Dr. Fong did the bare minimum. She refused to complete tests to fully diagnose DOR. Made the diagnosis off of no AFC. One blood test with borderline normal results. Gave a 70% chance of natural pregnancy. With me having DOR and my husband having one testicle and impacted sperm quality after chemo. Wasted our money and time. Gave a devastating diagnosis without enough information and was wrong...Has no compassion and doesn’t listen...
Not experienced and limited testing available although Kaiser says they offer those services. She [Dr. Fong] makes diagnosis without the full picture because they don’t want to do/order more labs. Infertility needs a clear picture and honest analysis to make a decision if it’s wise financially to continue...Limited contact [with nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente SoCal]. Always directed the doctor would be returning message.
How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Consultation was over phone. After labs kept same optimistic despite saying they were abnormal. Very little communication. Was seen by her one time and the rest a different doctor. She didn’t monitor or follow up after 2 ultrasounds clearly showed her minimal stimulation wasn’t working. Both ultrasounds done by different doctor to be told eggs stalled cancelling cycle 5 days before Christmas. No compassion just call back next period. Devastated from DOR diagnosis that was incorrect! Gave up for 2 years.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Get a second opinion from an actual Fertility Specialist with good reviews.

Dr. Fong believed my would respond the same to stimulation for IVF as I had for IUI. I do feel like she was honest and presented my situation clearly...saw an improvement in response to my IUI protocol and improvement in my AMH, she suggested I take advantage of the window and see if IVF would give me a better outcome...did all she could do since Kaiser Fontana does not offer IVF.
Kaiser Fontana is great if you don’t have a difficult case. They can offer medicated cycles with IUIs but do not offer IVF...[nurses] remembered me and my husband every time they saw us...When I called the nurse’s line they always answered or called back in a timely manner...answered my questions and would follow up with Dr. Fong if they didn’t have the answers to my questions.
How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Dr. Fong was very honest with me from the beginning. I knew going I to treatment that my diagnosis would make successful treatment difficult but not impossible. She presented my options and listed to my concerns, and when I asked she gave me her honest professional opinion. Dr. Fong was available and communicated with me directly and with her staff. Whenever I emailed or called I would get a response on the same day or early the next depending on when I emailed or called. I do think that she is very optimistic and perhaps this may make moving to IVF instead of IUI more difficult because she believes in her patients’ potential. In my case o do believe I should have moved on to IVF sooner, however my AMH was very low for my age and Dr. Fong believed my would respond the same to stimulation for IVF as I had for IUI. I do feel like she was honest and presented my situation clearly. Once I saw an improvement in response to my IUI protocol and improvement in my AMH, she suggested I take advantage of the window and see if IVF would give me a better outcome. I believe because of my diagnosis she did all she could do since Kaiser Fontana does not offer IVF.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Ask questions, ask if you should move on to other treatments and why she believes that. Overall I had a positive experience even if I didn’t get the outcome I wanted.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Dr. Fong was very kind and always available to discuss any concerns I had. She has a warm disposition and remembers her patients. She’s very optimistic, but gives you a clear picture of your situation.
Describe the protocols Shirley Fong used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente SoCal and their degree of success.
We had 4 IUI's (2019-2020) with Kaiser Fontana, Dr. Fong. I diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve, AMH 10/2018 .74; AMH 10/2019 1.55. 1st IUI 3/2019, 6 Vials (450 IU) Menopur for 6 days and had 2 follicles (16 / 13) developed, resulted in pregnancy. Pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 11/12 weeks with Manual Vacuum Aspiration, fetal pole measured 5 weeks 6 days. 2nd IUI 8/2019, 6 vials (450 IU) Menopur for 8 days and had 3 follicles develop, resulted in biochemical pregnancy. 3rd IUI 12/2019, 6 vials (450 IU) Menopur for 7 days and 3 vials (225 IU) for the 8th day, had 4 mature follicles with 2 smaller ones. No pregnancy, had to cancel next IUI for January 2020 due to left over cyst from IUI. 4th IUI 2/2020, 5 Vials (375 IU) Menopur for 8 days, 4 mature follicles with several smaller ones. No pregnancy, had to cancel next IUI for February 2020 due to left over cysts from IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
The nursing staff was great. They remembered me and my husband every time they saw us. They always explained the next step that our Dr. had given us. When I called the nurse’s line they always answered or called back in a timely manner. They answered my questions and would follow up with Dr. Fong if they didn’t have the answers to my questions.
Describe your experience with Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
Kaiser Fontana is great if you don’t have a difficult case. They can offer medicated cycles with IUIs but do not offer IVF. I had a friend refer me, she had a successful IUI (same sex couple) but did not have the medical needs I have.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
My cost was minimal, my insurance covered most of it. Offices visits $10 each Medication $70 approximately each cycle IUI procedure$10 Labs $0

The first few sessions she provides a lot of information and suggestions for your fertility treatment. She talks fast because she is trying to give you alot of information in a short period of time, but initially you do feel like she is treating you like a human being. However, once she creates a treatment plan and you try to ask more detailed questions via email or through her staff, she provides very limited vague responses
The consultations and limited diagnostic tests can be very informative when you are starting out on this journey. Yet, if it is determined that you have multiple fertility issues, it is better to go to a clinic that offers a variety of services, as this clinic [Kaiser - Fontanta] offers very little services.... After the two week wait, when you call to tell them that you are NOT pregnant , they literally say, "Okay, call us with your next period." This response can be very shocking to a person who is devastated that she is not pregnant.
How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Even when she diagnoses you with multiple fertility issues, and you present her with the research saying that IUI is a waste of time and money and could cause additional problems like ectopic pregnancy and miscarriages, she will not directly say try other options. She will just say keep trying IUI, when you know, she knows better.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
If you try fertility treatments with her and your gut keeps telling you that you need a second opinion, get a second opinion. Her energy and optimism can make you feel as though anything is possible, even when the facts about your fertility is so blatantly clear that you need more services than she can offer.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
The first few sessions she provides a lot of information and suggestions for your fertility treatment. However, once she creates a treatment plan and you try to ask more detailed questions via email or through her staff, she provides very limited vague responses (sometimes only phrases) and does not directly answer your questions, leaving you even more confused about what next steps to take in your treatment.
Describe the protocols Shirley Fong used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente SoCal and their degree of success.
With the IUI that I did, she prescribed about 50 mg of clomid as she did not want me to produce to many eggs and accidently fertilize too many eggs. She also prescribed a trigger shot that I took one or two days before my insemination. I did not get pregnant. Yet as mentioned before, she was being hopefully and not considering all the fertility issues I was presenting with.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
After the two week wait, when you call to tell them that you are NOT pregnant , they literally say, "Okay, call us with your next period." This response can be very shocking to a person who is devastated that she is not pregnant. After paying hundreds of dollars to try to get pregnant with this department, all they can say is "call back with your next period." The doctor does not schedule an appointment to reassess your treatment plan and determine if it needs to be changed. You are just told to do the whole process again (if you choose) when your next period rolls around.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
Consultations, HSGs, bloodwork, and the actual insemination procedure all cost close to $2500 for one cycle.
Describe Shirley Fong's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
In this clinic, she does not deal with embryos

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
Even when you directly told them that you were concerned about your multiple fertility issues, the doctor continued to encourage their service, even when you needed more advanced services.

I loved Dr. Fong for her personality and relatability. She had a very calm aura and explained everything in a personable manner. I felt comfortable and trusted that I was in great hands with such a fragile experience... Dr. Fong was very relatable and listed to everything my partner and I had to say or ask, and in turn answered everything in a way we could understand but still very professionally. She went over options while keeping in mind our budget and how aggressive we could be with that monetary goal in mind.
The nursing staff [at Kaiser Fontana] was nice but did not have as much communication skills as the doctor. They did however go over the doctors notes to make sure I understood everything and let me know what to do for the next follow up appointment.... I love kaiser and wish I could keep them forever. Being as they are pricey and do not offer fertility to an outside buyer is the biggest downfall.

To a prospective patient, I would say there’s no reason to be scared or nervous with Dr. Fong. She is the type that actually cares about you and listens and wants to give you the best treatment possible for the outcome you want.

The initial consultation for me was $150.00. Without insurance it would have been $300.00. I think their pricing is normal as far as other clinics I have looked into. The quality of the doctor and having 50% covered was a big thing for me at the time

Dr Fong, is attentive and listened to my concerns the whole time. I never felt like she was rushing me or dismissed my concerns! She was empathetic and informative of my possible solutions. Whenever I email she immediately responds, and is very easy to get a hold of. I can’t say enough great things about her!... She presented options to me, and gave me information about next steps. Precious fertility doctor was dismissive of my concerns brought forth, but Dr Fong listened to all them and acknowledged them.
Prompt on appointments, not a long wait time. Very clean as well. Nursing staff is kind, and answers any questions you may have. It can be a tad confusing on which building because Kaiser is so large, however they send out email, mail appointment reminders prior to the appointment. The kaiser app is also very helpful... With my first fertility doctor, not Dr Fong, my previous Dr read the wrong results. He told me I had no eggs left and the only way to get pregnant would be to use donor eggs. Then he made a comment about my age, to which I immediately corrected that I was younger than he stated. He looked at his chart, asked me my appointment time and apologized that he read the wrong results. He then pulled up my file and read my results. It was traumatizing and soon after I switched doctors and found Dr Fong

Dr. Fong made my husband and I feel like we weren’t just another patient that goes through the office. On our first meeting we came out feeling like there was hope and unfortunately it hasn’t gone our way but Dr.Fong makes me feel in a never give up way when I see her.... She never sugar coated what I had she was very clear from day 1and I thank her for that. When I have a canceled treatment because my body wasn’t ready there was never any sense of that’s it let’s move on.
The clinic [Kaiser- Fontana] is very good they are usually very fast and really work hard to work with you. They are located next to the offices where the pregnant patients go to so it is a bit hard when your their to try to make a baby and right next to it is just a swarm of pregnant women. Other than that it is a great clinic.... They worked hard to work around you and make you feel as comfortable as they can make it. All were great.
How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Dr. Fong and her staff have made me feel like there not just there because it’s their job. They do this because they wanna help. Since the first meeting to every appointment and treatment I’ve had since Dr. Fong has answered all my questions with compassion and certainty. She never sugar coated what I had she was very clear from day 1and I thank her for that. When I have a canceled treatment because my body wasn’t ready there was never any sense of that’s it let’s move on. Instead she made me feel like this time it didn’t happen but we’re not giving up, she then would proceed with what can we do better. Dr. Fong has been a great Doctor since day one of meeting her.

Dr. Fong has a very soft bedside manner and seems to care, but at times it is difficult to make sure you see her at all appointments. Dr. Fong is not always available. During one cycle, neither Dr. was available and patients were told to wait until next cycle.... I had an IUI done and it was negative. Next IUI, medication was increased and my cycle had to be cancelled because I had too many follicles that were going to be released. I felt this cycle was poorly monitored
The nursing staff in the front office seem to have some sympathy and seem to care. They do try and return your call or email asap.... at Kaiser, as patients, we do not always get to see our doctors. Sometimes we are seen by another Dr. or RN, this makes me feel a little less important because I feel, I am not getting the care I deserve from one individual and there might be some miscommunication at times when there are a few people involved in my care.

I am currently still under treatment. I was suggested 3 medicated cycles with injections. First cycle was using Menopur and dosages were increased for almost 12 days. I had an IUI done and it was negative. Next IUI, medication was increased and my cycle had to be cancelled because I had too many follicles that were going to be released. I felt this cycle was poorly monitored and there was no communication from my Dr.When I when in for the ultrasound, the RN suggested I cancel and asked why my Dr. did not bring me in earlier, it was a holiday.

Dr. Fong always took the time to answer my questions in a clear, concise, and honest way...many REI clinics are out for money and prey on patients ignorance. I never felt that way with Dr.Fong...full fertility work up, which led to my DOR diagnosis...small male factor issues. We did 3 IUIs.
The Kaiser REI clinic is great...had an issue with an incorrect/error in appointment time, this was fixed immediately...it’s so difficult to schedule the cycle monitoring around work/life, they were always accommodating...double booked me so I could receive my treatment and not have to call off work...nurses were always so friendly and helpful.
How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
I work in the medical field, but reproductive endocrinology/infertility is a whole other world, I was not familiar with. Dr. Fong always took the time to answer my questions in a clear, concise, and honest way. I have learned in this specialty, honesty and trust go a long way, so many REI clinics are out for money and prey on patients ignorance. I never felt that way with Dr.Fong. I had full fertility work up, which led to my DOR diagnosis and a few small male factor issues. We did 3 IUIs. Although my outcome was unsuccessful, I do not regret having my treatments with Dr. Fong.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
I appreciate Dr.Fong’s communication, she delivers sensitive information with compassion, while remaining realistic about expected outcomes.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
The nursing staff was always friendly and helpful.
Describe your experience with Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
The Kaiser REI clinic is great. I once had an issue with an incorrect/error in appointment time, this was fixed immediately, as time is everything with IUI. Also, it’s so difficult to schedule the cycle monitoring around work/life, they were always accommodating, one time, Dr. Murrain (works with Dr.Fong) double booked me so I could receive my treatment and not have to call off work. The nurses were always so friendly and helpful.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
Very affordable, but most of my care was covered by my Kaiser insurance, costly fertility meds, oral and injections only cost $10-$20 with my copay.

How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
We had an infertility workup under Dr. Fongs' care that called for Hysterosalpingography (HSG). Per protocol, a pregnancy test was performed one day prior as pregnancy is a contraindication for this procedure. Rather than informing us and halting the procedure, they proceeded with the HSG performed by Dr. Kenneth Wong. The day after the HSG, we got a call to inform us that my wife was pregnant and they asked her to come in for an ultrasound. It turned out she was 6 weeks pregnant but there was no fetal cardiac activity. I believe the HSG harmed the 6 week fetus but that's neither here nor their.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Ask her to quadruple check if you are pregnant before performing an invasive procedure like an HSG. Ask her to ensure proper communication amongst her team.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
All different nurses. No one communicated to us the positive pregnany test until after the HSG was performed.

Dr. Fong is very caring. She explained everything to my husband and I. She is very optimistic and her positivity really made me think that everything would work out...She prescribed too much menopur. With all that she prescribed we used a lot of my Infertility pharmacy coverage. It was about 10 boxes and I Only used one box...I am now stuck paying for a lot of the meds out of pocket.
The Fontana clinic [Kaiser Permanente SoCal] doesn’t have a welcoming setting but don’t let that discourage you from continuing the staff makes up for it...[nurse] was emailing constantly and keeping in the loop and when I got OHSS she called me everyday to check up on me. And that was so heartwarming and I appreciate her for that...[Dr. Fong] prescribed too much menopur...It was about 10 boxes and I Only used one box.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I was nervous to meet with her at first, but she [Dr. Fong] put my husband and I at ease with a course of action based on how aggressive we wanted to be. She answered questions and emails quickly and we always felt better after leaving her office. We are still in the early stages of her helping us get and stay pregnant, but I’m optimistic she will be able to help.... I am a recurrent pregnancy loss patient so I had to have multiple tests to see what was going on. So far everything has come back normal so we have unexplained infertility at this point.
Kaiser is great, in that you can get answers quicker because all the doctors work under kaiser instead of an outside facility. It does take a long time to get your first appointment though. It’s about an 8 week wait.... when I call and speak to her nurse, she seems almost annoyed on the phone. But whenever I’m in the office, the nurses are great. Not sure if it’s someone outside the department that is answering the phones, but she isn’t the most pleasant. Nothing outrageous, just not super friendly.

She [Dr. Fong] listens and makes you feel like you matter. ... I didn’t get to see her much because she works primarily down in LA. But when I did see her she was always nice and very pleasant ... I felt comfortable with her. ... She showed compassion and sympathy ... She tried iui ... Make the appointment way in advance she is always booked ... I would definitely recommend Kamala she was a great NP [Kaiser Permanente].
It was the day of the Iui my np was not in and she rescheduled me with another np. The np said she would see me the next day by the time she saw me she said i should have seen her yesterday. I explained that they cancelled my appointment and rescheduled me for next day. She cancelled my Iui cycle. It was stressful. I post $3k that cycle ... The staff [Kaiser Permanente] was nice. Location was centrally located. I would definitely recommend Kamala she was a great NP.

Dr. Fong was always very kind and warm. She knew our story and I didn’t have to re-explain everything at each appointment...I also felt like after 4 failed IUIs that more information should have been provided in terms of next steps. My treatment plan was rarely adjusted - it felt like the doctors were just hoping one IUI would stick..
The biggest issue with this [Kaiser Permanente SoCal] clinic is that the infertility patients share the same waiting room as the OBGYN patients. Talk about insensitive! Why they would put the women who can’t get pregnant with the women that can is beyond me. Many times I walked by rooms where women were listening to their unborn baby’s heartbeat. I left this clinic in tears after each appointment.
How was your experience with Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Dr. Fong is very thorough in her explanations of what the treatment plan is, testing, etc at the beginning. However, I would see her maybe once a month and the other times I would see Dr. Wong or Dr. Huang which was frustrating. I also felt like after 4 failed IUIs that more information should have been provided in terms of next steps. My treatment plan was rarely adjusted - it felt like the doctors were just hoping one IUI would stick. When asked if we should do IVF, I was not given any information for yes or no. Ultimately my husband and I decided we were getting nowhere with any of the doctors at this office.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shirley Fong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Be prepared with questions and do your research. You will often feel like a number at this clinic but Dr. Fong is truly a sweet doctor who will show much compassion for your situation.

We did Clomid for about 6 months before my husband was able to get to his doctor where we learned the issue was with him. We then regrouped and came back a few months later with the plan to do an IUI with donor sperm. I continued with Clomid and then had injectables. We had four failed IUIs with no discussion of what was happening.

The nursing staff was awesome! Only a few times were they rude and those were the nurses I had when I had appointments on the weekends.
