I appreciate that Dr. Trout is willing to use medications and hormones to treat male factor infertility. However, she was overly optimistic about our chances with both IUI and IVF. She did not call us when our egg retrieval failed to yield any embryos...Dr. Trout was guided more by my FSH, which was high, than by my AMH, which was really promising. As a result she started me on very high doses (450) of Gonal-F. I wound up with a very low maturity rate- 12 eggs retrieved but only 6 mature...
our IVF coordinator [at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] did not always communicate in a timely manner...While I was usually able to get a call back and received good medication instructions, she [nurse] did not stay in touch while I was waiting to hear if I had any embryos, and did not call to tell me that I didn't...their procedure room was really uncomfortable, and I remember a strange staff member coming through while I was preparing for my egg retrieval...

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Be very wary of seeing her for IVF, as she does not use the most up-to-date methods.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Dr. Trout is compassionate, and was willing to meet us where we were at the time. However, our IVF coordinator did not always communicate in a timely manner.

While I was usually able to get a call back and received good medication instructions, she did not stay in touch while I was waiting to hear if I had any embryos, and did not call to tell me that I didn't (indications on day 3 were not good, but she didn't say that I was totally out of the game).
Describe your experience with Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
At the time I was there at least, the embryologist was very old-school and did not routinely perform ICSI. To be fair, he did get us a good fertilization rate (5 out of 6. Also- and this is really disturbing- their genetic testing was performed by day 3 biopsy! This is a really out-of-date technique that has a higher risk of damaging the embryo as well as being less accurate.
Another issue with the clinic is that their procedure room was really uncomfortable, and I remember a strange staff member coming through while I was preparing for my egg retrieval.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
I believe that the charge for retrieval and one transfer was about $13,500, but I received a discount as a Kaiser patient that made it more like $10K. Plus meds and testing, of course, so more like $20K altogether.

Dr. Trout performed two IUIs without scheduling an HSG, which would have been prudent.
Infertility is confusing, isolating and a general emotional rollercoaster. Dr. Trout would just stare at me while I cried in front of her when my IUI's failed, when my ultrasounds didn't look right, etc. She didn't once offer any consolation or words of encouragement. She quite literally just watched me break down and didn't say anything...She did some preliminary testing before my IUI treatment started which seemed normal at the time. When I switched over to CCRM, they ran me through a minimum of 100 more tests to rule out any abnormalities. I didn't know what type of questions to ask before
I was also scheduled for an IUI one day for 9am [at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] and they tell you to come in 30 minutes early so your partner can deposit sperm. When we arrived, there were 4 other couples in there before us and apparently only one nurse working that day. We sat in the waiting room for an hour and 45 minutes. Our largest concern was that we were told sperm needs to be injected in my 30 minutes after leaving his body, and it was very clearly over that time mark. On

I think an empathetic bedside manner is appropriate for most doctors - but it is especially the case for endocrinology. Dr. Trout treats her patients as if she is selling them a used lawn mower. What you are purchasing from her doesn't seem like it's important, she doesn't care to get in depth about the mechanics. She did some preliminary testing before my IUI treatment started which seemed normal at the time. When I switched over to CCRM, they ran me through a minimum of 100 more tests to rule out any abnormalities. I didn't know what type of questions to ask before the IUI or what questions to ask when I found out all three didn't work. She didn't offer up explanations, didn't provide clarity on why things weren't working. She made an isolating experience feel that much more isolating.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Don't go to this clinic. I thought that the treatment and level of empathy I received here was par for the course, and when I switched to CCRM I looked back completely mortified that I subjected myself to their emotional abuse. It was such a dark time that their entire staff made darker.

Clomid before each IUI, which is an easy oral medication.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
The woman who runs the front staff is so incredibly rude, and she also happens to be the office manager. I remember my first visit I couldn't find my insurance card and she kept staring and me and asking me every 10 seconds if I found it. A different patient walked in at the same time who appeared to have a disability and her tone completely changed with this other patient where she was instantaneously sweet and mild-mannered. I was also scheduled for an IUI one day for 9am and they tell you to come in 30 minutes early so your partner can deposit sperm. Once they finally took us back, the nurse didn't apologize for the time we waited, didn't tell us the sperm was still usable. Once they complete the IUI, you have to lay for 10 minutes with your butt elevated on the table. Once the 10 minutes were up, the nurse came in and lowered the table without saying a word to me or my husband and just walked out of the room. A different time, I had to go in to get my blood drawn and the nurse was so distracted talking about her pets and her upcoming vacation that she had to re-stab me 3 times. At one point she said "oh well something is weird because no blood is coming out". On a different day, a nurse asked me to wait in a consultation room so a nurse could come talk to me and I saw three spiders run across the floor - which helps paint a further picture of their cleanliness standards. My acupuncturist told me she had a patient who saw Dr. Trout who needed acupuncture before IUI, and there were no spaces at the office to accommodate this need so Dr. Trout's staff suggested the patient just lie on a conference table. At CCRM, they recognize that this is a need that some patients have (stimulating blood flow before a procedure like IUI) and have created spaces to make their patients more comfortable.

Their staff makes you feel stupid for asking questions, they make you feel like you're inconveniencing them. The clinic itself is not well maintained, there was always garbage on the floor and the chairs never felt clean. I once had a completely random employee of theirs come into my room when my legs were up in stirrups without a doctor present so she could get a tool out of the table I was on because she forgot it. Not a single person here has bedside manner or makes you feel like you're going to be taken care of. After I switched providers, I called to ask why Dr. Trout put me on a generic version of medication when my insurance required a different kind and their nurses implied that my insurance was stupid and that my new endocrinologist office was not doing their job. I cannot think of a single positive thing to say about this practice. Not even that they had a good magazine selection in the lobby... because they didn't.

Dr Trout and her nurses weren't aligned on statistics. We were told IUI was 60% effective from one person, and 20% effective from another. We had to ask multiple times to get our information sent over to our new endocrinologist's office.
I kind of felt like I was left on my own with Dr. Trout...lacked a lot of personalized bedside manner. All of my interactions made me feel hopeless in this process. I never once received optimism from her, whereas my second doctor told me based on my age, workup, etc. they expect a 60-70% success rate. Dr. Trout made me feel old (at 33y) and that my chances of conceiving were slim to none...
Mellinda [nurse at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] was very helpful, but all of the information she gave me during my consults was contradictory to what Dr. Trout told me. Where Mellinda would restore my optimism, Dr. Trout would remove it. I also felt like sometimes she was a bit disorganized or had not read my notes very thoroughly before meeting with me...I felt like communicating with the whole team created extra emotional turmoil for me. Nothing felt like it was very thoroughly explained either.

I don't think this is the doctor you want to see when you are going through the emotional rollercoaster of infertility. I did feel like she was receptive to my questions and willing to do things she did not initially recommend (HSG - my tube was blocked, but she had told me this was not a necessary procedure). I felt like I had very little information coming from her that wasn't framed just as a statistic. My new clinic has taken a much more proactive and thorough process to get me ready for IVF. I kind of felt like I was left on my own with Dr. Trout and Dr. Google is never a friend during times like these.

The information provided to me by the nurses was always a much more optimistic picture than the information I got directly from Dr. Trout. I felt like communicating with the whole team created extra emotional turmoil for me. Nothing felt like it was very thoroughly explained either.
After our failed FET, I never heard another word from Dr. Trout. The nurse called to say we were not pregnant and Dr. Trout never followed up...We still have one embryo left that did not pass PGS testing but for some reason Dr. Trout said it could be from lab error. She could never give us a straight answer as to why she would think it might be lab error and what would happen if we transferred it and it wasn't lab error and resulted in a pregnancy. This obviously left us feeling very uneasy about moving forward. We hoped to discuss this and have a more detailed discussion about the failed FET with the doctor however I never heard from the clinic again. She never once called to follow up - which I found absolutely shocking. I've waited months to write this review thinking she would eventually give me a call. I was disappointed and felt like we had just wasted 2 years with this clinic.
This clinic [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] uses out of date technology and different testing than most of the other clinics I've heard of - which makes it difficult to compare test results. The waiting room is straight out of the 80s and the technology is right there with it. With all of the advances in fertility over the last 20 years I would have liked to see the office be at least somewhat reflective of a modern day facility...The office staff and Dr. Trout herself are both very short when you ask questions. After our failed FET, I never heard another word from Dr. Trout. The nurse called to say we were not pregnant and Dr. Trout never followed up.
How was your experience with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
We worked with Dr. Trout for around 2 years - 2 failed IUI's and 1 failed FET. During the two years we probably saw Dr. Trout a total of 5 times. Dr. Trout's bedside manner is a little odd, but it was nothing I couldn't deal with in most cases. However, after she did the FET she made a joke about having a glass of wine if my pregnancy test was negative the following week. After everything we had just gone through, having a glass of wine was literally the last thing on my mind and it felt dismissive and belittling. We went in the following week and sadly the test was negative. The nurse called to share the news. We still have one embryo left that did not pass PGS testing but for some reason Dr. Trout said it could be from lab error. She could never give us a straight answer as to why she would think it might be lab error and what would happen if we transferred it and it wasn't lab error and resulted in a pregnancy. My insurance did not provide any coverage. It was roughly $7000 for 3 rounds of IUI using oral meds then injectables with frequent ultrasounds and bloodwork.
my test results had come back that I had PCOS. She [Dr. Susan Trout] looked me in the eyes and told me that I would never conceive naturally. Regardless of having no problems with my eggs, my tubes or my reproductive organs she said that a natural conception would never be possible for me...she put me on metformin right away. The dosage and medicine itself made me sick almost immediately and left me with very little appetite. We did 3 IUIs and she prescribed me 2.5 mg of Femara each time. Each time, the IUI failed and I never had follicles that reached the optimal size. One of the IUI rounds that we did I was required to take a large amount of Femara at the last minute to try and produce ovulation and it still didn't make my follicles big enough. Very little was explained to me about what the next steps were or would be moving on from there.
I worked with two of the nurses there [at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] - Melinda and Mallory. Melinda was a little rude here and there on the phone, but overall she was kind. Mallory was the nurse I primarily dealt with and she was kind, but there still were moments when I would cry because of bad news and she didn't know how to act...Communication was pretty poor overall. They would say they would call me back and then I just wouldn't hear from them and I had to call them back the following day. We had a few instances where our prescriptions didn't get put in on time and we had to wait until the following day.
How was your experience with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
In the entire year and 3 IUI treatments that we had done at Susan Trout's office we only had 3 visits directly with her. My experiences were not pleasant and her level of compassion was almost non-existent. After having met with another doctor, I am also confused by her treatment methods. Despite having very few follicles reach optimal size, she continued to keep me on the same dosage of femara every single IUI. When I spoke to my new doctor about the 2.5 mg that she had me on, the new doctor said they usually average 5 to 10 mg of that medicine for IUI treatments. Overall, it felt like Susan Trout was just out to make a buck. Due to the failed IUIs we had with them, IVF was close down the line and my new clinic says that isn't even something I need to start thinking about at all right now.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Find another doctor to visit. Trust is not something I left with after the year and 3 treatments we did. If you decide to see Susan Trout, do so with caution and do your research. I wish I had read all the reviews on this doctor and clinic before I wasted an entire year with her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
During every visit that I had directly with Susan Trout I felt like a number more than a person. The first time my husband and I met with her she was telling me I probably had PCOS, even though no tests had been completed, and she had a nervous laughter. So anytime she would say something she laughed - which in this setting it just didn't seem right. The next time I met with her was her telling me my test results had come back that I had PCOS. She looked me in the eyes and told me that I would never conceive naturally. Regardless of having no problems with my eggs, my tubes or my reproductive organs she said that a natural conception would never be possible for me. After hearing from another doctor now, I know this is completely absurd. My last and final 1x1 contact with Susan Trout was during our final IUI procedure that we did at their clinic. She completed my ultrasound and when on about how many eggs I had and I asked her what happened to them if they did not mature and become a baby...she looked at me and said "they die". Overall, the bedside manner is terrible.

The location is convenient and overall the staff were fine. Some of the front desk ladies were a little rude and we did have a few rude interactions with the office manager. It was easy to find though and always clean.
When we moved to a new doctor, getting our paperwork from them was actually impossible. They told us if we wanted our records we had to pay a fee and that it would take 5-7 days for the doctor to approve the request (after we had already waited 7 days because the doctor was on vacation). Ultimately, I ended up printing all of my records off of their online portal instead of waiting for them to fax them to the new doctor.

Each IUI was $450 and our clinic visits were $60. Our insurance doens't cover fertility treatments and it was only after we started seeing another doctor that we found out that Susan Trout and her clinic were not filling the claims as "fertility" related so that's why our insurance was paying for them.

In the beginning of treatment with Dr. Trout, she ran labs to check essentially everything. We knew I already had PCOS and based on bloodwork, she increased my metformin. After my bloodwork improved and stayed consistent, I ended up becoming pregnant naturally. It ended in miscarriage. The miscarriage brought about two emergency surgeries and a diagnosis of severe endometriosis. Unfortunately, I live in Wyoming and Dr. Trout is in Colorado so the emergency surgeries were done in Wyoming. Dr. Trout quickly requested all files from the surgeries and all my aftercare was done with her. I needed a third surgery to get the endometriosis out and fix my arcuate uterus so Dr. Trout did those surgeries. After healing from that, I had several cysts on my ovaries. So, we started with 2 weeks of OCP's to see if they went away. They did not. I ended up doing 4 more weeks of OCP's and the cysts were gone. I started on Femara 2.5mg and had no follicle growth so right away did another 5 days of Femara 5mg. The next time around I did Femara 5mg and Ovidrel, it did not work. The third round, I did Femara 7.5mg and had multiple mature follicles and did IUI, it did not work. The plan is to do one or two more IUI and if both fail, it will be time to move onto IVF.
Every time I call Dr. Trouts office [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology], I am able to talk to someone quicker than any other doctor I have seen. Dr. Trout and her staff are incredible. I drive 4 hours to see them for appointments. They always remember that I'm coming a long distance and have been flexible with appointment times. They always remember without me having to remind them that my husband works out of town. They have scheduled appointments around his schedule and are so accommodating. From the receptionist to the US tech to the lab, each person remembers little things about me and my husbands name even when he's not with me- they ask how he's doing. They've sat with me for a long time after giving me bad news helping me deal with it. After a traumatic few months, the nurse called to check on me and they never shame or make me feel bad for calling frequently with small and/or silly questions.

When I decided that I was going to see Dr. Trout, I called the office to get information. The first time I called, they set up a free phone consult with Dr. Trout. They gave me a date and time to call and I would be able to speak to Dr. Trout and see if I felt moving forward with her was a good idea. When I called for the phone appointment, I waited less than 30 seconds before she was on the line. I introduced myself to her and she did the same. She told me what she does, how long she's been doing it. I told her a bit about my background and asked her opinion on if she thought pregnancy would be possible for me. She, of course, would need a full work-up on me and to go over my medical history, but she gave me SO much hope during our phone call. Several other doctors had told me previously that I would probably never be able to have kids. She didn't make me feel like that AT ALL. She was so kind and compassionate towards me. I am a higher weight than I would like to be and have been shamed by many doctors. I told her my height and weight, she hardly even commented on it and said she has full faith that I will be a mother one day. She explained thoroughly the process. I decided to move forward with her. I made an appointment and my husband and I drove to her office a few weeks later. I live four hours away from her office and she was really accommodating to that. At my first appointment, I was instructed to bring all my medical history and anything prevalent or what I thought she would need to know. When we got there, we were called back right on schedule. We met in her office and went over absolutely everything in great detail. She answered all our questions in a way we could understand. She was very upfront and honest about what was good and what was not. Even when something was negative, she was able to present in a positive way that didn't make either my husband or myself feel hopeless. I appreciate a doctor who tells me like it is and if there was things we/I needed to fix and/or change, she told us. But, she never talked down to us or made us feel bad. Not long after my first appointment with her and a change in some meds, I naturally conceived. It ended in miscarriage and she was incredible to me. I ended up needing extensive surgeries after the miscarriage from newfound complications and she took great care of me and my husband.

Gather all the medical history that you want her to have and bring it with you. Dr. Trouts office will reach out to other offices and request history, but she was more than willing to go over everything with us and having it yourself eliminates having to wait for other doctors to follow through and send her office things.

After a traumatic few months, the nurse called to check on me and they never shame or make me feel bad for calling frequently with small and/or silly questions.
Describe the protocols Susan Trout (retired) used in your cycles at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed) and their degree of success.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed). (Assigned nurse: Melissa and Malory )
I have called and spent a significant amount of time talking on the phone to both Malory and Melissa. They are always compassionate to the situations. When all the rounds of treatment I have done failed, they genuinely talk to me on the phone about it and give me hope and positive messages to not give up. I have had to go to the office for labs and to pick things up and they remember who I am just walking down the hallway. When quite a bit of time has gone by since I've talked to them, they always remember me and my story right away. They remember the small things which means they really listen to their patients. I love them.
Describe your experience with Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
I love that when I call the office, I always get to talk to someone. I never feel rushed on the phone. They greet me on the phone like I'm one of their friends/family and that I'm important. They are always polite. Sometimes, the office manager answers the phone rather than a receptionist and she is always just as nice. She works closely with patients insurance and does the billing for the office and is accommodating and respectful to the fact that infertility is extremely expensive.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
My insurance does not cover any fertility treatments themselves but they do cover ultrasounds due to PCOS, so I am lucky enough to only have a copay for the ultrasounds which is $50. The IUIs are not covered and cost $450. The Ovidrel and Femara, they sent me to a pharmacy that sells fertility meds at cheaper costs so the Ovidrel was $100 and the Femara was less than $10.
Describe Susan Trout (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
As I have only done IUI with Dr. Trout, we have not discussed in great detail what her approach is to single vs. multiple embryo transfers.
I have been a patient of Dr. Trout's for a year for infertility, but have not started interventions yet. My husband and I first scheduled an appointment with her after we hid the one-year mark of trying without success. Then, I got pregnant and miscarried early. We went back and Dr. Trout did some tests and diagnosed me with PCOS. She suggested medicated IUI. We were saving up for that when I got pregnant again. This time it was an ectopic pregnancy and I lost my right tube. We are going to pursue IVF next.
The office manager, who handles billing [at CO Reproductive Endo], is a bad communicator and seems incredibly disorganized. For example, she informed us that our insurance would not cover a semen analysis, so we paid out of pocket because that was our 'cheaper option'. So we were surprised to get an EOB from our insurance for it that showed that they covered the cost! I think it was an honest error, and they were quick to refund us, but it was a hassle that could have been avoided with more attention to detail. It didn't give us much faith in her interpretation of our insurance coverage. So, if you use this clinic, verify everything the clinic says with your insurance directly!

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
She can talk around direct questions, so if you really want an answer on a specific question, be very direct.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Dr. Trout is not exactly warm, but she does make you feel confident in her assessments. She takes the time to talk with you in-person and I know she personally reads the messages I've sent to the clinic.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
It's hit or miss. There is one nurse who is absolutely amazing. She's smart, direct and specific with her instructions. She answers questions thoroughly and doesn't rush you off the phone.
However, there is another nurse who I had to ask not to work with any longer. She was abrupt and rude when I was telling her I had an ectopic pregnancy because I hadn't informed them sooner (um, sorry, i was having emergency surgery).

Consultations were around $200
Genetic tests were in the thousands, but our insurance covered them. Dr. Trout said they would be "a few hundred" but when we got our EOB, they were almost $10,000 for two of us.

She was very patient with us and answered our many questions with an appropriate level of detail. My wife and I got the sense that Dr Trout genuinely likes reproductive endocrinology, but just as importantly, enjoys helping people through their journey. Although Dr Trout did not personally administer the tests or procedures that we explored, we felt that she always had time for us whenever we needed counsel or information.
I (the husband) would call [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] with questions, or to schedule an appointment, and the nurse wouldn't call me back. The nurse would, instead, call and leave a message with my wife, who was unable to take the call while at work. This resulted in a few delays....The younger staff lacked a certain professionalism, which is to be expected, but most of the staff seemed to be like-minded with Dr Trout.

Our first visit with Dr Trout was about one year from our first attempts to concieve naturally. We had a LOT of questions, since we were relatively new to this process. I would advise anyone seeing Dr Trout to be an information sponge. Get informed. Do a little research on your own, come with questions, and be prepared for answers. Along these lines, I would advise new patients of Dr Trout what a reasonable test/procedure schedule might be for your circumstances, as well as the costs involved, possible side effects, and chances of success for those procedures.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Dr Trout demonstrated thorough medical knowledge, yet also showed plenty of relational empathy from her own journey. She ackowledged our feelings, and the difficulty of the process we're going through.
Describe the protocols Susan Trout (retired) used in your cycles at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed) and their degree of success.
Dr Trout seemed to encourage a minimalist strategy; starting with scheduled intercourse, then adding in the next least invasive assistance each cycle. My wife and I made some of our own adjustments as needed, but our treatment planhas been incrementally more aggressive each cycle: 1) scheduled intercourse, 2) unmedicated IUI, 3) Clomid and scheduled intercourse, 4) Clomid, Ovidrel, and IUI, 5) currently planning another Clomid and scheduled intercourse cycle, followed by 6) injectables and IUI, and 7) possible IVF after that.

Most of the cursing staff treated us like actual people, and not like nameless "cases." The younger staff lacked a certain professionalism, which is to be expected, but most of the staff seemed to be like-minded with Dr Trout.
Describe your experience with Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
Dr Trout isn't the most hand-on with procedures, nor the most aggressive with treatment plans. If you're expecting a "one and done" clinic, this isn't the place. This is not to say that her methods aren't effective, it more a matter of her personal approach to the process.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
Our costs were slightly less than what we expected. Each IUI was between $400-$500, Ovidrel was much cheaper than expected at $110/per, and other tests were exactly as expected.

Dr. Trout is good at explaining things and answering all our questions in a way that is easy to understand. She's also candid about tests and procedures that are unnecessary, which we really appreciate since we're self-pay (she didn't order a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't going to help). She is direct and kind at the same time, and I feel like she understands not just the biology but also the emotional toll....
Since we have unexplained infertility, we started with Clomid IUIs, which seems to be fairly standard.
The clinic [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] is relatively small, so we meet the same staff over and over.... which makes it feel personal, and they still do weekend appointments as needed. We haven't seen Dr. Trout herself much; the vast majority of our interactions are with the nurses (and on the weekend, the nurses aren't there, just the techs).... We've worked with two nurses. They went over test results and treatment plans in person. They are really great at answering questions by phone; they take the call immediately or call back within an hour usually.

Our testing was covered by insurance. IUIs were around $450-ish, not including the cost of drugs.
Describe Susan Trout (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
She [Dr. Trout] is good at responding to questions and providing information when asked but she is somewhat passive about trying different things and doing diagnostics when things don't work. I had to ask for it, and ask a lot of questions about what other options we could try.... I had donor embryos. We tried a LOT of estrogen to get my lining thick enough, and progesterone. She was also willing to try (and she was the one who suggested) something experimental - an expensive drug usually used to fight cancer, that has inconsistent results in helping to thicken lining.
It's a small office [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] and they consistently had me work with the same nurse which meant she knew what was going on when I spoke to her....It was great to have one person consistently, which was very different from my experience at a different doctors office previously. She is very succinct, to the point, without excessive emotion which I appreciate. She is willing to go to bat for me when needed.... I don't feel at all like I get lost amongst the noise. I recognize almost all the staff, and the doctor callede from her cell phone one time when needed. It's much more personal than other places I've been.

Nothing major - when I was considering another doctor my files didn't arrive in time for the appointment.
Dr. Trout is clearly very bright, and is kind, but not great with talking through all aspects of procedures, treatment, medication. I was disappointed that her nurse did 95% of my intake consultation and I only spent the last 5% of the appointment with Dr Trout, where she didn't ask me any questions really about medical history etc, but began prescribing treatment. I feel like Dr Trout is extremely bright and qualified, but I never quite felt comfortable as her patient - she was a bit impersonal and hard to communicate with.
CRE is small, so you get to know all of the staff there (even if they don't remember you)....Last week I went in to CRE for blood work. When I was sitting in the waiting room, both Dr. Trout and my nurse Melinda walked through the waiting room at separate times. I said hello to each of them, having met each multiple times for my 2 consultations, 3 ultrasounds and 3 IUIs, in which they both were treating me. Neither of them said hello in return and looked at me like they didn't recognize me.

Each IUI was out of pocket $450 I believe. Plus an ultrasound each cycle ($150) and medications (clomid and ovidrel were total around $200 each month). Grand total for 3 IUIs plus consultations was probably between $2500-$3000.
The devastating information was shared in a passing manner, and she seemed annoyed having to explain the results to us. ... She had zero hope that I would ever get pregnant and assumed I, therefore, would not be interested in taking care of other reproductive health issues. My husband and I allowed Dr. Trout to remove the fibroid and resect the uterine septum only because the procedure was already scheduled, and we did not want to delay the next step in our fertility journey.
Strengths: The office space [Colorado Repro Endo] is like a typical medical office. The staff respond quickly to phone calls and seem informed. The nurses and receptionists were kind. The clinical coordinator was organized. Weakness: Parking is challenging around the medical center where Dr. Trout is located. Staff do not seem as organized, and you may have to be proactive about calling to schedule treatments or tests.
How was your experience with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
She is abrupt and does not show compassion to patients. She fails to educate patients on medical diagnoses and recommended treatments. She is not a skilled reproductive endocrinologist. She is pessimistic in her approach to care and does not listen to her patients' preferences. Local acupuncturists who work with infertility patients do not refer clients to Dr. Trout because they are not confident in the work she performs.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Don't see her unless you only need a fibroid removal. Find a different doctor to address your infertility problems. Schedule an appointment with a second reproductive endocrinologist to obtain a second opinion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Dr. Trout's nurse called me with all test results, and some of my test results were unexpected. My FSH was 32 (elevated for my age), and my Anti-Mullerian Hormone was 0.16 (extremely low for my age), which indicated I had low ovarian reserve. I was scheduled for a pre-operative visit before having a fibroid removed, and at the pre-operative visit, we had to remind Dr. Trout to review the lab results with us. She delivered the test results and meaning of the results in an abrupt manner and blamed by infertility on cigarette smoking I did in college at weekend parties (highly unlikely to be the cause). The devastating information was shared in a passing manner, and she seemed annoyed having to explain the results to us. My husband and I knew more about the meaning of the results based on our own research rather than the explanation given by Dr. Trout. It was concerning that we were informed by Dr. Trout's nurse that she would discuss these results with us at the pre-operative visit, but she did not remember to do so without prompting. Also, I was scheduled to have uterine fibroids removed and a hysteroscopic resection of uterine septum by Dr. Trout, but Dr. Trout's note to her nurse stated that I may not even want surgery since my lab work was so terrible.

I had a hysteroscopic resection of my uterine septum and myomectomy (uterine fibroid removal). Dr. Trout only recommended I use donor eggs for IVF and would not consider minimal stimulation to retrieve eggs from my ovaries.

She [Dr. Trout] was able to communicate what I needed to know and I understood the odds of getting pregnant. When I asked her how I could increase my odds she let me know the choices I had. I have heard other doctors refuse to allow an IUI simply because of a patient's age. She did not ever tell me that...She saw me for all of my visits. The IUIs were done by her nurse, but as a physician I may have been treated better than if I were not? I do not know that, but she waas very forthcoming about what I needed to know and we had a good rapport.

We didn’t get to interact with Dr Trout other than the initial consult and when we asked to follow up with her. My AMH went down quite a bit and no one brought this up.
The process is a very emotional process and [Dr. Trout] addressed all of my concerns even when I was emotional. She answered emails, her assistants made phone calls. I never had any issues getting a hold of her or her staff to answer any of my questions or concerns...was always very forward with the results of our test but also showed compassion...made me feel comfortable very time she walked into the room.
We lived nearly three hours away from the clinic [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology]. They worked with our local health clinic to do the ultrasounds. My hometown clinic would send over ultrasounds every morning and CRE would call by noon with the results and the next set of protocol...Everyone greeted my husband and I by name and always made sure we were comfortable. At the beginning, I felt that we jumped into planning my IVF cycle without getting all the results to make sure it was time. I was disappointed when we had the cycle completely planned out only to get results back later and find that a certain issue had to be fixed first. It was easy to readjust the schedule, but it was very overwhelming.
How was your experience with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Dr. Trout was always very forward with the results of our test but also showed compassion on helping me deal with all the emotions that went along with IVF. She made recommendations, was easy to contact and discuss questions with, and made me feel comfortable very time she walked into the room.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
Be open with her, let her see your raw emotion, and she will show you compassion and hope!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Susan Trout (retired) at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed)?
The process is a very emotional process and Dr. Troutaddressed all of my concerns even when I was emotional. She answered emails, her assistants made phone calls. I never had any issues getting a hold of her or her staff to answer any of my questions or concerns.

I had a cyst on my ovary that she [Dr Trout at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] did not remove during surgery because she inaccurately diagnosed it as a poly cystic ovary. The cyst continued to grow because it was an endometrial cyst. Eventually I landed myself in the ER because it was hemorrhaging blood and was the size of my ovary itself. She also missed endometriosis on my fallopian tubes. Also, incorrectly informed me that endometriosis cannot return a few months after a laparoscopy when absolutely it can.

However, thanks to this experience, I have helped to found a non-profit called the Endo Challenge which focuses on raising awareness for endometriosis and providing ACCURATE information to sufferers. Do not, under any circumstances, go into surgery with Susan Trout.

Don't do it. Find a new doctor!!!

The only treatment was metformin for a pcos cyst that I didn't have.

It took 4 months after the laparoscopy was done for anyone to get in touch with me regarding the results and stage of the endometriosis. Although, the results they gave me were probably inaccurate as well.

I've pretty much covered it all. Inaccurate information, misdiagnosed and given unnecessecary medication.
She’s [Dr. Susan Trout] very professional and understanding considering she went through this as well. She provides all of the information needed. She explains everything in length and allowed us to ask questions until we completely understood what path we needed to follow.... I tried chlomid, Injections, prometrium, trigger shots. I did many different things and depending on my cycle and or follicles things had to be adjusted
Melinda [a nurse at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology- Denver] was and is one of a kind. Always returned calls and explained things until we understood them. She was thorough and so very kind!... The waiting room is little to be desired. It needs a makeover. Weekend appointments the staff were not or not always on time. If someone is at the front desk they always greet you. There are not enough seats if there are many people, but everyone who goes there is friendly and accommodating

While it's standard to only meet with her at your initial visit (and likely when your plan needs adjusting), she is very open and willing to meet with you privately should you feel the need....Dr. Trout is open to all types of treatment and isn't quick to put you on loads of hormones if she feels a certain treatment / drug may be successful. She adjusted my plan accordingly and introduced various medicines and hormones only when needed.
All staff [at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] are professional, caring and knowledgeable. Her front desk staff, specifically Rose, are very helpful and organized....Everything was out of pocket as infertility was not covered by my insurance....Dr. Trout has great bedside manner and is very thorough in her explanation of your care and treatment plan. She [Dr. Trout] seems very smart but has a bad bedside manner. She also has her nurses handle most everything when sometimes it would be nice to hear from her. She also doesn’t really get to know me for the initial appointment instead she jumped right into the negativity...She laughed at the end of telling me the horrible news... The nursing staff is the one who talked to me the most and the were very kind
It does take a few days to hear back from the nurses [Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology] sometimes so you have to just continue to call and eventually you will hear back. Make sure you make it clear to everyone what you want because I backed down and let them take control over my Diagnoses and ended up sick because they wanted to try something I knew wasn’t what I wanted.

Dr. Trout was candid with me, she actually put me in a positive mindset, I had been transferred over from an OB-Gyn and she was sure to look through their findings and focus on what needed to be done with me.... She was very open about my treatment and diagnosis. She explained to me why and how each step was done.... As a new patient come prepared for a great introduction to fertility and when your blood results come in bring a notepad because you will learn something.
I received bad news 4 total cycles with Dr. Trout's office and each time the nurses called with that bad news they were compassionate and understanding. They have seen so many ups and downs that they could be crude and not care. They take their time and understand what each patient is going through.... A little more comfort in the waiting room would be nice. As a new patient come prepared for a great introduction to fertility and when your blood results come in bring a notepad because you will learn something.

Dr. Trout did a free over the phone consult which I loved and felt heard...She was very straight forward with the softness needed to give not so great news and advice/ opinion...She said we could transfer two if we wanted -because of my age (36)...I really wanted to do an ERA test. She explained that she doesn't usually do that after only one failed transfer. She said it can't hurt anything and could also serve as an endometrial scratch too. We did the ERA...No rushing and she was so calm. I feel very confident with her
[Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology is] on the smaller intimate side...They answered all the insurance questions and even got my insurance to cover things I thought they wouldn't...They have two nurses. You see both of them many times...They were all friendly and helpful...My first round of IVF just procedures no MEds was $13,500 and then meds @ $6,800

Dr.Trout did a free over the phone consult which I loved and felt heard. I then went in with my husband for an in-office consult and review of our test results from my general OB and also the test results from another clinic (so two sets). She was very straight forward with the softness needed to give not so great news and advice/ opinion. She laid out what her thoughts were for a treatment plan for us and answered all of our questions. No rushing and she was so calm. I feel very confident with her and her lovely staff. The two nurses return your calls and talk with you like a human and a woman! I want everyone in this infertility boat to know about her and her team of professionals! They are hidden gems. I think there are other more known offices with multiple doctors etc using biased stats on their numbers in Denver Metro and they charge outrages prices. I am so wholeheartedly happy to have found Dr.Trout and Colorado Repo Endocrinology!

We were diagnosed with MFI and we needed to go straight to IVF. We were told we could try IUI and told about the cost and risks involved but ultimately that didn't have great odds. We chose IVF and have done one transfer of a Grade 5AA embyro that didn't take. Dr.Trout want to go into doing another transfer but I really wanted to do an ERA test. She explained that she doesn't usually do that after only one failed transfer. She said it can't hurt anything and could also serve as an endometrial scratch too. We did the ERA and now waiting to do another transfer in the next couple month(until the pandemic settles and the state allows transfers again)

It's not a super big place. More on the smaller intimate side. You won't be in the waiting area with 10 other people waiting for your appt. You will know all the ladies that work there by the end of it! They were all friendly and helpful. They answered all the insurance questions and even got my insurance to cover things I thought they wouldn't!

Describe Susan Trout (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology (closed).
She said we could transfer two if we wanted -because of my age (36). She suggested to do the best embryo first and work down. So we wanted to do two all the way up until the week before we decided to do the single best.
I hardly ever saw [Dr. Susan Trout]...She is too busy and let’s the nurses do everything. She needs to get information on how to use different IVF protocols for particular patients and not do a retrieval when eggs are not mature enough...Follistim, Lupron and li dose hcg for my stims Trigger And premature retrival...

The consults have been very educational. Dr. Trout presents the facts as they relate to you and the options based on the stage of the process. It happens verbally - and I wish there were documents so I can go home and reference the information again.... anytime i call and ask a question they dont remember things about my chart and have to open it up and review it... Scheduling feels mostly based on what is convenient for them vs how to help
Because there is one Doctor and a smaller staff [at Colorado Reproductive Endocrinology]- scheduling can be tricky. I travel for work and sometimes fitting in visits can be hard to coordinate. I like the location of the clinic - easy to get to - although not on my ordinary path... The nurses are all friendly - I did not/do not have one specific nurse so there isnt consistency. Calls are returned within the same day.
