How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
I started seeing Dr. Chu after my first doctor left the RMA clinic, and I couldn't be happier with my choice to go with her!
I have DOR and started seeing Dr. Chu after I had already done 3 egg retrievals with my previous doctor, one of which was through a clinical trial for poor responders, and had 3 euploid embryos banked. Given that we ideally wanted 2 children and only had 3 hard-fought-for embryos, Dr. Chu understood how important it was to try to get each transfer right.
My first transfer resulted in successful implantation but ended in miscarriage. I wanted ANSWERS as to what could have gone wrong and what we could try differently next time. Dr. Chu very patiently answered my questions and talked through the pros and cons of different tests we could do and treatment changes we could consider. When I would come to her with a paper I'd found on Google Scholar, she was always aware of the latest research, and honest when there wasn't a solid research consensus yet on a given topic. When I suggested possible tests or treatments for myself, Dr. Chu would give me a thorough explanation of why she did or didn't recommend it for me in my particular case, and I always felt like we came to consensus. I ultimately felt satisfied with every decision we made.
Though the result of my first transfer was heartbreaking and the recovery was long, I really felt supported by Dr.Chu throughout.
When it came to my second transfer, at the first attempt, conditions were borderline but not quite right (thin lining). I had a gut feeling that something wasn't right and I didn't want to waste a precious embryo on a cycle that didn't feel right. But I also didn't want to waste the cycle (it was semi-medicated, so I had lots of monitoring and 2 good looking follicles). Dr. Chu let me convert it to an IUI cycle at literally the last possible minute so that I could feel like we were trying something productive without wasting a banked embryo.
At the next attempt at Transfer #2, we also had borderline but slightly better conditions (lining was still on the thin side, but trilaminar and more stable from one appointment to the next), so we proceeded. I'm holding the baby that resulted from that transfer in my arms right now.
Even in my successful pregnancy, I had a lot of anxiety based on my past experiences (I'd had 2 prior pregnancies with no live birth to show for it) and Dr. Chu was extremely kind and thoughtful about allowing me to come in for frequent monitoring until I graduated the clinic.
Overall, I can't recommend Dr. Chu highly enough. She is smart, knowledgeable, honest, and communicative. I believe she gave me the best treatment possible in sometimes difficult circumstances. I trust her completely and would absolutely go back to her if I decide to pursue treatment again.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Ask all your questions! She will be happy to answer them thoroughly and thoughtfully.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
I can't say enough positive things about how Dr. Chu treated me and how personal the attention I received was. She always called me personally on my cell phone to go over results - good and bad - and took the time to thoughtfully answer my questions. And I am the type of patient who has done a lot of research on my own and comes in with tons of questions, so I'm sure that was no easy task! She never tried to push me off to get to the next patient, even when it was supposed to be a quick results call rather than an official appointment; she always talked through things with me as long as I wanted.
My first transfer ended in miscarriage; it was a complicated pregnancy and had a complicated recovery. As we monitored that pregnancy (my single embryo split into twins, but only 1 ever had a heartbeat and neither made it past week 7), Dr. Chu was so kind. With the first bad ultrasound, she called me and sounded almost as heartbroken as I was. She was honest about our chances at every point. When I wanted frequent monitoring, she got me in for frequent monitoring. Every step of the way, Dr. Chu listened to my concerns and advocated for me. When it turned out that I had some stubborn retained tissue after my first D&C, Dr. Chu pulled for me to get appointments in with the top surgeon as quickly as possible to have another D&C and then an operative hysteroscopy (procedures that I've heard can have extremely long wait times at other clinics or with other doctors).
Because I have DOR and am a very poor responder (at age 33, I got 2-3 eggs per retrieval over 3 retrievals) it's hard for me to get embryos. Given how difficult it was to make euploid embryos and how few embryos we had to work with, Dr. Chu understood how precious each transfer attempt was in order to get it right. When it came down to decisions about whether to proceed with a transfer or not given borderline conditions (thin lining), Dr. Chu gave me her best recommendation based on the data, my history, and the literature, but left the ultimate decision up to me, which I really appreciated.
Ultimately, I felt extremely supported and empowered by Dr. Chu.
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
Dr. Chu gave me the choice between a fully medicated transfer protocol or a semi-medicated ("natural") transfer protocol. She fully laid out the pros and cons of each, but noted that they have similar successful outcome rates, which is why she ultimately left the decision to me. I had a strong preference for semi-medicated/natural because I was still ovulating on my own in predictable cycles, but I didn't trust my body to respond appropriately to estrogen/progesterone (I'd previously ovulated through estradiol medication and menstruated through progesterone medication).
Though my first transfer didn't result in live birth, it did result in implantation, so it was an effective transfer protocol.
After the first transfer resulted in miscarriage, Dr. Chu helped me do a relatively full workup before trying again. We looked at the secondary PGT-A testing results of uncertain clinical significance; it turned out that (blind to both me and Dr Chu) the embryo we had transferred had been mosaic rather than fully euploid. We also did RPL testing to look for possible immunologic and other factors that could impact success, as well as karyotyping to rule out balanced translocations. We investigated the status of my uterus through a hysteroscopy and SIS. We did an endometrial biopsy to look for endometritis. Some tests we talked through but chose NOT to do were ReceptivaDX and sperm DNA fragmentation testing (both were not indicated by prior history and, if abnormal, still would not have resulted in any changes to my treatment plan; if I were truly concerned about endometriosis, a laparoscopy would be the way to check, but it really wasn't indicated in my case) and endometrial receptivity analysis (also not indicated by my history, as I'd had successful implantation, and the emerging evidence doesn't suggest ERAs improve outcomes at all).
For my second transfer, we added Menopur to the semi-medicated protocol to try to stimulate additional estrogen production from my own follicular development. We also used Ganirelix to prevent premature ovulation. We decided to cancel the transfer and convert to IUI when my lining was not cooperating.
For my next transfer attempt (which was ultimately successful), I added Benadryl and baby aspirin to my protocol. I also took over the counter supplements of Vitamin E and L-arginine to try to improve my lining.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Overall, I was pretty happy with the nursing staff. My primary nurse was very good and called with results very consistently. However, she was frequently on vacation, which I don't begrudge her (get it!!) but made my care feel a little more interrupted.
Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Overall, I was extremely happy with RMA of NJ.
I've heard it said that RMA can be like a factory. Honestly, that's both its strength and its weakness, but I think more strength than weakness. Factory has a negative connotation, but mostly it means it's highly reliable and efficient.
One time my cycle happened to fall on Christmas. RMA was open and ready to take me! Another time, my transfer date (in fact, the transfer that resulted in my son) fell during a huge snowstorm. RMA was open and ready to take me! That reliability is huge and so appreciated, especially when I hear horror stories from other smaller clinics about shutting down for holidays and treatment interrupted.
I could count on monitoring to happen on a consistent, reliable schedule. I'd reliably get a phone call with the results from monitoring that same day.
The small downside of the factory approach does mean that you're not always seeing YOUR doctor at every monitoring visit, and the nurse coordinator rather than the doctor serves as your main point of contact. However, for me, that's an absolutely worthwhile trade. I'd rather know that a doctor is available to see me exactly when it's needed, even if it's not my doctor! And my doctor would always follow up with me at her convenience later on; I still felt well-cared for and received personalized attention.
As for treatment - I trust that RMA is using evidence-based practices based on the most recent cutting-edge research, including some research they've done themselves.
I felt confident I was receiving the best treatment possible even though I was a "tricky" case that some clinics might have rejected to protect their stats. (I have DOR and am a poor responder; some clinics wouldn't let me proceed to an egg retrieval with only 2 mature -looking follicles, but RMA did and one of those resulting eggs resulted in my son!)
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I thought Dr. Chu's and RMA's approach to elective single embryo transfer made a lot of sense. Given that my first transfer resulted in an embryo split (i.e., would have been identical twins had the pregnancy succeeded) thank goodness I didn't transfer more embryos than that! Now that I've been faced with a twin pregnancy, I'm a lot more cognizant of the risks to both mother AND to the pregnancy itself (vanishing twin is very common and very heartbreaking).
Even if you're not focused on avoiding multiples, I think about it like this: a multiple embryo transfer might increase your chances of success for THAT transfer, but a single embryo transfer maximizes your chances of success per embryo. Given that it's harder and more expensive to create embryos for most people than to transfer them, maximizing success per embryo is almost always the smart way to go!
What specific things went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Failed to call with results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
The team that orders medications to your pharmacy is separate from your nurse, but your nurse coordinator is your point of contact. So sometimes, in trying to communicate between your pharmacy, your insurance, your nurse coordinator, and the meds team, a needed prescription could get lost in translation. I definitely recommend keeping on top of making sure you get your meds on time ahead of a cycle; if you haven't heard anything from your pharmacy and you expected to, follow up.
Dr. Chu was empathetic and listened to my needs and wants...didn’t hesitate to set the right expectations even when it wasn’t necessarily what I wanted to hear...lets me make my own decisions and supports me...ensures I’m fully educated and provides her own recommendations
[At RMA of New Jersey, it is} Very easy to make an appointment. Minimal wait times on day of appointment...generally run on schedule. Great communication- very fast test results... Good after hours response when I needed support. They assign a financial coordinator which is very helpful to level set expectations
How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Dr. Chu was empathetic and listened to my needs and wants, but she also didn’t hesitate to set the right expectations even when it wasn’t necessarily what I wanted to hear. I can trust her to be realistic and informative. She lets me make my own decisions and supports me in them but first she ensures I’m fully educated and provides her own recommendations
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Be completely open and honest about your circumstances and what you want. Talk about all your concerns. Dr Chu will not judge you
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Dr. Chu was attentive and was prepared each time she saw me. I didn’t have to repeat or remind her of details from previous visits. She came across as very caring
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
I did IUI and I had to use a trigger shot to trigger ovulation. That’s all I remember

Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Very easy to make an appointment. Minimal wait times on day of appointment. They generally run on schedule. Great communication- very fast test results. They do all the tests and blood work onsite. Good after hours response when I needed support. They assign a financial coordinator which is very helpful to level set expectations. You can also go to multiple locations to get your blood work done which is convenient since I work closer to a different location than the one by my home.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I have insurance coverage but still ended up paying a few things out of pocket in addition to copays. My HSG was over $1000. I think I spent at least $3000, maybe more
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Dr. Chu did not want to do multiple embryo transfer
What specific things went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
When I used RMA the first time, everything was great. Now that I am using them a second time, I had to do another HSG. My nurse did not clearly communicate when I should begin my antibiotics (ie before HSG or after) so I had to take two cycles of antibiotics. I think the nurse assumed I would remember how things worked from the last time I was there before I had my daughter
I felt Dr. Chu was very personable...She explained what I should expect next and potential complications that could arise...She talked me through the process of checking my ovarian reserve, was transparent about my results, and explained the next steps with which treatment would be the best for me...nothing about my sexuality or situation gave me the impression that she was uncomfortable or that I should seek help somewhere
So far, I am very pleased with my experience [at RMA of New Jersey]. Everyones Ive spoken with will share information that have, their journey and experience with infertility and/or pregnancy...Lisa is the main nurse that Ive communicated with. She takes the time to speak to me, write in the portal, and keeps me up to date on my results and next steps. I never feel pressured to rushed in our communication.
How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
I felt Dr. Chu was very personable. I didn't feel rushed to hurry my appointment. As questions came to mind, she took the time to research for me and explain my options. She explained what I should expect next and potential complications that could arise. I was able to walk away with a ton of information to look into.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
If you have questions, write them down. It's best to have all concerns listed to get as much information during your visits.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
My visits with Dr. Chu made me feel like a human. We sat in private room and held a legitimate conversation. Not strictly about the process but about me, my fears, her experience in todays society, and my history. I felt so comfortable and safe.
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
I was diagnosed with endometriosis in my early 20's which resulted in the removal of an ovary. I had a lot of fear and pressure about my age and trying to have a child. She talked me through the process of checking my ovarian reserve, was transparent about my results, and explained the next steps with which treatment would be the best for me.
How competent was Micheline Chu at LGBTQ+ care?
Yes, nothing about my sexuality or situation gave me the impression that she was uncomfortable or that I should seek help somewhere else.

I haven't gotten to the expensive part yet.
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Dr. Chu was extremely personable and kind when we went to our initial visit. I do recommend her, but I very rarely spoke to or saw her after the initial consultation. 90% of my interactions were with the nurses and my IUIs, egg retrieval, and monitoring appointments were all with other doctors...My egg retrieval was an antagonist protocol with hcg trigger since my estrogen levels were very high.
I was constantly Googling about medication, scheduling, side effects, etc because the nurses never told me anything in advance or explained why I was being prescribed certain meds or coming in for monitoring...RMA has many locations and opens at 6am, with weekend hours at the Basking Ridge location. I do recommend her, but I very rarely spoke to or saw her after the initial consultation. 90% of my interactions were with the nurses and my IUIs, egg retrieval, and monitoring appointments were all with other doctors. I am not done with my IVF cycle, so I cannot say whether I had success with her or not, but so far I am happy with results since my egg retrieval did result in healthy embryos.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Don't be afraid to reach out to the nurse with questions. Keep in mind that you will likely not interact with Dr. Chu much throughout the process. The upside is that RMA is a very well-oiled machine and the appointments are quick and at convenient times.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
I was constantly Googling about medication, scheduling, side effects, etc because the nurses never told me anything in advance or explained why I was being prescribed certain meds or coming in for monitoring. I felt like everything was a mystery until it happened. I was constantly asking questions and begging for information that should have been provided up front.
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
Both IUIs were unsuccessful - letrozole + ovidel trigger. My egg retrieval was an antagonist protocol with hcg trigger since my estrogen levels were very high.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I had 2 different nurses during my time at RMA. They communicated regularly because they had to provide almost daily updates while undergoing monitoring. However, I got very little substantive information about why I was receiving certain treatments and how to plan ahead. It was more like, "hi, take this injection tonight. take this pill tomorrow." I want to know why I am being prescribed certain medications, how long I will be on them for, what the next couple weeks look like. I felt like every day was a surprise during my IUI and egg retrieval cycle.
Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
RMA has many locations and opens at 6am, with weekend hours at the Basking Ridge location. You will be going there almost daily during an IUI or IVF cycle, so this is something to keep in mind.
I think they are one of the busiest, if not busiest, clinics in NJ. Experience is so important when it comes to certain aspects of fertility treatment. Although it can sometimes feel like a factory, I did find comfort in knowing that the doctor and embryologist had done this so many times before. You want someone who really knows what they are doing when they are making those embryos!
I did find myself wanting more information at almost every step of the process, starting with the financial aspect. Initially I had only partial insurance coverage and it was very difficult to get a final dollar amount. We are talking about serious money, yet the financial coordinator would only give very broad estimates. Our main issue was MFI, yet no one encouraged us to see a urologist, nor did they ever bring up different abstinence periods, for example, or the impact of high DNA fragmentation. I had to do my own homework, so be prepared.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Morning monitoring was convenient and generally pretty quick (30 min). On a few occasions, it was very busy but still only about 1 hour total at the office.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I had excellent IUI/IVF coverage. IUI was only copays. IVF I paid for embryo biopsy and embryo genetic testing out of pocket for a total of approximately $7k. This was optional.
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
she [Dr. Micheline Chu] was very detached from my care. I didn't feel she was creative and curtailing therapy specifically to me...I fell into one bucket and was prescribed the meds for that bucket. She didn't take genuine interest in me as an individual and curtailing therapy to me specifically. I was a number. I felt a little bit of care after a few failed cycles but I honestly don't know if it was "me" as an individual that she cared about or that she was disappointed she wasn't successful in her care...I pushed for different medications and I had much better success than the first. The second cycle I was on a microflare protocol and the third on a microflare protocol with clomid. I had the best cycle with the third.
Office visits [at RMA of New Jersey] are fast and efficient. They deal with such high volume that they have pretty good processes in place for funneling patients through on a daily basis. Weaknesses - You're a number. Neither physicians nor nursing staff will take genuine interest in you as an individual. That means your care protocol will come from one of a few predesignated buckets, unless you push for more. You will NEVER have access to your doctor directly. You will always have to speak to a nurse or set an appointment if you have a concern that you would like to speak to your doctor about. If you want someone to actually care about you as an individual this is likely not the clinic to go to.
How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
The very short answer is Dr. Chu is smart and friendly, IF and when you get to speak with her. But don't count on the warm and fuzzies or feeling like someone cares about you. She has great schooling and credentials. I didn't feel a sincere concern from her. I don't want to be mean but she was very detached from my care. I didn't feel she was creative and curtailing therapy specifically to me. I felt RMANJ had therapy protocols and I fell into one bucket and was prescribed the meds for that bucket. She didn't take genuine interest in me as an individual and curtailing therapy to me specifically. I was a number. I felt a little bit of care after a few failed cycles but I honestly don't know if it was "me" as an individual that she cared about or that she was disappointed she wasn't successful in her care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Challenge her. Do your research and be your own advocate. Ask her for different treatment options and her opinion on them. She won't think outside the box for your care so you have to seek it yourself and maybe she will agree on your thoughts and implement it. Set appointments and have her speak with you. Schedule the time otherwise she will be in a rush to get off the phone. I can't stress enough to ask questions and be your own advocate for creative care and testing otherwise you will fall into a protocol bucket and be successful or not.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
I felt like a number at RMANJ for the following reasons:
1. The first nurse I was assigned would literally sigh when answering my calls and on several occasions missed critical points in my care necessitating me to call and follow up.
2. Having had such a bad experience with the nurse I asked the doctor for her email. I was trying to improve the impersonal experience I was having with a grumpy nurse. Dr. Chu would never provide me her email let alone phone number. I had NO avenue to ever contact my doctor directly. All questions about my care had to go through a third party (nurse) who could care less about my care. I was one of the 200 patients she was dealing with at one time.
3. Of the three calls I received with my pregnancy test results NOT A SINGLE ONE was from my dedicated nurse. The calls always came from a complete stranger.
4. Nurses got changed mid-cycle without my opinion or consultation. I had three cycles and roughly six to seven nurses over that time. Most nurses at least let me know they were changing. One got promoted and never told me. I got a call from a random nurse the next day telling me she is my new nurse when I never even know I lost my last one.
IVF is a trying time and a lot of details are involved in your care. When patients are thrown around like a hot potato I think it's easy to miss key details; not to mention theres ZERO relationship made and you're literally a number.
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
My first protocol I don't remember the name of but I will say that I did not get a whole lot of big follicles. Rather than cancel the protocol I was pushed through. Knowing what I know now I think that round should have been cancelled. We could have cancelled and tried again with another round of medications to see if the follicles would have come out bigger. I didn't and the cycle was a bit of a dud. The following two retrievals I pushed for different medications and I had much better success than the first. The second cycle I was on a microflare protocol and the third on a microflare protocol with clomid. I had the best cycle with the third.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Blair)
I don't remember all the "primary" nurses assigned to me throughout the course of my three retrieval cycles but here are the ones I dealth with most.
1. Blair - No longer with RMANJ - Atrocious, She would sigh when I called and lacked an sort of compassion whatsoever. This was impactful as it was my first cycle ever. She was also disorganized and missed key details in my care.
2. Josephine Z. - The best nurse I had in my entire experience at RMANJ. Kind, compassionate, friendly, smart and organized, She got pregnant and was out for a portion of my care but was excellent.
3. Merry D. - Smart, well versed in infertility experienced. I was disappointed when she got promoted and didn't take 30 seconds to email me that she would no longer be my nurse. I found that unprofessional.
4. So uninvolved I don't even remember her name.
5. Nicole B. - Friendly but unattached and didn't really care about my care. Just rather matter of fact and robotic providing instructions. Note: When receiving egg retreival and pregnancy test results I NEVER got a call from my primary nurse. It was always some random nurse. Literally every single time.
Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Strength - They supposedly have a good lab. Their facility is impressive and the OR setting is nice and well equipped. I would try to plan/hope my procedures are during the week. The weekday nursing staff in their OR is much more professional than the weekend staff. Office visits are fast and efficient. They deal with such high volume that they have pretty good processes in place for
funneling patients through on a daily basis.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Monitoring is done at certain times in the morning. Everyone shows up and the office runs through the cattle call. To be honest they are efficient and organized and it doesn't take too long. The nurses are friendly. The ultrasound may be a doctor or a PA. But it all goes quickly and efficiently.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I paid cash and it's not cheap.
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Chu doesn't like transfering multiple embryos, at least for my age group. She said there is more risk.
What specific things went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Failed to call with results
Failed to order appropriate test
Failed to send your chart to another clinic
Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
Provided conflicting information
Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
-Dr. Doherty did one of my transfers and it was a fiasco. He was rushed and the procedure was a bit of a mess.
- I asked for my results to be sent to a new clinic and it took like three requests before the entire thing was sent.
- I asked certain nurses to write a summary of certain action steps and they would just send me to medical records in order to not waste their time on little old me.
- I wasn't offered different creative options in my care
- I didn't have anything glaringly wrong so they didn't push for creative outside testing to figure out why we weren't getting ideal results. I had to push for different testing otherwise I was just pushed through.
[Dr. Chu] always remembered what we had discussed at previous appointments and would even discuss findings she noticed on ultrasounds from weeks prior...She thoroughly understands all of the ins and outs of infertility and will design a protocol specifically formulated for you...She was always very sweet and gave me all the confidence in the world that this was going to work and she was right
[for monitoring appointments at RMA of NJ] Go right when they open and you will be in and out. The lines can get pretty crazy especially at Basking Ridge on weekends as they’re the only office open for weekends/holidays...[my nurse] was always on top of everything (the meds, phone calls, appointments, follow ups etc.) and always gave me sound advice
How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Dr. Chu could’ve told me to eat dog poop and I would’ve done it. She is hands down the most intelligent doctor I’ve ever met. She thoroughly understands all of the ins and outs of infertility and will design a protocol specifically formulated for you. I don’t think she takes this job lightly and it truly feels like she puts her soul into her patients treatment. She always remembered what we had discussed at previous appointments and would even discuss findings she noticed on ultrasounds from weeks prior. I read a lot of reviews that said she was cold but I didn’t have that experience with her at all. She was always very sweet and gave me all the confidence in the world that this was going to work and she was right. It worked! After years of struggling with infertility she was able to finally get me pregnant. She was the only infertility doctor I’ve ever gone to and will continue to go to. Hands down the best infertility doctor in NJ and quite possibly the world.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?

RMA is a huge practice so I understand how some reviews say morning monitoring feels like a cattle call because I felt that way too but it’s effective and quick. Dr. Chu and all of the doctors I saw always treated me like human during the ultrasounds. Every single one of them were friendly, professional and most importantly extremely knowledgeable.
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
Follistim (whatever the max dose is) menopur, lupron, ganarellix, estrogen & PIO.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Jill)
Jill was amazing. She was always on top of everything (the meds, phone calls, appointments, follow ups etc.) and always gave me sound advice. I would message her on the portal and she would respond usually within 15 minutes. I’m sure I drove her crazy because some days I would send her multiple messages but she was always there ready to field my off the wall questions and never made me feel bad about it which was something I really appreciated. Having 2 failed IUIs I could feel her sadness through the phone telling me it was a negative pregnancy test and she was just as excited as I was when my FET was successful! If I ever requested to talk to Dr. Chu she would get the appointment setup immediately. I didn’t have much interaction with the care coordinators or other nurses but everyone at RMA was friendly.
Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
It’s a large clinic so at times you can feel like a number (specifically during morning monitoring) however, I don’t think there’s a clinic out there that wouldn’t be that way. I think it’s just the name of the game for fertility centers. RMA is the best of the best. All of the doctors are confident in their approach and extremely intelligent. I would recommend this clinic to any and everyone struggling to conceive. I wish I could continue to see them throughout my pregnancy.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Go right when they open and you will be in and out. The lines can get pretty crazy especially at Basking Ridge on weekends as they’re the only office open for weekends/holidays.
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
eSET. If a doctor is willing to transfer multiple - run.
Dr. Chu is truly invested in your success. She’s optimistic and realistic at the same time. She was empathetic and honest. I liked her a lot as a person and trusted her as a Dr. I just wish we would have had more face time. I didn’t most if my treatment communicating through my nurse rather than with Dr. Chu...Dr. Chu is smart, empathetic and great to work with. I really enjoyed the consults that we had any appointment that I had when she was on call. I only wish I had seen her more!
[RMA of NJ- Englewood clinic] Strengths: 1) Amazing success rates with IVF which I ended up not being a great candidate for. 2) Front deal staff is really nice. 3) wait times are not usually long. Weaknesses: 1) lack of face time with Dr sometimes made me feel like I was at a factory. 2) Englewood office was closed on weekends so I had to drive 45 minutes to Basking Ridge. 3) Push to move right to IVF with Donor Egg was overwhelming.
How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
I would recommend Dr. Chu 10/10 if she were in a small practice. I struggled with the lack of face time and personal communication at RMA. Dr. Chu is smart, empathetic and great to work with. I really enjoyed the consults that we had any appointment that I had when she was on call. I only wish I had seen her more!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?

Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
I am 43 and conceived my daughter naturally at 40, delivering at 41. I have a diminished Ovarian reserve, but otherwise unexplained secondary infertility. Because I conceived naturally on my own, we didn’t jump right into IVF. We did 4 IUI cycles with full stims. The first 2 were straight IUIs. The second 2 were option to convert to IVF if I produced 3 or more follicles.
I never produced more than 1-2 so all 4 were IUI. All 4 didn’t take.
Dr. Chu didn’t recommend moving to IVF with so few follicles because chances were so slim that we would get as far as implantation.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Sarah Robinson )
Sarah was great but it wasn’t the best experience not being able to talk to the Dr.
I don’t blame Sarah for that, it’s the RMA model.

Hooooo boy. We had no insurance coverage. IUI cycles were about $6,000 plus meds additional. Very pricey.
What specific things went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I had to ask a few times why the protocol had changed. It was implemented without my input.
Even though RMA is huge, Dr. Chu was always genuinely happy to see me or talk to me and never rushed me out of the room. She always remembered me and the things we talked about.... Initially, I wanted to transfer 2 embryos at a time. Dr. Chu talked us out of this because of all the potential complications. I’m very young and healthy so it’s not worth the risk.... I did an antagonist protocol with max doses of each medication.
RMANJ is the best of the best. Their labs and techniques are the top in the world. I trust everyone on the team thoroughly. The biggest shock was how many people are at morning monitoring. At first, I felt like a number but once I kept going back, I got really comfortable and got to know the staff well.... They were quick and efficient overall. There’s a lot of people there, but it’s not that bad. I was always out in less than 30 minutes.
How was your experience with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
She’s super nice and funny. She’s very thorough and happy to answer all questions. I didn’t get that experience from another doctor I consulted with at another clinic at all. I’ve always had full trust in Dr. Chu and her decisions during the IVF process.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Just trust her. She knows what she’s doing.

I did an antagonist protocol with max doses of each medication. We did this because my ovarian reserve is diminishing rapidly. We also did ICSI because my husband has a very low sperm count.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Merry)
Merry is always super sweet and willing to answer any questions I have. She’s been with the practice since the start and is so well versed with everything. She’s been a wonderful help through this process.

First cycle was covered by insurance aside from deductible. Our insurance changed and they did not cover our second egg retrieval cycle. It was around $20,000 out of pocket for everything. Transfer will be around $5,000.

Initially, I wanted to transfer 2 embryos at a time. Dr. Chu talked us out of this because of all the potential complications. I’m very young and healthy so it’s not worth the risk.
Dr Chu ultimately recommended that I have my fibroid surgically removed before doing any embryo transfer. She does not perform this surgery herself, so she referred me to another provider for this. I did not feel comfortable undergoing this surgery therefore I decided to get a second opinion.... She was very involved and each time I visited the clinic I got to speak with her in person. She speaks very quickly but it felt like that was just her personality.
Weakness: In the morning for monitoring, patients sit in the hallway lined up outside the door of the clinic [RMA of NJ] - it's sad/uncomfortable seeing these women sitting in a dimly light hallway on the FLOOR.... Strengths: I found it relatively easy to get in touch with Dr Chu and her staff when I had questions. They answer emails quickly.... There was no fee for the consultation. I paid several hundred dollars for the HSG procedure

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
Be prepared for her to speak very quickly and give you a lot of information. Bring a notepad and write things down since there is too much to remember at once. If she (or anyone else) recommends surgery, get a second opinion to be sure.

Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
She recommended doing a cycle of IVF for egg retrieval and PGS testing first to make sure I even have good embryos first, then proceeding with fibroid removal prior to doing any transfers. Because I was very hesitant to have fibroid removal surgery, she did give me an alternate option to do egg retrieval and transfer one embryo to try, but told me that if it fails she would not recommend doing any additional transfers until the fibroid is removed. I choose not to proceed with Dr Chu and went elsewhere.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Rhonda Minot)
Rhonda is well versed in infertility treatment, however she could come off abrasive at times. I do think it was coming from a place of care/concern, but my husband had a very difficult time with her style of communication.
Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Weakness: In the morning for monitoring, patients sit in the hallway lined up outside the door of the clinic - it's sad/uncomfortable seeing these women sitting in a dimly light hallway on the FLOOR. The Englewood NJ office does not to retrievals/transfers, so patients have to travel to southern NJ for those procedures.
Strengths: I found it relatively easy to get in touch with Dr Chu and her staff when I had questions. They answer emails quickly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
There was no fee for the consultation. I paid several hundred dollars for the HSG procedure to evaluate for tubal blockage (which indeed there was). The bloodwork was covered by insurance so I only paid the co-pay for that part.
Describe Micheline Chu's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
I did not get this far, but she told me she does eSET.
Dr Chu was very informative but not always the most compassionate. After my 1st failed IUI with her (3rd failed overall at that point) I asked about changing medications or protocols and she did not find it necessary. After my next IUI with her failed, I again asked from a change or if we could do some more diagnostics and was finally heard and repeat labs were drawn.... I was not offered any other diagnostics or protocols other than just moving on to IVF.
RMA is a large clinic so it was pretty easy to get lost in the shuffle. I did have good communication with my nurse and was able to speak with Dr Chu when I wanted to.... Getting to morning monitoring very early is crucial if you want to get in and out in a timely fashion. I showed up 25 min before the office opened and still would be waiting in a line for the doors to open....Julie was my primary nurse and was very good at getting in contact with me via phone calls or email.

After my next IUI with her failed, I again asked from a change or if we could do some more diagnostics and was finally heard and repeat labs were drawn. We increased my dose of gonal-f the next round but still were not successful. I do not have IVF coverage but still after each failed IUI, I was asked if I wanted to move forward with IVF. I felt this was a little insensitive. I was not offered any other diagnostics or protocols other than just moving on to IVF.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
She is very educated and informative but doesn't always have a lot of compassion so do not take it personally. Also, dont be afraid to advocate for yourself and things you may want explored further.

When seeing Dr Chu I was still considered "unexplained infertility". I did 3 rounds of IUI with gonal-f. First round, I did gonal-f 50mg with blood work and ultrasound monitoring every few days, followed by 2 days of IUI once follicles were deemed "mature." Second round, we followed the same protocol and dose of gonal-f. After our second round failed, I was begging for more diagnostics to try and see why it hasnt worked. They redrew the same day 3 labs as when we first started and we moved forward with another IUI. This round we did increase the gonal-f to 75mg followed by 2 back to back IUIs but again it failed.

I have insurance coverage for unlimited IUIs and diagnostics and just had to pay co-pays for my visits.
If you don’t mind straight forward advice and no fluff - yes. [Dr. Micheline Chu] smart and to the point...so far, has been great. I appreciate her candor. Although, I wish I could get ahold of her directly verses having to call my nurse, wait for a response then speak through the nurse. But, that’s RMA’s policy not the doctor’s...Dr. Chu and the rest of the team at Englewood do their best to treat you like a “human”.
RMA can feel like a cattle call. I do not find monitoring hours to be convenient...The AM time frames are exhaustingly early and strict. There is no wiggle room in their schedule because they see so many patients in a day. If you don’t mind straight forward advice and no fluff - yes. She’s smart and to the point. You need to understand what type of doctor you need prior to joining RMA. If you need more emotional support Dr. Cosantini may be a better fit, and she’s in the same location.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Micheline Chu at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey?
RMA can be very clinical - you do feel like a number there. Dr. Chu and the rest of the team at Englewood do their best to treat you like a “human”. Honestly, it depends on my mood. Many times I’m frustrated that I am there, dealing with this situation and there really is no amount of personable care that would make it feel less sterile. It’s the situation in itself that makes the process feel like this. I don’t believe Dr. Chu is responsible for my feelings though.
Describe the protocols Micheline Chu used in your cycles at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey and their degree of success.
I’ve done only medicated IUIs all according to our plan - but extended quantity wise due to Insurance requiring a “lesser vs. more” clause.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Lisa)
There were times I was frustrated by the nursing situation. Many times RMA runs like a well oiled Machine And you are expected to just trust your team. That is not my personality, and I like knowing the details and reasoning for each procedure/medicine adjustment. After explaining this and requesting my documented paperwork - I received more explicit detailed messages and feel happier about the situation. I also recently received a new nurse assignment and appreciate her style much more than my original assigned nurse.
Describe your experience with RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
RMA is the best in NJ. They have the best birth rates and I know three people who have beautiful babies because of their care.
RMA can feel like a cattle call. I do not find monitoring hours to be convenient since I still must travel a ways regardless of location. The AM time frames are exhaustingly early and strict. There is no wiggle room in their schedule because they see so many patients in a day. Just know you’ll be there 3+ times a week before dawn, and there will still be a line. I’m getting used to it though.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Basking Ridge once failed to document my medicated cycle. They also misplaced my bloodwork for DNA testing but later found it.
She has been very informative and helped me to know what would go on. I wanted to Move quick to get started and she was totally on board to work with what I wanted. She was eager to help. I appreciated her bedside manner. Always positive and comforting through everything I’ve done thus far.... We used an antagonist protocol. I was on 450 follistim with 20 hcg. Adding ganirelix. My trigger was .5 pregnyl and 40 lupron 12 hours apart
She [a nurse at RMA of NJ] was always great at getting back to me. Sometimes failed to provide me with results of bloodwork, husbands seaman analysis, but I never felt like it was detrimental to relationship with her.... I was always treated well and never wasted anytime within the facility. Everything ran very smoothly. all Of the Drs I saw were informative kind. All of the office staff were also great and helpful anytime I had a question when I called or while I’m clinic. They never wasted my time. Which I really appreciated.

Dr. Chu is very nice. She explained the risk and all with iuis. I talked more with Lisa, her nurse about procedures and answers all my questions and my concerns. I feel that dr. Chu is very brief unless I asked for explanations. She is very thorough with what I’ll expect and what’s the next step...1st iui - used only ovidrel 2nd and 3rd - folistim and ovidrel... just ask a lot of questions and don’t hesitate to ask everything you want to know.
Lisa [nurse practitioner at RMA of New Jersey] was very nice. She communicated with me and emailed me to answer my concerns and questions. She was very detailed especially with my blood work because I asked for it. She understands my feelings and concerns and communicated with sr. Chu as well...They are very organize which I loved. Ask a lot of questions and explanations. Not sure about other fertility doctors, but I’m use to doctors explaining everything to me and have a plan. They’re really just there to get you pregnant and figure out what is going on and what they can do to get you to point. But just ask a lot of questions and don’t hesitate to ask everything you want to know.
