Dr Kuokkanen always explained each aspect of my fertility journey in complete detail with clarity and transparency. It always felt like we were a team and I knew she was always working toward the same outcome with me. She would call me personally whenever she needed to share information with me along the way in my treatment. I NEVER felt like a number.
[NYU Langone RS of NY is a] Wonderful clinic where people speak to you by name. You never feel like a number and you feel completely understood and heard. The team would remember me and know me which was a huge improvement from other clinics friends have told me about...The entire team at the Brooklyn office was always kind, compassionate and professional.
How was your experience with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
As a queer couple my insurance required me to perform 6 IUI's first before moving to IVF. I had two chemicals during that time which were unexplained. Once we were able to move forward with IVF my insurance would only cover 3 transfers. It was within the first two transfers that I experienced back to back blighted ovums/miscarriages and to which Dr. Kuokkanen suggested I seek out the help of a reproductive immunologist, before moving on to a 3rd transfer. On paper and all tests she ran for me, nothing explained my multiple losses and if not for her recommendation of looking into RI I would have simply thought my infertility was unexplained and never even known about the world of immunology for fertility. Once I got on a treatment plan with my RI, Dr. Kuokkanen was more than willing to work in conjunction with their protocol (which can be a challenge to find as many RE's reject the approach to RI) I truly believe that without Dr K, I would still have no idea how to treat my infertility and I wouldn't be preparing to welcome my baby come March.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
Trust in the process and know that Dr. K will do whatever she can to provide the best care to you. Aside from my egg retrievals she also performed a polypectomy and a D&C for me and I would completely trust her to perform any other necessary procedures needed. She is highly skilled and a true professional.

How was your experience with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
Dr Kuokkanen leads a team of wonderful people who work hard and are dedicated. Working at a fertility office is a demanding job where they have to be there very early in the morning and despite weather and EVERY day of the week. There were many times they were there with cheerful dispositions during snow storms. The staff went out of their way to make sure I received medications that were time sensitive. The sonogram specialists were kind and informative. Every last one of them made a huge difference in my life to which I will be forever grateful, but the one I am indebted to is Dr Kuokkanen. She helped me make difficult decisions and gave me the information I always needed to make them, while always respecting my opinions on matters. I would recommend this wonderful caring group of people to my best friend as well as all of those who read this. You will not regret it!

Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York and their degree of success.
I've went through 4 IUI cycles and 1 IVF cycle.
Each time an IUI cycle fails, Dr. Kuokkanen would think of other ways to help me conceive, such as by changing the medication and dosage. Although none of the IUI cycle was successful, Dr. Kuokkanen did not drag me on to continue to do more of the IUI cycle. Instead, she proposed the IVF idea, which I have successfully conceived on the first transfer and is almost 10 weeks pregnant!
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
All IUI cycles were covered by my health insurance.
IVF Cycle was not covered by insurance:
Phase 1: $12,950
Medication: $4,075
Genetic Testing: $2,425 (Cooper Genomics)
Phase 2: $2,800
Phase 3: $1,750
Injections: $45
I think Dr Kuokkanen has great experience and is very well informed but I don't think her communication style was the best match for me. Many times she explained things in medical terms and it was hard for me to follow along or fully understand. She was on vacation while I started my IVF treatment and felt that I was left on my own. When my body was not reacting as expected to the injections she or any of the other doctors did not change my treatment in any way. The thing that most bother me was that after having 0 embryos from my first IVF treatment, I felt that she was very negative about my chances for future IVF treatment.
The clinic [NYU Langone] itself felt very unorganized and there was a lack of communication. I felt like a number more than a human. The finance department was hard to get a hold of and many times didn't return my calls. I also didn't like that to do IVF I had to have a consultation with the doctor, then a consultation with the nurse practitioner and then a class to show you how to do the injections. For each of those 3 appointments I had to pay a copay. It really felt like that could have been all in 1 appointment or 2 at the most. Not only did it feel like I was being nickel and dimed but also like they didn't value my time.

Ask her to explain things in clearer detail. However, I would not see Dr Kuokkanen while she is practicing at RS of NY.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
The clinic really lacks in communication. I was frequently not given the proper information in the right way or at the right time. I also did not like that they have so many nurses and any of them will call you with your results from that day. I think it would be easier to only speak with 1 or 2 nurses that actually know your case especially since it is so hard to speak to the doctor.
During my IVF my body was not responding to the injections and I was only seeing 2 eggs. Dr Kuokkanen was on vacation and I kept being told that one of the other doctors would call me to discuss but day after day I never actually spoke to another doctor. The nurses would just call me and say they wanted me to continue with my current dosage. When Dr Kuokkanen finally returned to the office from her vacation I was on day 11 of injections and she still did not call me to discuss my situation even though I tried calling to speak with her multiple times and was promised she would call me.
I also felt that I had to do a lot of the leg work communicating between the finance department and my insurance. I spent hours back and forth on the phone or email.
Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York and their degree of success.
1st IUI cycle I took Chlomophine, 2 pills a day for 5 days. Uterine lining was thin so I took estrogen twice a day vaginally until the IUI transfer and then I continued to take estrogen twice a day orally. This cycle resulted in a chemical pregnancy.
2nd IUI cycle I took Letrozole, 2 pills a day for 5 days. Uterine lining was thin so I took estrogen twice a day vaginally until the IUI transfer and then I continued to take estrogen twice a day orally. I had an IUI transfer on Sunday and was given a trigger shot and then came back the next day for another IUI transfer because my follicles had stopped growing and my bloodwork was borderline surging. One week after IUI transfer I was prescribed progesterone suppositories to be inserted twice a day because my levels were low. My pregnancy test was negative and I was told I possibly didn't ovulate.
3rd IUI cycle I did a natural cycle because the sonogram on day 3 was showing a cyst or follicle. I was told to take estrogen from the beginning of the cycle and progesterone after IUI transfer. This cycle resulted in a chemical pregnancy.
IVF cycle- took 300 units of Gonal-F & 225 IU of Menopur starting 2/14 and did my trigger shot the night of 2/26. Had 4 eggs retrieved on 2/28. Only 2 eggs fertilized and none became embryos.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
The nurses overall are very nice and caring but I think they are overworked which causes a breakdown in communication. I think it would be better if I had been assigned to only 1 or 2 nurses.

The appointment wait times were also fairly long. What you would think would be fast monitoring appointments often took far too long and involved a lot of waiting around. Having to come to the doctors most times on a daily basis for monitoring before work is already hard enough but then to sit around waiting for so long is beyond frustrating. It just always felt like they didn't value my time or life outside of the office.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
There was a lot of miscommunication. Especially concerning was I had discussed my protocol with the Dr for IVF and then when I went in for monitoring many days later, the nurses had not been informed of the changes to my protocol.
When I had a biopsy done I had to call the nurses multiple times to get my results that were past due. It seemed like they kept forgetting to follow up with the lab. Once they finally got the results they didn't pass them to the doctor to review until I called again asking about them.
Another issue I had was during my first IUI cycle I was told my pap was out dated and I said I really didn't have much time to see my obgyn and they just said ok. Then it was brought up again by another nurse and I told her the same thing and she said ok. Then after my IUI transfer another nurse finally told me that I would need to get an updated pap in order to continue treatment if I am not pregnant and that it was clinic policy. That was completely understandable so I called my obgyn and made an appointment but the next available appointment wasn't for a couple of weeks. After I took my pregnancy test and had a chemical pregnancy a nurse Barbara called me and asked about my pap. I told her the date of the appointment and she very aggressively told me that I would not be allowed to start another treatment this cycle because of the pap. I was already devastated by the chemical pregnancy and then to hear I couldn't continue treatment was awful. Barbara's manner of handling the situation was very inappropriate and I was literally sobbing at work. I then asked to have Dr Koukkanen call me and when she did she said Barbara was out of line and that since I have the pap scheduled I can start another round of treatment. I never felt comfortable working with Barbara again.
Overall I have had a positive experience with Dr. Kuokkanen...When I first began treatment with her we had a very thorough consultation, during which she outlined a series of diagnostic procedures and tests in layman’s terms. She me feel cared for and that I was in good hands. After that consultation communication has been a little spotty. She seems to rely heavily on nursing to communicate most aspects of treatment, which I hear is common at other practices. That said, I have been able to reach her by phone to discuss my treatment plan after leaving messages with nurses.
You have to be proactive about managing your appointments here [Global Fertility & Genetics]. The clinic staff seem a bit stressed and don’t call with appointment reminders. Sometimes they are not great about returning phone calls or emails... Juany [nurse] is extremely kind, patient, and thorough. It seems like the doctor relies on her to run the ship, including being a touchpoint for patients about medication, signing legal paperwork, walking patients through treatment plans, and scheduling visits. She is lovely to talk to and I get the sense that she cares deeply about helping patients. Communication has been a bit inconsistent though, and I have learned days after emailing the general nursing email address that no one received my questions. This has been a consistent part of my experience. Everyone is amazing in person, but as soon as I leave I'm not sure if I'll be able to connect with nursing or the doctor within the next few days.
How was your experience with Satu Kuokkanen at Global Fertility and Genetics?
Overall I have had a positive experience with Dr. Kuokkanen. As a newbie in this area, it was important to me to find a doctor who made me feel confident. I wanted someone to painstakingly explain everything in terms I could understand, and help me get to the bottom of my fertility issues. When I first began treatment with her we had a very thorough consultation, during which she outlined a series of diagnostic procedures and tests in layman’s terms. During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Satu Kuokkanen at Global Fertility and Genetics?
This practice recently opened, and most aspects appear to be thoughtfully considered. In particular, the bright, welcoming waiting areas with comfortable furniture and friendly staff instantly made me feel at ease. From my previous provider I had grown accustomed to being ignored or receiving vague responses to questions via a confusing patient portal. So I was shocked that Juany, the nursing director at Global Fertility, was routinely available by phone after normal business hours to patiently explain aspects of my treatment to me, or plan out my following visit. She has been a calming presence throughout our experience.
Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at Global Fertility and Genetics and their degree of success.
After we determined that I have one blocked tube using HSG and a follow-up MRI, I opted to try IUI with Clomid. The doctor suggested this approach given my age (34) and norma ovarian reserve, though she did warn that success rates with IUI were low. I tried one round that was unsuccessful, and felt discouraged. I had previously had 3 rounds of monitored Clomid cycles with my previous doctor without success. Dr. Kuokkanen suggested that the blocked tube could potentially limit IUI success if follicles developed on the blocked side, and suggested that we might consider IVF as a next step. We are going to try our first cycle in a few months.

Describe your experience with Global Fertility and Genetics.
Strengths: The facility itself is beautiful--new, clean, and comfortable. The nurses are incredibly nice and accommodating. I trust Dr. Kuokkanen's expertise and thoroughness. I have her complete attention when we meet, and have been able to reach her on the phone several times to ask questions about treatment.
Weaknesses: I feel like I have to be my own advocate perhaps more than I was expecting. They don't do appointment reminders or confirmations, so I have to keep track myself. Communication is inconsistent, so I often need to follow-up several times before I can reach the nursing department.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Satu Kuokkanen at Global Fertility and Genetics.
$600 for IUI (medication and procedure)
$13,000 for IVF with fresh transfer (single embryo) plus $5,500 for medication
Describe Satu Kuokkanen's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Global Fertility and Genetics.
My doctor only does single embryo transfers in the majority of younger patients who have high-quality embryos. I feel relieved about the lower risk of multiples but also apprehensive that a single embryo won’t implant.
What specific things went wrong at Global Fertility and Genetics?
Lost appointments

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Global Fertility and Genetics.
I scheduled a meeting with my doctor to discuss discontinuing IUI and moving on to IVF, and I believe the nurses forgot my appointment or accidentally scheduled me for the following day. I was able to make the appointment but had to move around a few meetings to make it work.
That said, I was glad with the final outcome. I had a full hour with my doctor to discuss the ins and outs of IVF. They really do care about patients here, but just seem a bit overwhelmed.
She [Dr. Kuokkanen] was kind and a great listener. Dr. K. was open minded to hear ideas and theories and discussed them even if she didn’t agree instead of dismissing me like other doctors did...Another doctor pushed us to donor eggs (for $20,000 not covered by insurance) without a valid diagnosis...We explained this to Dr. Kuokkanen and she never once said we needed donor anything. She said “as long as you’re willing to try, I’m willing to try.” It was under her guidance that we eventually were able to have our own genetic child. When she said “I’m sorry this cycle didn’t work” I felt in my heart like she meant it. Dr. K is an amazing doctor and I highly recommend her!
I trusted her [nurse at Long Island IVF] and would happily work with her again...[monitoring was a] Well oiled machine. But it still takes time because Lake Success is a small office so get there early...This practice is a ‘Center of Excellence’ within NYS employee health insurance. For us, that meant no co-pays for appointments associated with cycles but co-pays for medications. I think for all of our cycles we spent approximately $400 in total.

We used menopur, follistim, and gannirelix for two cycles. We switched to gonal f for third cycle due to a shortage with insurance company. For the third cycle we also added lovenox due to a join decision (hey, why not? was truly the suggestion I had). My husband used Clomid for all cycles. Baby was born from third cycle with Dr. K (our fifth total).

Dr. Kuokkanen were extremely kind of patient with me. I could feel her compassion for her clients and she's so professional and capable with her skills. Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF and their degree of success.
I was successful with my first IVF cycle with Dr. Kuokkanen in 2013, and 2 years later, I experienced two failures with another doctor. I decided to go back to Dr. Kuokkanen and chatted with her about my concerns. She put me on estrogen patches before I started my injection cycles. along the injection cycle, she broke the usage of the meds into morning dosage and evening dosage. I felt that her strategies were very flexible and carefully planned out. and the best thing is, it definitely worked!
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York - Long Island IVF. (Assigned nurse: Lorraine Karagannis)

Describe your experience with RMA of New York - Long Island IVF.
I have achieved two successful cycles and two failed cycles with Long Island IVF. I think if I picked the right doctor then things can work out beautifully. Most of the staff here are friendly, courteous, and nice. However, they are a little bit disorganized, and you must be on top of your own case, and follow through everything carefully.

During our first visit she [Dr. Kuokkanen] took her time thoroughly reviewing my medical history with me, and didn't rush to determine a diagnosis and treatment. Her attention to detail was especially important to me as Black patients often face certain health disparities and outcomes. She encourages her patients to take an active role in the process. As I would read and research new info, she was always open to my questions and made the effort to return phone calls on the same day...
Even if things were very busy or intense, I felt as if the staff [at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of NY] was caring to the delicate patient population they are dealing with....Understand the rotation/structure of the clinic. Otherwise you may be confused that you don't see the doctor for bloodwork/sono in the morning, and then wait until the afternoon to hear from the nurse or doctor.....
How was your experience with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
Dr. Kuokkanen sets the standard for patient-centered care. She treats her patients with dignity. She was the third RE that I tried, and on the first visit I knew she was the doctor I wanted to guide my fertility journey. During our first visit she took her time thoroughly reviewing my medical history with me, and didn't rush to determine a diagnosis and treatment. Her attention to detail was especially important to me as Black patients often face certain health disparities and outcomes. She encourages her patients to take an active role in the process. As I would read and research new info, she was always open to my questions and made the effort to return phone calls on the same day. While this could be a taxing process, it was my best medical experience yet. I'm truly grateful for our healthy baby boy.

Describe Satu Kuokkanen's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
Strong preference for single transfer. I did my homework on Fertility IQ to get comfortable with her recommendation.
Dr Kuokkanen is highly experienced...knows what she is doing...she communicates she cares about people and loves what she does...After the IUI process, there was an infection for which she was prescribed medication, which then caused an allergic reaction and other complications
[NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York] strengths are that they were friendly and professional...always asked how I was doing and was very genuine about it...weaknesses...would tell me the appointment was scheduled, but later call me that no schedule was made...coordination between the front desk and the nurses was not always in sync

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
On numerous occasions, Dr Kuokkanen personally called me even after her office hours to make sure she could communicate what I needed to do for the next step. She made me feel comfortable and never forced any treatment that I was not sure about. She provided step by step process to ensure we are well educated on all the options. We did not feel like a number but rather a human/person who was going through difficulty.
Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York and their degree of success.
After the IUI process, there was an infection for which she was prescribed medication, which then caused an allergic reaction and other complications. She made sure all the proper care was provided to me before sending me off to a primary doctor.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
There was one nurse who was very compassionate and organized and made sure that my anxiety level was handled with empathy. I do not remember her name but she was nice and made me feel like she loves what she does.
I can't say the same for others, not all nurses can show the same level of compassion, and at times made me feel like just another number that needed things to be done for that day.
Describe your experience with NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
The clinic's strengths are that they were friendly and professional. They always asked how I was doing and was very genuine about it.
Some of their weaknesses are that they would tell me the appointment was scheduled, but later call me that no schedule was made. The coordination between the front desk and the nurses was not always in sync, which can be a little overwhelming.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
They had sent a prescription to a pharmacy and failed to notify me to make me aware. Which caused a delay in the process.
Sometimes I would schedule appointments and I was never made aware of what those appointments were for and it caused several confusion.
I wish the clinic was a little better at providing information and also communication. This was my first time going through something like this and of course, I am not aware of the next steps.

How was your experience with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
Dr. Kuokkanen makes me feel as though she is always rooting for me. She takes the time to ask how I am feeling and praises me when I can articulate how I feel. I was very honest in the beginning with my fears of infertility. I tend to see so often that since doctors do this so much they forget that the patient doesn't do this as much as them, as this is new for the patient but no so new for the doctor. I told her from the very beginning that at times I may need to be handled with "kid gloves". I am very fortunate that I am able to verbalize my mental state and emotions. And she takes that in to consideration when trying to convey what the next steps are for me, while also praising me for being able to articulate how I feel.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
To be as honest as possible with how you are as an individual so she knows how to treat you, not just physically but emotionally as well.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York?
I feel that since doctors see patients everyday and do this everyday they tend to forget that the patient doesn't do this everyday. Me personally I went into this experience as honest as possible. I stated to Dr. Kuokkanen that while I understand that she does this everyday and this is her profession, that I do not do this every day and at times I may needed to be handled with "kid gloves". She understood and takes the time to make sure I understand what she is saying while also taking my feelings into consideration. I would say that it most definitely makes me feel like a human when a very busy professional takes the time to ask "how are you feeling?". With all that being said I feel very comfortable and taken care of under the treatment of Dr. Kuokkanen. In turn that that is what makes me feel like a human. The fact that I was honest with how I personally am and how she understood and applied that to how she treats me as a patient, makes me feel like a human and not a number.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
I was seen on a Wednesday and was scheduled for that following Friday. When the office called me on that Wednesday I was in a meeting at work. I realized that after my meeting the only thing I processed was that I was to come back in on the following Friday. When I was finished with my meeting I called back and explained that all I really processed was date and time of my next visit and that I had some questions. They advised that they would call me back but didn't get back to me till the next day, Thursday. Thursday morning they advised that I also had a visit scheduled for that day but I was not aware of the Thursday appointment. I got upset and started crying because I didn't want to miss an appointment as I know this is a very time sensitive matter. They were very compassionate and and accommodating and got me an appointment within the hour.

Easy to arrange appointments [at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York]. Clinic is open 7 days/week which offers flexibility. Very good follow up policy on lab work results. Clinic uses online portal which allows patients to view their record at any given time with most up to date lab work and doctor notes if any As far as weaknesses, wish there was more time taken to explain steps and plans going forward

Dr. Kuokkanen treated us like we're part of her family. She was very caring and kind. Most of all, she is great at what she does. We had a few failed IVF treatments with another doctor. We then came to Dr. Kuokkanen. She was able to find the root problem and recommended a day 6 transfer as opposed to the typical day 5 transfer. That solved the problem. This will be our 2nd child that Dr. Kuokkanen helped us with.
She is an expert. A SUPER Doctor!

Under the care of Dr. Kuokkanen, I undeniably felt like a person, not just a number. Her remarkable ability to remember specific details of my medical history and connect with me on a personal level set her apart. While I don't expect this level of personalized care from all doctors, Dr. Kuokkanen has set a new standard for how patients should be treated. She has truly been an exceptional doctor, and I couldn't be more satisfied with her care.
The [NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York] clinic is a clean and pleasant environment, with a friendly and accommodating staff. However, the standout feature of the clinic is undoubtedly the exceptional doctors who provide top-notch care. If I had to choose an area where there could be improvement would possibly be the messaging service. I understand that the clinic must get a large amount of calls a day, and when the front desk is unable to answer your call the messaging service may not always recognize the urgency of certain calls. However, the staff within the clinic is very knowledgeable and friendly.

Despite encountering a few complications along the way, Dr. Kuokkanen not only resolved these issues but did so with a high level of professionalism and a calm demeanor that instilled hope and trust within me. She performed a range of procedures, including egg retrieval, embryo transfers, D&C, polyp removal, and more. Witnessing her extensive knowledge and expertise in performing these diverse operations left me in awe.
With each surgery, Dr. Kuokkanen ensured that we maintained a sense of control and never wavered in our pursuit of success. I am so grateful for the countless hours she devoted to addressing challenges and devising strategies to reach the ultimate goal of bringing a baby into this world. To Dr. Kuokkanen, I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude.

Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York and their degree of success.
Under Dr. Satu Kuokkanen's care, my IVF journey involved a personalized approach that included specific medications such as Lovenox injections, progesterone, and estrogen to ensure a successful embryo transfer. Additionally, Dr. Kuokkanen performed various crucial procedures, including D&Cs, polyp removal, and addressing a uterine lining defect.
One significant instance was when she detected the lining defect and guided me through the process. Dr. Kuokkanen was upfront about the risks and collaborated with other specialists for second opinions, ultimately making the decision to proceed with surgery. I'm immensely grateful for her proactive approach, as it led to a successful 37-week pregnancy.
The most significant challenge I faced was discovering the lining defects after a miscarriage, necessitating specialized treatment. However, the positive outcome is the birth of my perfect baby girl. Through this experience, I've gained an overwhelming sense of gratitude—for Dr. Kuokkanen's exceptional care, for the gift of my baby, and for the journey itself.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
My experience with monitoring appointments at the clinic was quite efficient. They had an organized waiting room system where upon arrival, you'd wait for your name to be called and were promptly directed to the appropriate examination room. Even on busy clinic days, I never had to wait longer than 10-15 minutes in the waiting room. It's evident that the clinic had an effective system in place to ensure timely and smooth appointments.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Satu Kuokkanen at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
For the initial years, my treatments were covered by insurance. However, during the final year, there was a change in my insurance coverage, and I found myself no longer covered. While this change was initially nerve-wracking, the actual costs turned out to be more manageable than I had anticipated.
The frozen embryo transfer (FET) procedure cost approximately $4,200, and the additional care following a positive pregnancy test added roughly another $1,000 to the expenses. It's worth noting that I had the option to switch to another clinic covered by my insurance, but my trust in and attachment to Dr. Kuokkanen made me decide to stay at this facility and continue working with her.
In hindsight, the cost was well worth it for the exceptional care I experienced.
Describe Satu Kuokkanen's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
Dr. Kuokkanen strongly recommended a cautious approach, advocating for a single embryo transfer. Her rationale was centered on achieving the best possible outcome while minimizing potential risks.
We were placed with Dr. Kuokanen, and I feel very lucky that we were! She is extremely knowledgeable about this field and was responsive to our MANY questions as well as supportive of us during this stressful time. Sometimes, she’d even reach us after hours just to make sure that she responded to our question within the same business day. She listened to my concerns and made sure that my treatment plan was something that I was comfortable with. And last but not least, with her help and guidance, we achieved a successful pregnancy!
The [NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York] strengths would be the physicians here and the convenience being that they’re open really early in the morning (6am) and not many other clinics are. Also, most appointment are very quick, so you’re in and out, and can go about your day. What can sometimes be frustrating is not being able to reach a nurse or doctor directly and having to go through the call line. There were times when the office and I kept missing each other, and instead of being able to call them back at a direct line, so had to go through the call line and leave a message and wait again to hear back. I suggest they create a separate phone number for return calls.

If you have questions or if something isn’t clear or you’re concerned about something, don’t be afraid to speak up. Dr. Kuokanen will make sure your questions are answered and that you’re comfortable with the treatment plan. If you’re not, she’ll work with you. But since this is a confusing process, sometimes patients withdraw or just go through the motions without understanding what’s happening, and you don’t have to feel like you can’t ask questions if you have them.

Describe the protocols Satu Kuokkanen used in your cycles at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York and their degree of success.
My husband and I first went through fertility screening tests to pinpoint the reason we couldn’t conceive naturally. I did not want to do the radiation sonogram as part of the screening, so Dr. Kuokanen suggested a saline sonogram instead which I much preferred. Through this, we discovered that I had uterine polyps that were preventing implantation. Dr. Kuokanen performed the surgery to remove the polyps and removed them all. After that, we trying conceiving for a month or 2 without success and moved forward with IUI. I took Clomid prior to the IUI. It was successful and I got pregnant. However, shortly after, we discovered the embryo wasn’t viable and I needed to have a D&C which Dr. Kuokanen also performed. She also found out the reason for the miscarriage which was chromosomal, and laid out the options going forward which were IUI and IVF. I preferred to try 3 more IUIs (2 of which were natural IUIs without Clomid at my request) which failed. We then decided to move forward with IVF and she recommended we do genetic testing on the embryos as part of IVF to prevent any other miscarriages. We went through the process, and I took the necessary injections and medications. The retrieval went very well and we ended up with 9 embryos. After genetic testing, 6 were chromosomally normal and 3 were not, but I explained I wanted to keep them all, but only use the abnormal ones if absolutely needed. I also asked Kuokanen not to perform assisted hatching on the embryo we transfer back unless absolutely necessary to which she agreed and not assisted hatching took place. Kuokanen performed the transfer back which was successful and she monitored the pregnancy up until 8 weeks before release to ensure everything went well. Overall, I’m thrilled with the results, and I’m glad I had a doctor who acknowledged my concerns and was flexible to help me get through this stressful time.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at NYU Langone Reproductive Specialists of New York.
The nursing staff was efficient considering the amount of patients that they treated each day. However, due to the volume on given busy mornings, it wasn’t always possible for them to give you individualized attention or to answer questions in depth. But they were always kind, welcoming, and compassionate. The best way to find out the answers to your questions is to the call the hotline and have either the doctor or one of the nurses call you back when they don’t have so many patients waiting. I was impressed by how quickly they were able to see patients and how quickly I was in and out of the office on most occasions. I also love the early hours availability. Very convenient for me to be able to go before work!

Since it was unclear of a specific diagnosis, I was told I had unexplained secondary infertility, we started with an IUI cycle. After 3 failed rounds, we decided it was more productive time wise and financially to move forward with an IVF cycle and thankfully my first IVF transfer stuck! I followed all instructions religiously and made sure I did everything I was told. I know I was lucky the first transfer worked but I also believe it was also because of the guidance and advice of Dr. Kuokkanen.
