I was coming into treatment after the 18 week loss of a spontaneous pregnancy, and at no point did [Dr. Price] show any compassion or empathy for my situation. Communication was non-existent. After tests came back with low AMH levels he immediately focused on donor eggs despite my previous spontaneous pregnancy. Once I conceded to donor eggs, my protocol was never explained to me and I was never given any options with regards to my treatment...
[Duke Fertility Center] is highly disorganized and impersonal, and care is frequently rushed and poorly performed by fellows and medical students. Important and potentially devastating news is delivered via MyChart or by a lab tech. Phone calls are never answered or returned. Patients do not have a dedicated care team and will see several doctors and nurses without developing a relationship with any of them.
How was your experience with Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center?
My experience with Dr. Price was an absolute nightmare. I was coming into treatment after the 18 week loss of a spontaneous pregnancy, and at no point did he show any compassion or empathy for my situation. Communication was non-existent. After tests came back with low AMH levels he immediately focused on donor eggs despite my previous spontaneous pregnancy. Once I conceded to donor eggs, my protocol was never explained to me and I was never given any options with regards to my treatment (fresh versus frozen egg transfer, for example), which failed. When asked why treatment failed and what could be done differently next time, he offered no explanation beyond recommending a false cycle with the exact same protocol to make sure I didn't have endometrial inflammation (I didn't). When I became spontaneously pregnant again during a pause between cycles, he left my first ultrasound in the hands of inexperienced fellows while he stepped out for coffee. The fellows badly bungled diagnosing a blighted ovum. He neglected to follow up regarding regarding the diagnosis and did not communicate any information or explanation of the experience or diagnosis when asked.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center?
I highly recommend that you seek a different care provider.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center?
I consulted Dr. Price in 2018, and saw him off and on until the beginning of 2022, extremely regularly from the summer of 2021 until January of 2022. At no point did he appear to recognize me outside of the consultation room. Further, he never consulted my chart prior to meetings and repeatedly asked me questions that could have been answered had he consulted my chart.
Describe the protocols Thomas Price used in your cycles at Duke Fertility Center and their degree of success.
There was no rationale to the protocol that was expressed to me, nor was the protocol ever explained to me. I underwent a fresh egg transfer of a fertilized donor egg, and the protocol included birth control pills, in addition to lupron and progesterone injections.
Describe your experience with Duke Fertility Center.
The clinic is highly disorganized and impersonal, and care is frequently rushed and poorly performed by fellows and medical students. Important and potentially devastating news is delivered via MyChart or by a lab tech. Phone calls are never answered or returned. Patients do not have a dedicated care team and will see several doctors and nurses without developing a relationship with any of them. Patients will rarely, if ever, see their "doctor" and the doctor will not perform most delicate procedures. Certain nurses, in particular, will share unverified medical opinions with you. In my experience, the one nurse I saw with any regularity performed my uterine ultrasounds over a period of six months and repeatedly informed me that I had uterine fibroids despite the fact that I have never been diagnosed with uterine fibroids.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center.
Over $10,000
Describe Thomas Price's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Duke Fertility Center.
I was never offered the opportunity to choose between single and multiple embryo transfer and did not know that I could express a preference. I only underwent one single embryo transfer, which failed.

Appeared very knowledgeable but did not have any patient compassion. He [Dr. Price] honestly made us feel like we were taking up his time when we asked lots of questions, did not give me blount information, always “danced” around some topics and have more statistics than honest answers.... he never knew my chart when he entered the room, always asked me questions that has been answered in previous meetings that were clearly on the chart
Had trouble getting a call back from the clinic [Duke Fertility Center], would be on hold from 5-50 minutes... Very clean, up to date patient areas, flexible with appointments during IVF cycle, kind front office staff. Great turnaround time when calling with results of testing, although some nurses were rude on the phone when giving negative HCG results, offered psychological assistance of dealing with stress from IVF.... Some were knowledgeable, others were not.

Expect statistics and no real answers. When asking him about further treatment and knowing that my egg quality is poor along with severe endometriosis, he continued to suggest IVF when asked about egg donors.

I started seeing Dr. Price for recurrent loss. He ran a slew of tests, more than most doctors seem to, and gave me options for further testing. Due to some of my numbers, we tried Femara/Letrozole for 1 cycle (had a CP) and Clomid for another (had an ectopic). Our next plan of attack is Clomid again...He [Dr. Thomas Price] may not be the most sensitive man when it comes to speaking, and can be very blunt. But he knows what he's talking about and is thorough. He's good at explaining issues, reasons, medications, and treatment plans. And he's usually quick to respond (and will respond to a ton of questions, even if he may think they're silly). He gives pros and cons, laying out options and helping you understand them, but lets you make decisions about your own care when there is a choice to be made. He hasn't been pushy about treatments and has been caring when I have experienced loss.
Scheduling an appointment [at Duke fertility] isn't terribly hard, depending on what you need. But my biggest complaint is wait time for blood draws -- waiting an hour+ for something that takes <5 minutes is a terrible waste of my time. The office staff is friendly and helpful, though...I started seeing Dr. Price for recurrent loss. He ran a slew of tests, more than most doctors seem to, and gave me options for further testing. Understand that his personality might not meet your needs, and that is fine. He is a bit socially awkward and seems to have an all-absorbing interest his field -- but that interest and knowledge is why I like him. He knows his stuff but may not have the "bedside manner" that some people need/want.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center?
Dr. Price is a bit socially awkward and is very blunt/direct...but he cares. He gets to know you, asks about other parts of your life, takes those into consideration in his treatment, and responds quickly and thoroughly. He will reply 1000 times to questions. And genuinely seems to care if we succeed.

Dr. Price is a very straight forward person. He is very serious in his practice. He rarely smiles but makes eye contact when needed. He only saw my husband and I twice and we had to deal with other doctors and nurses in the clinic....He will remain professional and be straight forward with you but do not expect any warm and fuzzy feeling.
We had to change our treatment time a couple of times due to Thanksgiving and Christmas time b/c the clinic [Duke] was closed and we could not go for testing. Therefore, we were told during those time to just try naturally and skip the IUI treatment. Despite high cost of medication we had to delay that and it is not fair at all.

After the first visit we had with Dr. Price we had to deal with other doctors and nurses in the clinic for other testing and blood work and they adjust medication and dose.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Duke Fertility Center.
I had to work with multiple nurses. At times it was confusing since so many people provided care for me.
Describe your experience with Duke Fertility Center.
I would say as big as Duke facility is, this clinic has no business to be closed on holidays and no lab or cycle needs to get wasted based on hours of operation. If Duke ER can be open 24-7 then this clinic should refer patients to Duke ER for further testing during holiday hours and when they are closed. We had to change our treatment time a couple of times due to Thanksgiving and Christmas time b/c the clinic was closed and we could not go for testing. Therefore, we were told during those time to just try naturally and skip the IUI treatment. Despite high cost of medication we had to delay that and it is not fair at all.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center.
At least 50% of cost of doctor visit and medication were covered by insurance and even despite that we have spent more than 10,000.00 and to continue with IVF or egg donor was impossible for us due to additional cost.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Duke Fertility Center.
We had multiple experiences when we missed cycles during holiday hours. Despite spending all the high cost medications b/c the clinic was not open so they could do the blood work we had to skip the IUI cycle and were told to try naturally. My husband was very discouraged by this and since my insurance only would cover services with Duke doctors we could not leave and go to another clinic. We feel that the opportunity was lost for us to get pregnant in this clinic due to mismanage work that was done.

We had our embryos transferred to another clinic. Phone calls to coordinate this were not returned to they point we considered contacting a lawyer. When we did successfully have them moved, they arrived with no paperwork. Thankfully my med rec number was inscribed on the straws and I had it memorized. There was a huge turn over before my second transfer. A new doc did my transfer and he didn't seem to know where the buttons were on the ultrasound, fumbling around while a loaded catheter was in place. Even the fellow looked horrified. I remember much if both of my retrievals, including pain. My concerns when bringing this up before my second retrieval were dismissed.

After going through a couple cycles with him and looking back (after transferring to a different clinic), I don't think his [Dr Thomas Price] approach was nearly as aggressive enough as was warranted for my situation. After 2 failures (both BFPs that didn't make it out of the first trimester), he jumped straight to donor egg as one of my next options to evaluate. When he had zero explanation for the losses.
While initially my impression of Dr. Price was positive, looking back I question the course of action that he directed us to take knowing our history...Front desk staff [at Duke Fertility Center] was always friendly and welcoming. Lab staff were hit or miss (some were great, some took 2 tries before successfully drawing blood out of my arm). Counseling on site at the time I attended (Julia Woodward) but after several visits I found no benefit and discontinued care.

I think Dr. Price does care about his patients, but doesn’t have a great bedside manner. He doesn’t take a lot of time to explain things in person, but he will respond to email....He isn’t one to think outside the box in regards to treatment. Very formulaic in the treatment of patients. If you are a basic case then he will work with you. I didn’t feel like he would thoroughly explain my options and I wasn’t given any resources....I was told donor eggs were my only option at age 34.
The billing was incorrect and took forever to fix. My high quality donor embryo didn’t thaw. My paperwork for frozen embryos listed 2 and there was only one....The only strength is that there are discounted plans if you’re a Duke employee. Other than that, go elsewhere. The financial office is a hot mess and billing is often wrong. The doctors don’t keep up with new techniques, and none of them are particularly compassionate. The lab is subpar, but there is a new embryologist. T

He's [Dr. Price] on the direct/blunt side, but I like that. Not super warm/fuzzy, but still kind. Really good at explaining every step during examinations and procedures, and keeping me calm. Answers questions in session, and through patient portal....I did 3 rounds of Prednisone and letrozol, which were unsuccessful in creating a pregnancy. He thinks I have PCOS and may not be ovulating, but I did appear to ovulate on the meds. An HSG was done, and IUI was recommended. Haven't started that yet.
[Duke Fertility is] Generally well organized, biggest strength is doctors, biggest weakness was financial advising staff. They seemed to frame everything in a negative light and really overwhelmed me. The online patient portal is great....[Nursing Staff] Generally kind and easy to talk to. Front desk staff sometimes appear busy/preoccupied.... He's [Dr. Price] on the direct/blunt side, but I like that. Not super warm/fuzzy, but still kind. He's on the direct/blunt side, but I like that. Not super warm/fuzzy, but still kind. Really good at explaining every step during examinations and procedures, and keeping me calm. Answers questions in session, and through patient portal.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center?

Describe the protocols Thomas Price used in your cycles at Duke Fertility Center and their degree of success.
I did 3 rounds of Prednisone and letrozol, which were unsuccessful in creating a pregnancy. He thinks I have PCOS and may not be ovulating, but I did appear to ovulate on the meds. An HSG was done, and IUI was recommended. Haven't started that yet.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Duke Fertility Center.
Generally kind and easy to talk to. Front desk staff sometimes appear busy/preoccupied.
Describe your experience with Duke Fertility Center.
Generally well organized, biggest strength is doctors, biggest weakness was financial advising staff. They seemed to frame everything in a negative light and really overwhelmed me. The online patient portal is great.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Thomas Price at Duke Fertility Center.
So far everything has been covered by insurance, with a copay. IUI will be 547+meds, ivf is estimated around 14k.
Describe Thomas Price's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Duke Fertility Center.

He [Dr. Thomas Price] refused to treat me based on my age. The exchange was abrupt and curt. He said the cut off was 43 for IVF at his clinic. I had just turned 44. I drove over 2 hours for the appointment... He reluctantly told me my success with egg donor ivf would be greater, then handed me off to office staff for a flyer on egg donation costs, but in every gesture rejected me as a client. I am interested in egg donation, and already knew my chances with my own eggs were low, but never expected to be treated so badly.
I was refused treatment [at Duke Fertility Center] and my copay was returned...I was refused treatment based on my age. I am 44. This information was not included on the clinic's website and I was not informed when I called to make the appointment even though my age and intent were stated....It seemed clean. I did not have to wait long. The clinic does not post age restrictions on their website or inform you when you make initial appointments. Many people drive far for ivf treatment so this should be protocol...

Dr. Price patiently listened to my every concern. He was so kind and thoughtful. He would allow me to share studies with him and explain in a data driven way why he might come out differently. I think he’s probably the most thoughtful and knowledgeable physician I have ever encountered....Antagonist protocol (twice), with PGS testing of 5 day embryos. Produced 7 5-day embryos across two freeze all cycles. Agonist protocol with 3 day freeze all embryos.
They are a very good clinic [Duke Fertility Center]. They don’t have the most up to date technology, and you primarily see the REI fellow, but the physicians are very responsive to email communications and very thoughtful. I do wish the Used time-lapsed monitoring of embryos and had 3D sonography. I don’t know the quality of the lab and have a sense that it varies by the embryologist working...9k per cycle plus 1500 for ICSI plus 2 k for PGS testing....

It’s been a long time but what I can remember is starting with clomid because I wasn’t ovulating. When that didn’t work injections. When that didn’t work added IUI. When that didn’t work IVF. Ended up using ICSI too because sperm motility was poor.

He [Dr. Price] is honest and open with his patients. Some people may feel it’s not the best bedside manner but i liked his honesty. He truly cared about me as a patient and worked with us and our insurance to get the best results.... He was honest and cared about each cycle messaging me through their system to check on me.... Everyone there [Duke Fertility] seemed to really care about the patients. They were always open and willing to speak with you about anything.
Everyone there [Duke Fertility] seemed to really care about the patients. They were always open and willing to speak with you about anything. They made sure to be very friendly. One weakness was not having a space for those who were coming in finding out the pregnancy didn’t take. That felt rushed at times.... They were amazing going above and beyond to help with everything from making sure I had all my medications ordered
