How was your experience with Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Dr. Keyhan came into our lives when we were already deep into the IVF process and feeling very overwhelmed and stressed. She was a balm to my soul during the most traumatic times I've ever experienced.
IVF was incredibly challenging for me mentally, physically, and emotionally. All I've ever wanted was to be a mother, but my body struggled to cooperate. This led to so many internalized feelings of failure as well as deep sadness. Dr. Keyhan understood that this process was not straightforward or easy and helped me white knuckle through it when I had to.
Although we didn't see her every appointment due to PAMF's model, she always messaged to check in and I knew she looked over the notes. My care was highly individualized. She is also brilliant and on top of the research - she could answer every question I threw at her.
When our first daughter died shortly before her due date due to a cord accident, Dr. Keyhan sat on the phone with me and cried for an hour even though I was no longer under her care. When I was ready to move forward again, she helped me create a plan - even though she was out of the office on maternity leave. I knew she was always available for consultation, even when out of office, due to my extenuating circumstances and difficulty trusting other providers. Once she was back, we returned to her care and she moved heaven and earth to create the most seamless retrieval I have ever experienced. Despite the high level of PTSD I was navigating, it was the easiest experience we had in 7 cycles.
My partner was always treated as an equal in the process and she asked him if he had questions each appointment. When she did the transfer that resulted in our second daughter and first living child, Dr. Keyhan ensured he could be nearby even with COVID protocols and ran out to give him a hug and update as soon as it was completed.
She legitimately cares about her patients and cares about them in an authentic way. This is even true for the patients like me - medical outliers whose bodies don't cooperate and who have experienced trauma and have PTSD as well as a high need for information and control.
I know I'm not an easy patient for all the above reasons, but Dr. Keyhan never made me feel like a burden or too much. I think of her every time I think of either of my girls and am so glad our paths crossed.
Anyone would be fortunate to work with her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Feel safe to ask any questions you may have - she will never do you wrong. Also know that you're able to be authentic about your full experience - you're a human to her, not just a number.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Sanaz always sat with me in whatever feeling I was experiencing. She made a point to hold space for the hope as well as the fear and also deep grief during our stillbirth. With our stillbirth, she offered to come to the hospital and be with me even though I was no longer a patient. She also understood the PTSD I was left with after this experience and other IVF trauma and worked with me to develop a trauma-informed care plan. At no point did I feel shamed, pathologized, or like a burden. It was obvious that she genuinely cared about us and our goals. She went above and beyond to be the point of contact when we needed her. We also never felt rushed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
Nurses changed depending on the day but everyone was lovely overall.
Describe your experience with Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
PAMF is fine. It's a large clinic with multiple sites so there can be many appointments and eyes on your case but also many doctors and travel. Because they are part of a large organization, a great deal of bureaucracy was always in place. I did not have a good experience with one of the the providers but the team worked to help me avoid appointments with him afterwards. Although I loved my doctor, I didn't have a strong connection to the clinic. I would follow her over staying with PAMF if she left.
Describe Sanaz Keyhan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
We were advised to only use one PGT euploid embryo l. This was clearly explained - it seemed to be PAMFs policy for euploids due to concerns about multiples.
What specific things went wrong at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Failed to order appropriate test
Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
One of the providers failed to catch an ectopic pregnancy, despite my concerns that I expressed and the ultrasound done the morning of the rupture. When we called with a positive pregnancy test but grave concerns about my pain and symptoms, we were congratulated and dismissed. When we called back, we were routed through answering services for hours. I had nearly bled out by the time we were advised to go to the ER. We did not go sooner on our own because my husband felt confident that if anything was truly wrong, the clinic would have caught it - and I was in literal, medical shock and couldn't take myself or move. I very nearly died. I know this was an honest mistake which is why we continued with PAMF but I also lost trust in some of their procedures and protocols. Some of these were changed after my experience, either due to risk management or learning opportunities.

How was your experience with Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Dr. Keyhan is a wonderful doctor (and human being). She has an amazing bed side manner, meaning she is warm, patient and comforting. She explains everything in detail. She really takes time to listen your concerns and answer every question you may have. She also set reasonable expectations for my treatment plan and so far everything that she predicted has been on track.
Bedside manner, especially in this field is very important to me. I feel as a patient of Dr. Keyhan, I felt really cared for, in an above and beyond aspect. When I came in for my IVF consultation we realized that it was now or never and she got the ball rolling very quickly for me- which I was so greatly appreciate of. She was also very reassuring and made sure to keep things very positive even when I doubted things. I know that doctors can't guarantee anything at all, but the support and warmth Dr. Keyhan has provided was exceptional. Wonderful doctor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
I would keep her my primary doctor if I could, that is the advice I would give.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Dr. Keyhan is the prime example of an amazing doctor. She is warm and optimistic but also a realist. She is super patient, understanding, and has the best side manner.
Describe the protocols Sanaz Keyhan used in your cycles at Palo Alto Medical Foundation and their degree of success.
The overall strategy Dr. Keyhan prescribed for me was an an Antagonist Protocol. This was decided based on the fact that I had lower normal counts in my follicles and that my partner and I had successful conceived and birthed a child 4 years prior. We also planned on doing a fresh transfer based on this as well.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Palo Alto Medical Foundation. (Assigned nurse: Kim )
I felt like the IVF nurse coordinator I was assigned was extremely organized and communicative. I appreciated the clinic's overall approach of seeing patients before 9 am in the morning and letting me know exactly what I needed to do in both written clear instructions and also by calling me. I felt this worked so well for someone like me who likes to know the plan and see it word by word on what I need to do. It made it feel easier than I expected.
Describe your experience with Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
I think the biggest strengthen is the organization of how the nurses and doctors meet each day about all the patients that are currently in treatment. Even though I was driving the hill to see them early I appreciated that my plan was thoroughly thought out each day and communicated clearly and efficiently that afternoon. I felt being seen all the time was excessive at the time, but appreciate how thorough they are with that.
Weaknesses the billing for IVF could communicate a bit more clearly with the front desk, but for the most part I felt everything was very smooth with my treatment. I was nervous for all the information and appointments but it went by quickly and efficiently.
Despite attending the clinic for...three timed intercourse (TIC) cycles...I only saw [Dr. Sanaz Keyhan] twice...I have endometriosis...I was informed that there were no medications available to reduce this inflammation, which I later found out is not accurate...nice and shows empathy, but the procedure and treatment at this clinic are very routine
[Palo Alto Medical Foundation] is well-suited for routine procedures, offering convenience and accessibility....the nurses, are very friendly and attentive, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment...extended hours, as it remains open on holidays and weekends...those with more complex medical conditions...might find the treatment options here somewhat limited
How was your experience with Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
The doctor is nice and shows empathy, but the procedure and treatment at this clinic are very routine. If you don’t have inflammation or other medical issues, this place might work well for you. However, if you have conditions like mine, I recommend treating those first or seeking care elsewhere. Otherwise, you risk wasting your insurance limits here.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
Get a ob/gyn that also treat fertility issues.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Sanaz Keyhan at Palo Alto Medical Foundation?
My experience during the first three timed intercourse (TIC) cycles was somewhat frustrating. Despite attending the clinic for three cycles, I only saw the doctor twice. During this time, my egg development was slow, even with the prescribed 1 tablet of Letrozole. It wasn't until the third cycle that the doctor recognized that the dosage was insufficient, and only then did she adjust my prescription to 2 tablets for the next cycle. Additionally, I have endometriosis, a condition known to cause inflammation. However, I was informed that there were no medications available to reduce this inflammation, which I later found out is not accurate. This experience has left me questioning the level of personalized care I received.
Describe the protocols Sanaz Keyhan used in your cycles at Palo Alto Medical Foundation and their degree of success.
1 tablet of Lectrozole for three cycles of TIC
then 2 tables for three cycles of IUI
Describe your experience with Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
This clinic is well-suited for routine procedures, offering convenience and accessibility. The staff, particularly the nurses, are very friendly and attentive, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment. One of the significant advantages of this clinic is its extended hours, as it remains open on holidays and weekends, which is highly convenient for those with busy schedules or unexpected needs. However, it's important to note that while the clinic excels in routine care, those with more complex medical conditions, such as inflammation or other underlying health issues, might find the treatment options here somewhat limited. In such cases, it may be more beneficial to seek specialized care elsewhere to ensure that your specific needs are thoroughly addressed. Overall, for standard procedures and general care, this clinic offers reliable service in a convenient and patient-friendly setting.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
I tested for an LH surge and promptly informed the clinic, expecting a call to schedule my IUI. However, no one contacted me. When I followed up, I was informed that only one time slot was available for the IUI, which was very inconvenient for my schedule.
Dr. Keyhan always came in to our appointments with such warmth and friendliness. She always too time to check in with me, ask questions and respond to my questions...is very professional and compassionate...Most importantly you can feel her sincerity and care for her patients...Sometimes I came in with questions based on my own research and she would always come back to me after looking into it herself. I appreciated her openness. There were also a couple of times where she ensured to meet with us even on days where she was scheduled for surgery. She also personally checked in with us via call when we were concerned early on in our pregnancy even when she was on vacation. As i have anovulation/PCOs. We did timed intercourse by starting on a 5 day treatment of Letrozole (starting around day 3 of cycle). Initially we started with 2.5mg but eventually ended up using 7.5mg as my body did not respond to the lower dose. Each month I ovulated with about 3 times using ovidrel to trigger ovulation (I had high fertility detected via ovulation kit but did not reach peak fertility by the time expected). Along with Letrozole I took 10mg dexamethasone for 10 days at the start of the cycle to lower DHEAs levels.

Per my Anthem Blue Cross insurance, for timed intercourse and oral medication and injectables I only had to pay co-pay of $25 per visit and about $100 for the injectable medication which I didn’t need each cycle.

Describe the protocols Sanaz Keyhan used in your cycles at Palo Alto Medical Foundation and their degree of success.
Dr. Sanaz suggested us to undergo IVF directly without any IUI or other alternatives. It’s because i have low overian reserve with an autoimmune Kidney condition. So I thought this is a wise choice. As my egg count is low we ended up retrieving 8 or 9 eggs. so she suggest doing ICSI, which gave us 3 good grade embryos. As my first two transfers (one embryo each) ended up with early miscarriage, we did an ERA test before our last embryo transfer. Results came out normal, but it at least served as a proof that our transfers were done on right time. Luckily, my third transfer gave up positive results and i’m 19 weeks pregnant at the moment.
