fertility and Reproductive Medicine was wonderful to work with. We worked with both the male and female sides of the clinic. My husband had a successful MicroTESE procedure with Dr. Parviz Kavoussi. I had (3) rounds of IVF ICSI and a successful FET with Dr. Maya Barsky. The staff at all the offices were friendly, easy to work with, and informative. The offices are all modern and use state of the art technology. The clinic was always very good at communicating appointment reminders, billing, and procedure information.

From our first meeting with her, she answered every question I had before I even got a chance to ask them! My partner and I feel that we have found the best doctor to give us our greatest chance of success with. We truly believe that if it weren't for Dr. Barsky and her team, we would not be where we are today (pregnant with our first baby).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
If you want to know why something is being recommended, alternatives to the treatment/procedure, and the data behind the science, do not be afraid to ask her. Dr. Barsky will gladly answer all of your questions and give you additional information, to help you make an informed decision.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Barsky and her whole team were wonderful to work with. We felt like they really cared about us as individuals and were rooting for our success the entire time. We had some setbacks along the way but they were there to reassure us. They gave us the information that we needed to feel comfortable and confident with our decisions. Dr. Barsky has a warm bedside manner and genuinely cares about her patients.
Describe the protocols Maya Barsky used in your cycles at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We did (3) rounds of IVF ICSI with PGT testing and froze all day 5 embryos. We then had (1) successful day 5 frozen embryo transfer and are keeping the remaining embryos frozen. For my first (2) egg retrieval cycles I was on FSH 150 IU daily (Gonal-F), Menopur 75 IU daily, Cetrotide 0.25 daily, and Lupron trigger shot. The last round of IVF we decreased my Gonal to 75 IU daily and I had a very similar response. We were doing IVF for male factor infertility, so Dr. Barsky was able to lower my medication dosage without any negative repercussions. For our embryo transfer i was on (3) estrogen patches and nightly progesterone in oil injections. I continued the PIO injections and estrogen patches up until 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Theresa was wonderful to work with. She is very approachable and friendly. She was always available to take my call or answer an email in between appointments. Our insurance did not cover fertility treatments, so we paid out of pocket for all expenses. For a MicroTESE procedure, (3) rounds of IVF ICSI with PGT testing, (1) ERA, and (1) successful FET we spent an estimated $50,000. We are paying $500/year for additional storage of our remaining embryos.
Describe Maya Barsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
We chose to transfer a single embryo because of my age (31) and low number of PGT normal embryos.
Dr. Barsky has an excellent bedside manner and was very thorough in our treatment plan. She gave us hope and calmed our fears through every step of our journey. She listened to all my questions and provided answers that didn’t feel rushed...She would only transfer one embryo...She provided research to back up her advice and listened to any concerns I had...You may not visit with her every visit but she is still responsive to questions through her Physicians Assistant.
It’s a small clinic [Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine], they’re very responsive and organized. Describe the protocols Maya Barsky used in your cycles at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For retrieval we used gonal-f, menupur, and eventually ganirelix. I was monitored every few days with stims and medications were adjusted accordingly. I was given cabergoline to prevent OHSS and did not get it. I planned to do an ERA but that was cancelled because my estrogen was still too high post retrieval and my lining was too thin. For my FET we did a natural cycle. I naturally ovulate late but they still monitored me early so I had to go in every other day for a week until my lining and hormones were finally ready. We did a trigger shot and then started on PIO shots and did our transfer about a week later. So far it has resulted in a successful pregnancy.

17,000 for egg retrieval and 6,000 for transfer plus 250 per visit.
Describe Maya Barsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
She would only transfer one embryo. We understood her decision.
Dr Barsky was kind, considerate, direct and informative on my results, and regarding the process for my egg fertilization and retrieval. She would make sure to keep me informed on my results, and frequently check in to make sure I was handling the process okay. She is extremely smart, and knowledgeable which was so helpful in clarifying things I had questions on and made difficult concepts very easy to understand. She was present at every visit, and never made me feel rushed, rather would treat me like she would a family member. She has really great bedside manner. 10/10 Would recommend her to family and friends.

This process can be very complicated with many moving parts and not always have the desired outcome; but having good communication regarding the process, expectations and results with someone trustworthy and on your side, like Dr Barsky, it makes the process much easier to go through.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Maya Barsky at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Barsky spoke to me in a kind, gentle and very educated manner but phrased it in a way that was easily understandable. She reassured me and would clarify any questions I had regarding complicated concepts, and did not make me feel bad if I had to have her repeat things she had already discussed with me/informed me about on things I needed additional clarification on. She did not feel rushed and took her time at each of her visits
Describe the protocols Maya Barsky used in your cycles at Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Meds I used:
- Cetrotide 0.25 mg #5
- Gonal-f 300 pen #2
- Gonal-f 900 pen #1
- Menopur #10
- Lupron 4mg #1
We had about 4 ultrasounds in a cycle; I did about 2 weeks of injections as I was not responding as intensely to the medications, for which we were able to adjust accordingly. I was successful in egg retrieval at the end of the cycles.

The medications were the most costly portion of this process; I did need to extend my treatment out as. I was not responding to the first set of medications as expected which did add to the costs
Dr. Barsky is an amazing physician. She is compassionate and kind. She makes each appointment feel like you are sitting with a friend while simultaneously providing complicated medical information in an easily consumable way. I felt completely at ease with her throughout the entirety of the process. She is reliable and will respond quickly...She made me feel optimistic while remaining grounded about probabilities. She is highly competent and I would recommend her to everyone!
