Success w/ Doc Too early to know
She [Dr. Durso] is matter-of-fact with the combination of age, BMI, personal diagnosis, and predicted outcomes but that is something my husband and I need in our doctor. ... She would’ve stopped us after our 3rd IUI and moved us to IVF but we weren’t comfortable without one more try. She listened to us and gave it a 4th and final attempt. Now we are comfortable moving into IVF with ICSI since our attempts revealed MFI in addition to my PCOS.
From the moment we started going to the Fredericksburg SGF location, we felt welcomed and cared for. We are usually seen right at our scheduled appointment time, which I can’t say for most doctor’s offices. The entire staff - from the PAs/Administrative to the nursing staff to Dr.Durso - are the perfect fit for us. ... Our primary nurse is Andrea Williams and she is absolutely terrific. We always feel welcome in our office and she is an excellent listener and has the most compassionate heart. She is great with communication in person, over the phone, and in email.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at Shady Grove Fertility VMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
The only thing that may be considered a weakness to some is that Dr. Durso can be a bit socially awkward when it comes to small talk or casual conversation. She’s a great listener, though, if you like to chat. Regardless, when it’s time to talk treatment she really knows her stuff and gives you a clear plan and predicted outcomes, and we leave comfortable with every appointment we have with her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at Shady Grove Fertility VMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Be open and honest with her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nancy Durso at Shady Grove Fertility VMA (US Fertility Network clinic)?
Dr. Durso was very kind from our initial consultation and actively listened to what brought us to her for treatment. When I cried during the consult she simply paused, pushed a box of tissue to me and allowed me to get it out. Once I was done crying she asked if I was ready to continue. That was very kind and I did not feel judged. She is matter-of-fact with the combination of age, BMI, personal diagnosis, and predicted outcomes but that is something my husband and I need in our doctor.
Describe the protocols Nancy Durso used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility VMA (US Fertility Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Because of my PCOS we had to use Provera to jumpstart the first treatment, as well as Letrazole tablets because previous attempts with Clomid (at my former OBGYN) failed. We did 4 IUIs using Gonal-F and triggering with Ovidrel. I was also placed on progesterone suppositories and Estrace, both taken vaginally. None resulted in pregnancy but male factor infertility was revealed.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility VMA (US Fertility Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Andrea Williams)
Our primary nurse is Andrea Williams and she is absolutely terrific. We always feel welcome in our office and she is an excellent listener and has the most compassionate heart. She is great with communication in person, over the phone, and in email. Responses are always very timely. And if you’re a hugger, she gives good ones. We also meet with Nurse Rosie for most of our appointments and I can’t say enough good things about her either. She’s an excellent listener, very thorough with the scans and walks you through what she’s seeing. She is gentle with “Wanda” and makes the entire visit somehow not seem overly intrusive. Nurse Andrea and Nurse Rosie make you feel more like family...not a number.

The entire staff - from the PAs/Administrative to the nursing staff to Dr.Durso - are the perfect fit for us. Since our first consultation in December 2018, there has been only 1 appointment I can recall where there was a hiccup. There was a scheduling error and our appointment that we scheduled by phone didn’t make it into the system. It was a very busy time and we fault no one for this...especially with how it was handled. When we showed up, the person who we scheduled with said she didn’t see it in the system but she remembered talking with me about it and immediately apologized and asked me to wait a moment. She went to the back to let them know what happened and Dr. Durso herself came out and said she had back to back appointments but she’d still meet with us if we didn’t mind waiting. We waited and she saw us and answered all questions even past closing. TWO THUMBS UP for service!
Describe Nancy Durso's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility VMA (US Fertility Network clinic).
We have not yet undergone our first IVF round but I did ask if we would be able to transfer two embryos. Dr. Durso highly recommends only transferring one because it will ultimately be safer for mom and baby.

Initially Dr. Durso was engaging and kind, but after that first consultation it went down hill. She was compeltely emotionless and robotic. During my entire stimulation, she scheduled only two monitoring appointments. It was just strange and I did not feel well cared for. I found out at the end of treatment that she had left To another clinic out of town, which could explain why she didn’t seem involved at all during the treatment. The egg retrieval went well however and I had minimal pain.
The biggest advantage is the Med cost. You pick up your meds at the VCU pharmacy down the street from the clinic and it runs approximately $700-900 without insurance. Because it’s a teaching university clinic the care is not as attentive as a private clinic— you hardly ever reach anyone by phone, they are closed over major Holidays and they do batch retrieval’s. You don’t get medication/ protocol calendars or an assigned nurse. It’s very clinical and bare boned so to speak in general, without a lot of extra services.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Durso is quiet and has a strange demeanor. It may have been because she was leaving VCU, but her personality is a little bizarre and she wasn’t very engaged during treatment. I had high hopes for her after our first consult, but it went downhill after that.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
She is straightforward and not a warm and fuzzy type , if you don’t mind such a personality then she would be fine as a physician for you.

$11,500 fresh IVF cycle . $700-900 meds total out of pocket without insurance .

Dr. Lucidi did the transfer. Multiple embryos.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at VCU Medical Center.
The pharmacy did not give us needles for our injections for menapur. We had no idea this would be the case and found out the night of our first dose. They weren’t concerned that it happened and just had me come in to get them from the clinic the next business day, a Monday. They don’t prepare you very well for the injections so make sure you are comfortable and have your needles !

I was kind of surprised by how insensitive she [Dr. Nancy Durso] could sometimes be, or that she wouldn't realize that certain things would be upsetting. For example, she told me that my ovaries might have cancer cells, which of course really upset me -- but she seemed surprised when I started to cry. I think she would genuinely try to connect with me, but that just isn't her strength. The nurses at VCU are amazing. I learned to rely on them for the emotional support.
The costs for each IUI round [at VCU Medical Center] were around $550 or so. We did the IVF Guarantee program with ICSI, which gives us 6 full cycles for $22,000, and we get a refund if this doesn't result in a baby. We still have to pay $500 for anesthesia for egg retrievals, and we pay for medicine out of pocket. With the VCU pharmacy, meds are around $700... The clinic has a very calm atmosphere. I hear from friends who have done IVF in bigger cities and have described how stressful sitting in the waiting room is. That is definitely not the case at VCU.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
I started seeing Dr. Durso after my husband and I weren't having any luck. We didn't know what was wrong, and Dr. Durso was able to figure out that I actually have pretty bad endometriosis. She did a laproscopic surgery, and I thought she did a really good job with that. After doing some research, I learned that the biggest concern with that procedure is the risk that the surgeon could damage your ovaries, or cause some other complication that will affect your fertility. I found that Dr. Durso did a great job, and I really appreciate that. The surgery didn't have any complications, and gave her more info about what was going on with my body. She adjusted my plan after that, and advised that we would almost certainly need to pursue IVF. We did a number of rounds of IUIs. Dr. Durso performed 3 of those, and based on scheduling issues (holidays, weekends), another doctor and a NP at VCU performed the others. We did one cycle of IVF with Dr. Durso. We were able to retrieve a decent number of eggs, but only half of them were mature. Half of those fertilized, and all of the fertilized eggs stopped dividing. This wasn't great, and apparently my eggs might have some problems. I don't think Dr. Durso did a good job talking to us about this. We had already been planning to try more IVF cycles, but she didn't want to change any of the plan. My sense was that she didn't believe that she could get us pregnant. That was the reason we decided to change up and work with someone new.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Write down questions and ask questions. Dr. Durso isn't great about telling you information. But, if you ask her questions, she'll answer them fully. It's more like she just doesn't think about bringing things up on her own. Ask questions about what is going on with you, what she recommends and why, and whether there are other plans that you could try. Make sure that you know the practical things. Also -- make sure that if you're going to do IVF, that she actually puts you on the schedule!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Durso is kind of awkward. That didn't bother me too much -- I don't need a doctor that I want to hang out with, just a doctor that can get me pregnant. Given that she's been treating fertility problems for so long, though, I was kind of surprised by how insensitive she could sometimes be, or that she wouldn't realize that certain things would be upsetting. For example, she told me that my ovaries might have cancer cells, which of course really upset me -- but she seemed surprised when I started to cry. I think she would genuinely try to connect with me, but that just isn't her strength. The nurses at VCU are amazing. I learned to rely on them for the emotional support.
Describe the protocols Nancy Durso used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
For IUI, we did a few rounds using Femara. Those weren't successful. For the IVF cycle, we did Menopur / Gonal-F, then Ganirilex and HCG trigger shot. This cycle was ok. We got a good number of eggs, although only half of them were mature. Just a note -- I don't have any hormone issues, so I think the above protocol is her "standard".
Describe your experience with your nurse at VCU Medical Center. (Assigned nurse: Christine, Courtney, Kim)
The staff at VCU is simply amazing. They have made this whole infertility ordeal so much better. When I talk to other women with fertility issues, I always urge them to go to one of the VCU doctors simply because the nursing staff will make the whole thing so much better.
Describe your experience with VCU Medical Center.
I've been very happy with VCU. Everyone there, from Amouri and Shawna at reception, to Tanya with the financial stuff, to the nurses, has been great. The clinic has a very calm atmosphere. I hear from friends who have done IVF in bigger cities and have described how stressful sitting in the waiting room is. That is definitely not the case at VCU. Being in a smaller clinic is great. The staff also gets along so well with each other (they seem like a family), and I think that probably creates the great atmosphere. One thing to be aware of is that VCU does IVF cycles once a month. So all of the patients start the cycle on the same day. That means that you sometimes need to get "on the list" in advance, and that you may have to wait a month or two before you can start. That has been frustrating.

[Dr. Nancy Durso is] given zero autonomy. If you don’t fit into their data mold, they don’t know what to do with you...She is the only doctor at the Fredericksburg location and the level of care shows that. Her nurses make up for it, but you won’t feel like a priority with her...Know what you want from a treatment cycle and be prepared to push for what you want. Ultimately she only decides the course of treatment and you’ll rarely if ever see her after that...Lowest dosage of all medications and we quickly had to shift to a higher dose over a weekend which led to a poor retrieval count.
Lowest dosage of all medications and we quickly had to shift to a higher dose over a weekend which led to a poor retrieval count [at Shady Grove Fertility]...Andrea [nurse] was fantastic and 100% the only reason we kept seeing Dr. Durso for so long. She is quick to respond, organized, and knows exactly what to say during stressful cycles...From what I understand, there is no option. They only allow eset [single transfer]...is a revolving door powered by data. You are a number. Because I am data driven this seemed fine at first, but when anything throws off their calculations they have no power to pivot or try anything that hasn’t had years of research behind it.

I felt like physician [Dr. Nancy Durso] was not qualified to be a fertility physician. Scattered, casual, not serious, did not seem concerned with my feelings about the procedure, did not feel like I was treated like a person, did not feel like I was fully informed, somewhat patronizing, seemed to have a "superiority" complex, seemed unconcerned with my outcome...Impersonal, chaotic, long wait times, no response to my concerns, complaints
My final round was prepaid then lab [at Partners for Fertility and IVF] destroyed eggs thru negligence and final transfer was canceled with no refund to me for their error...It was not crowded- now I know why. Front desk staff were the best part of the experience. Lab staff was either grossly negligent or just negligent in handling eggs and embryos. Did not feel they were competent at all.

She [Dr. Nancy Durso] was fine. Just no personality, warmth or bedside manner. I liked the small clinic and specifically avoided the region's gigantic fertility machine...She doesn't talk or explain more than the minimum necessary. Be your own advocate!...At time they were a very small operation. One office woman and one medical assistant. Both those other two wow were fantastic! Kept me there rather than give a larger operation a try

Dr. Durso is very pleasant and is always optimistic that we will get pregnant....Dr. Durso is straight forward and very good at breaking down what we need to look for and expect next. She also is open to any suggestions that we may request. Communicating with her is relatively easy and we always get to a solution...Make sure you take note of all symptoms you have monthly and be sure to know your family history. Also, don’t expect immediate results.
The clinic [VCU - Ctr for Adv Repro Med] is very clean, friendly, and not overly booked. The only complaint I’ve had with them is getting someone to return my phone call quickly and one of the receptionist can be rude and disinterested. I now prefer to use the email option...The nursing staff is great! They always respond to my emails, are super compassionate and communicate between my doctor and I very well!

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
...we needed to do IVF and chose PGS [pre-implantation genetic screening] testing... She pushed us into testing on d3 [day 3] and transferring on d5 [day 5] and never disclosed that she did not have the equipment to test the embryos on d5.
Dr. [Durso] failed to disclose that she didn't have the ability to biopsy d5 embryos for PGS testing because she doesn't have the appropriate equipment... Only use her for IUI, not IVF.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at Partners for Fertility and IVF (closed)?
Dr Durso was very good when we were undergoing IUIs, and we did have a child. When we were ready for a second child, we needed to do IVF and chose PGS testing to get our best possible chance for a successful pregnancy. She pushed us into testing on d3 and transferring on d5 and never disclosed that she did not have the equipment to test the embryos on d5. I would not recommend her for IVF treatment based on this experience.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at Partners for Fertility and IVF (closed)?
Only use her for IUI, not IVF.

It was a standard IVF protocol [with Dr.Nancy Durso]...Start with low doses and slowly work up in dose. She didn’t cater to me and my body which resulted in a lot of my eggs being fried or too mature and so many little ones. We had 53 follicles, 34 eggs and only 26 mature...She forced us almost into not transferring more than one when we were set on transferring two based on past experience...She cared during my miscarriage but the rest of the treatment I barely saw her or she was quick and cold and wasn’t open to hearing us out or our ideas or suggestions the answer was always “this is how we do it here”
Strength [at Shady Grove Fertility-Fredericksburg] is their process Consult to transfer. Very organized. Weakness is not having patients feel like numbers and not transferring morulas in order to not lower statistics. Another strength is they hire people who truly care...Nursing staff is amazing. My main nurse was office lead so she was busy and getting ahold of her was sort of hard at times...They don’t cater protocols to specific patients very well. You have to be your own advocate
