[Dr. Sahakian] was open and flexible, tailoring the strategy to my specific needs i.e. accommodating egg donation from outside the US...The appointments were short, so I had to go in armed with questions...He was particularly supportive when I had a big bleed early on in my pregnancy and it was 50/50 as to whether I would miscarry. He was available by phone throughout the evening that this happened giving my husband and I advice, and booked us in the next day for a check-up
Every decision [at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles] was made based on how the IVF cycle was going; egg maturation and retrieval timing was held as sacrosanct. If it was too close to call when a medication should be tweaked or introduced in the cycle, then the clinic brought you in for extra check-up appointments to be sure. If those fell on a weekend or holiday, no problem...The care co-ordinators and nurses who treated me were always compassionate and made me feel like I was in safe and caring hands.
How was your experience with Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
Going through IVF treatment has been one of the hardest things I've had to go through in my life. My chances of conceiving were unclear based on my low AMH, high FSH, and low AFC for my age (36 years old). Throughout my treatment, it transpired that my egg quality was poor. Dr. Sahakian brought a wealth of experience and skills to the table. His communication style was direct yet empathetic, and he provided swift and precise answers to my questions. From the start, he was open to different options, including using my own eggs versus a donor’s eggs from abroad, which helped me stay as hopeful as possible. The appointments were short, so I had to go in armed with questions as there wasn’t a lot of room to respond to what was often bad news in my case. Sometimes this felt rushed and I came out of them feeling like I had more questions to ask. On the upside, Dr. Sahakian was very responsive to follow up emails, and was happy to hop on zoom calls to help my husband and I process complex and tough information. He was particularly supportive when I had a big bleed early on in my pregnancy and it was 50/50 as to whether I would miscarry. He was available by phone throughout the evening that this happened giving my husband and I advice, and booked us in the next day for a check-up. He saw us weekly after that until things stabilized (I was fortunate enough not to miscarry).
I’m not sure that Dr. Sahakian’s sense of humor is for everyone going through this treatment. Personally, I found most of his jokes to be amusing, well-timed and to lighten the moment making everything more human, but I could understand that this wouldn’t be the case for some. It all depends on what style works for you going through a process like IVF.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
Check-ups are short. Go in armed with a list of questions and flag up front that you have a list so you get through them all.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
Each staff member was compassionate and empathetic to my journey, which certainly made me feel like a human rather than a number. The doctor was open and flexible, tailoring the strategy to my specific needs i.e. accommodating egg donation from outside the US. And the nurses got me through some of my toughest times with their kindness and support. Initially, the patient service could feel disjointed and impersonal. Check-up appointments were quick, and I had a couple different case managers (one of them off-site) during the height of the covid pandemic. This meant that I had to check, clarify, and restate things I’d already said to multiple people. However, once I raised this issue with them, they received my feedback with grace, and this got much better. This responsiveness to my experience further made me feel like a human rather than a number.
Describe the protocols Vicken Sahakian used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles and their degree of success.
We used Follistim and Menopur for the stimulation medication. Omnitrope was added alongside these two after the first cycle to help mature the eggs. Ganirelix was used as the control, and Pregnyl as the trigger medication.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles. (Assigned nurse: Care coordinators changed throughout the process)
Initially, the patient service could feel disjointed and impersonal. Check-up appointments were quick, and I had a couple different care co-ordinators (one of them off-site) during the height of the covid pandemic. There seemed to be an issue with internal communication and this meant that I had to check, clarify, and restate things I’d already said to multiple people. I’m unclear on how much the impact of pivoting to working during the pandemic fed into this. Nonetheless, once I raised this issue with them, they received my feedback with grace, and this got much better. The care co-ordinators and nurses who treated me were always compassionate and made me feel like I was in safe and caring hands. There was one nurse in particular who would always come and check on me after my appointments. I bounced questions off her when I felt overwhelmed and unclear, and she reassured me. I remember during my third retrieval when I was in one of my darkest places, another nurse sat with me beyond the end of her shift, just holding my hand and offering words of comfort and hope. She also gave me her email in case I wanted to email her later. That was a very special moment and still brings tears to my eyes.
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
I found the clinic to be very knowledgeable, flexible, and dedicated to achieving success wherever possible for their patients. Every decision was made based on how the IVF cycle was going; egg maturation and retrieval timing was held as sacrosanct. If it was too close to call when a medication should be tweaked or introduced in the cycle, then the clinic brought you in for extra check-up appointments to be sure. If those fell on a weekend or holiday, no problem. The key was to get the timing right so that we had the best chance of retrieving the maximum number of mature eggs. In my case where my AFC was low and egg quality poor, this was everything. They also accommodated a back-up option using donor eggs from abroad and worked closely with me to arrange those logistics alongside my own treatment. I was impressed at their commitment and flexibility around this arrangement. I personally would have liked more in-depth onboarding to the upcoming process beyond an email from my care co-ordinator. IVF demands financial and physical commitment, and it’s time-sensitive. I’m the type of person who likes to understand the broad framework upfront. Thus, I would have preferred an introductory call and a sample treatment calendar with potential injection timings to frame our expectations and allow us to roughly plan around upcoming commitments. In the beginning, I also experienced what seems to have been some internal miscommunication and this meant that I had to check, clarify, and restate things I’d already said to multiple people. I’m unclear on how much the impact of pivoting to working during the pandemic fed into this. Nonetheless, once I raised this issue with them, they received my feedback with grace, and this got much better. Lastly, the clinic facilities are well-designed, clean and welcoming. The staff are friendly and supportive, and keep things running efficiently. I always felt cared for and comfortable.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
In the beginning, I experienced what seems to have been some internal miscommunication and this meant that I had to check, clarify, and restate things I’d already said to multiple people. After an unsuccessful first IVF cycle, the doctor confirmed that I would stay on the same medications and dosages for the next round as my body responded well (within what it is capable of doing), yet when I received the medication breakdown from the pharmacy, there was a new medication listed. Upon checking, I discovered that the doctor subsequently recommended adding this new medication but I hadn’t been informed by my care co-ordinator.

[Dr. Vicken Sahakian] is friendly and he is kind. I think he was overly confident with my situation because I am a generally healthy patient with no clear fertility issues other than no tubes and history of ectopics. He answered all of our questions and I felt he was compassionate when we did not leave with a positive test...[he] awarded us a discounted cycle...After choosing to do PGTA, I only had 1 normal embryo. Dr did not recommend transfer of mosaics.
Strength [of Pacific Fertility Center of Los Angeles] is the reception staff and the waiting area. The reception is always kind, welcoming and helpful. The waiting area is clean and modern...Weakness is the poor attitude of the finance department...my care coordinator was disorganized and she did not make appropriate notes in our chart, didn’t return our calls or emails, and did not provide us with results in a timely manner.

Advocate for yourself and do not be afraid to ask questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
The finance rep was extremely off putting. Dr. Sahakian awarded us a discounted cycle and I feel that the finance rep treated us differently because of it. Also, my care coordinator was disorganized and she did not make appropriate notes in our chart, didn’t return our calls or emails, and did not provide us with results in a timely manner.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles. (Assigned nurse: Janelle)
My original nurse/coordinator was not professional and completely disorganized. Her work ethic created fear and anxiety for us. After being transferred to a new coordinator, I had a better experience; however, I was at the end of my cycle. It was apparent that the clinic was experiencing some operational changes and challenges.
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
Strength is the reception staff and the waiting area. The reception is always kind, welcoming and helpful. The waiting area is clean and modern. You feel like like you are in the best care. Weakness is the poor attitude of the finance department. As a fertility clinic it should be common knowledge that it could be isolating as a patient. There are waves of emotions and patients need to be treated with care and compassion.

the doctor [Dr. Vicken Sahakian] sold the clinic mid cycle and checked out completely. No notice to his patients and no reassurance quality of care would be upheld...Lupron, gonal f, menupour. However absolutely no support on taking supplemental vitamins and no recommendations on acupuncture. Just terrible communication. The results reflect this. Hes checked out...Doctor didnt show to transfer without letting us know. He said he forgot to tell us he would be in hawaii. Further he told our surrogate shes crazy, my mouth fell to the floor. Further he refused to elaborate on his 42% success rate with me other than he doesnt guarantee anything. When I pressed for embryology reports I was told to take a hike in those words. Worst experience in my life!
[The nurses at Pacific Fertility Center are] never accessible...Always providing wrong information at one point they thought they were reading my patient file but uh hum....yes same 1st name different patient records after I took the time to verify my date of birth. All they said was oopsie daisies...When I pressed for embryology reports I was told to take a hike in those words. Worst experience in my life!...After first retrieval coming out of surgery, the billing director asked if she could help me pull my credit card from my purse because there was an IV in my arm. Not sure why this wasnt resolved BEFORE I went in for surgery. It goes on and on...just horrible.
How was your experience with Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
His bedside manner is horrible. He told our surrogate she is crazy to do this. Further, after an unexplained unsuccessful retrieval he said theres no explanation and he doesnt guarantee anything. However he added if I ever want to have children I need to do another cycle IMMEDIATELY. Yes i made 2 perfect embryos but the doctor sold the clinic mid cycle and checked out completely. No notice to his patients and no reassurance quality of care would be upheld.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
Wait 2-3 more years until the clinic resolves the transition from the sale of the clinic and absolutely monitor clinic results. To be honest I would tell people to run for their lives!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
The doctor sold the clinic in the middle of our stim cycle. Did not show up for transfer to our surrogate and told me after multiple failed procedures that he doesnt guarantee anything and I can take a hike. Literally exact words used after spending 60k with no results. Horrible experience. Failed retrieval and failed transfer. Doctor refuses to provide certain records. Just a huge mess.

Very weak communication, billing personnel are very disorganized and always reflect balances were owed after I had paid. I literally kept payment receipts on me every time I went to the clinic I knew someone was going to tell me I owed a balance. It's really really bad!
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
I was definitely a number. My name was mixed up several times, waits were painfully long and actual screening took seconds. However billing appointments took up to 2 hours per visit. After all I brought receipts and it took them hours to find and resolve.

Dr Sahakian was candid, knowledge and personable through the whole process. He was able to explain the process and different alternatives to us in a language that we understood...We are a gay male couple and used a surrogate for IVF...Dr Sahakian was able to answer all of our questions and we felt confident in his abilities as our fertility doctor...He met with us and was candid and personable through the entire process...we were, and are happy with the results and our now nine-year-old triplets !
The clinic [Pacific Fertility] was clean and organized and centrally located. We had positive experiences there with all of our visits...it was a positive experience and we felt that the nurses that we worked with were compassionate and knowledgeable...we paid for three IVF procedures rather than one at a time. I think the cost of the time for three was around $18- 20,000. If a successful pregnancy did not result, the percentage of the money would've been returned .

Dr Sahakian was candid, knowledge and personable through the whole process. He was able to explain the process and different alternatives to us in a language that we understood. We are a gay male couple and used a surrogate for IVF. Our first attempt using fresh embryos resulted in a miscarriage early in the pregnancy. Our second attempt with the use of leftover frozen embryos did not result in a pregnancy at all. We then changed egg donors, and used the same surrogate. Our third and final attempt, with fresh embryos that we allowed to go to blastocyst, resulted in triplets. They were carried 33 weeks and 3 days and were born healthy and did not need to go to the NICU.

Our experience with the nurses was over 10 years ago, so it is difficult to remember other than it was a positive experience and we felt that the nurses that we worked with were compassionate and knowledgeable.

We choose to do a transfer with three embryos because it was our third and final attempt and we wanted to be sure of a pregnancy. We were not expecting triplets, and Dr Sahakian gave us the statistics in detail, So we choose to implant three embryos and it turned out to be a blessing.

In my first meeting with Dr. Sahakian he got right to the point, which I loved, but his delivery was very kind. After 3 failed IVF's with my first set of donors (one miscarriage), he diligently shifted to having me go through immunology testing in order to find out why I wasn't getting pregnant with donor eggs. We then switched donors and lead to my successful pregnancy and delivery of my twin girls.
Every time I walked in the PFC I felt welcome. From Nicole at the front desk, to the nursing and cycle coordinators. Some days I left like they wanted it to happen for me more than I did - lol. They were amazing...The clinic as organized, rarely if ever behind schedule, everyone was always on top of their game. I spent a LOT of time there and don't ever remember feeling stressed or bothered.
How was your experience with Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles?
Dr. Sahakian was my second Doctor after I spent a year at a different clinic. The Dr. at the first clinic was very kind, but not aggressive in his approach. I spent a year doing 6 shots a day, 3 different drugs, garnering one egg each cycle. Nowhere did he say let's step this up and use an egg donor. Expect Dr. Sahakian to be direct with his approach, yet kind in his delivery. You will always know where things stand, and what's around the bend.

I recall he offered a package plan for 3 IVFs. If you did not get pregnant to 12 weeks (not sure of time frame it's been 9 years) he would refund tou $12k. I wished I used it! I got pregnant on the third IVF and lost the baby at 9 weeks. I signed up for the package deal with my second set of donors and Murphy's law would have it that I got pregnant with my twins on the first IVF in that package. I would encourage anyone to use the deal. It ends up saving you money no matter what.

Dr. Sahakian was very accessible throughout my whole treatment. We came to him after growing increasingly frustrated with the results at another clinic. We had Dr. Sahakian's cell phone number and he spent a lot of time explaining to us why our previous treatments at the other clinic didn't work...is very thorough and clearly has a lot of experience in this field. He has a "no BS" personality...The results at PFCLA were much better than what we got at our other clinic, in terms of embryos frozen (we have not yet done a transfer) --even though I was older when I came to PFCLA.
I opted for two cycles of embryo freezing [at Pacific Fertility Center LA], per Dr. Sahakian's recommendation on how many kids we wanted to have...[nurses are] Very communicative, fast to respond. Very knowledgeable and professional...Great experience - the team clearly cares a lot about what they do. One con is that their building doesn't validate parking. Would definitely recommend - their package pricing was also very competitive, without the hidden fees that I saw elsewhere.

Dr. Sahakian was very accessible throughout my whole treatment. We came to him after growing increasingly frustrated with the results at another clinic. We had Dr. Sahakian's cell phone number and he spent a lot of time explaining to us why our previous treatments at the other clinic didn't work.
Describe the protocols Vicken Sahakian used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles and their degree of success.
I cannot remember the exact protocol. I opted for two cycles of embryo freezing, per Dr. Sahakian's recommendation on how many kids we wanted to have.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles. (Assigned nurse: Ivory)
Very communicative, fast to respond. Very knowledgeable and professional.
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
Great experience - the team clearly cares a lot about what they do. One con is that their building doesn't validate parking. Would definitely recommend - their package pricing was also very competitive, without the hidden fees that I saw elsewhere.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Vicken Sahakian at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
$12,600
Describe Vicken Sahakian's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles.
Dr. Sahakian is very ethical and will discourage you against a multiple embryo transfer there is a good medical reason / the patient insists it is their wish.

Dr. Sahakian took the time to meet with me personally, as the GC, and each member of his staff have always been both really friendly and very responsive to all my needs and questions.... I was able to have a separate phone call with a list of questions to interview him. I was really impressed with his history, passion, experience and knowledge about IVF.... He is very professional, and very busy. Sometimes I had to wait an extra 10 minutes, sometimes if I was there early they got me in early.
They [Pacific Fertility Center LA] are 100% great. The nurses, the facility, the location, the doctor, the med protocols, everything. Parking is about $25 but valet makes it easy to use and there is a pharmacy in the building.... Dr. Sahakian took the time to meet with me personally, as the GC, and each member of his staff have always been both really friendly and very responsive to all my needs and questions.... They reach out to me via phone and email on a regular basis.

Med screening, linking checks, IVF transfer meds specific to my needs. Follow up. We had an unexpected 16 week loss and he texted me personally and helped me through it. It seems he often works 7 days a week.

Dr. Vicken truly showed care and attention during my treatments as well as his staff. Warm and thoughtful....Dr. Vicken has a great personality. He was very positive and hopeful and at the same time, straight to the point. I appreciate his honest and candid attitude...The wait is very very long and he is usually late so be patient and plan to be gone for a while if you work or have other commitments.
The location [of Pacific Fertility Center] in LA is challenging to park. Since they are usually very late park your car somewhere with plenty of time on the meter if you drive to your appointments. The parking lot at the clinic in Westwood is a rip off...They [Nurses] were caring and showed a lot of compassion every step of the way...My treatments were 75% covered by the insurance. One of the treatment I was not charged for, I only paid for the cost of the Anesthesiologist.

Describe the protocols Vicken Sahakian used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles and their degree of success.
We tried IVF 3 times. The fist time the cycle was canceled, my ovaries were not really responding to the meds. I was on Follistim 375 and Menopur 150 for about a week. The second time, he put me on Birth control for 21 day. He added a 3 medication in addition to the Follistim and Menopur he also put me on Lupron 15U. The egg retrieval was not successful he could not inseminate my eggs, the quality was very poor. My third time and last time was basically the same as the previous protocol. During the egg retrieval he realized that my eggs were already out of my ovaries, he did an IUI immediately after but we were not successful.

Dr. Sahakian was just super busy and had so many patients I think it was hard for him to remember everyone. He was nice and had okay bedside manner just too many patients...I really liked Dr. Sahakian. He was the first doctor that could really diagnose me and suggest IVF. I was very young so I felt like prior doctors didn't think I'd have to do IVF. He didn't waste any more time which I was grateful for. He is a busy man and had lots of patients but was a great doctor.
They [nurses at Pacific Fertility Center] were all very nice and were sensitive to what I was going through. When they had to cancel my cycle I just started bawling. They were there to comfort me and helped me feel better...The clinic is very nice. They also had a special waiting area for moms who had kids with them. I liked that a lot. I always felt bad bringing my kids to appointments with people who were trying to get pregnant. This way we had a special room with toys and we didn't have to distract other patients.

Describe the protocols Vicken Sahakian used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center Los Angeles and their degree of success.
I remember he had a hard time at first figuring out what dose of the meds he should give me. I reacted almost too well and so I wish he was a little more conservative at first with my meds. One cycle I ended up making hundreds and hundreds of follicles so we had to cancel the retrieval. It was really hard for me to go through.

This was a long time ago now but we did receive a discount because we didn't make that much money. I think we only had to pay around 7,000.

After my retreaval the doctor [Dr. Sahakian] didn’t follow up with me when my egg didn’t fertilize.... The doctor was not focused during my treatment because he was going through medical issues. He was Nut available for my 2nd transfer. When the transfer was done the other doctor explained everything to me. St that moment I realized he was not the doctor for me.... I was put on the same treatment each time. Folistim Memopher Goneral
No age limit -strength They [Pacific Fertility Center] don’t discourage you if you want to try with your own eggs. It’s a nice office. Parking in the building. Pharmacy downstairs to fill your prescription open 6 days a week.... Each cycle the medication was around $5,000 A package of 3 tries was around $16,500... I was not happy with my last appointment. I had 2 eggs retrieved and they didn’t fertilize. I felt that since it was done on a Sunday the eggs were not cared for in the same manor as the eggs retrieved during the week. Also, since that was my last try in the package of 3, I was not treated the same.

The staff was okay. I feel like the medication instructions were not clear. I wasn’t advised that the progesterone should not be drawn and left ready to go because the plastic changes the hormone.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
i felt he understood what i wanted and what i needed , conversations were kept short but always to the point...[Dr. Sahakian] was very good with us with y egg donor and my surrogate He has explained everything, we are just waiting on surrogates medical exam blood work to come back and hopefully, God willing we can move forward. He fully explained everything never a dull moment with the doctor, office staff was nice and friendly
I guess the [Pacific Fertility Center LA] clinics strengths, is that they are very nice in the front office, they explain future appointments, and [nurse] was very good explained everything well and in a timely manner. I dont think i have any weakness for them, it was during COVID time so things were a lil hard to do, but overall a great experience..
