How was your experience with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
We are all looking for one thing when we read these reviews. #1, Results!
It is with the highest respect and gratitude I can assure you, Dr. Pak Chung will give you those results. While we all have varying circumstances to work with, Dr. Chung will consider your uniqueness and do the highest caliber of work his job will allow him, with the most kind, non judgmental, and empathetic approach.
We are 5 months pregnant as I write this with a healthy baby.
Our story:
Dr. Chung was recommended to me by a friend that had results 2x both with timed intercourse. She also recommended him to another mutual friend and she too, has a healthy singleton from IVF.
My situation was a little different from my friends because we had some genetic problems and we had limited insurance options for treatments. Dr. Chung kept all this in mind and recommended the most streamlined plan. It took about a year and a half as we tried the easier methods first instead of his recommendation, and sadly they failed. When we decided to take his advise, and go all in with IVF, it worked!
Here are some details about our experience with Dr. Chung that made him stand out above the other doctors.
He was well liked by all the staff. One of my nurses even remarked to me that he was her favorite. I asked why and she said because of the way he speaks to people. He was very nice.
I.E. Excellent bedside manor.
I noticed on several occasions Dr. Chung had this uncanny ability to anticipate my questions before I even spoke them. When things were going well for me, he treated me with dignity and compassion.
His personal secretaries were hired by him and they were the absolute best to deal with! They always called me back or emailed me in the same day if they could.
He is incredibly dedicated to his profession. He may seem rushed sometimes but that is because he sees as many patients as he can and tries his best to be there for all of them. I believe he spends extra hours in the lab and hospital.
If you would feel more comfortable having him do your transfer, he will do that for you if he can. You just have to ask! :D
Speaking of the transfer, don't be afraid. (and the retrieval = no fear)
Everyone was so good at their job! I was also able to meet the embryologist before the transfer. Although Jason, the embryologist, had his mask up, looking into his eyes, gave me such hope. I could tell he knew I had a good chance and he believed in the successful outcome.
I can not express my eternal gratitude for the way I was treated and considered under Dr. Chung's care. I will forever be misty eyed in thinking of him. He was success story and angel. Thank you Dr. Chung.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Be honest and straight to the point. Be paitient. He sees many people trying to conceive not just you. He will do the best he can for you, don't worry. The billing dept and desk staff are not a reflection of him being a doctor. As my husband would say, "We stick with Chung!" :D
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Dr. Chung treated more than ahuman, he treated me like he would treat his sister as he stated.
He kept in mind our financial situation and our unique health situation at all times to better advise us.
When we did not take his first recommendation on which fertility method to use, he was not at all judgmental or egotistical. In fact he persued the paths with us in compassion and vigor.
When we finally were able to do IVF (out of pocket) he made sure to offer to do our transfer and kept us well informed through his nurses and secretaries. Their respect and knowledge was a reflection of Dr. Chungs.
He is a good person and it shows in all he does.
Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
I don't remember the exact terminology used in my protocols. I am sorry. I do know that despite my reminders about my severe needle phobias, he would not deviate from using progesterone as an injection rather than a suppository at the end of IVF treatments. He did say it was because the injections had better results.
I didn't experience any side effects at all through out his treatments.
The nurses were very helpful at keeping me on track with what to take when. They also recommended a cheaper pharmacy for me to pick up my meds.
I can tell you Dr. Chung is not a fan of herbal remedies but he highly recommends accupuncture, as do I. My favorite accupuncturist is Kanako Oshiumi, located through Tiger Lily Holistic and out of her apt. on W57th St. Receiving accupuncture during my IVF was a huge help in easing my anxiety and balancing my systems to let the IVF medications work better. Kanako also told me she saw me pregnant with a boy, and guess what? She was right.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Weill Cornell Medical College. (Assigned nurse: Alexia )
The nursing staff from the head nurse I was assigned to the nurses that did my blood work were all excellent. I did not have a single bad experience. My primary nurse was Alexia but I also worked with a Sarah and some others. They always called with instructions as needed. They recommended a cheaper pharmacy to help me get my meds. They called every pharmacy I asked for in different situations with different prescriptions.
The one time I had a bad experience it was with the "Pre auth team" They submitted to the wrong department to my insurance and as a result I almost missed starting my IVF cycle as it was around the New Years Holiday. That had nothing to do with my nurses. But my point of contact on that was my nursing team and I was furious. I was upset for the nursing team too because it was not their fault yet they had to hear my complaints. If there was one thing to be improved, I would request that the "Pre-auth team" provides the patient with a name of contact in that specific dept., a direct phone number, and direct email address.
Other than this one snafu, the nursing team was always on the ball.
Describe your experience with Weill Cornell Medical College.
The Weill Cornell Center for Reproductive Medicine was overall excellent. The have access to state of the art facilities and the newest equipment. It may be a lot of money to pay out of pocket for people in my economic bracket but going somewhere cheaper might not have the best and newest equipment or techniques and that should be considered.
I did a lot of research before deciding to do my IVF here. Locally in NY and abroad. If we would not have received help from our employer at the last minute I would have chosen Greece. (You can research this)
I am very grateful we were able to stay with Dr. Chung for IVF. He helped us the first time! Thankfully so because I don't think we could have afforded a 2nd IVF out of pocket.
The staff from the nurses, the doctors (you see many during your "monitoring"), the embryologist, Jason, and the lab and behind the scenes people like the anesthesiologist, were all top notch in my opinion. Great bedside manor and professional.
My only complaints were with the billing dept. and the front desk office politics that I occasionally had to deal with. That is the responsibility of Weill Cornell to fix. Not your doctor. Nor should these trival interactions detract you from seeing the best doctor possible.
Keep your heart where it should be set, on your family!
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I never waited too long. The doctors were all great!

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College.
As I said before the main problems were with the "Pre Auth Team", Billing, and front desk.
Pre-Auth failed to submit to correct dept for my insurance company and insurance pharmacy which could have delayed my cycle start date had I not urgently followed up with my nursing team via phone and emails. This is not my nurses fault. I would have appreciated a direct name, number and email of pre-auth to handle THEIR mistake. Also the person from pre-auth that I finally spoke to (eastern European accent? Russian? Not sure?) she was rude and didn't take responsibility for the mistake. This was very close to the New Year holiday when shipping meds becomes more difficult and the WC offices close early for holiday so as you can bet I was uneccessarily stressed out during a time of year that is already stressful about to begin a thing that I have never done before with a needle phobia, and the pressure of using money that wasn't mine. Any mistakes were not taken lightly at this specific point in my treatment.
Furthermore, the billing dept. was annoying to deal with to say the least. My friend actually left WC because the billing dept would not resubmit a denied claim to her insurance company. She is a doctor and has to submit and resubmit all the time to get things done. While this specific example didn't happen to me, I don't doubt for a second the billing dept.'s shortcomings.
As far as the front desk is concerned. They could be more empathetic. Also I don't want to hear them talking about their lives so loudly. They know where they can get away with making clients wait and unless you kiss their butt, if they don't like you that day, they will make you wait with a fake smile. That was about 2 out of 5 people I dealt with.
Luckily, I was able to rise above these petty things but they certainly did not make my experience better.
Dr. Chung is competent and confident, but very, very conservative. Despite being a DOR patient, I was repeatedly suppressed with hormonal birth control, which led to very poor response. Estrogen priming, a standard protocol for those with DOR, was never even mentioned (I had to switch clinics to even find out it existed). Last we heard from him, he was pushing us toward donor eggs...
Surly receptionists. Unavailable nurses — and forget ever contacting the doctor. Long, long wait times, even when we arrived at like 6 AM on a weekday. No one [at Weill Cornell Medical College] ever bothers to learn your name or even glance at your chart before seeing you, so you get traumatized by mangled versions of your diagnoses. After retrieval, nurses loudly announce how many eggs they got out of your body as you're still woozy from anesthetic, so a DOR patient like me got to hear that the woman next to her had 20 eggs retrieved.

Don't go to him if you have DOR.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Dr. Chung was very nice at first, but how he treated us in visits was inversely proportional to our ability to pay. While we still had savings, he treated us courteously (though was often rushed or late — an hour late on average for each appointment). However, after our savings ran out and it became clear we were in dire financial straits, he stopped responding to calls and ultimately ghosted us after a failed transfer.
Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
We did the most standard protocol with the highest doses of all medications (Gonal-F and Menopur), over and over again. Once we did a "low-and-slow" Lupron protocol, with poor results. Triggered with HCG each time. Had between a month to two months of hormonal suppression each time because of high day-3 FSH, which led to very poor response. The one time we got decent results was when we got lucky enough to have a low FSH and therefore a natural start, but Dr. Chung seemed very impatient and pushed us not to wait for these possible natural starts but instead to suppress, suppress, suppress. Because he spent much time talking about how Weill Cornell is "the best," we didn't question his decision-making and spent $50k of our own money on treatment. We ended up with 1 PGS/PGD-normal embryo from 5 IVF attempts (one canceled for poor response), and after we transferred it and the transfer failed, Dr. Chung never called us again. We tried to get in touch with him and he never called us back. At that point, we switched clinics.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Weill Cornell Medical College.
With the exception of one nurse (whom I will not name here), the nurses ranged from indifferent to utterly incompetent. The most generous way of seeing things, I think, is that they have far too many patients for the number of nurses WC chooses to have on staff, and the result is that basically nothing works. You can never get in touch with the doctor (can leave messages with his assistants but he never once called us back in two years of treatment); but also, it's impossible to get in touch with the nurses. They issue instructions that are unclear; they don't communicate by email, so if you miss their call (for instance, because you're at work), you're SOL. They do things like forget to renew pre-authorizations for drugs or not communicate with the pharmacy, so nine times out of ten we started our cycle with a stressful phone relay to get our drugs to us. When we were first getting diagnosed — a traumatic time due to the severity of my conditions — their intermittent and unclear communication greatly heightened the horror of what we were finding out. The lack of consistency from one time to the next, the long wait times, the inability to ever speak to a specific person more than once, except by chance, all compounded the impression of a cold and disorganized practice. If you are vulnerable or have a difficult diagnosis, if you're not rich enough to command the doctor's attention, or if you need repeated attempts and lots of patience to get a success, steer clear of this place!
Describe your experience with Weill Cornell Medical College.
Surly receptionists. Unavailable nurses — and forget ever contacting the doctor. Long, long wait times, even when we arrived at like 6 AM on a weekday. No one ever bothers to learn your name or even glance at your chart before seeing you, so you get traumatized by mangled versions of your diagnoses. After retrieval, nurses loudly announce how many eggs they got out of your body as you're still woozy from anesthetic, so a DOR patient like me got to hear that the woman next to her had 20 eggs retrieved. Horrible billing department that sent our bills to collections over and over again — even after we had written notification from WC that we were on a payment plan; even after we told them we were out of town for the holidays and couldn't check our mail (returned to 15 collections notices that time!); even after we wrote to the Dean of the Medical College in a last-ditch attempt to get the harassment to stop. After exhausting our entire savings and our $10k of insurance coverage for IVF, we applied for a hardship program WC offers and received the rudest, most ignorant, least compassionate treatment yet from robotic administrators who demanded to see our entire tax record without ever specifying who would be looking at it or how decisions about what constitutes "hardship" are made. Then, we were offered a "payment plan" that took none of our actual financial data into account and would not have been feasible if we wanted to eat or pay rent. We switched clinics mainly because Dr. Chung ghosted us after our transfer failed, but the horrors we experienced at the hands of billing also deserve mention.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Absolutely ruined our schedule. Long waits no matter how early we showed up. Super rude and surly receptionists who acted like we were garbage.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I described this in detail in a different section, but all I can say is, this was perhaps the most horrifying aspect of our care — and I am someone with severe and uncommon fertility problems manifesting on multiple fronts. There is no excuse for how Weill Cornell treats patients in this respect. To add to what I wrote above, we once asked someone over the phone how we make the letters from collections agencies stop, and they said "just disregard them" and then actually laughed at us.
Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Dr. Chung did not seem to have a clear policy on eSET vs. multiple transfer (at least not when it came to our case).
What specific things went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Lost paperwork
Failed to call with results
Failed to send your chart to another clinic
Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
Provided conflicting information
Failed to convey critical information
Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College.
-We had 2 transfers at the clinic, both failed. After the first pregnancy test, no one bothered to call us with results, so we had to call ourselves. A random doctor called to tell us it was negative. After the second transfer, which had been built up by doctors at the Tribeca and UES clinics as a "sure thing" — we'd been discussing in minute detail how to coordinate early prenatal visits, etc. — we got a phone message that the beta was negative and then nothing at all. No call from any nurse, nothing from our doctor (even after we called his assistant). Just empty space in response to our grief.
-Our pre-authorization for certain drugs lapsed without anyone telling us so; we found out only when we went to order more drugs for an upcoming cycle, at which point it became a huge headache to get things ordered and delivered in time
-Prescribing things in wrong amounts, at the wrong time, forgetting to call in prescriptions altogether; basically, unless we called them over and over and over again, and left angry messages, nothing ever got done
-Repeatedly sending bills to collections even after notifying us in writing that we could pay in pieces; we received countless letters and several harassing phone calls as a result
-Demanding to see our tax information only to propose a "payment plan" we couldn't afford
We were living abroad when we went through the treatment with Dr. Chung. He makes an effort to go over the procedure and results with us either over the phone or in person when we were in NY. However, he does seem to be in a rush all the time...We did 3 retrievals with him, each time it failed to yield a PGTA normal embryo...we asked him multiple times to consider doing something different to improve the results but he refused.
[Weill Cornell has] a lot of patients cycle through so it's not as personal as a private clinic. Don't expect to see your doctor on every monitoring appointment. He / she may not do your retrieval or transfer. each doctor only does retrieval one day a week...The nurse had a hard time figure out how to coordinate with us because we were living overseas and did the first few days of monitoring outside of country. I would like to note the genetic counsel who communicated the final results to us was horrible. she had zero compassion and knowledge.
How was your experience with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Dr. Pak Chung takes very straight and narrow approach to IVF , a process that has a lot variability. We did 3 retrievals with him, each time it failed to yield a PGTA normal embryo from a total of 14 highly rated day 5 embryos. Throughout the process, we asked him multiple times to consider doing something different to improve the results but he refused. We are now under the care of CCRM, the doctor there was very surprised by Dr. Chung's approach to stick with the same protocol after seeing the same results in 3 rounds. I think Dr. Chung's approach may work with 75% of the patients but if you have a tough/ unique case and requires the doctor to think out of box, you should not go to Dr. Chung. He sticks with the same general protocol. Being a part of an academic organization, the doctors there are super conservative. They would not go out of their way to help the patient.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
If you have a tough case and his protocol didn't work for the first time, I would think very hard about staying with him. Get a second opinion.
Be prepared with questions when you meet with him. He can be very intimidating sometimes but you need to be your own advocate.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?

Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
I am a good responder to stim so he used the same protocol for all three rounds: 225 gonal F/ 150 Menopur then added grlx use 5000 IU HCG trigger
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Weill Cornell Medical College.
The nurse had a hard time figure out how to coordinate with us because we were living overseas and did the first few days of monitoring outside of country.
I would like to note the genetic counsel who communicated the final results to us was horrible. she had zero compassion and knowledge. her name was Ann Carlson. She didn't know how to explain our results and completely dismissed our results because they were abnormal. She would make these conclusions about the embryos without any data and told us it's based on her gut feeling. I am floored with how unprofessional she was. You should definitely request a different genetic counselor if you go to Cornell. She added so much stress to our process. We deserve better.
Describe your experience with Weill Cornell Medical College.
Go to Cornell for their lab - we got much better fertilization rate; They have a lot of patients cycle through so it's not as personal as a private clinic. Please see my note about the genetic counselor above. My recommendation is request a different one if you get assigned to Ann Carlson.
I could not have asked for a better physician than Doctor Chung. His genuine goal was to help me succeed, and I sincerely felt that he cared about the outcome more than your average Doctor would. I spent a span of six years (2013-2019) under his care, freezing and retrieving eggs and transferring embryos, and could not have been happier with the quality of care and treatment he provided me. There were several occasions where he took the time, outside of office hours, to call and explain things to me or console me when I received a negative pregnancy test.
The clinic itself [Weill Cornell] was great and had a pleasant and clean atmosphere. My only criticism was the morning wait was often extremely long. Several times I waited over an hour for them to call my name for bloodwork and ultrasounds.... The nurses (Cheryl Sabatino, Sarah Fricke, Juliana Shen, etc.) were all very capable, knowledgeable and efficient. They got back to me within a reasonable amount of time and responded to my questions in detail. The nurses who drew blood, in the mornings, were also very professional and caring.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
To a prospective patient of Dr. Pak Chung, I would say "don't be afraid to ask many questions". Dr. Chung is the type of doctor who appreciates questions and has the patience and knowledge to answer them well.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Dr. Chung always treated me and my husband in a very warm, caring and genuine way. Even though I wasn't able to conceive under his care (probably due to circumstances out of his control), I have zero doubt that him and his staff/team tried their absolute best to help us reach our goal of having a baby. Dr. Chung always listened patiently to my long list of questions and never made me feel rushed or silly for asking them. His assistants, Lily, Liliane, Phoebe and Alice were also always available to talk to me and assist me, and extremely helpful at all times.
Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
I would say that Dr. Chung started me with the basic protocol and modified it, when he saw that it wasn't working. With each round that did not succeed we would trouble-shoot to see how we could do things differently in order to increase our chances for success. Dr. Chung even conferred with my gynecologist several times, in order for me to get the optimal results out of a hysteroscopy, performed by my gynecologist.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Weill Cornell Medical College. (Assigned nurse: Cheryl Sabatino, Sarah Fricke, Juliana Shen)
These nurses (who were part of the monitoring staff in the mornings) are some of the only nurses I've met who consistently were able to draw blood on the first try, instead of poking me repeatedly to find a good vein.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
The monitoring appointments were mostly organized, except for the very long waiting process (sometimes 1 1/2 hours). The monitoring hours were a little early, but I understand why they needed to be, so that they can have your blood work results back by that afternoon.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I paid, out-of-pocket, $60,000 or more for costs including, egg retrieval and freezing, embryo creation, frozen embryo transfers, doctors visits, special ultrasounds, etc. The breakdown of the costs was very hard to keep track of, so I had to write diligent notes and create charts to stay organized and be financially prepared for the bills to come.
Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Dr. Chung was always direct in telling me his concerns regarding pregnancy of multiples He gave me all of the statistics, but when push came to shove, he allowed me to put in two, even though he objected to it.
What specific things went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Lost paperwork
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I once gave a girl at the front desk my medical release authorization and she never handed it in. The girls at the front desk are a little too chatty with one another, and not super-focused on tending to the patients in the waiting room. They also slipped up a couple of times when I mentioned my last name, and they said the first name of another patient with the same last name as me, alerting me to the fact that family members were also fertility patients. The proper protocol should be to ask for your DOB and first and last name, instead of jumping to fill in the blanks.
[Dr. Pak Chung] is direct and thorough with enough compassion to deliver the message. He went into the science behind it all which helped us wrap our brains around everything. This happened during every step of the process and in-particular when tough decisions needed to be made...he said that the embryo that they wanted to use was very healthy and strong and there was a 6% delta from the success rate and he would recombine taking our chance with the single because it was so strong
There are a lot of people [at Weill Cornell Medical College]. Some people don't like it. To me it was a reminder that fertility is an issue that is not discussed often enough ... The billing department could also do a better job of explaining information to you and what is needed when. I often felt like I didn't know what was due when...I preferred the nurses once we were doing egg donation to the nurse for egg retrieval. They were all good, but the donation nurses were a bit more straight forward and organized

Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I was high risk due to a bunch of preexisting conditions and age. We had 7-8 embryos. On day 3 when he called early in the morning, he told us the number and that we would wait for a day 5 transfer. He mentioned that we should discuss with each other multiple embryo transfer. On day 5, he said that the embryo that they wanted to use was very healthy and strong and there was a 6% delta from the success rate and he would recombine taking our chance with the single because it was so strong. We were happy with that guidance.
What specific things went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Failed to call with results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Once or twice I have to call for a protocol after bloodwork. it wasn't a big deal.
I always did natural cycles (ie. no progesterone shots) prior to transfer [with Dr. Pak Chung]...was caring and always spoke to my husband and I with enthusiasm and a optimistic flair. While he was always brief and to the point, our interactions didn't feel overly clinical...Weakness: Can be rushed. Appointments never started on time (sometimes had to wait 1.5-2 hrs in waiting room). Did not seem overly involved in my case for some rounds of IVF but granted we had gone through 8 egg retrievals together so near the end, I felt I was in good hands with any doctor at the clinic.
Strengths [for nurses at Weill Cornell]: Organized, responsive, good communicators Weakness: None...It [monitoring] was a cattle call and sometimes chaotic. I feel like there has to be a way to automate this more. Operational strategy wasn't superb... Weakness: Could feel like a factory at times...Billing department is terrible. I've had to dispute every single bill I ever received from this clinic, followed by hours of agonizing calls with my insurance company. After requesting a billing audit from my insurance company, I received a refund in excess of $15K (which indicates the level of incompetence of the billing staff).
How was your experience with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Strengths: Direct, intelligent, not patronizing, showed empathy, competent. He will call you on a weekend or late in the evening to check in on you. I've never had doctors call me outside of business hours before so this was appreciated (meaning did not feel like a 9-5 operation).

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
He doesn't have a lot of time and always seems a bit rushed so have all your questions ready in advance.
Befriend his nurses and his office staff. They are fantastic and will get you the access you need to Dr Chung or answers to questions they themselves can answer. They run a tight ship. It seems like each of the doctors at Weill Cornell have their own support staff so the calibre of that team makes a big difference in your overall experience.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Dr Chung was caring and always spoke to my husband and I with enthusiasm and a optimistic flair. While he was always brief and to the point, our interactions didn't feel overly clinical.
Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
Really cannot remember at this point. However, I always did natural cycles (ie. no progesterone shots) prior to transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Weill Cornell Medical College. (Assigned nurse: Christine Wu)
Strengths: Organized, responsive, good communicators
Weakness: None
Describe your experience with Weill Cornell Medical College.
Strengths: A very well-oiled machine.
Weakness: Could feel like a factory at times. You will definitely see women you know in the waiting rooms but cannot really attribute that to the clinic perse.
Billing department is terrible. I've had to dispute every single bill I ever received from this clinic, followed by hours of agonizing calls with my insurance company. After requesting a billing audit from my insurance company, I received a refund in excess of $15K (which indicates the level of incompetence of the billing staff).
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
It was a cattle call and sometimes chaotic. I feel like there has to be a way to automate this more. Operational strategy wasn't superb.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Honestly cannot remember but each round of IVF was approx. $20-25K (excl genetic testing, incl ICSI, FET, meds)
Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
He felt that multiple embryos was a good strategy for my first transfer as it increased the odds of success. However, after I failed to conceive, I requested that I not "waste" 2 embryos each time and would prefer to only transfer a single. He was completely open to that and subsequent transfers (2x) were successful.
Dr. Chung provided a good overview of the different levels of med protocols that the Cornell reproductive program utilizes (there are five different levels). He also explained that the 3 key ingredients for success are egg, sperm, and uterus. When my first IVF cycle that led to a transfer failed, he explained that it was a matter of luck. He remained optimistic and encouraged us to keep trying. He said that it's a matter of finding a good egg. From my perspective, my experience at Cornell would have been more optimal had I been able to see Dr. Chung all throughout monitoring, retrievals and transfers. Also, my very first IVF cycle was canceled because the eggs did not respond to the injectibles. I have since consulted with three other REs who stated they would not have recommended that particular protocol for my situation. But I do understand that it is generally a matter of trial and error and that each woman can respond differently to med protocols.
Hundreds of women come for monitoring and appointments every day [to Cornell]. Dr. Chung did his best to explain things but it is difficult to spend more than 15 minutes with a patient. It is also difficult to call or email and get a response directly from your specific doctor. After 4pm or 5pm there is an answering service. A message is sent to the attending on call for that particular evening and you get a call back about an hour or two later.

Cycle #1 - Micro-dose Lupron 2x daily 20units = 40 units daily until trigger
Result - canceled after 10 days because no response
Cycle #2 - Estrogen priming with patch commencing one week after ovulation; Gonal F 300u and Menopur 150u daily; Cetrotide
Result - three eggs, 2 retrieved, 1 fertilized, D3 transfer; 8 cell no fragmentation; BFN
Cycle #3 - same protocol as cycle #2
Result - 4 eggs, 4 retrieved, 1 immature, 2 fertilized, D3 transfer; 8 and 6 cell; BFN
Describe your experience with your nurse at Weill Cornell Medical College. (Assigned nurse: Juliana Shen and Christine Lu)
My primary nurses were responsive and compassionate.
With regard to the nursing staff, because of the hundreds of patients, occasionally there will be a prescription mishap (forget to call pharmacy or call the wrong pharmacy) or provided with wrong instructions (instructed to come back next day for monitoring and blood work when you were just there that morning and follicles are still small).
Describe your experience with Weill Cornell Medical College.
Cornell has good success rates, skilled physicians, and good labs.
However, the high volume of patients serves as a barrier to quality individual time with your RE. You will see different RE's throughout monitoring, retrieval, and transfer.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Yes, it is a cattle call with hundreds of women waiting for blood draws and ultrasound. There were a handful of times I waited an hour to get my blood drawn. Once I waited over an hour and had to leave to get to work. I did not have blood drawn or tested that day and no one seemed to noticed I missed it.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College.
IVF $10,500
ICSI $2,630
Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Cornell recommended 3-4 eggs for my age group.
What specific things went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Failed to call with results
Failed to order appropriate test
Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College.
My prescription had not been called in and it was after their office hours so left a message with the answering service and waited an hour at the pharmacy.
A nurse left a voicemail on a Sunday evening instructing me to go back for monitoring the next morning. I had to leave a message with answering service and attendant on call called me back an hour later. Attendant confirmed I did not have to go back for monitoring the next morning.
In my earlier response, I described Dr Chung as a very compassionate and supportive doctor. He has great bedside manner, and he never rushed me along. He is very caring. He did a couple of the ultrasounds and his technique was gentle. I've had other doctors at Cornell perform the ultrasound and it just felt like they were jabbing me and causing discomfort, without any recognition that it was painful.
approximate total for one round of IVF cost me about $22,000+ [at Cornell]. That includes medications which were around $5-6k. I was able to lower the estimated medication costs of $8K but receiving donations from friends that had unused medications. To use the hospital at NY Presbyterian (for retrievals and transfer) cost an additional $1100. The cycle itself cost about $10K, then additional fees for ICSI, embryo culture, egg freezing, and some other items I can't remember.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Ask all your questions during the consult, he won't rush you. And he won't look at you like you're crazy.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Dr Chung was very compassionate, did not rush me through our consult, answered all my questions and concerns, and really took the time to make me feel heard. He called me personally after the retrieval to give me an update, and also called me to provide status on the embryo development. When the cycle didn't work out, he was very empathetic and supportive.
Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
Follistim (300iu) daily and 150 Menopur, HCG trigger shot. Then progesterone shots after retrieval. We transferred 2 Day 3 embryos since they didn't look like they were going to make it to Day 5, so Dr Chung suggested we transfer at Day 3, hoping the embryos would be happier in the uterine environment since they weren't development as quickly as they should. Sadly, the embryos did not implant. The original goal was to do PGS testing on Day 5 embryos, but that didn't work out.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I can't remember her name, but she was very organized and straightforward. Very responsive to my phone calls and questions. Always received a phone call back within 2 -3 hours.
Describe your experience with Weill Cornell Medical College.
Cornell has a lot of patients, so their volume everyday is high. The downside of having monitoring hours only from 6:30-9am means that the wait could be long. I tended to go on the later end of monitoring, closer to 9am, so my time there was about 20-30 minutes. There have been times I've waited close to an hour for monitoring. The clinic is clean, spacious, and well-run. If I needed to talk to billing, they would try to accommodate me while I was there. There is also a genetic counselor in the office. Cornell also closes down for a couple of weeks, two times a year, June and December. This is to recalibrate all their equipment.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
monitoring hours were from 6:30am - 9am. I had flexibility with my schedule so that allowed me to go later. the wait was about 20-30 minutes usually, with busy days up to an hour. i would prefer more flexible hours. the volume of patients here is so high that there are women waiting in line as early as 6am. The nurses call out your name when it's your turn, but the waiting area is so big, sometimes you can't hear them. And sometimes I was afraid to use the restroom in fear that I'd miss them calling my name.

He [Dr Chung] wasn't as warm as my other Doctor but he was great. He's nice and cracks a few jokes to lighten the mood. Any time I hear of someone having fertility issues I would send them to him in a heartbeat...I've never regretted my decision to go see Dr. Chung, my only regret is that I never tried an IUI at Cornell because I had exhausted all my benefits for it (and a personally paid one).
The clinic [Weill Cornell Fertility] is truly a baby making factory. That's why you're there and that's what their good at....Everyone at the clinic has a specific role, it's the most efficiently run operation I've ever seen. I didn't mind the way I was treated, I had 1 goal in mind and they knew how to accomplish it.
How was your experience with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
I was referred to him after going to a private practice. He wasn't as warm as my other Doctor but he was great. He's nice and cracks a few jokes to lighten the mood. Any time I hear of someone having fertility issues I would send them to him in a heartbeat. He's in the baby making business and he's great at it...and he has all the resources at Cornell which put my expeience on a different playing field. My original Doctor told me day 1 - "we'll get you pregnant" which was all I wanted go hear at the time. I loved him but at this stage with Something so personal and upsetting you need more than a nice Doctor and a positive attitude. 5 clomid cycles and iui's later no baby I had to go to the professionals. Ive never regretted my decision to go see Dr. Chung, my only regret is that I never tried an IUI at Cornell because I had exhausted all my benefits for it (and a personally paid one). Watching IUIs discussed with other patients there it was a very different run operation that at my original Doctor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Don't think twice. Go! You're one goal is to have a baby, they'll/he'll be your best odds. Just know you're going to a baby making factory, that's how you'll feel because that's what it is, and right now, that's what you need.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
Not so much the doctor but the clinic is truly a baby making factory. That's why you're there and that's what their good at. When I saw Chung he was great and sweet and efficient but he checked, he explained and he left. Often times as you're getting closer to IVF you're there daily seeing whatever Doctor is there. Everyone at the clinic has a specific role, it's the most efficiently run operation I've ever seen. I didn't mind the way I was treated, I had 1 goal in mind and they knew how to accomplish it.
Describe the protocols Pak Chung used in your cycles at Weill Cornell Medical College and their degree of success.
We used birth control to start my cycle, then 2 different kinds of injectables before the retrieval. Following the retrieval I was on progesterone injections until I was about 7 weeks pregnant.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Some were more compassionate than others. Some were better at drawing blood than others. Overall, you're experience with them is limited, short spurts but they were great.

Baby making factory. Efficiency like I've never seen in my life. Clean and nice but I must emphasize the efficiency.

He [Dr. Pak Chung] personally calls you after every major result. He seems to genuinely care about your results. He has great bedside mannerisms...Explains things in great detail... Listens to my concerns. Adjusts the protocol appropriately. Performs further testing for further assessment of our issues...expect long descriptive answers and his honest opinion...FET 2 natural cycle w progesterone injections 1cc, baby aspirin and folic acid. BFN.
The nurses [at Weill Cornell Medical College] were very compassionate. They remembered my case and seemed to really care about my outcomes...Sometimes a long wait but sometimes not. Definitely felt like a factory [for monitoring appointments]...It’s a large place, but it feels small because the team seems to remember you and your case. Since it is big during egg retrieval you don’t typically see your dr. I do feel like they could be more through w their initial assessments w patients prior to starting ivf.

[Dr. Pak Chung] is a great doctor. I was very well informed of every step...personally called with material results...recommended a few great (non IFV related) specialists that I had to see for existing conditions. Everything he predicted happened...standard protocol of 300GonalF/150 Menopure for 12 days
[Weill Cornell Medical College] is well organized....billing department can be a little overwhelming as with any hospital...Get the check-in card from the front desk so that you could swipe the card to check in during monitoring hours...wonderful primary nurse assigned...listened to me with compassion and was able to answer my questions

fully covered by my insurance
Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Recommended one embryo transfer due to my age and higher risk of multiples.
This was a long time ago, but I clearly remember being treated with respect and kindness. All of Dr. Chung's decisions were intelligent, well thought out, and well explained. He's a consummate professional. We had been using another clinic where the superstar doctor was very casual and blase, and the office was un-professional and sloppy. The change to Dr. Chung was, in my opinion, the reason we were successful.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Pak Chung at Weill Cornell Medical College?
I seem to remember that he was a bit soft spoken and reserved, so you must be very direct and listen closely to what he says. I'd give that advice to anyone for any encounter with a doctor.

He wasn't overly chatty, but he was very kind, clear, and compassionate. I have great respect for Dr. Pak Chung.

I don't remember specifics, but he was much more professional and exacting and scientific than our previous doctor. He's not going to be your best friend, but he was kind and compassionate, and he was excellent at his work and took it very seriously.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Weill Cornell Medical College.
I don't remember any specifics, besides their being very professional.
Describe Pak Chung's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Our twin birth was the very best thing that could have happened in our family. It was the ideal outcome. I do worry that our children are part of a specific trend, from a specific time in history, and that may negatively impact them in some way that I cannot yet predict.
Dr Chung was extremely compassionate and had a good bedside manner. However, I only saw him 2x during my entire cycle and had a very difficult time getting a hold of him. Many times I had to wait over an hour for blood work and ultrasound only to be seen by a doctor I have never met... I hardly ever saw Dr Chung during my visits and could never get a hold of him to ask questions...If you have to go through Cornell, Dr Chung is one of the better choices but don't expect to see him often
I waited upwards of 2 hrs per visit for ultrasound and bloodwork [at Cornell]...Nurses were hard to get a hold of, sometimes 2-3 days to return a call. Could be very rude at times, likely due to the volume of women they saw daily...Weakness: Factory Feeling: Daily monitoring took a long time, waiting with 100+ other women, hard to get a hold of staff, etc...Many times I had to wait over an hour for blood work and ultrasound only to be seen by a doctor I have never met.

What specific things went wrong at Weill Cornell Medical College?
He [Dr. Chung] was really thoughtful, considerate and kind. He is a straight shooter and tells it like it is. He is very busy though and often times it could be hard to get in touch with him. He will eventually return calls but I often felt like there was not a ton of time spent analyzing my difficult case...Never changed my medicine during my actual IVF cycle. I did 6 cycles at this clinic and it was the same medicine / routine over and over again...Always called at night when he said he would.
[Weill Cornell] Strengths: Huge clinic, has had experience with everything, lots of different doctors to consult with for opinions. Weakness: Mad house for monitoring hours, not a lot of specialized patient attention...Long waits, lots of women, cattle call....roughly 25K for IVF cycle plus meds...The nurses always seemed very busy and rushed. They did not have a ton of insight beyond letting me know what my daily medication would be...Never changed my medicine during my actual IVF cycle.

- Never changed my medicine during my actual IVF cycle. I did 6 cycles at this clinic and it was the same medicine / routine over and over again.
With Dr. Chung, specifically, I always felt he tried very hard to be kind and to take the time to explain answers to questions. Before both of my embryo transfers, he called me to discuss the embryo quality and to give me his recommendations. When I had a number of questions, he suggested and did, in fact, meet with me in his office before each transfer to discuss details.
Undergoing treatment at Cornell generally, it's virtually impossible not to feel like a number, particularly during the monitoring portion and the retrieval at the hospital. That said, Dr. Chung, at least for me, did his best given his caseload to provide individual care and attention.

They are incredibly busy but usually return calls within the same business day. All conversations were very rushed so it was important to have a sense of my questions before we spoke.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.
The experience was hard as it was very impersonal. That said, with such a large volume of patients the focus is almost exclusively on moving people in and out. For this reason, I was usually in and out within 30-45 minutes.
He [Pak Chung] had a very humane approach to infertility treatment, and even though there were many reasons to suggest donor eggs, he emphasized that I had never done an IVF cycle and that there were also many positive factors in our case...Weill Cornell is a big operation so it is not super personal - I saw many drs other than Dr Chung during the stimulation phase ,and some were really brusque and cold. But I liked how organized the clinic was. It does feel like a factory but the good part of that is you never wait long and they know what they are doing. WHe I did see Dr Chung he was very warm and helpful. His nurses were great communicators.

Dr Chung gave me my miracle baby., after my last doctor told me to use donor eggs. He looked at my file after our first cycle With him was a complete failure and told me he would not give up on me. He is truly what all doctors should be and I am forever grateful for him....It [Cornell] seemed to be a well oiled machine. All the nurses were so wonderful and caring, I am not an easy stick and they all knew me and knew exactly what to do.

I couldn't say enough about him [Dr Chung]. He was wonderful. Caring, kind, intelligent, willing to listen to me, calmed my fears, set reasonable expectations, explored different paths when things didn't work, etc... Initially he wasn't super warm. Don't dismiss him because of that if he isn't super warm at first. He is wonderful.
Monitoring [at Cornell Weill Fertility] was sometimes long. If you wanted to be in and out quickly, you arrived before it was open and waited. Then, it could move quickly. Otherwise, you might be there for a long time. There were lots of women.
