Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr Khan is a straight shooter and that’s what I wanted. For me, being human is being realistic and well informed. Dr Khan is both. I don’t need to be best friends with my RE - I want a baby and to move on with my life. ... Dr Khan is on top of the latest science and was very hands on as we selected our egg donor. I felt I could ask about my protocol and he would get back to me with his rationale in making certain decisions. I felt the coordination level between SGF offices was high. I never had any issues or confusion. Dr Khan is detail oriented and will be realistic about your prognosis.
I had zero issues - everything had been straight forward so far. From the finance team to my primary clinic to the clinic I went to for transfer — no issues. I was able to speak the embryologist on transfer day and see a photo of our embryo which I appreciated. ... I felt the coordination level between SGF offices was high. ... [nurses] Completely on the ball in every aspect. Always returned munch calls, helpful and educated.

Describe the protocols Naveed Khan used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility VMA and their degree of success.
I am doing the shared risk egg donor program — we did 1:2 and anonymously shared the egg haul with another receipt(s). We got 12 mature eggs, 10 of which became blasts, 6 of which tested PGS normal. This is an incredible result so far. We got one blast in two retrievals with my own eggs. I am currently pregnant from our first transfer - although it is early.

We paid around $50k for all inclusive 1:2 shared risk program and PGS testing. Baby or money back.

Non-issue. I only wanted to transfer one at a time so it wasn’t something discussed at length.

Before my IUI, My primary doctor found that my thyroid was WAY off (hypothyroid) and Dr Khan , knowing this, still followed through with the IUI that I paid for out of pocket. *I* then had to ask him after I learned that it failed, if my thyroid could have caused the IUI to fail, he said I was correct my thyroid wasn’t optimal for fertility and to go and seek an Endocrinologist...he was quick to wave off newer studies I’ve found. I let him because he’s the doctor, not me. My test came back with high FSH and possible clotting disorder. Otherwise “unexplained infertility”. I asked if I should take baby aspirin, “it’s not part of our protocol” I pushed back “will it hurt if I take baby aspirin.
Everyone [at Shady Grove Fertility] responds to emails very quickly. Everyone is very kind and welcoming. I never had any issue with communication or treatment from nurses. Phone calls aren’t the best, they prefer email...My IUI was not covered my insurance, $1,800 for IUI...This clinic is run very smoothly and timely. The clinic is very clean and accommodating for my family. (I have a 3 year old son who had to be snuck in a few times). The staff is friendly. They have weekend hours at different locations that isn’t too far away from where we live. I just don’t appreciate how I was treated as a number by the doctor.
How was your experience with Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA?
I am all around disappointed. Honestly, from the start I was a little put off by feeling like a number. It’s the closest clinic to my house, so, I stayed when I shouldn’t have. Dr, Khan did take the time to hear me out most of the time when we had a meeting. But, he was quick to wave off newer studies I’ve found. I let him because he’s the doctor, not me. My test came back with high FSH and possible clotting disorder. Otherwise “unexplained infertility”. I asked if I should take baby aspirin, “it’s not part of our protocol” I pushed back “will it hurt if I take baby aspirin. Since it could help prevent another miscarriage?” “no it won’t hurt anything”. Alrighty fighting for clarity and treatment as an individual and it was only the beginning. One medicated timed intercourse failed. Then I set up for an IUI, our insurance doesn’t cover it, in Northern VA fertility treatment is very pricey. I then went to my primary doctor who ran regular tests and found my thyroid was off (hypothyroid). A few days before IUI I told my clinic about my thyroid levels they “‘made note of it”. Went ahead with the IUI. It failed. I then discovered that my levels were way off for fertility and could be a reason for infertility and early miscarriage. When I brought this up to doctor Khan he said “yes. Your thyroid is not optimal for fertility. If you’d like, go and see an Endocrinologist”. That was the last contact I had with this clinic. I won’t be returning. They took my money and instead of holding off on the IUI that was perhaps destined for failure from the start and waited for my thyroid levels to regulate, they did the IUI. And I had to figure out for myself that my thyroid being off needed to be taken seriously. So frustrating and disheartening. You must be your own advocate. Ask questions. Do your own research!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA?
Do your own research. Be your own advocate. Ask all of the questions. Be persistent. Also, don’t be afraid to go somewhere for a second opinion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA?
Being diagnosed unexplained and then forced to follow their “protocol” for Medicated timed intercourse. First, they found my tests showed clotting disorder and told me taking baby aspirin wasn’t part of their protocol. Before my IUI, My primary doctor found that my thyroid was WAY off (hypothyroid) and Dr Khan , knowing this, still followed through with the IUI that I paid for out of pocket. *I* then had to ask him after I learned that it failed, if my thyroid could have caused the IUI to fail, he said I was correct my thyroid wasn’t optimal for fertility and to go and seek an Endocrinologist. That was the last contact I had with this clinic. Very disappointing and frustrating. I felt they just took my money without any thought as to what could actually be going on with ME, the patient.
Describe the protocols Naveed Khan used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility VMA and their degree of success.
From my understanding for timed intercourse and IUI - its all the same. I did not do any IVF rounds or egg retrieval’s. For T.I and IUI - take clomid or letrozole starting day 3 of your cycle. Then around day 12 you go into the office for blood work and ultrasound to count follicles to see if you’re ready to take the trigger shot (ovadril). Trigger shot and two days later go in for the IUI. Then follow up with progesterone suppositories until negative blood test. Continue them if positive. My lining was thin during my T.I. and I had to take estrogen suppositories until negative pregnancy test.

My insurance covered the medication for timed intercourse. That price was under 70$ for the clomid, ovadril, and progesterone. My IUI was not covered my insurance, $1,800 for IUI then $175 for medications.

He [Dr. Naveed Khan] was pleasant but sterile. I felt as though he was succinct and not as compassionate as I would have liked, but he seemed knowledgeable. When we were talking about IVF he wanted to put me on a very high dose protocol, 600 of follistim to start, and 3 weeks of birth control prior. When I asked about lower doses I was told “let’s see how this goes and then we’ll adjust.” When you’re out of pocket, a full course with 600iu follistim is prohibitively expensive, so I would have liked it if he worked with me on dosing.
Shady Grove is a big clinic and they therefore have a set assembly line type of feel. Everyone was perfectly pleasant but I definitely knew I was “one of the herd.” Also when I left I was preparing for an IVF cycle. My financial counselor changed and no one told me until I emailed my counselor and she said so and so is now the Leesburg counselor...Tracey was really upbeat & seemed competent. Kelly who I had to interact with from time to time was harder to get a response from. I felt like I had to call and email to get responses at times from anyone, except Taylor who was very responsive but again unfortunately was only my nurse for a short time.

At first I had Taylor, who I liked a lot, and then it switched to Tracey but I didn’t get to meet her so I met Kelley instead which was thoroughly confusing. Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility VMA.
This is a satellite clinic so they do not do anything on the weekends, or any egg retrievals or transfers. I did monitoring here and due to one IUI being on the weekend and the other with Dr Khan out of town I ended up having to drive to Rockville twice. What I loved: no kids allowed. I did have to wait sometimes for monitoring. Monitoring was like one after another bc there are so many patients. The phlebotomist was very sweet.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA.
Shady Grove really is prohibitively expensive for out of pocket patients. IUI was $1800 global fee. Timed intercourse cycles were the SAME price bc “they don’t recommend doing it without monitoring,” ie my obgyn wouldn’t prescribe clomid or femara without monitoring but neither would my RE. IVF was $10,500 for a fresh cycle. Frozen transfers are $4500 a piece or something, pgs is $3500 or $3600, not sure about ICSI.
Describe Naveed Khan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility VMA.
He preferred one but said it was up to me and that if they recommended 2 it meant things weren’t looking very good.

Describe the protocols Naveed Khan used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility VMA and their degree of success.
After initial testing I was diagnosed with PCOS with an-ovulation and my husband was diagnosed with mild male factor (poor morphology). We did 3 IUI procedures with Femara, taken CD 3-7, and an ovidrel trigger when the lead follicle reached 18mm+. First and second cycles were 2.5mg, and I had one follicle each time. I triggered on CD16 for the first cycle, and CD18 for the second cycle. The third IUI cycle we went with the same protocol since I had responded well in the past, however this time when I went in for a CD12 and CD15 follicle scan and we saw no growth, and no lead follicle. Dr. Khan decided to do a "re-dose" and upped the dose of Femara to 5mg this time. I started the re-dose on CD16 and completed on CD21. I had follicle scans on CD26, 28, and 30 and we triggered on CD31, still only one large follicle. Each IUI cycle resulted in a negative beta. Dr. Khan offered to have us do another IUI, he said the clinic would do up to 6 if we wanted, but we elected to move on to IVF to increase odds of success. My IVF protocol was high responder agonist. I started with 3 weeks of birth control pills, and then I was on 112.5 Follistim and 75 of Menopur for 8 days. I started Ganreliex on the 8th day of stims and days 9-11 we took the follistim down to only 75 because I had a ton of measurable follicles and added in PIO. I stimmed overall for 11 days and used a lupron trigger shot, with retrieval on day 13. I was unable to have any HCG (which they usually administer during the retrieval) because of risk of OHSS. I had 59 eggs retrieved. The retrieval went very smoothly, but I was miserable afterwards. I was given pain meds but even with those the car ride home was absolutely horrible - every small bump in the road was excruciating. I took the day of the retrieval and the next day off of work, and was able to resume normal life 2 days post retrieval. I wanted to do a fresh transfer, but Dr. Khan warned me that this might not be possible due to risk of OHSS. We planned to move forward with the fresh transfer anyway, and I drank more then my share of Gatoraide in the next few days. Since I was feeling back to normal by the time the day for the fresh transfer came around, Dr. Khan advised me that it was up to me to listen to my body and told me to go through with the fresh transfer if I felt up to it. I did, so we did. During the transfer there was only a very small amount of fluid visible on the ultrasound, so I felt much better. Unfortunately we ended up getting another negative beta, and I am cycling for my first FET now. We had 16 embryos fertilized normally, 1 was transferred fresh, and an additional 4 were cryopreserved. We did not do PGS testing because we are not high risk candidates as far as that is concerned, but plan to pursue it if we transfer our 4 frozen and do not have success and want to do another retrieval.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility VMA. (Assigned nurse: Christine Johnson)
My primary nurse was Christine. Overall, she is great! She is always available for questions, gets back to me super fast when I leave her a voicemail, and is super compassionate when it comes to breaking me the bad news. I have also interacted with Kelly and Tracy, they are amazing nurses as well. Taylor usually takes care of ordering the meds and she is super responsive and helpful as well. I had a lot of issues with my insurance wanting to change my medications or being out of specific things, and she was always able to make accommodations that allowed me to complete treatment in a timely manner.

I am lucky enough to have great insurance. I paid approx $100 per ultrasound appointment during IUI treatment, and up to my out of pocket maximum once I started IVF ($1400). Medications were about $110 per IUI cycle, and approx $500 per IVF cycle.

It would have been nice after our first failed IUI to have him [Dr. Khan] explain why we were trying the same exact protocol as before, but it's understandable to have a nurse call us and talk to us as well.
Chris [nurse at Shady Grove] was always willing to take a call, very responsive to voicemails. Doctors, nurses and the rest of the office staff are thoughtful in their explanations of our care, the appropriate next steps and what to expect...I was surprised that the results of my genetic testing was not communicated with him prior to my follow-up consult.
How was your experience with Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA?
I am fortunate enough to be fairly healthy, and should not have problems conceiving, so most of our protocol has to deal with my husband's issues. Dr. Khan explained what the process would be at the beginning if I had no issues, and after all of our testing explained again what to expect. I was surprised that the results of my genetic testing was not communicated with him prior to my follow-up consult, and he had never heard of the syndrome that I am a carrier of, but had he been given the information prior, I think it would have eased my comfort level, because he would have been able to speak knowledgeably to my concerns. It would have been nice after our first failed IUI to have him explain why we were trying the same exact protocol as before, but it's understandable to have a nurse call us and talk to us as well.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA?
Be upfront about an issues you are, or believe you are facing. Dr. Khan certainly isn't a mind reader, but answered every question that we asked.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility VMA?
Every time we come into the office, everyone is exceedingly nice. They all know this is a difficult time for someone desperately trying to conceive. Doctors, nurses and the rest of the office staff are thoughtful in their explanations of our care, the appropriate next steps and what to expect.

Chris was my care coordinator, and has since left her position and moved to another position in the group. Chris was always willing to take a call, very responsive to voicemails, and creatively left me a voicemail at work, that I would understand, but if someone else happened to hear, they wouldn't have known what she was talking about! I felt at ease with Chris and that she had my best interests at heart.

After my diagnostic test, it was revealed that I had a few things Medically to take care of. Yes, this pushed back my journey to motherhood but [Dr. Khan] explained everything that I had to do and why...Due to my 2 myomectomies and previous miscarriage multiple embryo transfers were too risky...Once I got myself together medically, Dr Khan explained my treatment plan. Even after a set back during COVID, he made sure to teleconference to discuss pans going forward.
They [SGF nurses] were very informative, quick to respond and extremely compassionate...From all of the testing and options available. The process Is pretty overwhelming from the testing to the financial responsibilities. They are realistic with your treatment plan and adjust throughout. I am currently still undergoing treatment with Dr. Khan, however our encounters with him thus far have been great. He is to the point and ready to work towards a solution. I have had no issues with his bedside manner. We look forward to completing our treatment process and believing in his plan of action!... He may come across as a bit cold but he is just very straightforward.
I have no real complaints with the clinic [Shady Grove-Leesburg] itself. Most everyone I have encountered there has been great. The nursing team, techs, and coordinators have all been kind and helpful. Some of them are such bright spots in a not so great situation!... Everyone has been kind and friendly! Very responsive to messages most of the time!

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
The doctor [Dr. Naveed Khan] is a good communicator. I felf at ease talking to him. He explained the procedure, set a realistic expactation of the outcome without giving me a false hope. He had all the right answers when I asked my questions. He made the jurney almost effortless and easy...I had IUi procedure for first time. I was prescribed letrazol, Gonal-F 450 ml, Ovidrel 250 MCG/0.5 ml, Progesterone 200 mg...
The cost for IUI was $1800 + $508 for medications [at Shady Grove Fertility]... The office is established and well know...the visits were very convinient. The weekness: for a specific radiology test I needed to travel all the way to the main SGC clinic. I could have done the test in any local radiology office that was much more convinient for me...The staff was always smiling and accomodating. I had to call over the weekend when the office was closed and I had a nurse assisting me with the right instructions.

As scary as the experience is I always felt calmed by the experience and confidence and the knowledge of Dr. Kahn and his staff. Every question was answered. He spent time with us and even after explaining thing to us he would make sure no other questions came to mind. He would wait around to make sure. We always knew the steps that were happening and what to expect next...We had to do a frozen transfer as I got to “ripe” to do a live transfer. This was not originally part of our plan but it was explained beforehand and we knew the possibility so we were not thrown off when we realized we would have to go that route.
They [the nurses art Shady Grove Fertility] were so loving and caring and they knew how to carry conversations that didn’t put you on edge or put too much pressure on the situation. They were inspirational...I loved this group and all of my options. I loved the communication and the caring environment. I almost didn’t want to stop seeing them they were like family for a while going through it with us. Cheering us on and making it such a smooth process and we left every worry to them.
